Testo completoThe thesis analyzes the changing orientation of the transnational organization of socialist parties facing the national project of the Zionist Movement in Palestine and later regarding the Israeli government's clams in the context of the Middle East Conflict up to the 1973 war. The first part is a historical recount of the origins of the S. I. ' policy throughout its predecessors' points of view, concerning the rise of the Jewish question, the Zionist project and the Zionist labour party since the end of the 19th century. It stresses the diverse changing attitudes and explains the reasons for these modifications. Moreover, the thesis examines the evolution of the S. I. 's policy towards the demands of its Zionist member party and its positions linked with the Israeli-Arabic Conflict, from 1945 to 1956, which evolves to the massive socialist engagement behind Mapai and the new elements encouraging this move. At last, this research points at the vicissitudes of the pro Israeli policy of the S. I. Between the Sinai campaign and the 1973 war, which reveals the roots of the reorientation of the S. I. 's policy in the region after 1973. The thesis in its conclusions shows the different factors intervening in the policy decision-making process within the organization. By insisting on the ethical principles and moral engagements of the movement on the one hand, and on the political and national interests of the member parties, especially the Europeans, on the other hand, it permits us to consider the interpenetration of the ideological and political dimensions of an organization that defines its objective as to produce effects of solidarity in the name of democratic socialism's ethics and the limits of this solidarity

Testo completo“That is the general class (al-ṭabaqa al-ʿāmma) […].Everyone receives a salary, everyone takes part to this general class. They say that there is a trade union for workers and a trade union for civil servants. Right. But, what is the difference between the two: the worker works and receives a salary; the civil servant works and receives a salary. Without salary, neither of the two can feed themselves that is to say that both are equal in everything” . Thus, Gamāl ʿAbd al-Nāṣir defines how he intends to revise the Egyptian society after the adoption of the National Charter (al-miṯāq al-waṭanī) in 1961, namely almost ten years after the Free Officers' coup d'État. He aims at gathering the Egyptian people in a vast class, a working and deserving one, beyond the Marxist proletariat. The middle class during the fifties and sixties resembles a melting pot of social strata from the descendants of the interwar effendiyya to the new-graduated legions of civil servants who invade the administrations and the public sector, by way of the urban petite bourgeoisie who gain access to education, after leaving its rural background. The departure of the cosmopolitan minorities after the Suez Crisis in 1956, the massive nationalisation leaded by the State, and the foundation of the United Arab Republic (1958-1961) accelerate the replacement of the former social strata by a new hierarchy more Egyptian and often less higher-educated: civil servants, employees, small business owners, artisans, teachers and sellers. They represent the main target population of social and economic reforms; torn between their desire for modernity, the encouragement of the State and their attachment to a traditional religious culture, these intermediate strata contribute to remodel the Egyptian national identity. Despite the sustained attention for this entity since its promotion by Muḥammad ʿAlī's reforms, the historiography finds difficult to define precisely its social, economic and cultural outlines . As Dror Wahrman explains it, the designation of “middle class” is more the result of a political project than a rank in social hierarchy: believing in its existence and alluding to it suffice to make it live in the imaginary of a society . That is why I choose to study the intermediate strata of Egyptian hierarchy during the Nasser years through its representation and evocation in the mainstream press (as a way of defining how to be modern), in intellectual magazines (as a key to understand the “new society” (al-muğtamaʿal-ğadīd) and the specificity of Egyptian socialism) and through the official statistics (as a development indicator)

Testo completoHow can we explain the fact that the Zionist experience in Palestine did not conclude in chaos? From its foundation on May 14, 1948, what prevented the young Israeli democracy from dissolving despite opposing factors such as wars, mass immigration beyond calculation and economic crises? To answer these questions and to understand the achievements of the Zionist revolution, one must move beyond the traditional explanatory frameworks of nationalism, liberalism or socialism. Starting with the Mapai victory (under the leadership of David Ben-Gurion) at the elections for the eighteenth Zionist Congress of 1933, Labour Zionism became the leading ideology within the Zionist movement. Over time, the cultural and political influence of Labour Zionism succeeded to influence the Yishuv, which has lead to a unique historical phenomenon: for the first time, a movement claiming to be part of socialism created a sovereign state; it laid the foundations of a democratic entity; and shaped the set of values for a new nation. The hypothesis of this thesis is that Labour Zionism was a project that was linked to the republican tradition. Without always being fully aware of it, Socialist Zionists were, in their own way, experimenting and implementing republican ideas. In keeping the interests of the greater society above individual interests, the Labour movement developed a new political universe with modern institutions and a civic virtue that aimed to protect the polity from dissolution. The republican ambition of Labour Zionism was embodied in its conception of democracy as egalitarian, patriotic and imbued with civic virtue. In order to offer a faithful recounting of the neoliberal turning point of the Israeli economy in 1985, and the role of the Israeli political left in this social and economic paradigmatic switch, this thesis draws on the primary sources kept in the state archives in Jerusalem. In using the records of the Labour movement, this thesis retraces the great 'moments' of Socialist Zionism, from its Russian Revolutionary origins (1905) to its decline at the time of Israel's definitive entry into the 'new economy' in the early 1990s.In the context of increasing tensions within Israeli society between social groups, and the moral crisis following the Lebanon war (1982), this thesis argues that liberal ideas triumphed over republican ideals. In depicting this transformation, the contemporary political turmoil (the so-called 'civic crisis') is put into perspective
