Abstract (sommario):
The continuous improvement of current gravitational wave detectors (GWDs) and the preparations for next generation GWDs place high demands on their stabilized laser sources. Some of the laser sources need to operate at laser wavelengths between 1.5 μm and 2.2 μm to support future detectors based on cooled silicon test masses for thermal noise reduction. We present detailed characterizations of different commercial low power seed laser sources and power amplifiers at the wavelength of 1550 nm with respect to performance parameters needed in GWDs. A combination with the most complete set of actuators was arranged as a master-oscillator power amplifier (MOPA), integrated into a stabilization environment and characterized. We present the results of this characterization that make this stabilized MOPA a highly relevant prototype for future GWDs as well as a low noise light source for other experiments in high precision metrology.

Abstract (sommario):
We report on a 1064 nm master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) system based on pulse-modulated laser diode seed sources combined with fiber preamplifiers and a Yb-doped tapered double-clad fiber (T-DCF) amplifier used as an all-fiber master oscillator and a two-stage side-pumped solid-state power amplifier. The combination of two master oscillators and a single power amplifier allowed us to obtain pulses with a duration ranging from 10 ns to 10 μs with energy up to 137 mJ at 100 Hz. For the first time, we demonstrate a widely tunable pulse duration and a solid-state MOPA system with over 100 mJ energy based on a T-DCF fiber seed laser.

Several practical all-solid-state tunable ultraviolet subnanosecond laser sources have been developed based on Ce 3+: LiLuF 4 (Ce:LLF) and Ce 3+: LiCaAlF 6 (Ce:LiCAF) active media pumped by the fifth and fourth harmonics of a regular Q-switched 10-ns Nd:YAG laser, respectively. The demonstrated tuning range of the Ce:LiCAF oscillator providing reproducibly-single-pulse output was 282 nm to 314 nm with the maximum output energy of 1 mJ. Tunable laser output from 223 nm to 232 nm was obtained by sum-frequency-mixing Ce:LiCAF laser output with fundamental output of a Q-sw Nd:YAG laser. The maximum subnanosecond Ce:LiCAF single-pulse output of 14 mJ was obtained in a "master oscillator-power amplifier" (MOPA) configuration.

AbstractLateral velocity variations in the near-surface reflect the presence of buried geological or anthropic structures, and their identification is of interest for many fields of application. Surface wave tomography (SWT) is a powerful technique for detecting both smooth and sharp lateral velocity variations at very different scales. A surface-wave inversion scheme derived from SWT is here applied to a 2-D active seismic dataset to characterize the shape of an urban waste deposit in an old landfill, located 15 km South of Vienna (Austria). First, the tomography-derived inverse problem for the 2-D case is defined: under the assumption of straight rays at the surface connecting sources and receivers, the forward problem for one frequency reduces to a linear relationship between observed phase differences at adjacent receivers and wavenumbers (from which phase velocities are straightforwardly derived). A norm damping regularization constraint is applied to ensure a smooth solution in space: the choice of the damping parameter is made through a minimization process, by which only phase variations of the order of the average wavelength are modelled. The inverse problem is solved for each frequency with a weighted least-squares approach, to take into account the data error variances. An independent multi-offset phase analysis (MOPA) is performed using the same dataset, for comparison: pseudo-sections from the tomography-derived linear inversion and MOPA are very consistent, with the former giving a more continuous result both in space and frequency and less artefacts. Local dispersion curves are finally depth inverted and a quasi-2-D shear wave velocity section is retrieved: we identify a well-defined low velocity zone and interpret it as the urban waste deposit body. Results are consistent with both electrical and electromagnetic measurements acquired on the same line.

