Abstract (sommario):
Introduction. The dynamics of Russian sociology research are analyzed for the period of 1993—2020. Methods. The sources of information for the study were three databases on the Web of Science platform: SSCI, SCI-E, and A&HCI. The main method of research was bibliometric analysis. Results and Discussion. The percentage of publications in sociology among the social sciences in the world as a whole has gradually declined over the 28-year period: from 4.7 % in 1993 to 2.3 % in 2020. The decline in the same indicator for Russian publications began only in 2008. It should be noted that this indicator is significantly higher than that for the world as a whole: the average percentage of publications in sociology for the entire period for the world was 3.2 %, for Russia — 16.4 %. The percentage of the world's Open Access publications in sociology is lower than that for the social sciences as a whole, but the growth rate is very high: 1.7 % in 1993 and 34.1 % in 2020. In the case of Russian sociology publications, the Open Access system has only become relatively active in 2013. In 2020, the total percentage of such publications was 7.9 %. Two approaches were used to define the thematic range of sociology research and the level of sociology's connection to other scientific fields. One is based on identifying publications that are common to two of the scientific fields under study, the other involves on identifying publications that were simultaneously cited in different scientific fields. Application of these approaches demonstrated that the second approach, as compared with the first, allowed to reveal much more extensive thematic connections of sociology with other scientific directions. At the same time, the application of rank correlation methods showed that the results obtained using these two different approaches are characterized by a sufficient degree of consistency. Conclusion. The data obtained on the percentage of publications in sociology in national and world science can be used by various state and public structures in the development of scientific policy in the field of social sciences. Data on sociology's connections with other disciplines and their quantitative characteristics can serve as background material for subsequent qualitative (substantive) analysis of these connections.

Abstract (sommario):
The ability to make forecasts about events is a goal favored by the so-called exact sciences. In sociology and other social sciences, the forecast, although often sought after, is not likely to be realized unconditionally. This article seeks to problematize and discuss the connection between sociology and forecast. The object of study of sociology has particular features that distinguish it from other scientific fields, namely facts and social situations, which deal with trends; the systems of belief of social scientists and policymakers that can influence the attempt to anticipate the future; the dissemination of information and knowledge produced by sociology and other social sciences, which have the potential to change reality and, consequently, to call into question their capacity for the social forecast. These principles pose challenges to sociology’s heuristic potentials, making the reflection on these challenges indispensable in the scientific approach to social processes.

Abstract (sommario):
The sociology of the social sciences had developed rapidly in the last few decades. Researchers have given special attention to the development and institutionalization of sociology. Despite the availability of a large body of literature on various national sociological fields, comparative studies of the discipline are still few. The existing studies rarely compare these fields systematically along salient dimensions.

Abstract (sommario):
Academic disciplines are defined not primarily by their object but by their (theoretical and methodological) approach to that object, and by their claim to a monopoly over it. Even where that monopoly claim has been highly successful, it remains contestable. For example, economics, perhaps in this respect the most successful social science, finds its object – the economy – contested by political economists and economic sociologists. Whereas economics has successfully marginalized potential competitors, sociology has remained a broad church. Attempts to impose theoretical and methodological order on the discipline have met with resistance, and eventually failed. Moreover, sociology has never really reached consensus on what its object is; ‘society’, ‘social facts’, ‘social action’ were the classical options, with the list growing over time (social networks, rational action, actor networks, etc.). Thus, while we can speak of ‘heterodox economics’ there is insufficient orthodoxy to speak of ‘heterodox sociology’. This has an obverse side. Precisely because of the weakness of its monopolistic claims, sociology has been very productive in spawning new disciplinary fields, which, rather than remaining within sociology’s weak gravitational pull, successfully establish themselves as separate disciplines or ‘studies’. Criminology, industrial relations, urban studies and organization studies are the most obvious examples. In light of this, this article addresses two questions: (1) What happens to these new fields when they break free of the parent discipline, and to the parent discipline when they do? (2) If one effect on the ‘offspring’ is a loss of disciplinary orientation (as the rationale for this special issue suggests) what, if anything, has contemporary sociology to offer OS as a potential source of reorientation?

