Abstract (sommario):
Fabrication of microfluidic devices by soft lithography is by far the most popular approach due to simplicity and low cost. In this approach PDMS (polydimethylsiloxane) is cast on a photoresist master to generate replicas that are then sealed against glass slides using oxygen plasma. In this work, we demonstrated fabrication of soft photolithography masters using lamination of ADEX dry film as an alternative to the now classic SU-8 resist masters formed by spin coating. Advantages of using ADEX dry film include the easily-achievable uniform thickness without edge bead; simplicity of the process with significant time savings due to non-sticky nature of the film; and fewer health concerns due to less toxic developing solution and antimony-free composition. As we demonstrate, the process can be performed in a low-cost improvised fabrication room in ambient light, in place of a conventional yellow-light cleanroom environment. We believe this approach holds the promise of delivering state-of-the-art microfluidic techniques to the broad field of biomedical and pharmaceutical research.

Abstract (sommario):
Recently, the electricity industry in Spain has experienced a deep transformation, aimed to improve the degree of concurrence between the operating firms. This change must be explained in the framework of the regional integration of markets with an European scale. The European Union is shaped as a relevant region in the world energy (and specifically, in electricity) market. Facing this change, the Spanish electricity firms must adopt a wider business vision, to cope with all the aspects of the new competitive environment in order to obtain business success. Firms, following the resource-based view, must generate and strengthen the competitive advantage derived from its core competencies. Those competencies, that constitutes the base for the inter-firm heterogeneity, are created (and evolve) from several mechanisms of organisational learning. Our research tries to show what the business vision of the Spanish electricity firms is, based on the efficient management of its personal, technological and organisational competencies. We have focused on technological competencies, because, in a more competitive scheme, they can support the sustained competitive advantage of the firm. So, we develop a model based on the Strategic Matrix of Technological Competencies (SMTC). The model is tested with a sample of 20 Spanish electricity firms (representing 71.25% of the industry total turnover in 1996). That matrix combines, in a dynamic sense, several scenarios and strategic business units in order to determine the critical technological competencies that the firm must master in each economic situation. The empirical analysis developed concludes (for the firms in the sample), among other issues, the existence of statistical relationships between certain technological competencies (as "Clean Use of Coal", "Advanced Technologies for Control and Communication", and "Electricity Transmission Technologies"), and several sources of competitive advantage (as the "The firm must difficult its resources' imitability"). In conclusion, facing the new competitive environment (in Spain and in the EU), technological competencies are considered by those firms as sources of competitive advantage. These competencies evolves using several organisational learning systems adopted by the firm. In this changing environment, the SMTC can be a relevant tool for the strategic management of the firms in the electricity industry.

Abstract (sommario):
The continuing introduction of digital technologies into the production of meaningful and engaging audiovisual images accentuates the necessity of international cooperation in the sphere of the professional education of those young people who are planning to work in film, television and other screen arts. All over the world film schools are challenged by problems the solution of which requires consolidated participation of worldfamous masters. This has been recently confirmed at the Congress of the International Association of Film and Television Schools (CILECT) Congress held in October 2019 in Moscow in connection with the 100th anniversary of the All-Russian State Institute of Cinematography (VGIK). This essay analyzesVGIK's contribution to the process of perfecting programs in the field of screen arts at different stages of their development. The essay explores issues of CILECT development since its foundation in 1954. Initially, CILECT was supported by nations with developed film cultures, such as Brazil, Chile, Czechoslovakia, France, Italy, Poland, the Soviet Union, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Today, the Association unites 180 film schools from 65 nations. The essay analyzes VGIK's role in the development of film education and, more generally, the development of screen arts; and emphasizes the importance of international cooperation in this technological, digital age.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract. The mobile operating mode of agricultural Wide-Span Implement Carriers (WSICs) requires accurate synchronization of the forward motions of the two supporting tractors. The guidance task for WSIC operations is currently performed by human operators, which is labor-intensive and can be inaccurate. To replace the traditional human steering and control process, an automatic guidance system adapted to the mobile mode of the WSIC was designed and tested. A master-slave cooperative control method was applied, and the steering angle control law for both the master and slave vehicles and the velocity control law for the slave vehicle were derived. A scaled-down robotic platform was developed by integrating two heavy-duty mobile robots, a dual-rover real-time kinematic GPS (RTK-GPS), two inertial measurement units (IMUs), two XBee-PRO wireless communication modules, and two groups of control processors. Validation experiments were performed using the robotic platform on a flat and firm surface. Results of the single-robot path-following experiment verified the effectiveness of the steering angle control law. Results of the two synchronous tracking experiments, one with a constant reference velocity of 0.3 m s-1 and one with a varying reference velocity of 0.2 to 0.6 m s-1, showed that the two robots could perform their individual path-following tasks accurately while keeping their relative offset to less than 0.1 m. In the experiment with a constant reference velocity, the average, root mean square (RMS), maximum lead, and maximum lag of the offset errors were 0.01, 0.03, 0.05, and 0.06 m, respectively. Slightly larger average, RMS, and maximum lead offset errors were observed in the experiment with a varying reference velocity, which were 0.02, 0.04, and 0.09 m, respectively. These experimental results confirmed that the designed control laws for the synchronous tracking of the WSIC vehicles were effective and the developed automatic guidance system was reliable and applicable. Keywords: Automatic guidance, Master-slave control, Synchronous tracking, Wide-Span Implement Carrier (WSIC).

