This dissertation traces the formation, development, and deployment of arguments in favor of maternal employment from the years before World War II through the mid-1990s. Drawing on academic journals, popular periodicals, government documents, feminist writings, and the personal papers of researchers, policy makers, and activists, I argue that defenses of maternal employment have taken two main forms: economic and psychosocial. Although both types appeared throughout this period, the relative influence of each waxed and waned. As a result of the legacy of depression and war mobilization, economic arguments predominated in the immediate postwar years. After a decade of sustained national growth and the rising influence of psychology and sociology, however, arguments that stressed the psychological and social benefits of working mothers became increasingly prominent. The trend reversed again in the 1970s as the economy stagnated and hostility toward the welfare state mounted. The content of these two types of arguments also changed over time. Defenses of maternal employment that were rooted in and justified by the concept of shared national good in postwar America were reframed, by the 1990s, in terms of the economic self-interest of individual taxpayers and employers. During the 1940s and 1950s, proponents of maternal employment suggested that it helped expand the middle class and foster children’s independence. Feminists in the early 1960s drew on these claims to challenge hostility toward mothers in the labor force. By the early 1970s, they hoped that working mothers, by undermining traditional sex role socialization, would help remake, rather than preserve, society. At the same time, a new set of economic claims about working mothers, based in free market economic thought, began to gain strength. Politicians attacked welfare policies that enabled poor mothers to be full-time homemakers, while some feminists tried to persuade corporations that they had financial, rather than moral, incentives for hiring and retaining mothers. The vision of the broader social good that had characterized earlier arguments for maternal employment was gone. This helps explain why, even as rates of maternal employment skyrocketed, national work/family policies in the United States have remained the weakest in the developed world.<br>History

The modern American agricultural fair, an annual harvest-time celebration at which livestock, produce, and handicrafts are exhibited for premiums, originated as an innovative response to conditions in rural New England at the time of the War of 1812. This study explains the birth of the institution by scrutinizing the motives and methods of its founders. In particular, it traces the intellectual journey from Puritan youth to Jeffersonian promoter of Plymouth, Massachusetts, native Elkanah Watson (1758--1842), its chief publicist. This dissertation also examines the specific social, economic, and political forces that shaped Pittsfield, Massachusetts---to which he retired from a mercantile career in Albany, New York, in 1807---leading to the formation of the Berkshire County Agricultural Society in 1811, which organized America's first successful county fairs. Inspired by a vision of a United States no longer dependent on Great Britain for its cloth, Watson and the new local elite---professional men and capitalist entrepreneurs---imported fine-fleeced Spanish Merino sheep and established the first woolen factories in Pittsfield. their new type of agricultural society would hold annual fairs for farm families to promote both, as well as to introduce agricultural improvements in general. In addition to being a popular institution of agricultural education, the fair was one of self-improvement. Answering deep needs of the rural community, it aimed to replace undisciplined folkways with secular ritual, healthy competition, rational amusements, and innocent recreations. The origins of the agricultural fair can best be understood in its synergistic relationship with the new forces sweeping the country in the era of the early American republic: the capitalist transformation of the countryside, the early development of American manufactures, the democratization of American society and politics, the secularization of moral reform, the rise of voluntary associations, the heightened significance of the social sphere (especially for women), and the growing importance of public festivity. The fair assumed today's form, with spectacles, sports, and Midway entertainments competing with agricultural exhibitions, only after railroads came to towns like Pittsfield around the mid-nineteenth century, intensifying the pace of socioeconomic change and bringing many more nonagricultural participants to the fairs.

The practice of gleaning began as a way for the poor to provide sustenance for themselves and their families. Changes in societal ideas about private property as well as a shift toward a neoliberal style of governance have caused gleaning to become what it is today: a practice primarily undertaken by charitable organizations, nonprofits, and church groups who then donate their bounty to local food banks, providing fresh produce to the food insecure. In modern society, gleaning is often held up as a single solution to the problems of food insecurity, poor nutrition, and food waste. This thesis complicates that discourse by analyzing the websites of five different San Francisco Bay Area gleaning groups to investigate how they present themselves as fitting into the larger conversation surrounding food charity, health, and food waste. This thesis uses qualitative and quantitative textual analysis to show how the language used on each organization’s website illustrates the organization’s relationship with those three values. Each organization presents itself as fitting into contemporary food recovery discourse in a different way: one focuses primarily on community building; one is looking to expand its model as far as possible; one seeks to be a solution to poor nutrition, food insecurity, and food waste in its community; one provides myriad resources to anyone looking; and one actively embraces the food insecure. The differences among these organizations show the one-dimensionality of the current discourse surrounding gleaning as a single solution to food insecurity, poor nutrition, and food waste. While gleaning can, and does, have value, its focus on the individual’s role in solving food insecurity, poor nutrition, and food waste, as well as its inability to provide long-term solutions, complicates its role in contemporary food recovery.