Abstract (sommario):
This article takes stock of Yves Dezalay’s original path at the heart of the sociology of globalization. Anchored in the theory of social fields and forms of social capital pioneered by Pierre Bourdieu, but always eclectic in his own theoretical stance, Dezalay has constructed a unique account of the intricate relationship between law, power and globalization tracking the internationalization strategies of national elites and the transformation of forms of state knowledge.

Abstract (sommario):
This article is an analysis of three original variants of relational sociology. Jan A. Fuhse’s conception, which is part of the tradition of social network research, situates network analyses in the context of connections between culture and symbolic forms and styles. Fuhse’s idea involves a communicative base of relations, and he perceives institutions as spheres of communication that reduce uncertainty and activate roles in the process of communication. François Dépelteau’s approach, which is inspired by Dewey’s pragmatism, recognizes transaction fields as configurations of relations forming interdependency between people. The practices of actors entering transactions within social fields are important, and this makes it possible for an impression of continuity, order, and complexity to be created. Pierpaolo Donati’s relational realism is an attempt to describe the relational dimensions of human actions, while at the same time it is a consistent “relationization” of key social categories, and is also useful in understanding after-modernity. This article emphasizes the fruitfulness of new attempts to demarcate sociological genealogies and to read the classics of relational sociology. The author discusses the creation of new puzzles for sociological theory, the necessity of analysing the ontologies of social life, the phenomena of emergency and agency, and the use of relational theory in regard to categories of the common good and social capital. He encourages multidimensional and multilevel analyses of social reality.

Abstract (sommario):
This dissertation examines the interactions between social movement organizations and a variety of state and municipal targets of movement activity during the construction of the Illinois Hydraulic Fracturing Regulatory Act (HFRA). Hydraulic fracturing is a controversial method of oil and gas extraction which created an unusual amount of public interest and participation in policy construction. This dissertation provides an overview of the political environment in Illinois during the legislative negotiations for the HFRA, outlining the playing field of political negotiations, and the relative positioning of social movement actors competing for influence in that field. Additionally, I examine the causes and consequences of conflict between coalition partners opposed to fracking, focusing on the impact of differential resources, expertise, and institutional legitimacy. Using data from interviews with organization leaders from industry and environmental coalitions, key informants from government bureaus, and participant observation at public meetings, my research contributes to the political process literature by elaborating the heterogeneity of the state’s interests in political challenges and revealing cleavages within social movement coalitions.

Abstract (sommario):
This study focuses on a cultural phenomenon that is driven by the demolition of Major League Baseball stadiums, ballparks, and fields. Prompted by their inherent role in the evolution of the sport and the inadequacies of the existing historic preservation framework, this study examines how American society preserves this utilitarian form, after their demolition, through observations, data collection, and analysis. In doing so, this study exposes that Major League Baseball stadiums, ballparks, and fields are preserved through the use of nine overlapping preservation methods, which memorialize five significant features. However, though these preservation methods do not prevent Major League Baseball stadiums from being demolished, they do illustrate how our society alternatively preserves historically and culturally significant resources when the existing historic preservation framework is rendered incompatible.

Vietnamese immigrants and refugees have made their home in Boston, especially in Dorchester's Fields Corner neighborhood, since the end of the Vietnam War. Still one of the Hub's youngest immigrant groups, the Vietnamese have helped define the "New Boston," a term used to describe a city where white residents are now in the minority. This paper explores the triumphs and challenges, past and present, facing the Vietnamese community as they march steadily toward economic security, political recognition, and acculturation

