Children's literature often serves as a tool for conveying complex phenomena, and one such phenomenon is the solar eclipse. While lunar eclipses have been a recurring theme in children's literature, solar eclipses have received less attention in this context. Nevertheless, in the wake of the remarkable total solar eclipse in the United States in 2017, certain children's literary works have been popular because of the use of the solar eclipse as a central theme. Noteworthy examples include The Total Solar Eclipse of Nestor Lopez by Andrea Cuevas and Every Soul A Star by Wendy Mass, both narrate tales set against the backdrop of a solar eclipse. This study examines the role played by the solar eclipse in character development and the incorporation of mythical elements within these selected novels by employing David Leeming's theory of myth, through a close reading. This study demonstrates how the solar eclipse symbolizes character growth, fostering enhanced self-confidence and self-acceptance, thereby reflecting the mythological notion that solar eclipses possess transformative potential. Furthermore, these novels encompass myths such as the act of biting during a solar eclipse, the transformation, the rituals during the eclipse, and the euphoria of the solar eclipse. However, this study also reveals instances of misinterpretation of these myths, thereby highlighting potential issues of cultural appropriation, which may contribute to children's misunderstanding.

The history of total solar eclipses usually is to be found within the history of science. However, a true social history of total eclipses must include the experience of the general population that witnessed it. I am interested in the emotions induced by a total eclipse of the Sun in the recent past. I surmise that solar eclipses engender all eight of the psycho-evolutionary classifications of emotion enunciated by Robert Plutchik. There are eight primary emotions in Plutchik’s system. I suggest examples corresponding to each, relying on accounts of the total solar eclipse of 7 August 1869.

Reports of lunar and solar eclipses are of interest to students of both history and the history of science. Used with care, they can anchor significant historical events in time. Greek literature, like that of other civilizations, has its fair share of such reports. Often they motivate the actions of characters or expose aspects of belief. Sometimes they shed light on the assumptions of the writer. There are three places in theHistoriesof Herodotus where the author mentions darkenings of the sky (generally taken to be solar eclipses), which have narrative significance and which assist in dating the wars between the Lydians and the Medes (1.74) and between the Greeks and the Persians (7.37 and 9.10).

A ground-based multichannel microwave radiometer (GMR) is commonly used to observe the atmospheric radiation brightness temperature (TB) in order to retrieve atmospheric temperature and humidity profiles. At present, GMRs are used only in meteorology and climate monitoring. However, theoretical analysis showed that GMRs can be also used to observe the solar radiation. Therefore, we tried to improve the antenna servo control system of a GMR so that it could track and observe the sun, and the results showed that the GMR could respond to the variation of solar radiation. A further question was: can a GMR observe the variation of the sun during a solar eclipse? Fortunately, two solar eclipse events were captured by the GMR on 26 December 2019 and 21 June 2020 in Xi’an, China. We used the upgraded GMR to observe the variation of solar radiation during the two solar eclipses. The observation and analysis results showed that (1) the GMR could accurately track the sun and respond to the variation of solar radiation during the solar eclipse. We analyzed the variation features of the solar radiation by combining the solar phase during the two solar eclipses. (2) We found that the GMR could respond to the variation of the solar radiation arising from the Earth–Sun distance, and we further propose a novel method to measure the eccentricity of earth orbit with the GMR by using the passive solar observation. The results show that the eccentricity measured was 0.0169, which agreed quite well with the value of 0.0167 in the literature. (3) The average variation percentages of both the Earth–Sun distance and the intensity of the incident solar radiation throughout the year were estimated to be 3.44% and 6.6%, respectively. According to these results, the solar observation techniques can broaden the field usage of GMR.

A wide variety of environmental stimuli can influence the behavior of animals including temperature, weather, light, lunar and seasonal cycles, seismic activity, as well as other perturbations to their circadian rhythm. Solar eclipses offer a unique opportunity to evaluate the relative influence of unexpected darkness on behavior of animals due to their sudden interference with local light levels and meteorology. Though occasionally bizarre, modern studies have lent support to the idea that at least some individuals of certain species display altered behavior during these events. A comparison of informal observations of animal behavior during solar eclipse from social media (i.e., March for Science Facebook discussion) to those conducted scientifically (published literature) can elucidate how well this topic is being covered. Describing which species and behaviors are covered in each source can reveal gaps in the literature which can emphasize areas for future research. We enumerated a total of 685 observations of approximately 48 different types of animals reacting to the 2017 Great American Solar Eclipse from over 800 posts on the discussion. The animals most frequently reported on social media as reacting to the eclipse were invertebrates (40% of social media observations) and birds (35% of social media observations). A total of 26 published studies recorded 169 behavior observations of approximately 131 different animal species. The group with the highest number of observations in the literature were birds with 62 records (37% of literature observations). Most observations reported decreases in activity (38.7% of bird observations) followed by increases in vocalization (24.2% of bird observations). There were approximately 30 different species of invertebrate observed (24% of literature observations), most frequently reported of which were zooplankton (14.6% of invertebrate observations).