Ce travail est divisé en deux grandes parties. La première explore la notion d’événement dans une perspective multidisciplinaire, à partir de l’histoire, la sociologie, l’ethnologie, la philosophie, la communication et la linguistique. Le but de ce parcours notionnel est double :tout d’abord, illustrer comment les sciences humaines évoluent (depuis les années 1950) vers une approche langagière de l’événement, et en deuxième lieu, nous doter des outils conceptuels nécessaires pour montrer que l’événement médiatique est une construction sociale dans laquelle le langage joue un rôle central. Cette construction est régulée par des routines de rédaction journalistiques, des contraintes matérielles (i. e. l’espace disponible pour rédiger des titres), des représentations et des habitus de lecture. En amont de la nomination par le média, des protocoles sociaux implicites règlent ainsi la mise en mots de l’événement. Cela explique l’énorme consensus dans la nomination d’événements à l’intérieur d’un même espace historico-géographique. <p>La réflexion théorique sur l’événement a également permis d’observer le fonctionnement singulier du discours d’information, notamment en regard du discours historique, tout spécialement à partir de leur saisie particulière du temps, à savoir, les temps courts des médias et les temps long ou mi-longs de l’histoire. Cette forme d’appréhender le temps n’est pas sans conséquences sur les modes de nomination des médias, car ils ont besoin de nommer toute occurrence jugée événementielle, souvent sans le recul nécessaire pour les intégrer dans un récit global. La pratique conduit en effet le discours de l’information à produire une grande quantité de désignants qui pourront être mémorisés par les lecteurs sans pour autant produire de véritables connaissances. Malgré cette hypertrophie, l’événement médiatique constitue un repère collectif primordial pour organiser le vécu public. En ce sens, il est à distinguer du fait divers, qui n’organise pas le temps social mais produit, au contraire, des discours répétitifs, ancrés sur des archétypes et non sur l’actualité. Dans sa fonction cathartique, le fait divers présente une mise en récit du dysfonctionnement de la société et, dans sa répétitivité, n’a pas besoin d’être mémorisé par le discours social. Comme corollaire, il produit moins de dénominations et plus de séquences narrativisées. Ainsi, un fait divers peut accéder au statut d’événement en fonction de la place que le discours d’information −et la société− lui accorde, à la fois dans l’espace public et dans la matérialité du support écrit. <p>En tant que construction sociale, l’événement médiatique n’est pas un objet discret. Non seulement il n’est pas disponible tel quel avant l’acte de nomination, mais il n’est pas immédiatement disponible et perceptible. Comme d’autres réalités sociales ou institutionnelles, les événements ont une « ontologie subjective » mais sont perçus comme objectifs. Dans ce cadre, l’instance de médiatisation est fondamentale pour donner corps à l’événement et l’ériger en objet d’intérêt public. La question qui se pose est celle de la mise en forme de l’événement en consensus avec le corps social. Si nous considérons les événements comme des faits institutionnels, il devient évident que leur mode de donation est médiatisé par le biais d’une instance socialement légitimée à laquelle on accorde cette mission :les médias. Le mécanisme de médiation qui intervient ici est la déférence :nous déférons aux journalistes la tâche d’identifier, de décrire et de nommer les événements publics. <p>L’analyse des désignants d’événements dans une perspective linguistique (sémantique et syntaxique) s’avère ainsi fondamentale pour interroger les représentations mobilisées par le média. En effet, ces séquences linguistiques, largement partagées par le corps social, sont des prêts-à-dire capables de condenser une énorme quantité d’information sur l’événement, de ses données les plus objectives (où, quand, quoi) aux plus subjectives (images, représentations) mais partagées intersubjectivement. La deuxième partie de cette thèse aborde la description de ces séquences linguistiques, dans une démarche qui va de la sémantique lexicale à la sémantique discursive. Les désignants d’événements sont envisagés sous leur forme expansée, c’est-à-dire comme des expressions définies formées à partir d’un nom événementiel, nom qui dénote un événement en langue (attentat, catastrophe, crise, etc.). Cette base lexicale sert à catégoriser l’événement −en fonction de cadres cognitifs communs−, orientant le sens et affectant les représentations des lecteurs. <p>Parmi les différentes formes, nous distinguons des expressions définies complètes (la guerre en Irak, le massacre de la place Tiananmen, les attentats du 11 septembre, l’affaire du voile) et incomplètes (la crise, la canicule, le tsunami). Ces dernières se caractérisent par la présence d’un opérateur indexical qui fait référence au moment de l’énonciation et ont donc une capacité plus faible à stocker la mémoire de l’événement. Une fois le moment discursif passé, ces expressions ont tendance à être complétées par un complément (i. e. la canicule de 2003). Les expressions définies complètes présentent, elles, une tendance à la condensation. Elles produisent ainsi des mots-événements :des toponymes et des dates en fonction événementielle (que nous appelons héméronymes), ainsi que des désignants occasionnels (Tiananmen, le 11 septembre, le voile, respectivement). Malgré l’effacement du nom événementiel présent dans la dénomination originelle (massacre, attentat, affaire), celui-ci est pour ainsi dire enregistré par l’expression restante, et sert par là à orienter le sens de l’expression. La preuve qu’un sens notionnel a été enregistré par ces expressions est qu’elles peuvent être réutilisées dans des emplois métaphoriques, pour des événements de même nature (le 11 septembre de l’Europe, un Tiananmen à l’iranienne, tsunami financier). L’approche discursive permet également de distinguer des dénominations et des désignations, moins figées et à plus forte valeur axiologique, mais qui contribuent également à la construction de l’événement. Si Mai 68 peut être catégorisé comme une révolte, une révolution ou un mouvement par la presse et par les principaux acteurs sociaux, il peut également être qualifié de coup d’épée dans l’eau ou de rupture culturelle. Les premières constituent des séquences largement partagées dont le but est de catégoriser, mémoriser et retracer l’événement, tandis que les secondes expriment surtout le point de vue d’un énonciateur ou groupe, et ont par là un contenu axiologique plus évident. <p>Nous essayons de montrer que la description linguistique est une condition nécessaire pour décrire la capacité mémorielle de ces désignants, qui ont des degrés de stabilité et de figement différents. L’établissement des différentes catégories (expressions définies complètes et incomplètes, xénismes, mots-événements accidentels, toponymes événementiels et héméronymes) permet d’étudier leur capacité mémorielle en fonction de leur morphologie. En effet, moins le désignant a de contenu lexical, plus il a de facilité à circuler dans des contextes qui ne sont pas celui d’origine. Ainsi, les toponymes et les héméronymes ont une plus grande capacité d’évocation, en raison de leur proximité avec le nom propre. Situated in environmental history and ecocriticism, this thesis traces the emergence of modern Japanese literature at the beginning of the twentieth century. Using agential realism and its concepts ‘diffraction’ and ‘becoming’, this thesis conducts an anti-essential ecocritical analysis. It aims to overcome recurring dualisms in literary analyses and to trace negotiations of concepts such as ‘nature’ and ‘self’ in modern Japanese literature. The thesis scrutinises ‘diffractions’ between the subject and the object in novels and through very acts of producing novels. These ‘diffractions’ are analysed in relation to ‘becomings’ of the concept ‘nature’ as well as ‘literature’ in the context of Japanese modernisation. Based on diverse struggles in ‘becomings’ in modern literary history, the thesis concludes with questioning the cliché of Japanese culture (the lack of absolute ‘self’ and ‘love of nature’) and also comments on analyses of ‘diffractions’ as a viable method for ecocritical analyses or the ‘ecologisation’ of literary analyses.

The Mexican Herald, an English language newspaper in Mexico City during the authoritative rule of Porfirio Díaz (1895-1910), sought to introduce a vision of Mexico's development that would influence how Mexicans conceived of their country's political and cultural place within a community that transcended national boundaries. As Mexicans experienced rapid modernization led partially by foreign investors, the Herald represented the imaginings of its editors and their efforts to influence how Mexicans conceptualized their national identity and place in the world. The newspaper's editors idealized a Mexico that would follow the international model of the United States and embrace Pan-Americanism. The Herald's depictions of the ideal, future city provided an intelligible landscape to modernity. The editors' vision of modernity had significant implications for Mexican culture. The newspaper's articles and illustrations defined the parameters of modernity providing clear depictions of the physical, political, and cultural aspects of the community of modern nations.

This thesis analyzes medical manuals published in England between 1500 and 1770 to trace developing medical understandings and prescriptive approaches to conception, pregnancy, and childbirth. While there have been plenty of books written regarding social and religious changes in the reproductive process during the early modern era, there is a dearth of scholarly work focusing on the medical changes which took place in obstetrics over this period. Early modern England was a time of great change in the field of obstetrics as physicians incorporated newly-discovered knowledge about the male and female body, new fields and tools, and new or revived methods into published obstetrical manuals. As men became more prominent in the birthing chamber, instructions in the manuals began to address these men as well. Overall these changes were brought about by changes in the medical field along with changes in culture and religion and the emergence of print culture and rising literacy rates.

Many patent law dilemmas arise from a failure to understand technologies as embedded in broader social, economic and political realities and to contextually analyze these legal phenomena. This narrowness leads to poor legal development, of which the modern medical exception from patentability is one example. Judges have difficulty interpreting it, patentees do not understand its purpose and it does not protect the important medical technologies to which the public would like access. This thesis applies a legal pluralist analysis to examine the emergence of the medical methods exception in order to understand why it was created and legislated. It starts by examining the origins of the exception in the caselaw, and the informal, concurrent norm established by the emerging medical profession in the early 20th century. It then proceeds to examine why the medical profession might have sought and enforced a norm prohibiting its members from patenting, and concludes that this arose from the need of the medical profession to distance itself from the patent law. As a result, professionalizing physicians established an internal normative order that mimicked and in many cases replaced the effect of the formal law. The thesis then proceeds to examine how the form of the informal norm evolved in the period between WWI and WWII, finding that the profession’s norm transformed and broke down concurrently with its efforts to achieve external legitimacy through legislation. That breakdown arose from factors which included growing labour mobility, greater understanding of the benefits of patents, and a growing role of science and industry in medicine that threatened the profession’s access to valuable medical innovation. The thesis concludes with a study of a current case (Myriad Genetics) that applies the thesis’ theoretical framework to a present dispute over the role the law should play in regulating genetic diagnostic tests.