Abstract (sommario):
Methods and means of remote control of the ecological state of the atmosphere are constantly improving. Lidar sensing allows obtaining up-to-date information about natural and technogenic sources of atmospheric pollution. There is a wide range of problems in ecological control, where the deployment of an inexpensive mobile lidar network is required. For this purpose, it is suggested to use Q-switch and MOPA fiber lasers in lidars. Q-switch fiber lasers have a simpler design and are more practical to use. However, pulses from Q-switch lasers have long full-pulse durations. In the present work, a lidar signal inversion method (LSIM) is proposed for solving this problem. Verification and outdoor experimentation of the LSIM was carried out with the reference signal method (RSM). The advantage of the proposed RSM is the minimum number of controllable parameters necessary for LSIM verification and approbation. As a result, the accuracy of the obtained results increased. Thus, the possibility of application of the Q-switch fiber lasers for lidar sensing is shown both theoretically and experimentally.

The Nouvelle Vague is one of the most influential film movements of the 20th century. Moving away from surrealism, the films of the French Nouvelle Vague sought to embrace socially relevant themes. Jean-Luc Godard emerged as an important figure in this movement due to his experimental approach to filmmaking, evident in works such as À Bout de Souffle (1960) and Le Mépris (1963), which reached its apex with Alphaville (1965), his most famous work. This article investigates Godard's experimental and wandering creative process in the conception of Alphaville, exploring the poetic operation of Godardian creation and establishing a dialog between various sources of inspiration.

The history of Mona Island and her transitory and permanent communities provides an interesting perspective on the role this small island has played over the long-term in spheres of maritime interaction in the Caribbean and further afield. In particular, we examine the role that the extraordinary cave systems have played in attracting people to the island and into the subterranean realm within. Through a recent study of the extant historical sources and archaeological evidence for past human activity on the island, we trace this historical landscape and seascape in order to review the importance of Mona in wider regional dynamics through time.

With the rapid urbanization and increasing energy demands, microgrids are recognizing renewable energy sources (RESs) as a valuable power generation option. However, efficiently managing the energy cost poses a significant challenge in integrating RESs with microgrids. To address this challenge, this study presents a novel approach utilizing a cost-effective multi-objective genetic algorithm (MOGA) to optimize power allocation among diverse generation units within the microgrid. The proposed MOGA algorithm aims to minimize generation costs by efficiently distributing the generated power from different sources in the microgrid vs the CO2 emission. By leveraging the genetic algorithm population, MOGA generates a diverse set of non-dominated solutions. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach in reducing the cost of RESs in microgrids, surpassing the performance of other multi-objective optimization methods such as multi-objective particle swarm (MOPSO) and multi-objective wind-driven optimization (MOWDO).

An energy optimization strategy is proposed to minimize operation cost and carbon emission with and without demand response programs (DRPs) in the smart grid (SG) integrated with renewable energy sources (RESs). To achieve optimized results, probability density function (PDF) is proposed to predict the behavior of wind and solar energy sources. To overcome uncertainty in power produced by wind and solar RESs, DRPs are proposed with the involvement of residential, commercial, and industrial consumers. In this model, to execute DRPs, we introduced incentive-based payment as price offered packages. Simulations are divided into three steps for optimization of operation cost and carbon emission: (i) solving optimization problem using multi-objective genetic algorithm (MOGA), (ii) optimization of operating cost and carbon emission without DRPs, and (iii) optimization of operating cost and carbon emission with DRPs. To endorse the applicability of the proposed optimization model based on MOGA, a smart sample grid is employed serving residential, commercial, and industrial consumers. In addition, the proposed optimization model based on MOGA is compared to the existing model based on multi-objective particle swarm optimization (MOPSO) algorithm in terms of operation cost and carbon emission. The proposed optimization model based on MOGA outperforms the existing model based on the MOPSO algorithm in terms of operation cost and carbon emission. Experimental results show that the operation cost and carbon emission are reduced by 24% and 28% through MOGA with and without the participation of DRPs, respectively.

