Abstract (sommario):

Abstract. The contemporary rise of data visualization and imaging technologies in all areas of knowledge now places design and visuality at the heart of research and its communication, with fundamental implications for scientific epistemology. Jacques Bertin's Laboratoire de Graphique (LG) of the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (EHESS) in France, is a privileged entry for this study, since it was a major player in this movement, at the crossroads of graphic innovation and social sciences as they reinvented themselves in the second half of the twentieth century.

This intervention aims to explore a black box of research in the humanities and social sciences, according to two approaches, that of the interdisciplinary collaborations and that more experimental of the graphic design and formatting of information. By design we mean as all the processes from graphical display of data, to CHI, new methods of scientific representation.

This laboratory was created and directed by the cartographer and semiologist Jacques Bertin from 1954 to 2000 at the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Études and, under the impetus of Fernand Braudel, at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (EHESS), is considered as a forerunner of productions and reflections on graphic research in the social sciences. His work articulates an unprecedented production of images, visualization of data and scientific research, forming the subject of a fundamental treatise, Graphical Semiology (1967). The intervention will trace the largely unknown history of this laboratory, will pinpoint the contributions and the intellectual trajectory of its graphic experiments and collaborations.

Indeed, while the activities related to the LG's cartographic research are relatively well known, its interactions with history, statistics, sociology, anthropology, urbanism, literature and the decorative arts remain unexplored.

Jacques Bertin, in Semiology of graphics (1967), highlighted the concept of « visual variables » to build a general rhetoric of visual representation: background shape orientation grain color, etc.

The paradox of these visual variables is the desire to achieve an objectivity of representation, while taking into account the ”aesthetic“ part of the data. This graphic rhetoric developed by Bertin has influenced many works and disciplines, becoming almost standard, convention, rules. In this session we propose to discuss the relationship between design and visual variables in the contemporary visual display of information.

We will start by presenting the two complementary funds of archives of the Laboratoire de Graphique the NAs and the BnF, allowing a genetic analysis of the origin of certain concepts of Bertin to give an account of the process of their elaboration.

We will present collaborations, content, and processes to produce a story that is at once aesthetic, social, economic, and political. We will measure the evolution of scientific imaginaries, the values and uses of representation methods and graphic communication tools, their epistemological scope into 4 thematics:

The Life of the Graphic Lab: Pathways, Collaborations and Practices at EHESS. Collaboration Braudel-Bertin,creation of the visual identity of the EHESS, practices and conceptualization of the place of graphic research in the social sciences. Bertin heritage in current research programs

The graphic semiotics of Jacques Bertin: genesis and effects, including in contemporary digital humanities (statistics, big data, cultural analytics). Visual variable and Display of information as the starting point of a research, fieldworks

The expressivity and plasticity of graphic work: the representation of geographical and human territory. Contribution of the experimental work of the Graphical Laboratory to cartography; materialization of the instrumental design and graphic knowledge in the uses and materiality of the cards from the point of view of the plastic creation and the patrimonial conservation. Objectivity and visual display: relationships between graphics and fact in scientific demonstration

Graphical semiology in contemporary research, from graphic semiology to information design; pedagogical and epistemological issues of graphic semiology; dissemination of the work of the Laboratoire de Graphique and impact on the field of design and different disciplines in the international context. « Redesigning » the concepts of Bertin: how new data processing tools can contribute?

The new convergences between design and research will be mobilized to question the place devolved to design in the visual and instrumental construction of contemporary scientific practices and knowledge. This will stimulate a dynamic and a collective experience of interdisciplinary discovery of uses of these methods and tools in heritage context.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract. Adaptations of Semiology of Graphics: Diagrams, Networks, Maps (Bertin, 1967), and more broadly Jacques Bertin’s graphics research published since the mid-sixties, are manifold. So is the wide range of fields chosen to present various visual transformations and deep interpretations proposed to explain his actual graphical methods. From agriculture to demography, or european electric industry to animal behaviour responding to the light (pill bugs…), anything that can be quantified, compared and classified could fit in some graphic treatment for a better understanding. In this respect, graphics is able to go deeper and faster than any other analysis.