xiv, 234 p. : ill.<br>The twentieth-century project of American rhetorician Kenneth Burke, grounded in a magic-based theory of language, reveals a path to the origins of what I am going to call occult invention. The occult, which I define as a symbol set of natural terms derived from supernatural terms, employs a method of heuresis based on a metaphor-like process I call analogic extension. Traditional invention fell from use shortly after the Liberal Arts reforms of Peter Ramus, around 1550. Occult invention emerged nearly simultaneously, when Early Modern British authors began using occult symbols as tropes in what I refer to as the Occult Mode. I use six of these authors--George Chapman, William Shakespeare, John Donne, Abraham Cowley, John Dryden, and Jonathan Swift--as examples of how occult invention arises. In appropriating occult symbolism, authors in the Occult Mode began using the invention methods of the occult arts of magic, alchemy, astrology, and cabala to derive new meanings, transform language, develop characters and plots, and reorient social perspectives. As we learn in tracking Burke's project, occult invention combines the principles of Aristotle's rhetoric and metaphysics with the techniques and principles of the occult arts. Occult invention fell from use around the end of the eighteenth century, but its rhetorical influence reemerged through the work of Burke. Contemporary scholars seeking to increase Tuber Melanosporum truffle production rely almost exclusively on technological advancements to increase yields, while failing to place the cultivation of truffles, trufficulture, in its historical or local landscape contexts. In this dissertation, I describe how truffle scholars’ conceptualization of trufficulture and landscapes has changed over 150 years in France, while focusing on the French département of Lot. I examine changing relations between humans and nonhumans and how they impact truffle harvests. I analyzed the history of French trufficulture through a close reading of historic truffle manuals, archival research and the classification of remotely sensed images. Shifting from the past to the present, from July 2014-August 2016, I conducted semi-structured survey interviews with working truffle-growers (trufficulteurs) and participant observation at meetings of trufficulteurs, truffle hunts and truffle markets. I utilize actor-network theory (ANT) as both a theory and methodology. Actor-network theory allowed me to follow the impacts made by both humans and nonhumans on trufficulture. I found that truffle harvests in the 1880s dropped by 90%. Highly populated, intensively worked landscapes of viticulture, silvopastoralism and cereal cultivation created conditions suitable to truffles. By the 1870s the phylloxera aphid ravaged grapevines, which made trufficulture an important source of revenue. These advantageous conditions would not last. Post-WWI, yields fell for decades because of an ongoing rural population exodus and consequent agricultural abandonment, which promoted reforestation and closed canopy forests in Lot, France. By the 1960s, French trufficulteurs organized associations to share knowledge and promote local truffle markets to revive production. Trufficulteurs’ utilization of tractors, ‘inoculated’ plants and irrigation systems produced a new form of “modern” trufficulture. State subsidies helped trufficulteurs adopt “modern” practices, in hopes of increasing yields. “Modern” trufficulture has not dramatically increased yields. A few highly-capitalized trufficulteurs dominate production in Lot. Many others practice trufficulture as a hobby. Instead of relying on “modern” technological fixes, my findings suggest that trufficulteurs, farmers and states should reinvigorate extensive polyculture farming practices that maintain open canopy forests, which were beneficial to trufficulture in the past. Actor-network theory allowed me to rethink human and nonhuman relations, and to propose alternatives to “modern” trufficulture.

In this thesis two &ldquo<br>western modern state&rdquo<br>and three Ottoman &ldquo<br>state tradition&rdquo<br>scholars (Gianfranco Poggi, Christopher Pierson, Serif Mardin, Metin Heper and Ç<br>aglar Keyder) are elaborated in the way how they write the the history for their theorization attempts. The specially emphasized processes in these histories are asserted to be reconstructed as the sources of an &ldquo<br>idealized&rdquo<br>-type that is assumed to be fulfilled by &ldquo<br>the West&rdquo<br>and should also be followed by &ldquo<br>the rest&rdquo<br>. The description of this form of a state entails a covert expectation on the requirement of an effective, limited but primarily strong state. Since the mainstream historical knowledge builds the foundations of both our academic studies and daily political arguments, it should be subjected to a critique. And state theory should be rethought with comparative and alternative perspectives.
This work does not only trace the histories of political development constituted on &ldquo<br>modernization revisionist&rdquo<br>and &ldquo<br>state traditional&rdquo<br>theses, it also aims to cast new perspectives for the theorization of state-formation momentums and mechanisms by making a potpourri from some alternative readings of historical theses. As a result some central debates are brought into the picture on the historical transformation of state-society relationships. This thesis explores the hitherto undocumented disestablishment and reconstruction of the Anglican Church of Ireland, c.1868-1870, and argues that this experience was formative in the emergence of Home Rule. Structurally, the Church’s General Synod served as a model for an autonomous Irish parliament. Moreover, disestablishment and reconstruction conditioned the political trajectories of the Protestants initially involved in the first group to campaign for a federal Irish parliament, the Home Government Association (HGA). More broadly, both the HGA and the governance of the independent Church—the General Synod—grew from the bedrock of the same associational culture. The HGA was more aligned with the public associations of Protestant-dominated Dublin intellectual life and the lay associational culture of the Church. Although the political vision advocated was different from the normal conservatism of many of its Protestant members, culturally it was entirely grounded in the recent Anglican experience.

This thesis explores how burglars and burglary in London were understood in cultural, criminological, legal, political, and economic discourse during the period 1860-1939, demonstrating how the ideas about crime and the criminal circulating in these domains were mutually constitutive. Specifically, it identifies how characterisations of burglary in visual and written forms of media — encompassing legal and criminological documents, as well as those produced by the press and commercial advertising, and in fiction, theatre, and film — cultivated a range of attitudes towards the crime to a greater or lesser extent. Encompassing not only fear-mongering and sympathetic representations, but also those designed to be exciting, to challenge preconceptions, and to entertain, I argue that these conflicting attitudes towards burglary and burglars emerged in response to specific changes in the cultural landscape: the advent of mass literacy and corresponding interest in narratives of crime that reflected the social, cultural, and political concerns of an audience diverse of class, age, and gender; the commercial imperatives of the insurance and entertainment industries as the middle classes expanded, including the development of household insurance and the popularity of the ‘true crime’ genre; debates surrounding women’s increasing social and sexual agency and their alignment with particular crimes; and the evolution of new modes of policing and regulation. The thesis thereby uses the topic of burglary to illuminate a broader range of contemporary preoccupations and experiences with gender relations, class structures and stereotypes, and the moral authority of state and society. By approaching burglary as a focus of interactions not only between police, criminal, and victim, but also between the market, consumers, and the state, this thesis uncovers new terrain upon which crime intersected with everyday lives historically.

L'évolution de la situation politique d'un pays, dont le changement de son système politique, les transformations économiques, les nouveaux repères dans la politique nationale et sociale, produisent un effet notable sur la fonction sociale de la langue et sur ses composantes. Les événements historiques du XXe siècle ont eu une influence capitale sur l'histoire de la langue azerbaïdjanaise. C'est au cours de cette période que la langue azerbaïdjanaise a le plus évolué ce qui n'est sans poser certains problèmes. Certes, le système de la langue n'a pas intégralement changé au cours du siècle dernier mais certaines transformations, comme l'alphabet, le vocabulaire, la dynamique du fonctionnement social de la langue peuvent toutefois être constatées. L'entrée de l'Azerbaïdjan dans la phase moderne de son développement liée à l'intense modernisation du pays a engendré la formation d'une identité nationale propre. Pour ce fait, les problématiques linguistiques et culturelles ont joué un rôle majeur. A l'étape des combats ouverts pour les idéaux politiques a précédé la maîtrise du problème culturel et linguistique, car ils étaient plus abordables par la population que des concepts politiques difficiles.