There is evidence that social relationships may modify cognitive decline in older people. We examined the prospective association between social support and cognitive function among community-dwelling older people. Japanese adults recruited at health checkups in suburban towns were surveyed at baseline and one-year follow-up. Cognitive function was assessed using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment, Japanese version (MoCA-J). Social support from coresiding family, non-coresiding family, and neighbors/friends was assessed using self-administered questionnaires. Multivariable linear regression analysis was conducted to examine the effects of social support on MoCA-J scores at follow-up. Data were analyzed from 121 older people (mean age (standard deviation): 73.86 (4.95) years). There was a positive association between social support exchanges with neighbors and friends and MoCA-J scores at follow-up after covariate adjustment (unstandardized β = 1.23, p = 0.006). Social support exchanges with coresiding family and non-coresiding family and relatives were not associated with MoCA-J scores at follow-up (coresiding family: Unstandardized β = 0.28, p = 0.813, non-coresiding family and relatives: Unstandardized β = 0.51, p = 0.238). The provision of emotional support to neighbors and friends had the largest effect on MoCA-J scores. Our findings suggest that social support exchanges with neighbors and friends are protective against cognitive decline.

In our analysis, we see the development of MOBA games from their beginnings as modified real-time strategy (RTS) games to become a very popular standalone game genre. We also investigated the influence of MOBA games on mental health, social behavior, and addiction rates among players. Abstract (sommario):
The environmental/economic dynamic scheduling for microgrids (MGs) is a complex multiobjective optimization problem, which usually has dynamic system parameters and constraints. In this paper, a biobjective optimization model of MG scheduling is established. And various types of microsources (like the conventional sources, various types of renewable sources, etc.), electricity markets, and dynamic constraints are considered. A recently proposed MOEA/D-M2M framework is improved (I-MOEA/D-M2M) to solve the real-world MG scheduling problems. In order to deal with the constraints, the processes of solutions sorting and selecting in the original MOEA/D-M2M are revised. In addition, a self-adaptive decomposition strategy and a modified allocation method of individuals are introduced to enhance the capability of dealing with uncertainties, as well as reduce unnecessary computational work in practice and meet the time requirements for the dynamic optimization tasks. Thereafter, the proposed I-MOEA/D-M2M is applied to the independent MG scheduling problems, taking into account the load demand variation and the electricity price changes. The simulation results by MATLAB show that the proposed method can achieve better distributed fronts in much less running time than the typical multiobjective evolutionary algorithms (MOEAs) like the improved strength Pareto evolutionary algorithm (SPEA2) and the nondominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGAII). Finally, I-MOEA/D-M2M is used to solve a 24-hour MG dynamic operation scheduling problem and obtains satisfactory results.

Abstract (sommario):
The bacteriological quality of mola fish (Amblypharyngodon mola) from three local fish markets as fresh and as frozen from three departmental chain shops of Dhaka metropolis were analyzed. The microbial quality parameters varied with different sources and the quality was found to be poor for local market fish samples. In total 24 samples were considered for bacteriological quality analysis and 10 pathogenic isolates for antibiotic sensitivity test to 12 antibiotics. The total bacterial count ranged from 1.8 ± 0.25×104 to 6.5 ± 0.75 × 106 cfu/g for fresh and 5.5 ± 0.55 × 103 to 7.0 ± 0.80 × 105 cfu/g for frozen mola. The highest total coliform count of mola was 8.0 ± 0.55 × 104 and 6.1 ± 0.40 × 103 cfu/g for local market and departmental chain shop, respectively. All fresh and frozen samples were observed having high quantity of E. coli above 102 cfu/g. Furthermore, Salmonella-Shigella was identified in 67% samples (75% of fresh and 58% of frozen samples) varied from 0.9 ± 0.00 ×102 to 5.3 ± 0.30 × 103 cfu/g whereas Vibrio spp.was confirmed in 79% samples (83% of fresh and 75% of frozen samples) of which 90% samples exceeded 102 cfu/g. Similar pattern was observed in Staphylococcus spp. with 83% of fresh and 58% of frozen samples (63% of total samples) beyond 103 cfu/g. In case of antibiotic sensitivity pattern of the indicator and pathogenic isolates, all of them were resistant to amoxicillin and penicillin. Most of the isolates were sensitive to bacitracin, ciprofloxacin, erythromycin and streptomycin. The findings proved that mola fish under this study was more or less contaminated and local fish market samples were highly privileged with food borne pathogens which confirmed the unhygienic condition of the market as well as the presence of antibiotic resistance bacteria in mola fish may threat to public health safety. Abstract (sommario):
Purpose – This paper aims to investigate the kinds of resources used by students at the University of the West Indies Mona Campus, to start their research and to find out their perception of the quality of the resources they use. Design/methodology/approach – A survey was distributed manually to undergraduates, and the responses were collated and analysed using Excel software. Findings – The findings revealed that Google was the resource most likely to be used by respondents to start their research, and the resource least used was the librarian (ask a librarian). Originality/value – This represents original research for the Mona Campus. It is important in helping the library to understand an aspect of the research habits and preferences of the undergraduate community it serves and will help the library in further decision-making, as it seeks to build awareness among the undergraduate population, of the library resources available to them.

