Abstract (sommario):
I have an interest in transposing elements of sound, time, and motion into other forms. The thesis exhibition, small Trinity, presents my efforts to capture the essence of an explosion as a sculpture. The resulting objects provide viewers with the chance to examine an explosion in a stilled state, but also to consider the enormous powers we humans wield. Comprising the exhibition are three series: Exploded Vases (2014-15), Cast Explosions (2015) and small Trinity (2016). In each, an experimental methodology is applied to tracing, capturing and then casting the shape of small explosions in a manner that is raw and un-manipulated. For the title series, small Trinity (2016), I set a goal of casting an explosion 1/1,000,000th of the power of the first atomic bomb, Trinity (1945). Through a series of successively larger explosions and casts, the goal was achieved and presented as a series of aluminium, concrete and resin sculptures.

Abstract (sommario):
This dissertation introduces triple gluing lattices and proves that a triple gluing lattice is small if the key subcomponents are small. Then attention is turned to triple gluing irreducible small lattices. The triple gluing irreducible [Special characters omitted.] lattices are introduced. The conditions which insure [Special characters omitted.] small are discovered. This dissertation also give some triple gluing irreducible small lattices by gluing [Special characters omitted.] 's. Finally, K-structured lattices are introduced. We prove that a K-structured lattice L is triple gluing irreducible if and only if [Special characters omitted.] . We prove that no 4-element antichain lies in u 1 /v1 of a K-structured small lattice. We also prove that some special lattices with 3-element antichains can not lie in u1 /v1 of a K-structured small lattice.

Suess, Maureen Elizabeth. "Small Tales". Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/83879.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Small Tales is a 2D video game with hand drawn and watercolor painted assets that incorporates a series of vignettes centered on the collection of artifacts. Growing up, I experimented with and  investigated a wide variety of media, such as Alice and GameMaker but ultimately decided to  sharpen my fine arts skills and incorporate them in to video game engines in this thesis. A variety  of point and click adventure games such as the King's Quest and Monkey Island series inspired  the development of this game due to their emphasis on narrative and player interaction. This thesis developed from a series of earlier projects that helped me settle on four  primary objectives: vignetted narratives, player choice and consequences, visual and text  components working harmoniously, and replayability via randomized generation. A Processing  sketch emphasized the need for strong visual assets in addition to text-based narrative; in  addition to replayability via randomized strings or text for a unique narrative every iteration.  Afterwards, a Twine game further encouraged visual assets working with text, but solidified a  foundation in player choice and consequences. Finally, my first experiment in Unity with the  Adventure Creator helped me establish a functional workflow to achieve my four goals.   Small Tales itself revolves around a series of vignettes connected by the world of the  player character. Players wander an unfamiliar neighborhood to find artifacts that at the end of  the game reveal tiny stories about other worlds. The game was received well by players during  my defense for its ethereal atmosphere and for creating an engaging story world. But a handful  of suggestions from these same players could push the game to be even better. Small Tales will be available online after these critiques are taken under consideration.

Bajracharya, Pranisha, e Masdeu Natalia Roma. "Tacit Knowledge Transfer in Small Segment of Small Enterprises". Thesis, Linköping University, Department of Management and Economics, 2006. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-6209.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):

Background: Though small enterprises are regarded as engine for the modern economy, they are not pioneers when it comes to implementing new advances like tacit knowledge transfer procedures. Tacit knowledge is often referred as skill, know-how and expertise which are embedded in each individual in an organization. The critical skills and competences of employees are intangible assets and firms’ intellectual resources. In this context, the tacit dimension of knowledge is potentially important to be transferred among individuals, either in tacit or explicit form, to build the core capabilities of small enterprises.