Abstract (sommario):
This article examines the visual dynamics underlying wrong-body narratives of gender through Lacanian psychoanalytic readings of Annie Leibovitz’s photographs of Caitlyn Jenner for Vanity Fair (2015) and Pedro Almodóvar’s film La piel que habito (Spain/France, 2011). Leibovitz’s photographs, seen as the public culmination of Jenner’s gender transition, and Almodóvar’s fictional film, centered on the forced surgical sex reassignment of one of its characters, both comment on the role of technically produced images in constructing visually articulated bodily materiality as central to gender. Staged in Jenner’s domestic space, often before mirrors that reflect the camera alongside its subject, Lei-bovitz’s photos portray Jenner at the center of complex scenarios of mastery over her image. These images demonstrate an awareness of their constructed nature at the same time as they offer themselves as the optical proof of Jenner’s transition; they reveal and, ostensibly, dominate what Lacan refers to as the fundamental misrecognition at the heart of all scopic scenarios of recognition. Almodóvar’s film imagines the reverse scenario in which the body-as-image exerts violent control over the individual, not only erasing the apparent sex of one of its characters, Vicente, but also, and less tolerably, attempting to erase the absence, or misrecognition, of his body in its status as what Lacan calls “objet a,” or object of desire. The distinct ways in which Leibovitz’s images and Almodóvar’s film theorize the relationship between bodies and images with regard to misrecognition and absence point to the continued necessity of considering the influence of scopic relations in formations of gender identity.

Abstract (sommario):
In an understudied cluster of films from the 1920s in Spain that feature the tumultuous lives of female music-hall entertainers, posters, postcards, and magazines not only mirror the shape of windows, doors and thresholds, but also direct the flow of circulating images of women. These portable, paper media immobilize or propel women’s bodies into motion, constituting portals that enable or disrupt fame, security and “happiness.” Rectangular artifacts both don the walls, windows, and cabinets in these films' mise-en-scène, and drive the story, character development, and the production of gender and racial identity. These films show characters interacting with posters, postcards, and magazines in a way that becomes as determining as the gripping plots, enabling women to pivot between stark, atavistic, or impoverished rurality and electrifying urban spaces. In this article, I examine the governing status of paratexts and the female star image in early Spanish film culture by tracing the history of La gitana blanca, a film directed by Ricardo de Baños initially released in 1919 and then reedited and redistributed internationally in 1923. In its opening moments, La gitana blanca offers us a view into how paratexts not only saturated the media ecology of the 1920s but also were “responsible for popular culture’s encounters with countless story worlds.” In the context of Spanish film historiography’s master narratives, in which cultural hierarchies remain tightly enmeshed with gendered and racialized logics, a cross-media perspective proves instrumental in revealing the extent to which film culture mediated the real and fictive lives of women.