L'Aprenentatge Integrat de Continguts i Llengua Estrangera (AICLE) és un tòpic d'investigació d'avantguarda, des de l’aparició als 90, amb l'objectiu de fomentar el multilingüisme europeu. Per ampliar l'exposició de l’alumnat a la LE, caldria implementar-lo, a les escoles secundàries, principalment amb professorat d'assignatures no lingüístiques, sols o en equip amb professorat de LE. L’assignatura d’Història ofereix moltes possibilitats per a l'adopció d'AICLE, millorat amb TIC segons la literatura, de manera que aquest és el tema més abordat dins de les implementacions europees de AICLE, encara que no estan tan esteses com es desitja. De fet, la pròpia definició d’AICLE, àdhuc quan només es lliga amb el multilingüisme, no és clara, per la seva òbvia complexitat, ni atractiva per als professors disciplinaris, perquè no se centra en els resultats de la seva àrea. En aquest context, aquesta tesi, amb revisions sistemàtiques de la literatura, defineix a AICLE pedagògicament com un entorn obert i significatiu per a l'ensenyament i l'aprenentatge participatius, facilitador del canvi educatiu general; i després s'enfoca la formació de professors en AICLE, per detectar mancances i bones pràctiques, destacar suggeriments i avantatges relacionats amb aquestes mancances. La part teòrica es conclou revisant la literatura sobre CLIL relacionada amb pedagogies, enfocaments lingüístics i metodologies integrades, amb la finalitat de respondre a les mancances en aquest camp per a la formació, i evidenciant, per a això, la importància de l'adopció de les TIC. De hecho, la propia definición de AICLE, incluso abordada en exclusiva desde una perspectiva ligada al multilingüismo, no es clara ni resulta atractiva para los profesores disciplinares, porque no se centra en los resultados de su área. En estas coordenadas, esta tesis define a AICLE desde el punto de vista pedagógico como un entorno abierto y significativo para la enseñanza y el aprendizaje participativos, que propicia el cambio educativo general; y luego se enfoca en el entrenamiento de profesores de AICLE, para detectar carencias y buenas prácticas, en particular de las partes interesadas, con el fin de resaltar sugerencias y ventajas en relación con esas carencias. La parte teórica se concluye por medio de la revisión de la literatura sobre CLIL en relación con pedagogías, enfoques lingüísticos y metodologías integradas, para responder a las carencias en este campo para la formación, y evidenciando, para ello, la importancia de la adopción de las TIC. Finalmente, después de una investigación-acción participativa crítica que ha involucrado a tres escuelas en Italia, se ofrecen dos modelos para implementaciones de Historia a través de AICLE y TIC para profesores individuales y en equipo docente, una tabla de observación, y el plan de lección correspondiente.<br>Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) is a cutting-edge topic of research, since its comparison in the ‘90s, with the aim to foster European multilingualism. In order to widen FLs’ exposure of students, it should be implemented, in Secondary schools, mainly by non-linguistic subject teachers, alone or in team with FLs colleagues. History offers many affordances for the adoption of CLIL, which the literature shows enhanced by ICTs, so this is the most involved subject within European CLIL implementations, although these are not as widespread as wished. Indeed, the same definition of CLIL, whether related only to multilingualism, is neither clear, because of its recognised complexity, nor appealing for disciplinary teachers, because it is not focused on the results of its education. Consequently, this thesis, through systematic literature reviews, defines CLIL pedagogically, as an open and meaningful environment for participatory teaching and learning, able to change the mainstream schooling, then focuses on CLIL teacher training, so as to detect lacks and good practices, in particular from the stakeholders, in order to highlight suggestions and their related advantages in filling those lacks. The theoretical part is concluded by reviewing the literature about CLIL related to pedagogies, linguistic approaches and integrated methodologies, so as to answer to lacks in this field for training, and evidencing the importance of the adoption of ICT for it. Finally, after a critical participatory action-research involving three schools in Italy, two models for History implementations by means of CLIL and ICTs have been built, including two general design of them for single teachers or in teaching team, a grid for observation, useful for their implementations as well, and the related lesson plan.

Cette étude s’attache à comprendre ce qu’est un habitat seigneurial secondaire en Hainaut à la fin du Moyen Age et aux Temps Modernes. La disparition de la plupart des résidences de la haute noblesse en Hainaut, nous a amenée à nous pencher sur l’étude des habitats de la petite noblesse, dont le manque de reconnaissance, entrainant la démolition ou les transformations irréversibles de ces habitats, rend ces édifices sujets à l’oubli. Ajoutons à cela que, victimes d’une tradition castrale héritée du 19e siècle, archéologues et historiens de l’art ont bien souvent eu leur attention d’abord attirée par les grands châteaux et donc la haute noblesse, laissant de côté toute une tranche de la population noble et de leurs possessions. Notre étude a comme objectif majeur de comprendre comment ces habitats ont fonctionné comme structures de vie, mais aussi comme des architectures à travers lesquelles et par lesquelles les habitants pouvaient exprimer leurs identités. Dans cette optique, après avoir considéré les différents types architecturaux (types de plans, types de corps de logis, types de tours), suivant une typo-chronologie, nous considérons les matériaux utilisés et la distribution intérieure de ces édifices. <p>Ce sont ensuite les entourages de l’habitat en tant qu’espace construit, leur situation dans le paysage, et par rapport au relief, à l’hydrographie, aux villages, aux terres de cultures, et aux réseaux de communication, qui occupent une grande partie de l’étude. Les liens avec leurs habitants, ces membres de la « petite noblesse » sont ensuite considérés. Leurs fonctions, leurs origines et leurs zones de déplacements sont abordés, afin de mieux percevoir le rôle et la détermination de ce groupe social, qui s’avère être en rupture avec la haute noblesse. L’opposition traditionnelle entre villes et campagnes est dépassée, de même que la question des maisons principales et secondaires, au profit d’une approche plus fluide, favorisant une interaction entre villes et campagnes, et considérant les mouvements de population émergeant de l’un ou l’autre milieu. <p>La partie interprétative suit ensuite, permettant d’aboutir à une caractérisation de ce type d’habitat. Le but est notamment de mettre en lumière la relation entre les aspects défensifs et résidentiels des édifices. Pour ce faire, les éléments de défense active et passive sont examinés, ainsi que le degré d’efficacité de ces structures. <p>La suite de cette partie a pour but de replacer les habitats de la petite noblesse dans le contexte des types architecturaux des campagnes, de la haute noblesse et des villes du Hainaut et des anciens Pays-Bas, afin de mieux dégager les liens ou les ruptures entre les différents groupes sociaux et architecturaux. Les rapports avec les habitats ruraux sont établis en ce qui concerne les diverses composantes que sont les douves, les pont-levis, les orifices de tir, les espaces verts et les aménagements hydrographiques d’agrément, la basse-cour, les tours, les typologies des plans et de maisons, les matériaux et leur qualité de mise en œuvre, les intérieurs, les ouvertures et les styles, les armoiries et les millésimes. La catégorie intermédiaire que sont les habitats des élites rurales, est également abordée, puisqu’elle développe des types architecturaux ambigus et se rapprochant davantage des habitats de la petite noblesse que des autres ruraux. Cette catégorie est examinée d’un point de vue architectural et social./This research is aiming at understanding what is a gentry’s settlement in the County of Hainault at the end of the Middle Ages and during the Modern Times. The disappearance of most of the castles of the high nobility in Hainault, led us to study the gentry’s settlement. The lack of recognition of this kind of building is often leading to their destruction and irreversible transformations. There is also the fact that the archaeologists and art historians often inherited from the 19th century tradition, whose attention was mostly attracted by the main castles and the high nobility, forgetting by the same occasion a side of the nobility –the gentry- and his settlement.<p>The main objective of this research is to understand how these settlements were linked with their inhabitants, expressing their identities, ways of living and behaviours. In this framework, we first analyse the architectural typologies (plans, residential buildings, towers) in connection with the chronology, the materials, and the inner organisation of these buildings.<p>Afterwards, we consider the surroundings of the buildings, the location in the landscape, the relief, hydrography, the village, the lands, the communication net. The lesser nobility is also studied, through its functions, origins, movement areas, in order to have a better understanding of the role and definition of this social group which is distinctly separated from the high nobility. The traditional opposition between cities and countryside, and between the main and secondary housing, is overstepped, in order to reach a more flexible approach. We therefore consider the topic through an interaction between cities and countryside, and their inhabitants.<p>The rest of the research is dedicated to the interpretations, in order to draw the characterists of the gentry’s settlement. First, the relationships between the defensive and residential aspects are considered. The active and passive defensive elements are studied, as well as the efficiency of these structures.<p>Secondly, we replace the gentry’s settlement in the context of the other architectural types of the countryside, high nobility and cities of the county of Hainaut and the Southern Low Countries, in order to have a better understanding of the links and breaks between the different social and architectural groups. The link with the rural settlement is established concerning the following elements :drawbridges, moats, arrow slits, green spaces and water structures, farms, towers, plans and houses typologies, materials and their quality, interiors, openings and styles, coats of arms. The intermediate category of the settlement of the rural elites is also considered, as the architectural types are close to the gentry’s settlement. This category is examined on an architectural and social point of view.<p>The link with the settlement of the cities and the high nobility is also studied, allowing to see a lack of link between the different categories at least until the end of the 17th century. <p>In the last chapters, the gentry’s settlement of Hainault is replaced in the context of the Southern Low Countries, through a comparative approach. We also consider the link with this kind of settlement and the tradition and the modernity, as well as the link with the social status of their inhabitants and builders.<p>The conclusion is the occasion to remind all the characteristics of the gentry’s settlement in Hainault, and the evolution of the architectural types through the centuries. Some comparisons with the same kind of settlement in surroundings countries are also established, opening new research perspectives. In the epilogue, we consider the buildings on a conservation, restoration and preservation point of view. Entre la fin du Moyen Âge et la Révolution, l'histoire de l'abbaye de Saintes, deuxième communauté féminine de France par ses revenus, grand seigneur de sa province, s'avère incontournable tant pour la connaissance des communautés religieuses que celle de la Saintonge. Avoir recours aux actes notariaux et à toutes les sources externes disponibles permet de pallier la destruction des archives du monastère à la Révolution pour en établir une histoire globale.Le pouvoir royal ne parvient à y imposer la nomination des abbesses qu'en 1544, laissant se mettre en place une longue dynastie de supérieures de lignages du Sud-ouest. Après l'échec, en 1511 et 1530, de deux réformes de la communauté imposées par les autorités civiles, suite à une longue préparation dès le XVIe siècle, Françoise II de Foix, réussit durablement à mettre fin à des abus remontant au Moyen Âge. Rapportés par un journal janséniste, les épisodes mystiques extrêmes vécus par les moniales (1777-1787) défraient la chronique. Révélant l'isolement spirituel d'une communauté contemplative à l'époque des Lumières, ils sont riches de sens pour la connaissance de l'existence de pratiques surannées et de l'évolution des mentalités. C'est l'occasion pour l'évêque et la noblesse locale d'un projet de remplacement de l'abbaye par un chapitre de chanoinesses. Si des filles de parlementaires puis de négociants entrèrent à l'abbaye respectivement aux XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles, la vieille noblesse du Centre-ouest domina constamment l'effectif. La prise d'habit doit être située dans le cadre de stratégies familiales et servait à marquer une ascension sociale lignagère. Toute-puissance des abbesses, moniales vivant dans un relatif confort, la lecture tenant une grande place. Faisant preuve de ferveur, l'abbaye reçoit les courants spirituels successifs. A la Renaissance, elle protège des humanistes. Au XVIIe siècle, elle adhère de manière passionnée au jansénisme puis suit la voie du rigorisme avant de choisir une direction jésuite. Le monastère conserve son patrimoine à l'issue de nombreux procès. Il mène une politique de charité limitée eu égard à ses revenus mais s'avérant efficace. S'appuyant sur des receveurs ou des fermiers bien renseignées et ambitieux, il met en valeur efficacement ses biens, développant les brûleries à Oléron et faisant précocement assécher des marais en Poitou au prix de conflits. Les fermiers, souvent des proches des abbesses, connaissent une ascension qui les amènera à occuper les principales fonctions politiques après la Révolution, établissant ainsi une continuité inattendue entre Ancien et Nouveau Régime.

