Abstract (sommario):
Ajzen's Theory of Planned Behavior with the addition of Perceived Moral Obligation was used to investigate the behavioral intentions of 65 caseworkers of the Children's Services Division (CSD) to cooperate with Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASAs) on cases involving abused or neglected children. Hierarchical regression analyses indicated that the subjective norms and perceived moral obligation constructs were significant predictors of the three behavioral intention categories and of all three categories combined. The two constructs, however, seem to have a considerable amount of overlap, suggesting that they may be measuring what is broadly called "social pressure to perform/not to perform 11 the target behavior. Perceived Behavioral Control was not significant in any categories and the attitude measure was marginally predictive. Possible reasons for the nonsignificant contributions of the two constructs include low inter-item correlations, questionnaire format, missing data concentrated in the two constructs, and finally, the notion that the caseworkers' attitudes and perceptions of control were of little consequence in their decisions to cooperate with CASAs. Of the three behavioral intention categories, all models performed best for the second category, 11voluntarily sharing pertinent Information about the cases with CASAs." The attitude construct performed best for this category, especially in the first and second models. Unlike the other two, this asked about the caseworkers' 11voluntary" cooperation. This finding seems to confinn the argument that Ajzen's models work better for a behavior for which one perceives greater volitional control. Prior, direct working experience with CASAs turned out to be an essential part of the attitude construct. The tested models performed better with the 54 caseworkers who had had direct working experience with CASAs in the last .. 24 months. This finding seems to indicate that the data from the 11 "no-experience" workers should not be combined with that of the 54 workers. Future studies of the theory of planned behavior with this sample are discussed.

social-historical conditions. Guided by Netto's (2005) thesis that the profession contains a syncretic structure originate its social-professional condition in monopoly capitalism, we adopt the foundations of this structure, identified by the cited author, as the guiding threads of the reflections developed here, consecutively, has double justification. First is that the foundation of professional ethics is Social Work itself, and therefore, the theoretical-philosophical foundation it incorporates, professional morality and the ethicalpolitical effects of professional work, as well as the Code of professional ethics (BARROCO, 2003) are products that correspond to the demands and social needs placed on the profession, and, simultaneously, the choices that it makes under precise historical conditions. That is, the Social Work is carried out ethically from the determinants that explain it professionally. The second one is that the social question, the everyday and the "manipulation of empirical variables" (NETTO, 2005), as the foundations of the syncretic structure of Social Work, are taken here as those that guarantee the registration and the periodical update of Social Work in the division of labor, since they are only feasible by the correct articulation between the three highlighted grounds, forming or not syncretic components in the profession. If these fundamentals support the professional statute of Social Work, that is, their professional status, the ethical configuration of the profession necessarily passes through them, justifying them as conductors of the research. If the professional statute of Social Work results from the dynamism existing between the requisitions and demands placed on the profession and its "own reserves of forces", according to the same analysis of Netto (2005), the ethical condition of Social Work is engendered at the heart of this dynamism and expresses the social contradictions existing between one and the other. Thus, it is constituted by the professional statute of the Social Work itself, while simultaneously focusing on it as its ethical constituent. Given the radical historicity implied in this process, we inquire about the ethical perspectives potentially present in Social Work, in the face of contemporary capitalism ideologically articulated by neoliberalism and its immanent conservative condition; this scenario is compounded by traits that mark the formation of Brazilian society and state, persistent throughout history and which are evidenced today by the confrontation of the sequels of the social question, by the way of its moralization and by the militarization of daily life. The analysis of contemporary capitalism has shown a dominant ethos oriented by the values of competition, competitiveness, individualism, but also order and discipline, which guide the current sociability and rebate in the profession for the particularities processed in the dynamism between demands and requisitions professionals at such a conjuncture and the "own reserves of forces" of Social Work. In this place, we have identified the possibility of establishing a strictly normative / legalistic professional ethics compatible and functional to neoliberal-conservatism, which, precisely because of its enhanced dynamism, is confronted with the professional ethics built in the center of the ethical project in the last decades, and that is expressed in the Code of Ethics of 1993