I would like to present a forgotten, unusual, rather unfinished, attempt to make use of graphics in a french design graduate school pedagogy during the eighties. Obviously, the impact of Bertin's research is huge in the cartography and social or historical sciences, but it seems seldom in the more casual educational domain, and more particularly in graphic design training course. Is it a paradox?

Abstract (sommario):
In this paper, we explore the relevance of graphic novels to understanding and responding to the complex nature of traumatic experiences. We argue that graphic narratives of trauma, which combine visual images and written text, significantly differ from biomedical and legal accounts by presenting the nuances of traumatic experiences that escape the conventions of written testimony. Building on the literature that integrates social justice concerns with visual methods and graphic medicine, we contend that graphic narratives effectively convey the complexities of traumatic experiences, including embodied experiences that are not always apparent, intelligible, or representable in written form, leading to greater social recognition of the dynamics and consequences of trauma. To illustrate this claim, we analyze Una’s Becoming Unbecoming (2015), a graphic novel that explores themes relating to trauma and social justice. Una relies on the graphic medium to explore the interconnections between personal and collective experiences of gender-based violence, and to show how physical embodied experience is central to her own experience of trauma. Graphic narratives like Becoming Unbecoming also offer a space for addressing the emotional, physical and financial costs of survivorship that usually are not available in legal written testimonies, potentially leading to better justice outcomes for trauma survivors in terms of social intelligibility and recognition, and access to social resources for healing.

Abstract (sommario):
The application of systemism, an innovative and user-friendly technique for generating lucid, graphic summaries of analytical arguments, can enhance the social sciences. Content, as research and pedagogy move forward, becomes increasingly vast and diverse in theory and methods. Systemism offers both a means and a method for enhanced communication in the face of challenges posed by the rapid expansion of the social sciences in the fast-paced world of the new millennium. This is the motivation for a Special Issue of Social Sciences that will show systemism in action. The Visual International Relations Project (VIRP) archive continues to accumulate materials. The contents of this Special Issue will demonstrate the value of that resource across a wide range of subject areas. This introductory article proceeds in five sections. The first section provides a general overview of systemism and the VIRP. The second section introduces systemism in greater detail as a graphic approach to the communication of ideas. The third section applies systemism to convey the framework for analysis utilizing a classic work of social science—The Logic of Collective Action. The fourth section outlines the articles that follow in making up the Special Issue. The fifth and final section sums up what has been accomplished in this introductory article.

Abstract (sommario):
The history of the art of graphic design and posters goes back to cave drawings during the Stone Age. Graphic design and posters are based on social needs and change in different stages of social development. They are now enjoying one of the apexes of their development. The art of graphic and poster design which developed and evolved in the historical and social development process, has taken on new dimensions during the transition from the modern to the postmodern period in accordance with the needs of our society of consumption and by using the technical/technological tools and methods within this period. In particular, the invention of the printing press, lithography, and the Industrial Revolution have led to great leaps in the art of graphic and poster design as in all other areas of life. Computer and digital technologies that were first developed in the middle of the 20th century almost brought about a revolution in the art of graphic and poster design. These great breakthroughs caused technical and technological innovations and changed the art of graphic design. While education in graphic design acquired an institutional dimension, its aims and objectives were transformed. Discussions of postmodernism, new forms of relationship, concepts and schools are reflected in the art. Relationships between postmodernism and graphic design, poster styles categorized as postmodern and advertising culture have caused new debates. Advertisements and advertising posters have acquired new forms to meet the needs of today’s consumer society, which are getting more and more complex. Its dynamics have changed posters and advertising. This study discusses the evolution of the art of graphic and poster design within the whole historical and social development process, its dimensions, postmodernism and striking examples of postmodern advertising posters.