Problem Discussion: The existent Knowledge Management (KM) research has been mainly focused on big companies, providing little information for small enterprises. Authors believe the lack of attention that those small enterprises are putting on the strategic management of their knowledge is worrying. Tacit knowledge is one of the less explored areas within KM due to the difficulty to codify, formulate or express it. Despite this fact, it is perceived as “some kind of Holy Grail that will enable magnificent things to happen as soon as the codes of tacit knowledge have been deciphered”.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to increase the understanding of the transference of tacit knowledge among individuals within small segment of small enterprises.

Method: To gather the information pertaining to tacit knowledge transfer in the small segment of small enterprises, authors have performed a qualitative and explanatory research by conducting several interviews with two small companies.

Result: Tacit to tacit knowledge transfer has been identified as more relevant than tacit to explicit conversion in the small segment of small enterprises. Therefore the main drivers of the transference of tacit knowledge are learning at personal level and common culture. Time, cost and distance have been recognized as major problems for small enterprises when transferring tacit knowledge.

Govender, Rhona. "Small but mighty : a global reconsideration of small-scale fisheries". Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/45403.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Small-scale (SS) fisheries have sustained people for millennia and are pervasive in coastal communities across the globe. Now, the future of what was once believed to be an endless supply of resources remains uncertain given current conditions. The small-scale fisheries sector employs over 34 million fishers, which is at least 24 times more than industrial fisheries. The vast majority of these small-scale fishers reside in developing countries, and strongly rely on these resources for food security and poverty alleviation. Despite their significance, global marine fisheries have been deeply troubled in recent history due to overfishing and inadequate management practices. It is imperative that policy makers base their decisions on reliable data in order to adequately manage this troubling situation, however, current information regarding the small-scale fisheries sector is dubious at best. After compiling data as to what constitutes a small-scale fishery and the associated catch, by country, a multiple linear regression was used to predict data for countries where none was obtained. Human development index (HDI), inshore fishing area (IFA), and whether or not the data came from the FAO, can be used to explain the variance in catch, and predict catch where countries are missing data. The multiple linear regression in Chapter 3 provided the global SS fisheries catch estimate of 25 million tonnes, which is 19% higher than the previous estimates. It is crucial to note that this catch is almost equivalent to the estimated 29 million tonnes bound for human consumption from the industrial sector. In addition, it was seen that data originating from the FAO underestimates the catch in this sector, which is congruent with qualitative information obtained from the literature search in Chapter 1. Lastly, countries with a low HDI were found to catch more (5.29 t∙km²) per unit area than those that are highly developed (1.76 t∙km²).

Letsoalo, Mokgatsana Lerato Victoria. "The production of silage in small containers for small farmers". Thesis, University of Limpopo, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10386/1442.

Abstract (sommario):
Thesis (M.Sc. (Pasture Science)) --University of Limpopo, 2014
The Limpopo Province is a well known for its warm summers and dry winters. The lack of rainfall in winter causes a shortage of feed for livestock and is responsible for poor animal production and even mortality. Alternatives winter feeding strategies that have been suggested by researchers are planted pastures, crop residues, hay, foggage and silage. Silage in “small container” is the cheapest potential alternative fodder source. This preliminary study investigated the use of small container silage during winter on small scale farms by using Panicum maximum, maize, pearl millet and forage sorghum. Dewageningsdrift (Hygrotech Experimental Farm, Gauteng) was used for this research project. The treatments were four crops (Maize, forage sorghum, pearl millet and Panicum maximum) ensiled in three ensiling techniques (small plastic bags, black plastic bags and buckets). During the first season (2009/2010) the samples were collected in a maturity stage. During second season (2010/2011) the samples were collected in different growing stages (soft dough, hard dough and matured stage). If all quality norms are taken into consideration maize can still be classified as a good silage crop. Silage of similar quality can be produced from forage sorghum and pearl millet. Pearl millet produced relative good quality silage when ensiled in a mature stage. Ensiling in small plastic bags and buckets resulted in good quality silage. There was a trend that buckets resulted in better quality silage when harvested in the hard dough stage. Black refuge plastic bags are not suggested for silage making. Although the quality is lower, silage can be produced from hard dough and mature material, especially with pearl millet in buckets.