Abstract (sommario):
This study was designed to extend the research on ethical beliefs to child-oriented mental health practitioners. The purpose of the study was to identify the beliefs and practices of psychiatrists, psychologists, and social workers regarding confidentiality, competence, and multiple relationships, and to determine whether ethical beliefs vary by profession, gender, or other demographic and professional characteristics. A two-part questionnaire was mailed to 3000 child-oriented psychiatrists, psychologists, and social workers regarding their ethical beliefs in the areas of competence, confidentiality, and multiple relationships. A total of 1029 responses were obtained. Part One of the questionnaire addressed demographic and professional information, and Part Two contained 43 behavior description stems. Respondents were asked to indicate the degree to which they felt each behavior was ethical, using a Likert-like scale. Significant (p <.001) differences were obtained between the three professional groups in their beliefs regarding multiple relationships, competence, and the total ethical belief rating. Psychiatrists were the least conservative/most accepting in their ethical belief ratings, social workers were the most conservative/least accepting and psychologists tended to fall in the middle on each measure. In addition, female practitioners endorsed a significantly (p < .001) more conservative viewpoint than did male practitioners in multiple relationships, competence, and total ethical behavior ratings. Although respondents were most in agreement in their respective beliefs about confidentiality, a significant (p < .05) difference was found for gender, with females being more conservative/less accepting than males. In the area of multiple relationships, psychiatrists indicated a greater willingness to engage in relationships such as treating the child of a close friend, and entering into business or social relationships with current or former clients, than either social workers or psychologists. Additionally, respondents as a group were more likely to rate as acceptable breaking confidentiality when working with children than when working with adolescents (p <.001). This study points to the differences, as well as areas of general agreement, in the ethical beliefs of psychiatrists, psychologists, and social workers.

Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of this study was to identify salient factors contributing to the overrepresentation of African Americans in the child welfare system. This study seeks to examine whether or not public child welfare workers are biased in their assessments of African Americans, and if years of experience influence their judgment. By understanding some of the salient factors that contribute to these disproportionate numbers, Child Welfare Services can begin to revamp their programs and services to ensure that they are more culturally sensitive and equitable.

Abstract (sommario):
This work had as its object the challenges arising in the field of Social Security in Brazil for the materialization of Social Work Ethical-Political Project Professional (PEPPSS), with the intention to analyze how the reverberations of neoliberalism under the Social Security resulted in new challenges to PEPPSS, and also examine the struggles and victories fought by CFESS / CRESS together to face these challenges in the context of counter-reform state. The interest in analyzing this issue arose from concerns about the debate which arose in Social Services regarding a possible "crisis" which focused on the PEPPSS, widespread, particularly in the first decade of this century, in the context of consolidation of professional design. The guiding hypothesis of the research considered the beginning of this century points to a cyclical crisis of capital, which brings the aftermaths PEPPSS. For the process of collecting and analyzing data documentary research was carried out, based on the reports of the National Meetings CFESS / CRESS, during the years 2000 to 2012, specifically the axis of Social Security. Regarding the approach, we used the quantitative-qualitative, and as to their objectives, the research was classified as descriptive. Was conceived as major categories of public policy analysis and social control. Regarding the results, we found the number of proposals, recommendations and actions adopted in national general meeting, thus obtained: 106 43 propositions and recommendations for social welfare policy; Propositions 42 and 18 recommendations for health policy; 44 propositions eight recommendations for social security policy. In order to understand Social Security beyond the tripod indicated by the 1988 Constitution, there are decisions that affect other policies. It is noteworthy that the resolutions presented in the analyzed documents demonstrate the efforts of all in giving answers to questions that arise at this juncture, that portrays the concern qualify increasing intervention of professional social work in public policy, focusing on its size policy and reaffirming committed relationship should be established primarily to users in the expansion and effective social control. Indeed, regarding the responses of the Joint CFESS / CRESS the aftermaths of neoliberalism in Social Security is evident that the struggle for a Public Security beyond the logic of contributory insurance is still ideologically. Despite the willingness to conceive it in a broader sense, as Designs Charter of Maceió (2000), discussions, proposals and recommendations contained in the reports of the meetings of the national assembly highlight the prominence of this system as priority policies covering health, welfare and social assistance.

Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of this study is to examine social workers’ discourses about the Swedish sex purchase law and how they perceive that the sex purchase law and the social workers’ professional ethical principles affect the social workers’ ability to support people who are selling sex. This study is a discourse analytical interview study based on a social constructionist perspective. The study focuses on analyzing the interviews based upon an inductive method. The interviews are qualitative and semi-structured. The interviews were conducted by interviews with three social workers with experiences of working with people who sell sex. The central focus of the study is to analyze the social workers’ statements that are regarded as their perceptions. The statements serve as arguments that answers the purpose questions. The results show that the interviewed social workers perceive that the sex purchase laws do affect the social workers’ ability to support people who sell sex. On the other hand, they show disagreement on whether the social workers’ professional ethical principles affected the social workers’ ability to support people who sell sex.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper examines the reality of practice of social workers in the health services of the Air / RJ, with reference to the ethical-political project of professional social services, expressed in the Code of Professional Ethics, the Law which regulates the profession, and as guidelines for curriculum ABEPSS. The interest in performing this study in professional areas, little discussed in academic circles, defined by the need for theoretical research that enables analyze, develop and disseminate a segment of the class, often unknown and alien to all those working in Social Service. We believe that this study presents a predominantly exploratory nature. For a better understanding of the universe's military Air Force, it is essential to receive "in reality, the limits and possibilities of the real movement of its historicity. To this end, we had the foundation to the theoretical critical-Marxist dialectic that allows to go beyond the appearance of facts. It is true that an institution whose function is close to the model institution "closed", positivist and conservative, based on the principles of hierarchy and discipline, signal, a priori, an impossibility of a real professional emancipatory project. When we conduct an analysis of the statements of social workers interviewed, we tried to consider the everyday professional practice, which reveals presence and absence points to the immediate problems reveals / hides, moving from the particular to the universal. This study aimed to research the locus of the Air Force Hospital in Rio de Janeiro: HAAF, HCA and HFAG. It is in these spaces, an action challenging for those professionals who seek to break bureaucratic practices and conservative and aimed at strengthening democratic practices and collective fulfillment of the demands in the institutional context.

Abstract (sommario):
Research in the area of religion and spirituality in social work practice is lacking minority practitioner representation. This phenomenological study explored the questions of how American Muslim social workers define and experience the religious/spiritual, and perceive the propriety of integrating either, in practice. Ibn Khaldun and Durkheim, early social theorists, suggested that group feeling and affiliation impact personal and professional perception and decision making. American societal views of Muslims are often negative and uninformed. A group of 15 Muslim practitioners with bachelor's or more advanced degrees in social work were recruited through a survey administered via an Internet survey site. In depth telephone interviews were conducted that clarified personal and professional descriptions and experiences of the religious/spiritual. Transcript statements were critically reviewed for range of meaning (horizonalization) and reduced to their thematic essences following the phenomenological thematic analysis paradigm. Trustworthiness of the study was verified through ongoing bracketing of the researcher's assumptions and maintenance of a data collection journal. Findings indicated that participants favored a client-centered approach based on the social work standard of self determination. Most participants differentiated and acknowledged the value of spirituality more than religion in practice. Practitioners, cognizant of possible negative interpretations of Muslims and Islam, rely on the client to initiate religious themes in therapy. This finding suggests the need for future study of client views. Implications for social change are evidenced in the clients' assurance that Muslim practitioners' professional integration of the religious/spiritual is client driven and bound by competent social work ethical practice.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis attempted to examine the effects of on-call work schedules on professional social workers. This was achieved through the use of a demographic survey and qualitative face-to-face and phone interviews. A total of 15 interview questions were explored, the subjects included: the impacts of on-call work on psychological, physiological, emotional well-being and work family balance of professional social workers. Participants were recruited using availability sampling and the sample size consisted of nine participants. The nine interviews were transcribed and analyzed using thematic analysis. The researcher identified common themes related to on-call work schedules. Results found that participants suffered familial disruption as well as impacts on their well-being and support system. There was also a lack of access to patient information and similar difficulties experienced by participants while on-call. Participants also provided suggestions in order to improve on-call experiences. It is recommended that similar studies be conducted on a larger sample size to insure generalizability and a greater understanding of the impacts on-call work has on the social work profession.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis investigates men social workers within the context of the British welfare state. The thesis focuses on three central themes: how discourses of welfare frame the categories 'men' and 'men social workers'; the differential locations of men social workers within the social work profession; and how particular discourses structure men's identifications and dis-identifications with social work and women social workers' representations of the category 'men social worker'. Empirical research was undertaken through eight focus group discussions and twenty five individual interviews with men and women social workers and non-participant observation of five social work team meetings. From this research, it is argued that men social workers both identify and dis-identify with their gender and professional identities. This thesis demonstrates how particular discourses, such as discourses of 'heroic action men', 'gentle-men' and 'gender balance' recur at each level of analysis (discourses of welfare; men's locations within the profession; and women and men's accounts) (re)producing contingent and often contradictory representations of 'men social workers'. Once the question of men in social work is raised, arguments for and against men's presence in the profession seem to dominate, such that these discourses are invoked as justificatory. The data from group discussions, individual interviews and team meetings indicate that many (both men and women) research participants attempted to reconcile men's gender and professional identities in what has been described as a 'non-traditional' occupation for men. Men used a variety of discourses, such as 'gender balance' and 'other centred career choice' to represent themselves as social workers. However, the conjoining of the categories 'men' and 'social work' produces both antagonistic and complementary identifications in relation to each of these categories. These are not monolithic categories, so identifications with either 'men' and / or 'social work' may also be contradictory and antagonistic. Direct discussion of men's gendered practices and identities whether as social workers or men service users was notably absent in team meetings. However, the question of men's gendered identities did arise in interviews with women who both described how they were sexually harassed by men colleagues, and express some scepticism about men social workers as providing 'anti-sexist' services. This thesis contributes in-depth understandings of men social workers as well as a critical engagement with debates on masculinities, identities and discourse.