Abstract (sommario):
ABSTRACT: Global commerce has undergone massive changes over the last two decades. No less so has the worldwide public accounting profession. We have seen two market crashes in the span of eight years, a host of financial reporting fiascoes, and the demise of Arthur Andersen. Historical cost-based accounting is giving way to fair-value accounting, and International Financial Reporting Standards are replacing national rules and regulations. And, yet, not since the Accounting Education Change Commission 20 years ago has there been a significant nationwide dialog regarding changing societal needs and the adequacy of our collegiate accounting programs to meet those needs. With this void in mind, the Education Committee of the American Accounting Association launched in 2008 an initiative to ignite a nationwide dialog of practitioners, academics, and other prominent stakeholders to assess the quality and level of satisfaction with current Master’s of Accountancy programs, the relevance of current coursework, and to identify and prioritize future curriculum initiatives. The first phase of that initiative was a survey conducted in the late spring of 2009 of more than 500 recent graduates of Master’s of Accountancy programs (auditors with two to six years experience); this article reports the findings of that survey. In a nutshell, these young auditors were asked what was right and what was wrong with Master’s of Accountancy programs from their perspective. This is a first step in a larger effort to help give direction to program revisions that would best serve the interests of students, the profession, and society. The purpose of the survey is not to definitively resolve outstanding controversies but rather to encourage further necessary debate. Various interpretations of the findings of the survey are inevitable, invited, and welcome. To that end, it is the authors’ intent to raise as many questions in the following pages as those resolved. Over the last decade academics have witnessed an endless litany of suggestions for curriculum changes from individuals, committees, associations, and firms. Unfortunately, those many recommendations have often been conflicting and provide limited, if any, prioritization of what to add to existing curricula and what to withdraw. Furthermore, we acknowledge that while this article does not provide a substantive discussion of the necessarily complimentary roles of university education, continuing professional education, and on-the-job training, such issues must be included in future dialogs.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Education about the heterogeneity of the older adult population is an important step for reducing ageist attitudes. As many undergraduate students view gerontology as an unrelatable discipline, educators are tasked with identifying innovative strategies to make course content engaging. The purpose of this presentation is to share an emerging educator’s experience with creating a novel essay assignment. Based off the International Movie Database (IMDb), the Gerontological Movie Database (GMDb) Review encourages students to use their knowledge to evaluate how older adults are portrayed in films. Explicitly, students must 1) choose a film that focuses on older adult characters and 2) apply key gerontological concepts (e.g., the life course perspective) to critique the film’s representation of aging. Though movie reviews are not a typical genre of writing, this assignment increases students’ understanding of how their perception of aging, coupled with master narratives embedded within today’s culture, influences the construction of age.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose The purpose of this exploratory study is to examine the perceived resources, strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats from the perspective of micro and small brewery owners, managers and brewing masters operating in three countries. To this end, the study adopts the resource-based view (RBV) of the firm, complemented by a strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats analysis. Design/methodology/approach The research provides a mixed-methods approach. Data were collected from craft breweries in Italy, Spain and the UK. In all, 165 valid responses were obtained from an online questionnaire, and an additional 24 face-to-face and telephone interviews with craft brewing operators in these three countries were conducted to further enrich the data. Independent samples t-test and Scheffé post hoc were used to analyse part of the quantitative data, while content analysis and word association were used for the qualitative component. Findings Product quality and uniqueness of product emerged as important perceived resources and strengths, suggesting an alignment with some of the resource-related attributes postulated by the RBV, such as valuable, rare and (un)substitutable. Other elements, such as natural and sustainable resources, including water quality and the current and future involvement in growing or sourcing raw products locally emerged as key resources, and are suggested as additional attributes. These strategic and tangible resources are however challenged by perceived weaknesses, particularly lack of financial, infrastructure and commercialisation resources, as well as threats from competition. Originality/value The exploratory study focuses on craft brewing from the perspective of micro/small operators. This industry has received very limited attention from the literature. The use of the RBV, with the potential to increase understanding of an emerging industry, and develop the theory further in this domain, adds to the originality and value of this research.