Abstract (sommario):
The "college-for-all" norm encourages all students to attend college, and while rising college ambitions point to the effectiveness of this encouragement, differences by race and income in who goes to the most selective institutions and who actually graduates from those institutions point to persistent inequalities. With few exceptions, the majority of research on college access has focused more on documenting these inequalities and less on explaining how students end up in their respective institutions. In particular, we lack in-depth examinations of how students navigate the college admissions process, which represents one of the last hurdles between students and college attendance. Considering the increasingly complex nature of college admissions, especially for the most elite schools, the application process is a key gate-keeping mechanism in the reproduction of inequality in higher education, both in terms of who attends college and whether or not they finish (vertical stratification) and what kind of school they enroll in (horizontal stratification). My dissertation delves into this process and finds that institutions such as universities and high schools tend to reinforce disadvantages by failing to adjust their messages for different student populations. All students in my study are fed high college aspirations, but not all have the same "college knowledge." When less advantaged students attempt to pursue the dominant college pathway, like they see so many of their peers successfully navigating, they meet with unrealized aspirations and college "under-matching." Though interest in under-matching and horizontal stratification in higher education is growing, we know very little about the processes that lead to these outcomes. Drawing on extensive field research at two high schools and interviews with 137 respondents, I examine the three stages of the college-choice process – aspirations, search, and choice. I examine how institutional forces, such as high school organization and culture and higher educational marketing, lead students to engage in the college application process in very different ways during each of the three stages. I argue that the first step towards understanding more about why low-income and minority students struggle to graduate college is to look at the circumstances under which they made their college choices.

Abstract (sommario):
In this dissertation it is argued that humans constitute themselves as subjects in a complex of interrelationships between body, self, and society, The effects of these interrelationships are examined through the ways in which traumatic paraplegics constitute themselves as subjects following their accidents. Subsequent to paralysis there is a radical break in how paraplegics experience their bodies, in what they are physically able to do, and in the ways in which their bodies are interpreted socially, assigned meanings, and allocated space in which to do and be. Experiential accounts of paraplegia are presented as a means to exploring the implications of these changes in the ways paraplegics constitute themselves as subjects.

Abstract (sommario):
Organisations operate in an environment buffeted by social change. Child sexual abuse became publicly recognised as a social problem from 1986. The first part of this thesis examines public awareness of, and interest in child sexual abuse, how child sexual abuse arose in New Zealand, the influence of international "moral entrepreneurs" in shaping this recognition and the activities of local "moral entrepreneurs"' including some police officers, in assisting the move of child sexual abuse from the private to the public arena. The second part of this thesis examines organisational change and whether the causes for organisational change are environmentally or managerially driven. Or is it, as this thesis suggests a combination of both. This thesis takes these theoretical arguments and applies them to the process of organisational change that occurred in the New Zealand Police Department, from the development and implementation of the National Abuse Policy for the investigation of child sexual abuse and serious physical abuse. The third part of this thesis examines the interlinking between the main theoretical foci, organisational change and the construction of a social problem. The results of an investigation from key staff, Police and other agency personnel, from seven New Zealand Police Department Districts, interviewed in three waves over a two and a half year period, are reported. The total number of key staff from each wave was 93, 80 and 68. The results of the first part of the thesis is that through effective lobbying by the women's movement and child protection groups child sexual abuse has become a recognised social problem. In the second part of the thesis the following were found to be crucial factors in the shaping of organisational responses to child sexual abuse: The role of middle managers in the implementation of organisational change policies in assigning or not assigning appropriate resources. The role of the top management in the ownership of organisational change policies the procedures. Continual staff turnover and the policy of staff rotation limited the successful implementation and continued support for the National Abuse Policy. This factor, staff turn over and/or rotation, will impact on the success of any organisational change policy. The extent of the training provisions for police officers at all levels within the organisation and the maintenance of that training at a national and district level. Acceptance of the multidisciplinary investigative approach which differed from more traditional policing approaches. The internal and external pressure on the Police to implement and maintain a high profile response in the child sexual abuse field. The results of the third part of the thesis is that the Police Department played a role in the public recognition of child sexual abuse as a social problem and as a result had to implement an operational response through the development of a National Abuse Policy.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis describes the process of concentration and centralisation of the top New Zealand corporate class fraction at three levels - the corporate agent, the corporate agency and the corporate structure. These three different perspectives are seen, first, at the level of the empirical evidence of concentration and centralisation over time, and second, at the level of theoretical explanation and lastly, at the level of the sociology of knowledge, that is, how the theories themselves locate within economic cycles. The two empirical bases of this study are the survey of the top thirty companies directors and the top thirty companies networks of.1966, 1976 and 1986. A centrality analysis used on the latter three data sources, found that at the peak of the longwave (1966) when accumulation was high within the protected New Zealand economy, there were few corporate interlocks, suggesting that centralisation (the destruction of already formed capitals) was not a problem. But by the economic downturn (1986) corporate interlocks had proliferated reflecting the insecure nature of the corporate economy in crisis. The main conclusions drawn from the survey and the centralisation data sources positively corroborate the Marxist thesis that the corporate class fraction (as agents of capitalism) are in a free market economy as much directive as reactive to the state, that banks operate at direct and indirect levels of intervention on this class fraction and that there is some evidence of corporate class cohesion.