Abstract (sommario):
This study was conceived as an attempt to determine .and analyze factors deterring participation in continuing professional education among social workers in environments where continuing education for relicensure is mandatory and voluntary. The specific research design implemented to complete this study was the ex-post facto descriptive design. The sample included 106 social workers randomly selected in the state of Texas where continuing education is mandatory and 94 social workers in the state of Louisiana where continuing education is voluntary. The instrument used was the Deterrent to Participation Scale developed by Scanlan (1983) and a demographic inventory. Scanlan (1983) earlier identified six factors deterring participation in continuing professional education: Disengagement, Lack of Quality, Family Constraints, Cost, Lack of Benefit, and Work Constraints. The study concluded that social workers in both states considered work constraint as a major factor deterring participation in continuing professional education. Also the factors of cost and lack of quality were also considered as crucial barriers in their efforts to participate in continuing professional education. The Wilks' multivariate test of significance of the means and univariate F tests at alpha level p < .05 revealed differences in the combined mean scores of social workers in both states when the variables of age, marital status, and position held were tested. In comparing the ranking of the six factors deterring participation in continuing professional education, a Spearman rank correlation coefficient revealed respondents in both states rank the six factors in the same order. The findings were congruent with earlier studies of barriers to participation in continuing education among professionals. The researcher recommended a study which would include a larger number of social workers and a longitudinal study to measure changes in barriers to participation in continuing professional education.

Abstract (sommario):
The aim of this study was to explore the emotional labour of domestic violence shelter workers. A qualitative approach was used and four professionals were interviewed. The interviewees described that they were expected to provide different types of services which include empowering their clients so that they can survive independently after leaving the shelter. The findings showed that the shelter workers hide or suppress different types of emotions, especially when they are frustrated or emotionally affected by the client's situation. According to the workers, they experienced stress as a consequence of the emotional labour, and they expressed that working in the field of domestic violence had made it difficult for them to trust men. Making a difference in the lives of the clients was described as a source of motivation and help them to cope with the negative aspects of the shelter work. Even though the findings cannot be generalised, the study provides comprehensive information about how emotional labour in this particular context can be perceived. The shelter workers described that the levels of satisfaction they get from helping clients resolve their problems were more significant than the negative consequences of emotional labour.