Solar eclipses are astronomic phenomena in which the Earth’s moon transits between the planet and the Sun, projecting a shadow onto the planet’s surface. As solar power installed capacity increases, detailed studies of this region-wide phenomenon’s effect in irradiance is of interest; however, the literature mainly reports its effects on localized scales. A measurement campaign spanning over 1400 km was pursued for the 2 July 2019 total solar eclipse in Chile, to register the event and establish a modeling framework to assess solar eclipse effects in irradiance over wide regional scales. This work describes the event and presents an estimation framework to decompose atmospheric and eclipse effects on irradiance. An analytical model was applied to study irradiance attenuation throughout the Chilean mainland territory, using satellite-derived and astronomical data as inputs compared to ground measurements in eight stations. Results showed good agreement between model and observations, with Mean Bias Errors of −0.008 to 0.98 W/m2 for Global Horizontal Irradiance and −0.004 to −4.664 W/m2 for Direct Normal Irradiance, with Normalized Root Mean Squared Errors of 0.7–5.8% and 1.4–12.2%, respectively. Energy losses due to obscuration corresponded between 20–40% for Global Horizontal Irradiance and 25–50% for Direct Normal Irradiance over Chilean territory.

This study aims to determine the implementation and accuracy of the Jean Meeus Algorithm in determining lunar and solar eclipses.This research is a qualitative research with a literature approach. The primary data source for this research is a book entitled Astronomical Algorithm by Jean Meeus. Meanwhile, secondary data is all information related to the Jean Meeus algorithm in determining eclipses obtained from various literature such as books, websites, encyclopedias, dictionaries, scientific articles, and other sources of information. The results of this study indicate that determining the eclipse time using the Jean Meeus algorithm involves seven stages of calculation namely; starting with determining the year the eclipse occurred, then determining the gamma value, JDE (Julian Day Ephemeris), the payoff value (k), the saros series, the reference time (To) and the Bessel Element value. The calculation of the Jean Meeus Algorithm is included in the tahkiki essential reckoning method because the calculation process involves astronomical data with very precise corrections for the motion of the Moon and the Sun, This method is also based on the heliocentric flow. In addition, the level of accuracy of Jean Meeus' calculations has a good match with NASA as a comparison, namely with results that are only 1 to 3 minutes apart and the average difference is only in seconds.

Ozone at ground level (O3) is an air pollutant that is formed from primary precursor gases like nitrogen oxides (NOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). It plays a significant role as a precursor to highly reactive hydroxyl (OH) radicals, which ultimately influence the lifespan of various gases in the atmosphere. The elevated surface O3 levels resulting from anthropogenic activities have detrimental effects on both human health and agricultural productivity. This paper provides a comprehensive analysis of the variations in surface O3 levels across various regions in the Indian subcontinent, focusing on both spatial and temporal changes. The study is based on an in-depth review of literature spanning the last thirty years in India. Based on the findings of the latest study, the spatial distribution of surface O3 indicates a rise of approximately 50–70 ppbv during the summer and pre-monsoon periods in the northern region and Indo-Gangetic Plain. Moreover, elevated levels of surface O3 (40–70 ppbv) are observed during the pre-monsoon/summer season in the western, southern, and peninsular Indian regions. The investigation also underscores the ground-based observations of diurnal and seasonal alterations in surface O3 levels at two separate sites (rural and urban) in Kannur district, located in southern India, over a duration of nine years starting from January 2016. The O3 concentration exhibits an increasing trend of 7.91% (rural site) and 5.41% (urban site), ascribed to the rise in vehicular and industrial operations. This review also presents a succinct summary of O3 fluctuations during solar eclipses and nocturnal firework displays in the subcontinent.