Abstract (sommario):
Various world-class research investigations increasingly focus on matters pertaining to the role of local communities. The research aimed to examine the theoretical aspects of the concept of community in the context of social sciences. The research results revealed that community studies was a relatively new field for academics in Latvia, which became relevant after common European Union priorities in community issues were defined. An essential feature of a community is common identity, a common sense of belonging to the locality, human relationships, the environment, culture and values. Most frequently, according to a survey of local residents, a community the respondents felt a sense of belongingness to was a territorial one. The research employed the following methods: monographic, descriptive, graphic, analysis, synthesis as well as a sociological method – questionnaire surveying.

Abstract (sommario):
The use of six non-fiction graphic novels to teach historical agency in a social studies methods course was examined in a critical action research study. Pre-service social studies teachers were asked to read one graphic novel and to discuss it with classmates, first in literature circles, then as a whole class. Data revealed graphic novels engaged pre-service teachers in thinking about historical agency, and helped them make connections between historical agency and their own agency. There were three overlapping ways pre-service teachers connected to historical agency in all six graphic novels: upbringing and personal experience, unpredictability of historical situations, and injustice. The findings highlight the value of graphic novels for teaching about historical agency in social studies courses because of their focus on historical agents’ positionality.

Abstract (sommario):
The library plays a crucial role in assisting patrons in accessing the knowledge they need. The library needs to ensure that its collections and services are easily accessible and utilizable by patrons. One way to enhance the accessibility of the library, both in terms of services and collections, is by implementing graphic design. This article explores the implementation of graphic design in the INSTIPER Yogyakarta Library using a qualitative descriptive method, with observation and literature review as data collection methods. Based on data processing results, the researcher identified four library activities that utilize graphic design: 1. Signage design and library information production; 2. Development of teaching materials for faculty members; 3. Development of realia collections and arboretum; 4. Publishing. The graphic design products produced by the library are disseminated through various media, ranging from traditional notice boards, computer screens, social media, to the Learning Management System (LMS). The results of these graphic design products are also used for various purposes, including location navigation, branding, educational materials, promotion, and information reformatting.

Abstract (sommario):
When applying statistical methods for analyzing data, with normality as an assumption there are different procedures of determining if a sample is drawn from a normally distributed population. Because normality is such a central assumption, the reliability of the procedures is of most importance. Much research focus on how good formal tests of normality are, while the performance of statisticians when using graphical methods are far less examined. Therefore, the aim of the study was to empirically examine how good students in statistics are at assessing if samples are drawn from normally distributed populations through graphical methods, done by a web survey. The results of the study indicate that the students distinctly get better at accurately determining normality in data drawn from a normally distributed population when the sample size increases. Further, the students are very good at accurately rejecting normality of data when the sample is drawn from a symmetrical non-normal population and fairly good when the sample is drawn from an asymmetrical distribution. In comparison to some common formal tests of normality, the students' performance is superior at accurately rejecting normality for small sample sizes and inferior for large, when drawn from a non-normal population.

Abstract (sommario):
Swedes spend annually tens of million crowns on gym memberships that are never used. My hypothesis is that it’s about motivation with a demarcation within the welcome and care for how beginners gets treated in the gyms by other members. A survey was conducted through interviews with both members, employees and managers from two gym chains, Friskis och Svettis and Fitness 24 Seven in Malmo, Sweden. A complementary to the survey came through a survey of the gym chains facilities to see how the advertising and other information was perceived by the members. A competitive analysis of similar mobile applications was also conducted. The analysis of the material resulted in specific core values including some additional facts which became my silver thread. Core values such as Community, Social affinity and Fellowship became words that characterized my interviews from the survey and later becoming the foundation for the design project. Based on this information, I designed a mobile application called Socify whose purpose is to solve the social problems that many beginners feel while linking it with the practical and theoretical knowledge gaps that beginners usually possess.