Abstract (sommario):
Burnout is a prominent issue among the social work profession. Methods to mitigate the effects of burnout have received considerable attention in social work research. This study focuses on a potential method of coping with burnout; volunteerism. While literature is scarce regarding the effects of volunteerism on burnout rates among social workers, studies in related fields such as nursing, public-sector public administrators, and nonprofit workers indicate that volunteerism has potential benefits against burnout. This study’s purpose is to determine whether involvement in volunteer service is related to lower rates of burnout among social workers. This quantitative study uses data from a non-random purposive sample of 442 social workers who completed a survey posted on the social work board of an online forum, Reddit and the networking site, LinkedIn. Survey questions captured participants’ demographic, volunteerism, and burnout rates using the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Services Survey (MBI-HSS). Analysis of the data led to findings which do not support the original hypothesis of this study or the available literature. A plausible explanation is, that for social workers, the volunteer work is so like their profession that engaging in volunteerism does not provide the respite necessary for recovery from the effects of burnout.

Abstract (sommario):
Research has indicated that social workers are more politically active than the general public (Wolk, 1981; Parker and Sherraden, 1991), but their effectiveness has been questioned (Mathews, 1982). There are differences among social workers, but explanations of differences between "very active" and "inactive" have relied primarily on practice setting or method. However, research in political science has shown that income, education, involvement in associations, and perceived political efficacy, are significant predictors of who does not participate (Verba, Schlozman, and Brady, 1995). Five hundred certified social workers were surveyed regarding how often they engaged in political activities (e.g., voting and campaigning) between 1995 and 1997; 242 surveys were returned. Whereas 92 percent of respondents voted in 1996, fewer than 1 in 5 met with government officials or worked in a political campaign; only 3 percent testified before a legislative body. Information on each respondent's performance of specific political tasks was used to create a Political Participation Score (PPS). Scores range from 0 through 11, with higher scores indicating greater political activity. Six percent of respondents were "inactive" (3 or less), 88 percent were "active" ( 4 through 7), and 6 percent were "very active" (9 or more). The PPS was the dependent variable in ordinary least squares regression analysis, used to estimate the effect of political socialization, resources, perceived political efficacy, and involvement with professional associations on certified social workers' political activity. The significant predictors (p≤.05) were political efficacy (b=.237), recruitment to action by a social work association (b=2.34), interest in public affairs (b=.210) and activity in NASW (b=.165). Income and education were not significant predictors of the respondents' participation. The significant role of political efficacy suggests that strategies to increase social workers' perceived efficacy could increase their political activity. Greater performance of high-cost activities (e.g., testifying or meeting with government officials) could increase social workers' input into the development of social policy. Social learning theory (Bandura, 1978) is utilized to identify strategies for use by social work educators and professional associations to increase social workers' perceived efficacy and, therefore, the performance of higher-cost political acts.

Abstract (sommario):
Magister Artium (Social Work) - MA(SW)
Primary Health Care (PHC) is the cornerstone of health care globally, nationally and locally and, therefore, should be regarded as the foundation of health care provision. In South Africa, Community Day Clinics (CDCs) are part of the bouquet of services that is being offered at a PHC level. There are various factors that generate inconsistency in the provision of care to people accessing these CDCs. The purpose of this study was to identify and explore how these factors impact on the care practices that health care professional’s provide. Research suggests that the majority of health care workers are women, who play a double role as carers in their professional and private lives. Therefore, the political ethics of care, a feminist theoretical approach, was utilized to understand care practices in these health settings. The aim of the study was to develop an in-depth understanding of the care practices of health care workers at two CDC facilities on the Cape Flats. A qualitative research methodology was used to explore and identify the phenomenon under study. The research project followed an explorative and descriptive research design, as the researcher sought to understand the care practices of health care workers and how their values and ethics further influenced care practices at these two CDC settings. The data was gathered using semi-structured one-on-one interviews, and later analysed using qualitative thematic analysis. The research findings were grouped in terms of the values entrenched in the political ethics ofcare, which are attentiveness, responsibility, competence, responsiveness and trust. The research findings identified various aspects that, either negatively or positively, impact on these values. Finally, recommendations were made to management, as well as care workers. These recommendations were in terms of implementing care services that are attentive to service-users and care-workers; providing a service that takes into consideration the value of responsibility; the provision of competent services; and finally creating trusting relationships within the CDC.