Abstract (sommario):
Class mobility in farming works both ways, some farmer's children are unable to afford a farm, while others from non-farm families do succeed in farm ownership. The literature reviewed in this thesis suggests this situation is related to New Zealand's economic history. In the past small family farms have benefited from both secure markets and governments whose interests have been closely bound up with high productivity. This has led the state to offer cheap credit to prospective farmers with little cap1al of their own. Upward mobility has been possible, but at the same time state support has enabled relatively small farms to remain viable, and many of these are unable to secure farm ownership for all family members. In this thesis I explore class mobility and career patterns among farm employees and consider their wider implications. There are many ambiguities in farm employment in New Zealand which stem from the predominance of petty bourgeois farm owners. Such farmers must deal with the capitalist markets of other sectors when they purchase inputs or sell their product but family workers may act as a bulwark against commercial pressures by accepting lower incomes. Similar conditions may be forced on working class farm employees with no chance of ownership. The high number of people leaving farm employment offers indirect confirmation of such problems and this thesis investigates the context in which departures occurred. Farm employees consist of three groups, those without interest in farm ownership, those with an interest and little chance of success, and those whose family background ensures farm ownership. Many farms only have one employee and take on non-family labour for short periods when the family labour which would otherwise do the task is unavailable. Some of the people they employ are offspring of neighbouring farm owners. This variation in class interests has exacerbated the disinclination of farm employees to lake collective action in the face of poor wages and conditions. By tracing a sample of farm employees through the electoral rolls over a period of ten years, I have been able to contact three groups of farm employees: those who have left for non-farm work in the intervening period; those who have been farm workers for at least ten years; and those who have since become farm owners. This has given me an insight into the proportion of farm employees who take up farming hoping to own their own farm, and the problems involved in succeeding. People who have left farming also provide an important perspective on farm employment. I have correlated outcome of career by various background factors, principally father's occupation, aspiration, and education. Job history is also important to my analysis. All these factors influence class mobility, and may either increase or mask the action of each other in different circumstances. By looking at mobility I will demonstrate the way class relationships impinge on individual lives.