Les récentes révolutions du « Printemps des pays arabes » attestent de la vivacité de l’idéal démocratique. Or ce régime est caractéristique d’une manière philosophique de penser le droit et les institutions. En effet, il se conforme mieux que nul autre à l’essence de l’Homme. Alors, malgré le succès des méthodes quantitatives en sciences humaines et l’autonomie désormais incontestée de la science du politique, nos temps contemporains seraient les héritiers d’une vision métaphysique plutôt que scientifique de la matière politique. Pourtant, la thèse explore l’histoire de la première « science des institutions » qui naît et se développe dans les Temps Modernes. Courant méconnu au cœur de l’histoire des institutions, ses tenants sont pourtant des figures incontournables et emblématiques de la pensée politique moderne, qu’il s’agisse de Machiavel, Hobbes, Montesquieu ou encore Hume. La thèse dévoile alors l’ambitieux projet de ces penseurs : proposer des institutions adaptées à la variété des mœurs, des histoires et des sociétés qu’ils étudient. Le choix du régime politique se doit d’être à la fois respectueux de l’humain et adapté à la variété des populations existantes. Dès lors l’universel et le particulier se rejoignent pour servir la première « science » de la Modernité. La thèse serpente les siècles et le continent européen. Au bout de son périple, une rencontre surprenante : celle de philosophes fascinés par les découvertes de ces premiers scientifiques du politique. De cette rencontre devait naître un nouveau régime politique, différent de son homologue athénien : la Démocratie moderne<br>The recent revolutions of the « Arab Spring » attest of the vivacity of the democratic ideal. Yet, this regime is characterised by a philosophical questioning on law and on institutions. In fact, it fits better than any other regime the essence of mankind. So despite the success of quantitative methods and the now undisputed autonomy of political sciences, modern times inherited a metaphysical point of view rather than a scientific way to address political questioning. However, the thesis explores the history of the first “science of institutions” that was born and developed in Modernity. Unknown current in the history of institutions, its proponents are paradoxically emblematic figures of modern political thinking, such as Machiavelli, Hobbes, Montesquieu or even Hume. The thesis unveils their ambitious project: to propose institutions adapted to the variety of the customs, behaviours, histories of the societies they study. The choice of the political regime should be respectful of human nature and at the same time adapted to the variety of the existing people. Therefore, the universal and the specific merge in order to serve the first real science of the modern era. The thesis research progresses through Europe from the XVIth to the XVIIIth centuries. At the end of its journey: a surprising encounter: the meeting of philosophers fascinated by the discoveries of these first political scientists. This encounter bore a new type of political regime, different from its Athenian counterpart: modern Democracy

La médecine connaît actuellement en France une crise de ses repères et de ses valeurs conséquente aux bouleversements scientifiques, techniques et sociologiques qu'elle a connue au cours du XXe siècle. Cette thèse vise à explorer les tenants et les aboutissants de cette situation, à partir d'une étude historique et philosophique de l'émergence et du développement de la médecine française moderne puis contemporaine, entendue à la fois comme profession, discours scientifique et pratique sociale. De la formation du corps médical à l'apparition d'un discours autonome des usagers de santé, nous défendons l'idée selon laquelle la genèse et l'évolution du discours médical, depuis le XVIIIe siècle jusqu'à nos jours, repose sur sa capacité à répondre à la question fondatrice des possibilités d'objectivation scientifique et technique de la subjectivité humaine. Ce problème, originairement épistémologique, se révèle au cours de notre généalogie de nature tant philosophique qu'éthique et sociopolitique, nous conduisant finalement à rechercher les outils de problématisation de la crise contemporaine au fondement de la relation médicale moderne. L'étude de la correspondance du médecin des Lumières Samuel-Auguste Tissot (1728-1797) nous offre finalement un contre-point essentiel pour préciser les conditions de possibilités d'une médecine, que nous souhaitons pour le XXIe siècle, et au sein de laquelle est assuré le respect de l'autonomie et de l'identité propres à l'ensemble des sujets, qu'ils soient soignés ou soignants.

Etudier les forteresses des villes de Bourgogne signifie s'intéresser aux rapports entre, d'une part, ces bâtiments et leurs occupants et, d'autre part, la société dans laquelle ils sont implantés. Une ville avec un château fort n'est pas toujours un bourg castral. Le château peut engendrer, déplacer, ou dynamiser une agglomération. Sa représentation traduit également la place qu'il occupe dans la société. La genèse de la cité a souvent des conséquences tout au long de l'époque moderne sur les relations entre le château et la ville. Dans la guerre, le château peut représenter la ruine ou le salut pour la ville. Dans la paix, c'est le plus souvent un poids mort : il faut l'entretenir, parfois aussi entretenir la garnison. Mais dans la dialectique villes/châteaux, les premières sont largement gagnantes aux XVIIe et XVIIIe s., ce qui se concrétise par des réaffectations, des abandons, ou le plus souvent des destructions des forteresses urbaines.