Abstract (sommario):
In this thesis by published work nine works are presented, prefaced by a Critical Summary and Review which discusses the genesis of the work and its theoretical presuppositions, and evaluates their contribution to knowledge. The work includes both sole-authored and collaborative writing. This published work adopts a social constructionist approach to knowledge in health and welfare. The first work explores critical approaches to child development and their relevance to professional practice. Subsequent work adopts a post-Wittgensteinian approach to language as practical activity, exploring how practitioners such as social workers and nurses do 'case work1 , making knowledge about people, events and situations in their talk and writing and, in doing so, enact the institutional order. An exploration of the ways in which practitioners construct their practice in reflective writing is a significant focus within several pieces of work. Attention is paid to what social actors (patients/service users and professionals) do in their interactions and communicative practices. Thus, talk and text are not treated as simple vehicles for conveying literal, factual descriptions but as the means by which moral adequacy is portrayed and authentic versions of events are established. These analyses draw inspiration from a variety of sources including micro sociology, discursive psychology and narrative analysis, emphasizing the practical-moral aspects of health and welfare practice in which the production of identity, for example as a caring practitioner, plays a key part. The published work has a strong practice orientation and the implications for professional education are highlighted throughout. 'Reflexive awareness' is promoted as a means by which health and welfare VIprofessionals may challenges tendencies to take practice for granted. By engaging in the processes of making the familiar strange, it is argued that better understandings of practice can be achieved and a stance of 'respectful uncertainty' deployed.

Abstract (sommario):
The aim of the study is to examine professional social workers experiences of legitimacy in conducting social work in Ghana’s capital Accra and to discuss possible sources of legitimacy. The idea is to problematize social work as a profession developed and constructed in Western contexts and exported to Ghana during the British colonization. The issue of legitimacy is examined from Ghanaian professional social workers subjective experiences of their meetings with clients and traditional authorities that historically been conducting social work in Ghana. The study is structured around three broad themes intending to explore the Ghanaian social workers experienced legitimacy as professionals in different sequences of the social work; the social workers experiences of legitimacy to (1) classify social problems, (2) to reason about social problems and (3) to take action on social problems. These themes are also basis for the fourth theme that provides a more explanatory discussion of the social workers experiences; (4) possible sources of legitimacy. The analysis conclude that the social workers experiences of legitimacy differ between whether the social work is conducted on an individual level or a community level, towards nuclear families or extended families and whether it is conducted in a social domain or institution that historically and traditionally been in the jurisdiction of traditional authorities or if it is a domain or institution that is recently introduced in the Ghanaian contexts due to modernization.

Abstract (sommario):
This study examined how the experienced social workers continued to learn as professionals in the context of Japanese social work. The findings have suggested that the challenges and struggles they confronted were closely related to their professional ways of being. We cannot understand their learning unless we set each person’s learning experiences in the context of their way of being a social worker. They saw their learning as something about changes in their understanding in varying ways. Though those perspective changes in learning varied widely depending on their learning situation, three components of professional learning have been identified: Experience; Opportunity; and Reflection. Experience describes how professional learning involves the interconnection of cumulative background experiences they had, which can include both within their professional work and outside. What counts as a learning Opportunity can vary considerably according to them. It makes good sense to treat learning opportunities not as a distinct one but as a unified entity. Reflection involves them seeing practice from different perspectives, in that their taken-for-granted assumption is challenged, which may lead to new possibilities that can make their practice different in their working context. These three components are not entirely distinct from each other, but inextricably interwoven. The findings reveal that there is the significant gap between what the social workers value in learning and what is expected from their organizations, professional associations, and universities in today’s uncertain working environments, in which they are required to ensure increased professional accountability for their performance with measurable standards. In the gap, voices of social workers have been underrepresented in the discourse of professional development. To share awareness of diverse and complex learning as experienced by social workers can be a first step in making a difference to professional learning in the context of Japanese social work.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis explores the ethical development of social workers and the role of supervision in that development. It begins with an examination of the social work context for the study, including the early history of social work and the ways in which it was influenced by the major social and cultural movements of the late 20th century, concluding with a discussion of both the threats posed and the possibilities emerging for social work in the 21st century. It then considers the ethical context for the study. It investigates the ethical theories and traditions that have contributed to the development of social work ethics and the role of professional ethics (including codes of ethics). It then proposes that a pluralist approach to social work ethics is the most appropriate way forward. This is followed by an examination of ethical development and the importance of reflection. Various models of ethical decision-making are compared and an inclusive, reflective model is found to be the most appropriate for social work in terms of both particular dilemmas faced and the overall development of workers as ethical decision-makers. The focus of the thesis then moves to supervision, exploring its history, its central place in social work and some of the problems that can arise for both supervisors and the social workers they supervise. It is argued that the reflection required to develop as ethical decision-makers is most logically located within the relationship and processes of supervision and that supervisors have an important role in guiding that reflection and development. The next part of the thesis describes the qualitative and action research strategies employed and examines the results emerging from the data. Participants in the focus groups were social workers who supervise other social workers, and they each met for two sessions, six months apart. Between the two sessions, they were asked to trial in supervision a framework for reflection on practice. The data emerging from the groups reflected the theoretical development begun in the early chapters, including the importance of reflection and the role of supervision in assisting the ethical development of workers, particularly in terms of deconstructing dilemmas and being able to articulate the reasons for decisions made. The thesis concludes that no one ethical theory is sufficient to support the ethical decision-making required for the practice of social work. Rather, a pluralist approach that allows a dilemma to be considered from a number of theoretical perspectives is more appropriate. Alongside this, an inclusive, reflective model of ethical decision-making reflects that pluralist approach and supports the ethical development of the individual worker. Supervision is vital in guiding the reflection required to make justifiable ethical decisions and to develop as ethical decision-makers.