Abstract (sommario):
The research reports broadband, continuous-wave (CW), mid-infrared generation based on an optical parametric oscillator (OPO), pumped by an amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) fiber source. The ASE fiber source has a ytterbium (Yb)-doped fiber master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) structure. By injecting another fiber laser with high power and a narrow linewidth into the nonlinear crystal, the phase-matching difference frequency generation (DFG) can be realized at a low pumping threshold. It is shown that during the down-conversion of the ASE fiber source, the intracavity DFG can steadily and effectively generate a broadband mid-infrared laser, with a central wavelength of 3713 nm. The bandwidth of the mid-infrared laser is 122 nm. The pump power of 2 W generates a 0.238 W mid-infrared laser with a pump-idler conversion efficiency of 11.6%. It has tremendous application potential in the research of broadband CW mid-infrared lasers.

The present rat balance study investigated Ca availability from the whole indigenous small fish species, mola (Amblypharyngodon mola) from Bangladesh and from skimmed milk. Four groups of six young male rats each were fedad libitumwith diets containing either small fish or milk, at 100 or 160 g crude protein/kg diet dry matter. The study was conducted for 28 d and faeces and urine samples were collected in two balance periods: days 8–14 and 22–28. The Ca and N contents of the diets, faeces and urine were analysed. Ca intake, fractional Ca absorption and Ca retention in relation to N retention were measured. Digestibility and protein utilization of the experimental diets, weight gain of the rats, femur bone weight and mineral composition as well as bone alkaline phosphatase activity were also determined. It was concluded from the values of these variables that Ca from small fish with bones was available and appeared to be a useful Ca source in rats, though perhaps not as available as Ca from milk. This study suggests that small fish with bones may be an important source of Ca in human diets. Promotion of the production and consumption of small fish in population groups with low intakes of milk and milk products should therefore be encouraged.

The all-fiber ASE source is an intriguing tool in the fields of super-fluorescence detection, coherent measurement and spectrum analysis technology. We experimentally demonstrate a continuous all-fiber amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) source based on amaster-oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) system, which aims at achieving high power and frequency stability. The seed source is homemade ASE low power super-fluorescence source with 200 mW. The system employs large-mode-area Yb3+-doped double-clad fiber (LMA-DCF), and the maximum power can reach 1.73 kW at a center wavelength of 1079.36 nm, and can maintain an optical-to-optical conversion efficiency of 79.13%. During 30 min of real-time monitoring, the ASE source system did not generate a nonlinear effect, and power fluctuation was less than 2%.