Retirement age migration is not new. However, it has recently been garnering the attention of both researchers and local policy makers. Older migrants present the possibility of economic stimulus without creating additional pressure on the labor market. That said, a majority of works on retirement migration come to the same conclusions. Conventional theories state that older people move to places based on natural amenities and recreation opportunities. Further, these findings are often utilize a binary dependent variable based on whether a county has achieved a certain level of growth from inmigration of all people age 60+. I argue that this view is too narrow. Older age migrants move for a variety of reasons. These motives also vary across different age, sex, and race-ethnicity characteristics of the migrants in question. Further, not all counties that attract older migrants have bountiful natural or recreation amenities. Not only have these unconventional retirement destinations (URDs) had different historical trajectories, they also possess a different kind of amenities that appeal to older people who have relocated to the area. Finally, a focus on binary retirement classifications misses both diversity in retirement patterns and fails to explicitly account for the influence of space in county desirability. The goal of this work is to address these issues. First, I discuss the history and theories of retirement migration. Second, I develop models accounting for variation across older age migrant groups with varying demographic characteristics. Third, I identify and describe URD counties. Fourth, I present the results of a small-scale survey, community leader interviews, and a new model with additional variables to get at what other kinds of things should be labeled as “amenities.” Finally, I examine the role of space in migration research. My analysis demonstrates that there is much to be learned from looking at spatial models, micro-regional effects, and relative advantage between neighboring counties. Results indicate that conventional theories of retirement migration, while not necessarily wrong, are at least incomplete. The addition of diversity, new amenities, and space may greatly enhance our understanding of older age migration and migration research as a whole.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractThis chapter conceptualizes the emergence of a techno-scientific field (TSF) as a multiscalar and progressive establishment of a new set of epistemic and social rules. Drawing on science and technology studies and field theories, we design an original conceptual framework that allows us to formulate three propositions to characterize the process of emergence of a TSF. We use the emergence of synthetic biology (Synbio) as a ‘laboratory’ to test this framework. Each proposition refers to a determinant dimension in the process of emergence—heterogeneity, hierarchy, and autonomy. First, we claim that heterogeneity (of disciplines, research questions, visions, social norms) is constitutive of the emergence of a new TSF. Second, the population of Synbio researchers is highly stratified; a core group of scientific entrepreneurs (incumbents and challengers) plays an active role in the process of emergence. Third, strategies for the control of external resources are crucial to the structuration of the field, which is mirrored by the prominent role of core-group members as boundary spanners. An original scientometric approach is used to create specific variables that allow us to investigate both network and field structural dynamics bridging qualitative and quantitative approaches.

Abstract (sommario):
Adult education and learning can be found in fields such as education, economics, sociology, cult urology, anthropology, and assessment in this field has connections with them. In the article we look at school-based and work-based assessment in adult education. We refer to the studies in the field, noting that the evaluation problem is addressed by researchers insufficiently, superficially and non-specifically, but at the same time we list some studies and documents in the field. We refer to the evaluation of the efficiency and effectiveness of learning at adult ages stating the systemic (organizational) evaluation model, the evaluation criterion being efficiency and the andragogic (personal) model, the evaluation criterion being effectiveness.

Abstract (sommario):
Background: Given the constant updating of social problems and changes in institutions designated to regulate them, approaches to their regulation, the whole complex of issues related to this sphere, remains constantly relevant. In the context of present-day Ukraine, which has not yet rid itself of characteristic post-Soviet notions about the nature of social problems and approaches to their regulation, this problem is particularly pressing. This requires the attention of sociologists and scientists in other fields that form the theoretical and methodological basis for social regulation. Purpose: Based on the analysis of the current situation in Ukraine, which is characterized by the predominance of the state in social regulation with the predominant use of its characteristic tool - social security, it is necessary to outline possible ways of modernizing approaches to regulating social problems. This primarily involves rethinking the current attitude towards social work in Ukrainian society and expanding the scope of application of this regulatory tool. Methods: The method involves the analysis of legislative documents related to the field of social regulation and publications by sociologists. Results: As a result of the conducted analysis, it has been established that in the current situation, the state's efforts aimed at maintaining its dominant role in regulating social problems using the instrument of social security and limiting the opportunities of civil structures, which are the main actors in the use of social work, have led to a crisis. The institutions intended for the democratic modernization of the domestic post-Soviet society, including social work, were unable to fulfill their purpose. Сonclusion: The tragedy of the war that modern Ukraine is experiencing creates certain opportunities for abandoning ineffective methods of regulating social problems. First of all, this involves limiting the state's influence in this sphere and expanding the fields of responsibility of specialized civil society organizations. It is characteristic of them to act mainly through social work methods. Such an approach will allow not only to increase the efficiency of the state by concentrating its efforts on the spheres and methods of regulation characteristic of liberal regimes, but also to increase the potential of civil society structures. This path of modernizing conceptual approaches to regulating social problems in conditions of war is marked not only by certain opportunities, such as the widespread dissemination of volunteer movements, but also by certain barriers, caused, in particular, by the traditional thinking of managers. Significant limitations include the preservation of traditional paternalistic attitudes among a significant portion of citizens, sharp reductions in their material and financial capabilities during wartime, and so on. Keywords: social regulation, social security, social work, civil society, modernization.