Abstract Film makers particularly resent the emphasis placed on audience research by the major studios. Director Richard Brooks once said:’‘Columbus would still be in Spain, if they waited for preview cards.’‘ Hitchcock never saw his films with an ordinary audience. ‘‘Don’t you miss hearing them scream?’‘ someone asked him.’‘No,’‘ explained the master of suspense, ‘‘I can hear them when I’m making the picture.’‘

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter examines the poetry of Abraham Ibn Ezra. Abraham ben Meir Ibn Ezra was born in Tudela. His birth may be dated in 1092, and it is possible that he met Judah ha-Levi in Southern Spain some time before they both left that country in 1140. Abraham Ibn Ezra did not set out for Palestine, but journeyed first to Rome. Subsequently, one sees him in Lucca, Pisa, Mantua, Béziers, Narbonne, Bordeaux, Angers, Rouen, and London. In all these places, he endeavoured to bring the culture of the Spanish Jews to those living in Italy, France, and England, and it is primarily due to him that schools of poetry began to flourish in Italy and Provence, which took the Spanish achievement as their model. He was a master of many skills — a mathematician, astronomer, grammarian, and philosopher, as well as a fine expounder of the Biblical text. In contradistinction to many contemporary Jewish thinkers, he was a firm believer in astrology. Ultimately, his humour and satire bring a new note into the poetry of the Spanish school of Hebrew poets. This must be seen against the background of his religious humility before the Creator, which is expressed in some of his finest work.

Abstract (sommario):
Two lines of research focus on this chapter: University Social Responsibility and entrepreneurship. Once Univesrities are aware of the importance of introducing socially responsible actions, we refer to the need of Universities to foster the creation of new business, establishing the best conditions for entrepreneurs. In this sense, we study what entrepreneurship means and how it is initiated. At the same time, we set the education on entrepreneurship and how gender differences condition the new creation of firms. Some examples of promoting entrepreneurship are discussed, from the initial actions until the maintaining and growing a company already created. Later, chapter concentrates on the particular case of Spanish Universities, offering a lot of actions for the promotion of entrepreneurship, like projects, awards, chairs, masters, conferences and meeting. It is also important to consider the support of public administration and the role of cluster. The chapter finishes with some considerations about spin off, as the result of entrepreneurship from the University.

Abstract (sommario):
Research confirms that entrepreneurial intention plays an important role in the decision to start a new firm. For this reason, it has received a lot of attention from researchers who have studied it from different perspectives, using different variables. The goal of this chapter is to investigate the reasons why some individuals tend more to entrepreneurship than others. By utilizing Schwartz's theory of cultural values as the explaining model, this paper analyzes cultural values in relation to three bipolar dimensions: conservation vs. autonomy, hierarchy vs. egalitarianism, and mastery vs. harmony. The authors applied the EOQ scale to a sample of 600 nascent entrepreneurs aged between 25 and 35, belonging to several autonomous communities in Spain. The results show significant differences in the variables of personal, contextual, and entrepreneurial intention regarding the gender, occupation, or professions of the parents and the autonomous community.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter reports on work carried out to develop an inclusive multimodal framework for the implementation of literary works with film adaptations as part of a video/literature workshop designed for one of the Master's courses aimed at the training of EFL/ESL secondary teachers in the Complutense University in Madrid (Spain). This multimodal framework was motivated primarily by the fact that literature has recently become an essential part of the curriculum in Bilingual Secondary Schools in Madrid. The reality that the use of film adaptations of literary texts facilitates the implementation of literature in the EFL/ESL classroom was also a key factor. The lines following not only describe the framework developed, but also provide one example of implementation of the model for the teaching of Geoffrey Chaucer's “The Wife of Bath,” without any doubt one of the hardest texts to tackle in the EFL/ESL classroom out of the literary works recommended for the bilingual official curriculum in the Spanish Community of Madrid.

Abstract (sommario):
Students seldom contemplate the importance of sustainability in family businesses. Indeed, the economic dimension of sustainability using performance statements remains a neglected field of study. The case of a Spain family firm in the tourism sector, Meliá Hotels International, is used to introduce students to sustainability analyses through the study of the company's sustainability information. This provides instructors with an opportunity to discuss the actual financial state of the company and how to improve some indicators, as well as to present an overview of the long-term sustainability of a family business. A qualitative methodology is used based on the documental analysis of sustainability reporting and information collected from the company's website and the media. This chapter present a case that can be used in management and accounting classes at both the bachelor and master levels. It is an important topic for users of financial information, entrepreneurs and other stakeholders concerned with these issues.