Abstract (sommario):
This study explores the field of social work values in the social work profession. The aim of the study is to explore how social work values are related to empowerment practices and organizational structures inside the social work field. By using the perspective of empowerment and professional doxa these structures inside the social work field are explored in interviews with nine social workers. These nine interviews show how social workers relate to values insides their profession, how empowerment practices are done, and what kind of organizational conflicts social workers may experience. By using the perspectives of empowerment and professional doxa the interviews been analysed and connected to both local and global concerns for the social work field. Many professional conflicts were found by taking these perspectives that are discussed in this study, as for example role conflicts social workers could experience. Other conflicts were those of structural failures that caused harm to client contacts and economic factors that were deemed more important for organizations than good client outcomes.

Abstract (sommario):
Social work struggles between the dichotomy of “individual” and “society” as it is characterized as enhancing both individual well-being and social justice. As these are not always easily balanced and social work has limited autonomy, social workers must develop their capacity for making moral judgments and defend these within their various roles and responsibilities. Studies which explore the role of ethics in social work practice enhance the potential for maintaining a common identity. This exploration permits a deeper understanding of social work ethics and reinforces a common framework inclusive of purpose and standards for the profession. These studies also capture the contextual factors impacting on the moral agency of social workers, and thus substantiate the role for social work in a world with structured oppression. The purpose of this study was to obtain an in-depth understanding of social work ethics in the practice context of public hospitals in Greece. Using a case study design, data was gathered to explore and understand the role of social work ethics in daily practice and the formation of what is perceived as “good” practice. The analysis followed Yin‟s (1993) descriptive strategy. Data collection included fifteen in-depth interviews with hospital social workers, a group interview with social work academics, and a thematic analysis of the social work journal of the Hellenic Association of Social Workers (HASW). The meaning of ethical dilemmas and problems appeared to be constructed by personally held values, a lack of attention in social work education and the HASW on social work ethics, a professional emphasis on individualism rather than collectivism, and insufficient social protection in Greece. Importantly, these factors led to a fairly consistent response to ethical problems. “Having a clear conscience”, character traits such as bravery and imaginativeness, as well as the use of psychotherapy emerged as characteristics of “good” social work practice. These findings are of value to those who try to restore the values and ethics as central in social work. Values and ethics as key elements of social work expertise can lead social workers to a more competent and effective practice in terms of their ethical engagements.