Abstract (sommario):
Questions around how the new class of online networking platforms can generate new types of human interactions and how the new media can help achieve humans’ goals have been key subjects of study in many research fields, including computer science, sociology, and planning. To further the inquiry into these questions, we may need to re-visit some of the key concepts about the relationship between the information and communications technologies and the society. This literature review essay intends to serve this purpose by enlisting and summarizing a series of different schools of thought in the creation of community in the digital era.

Abstract (sommario):
The present work "synchronizes" the achievements in various fields of natural science (mathematics, cybernetics, information theory, sociology, economics and history) to understand the modern picture of the world. The conceptual model proposed in the paper is simplified and serves to illustrate certain socioeconomic processes of the past and present. Undoubtedly, there is a "confirmation bias", since there is an element of subjectivism in every analysis. It can only be overcome by constructive criticism, not by ignoring facts, rejecting mathematical proofs and denying logical conclusions, for "Facts do not cease to exist because they are ignored" ( Aldous Huxley).

Abstract (sommario):
Background: Volunteering is a widespread practice in the world and in Ukraine in particular, an integral component of any civil society and a factor contributing to its development. The growing role and importance of volunteer structures in modern Ukrainian society, especially given the urgent need to consolidate efforts in the fight against the Russian aggressor not only on the military, but also on the social, cultural, economic, political, informational, international and other frontlines, activates the interest to this phenomenon of scholars in various fields, including sociologists. Purpose: determination of the specificity of understanding the phenomenon of volunteering in modern Ukraine in the national sociological discourse. Methods: methods of theoretical scientific research, in particular – analysis of documents, works of scholars related to research issues, secondary analysis of sociological research. Results: In the sociological scientific discourse, there are different interpretations of the phenomenon of volunteerism and the essence of the volunteer movement in the context of Ukrainian realities. Among the dominant trends, we can highlight the interpretation of volunteering as a means of regulating social problems, which is especially relevant during the Russian military invasion of Ukraine, when state institutions proved unable to respond to numerous social challenges provoked by Russian aggression, starting in 2014. Another line of research is focusing on volunteering as a social activity that has its own motives, social effects, types, forms of manifestation, objective patterns of functioning, etc. Taking into account the current situation in Ukraine, the definition of volunteering as a voluntary activity of citizens or public associations, directly or indirectly related to helping the civilian population, displaced persons and military personnel affected by the military conflict, dominates today among Ukrainian sociologists. Ukraine is on the way to the formation of a civil society, which gives rise to a view of volunteering from the perspective of its benefit to society to a greater extent than the interpretation of the essence of volunteering through the personal dimension of the activities and values of its participants. Conclusion: The issue of volunteering in Ukraine is relevant for modern Ukrainian scientific discourse. Increasing interest in the study of the phenomenon of volunteerism among Ukrainian scholars is connected with the activation of the volunteer movement as a result of numerous social challenges provoked by Russia's aggression against Ukraine and, accordingly, the need to study volunteer practices as a Ukrainian phenomenon during the war. Radical transformations in Ukrainian society at the current stage give rise to the relevance of the study of the volunteer movement from the point of view of its agency. Keywords: volunteering, volunteer movement, volunteer activity.