This is no surprise coming from a man who was born into a people who had their own celebrated founder and foundations, and immersed himself in the writings of classical republicans and the quasi-mythical histories of ancient city-states where the heroic lawgiver played an important and legitimate role in political foundations. However, Rousseau's propositional political writings (those written for Geneva, Corsica, and Poland) have been accused of being unsystematic and running the spectrum from conservative and prudent to radical and utopian. It is this seeming incongruence which is the subject of this thesis. In particular, it is argued that this confusion is born out the failure to recognize a systematic distinction between "founding" and "re-founding" political societies in both the history of political thought, and Rousseau's own work (a distinction in Rousseau which has rarely been noted, let alone treated to a study of its own). By recognizing this distinction one can identify two Rousseaus; the conservative and prudent thinker who is wary of making changes to established political systems and constitutional foundations (the re-founder), and the radical democrat fighting for equality, and claiming that no state is legitimate without popular sovereignty (the founder). In demonstrating this distinction, this thesis examines the ancient concept of the lawgiver, the growth and expansion of the idea leading up to the eighteenth century, Rousseau's own philosophic writings on the topic, and the differing political proposals he wrote for Geneva, Corsica, and Poland. The thesis argues that although there is a clear separation between these two types of political proposals, they remain systematically Rousseauvian.

Paul Tannery (1843-1904) est aujourd'hui considéré, par la communauté des historiens des sciences, comme une de ses figures patrimoniales. En effet, c'est déjà l'ampleur de sa production historique qui lui vaut cette notoriété, alors qu'il mène toute sa carrière dans les Manufactures de l'État. Coéditeur des Œuvres de Fermat et des Œuvres de Descartes, il est aussi un spécialiste des sciences antiques, dont notamment les trois ouvrages (Pour l'histoire de la science hellène, La Géométrie grecque, Recherches sur l'astronomie ancienne) font époque aux côtés de son édition des Opera omnia du mathématicien Diophante d'Alexandrie. À la fin du XIXe siècle, tandis que l'histoire des sciences se manifeste essentiellement en marge des sciences, en philosophie et dans des pratiques érudites, Paul Tannery revendique pleinement le titre d'historien. Et par là même, il appelle à l'autonomie de l'histoire des sciences, comme discours particulier sur la science, avec ses enjeux et ses méthodes propres. Mais, alors qu'il tient cette place au panthéon des historiens des sciences, celle-ci n'a été examinée et critiquée depuis un siècle, que par des études touchant surtout un point particulier de son historiographie, à savoir son plaidoyer pour une histoire générale des sciences. L'enjeu de notre thèse est de montrer la participation de l'œuvre de Tannery à l'invention du métier d'historien des sciences. Par une lecture globale de son œuvre redonnant une place de choix à ses travaux d'érudition, nous cherchons d'une part à éclairer sa pratique historienne de polytechnicien versé dans les humanités, de l'autre à caractériser son action en faveur de l'autonomie de l'histoire des sciences.

Ce mémoire étudie la manière dont s'est construite la vision de la réforme du grec moderne, ce qu'il est nommé aussi le projet puriste, dans la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle. L'objectif est de mettre en lumière certains facteurs qui ont conduit la langue puriste (katharevousa) à un échec, à l'aube du nouveau siècle. Cette recherche porte d'abord sur la consolidation, dans la conjoncture historique des années 1850-1880, d'une idéologie qui appuie et légitime la place d'une variété archaïsante du grec moderne (katharevousa) comme langue nationale. D'autre part, il est aussi question d'étudier, dans ce cadre idéologique précis, la formation de projets linguistiques et de stratégies visant à accomplir le processus de construction d'une langue nationale. Ces projets concernent, entre autres, une série de représentations portant sur l'idée que l'on se fait de la langue cible, de sa fixation et de sa diffusion, de la perspective temporelle de la réforme, ainsi que de la place des acteurs sociaux, ou bien de la place qui est réservée à la langue vernaculaire dans ce processus. Nous constatons que la perception de l'histoire de la langue grecque et de son rôle au sein de la société a des répercussions sur la façon de définir la langue cible, sur l'orientation de la réforme et sur la hiérarchisation de ses objectifs. L'intérêt de la recherche se porte également sur les attentes et l'attitude des élites lettrées face à l'État, sur les champs où le pouvoir politique intervient, ainsi que sur ceux où il reste en retrait. En guise de conclusion, nous esquissons le cadre au sein duquel émerge le mouvement démoticiste, au crépuscule du XIXe siècle.

La thèse a pour objet les liens entre l'élite municipale de Rome et les classes " populaires " au cours des XVIe et XVIIe siècle. On se propose de montrer que les liens qui unissaient l'élite à la population des quartiers ont joué un rôle fondamental dans le processus de construction du pouvoir local et d'accès au pouvoir politique municipal. Le travail s'attache à démontrer que la base locale du pouvoir municipal était constituée par les élites à la faveur des transactions tant économiques que sociales qu'elles passaient avec la population des quartiers : locations, échanges commerciaux, services domestiques, embauches de salariés, etc. Ces relations se développaient autour du patrimoine immobilier et foncier, et particulièrement autour du complexe résidentiel des familles de l'élite. Dans la Rome des siècles XVIe et XVIIe, la classe nobiliaire municipale était caractérisée par une forte mobilité sociale ainsi que par son ouverture à de nouveaux arrivants ; d'où l'absence d'une définition univoque et explicite du " gentilhomme ", ainsi que d'une liste d'inscription des membres de l'élite (le livre d'or de la noblesse romaine ne fut établi qu'en 1746). Pour obtenir un office municipal, le candidat était censé être un " homme illustre " du quartier où il résidait : mais par qui la qualité d'illustre était-elle conférée ? Auprès de qui le candidat devait-il être connu, et reconnu, en tant que gentilhomme ? Ce travail voudrait mettre en évidence le rôle joué par les échanges entre le " haut " et le " bas " du monde social urbain dans le processus de construction du pouvoir local et donc, en dernière analyse, dans la formation des élites : les charges politiques du Capitole ne seraient que la formalisation d'une autorité effective qui se construisait et s'exerçait tout d'abord dans le territoire. Une formalisation certainement importante si l'on considère que l'obtention d'un office municipal se voyait retenue comme une preuve de noblesse. On voit donc très clairement l'intérêt que les candidats au Capitole avaient à se construire une base de pouvoir local. Ce travail s'insère dans le contexte historiographique de la micro-histoire. Il met en oeuvre un cadre interprétatif qui se nourrit de concepts et modèles empruntés à l'anthropologie politique, et notamment ceux qui décrivent le pourvoir comme une construction relationnelle. La nature relationnelle du pouvoir est le point de départ des études qui ont identifié des modèles de gestion du pouvoir centrés sur les individus, dont l'autorité est construite et reconnue tout d'abord au sein d'un réseau social particulier. Trois modèles ont été particulièrement utiles pour étudier les élites de la Rome moderne : en ordre croissant d'importance, la relation patron-client, l'entrepreneur et le big-man. Plan de la thèse : Une première partie présente certains des éléments-clés de la recherche, ainsi que les débats historiographiques dont ils font l'objet : le patriciat urbain (chapitre I), le fonctionnement du gouvernement municipal (chapitre II) et les modèles de carrières municipales (chapitre III). Cette partie a semblé nécessaire afin d'introduire des concepts et des catégories - telles que l'élite municipale, le Capitole et les carrières politiques - qui sont centrales dans l'ensemble de ce travail. Avec la deuxième partie, on aborde la construction du pouvoir local, en analysant l'ancrage des acteurs dans le quartier d'un point de vue socio-topographique. Les chapitres IV et V analysent la présence des familles de la noblesse municipale dans l'espace du quartier, en se focalisant sur le palais - et ce qui l'a précédé, le complexe résidentiel médiéval -, et ceux qui y habitaient et qui le fréquentaient. Le but est de montrer que, tout au long de la période examinée, le palais a continué d'être un centre d'agrégation d'un groupe informel qui se créait autour du noble, selon un modèle qui peut évoquer, mutatis mutandis, les fiefs urbains de la Rome médiévale. Dans le chapitre V, on étudie aussi le rôle topographique du palais sur les alentours, et la formation d'îlots, des espaces semi-privés de " propriété " de la famille. Les formes de l'autorité personnelle et son rôle dans les quartiers sont décrits dans le chapitre VI, qui présente les différents moyens mis en œuvre pour garder l'emprise sur le territoire : de la violence à la charité. Avec la troisième partie, on aborde le sujet des transactions économiques et sociales qui liaient les membres de l'élite municipale aux habitants des quartiers, pour montrer la logique sociale des échanges. On a découpé le thème en trois chapitres, qui portent sur les biens immobiliers et les relations entre locataires et propriétaires (chapitre VII), la gestion de domaines et vignes et les rapports avec les salariés (chapitre VIII) et les relations de crédit (chapitre IX). Enfin, une quatrième partie est consacrée à une étude de cas, celui de la famille Velli et du quartier Trastevere. Le rione a été choisi parce qu'il était le plus " populaire " de la ville, un territoire urbain à vocation agricole et commerciale. Les Velli y étaient parmi les familles les plus importantes. Divisée en deux chapitres (le X, qui traite de l'ancrage de la famille dans le quartier et le XI qui porte sur les transactions des Velli avec les habitants du Trastevere), cette dernière partie voudrait reprendre l'ensemble des aspects du modèle qui ont été présentés au cours de la thèse, autour d'un cas familial. Ce faisant, on souhaité proposer une vue d'ensemble des mécanismes de construction du pouvoir local au sein d'un quartier.

