Abstract (sommario):
The literature and research investigating why people choose social work as a career has tended to focus on motivational traits rather than on the choice experience itself. Whereas the vocational sector has moved to include a focus on the narrative processes involved with selecting a career, much of the social work research fails to capture the meaning-making processes individuals engage in to make sense of their career choices within their personal and social contexts. This research project describes the meaning-making processes two students participating in the social work program at Central Queensland University and I employ to understand our career choice experiences. Over a period of four years, using a research approach that combines Clandinin and Connelly’s (2000) narrative inquiry with Riessman’s (2003) emphasis on social positioning within narratives, Geraldine, John and I explore the interplay between individual, community and professional agendas in our past, present and imagined career choice experiences – particularly focusing on the impact of gender. Identifying the importance of caring as a hallmark of the profession and what draws us to social work, this co-constructed research text highlights the agendas that predominantly support women’s entrance into the profession and challenge men’s participation. Drawing on the metaphor of a quilt to describe our career choice experience, this project draws attention to the importance for aspiring social workers to carefully choose, cut and join together bits of gendered narrative material to create a professional story that both legitimises their entrance into the profession and to position them within the larger career sector.

Abstract (sommario):
This dissertation discusses the construction of a digital environment for bibliographical memory of social work at the Institute of Psychology, Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul. For many centuries, the library has been considered as the designated place to store, organize, disseminate and preserve registered information. This way, the library is recognized to be a space for memory, which utilizes technology towards the democratization of knowledge, which is also where the dissertation’s researcher works. This study is justified due to the lack of digital data on Social Work memory, concerning the bibliographical aspect at UFRGS (Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul). As theoretical categories, social memory and the library are considered as memory environments. This quantitative and qualitative research utilizes documental research from the university’s data base (Sabi), analyzing the existing library collection from 2009 to 2012, which is when the Social Work course was established at the university. During this documental research, 356 book titles and 41 journals were identified. To analize the obtained data from the identified books and journals, it was utilized the content analysis and statistical treatment through frequency distribution. A blog was created at the end of this investigation, which was entitled: The Bibliographical Memory of Social Work as a digital environment for bibliographical memory.

Abstract (sommario):
The thesis explores the potential of one way of facilitating and stimulating collaboration in Library and Information Science (LIS), through a specific scientific collaboration activity: creating, sharing and reusing data collection instruments, such as interview guides, questionnaires, and observation protocols. The four studies reported in the thesis can be read as a linear narrative, each study building on the previous and contributing to the following ones. Together the four studies describe the process exploring social and contextual aspects of LIS; developing requirements and designing a working prototype collaboratory; and evaluating how the prototype collaboratory was perceived by LIS professionals. Overall, the results show that whereas the benefits of an LIS collaboratory reported by the study participants focused on the greater good for LIS, the challenges reported focused on the individuals’ perspectives. Hence, a tension exists between supporting the greater good, and challenges for individuals concerning sharing and reusing data collection instruments in an LIS collaboratory. The thesis emphasizes the implications for the LIS discipline when new ways of working with data collection instruments would be introduced; the implications of addressing needs of a diverse target audience; and the implications for further design iterations of an LIS collaboratory, including rewarding contributions, and ensuring quality content in a collaboratory.

Abstract (sommario):
The inclusion process of people with disabilities in the labor market has been a subject largely discussed recently, thanks to affirmative action policies implemented in our country that are, slowly, but irreversibly changing the reality of employees with disabilities. Nowadays, virtual libraries arise as elements of education throughout life and are important aspect of human mediation action in a socio-historical perspective. This encourages us to question how one can create a virtual library gathering information contemplating assistive technology use‟s solutions at workplaces? Thus, the creation of a collaborative platform aims to promote inclusive labor process and, to this purpose, entities sites that seek social and labor inclusion of people with disabilities, accessibility both physical and digital and presence of technology as potentiating resources of inclusive processes are subjects of this investigation. Considerations towards Web design and requirements of usability, accessibility and interaction with users are also made. Thereby, using Internet resources available nowadays, we conducted a multi case‟s qualitative research, in seven large companies located in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and on-site observations, and the following questions guided this research: What information is relevant? How to present this information in a way that all can access? Which are the information needs of Human Resources managers and other managers involved in inclusion‟s process? Iteration with the subjects proved to be crucial for the establishment of the initial requirements of SolAssist virtual library, that aims to facilitate the dissemination of relevant information to managers, through socialization of assistive technologies, adaptations or solutions already in use in production environments. We conclude that there is low presence of assistive technology, adaptations and solutions in the visited companies, because ignorance in this regard is still very large. Therefore, it is expected that the collaborative platform that we have proposed to build will become an affordable and practical consultation instrument for managers, where they can seek information and assist effectively at the labor inclusion processes of people with disabilities.

Abstract (sommario):
In information retrieval there is a problem with ambiguous words. To solve this problem word sense disambiguation WSD is used. Few studies combining information retrieval and word sense disambiguation have been conducted with Swedish words. The purpose of this thesis has been divided in two. The first purpose was to examine Swedish information retrieval and disambiguation in the query phase. The second purpose was to compare the disambiguation between automatic and manual expansion. We chose a number of topics from the GP_HDINF test collection in Query Performance Analyser QPA. The topics we chose had to have more than ten relevant documents so that expansion would be possible. According to the rules of the automatic expansion we were to choose relations in the following order; synonyms, hyponyms, hypernyms. If such relations did not exist the topic was rejected. This left us with 14 topics. We made a baseline query with inflections of the Swedish words. Our baseline query was expanded once automatically using the sense that the Lesk algorithm chose from the Swedish WordNet and once manually by the authors. We compared precision and recall from our baseline with precision and recall from both the automatic and the manual expansions. Our study shows that the Lesk algorithm performs 60 % correct disambiguation and that manual expansion performs better than automatic expansion. The difference between automatic WSD and manual WSD is negligible and we suggest the use of automatic WSD to overcome the problems in IR because it saves the user a lot of time.