van, Romondt Vis Pauline. "Changing social scientific research practices : negotiating creative methods". Thesis, Loughborough University, 2016. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/22639.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
In recent decades social scientists have started to use qualitative creative methods1 more and more, because of epistemological and methodological developments on the one hand and demands of innovation by governmental funding agencies on the other. In my thesis I look at the research practices of social scientists who use these qualitative creative methods and answer the following main research question: How are practices and approaches from the arts (specifically visual lens-based arts, poetry, performance and narrative) negotiated in social scientific research practice? This question has been divided into the following three sub-questions: 1) How do social scientists negotiate the use of creative methods with other members of their research community? 2) How do social scientists negotiate the use of creative methods into their own research practices? 3) And how do creative methods emerge in the process? Using Lave and Wenger's approach to communities of practice (1991; Wenger, 1998) and Ingold and Hallam's (2007) conceptualisation of improvisation for my theoretical framework, I look at these practices as constantly emerging and changing, but at the same time determined by those same practices. Based on ongoing conversations with postgraduate research students, interviews with experienced researchers, participant observation at conferences and videos of my participants' presentations, I conclude that the use of creative methods is always embedded within existing research practices. When this is not the case, either participants themselves or other academics experience the creative methods as problematic or even as non-academic. In those cases boundarywork (the in- and exclusion of what is deemed academic) is performed more fiercely, making it difficult, if not impossible for creative methods to be truly innovative in the sense that it means a break with previous practices. Instead, we see small shifts in participants' academic practices and how creative methods are taken up in these practices. This means improvisation is a more apt term to describe how creative methods are making their way into social scientific research practices/into the social sciences. As such this conclusion has consequences for the way we think about learning methods, the production of knowledge, innovative methods and (inter)disciplinarity.

Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of using graphic organizers during prereading, reading, and postreading positions of the comprehension and retention of Chinese sixth-grade students who were identified as below-average or above-average readers. Chinese sixth graders from one school were first administered The Michigan Chinese Reading Test to identify reading level. Subjects were then assigned to one of the four treatment groups: traditional Chinese social studies method, graphic preorganizers, graphic organizers as a reading guide, and graphic post organizers. Two practice passages were first used to familiarize the subjects with how graphic organizers were utilized in instruction before reading on experimental passage. The dependent measure, 45 multiple-choice questions based on the experimental passage, was administered twice: the next day after the instructional sessions were concluded and again seven days later. The principal analysis to test the three null hypotheses was a 2 x 4 x 2 ANOVA with repeated measures on the last factor corresponding to the two administrations of the test. Two follow-up analyses of variance (ANOVAs) were used to test for differences in treatment condition sepa-rately for above-average readers and below-average readers, using the average of the immediate and the seven-day delayed tests. One Scheffe test was applied to find the location of significant differences among the four treatment conditions for above-average readers. Finally, four follow-up t-tests were used to test for differences in reading level at each of the four treatment levels.Three conclusions were drawn from the statistical analyses of the data: 1) graphic organizers had a significant effect on comprehension and retention only when above-average readers were required to process the organizers during reading; 2) graphic organizers did not produce significantly better comprehension and recall performance of below-average readers; and 3) the effect of graphic organizers was equal to that of the traditional Chinese social studies method in maintaining comprehension and recall for both above-average readers and below-average readers over a one-week delay.

