Testo completoBrazilian telenovelas have always been very popular in Portugal but in the last years this popularity is decreasing. It seems Portuguese audiences prefer Portuguese telenovelas instead. Why is this so? Within the context of the relationship between Portugal and Brazil, Portuguese identity and theories of cultural exchange and cultural appropriation, this essay, through interviews to ten different subjects, tries to analyse why this is happening.

Testo completoCan a two-century old local tradition survive the globalization of leisure and recreation? When it comes to bull racing, studying the audience/spectators is important. Extensive bull-breeding, which is one of the main industries in Camargue, is not really profitable and cannot survive by breeding bulls for racing alone. The common assumption is that the spectators of Camargue bull races tend to be rather old rural folks. If this is really the case, the future of bull racing and the ecological balance of the territory depend on audience renewal of taurine culture. Little known outside Provence and Languedoc, taurine events remain quite popular in Camargue and surrounding areas. Why is the interest of locals for these so-called “traditions” so keen? As we started interviewing aficionados for this research we were able to outline a social field (Bourdieu, 1992) for Camargue bull racing. This thesis, pertaining to Information and Communication sciences, focuses on the field of Camargue bull racing. This field is fairly autonomous, yet relies on the social, economic and political context. It belongs to a universe of conflicting interests and power struggles between social actors. A quantitative survey compiled from 626 questionnaires provides a first outline of the audiences of Camargue bull racing. Several transmission mechanisms have been identified. Intergenerational transmission is complemented by an integration mechanism that transcends the field’s borders. Aficionados act as mediators for first-time spectators and the feeling of belonging to the “bouvine” community strengthens the field

Greer, Aaron Andrew. "Imagined Futures: Interpretation, Imagination, and Discipline in Hindu Trinidad". Thesis, University of Oregon, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/1794/11995.
Testo completoGlobalization has inaugurated many rapid changes in local communities throughout the world. The globalization of media, both electronic and print, has introduced new pressures for local communities to confront while also opening up new imaginative possibilities. As many observers have noted, transnational media transform local public cultures, or shared imaginative spaces, but never in predictable, totally hegemonic ways. This dissertation focuses on the efforts of a small Hindu community called the Hindu Prachar Kendra located in Trinidad, West Indies, as they develop critical strategies that help their children read, negotiate, and in some cases contribute to local and global public cultures. I argue that though many Hindu parents and teachers of the Kendra share anxieties about the effects of local and global popular cultures on their children, they also use many features, ideas, and texts emerging from imaginative media in creative ways. Furthermore, their concerns about media shape their interpretation and instruction of Hindu practice.

Testo completoThe purpose of this dissertation is to propose a theoretical model for the subgenre of testimonials of social empowerment. With the concept of empowerment as groundwork, the model develops a textual approach framed in a psychosocial structure. I argue that testimonials may be described as examples of Jürgen Habermas’s communicative action. As speech acts aimed at reaching understanding, testimonials capitalize both on the binding and bonding aspects of illocutionary force in the hope to secure with their audience an ongoing dialogue over issues of social justice. The volumes, as unofficial public spheres, mobilize the normative and practical dynamics at work in social movements. These dynamics express as two narrative guiding threads: an aesthetic based on impact, and an ethics based on responsibility. The texts’ aesthetic develops a form of perlocutionary realism instantiating a sense of authenticity and sincerity embodied in the narrators’ voices. The resulting impact is coupled to moral concerns based on a polysemic understanding of social responsibility, on which narrators seek to build their narratives’ ethical potential. A series of case studies allowed to demonstrate that both narrative threads are realized as an appropriation of four paradigmatic forms of rhetorical ethos, each based on a specific realm of the social world: intimacy, justice, spirituality and activism.

Testo completoThere is a lot of questions about the construction of elites, in particular about the challenges of cultural and educational democratization. An elite emerging from people can appear only when the society is opened enough, so that the human beings are not dependent from their social conditions of origin. According to the popular education movements such as People and Culture, the creation of an elite is the consequence of an active educational method based on a pooling of culture and the use of free time. This creation is necessary to avoid alienation and masses manipulation. At the end of the eighties, the model regarding the construction of a popular elite changed. Giving a social ascension to the popular layers has become a political need and a social demand. The thematic of equal opportunities is privileged. Positive discrimination programs are established. Supporting the young people coming from sensitive areas through academic success is a priority for the social promotion of human beings. We can ask ourselves about the composition of these elites, which appeared in the process of social transformation and on what they represent. Can we define popular education and equal opportunities as theoretical models for the inscription in the representations and social body of elites coming from all the social layers?

Testo completoThe purpose of this master’s thesis is to examine how femininity, Silikon, Vecko Revyn, and Darling. The study is made from a critical discourse analytical approach and text, pictures, and layout are all analysed. Some of the main characteristics of the material are the division in the categories"we"and"them", double messages, and personal address to the reader. Femininity is strongly associated with body, sexuality, beauty, and looks. A common representation is beauty defined by the features: thin, young, and fair skin. The most distinguished difference is the way differences between women and men are represented in the magazines.

Testo completoThe cocoa produced in Fiji is exported to industrialized countries for processing of the raw material. The Swedish organization Cocoa Bello is involved in a project to provide the Fijian cocoa farmers with knowledge as well as resources to enable local processing and to attain added value of the cocoa crop. The purpose of this study is to discover a field of application for the Fijian cocoa among the rural population, using an ethnographic design. We spent one week in Namau Settlement, Fiji, where we applied in-depth interviews and participant obser-vations in six families. We found a number of aspects affecting food choices, such as social, economical and cultural beliefs. The participants were to a great extent self-sufficient in food and because of the farm work they valued food rich in energy, especially the starchy plants grown on the farm. The crops grown on the farm are considered to be the real food. Hence it is important that the Fijian chocolate get the identity of the farm. The cocoa is among other things likely to be used in a beverage. Since the technology is limited, the Fijian cocoa should be underlined as being different from the commercial varieties of cocoa and chocolate, bring-ing out the properties unique to the local chocolate, such as the high content of nutrients and energy.