Abstract (sommario):
Case study on the Central Library (BC) of Libraries Integrated Nucleus from the Federal University of Maranhão (UFMA/NIB) with the purpose of analyzing the transformation that have occurred in the work of the librarians in face of the implementation of the new information technology SIG- Modules SIPAC and SIGAA in BC of NIB/UFMA. The chosen population for the development of the research was concentrated in 12 (twelve) librarians that develop their activities in the sectors: control service and formation of collection (SCFA), technical processes service (SPT), and bibliographical information service (SIB). The data were collected through interviews and documentary research that subsidized the analysis of the results. The theoretical framework of the study talked about the information technology and its implications on the work processes of the enterprises and libraries; the evolution of the libraries and university libraries and; the work processes in the context of the world of work, work in libraries and the relationship with the information technology. The analysis of the data showed that the work processes of the BC librarians have become as a result of the implementation of this new technology, bringing consequences in the forms of execution of the tasks, leading them to adapt and create new ways for the development of their activities, in order to correspond to the demands generated. Detach that the introduction of the new technologies allowed to the librarians and the manager of the library a greater control over the work and caused even greater accessibility and visibility of library services to the academic community. Propose actions for adequacy of the work processes of the librarians, that converge with the new technologies. It is concluded that the use of the new information technology SIG- Modules SIGAA and SIPAC by NIBUFMA, brought transformation in the work processes of the librarians, affecting the daily practices, mainly because these professionals were already trained and accustomed to acting with the previous technology that used some manual routines combined with mechanical technologies.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
Helping professionals help people to achieve optimal functionality and fulfillment in the physical, psychological, emotional and intellectual domains. Well-defined ethical standards for practitioners are crucial to such a vital endeavor. This study analyzes the official codes of ethics produced by the professional organizations of five of the helping professions: librarianship, psychology, social work, nursing, and education. In the ethics codes is sought interpretation of four moral principles—respect for autonomy, justice, beneficence, and non-maleficence—and four professional responsibilities—fidelity, veracity, privacy, and confidentiality. These are grounded, respectively, in the “common morality” or the core norms exercised by all morally serious people, and the “professional morality,” or the core norms exercised by all moral professionals. How do the professions define, interpret, and express the principles and responsibilities? This interdisciplinary study clarifies and allows comparison of the expressed values of each profession. It is a critical examination of professional codes of ethics, and an argument for their explicit grounding in a larger morality.

Abstract (sommario):
This study explores how the social tags are employed by users of LibraryThing, a popular web 2.0 social networking site for cataloging books, to describe works on Asian women in representing themes within the context of intersectionality. Background literature in the domain of subject description of works has focused on race and gender representation within traditional controlled vocabularies such as the Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH). This study explores themes related to intersectionality in order to analyze how users construct meaning in their social tags. The collection of works used to search for social tags came from the Association of College and Research Libraries’ list on East Asian, South and Southeast Asian, and Middle Eastern women. A pilot study was conducted comprising of a limited sample in each of the three domains, which helped generate a framework of analysis that was used in application for the larger sample of works on Asian women. The full study analyzed 1231 social tags collected from 122 works on Asian women. Findings from this study showed that users construct a variety of intersections relating to gender and ethnicity for works on Asian women. Overall findings from this showed that gender and gender-related constructs were the most common subject of tags employed for works on Asian women. Users more often referred to geography rather than ethnicity when describing the materials on Asian women. Interesting themes to emerge involved how gender and other constructs differed among the three domains. Tags describing the majority of East Asia, such as Chinese and Japanese were most common in the East Asian dataset. Countries not considered the “majority” in South and Southeast Asia were often used, such as Indonesia and the Philippines. Themes of sexuality and religion were much more prevalent in the Middle Eastern set of tags. Social tags act as a mechanism for social commentary. Researchers have access to a plethora of constructions available to them through these social tags; such abundance of information is a valuable resource to understanding how the general populace understands intersections and constructs identity.

Abstract (sommario):
To talk about Environmental Education to pre-school education students through the reading and exploitation of children stories happens frequently and it is very important to the pedagogical practice and thus leading to a big progress in the quality of education. Nowadays school libraries have great influence on the development of the pleasure and the habit of reading and attending a library. A school library is also an important tool of collaboration and it promotes processes that were built and experienced during the educational practice. In this perspective, we can see with this work the investigative progress developed with a group of children from a kindergarten. The study was led according to the Curricular Orientation to a Pre-school Education, the School Curricular Project and Curricular Structure to a Pre-school Education and with the Educative Project in conjunction with the Annual Plan of Activities. With this research I tried to know the children’s perceptions towards the environment and an environmental awareness through a group of activities carried out from children’s books. I tried to understand if they reflect the activities performed by the children. Also sought to identify lines of intersection between the entertaining and pedagogical goals of Literature to Children and his pedagogical virtues, specifically with regard to ecological literacy.
