La Société Auxiliaire d’Entreprises est fondée en 1924 par un important groupe énergétique pour construire des barrages hydroélectriques. Devenue indépendante, en quête de nouveaux débouchés, cette entreprise moyenne se reconvertit durant les années 1950 vers la construction de logements. Sous la conduite de deux entrepreneurs d’envergure, Gino Valatelli et son successeur Maurice Mathieu, elle parvient en quelques années à se hisser au premier rang des entreprises françaises de bâtiment. Spécialiste des grands ensembles, la Société Auxiliaire constitue un acteur majeur de la modernisation de la France des Trente Glorieuses, vue sous l’angle de l’urbanisation, du progrès du confort moderne et de l’évolution d’une des branches principales de l’économie, le bâtiment. Elle offre le premier exemple de grande entreprise, au sens moderne du terme, dans l’histoire du logement en France. Ce travail se veut une histoire d’une entreprise dont il cherche à mettre en lumière les originalités de la croissance, mises en perspectives avec une branche professionnelle encore peu étudiée et, au-delà, avec les grandes transformations liées à l’industrialisation et l’urbanisation de la société française. Il souhaite apporter une vision longtemps négligée, celle des constructeurs, au vaste chantier de l’histoire de la ville du temps présent et, particulièrement, du logement social. Cette étude permet de comprendre comment les principales sociétés du bâtiment ont dû innover en matière de stratégies afin de pouvoir répondre à une demande sociale exceptionnelle. A ce titre, l’étude du système d’entreprise apporte aussi une contribution à l’histoire du travail
The Company S. A. E was incorporated in 1924 by an important energy group to build power dams. This medium size company become independent and searching for new outlets it turned over to residential construction activities in the 1950’s. Under the leadership of two renowned contractors, Gino Valatelli and his successor Maurice Mathieu, it managed within a few years to pull itself to first rank of the French building trade companies. Big housing estates specialist, the Company S. A. E became one of the main actors of modernization of the “Thirty Glorious Years” France, with regards to urbanization, progress, modern conveniences and to evolution of one of the main branches of economy, the building industry. It gave the first example of large company in the modern meaning of the word, in the French housing history. This work is a story of a company and tries to enlighten the original features of its growth compared with a professional branch still hardly studied and, beyond this, with the great transformations linked to industrialization and urbanization of French society. It wishes to show a view which has been overlooked for ages, the constructors’ view of the wide work of nowadays town history and especially of social housing. This study allows to understand how the main building trade companies had to innovate, in order to meet an exceptional social demand. On this account, the study of the set up business system also contributes to work history