The thesis, which is based on extensive archival materials, explores the origins of the on-going conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan by focusing on the emergence of the first Armenian Republic in 1918 and its territorial issues with Azerbaijan, in order to understand the factors which led to this conflict. It examines the background to the creation of the first Armenian Republic by researching the location of the ‘historical Armenian homeland’, the construction and reconstruction of the notion of the ‘Armenian homeland’, the aspects facilitating the way in which the ideology and strategy of the Armenian national movement developed, and the factors instrumental in the construction of the Armenian identity. The work provides a historical background to the Armenian claims to Garabagh and Nakhchyvan and analyses the ethnic, historical, economic, geographical and security arguments used by the first Armenian Republic to substantiate its vision of the territorial delimitation between Armenia and Azerbaijan with regard to these regions at the Paris Peace Conference in 1919. The thesis also considers the positions of the external powers involved in the South Caucasus vis-à-vis the Garabagh and Nakhchyvan issues and assesses the impact of their stance on the settlement of these conflicts.

This thesis examines the methods used by the Ministerium für Staatssicherheit (MfS), more commonly known as the Stasi, or East German secret police, for extraction of information from citizens of the German Democratic Republic for the purpose of espionage and covert operations inside East Germany, as it pertains to the deliberate brainwashing of East German citizens. As one of the most efficient intelligence agencies to ever exist, the Stasi’s main purpose was to monitor the population, gather intelligence, and collect or turn informants. They used brainwashing techniques to control the people of the GDR, keeping the populace paralyzed with fear and paranoia. By surrounding themselves with a network of informants they prevented actions against the dictatorial communist regime. Using the video testimonies of former prisoners, and former confidential informants who worked closely with and collaborated with Stasi agents, in combination with periodicals and previous historical studies, this work argues that the East German Police State’s brainwashing techniques had long and lasting consequences both for German citizens, and for the psychiatric health of former GDR citizens. The scope and breadth of the techniques and data compiled for use by the Stasi were exhaustive, and the repercussions of their use are still being felt and discovered twenty five years after the fall of the Berlin Wall. This study aims to show the lasting effects brainwashing had on former informants and the Stasi’s victims.

This thesis examines the first seventeen years of the history of the Museum of Modern Art Oxford (MOMA), from its founding in 1965 until c. 1982. It is concerned with the changing relationships between the museum and its audience, focusing on those aspects of the museum's programming that shed light on its role as a public mediator of recent art. This provides a means to consider the underlying values and commitments that informed MOMA's emergence as a leading contemporary art institution. Chapter one examines the museum's relationship to utopian countercultures through the metaphor of the museum as 'garden'; chapter two considers the erstwhile 'permanent' collection and its connection to corporate patronage; chapter three investigates the parallel forces of institutional critique and institutionalization; and chapter four addresses didactic strains in the museum's representation of an emergent multiculturalism. Although dedicated to the history of a single regional gallery, the thematic structure of the thesis provides entry points into historical and theoretical issues of broader relevance. It is based on primary research in the previously neglected archive of what is now known as Modern Art Oxford, supplemented by interviews with artists and former staff members, and by close attention to British art periodicals and exhibition catalogues of the period. It is also informed by critical writings on museums and displays, and by artistic, social and museological histories, allowing the museum's activities to be situated within the cultural politics of these turbulent decades. The thesis suggests that institutional identity - as exemplified by the history of MOMA from 1965-1982 - is porous and discontinuous: the development of the museum over this period is animated by multiple and often contradictory ideals, continuously shaped by pragmatic considerations, and subject to a rich variety of subjective responses.

La question de la réalité, de la nature et du rôle de la relation entre science de l'univers et spiritualité dans l'oeuvre de connaissance scientifique, plus généralement dans l'histoire de la pensée, motive le présent travail. Afin de traiter cette question, l'auteur a choisi d'étudier la pensée de deux savants spiritualistes : Isaac Newton et Georges Lemaître, qui façonnent deux moments majeurs de l'histoire des sciences, celui de la fondation de la mécanique céleste, creuset de la science moderne, et celui de la fondation de la cosmologie moderne, lieu d'une définition radicalement nouvelle de l'univers et de la place de l'homme en son sein. Ces deux moments, newtonien et lemaîtrien, s'apparient l'un à l'autre, d'une part en raison de l'objet d'étude commun : le tout, et d'autre part en termes de succession et d'avancées dans l'histoire des sciences, puisqu'ils nous entraînent de la science du ciel en l'absolu newtonien, à la science du commencement et de l'évolution cosmologique en la relativité générale. La relation entre science de l'univers et spiritualité se révèle, sur la base de l'étude détaillée des deux pensées, comme une relation dynamique à double sens : de la science à la spiritualité et inversement, et une dimension cruciale de l'histoire conceptuelle, plus généralement de l'histoire de la pensée. Celui-ci en ressort étayé. Mais au-delà des termes mêmes de l'histoire de la pensée, la démarche première de l'auteur a consisté à comprendre des acteurs éminents de celle-ci, comprendre, à travers leur démarche de pensée, l'être, l'esprit, par la lettre de l'histoire. Ce travail, le premier en son genre, en traitant de certains ressorts essentiels de la dynamique de l'esprit et de l'histoire de la pensée, traite des fondements de la connaissance.

Witchcraft beliefs were a vital element of the social, religious, and political landscapes of England in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. English society, buffeted by ongoing processes of social, economic, and religious change, was increasingly polarized along material, ideological, and intellectual lines, exacerbated by rising poverty and inequality, political factionalism, religious dissension, and the emergence of Enlightenment philosophical reasoning. The embeddedness of witchcraft and demonism in early modern English cosmologies and quotidian social relations meant that religious and existential anxieties, interpersonal disputes, and threats to local order, settled by customary self-regulatory methods at the local level or prosecuted in court, were often encompassed within the familiar language and popular discourses of witchcraft, social order, and difference. Using trial pamphlets, newspapers, periodicals, and intellectual texts, this thesis examines the imbrications of these discourses and their collectively- determined meanings within the increasingly rationalized legal contexts and widening world of Augustan England, demonstrating the often deeply encoded ways in which early modern English men and women made sense of their own experiences and constituted and re-constituted their identities and affinities.
Disorderly by nature, an inversion of natural, religious, and social norms, witchcraft in the Christian intellectual tradition simultaneously threatened and preserved order. Just as light could not exist without dark, or good without evil, there could be no fixed state of order: its existence was determined, in part, by its antithesis. Such diacritical oppositions extended beyond the metaphysical and are legible in contemporary notions of social difference, including attitudes about the common and poorer sorts of people, patriarchal gender and sexual roles, and nascent racial ideologies. These attitudes, roles, and ideologies drew sharp distinctions between normative and transgressive appearances, behaviours, and beliefs. This thesis argues that they provided a blueprint for the discursive construction of identity categories, defined in part by alterity, and that intelligible in witchcraft discourses are these fears of and reactions to disruptive and disorderly difference, otherness, and deviance—reactions which could themselves become deeply disruptive. In exploring the intersections of poverty, gender, sexuality, and race within collective understandings of witchcraft in Augustan England, this thesis aims to contribute to our understandings of the complex and dynamic ways in which English men and women perceived themselves, their communities, and the world around them.