Yu, Jingyuan. "Discovering Twitter through Computational Social Science Methods". Doctoral thesis, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/671609.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
As Twitter has covered up people’s daily life, it has became one of the most important information exchange platforms, and quickly attracted scientists’ attention. Researchers around the world have highly focused on social science and internet studies with Twitter data as a real world sample, and numerous analytics tools and algorithms have been designed in the last decade. The present doctoral thesis consists of three researches, first, given the 14 years (until 2020) of history since the foundation of Twitter, an explosion of related scientific publications have been witnessed, but the current research landscape on this social media platform remained unknown, to fill this research gap, we did a bibliometric analysis on Twitter-related studies to analyze how the Twitter studies evolved over time, and to provide a general description of the Twitter research academic environment from a macro level. Second, since there are many analytic software tools that are currently available for Twitter research, a practical question for junior researchers is how to choose the most appropriate software for their own research project, to solve this problem, we did a software review for some of the integrated frameworks that are considered most relevant for social science research, given that junior social science researchers may face possible financial constraints, we narrowed our scope to solely focus on the free and low-cost software. Third, given the current public health crisis, we have noticed that social media are one of the most accessed information and news sources for the public. During a pandemic, how health issues and diseases are framed in the news release impacts public’s understanding of the current epidemic outbreak and their attitudes and behaviors. Hence, we decided to use Twitter as an easy-access news source to analyze the evolution of the Spanish news frames during the COVID-19 pandemic. Overall, the three researches have closely associated with the application of computational methods, including online data collection, text mining, complex network and data visualization. And this doctoral project has discovered how people study and use Twitter from three different levels: the academic level, the practical level and the empirical level.

Hampton, Jennifer. "The nature of quantitative methods in A level sociology". Thesis, Cardiff University, 2018. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/118019/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
British sociology has been characterised as suffering from a 'quantitative deficit' originating from a shift towards qualitative methods in the discipline in the 1960s. Over the years, this has inspired a number of initiatives aimed at improving number work within the discipline, of which the Q-step programme is the most recent. These initiatives, and the work that supports them, primarily concern themselves with the curricula, attitudes, and output of students and academics within Higher Education. As such, the role that the substantive A level plays in post-16 quantitative education has been largely ignored. This thesis addresses this apparent gap in the literature, providing a study of the curriculum, with a particular focus on the quantitative method element therein. The thesis takes a mixed-method approach to curriculum research, encompassing the historical as well as the current, and the written as well as the practiced. The analysis is presented in a synoptic manner, interweaving data from across the methods used, in an attempt to provide an integrated and holistic account of A level Sociology. An overarching theme of marginalisation becomes apparent; not least with the subject itself, but also with quantitative methods positioned as problematic within the research methods element of the curriculum, which is itself bound and limited. The high-stakes exam culture is shown to dominate the behaviour of both teachers and students, regardless of their attitudes and understanding of the relevancy and/or importance of quantitative methods in the subject. Taken together, these findings imply a potential problem for recruitment into quantitative sociology, whilst offering an avenue by which this might be addressed. Linked to the high-stakes performativity culture, a novel conceptualisation of teachers' understandings of the relationship between their role, the curriculum, the discipline, and notions of powerful knowledge is offered.

NOVELLO, NOEMI. "The Quest for Integration in Mixed Methods Inquiry: A Research Synthesis on Mixed Methods Studies in Social Sciences". Doctoral thesis, Università degli Studi di Milano-Bicocca, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/10281/241259.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Mixed methods studies in social inquiry may follow two main perspectives on integration: on the one hand, complementarity seeks an information enrichment, a fuller and more comprehensive picture on a social phenomenon; on the other hand, convergence focuses on the chance of overcoming single methods’ bias through mixing. While the first approach results rather unproblematic – both theoretically and empirically – convergence seems to pose additional challenges, especially in the elicitation of “meta-inferences”. This dissertation presents a methodological research synthesis of mixed methods studies in social inquiry. Research questions are related to understandings, implementation and epistemological legitimization of integration within the academic community of scholars applying mixed methods in social sciences. Diverse research strategies were implemented, in order to answer to research objectives: automated content analysis was performed on articles published in academic journals; citation network analysis was applied on references lists of the same papers; semi-structured interviews with experts and the related thematic analysis were helpful to address scholars’ points of view on integration, as well as a modality to explore paradigms and epistemological issues.