Peoples can readily and affordably obtain small indigenous fish species (SIS), with a maximum length of 25 cm, that can be found in niches in small bodies of water (such as canals, ponds, wetlands, streams, etc.). SIS contribute valuable and significant macro- and micronutrients in Bangladesh. SIS are excellent suppliers of vitamins and minerals. The main micronutrients are copper, iodine, iron, selenium, chromium, and zinc, which can help prevent mineral deficiency and enzymatic response in the human body. SIS, such as the mola (Amblypharyngodon mola), cotio (Osteobrama cotio), darkina (Esomus danricus), etc., are easily digestible by the human gut. Nutrients of these fish are quickly accessible by the intestine. These fish are comparatively cheap and easy to capture and promote the presence of particular vitamins in SIS, including A, D, E, and K, as well as vitamin B components. This review paper focuses on the SIS nutritional contribution and their efficacy of preventing malnutrition in developing countries such as Bangladesh and the whole world.

The need for energy and environmental sustainability drives the adoption of renewable energy systems to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Efficient planning of energy sources is crucial for a reliable distribution network. This article solves the optimal allocation of hybrid energy sources (i.e., Renewable Distribution Generators (RDGs) and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS)) problem, aiming to minimize the annual energy loss and investment costs simultaneously. The proposed formulation includes the uncertainties such as forced outages of RDG’s, intermittence in RDG power generation, Expected Energy Not Served (EENS) by DG units, and time-varying demand altogether in the existing formulation. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed formulation, a Multi-Objective Evolutionary Algorithm based on Decomposition with Dynamic Resource Allocation (MOEA/D-DRA) is used. Simulation studies are conducted on IEEE 33-node and TNEB 84-node Radial Distribution Systems (RDSs), comparing results with the Rider Optimization Algorithm (ROA) and Hybrid Nelder Mead-Particle Swarm Optimization (HNMPSO) respectively. The proposed formulation for a Multi-objective Optimization of Hybrid Energy Sources allocation problem solved by the MOEA/D-DRA algorithm provides improved benefits like minimum annual energy loss, investment cost, CO2 emission, EENS by the DG units, and enhanced system voltage stability and voltage profile.

Abstract (sommario):
The paper showcases a part of the collection of the first lady of SFRY, Jovanka Broz, captured in photographs taken between 1953 and 1980. The issue of the lack of primary sources is considered – the lack of objects and explicit attitudes of the first lady herself, with the goal of offering a methodological approach through which this deficiency could be overcome. The paper uses the method of chronological tracking of political events, trends in the world of fashion and events in the fashion industry, as well as statements by participants and witnesses of certain events. Through comparison of these three aspects, we indirectly arrive at a view of the relationship of Jovanka Broz to clothing and fashion, as well as to a view of the key influences of the first lady’s collection on the fashion choices of the political elite and the fashion industry of SFR Yugoslavia. Jovanka Broz’s public appearance changed over time, from a careful selection of photographs without personal comment, through the recording of statements on formal occasions, to giving interviews to chosen journalists on specific topics – these changes are noted in the paper. It can be concluded that the fashion choices of Jovanka Broz were, first and foremost, aligned with the protocols demanded by international diplomacy, as well as that Jovanka Broz herself approached this demands with the utmost diligence, as well as personal attitude.

The specifics of the soil and climatic conditions of the Aral sea region, Kazakhstan, primarily associated with salinization, various types of droughts, uneven distribution of precipitation during the growing season, and late spring frosts, make it necessary to create crop varieties with resistance to biotic and abiotic environmental factors. In this regard, the expansion of the area under crops of nontraditional salt-tolerant grain crops in the Kyzylorda region is one of the main directions of increasing the sustainability of agriculture in the region. Studies have shown that among the grain crops cultivated in the region, spring barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) is a reliable crop that can make the most of the region's bioclimatic resources to form sustainable yields. The purpose of this study is to create a new promising source material of barley based on a comprehensive study of collection material of various ecological and geographical origin by applying various methods of classical breeding. Based on a comprehensive assessment of the collection material of barley, a working collection of 250 varieties with agronomic resistance to environmental stress factors of the Aral Sea region was created. The selected samples are recommended for use in practical breeding in order to increase the adaptive potential of modern barley varieties.