Abstract (sommario):
Professional communication is growing in the field of applied linguistics. A lot of research has been done on business communication in different work places. However there is not much done on Social work professional communication in Botswana. This study analysed the types of texts produced by social workers in their professional setting, in order to find out whether there is a relationship between the writing done by professional social workers and the writing taught to social workers by the Communication and Study Skills department at the University of Botswana. The research method for this study combines two major research tools in qualitative inquiry which are text analysis and interviews. A range of documents were collected from social workers, these included informal documents, hand written during interviews with clients, to more formal reports that were addressed to relevant officers in the position of making decisions recommended in the reports. The documents were analysed using a new rhetoric approach to genre. I used a combination of text analysis and interviews in order to investigate the contexts in which the texts were produced. Academic texts produced by students during their fieldwork placement were also explored. The texts that the students write are long and unlike the reports produced by professionals, which focuses on the client’s story, they describe what the students have done and achieved. The significance is that; this discrepancy raises questions about the extent to which students are being prepared for professional writing. Students have indicated that their academic writing varies according to the preferences of individual lecturers rather than the requirements of the work situation and that after internship they are never given feedback about their performance and they also need additional training before they engage in fieldwork. I found that both formal and informal documents are written following a set format which reflects the precise institutional function of the text, but experienced social workers can manoeuvre the format creatively to communicate effectively about their clients. I have also found that professional genre has 9 moves while the students had 6 moves. This study aims to improve knowledge of writing of professional social workers and the writing of social work students on fieldwork placements in Botswana which might also be applicable to other settings. It will also provide a detailed discussion of effective pedagogies that will help social work students develop more of the competencies that are recognised in the workplace.

The present dissertation New demands for old questions: professional requests to social workers in philanthropic institutions after SUAS, had as main objective to analyze the requisitions of the philanthropic entities to the work of the Social Worker after the implementation of the Unique System of Social Assistance (SUAS), from 2005. carried out a critical analysis of the process of implementation of SUAS and the new regulations for the work of the philanthropic entities that this management system has developed throughout its institutionalization in Brazil that is permeated by disputes and contradictions between traditional and conservative practices and, on the other hand, that seek the professionalization of these services, historically linked to charity and benesse. It is verified that these regulations incorporate the managerialist and bureaucratic logic of the social policies reform, initiated in Brazil in the 1990s with the neoliberal appeal and that directly impact the requisitions to the professionals that work in these spaces, in particular the social workers.

Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of this qualitative study was to get a better understanding how professionals working with unaccompanied refugee children perceive and reflect on their emotions evoked by their work and on their preparedness to handle them. Therefore, I chose to investigate how the sample of professional recognised, expressed and managed their emotions at work; what role did support and self-reflection play in exploring emotions; how the professionals saw the role of emotions in their work with unaccompanied refugee children; and how the participants described their preparedness to handle their emotions from the social work education. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with nine professionals working directly with unaccompanied refugee children. The findings indicated a lack of consistency in the views; where some said emotions could be utilised as a tool in social work, others viewed that expressing emotions might be seen unprofessional. Self-reflection and support of the colleagues and the counsellor in handling emotions were valued by the participants; it was seen to be helpful in working on emotions and becoming a better professional. Another emerging theme was the lack of discussion about emotions in social work education.

Abstract (sommario):
Although auditors engage in considerable social interaction (Gibbins & Mason, 1988; Solomon, 1987), little is known about how social interaction influences an auditor's moral reasoning process. In order to address this gap, this study used an experiment to examine the effect of social influence on 288 auditors' moral reasoning on realistic moral dilemmas. The results of this study indicate that social interaction influences the moral reasoning of auditors. Auditors' level of prescriptive reasoning appears to increase after engaging in discussion of a realistic moral dilemma, particularly for those which discuss dilemmas with others at high levels of moral development, while auditors' level of deliberative reasoning appears to decrease after engaging in discussion of a realistic moral dilemma. At a practical level, these findings suggest that auditors should be encouraged to prescriptively discuss moral dilemmas with others of high levels of moral development as this tends to result in the use of more principled moral reasoning. In contrast, auditors should avoid deliberative discussion of moral dilemmas, as this tends to result in the use of less principled moral reasoning than would be used in the absence of discussion.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis critically analyses how social work practitioners construct moral-ethical decision-making in systems that are constituted as legal-rational authority and political-socioeconomic interests. Notions of moral-ethicality in practice are represented in social work literature and codified ethics in certain ways and this thesis argues that such representations do not conceive of ways in which the claimed ideals of social work might be achieved in the face of structural oppressions and power imbalance that facilitate disadvantage. A notion that there are possibilities for challenge and resistance by social work practitioners to the power of cultural pedagogy that is inherent in the discursive field of social work is articulated. This is a critical postmodern work with a postmodern approach and this thesis is premised on the works of Zygmunt Bauman, and his perspectives on morality, ethics, responsibility for the Other and power relations.