Abstract (sommario):
Building upon the FAIR principles of (meta)data (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable) and drawing from research in the social, health, and data sciences, we propose a framework -FAIR2 (Frame, Articulate, Identify, Report) - for identifying and addressing discrimination bias in social data science. We illustrate how FAIR2 enriches data science with experiential knowledge, clarifies assumptions about discrimination with causal graphs and systematically analyzes sources of bias in the data, leading to a more ethical use of data and analytics for the public interest. FAIR2 can be applied in the classroom to prepare a new and diverse generation of data scientists. In this era of big data and advanced analytics, we argue that without an explicit framework to identify and address discrimination bias, data science will not realize its potential of advancing social justice.

"Assessing the Graphic Questionnaire Used in Digital Literacy Training". In InSITE 2019: Informing Science + IT Education Conferences: Jerusalem. Informing Science Institute, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.28945/4302.

Abstract (sommario):
[This Proceedings paper was revised and published in the 2019 issue of the journal Issues in Informing Science and Information Technology, Volume 16] Aim/Purpose: To capture digital training experiences, the paper introduces a novel data collection method – a graphic questionnaire. It aims to demonstrate the opportunities and limitations of this tool for collecting feedback from socially disadvantaged participants of digital literacy training about their progress. Background: In training of digital skills for disadvantaged audiences through informal educational interventions, it is important to get sufficient knowledge on factors that lead to their progress in the course of training. There are many tools to measure the achievements of formal education participants, but assessing the effectiveness of informal digital skills training is researched less. The paper introduces a small-scale case study of the training programme aimed at the developing of reading and digital skills among the participants from three socially disadvantaged groups – people with hearing impairments, children from low income families, and elderly persons. The impact of the training on participants was evaluated using different tools, including a short graphic questionnaire to capture the perceptions of the participants after each training. Methodology: We performed a thematic analysis of graphic questionnaires collected after each training session to determine how the students perceived their progress in developing literacy and digital skills. Contribution The findings of the paper can assist in designing assessment of digital literacy programmes that focus not only on final results, but also on the process of gaining digital skills and important factors that facilitate progress. Findings: The graphic questionnaire allowed the researchers to get insights into the perception of acquired skills and progressive achievements of the participants through rich self-reports of attitudes, knowledge gained, and activities during training sessions. However, the graphic questionnaire format did not allow the collection of data about social interaction and cooperation that could be important in learning. Recommendations for Practitioners: Graphic questionnaires are useful and easy-to-use tools for getting rich contextual information about the attitudes, behaviour, and acquisition of knowledge in digital literacy training. They can be used in applied assessments of digital literacy training in various settings. Their simplicity can appeal to respondents; however, in the long-run interest of respondents in continuing self-reports should be sustained by additional measures. Recommendations for Researchers: Researcher may explore the variety of simple and attractive research instruments, such as “honeycomb” questionnaires and similar, to facilitate data collection and saturate feedback with significant perception of personal experiences in gaining digital literacy skills. Impact on Society: Designing effective digital literacy programmes, including engaging self-assessment methods and tools, aimed at socially disadvantaged people will contribute to their digital inclusion and to solving the issues of digital divide. Future Research: Exploration of diverse research methods and expanding the research toolset in assessing digital literacy training could advance our understanding of important processes and factors in gaining digital skills.

Abstract (sommario):
Statistics on overall satisfaction with work-life balance show an EU average of 79%. This figure is higher than average in more than half of the EU countries, including Estonia and Lithuania. In Latvia, this indicator is only 73%, thus Latvia is in the 6th place from the end among the EU countries, which confirms the need to find solutions to support a worklife balance. Objective of the paper is to characterise a work-life balance from theoretical aspect and to provide an assessment of influencing factors among students population to develop research-based conclusions and suggestions. Research hypothesis: the students' assessment of the work-life balance differs according to gender and level of study program. Methods used in the research: monographic method, statistical data analysis method (Spearman correlation test), mathematical methods (comparison, calculation of weighted averages), sociological research method (survey), graphical method of interpretation (collection of statistical data, visualization of survey data). The theoretical part is based on the research carried out and the concepts provided in various sources. The practical part consists of the analysis of the results obtained in the students survey on the assessment of work-life balance and its influencing factors. Time-management skills were the lowest rated factor influencing work-life balance, however, they will continue to be vital in the face of rapid globalization, changes in labour market and lifelong learning. For students entering the labour market now or in the nearest future, it is crucial to develop their time-management abilities to acquire new skills and competences in accordance with the requirements of the labour market.