Abstract (sommario):
Contemporary legal science is facing the challenges of the modern age. In an attempt to answer the current very complex questions, which, beside from the questions from the field of law, are closely related to questions from the fields of medicine, philosophy, psychology and sociology, bioethical and moral dilemmas are opened. Their correct understanding are required certain theological knowledge, since that questions of life and death are basic religious topics. Contemporary bioethical issues such as in vitro fertilization, surrogacy, organ donation and euthanasia are some of the most topical and controversial. Faced with various personal biomedical dilemmas, people often turn to representatives of the Church, who give their answer from the aspect of church bioethics, which is different from secular bioethics. The author will try to answer the question whether the position of the Church should (and may) be ignored when determining the legal framework concerning the aforementioned issues, or whether the cooperation of the state and the Church is more necessary than ever before. What consequences can we face if constructive dialogue is absent?

Abstract (sommario):
Over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic, the contributions of the social sciences to discussions about pandemic management have become more visible and more significant. In this essay, I review major aspects of a sociology of the pandemic. After providing an overview of the potential contributions of the different fields of sociology (the “toolbox” of sociology), I discuss two main domains: first, social inequalities and how they relate to the process of the spread of COVID-19 from exposure and infection, and to the consequences of the pandemic in the wider population; and, second, the potential long-term effects of the pandemic on the life course.

Abstract (sommario):
Climate issues have altered power relations and become a political problem in the field of political science and international relations. Since the 1980s, climate debates have problematized and contributed to redefine the boundaries between national and international politics, hierarchies between economic and environmental priorities, and connections between human and natural dimensions, thus intervening in the definition of modes of regulation and conflict resolution nationally and globally. Therefore, climate change has also led to debates on the role of the State, international organizations, economic operators, corporations, and CSOs. Climate change has become a fundamental issue in the contemporary world, in all dimensions of social life, from local to global, affecting the way knowledge is produced and taught in various disciplines, including political science and international relations. This article introduces the Special Issue on ‘The Politics and Policies of Climate Change in Brazil’, addressing the subject from the perspective of political science, political sociology and international relations.

Abstract (sommario):
Literacy research has an important role to play in helping to shape educational policy and practice. The field of literacy research however is difficult to navigate as literacy has been understood and researched in many different ways. It encompasses work from psychology, sociology, philosophy and neuroscience, literary theory, media and literacy studies, and methodologies include a range of qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods approaches. In mapping this complex field, I draw on a systematic ‘scoping survey’ of a sample of peerreviewed articles featuring literacy research relevant to literacy education for children aged 5-11. Studies were deemed relevant if they: addressed literacy pedagogies and interventions; and/or provided pertinent insights (e.g. into children’s experiences of literacy); and/or offered implications for the range and scope of literacy education. The results of this survey are important in two ways. Firstly they help to articulate the range of literacy research and the varied ways that such research might speak to literacy education. Secondly they challenge easy distinctions between paradigms in literacy research. Recognising this complexity and heterogeneity matters given the history of relationships between literacy policy and practice in countries such as England, where polarised debate has often erased the subtle differences of perspective and confluence of interest that this survey illuminates. Based on the results of this survey I argue that an inclusive approach to literacy research is needed in educational contexts. Otherwise alternative and/or complementary ways of supporting children’s literacy learning may be missed, as will important possibilities for literacy education and children’s current and future lives.