Abstract (sommario):
Faced with an increase in risks all over the the planet due to climate change and land management, scientists and operational staff are trying to find answers to adapt to 'increased risks'. Wildfires are a global problem that impact societies and the environment. Over the past decade, the number of wildfires has been unprecedented, creating great uncertainty for emergency responders. The results of these events are catastrophic impacts on life, property and the environment, e.g. Portugal 2017, Greece 2018, Spain 2019 in Southern Europe and Sweden 2018, Germany 2019, United Kingdom 2019 in Central and Northern Europe. Science proves that the risk of forest fires is increasing across Europe and that climate change is making the situation worse. Even countries that have never seen forest fires as a real threat to society and the environment will need to master firefighting. During a fire, European firefighting systems are exposed to demanding situations that help to understand fires and improve firefighting systems. Irrespective of the ability of some European emergency services to transfer acquired knowledge on wildfire management, extracting lessons learned and converting them into applicable knowledge for future events in the same or different countries is not sufficiently taken into consideration. Some countries have created knowledge networks around fire behavior analysis that operate at regional and national level (e.g. the FAST team in Spain, the Wildfire Tactical Advisor group in the UK and specialist centers in the Council Europe such as the Global Fire Monitoring Center in Germany and the European Forest Fire Center in Greece). A European forest firefighting knowledge sharing network is needed to extend existing regional and national knowledge, translate it with the mission of two-way learning to generate improved overall European emergency response capabilities in case of fire. With expertise in knowledge management, ENSOSP has joined forces with other recognized partners to develop a knowledge network specific to forest fires.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Microfluidic devices are used to apply mechanical stimuli, such as compressive force and flow shear force, to cells for mechanobiology studies. Previously, we developed a microfluidic cell compressor in which cells embedded in hydrogel scaffolds were compressed by polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) balloons, which were expanded pneumatically, in proportion to the balloon diameter. The device consisted of two PDMS layers. The bottom layer contained channels connected to circular wells and was fabricated using SU-8 photoresist molds. The top layer was a thin PDMS membrane separately prepared by spin coating PDMS on a plastic film. The two layers were bonded together using plasma bonding to form PDMS balloons and pneumatic channels. Therefore, fabrication of the device involved multiple steps of photolithography and soft lithography. In this study, we have improved the fabrication method of the microfluidic cell compressor by printing a master mold using a commercial microfluidic 3D printer for more efficient and cost-effective fabrication with higher design flexibility. The new method is more efficient because it does not require separate preparation of PDMS layers, the mold fabrication can be completed quicker, and a photomask is not necessary. We found that proper printing, UV light exposure, cleaning, baking, and temperature control of the mold affected the ability of the 3D printed mold to cure PDMS. Also, multiple maintenance requirements of the 3D printer were found for curing PDMS on the printed mold. For example, the resin within the 3D printer must be free of debris, the resin in the printer must be stirred before printing to ensure homogeneity, and the light filtering elements of the printer must be clean. With proper methodology and maintenance, the printer can be used to fabricate the microfluidic cell compressor and similar high-quality microfluidic devices capable of performing laboratory experiments efficiently. Further developing a methodology of creating 3D printed microfluidic device molds would expand access to microfluidics.

Abstract (sommario):
Biologically-inspired micro air vehicles (MAVs) are miniature-scaled autonomous aircrafts which attempt to biomimic the exceptional maneuver control during low-speed flight mastered by insects. Flexible wing structures are critical elements of a nature-inspired MAV as evidence supports that the wings of aerial insects experience highly-elastic deformations that enable insects to proficiently hover and maneuver in different airflow conditions. For this study, a crane fly (family Tipulidae) forewing is selected as the target specimen to replicate both its structural integrity and aerodynamic performance. The artificial insect-sized wing is manufactured using photolithography with negative photoresist SU-8 to fabricate the vein geometry. A Kapton film is attached to the vein pattern for the assembling of the wing. The natural frequencies and mode shapes of the artificial wing are determined to characterize its vibrations. A numerical simulation of the fluid-structure interaction is conducted by coupling a finite element model of the artificial wing with a computational fluid dynamics model of the surrounding airflow. From these simulations, the deformation response and the coefficients of drag and lift of the artificial wing are predicted for different freestream velocities and angles of attack. The deformation along the span of the wing increases nonlinearly with Reynolds number from the root to the tip of the wing. The coefficient of lift increases with angle of attack and Reynolds number. The coefficient of drag decreases with Reynolds number and angle of attack. The aerodynamic efficiency, defined as the ratio of the coefficient of lift to the coefficient of drag, of the artificial wing increases with angle of attack and Reynolds number.