Abstract (sommario):
The number of the country's population has significantly decreased in the Baltic States over the last fifteen years, experiencing the highest wave of emigration in the years of the economic crisis, when many residents went to other countries to ensure higher incomes and material well-being in general. In the Baltic States, emigrants are mainly people of working age. This has an impact on the labour market and the national economy as a whole. As the role of the labour force in the formation of the national economy is very high, it is important to make correct and balanced decisions about the measures aimed at returning the labour force to the country, forming the remigration policy. The aim of the study is to analyse the remigration policy in the Baltic States in the context of general migration trends. The current study proposes the following hypothesis - the remigration policy in the Baltic States has been developed according to similar principles and includes a similar set of measure. The following research methods support the study: logicalconstructive method, scientific induction method, statistical data analysis method and graphical data processing method.

Abstract (sommario):
The article considers theoretical and methodological approaches in the study of the basics of promoting positive psychological health of the individual. The aim of the article was to analyze the current areas of research on the basics of promoting the psychological health of the individual. Ways to overcome difficulties in the formation of psychological well-being are identified. The method of objectification of feelings, personal experiences as a condition for promoting mental health is described. It is analyzed that the research priorities of modern domestic and foreign science lie in the plane of integration of different and often completely opposite, conceptual approaches and traditions. There are generalized conclusions about counseling, psychotherapy which promote positive psychological health. The conclusions directed to three directions: physical – actualization of own needs, desires, purposes, prospects; spiritual – understanding and acceptance of norms, requirements, traditions of the social environment for contact normalizing, interaction; material – the definition of professional self-realization, strategies for material needs providing. Drawing methods and the method of neurography diagnose the level of trauma, the possibility of accepting the attitudes of others to the individual: to allow to love yourself, others, to accept the love of others to yourself, to have the right to be, to live. The basics of promoting the psychological health of the individual are based on the balance of positive and negative emotions, experiences of a person. Responding to experiences in graphic methods enables the individual to create a new reality. The individual considers new strategies, images of his future in this new reality. This inspires a person to certain changes in moods, states, feelings, features of imagination, attitude to environment. Key words: basics of assistance, positive psychological health, personality, social environment, contact

Abstract (sommario):
Our study’s main object is travel anthropology, the branch of science that studies the history and nature of man, socio-cultural space, social relations, and structures by gathering information during short and long journeys. The publication aims to research the theoretical foundations and genesis of travel anthropology, outline its fundamental principles, and highlight interaction with related sciences. The article’s defining objectives are the analysis of the synthesis of fundamental research approaches in travel anthropology and their implementation in journalism. When we analyze what methods are used by modern authors, also called «cultural observers», we can return to the localization strategy, namely the centering of the culture around a particular place, village, or another spatial object. It is about the participants-observers and how the workplace is limited in space and time and the broader concept of fieldwork. Some disciplinary practices are confused with today’s complex, interactive cultural conjunctures, leading us to think of a laboratory of controlled observations. Indeed, disciplinary approaches have changed since Malinowski’s time. Based on the experience of fieldwork of Svitlana Aleksievich, Katarzyna Kwiatkowska-Moskalewicz, or Malgorzata Reimer, we can conclude that in modern journalism, where the tools of travel anthropology are used, the practical methods of complexity, reflexivity, principles of openness, and semiotics are decisive. Their authors implement both for stable localization and for a prevailing transition.