Abstract (sommario):
The experiences and marginalisation of international organisation employees with caring responsibilities has a direct negative impact on the type of security and justice being built in conflict-affected environments. This is in large part because international organisations fail to respond to the needs of those with caring responsibilities, which leads to their early departure from the field, and negatively affects their work while in post. In this toolkit we describe this problem, the exacerbating factors, and challenges to overcoming it. We offer a theory of change demonstrating how caring for carers can both improve the working conditions of employees of international organisations as well as the effectiveness, inclusivity and responsiveness of peace and justice interventions. This is important because it raises awareness among employers in the sector of the severity of the problem and its consequences. We also offer a guide for employers for how to take the caring responsibilities of their employees into account when developing human resource policies and practices, designing working conditions and planning interventions. Finally, we underscore the importance of conducting research on the gendered impacts of the marginalisation of employees with caring responsibilities, not least because of the breadth and depth of resultant individual, organisational and sectoral harms. In this regard, we also draw attention to the way in which gender stereotypes and gender biases not only inform and undermine peacebuilding efforts, but also permeate research in this field. Our toolkit is aimed at international organisation employees, employers and human resources personnel, as well as students and scholars of peacebuilding and international development. We see these communities of knowledge and action as overlapping, with insights to be brought to bear as well as challenges to be overcome in this area. The content of the toolkit is equally relevant across these knowledge communities as well as between different specialisms and disciplines. Peacebuilding and development draw in experts from economics, politics, anthropology, sociology and law, to name but a few. The authors of this toolkit have come together from gender studies, political science, and development studies to develop a theory of change informed by interdisciplinary insights. We hope, therefore, that this toolkit will be useful to an inclusive and interdisciplinary set of knowledge communities. Our core argument - that caring for carers benefits the individual, the sectors, and the intended beneficiaries of interventions - is relevant for students, researchers, policy makers and practitioners alike.

Abstract (sommario):
Higher education related to water is a critical component of capacity development necessary to support countries’ progress towards Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) overall, and towards the SDG6 water and sanitation goal in particular. Although the precise number is unknown, there are at least 28,000 higher education institutions in the world. The actual number is likely higher and constantly changing. Water education programmes are very diverse and complex and can include components of engineering, biology, chemistry, physics, hydrology, hydrogeology, ecology, geography, earth sciences, public health, sociology, law, and political sciences, to mention a few areas. In addition, various levels of qualifications are offered, ranging from certificate, diploma, baccalaureate, to the master’s and doctorate (or equivalent) levels. The percentage of universities offering programmes in ‘water’ ranges from 40% in the USA and Europe to 1% in subSaharan Africa. There are no specific data sets available for the extent or quality of teaching ‘water’ in universities. Consequently, insights on this have to be drawn or inferred from data sources on overall research and teaching excellence such as Scopus, the Shanghai Academic Ranking of World Universities, the Times Higher Education, the Ranking Web of Universities, the Our World in Data website and the UN Statistics Division data. Using a combination of measures of research excellence in water resources and related topics, and overall rankings of university teaching excellence, universities with representation in both categories were identified. Very few universities are represented in both categories. Countries that have at least three universities in the list of the top 50 include USA, Australia, China, UK, Netherlands and Canada. There are universities that have excellent reputations for both teaching excellence and for excellent and diverse research activities in water-related topics. They are mainly in the USA, Europe, Australia and China. Other universities scored well on research in water resources but did not in teaching excellence. The approach proposed in this report has potential to guide the development of comprehensive programmes in water. No specific comparative data on the quality of teaching in water-related topics has been identified. This report further shows the variety of pathways which most water education programmes are associated with or built in – through science, technology and engineering post-secondary and professional education systems. The multitude of possible institutions and pathways to acquire a qualification in water means that a better ‘roadmap’ is needed to chart the programmes. A global database with details on programme curricula, qualifications offered, duration, prerequisites, cost, transfer opportunities and other programme parameters would be ideal for this purpose, showing country-level, regional and global search capabilities. Cooperation between institutions in preparing or presenting water programmes is currently rather limited. Regional consortia of institutions may facilitate cooperation. A similar process could be used for technical and vocational education and training, although a more local approach would be better since conditions, regulations and technologies vary between relatively small areas. Finally, this report examines various factors affecting the future availability of water professionals. This includes the availability of suitable education and training programmes, choices that students make to pursue different areas of study, employment prospects, increasing gender equity, costs of education, and students’ and graduates’ mobility, especially between developing and developed countries. This report aims to inform and open a conversation with educators and administrators in higher education especially those engaged in water education or preparing to enter that field. It will also benefit students intending to enter the water resources field, professionals seeking an overview of educational activities for continuing education on water and government officials and politicians responsible for educational activities