Uppsatsen handlar om undervisning om kriget i forna Jugoslavien 1991-1995. Vår avsikt var att ta reda på i vilken omfattning det undervisas om kriget, i vilka årskurser det undervisas om det, vilka läromedel som lärare använder sig av, samt om det uppkommer konflikter i samband med undervisningen då det finns elever med ursprung i forna Jugoslavien i klassrummet. I vår undersökning använder vi oss av ett sociokulturellt perspektiv för att se om lärare tar hänsyn till och anpassar undervisningen till elevernas skilda bakgrunder, vi har även valt att analysera resultaten med hjälp av ett interkulturellt förhållningssätt.

A critical investigation of the public/private distinction as it has been conceived in Anglo-American political thinking in the second half of the 20th century. A broadly held consensus has developed amongst many theorists that public/private does not refer to any single determinate distinction or relationship but rather to an often ambiguous range of related but analytically distinct conceptual oppositions. The argument of this thesis is that if we approach public/private in the search for analytic or conceptual clarity then this consensus is correct. Against this I propose that a number of the most dominant invocations of the distinction can be understood to express public/private as an irreducibly political dialectic that mediates the relationship between the subjective and objective side of social and political life. By locating these conceptually diverse invocations within a broader and more determinate framework of the historical development and contestation of the boundaries which establish the conditions for subjectivity, as the assertion of political agency, on the one hand, and which demarcate, police and defend these particular boundaries, as part of the objectively given character of social life and institutional organisation, on the other hand, then a more determinate character to public/private can be recognized. I then seek to explore the capacity of this model to capture and explain the peculiar post-war problematisation of public/private amongst a number of new left thinkers in Britain and America.

<p> An individual narrative relating subjective experience with communal social norms and practices is the modern way of understanding identity. Modern science also bridges the gap between a subjective experience and theoretical knowledge. In translating from the micro-social level of direct experience to the macro-social or collective experience, the particular and the subjective tend to be drowned out by conceptual totalities. Consumer capitalism however, at its extreme virtual limits, makes subjective experience central, and pushes metaphysical idealism back. The artist's knowledge, acquired through the juxtaposition of the human self at its most intimate level with the general or objective order of materials, also erodes a modern metaphysics. Language in psychoanalysis allows us to engage in self-identification and discover the subject within the spoken or written word by uncovering traces of an illicit desire that is repressed in metaphysics and rationalism. Psychoanalysis provides insight into how the decoded social space of capitalist production can be reconfigured as a meaningful space of subjective desire. Today's ubiquitous digital discourse, coupled with the universality of a machine time in the increasingly mechanized market, gives us globalization. A form of consciousness defined by the operations of the market recognizes the interwoven functions of humans and technologies/materials in a wide and complex production—including economic and social/cultural aspects. Outside of the dialectical structure of modern knowledge, social identity can only be a temporary coalescence of a subject that is staked upon a set of events of a specific and foundational significance. As a modern polarity of identity and negation is closed with globalization, social identity becomes situated with respect to a global information economy that increasingly reflects, not commodity objects and alienated subjects, but difference as such: capitalist production is nothing but the unbreakable rhythm that rearticulates a homogeneous Globality with each of its cycles. Under these conditions, otherness is an intelligible difference, rather than a repressed periphery of the ego ideal. As difference or alterity beyond the identity of subject and object, the Other is the counterpart of the void that is subjectivity itself. In the knowledge economy primarily constituted as the production of difference, subjectivity and otherness are modalities of a more thorough ecological integration with the environment.</p>

De nos jours, le motif de la " crise de l'éducation " est récurrent dans les discussions publiques sur le système éducatif, et ce des deux côtés de l'Atlantique. Aux Etats-Unis, c'est au lendemain de la seconde guerre mondiale qu'il prend une tournure nouvelle. Jusqu'alors on avait parlé de " crise " pour désigner les difficultés matérielles et financières du système, mais l'expression prend une autre signification après 1945, tandis que s'installe un débat entre les partisans de l'éducation moderne, modèle inspiré par les principes de l'éducation progressiste, et les défenseurs d'une éducation humaniste, qui dénoncent une dégradation des exigences intellectuelles et des résultats de l'enseignement public. Cette étude se propose de restituer les termes de ce débat et d'analyser ses répercussions sur les dynamiques du système éducatif américain. La confrontation entre deux philosophies de l'éducation ne se limite pas à la sphère des professionnels et on en retrouve les échos dans la presse de grande diffusion comme dans certains films hollywoodiens. Alors que les États-Unis font face à une crise de confiance après le lancement réussi du satellite Spoutnik, le gouvernement américain désigne le système éducatif comme maillon faible en s'appuyant sur les critiques formulées tout au long des années 1950 par les adversaires de l'éducation moderne. Le télescopage du débat sur l'éducation et des logiques de Guerre froide ouvre alors la voie à une intervention fédérale inédite dans le domaine de l'éducation, avec l'adoption du National Defense Education Act de 1958.

Through discursive essays and poetic narrative, Antithetical Commentaries on X, Y and the Disruption of Being explores the tenuous relationship between modes of measurement and the struggle for human relevance in the post-contemporary digital age. In the introductory essay, “Not the Feather, but the Bird”, I give an overview of the inherent problems of object-oriented ontology, and how it relates to aesthetics and social issues of our times. In the Developmental Overview, I detail how I developed my installation approach and techniques, particularly with regard to the three-way dynamic of the artist:work:viewer relationship and how it can encourage a ‘transgression’ that leads to the possibility of a transformative awareness of being. Subsequently, I present a series of ‘antithetical’ commentaries that neither explain nor expand the installation, rather, they create a non-binary duality that, through an entirely non-linear anti-narrative, work to erode the overlay of personal, civic and collective grids present in the memory space/time referenced in the video, TAG. Finally, in “Grid: Towards a Transgressive Humanism.” I propose a path by which installation art might serve to create transgressive opportunities for viewers, rather than the transcendence sought through religious rituals, which often reinforce stigmas, fears and authoritarian social dynamics, or worse, the reductive loop, of many contemporary approaches to art which proclaim
their detachment in wordy displays, essentially leading to a form of aesthetic nihilism. This Transgressive Humanism is not presented as a dogma, but rather a revitalization of the work as a vessel of possibilities, an agent of creative growth for the artist and the viewer.

This dissertation explores the nexus of religious, political, and economic issues that led to the socially and religiously divisive intra-Protestant dispute over the proper interpretation and celebration of the Eucharist during the first years of the German Reformation. This dispute roiled cities and territories throughout Germany beginning around the year 1524 as lay men and women began organizing and agitating to promote a symbolic understanding of the Eucharist. The laity saw in this initially academic debate a vehicle through which they could articulate and fight for their own bundle of religious and social concerns. The imperial free city of Augsburg, one of the wealthiest, most populous and most politically powerful cities in the Empire, serves in the dissertation as the case study for a German-wide phenomenon. Chapter one contextualizes the Augsburg eucharistic disputes both by laying out the course of the academic eucharistic debates that raged among Martin Luther, Huldreich Zwingli, and their various supporters and by describing the social and economic tensions unique to Augsburg. Chapter two investigates the Augsburg preaching of the Franciscan friar Hans Schilling, whose congregation began to make connections between the adoption of a symbolic understanding of the Eucharist and their political and economic interests. Chapter three explores the reasons behind the spectacular success of the Augsburg preacher Michael Keller. Keller articulated a symbolic understanding of Christ's presence in the Eucharist which resonated with the concerns of many Augsburg residents that the clergy were denying them the right of self-determination in religious issues, that the political elites were driving them out of their traditional role in civic life, and that the large Augsburg merchants were destroying their economic independence. Chapter four discusses the role of marginalized groups in Augsburg who formed sectarian cells, articulating their alienation from society through their doctrine of the Eucharist. Eventually these groups transitioned to Anabaptism as they found that their doctrine of the Eucharist would not carry the full weight of their sectarian agenda. Chapter five interacts with a series of historiographical questions in light of the evidence presented in the foregoing chapters.