Abstract (sommario):
We study the small-z limit of the structure functions for deep inelastic scattering in Quantum Chromodynamics. The standard approach to this process, based on the DGLAP equations, runs into difficulties in the small-x region due to the higher order corrections becoming large. As an attempt to overcome these obstacles we reinterpret the small-z limit in terms of high energy asymptotics. The relevant high energy formalism is developed in terms of Reggeon Field Theory, which leads to the BFKL equation for the scattering amplitude. These results are reviewed fully, for completeness. We then apply the resulting formalism to structure functions at small-z to determine the phenomenological implications of this high energy resummation. The DESY electron-proton collider HERA is presently exploring the region of the structure functions for x ≤ 10(^-3), Q(^2) ~ 10 GeV(^2) and the results of these experiments are compared with our theoretical analysis. The structure functions are a very inclusive measurement; so in order to try and focus on some cleaner indication of the BFKL behaviour we then turn to an analysis of dijet production in deep inelastic scattering. The results of the BFKL formalism are compared with standard analysis in terms of the DGLAP equations.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis is concerned with using micro-level data to examine important features of the process of development which occur on a much larger scale. Using a uniquely long and detailed dataset for a single village in India, allied with data from other sources, we explore what development at the level of a village can tell us about development at the level of a state or country. In the first chapter we introduce the village setting of this thesis - Palanpur, describe the data, and document the broad features of development experienced by the village over the course of 60 years. We focus on changes in employment, education, migration within the village - and relate these to the development of India or other areas where appropriate. The overriding picture is one of a village which has been touched by the outside world. The Green revolution initiated sustained growth in agricultural productivity. Large numbers have moved out of subsistence agriculture into non-agricultural pursuits, many of these outside the village. There have been substantial increases in education, migration, and income levels - similar in magnitude to other areas of India. The second chapter investigates how structural transformation, the reallocation of economic activity from agriculture to manufacturing and services, is experienced for economic entities smaller than countries. Despite a vast macroeconomic literature concerning structural transformation for countries along their development path there is little evidence on the nature of structural transformation at a more microeconomic level. Firstly, we document the stylised facts of structural transformation from the empirical macroeconomic literature. Secondly, we show that these stylised facts are consistent with India's development experience over more than 100 years. We then proceed to document how these empirical facts map onto progressively smaller geographic areas within India. Finally we demonstrate that these features of structural transformation hold true even at the level of a single village in India. The pattern of sectoral reallocation in terms of both income and employment shares is strikingly similar and consistent with the extant stylised facts at all levels. This result has important implications for the way we should think about the complementarity of agricultural and non-agricultural development. The third chapter explores the role of employment networks within the process of development in rural India. The relevant networks we examine are caste and extended family networks, called dynasties. We first establish that there exist job networks in nonagricultural employment for individuals working outside the village. These networks have large effects, and these effects are larger for extended family networks. We then demonstrate that these job networks exhibit competition from fellow network members. As a placebo test we confirm smaller or non-existent network effects for another type of employment believed to be less prone to job referral networks. The second part of this chapter then tests if these dynasty network effects observed for outside employment are consistent with a model of labour market network dynamics. The data are consistent with the model and display both a negative competition effect and a positive information effect. Dynasty network cohorts who arrive in the labour market prior to workers have a positive effect on their employment prospects but those who arrive at the same time have a negative impact. The chapter finishes with some evidence on the potential long run implications of these networks.

Abstract (sommario):
The present research considered the effects of agricultural management practice on the nematode community structure and biomass in three different depths and two successive vegetation periods at an arable field site. The resource quality was manipulated by crop plant and organic amendment, to investigate the major soil carbon pathways based on roots, bacteria and fungi. The nematode community analysis pointed to a highly enriched and disturbed ecosystem with low biodiversity. Along the depth gradient the nematodes formed distinct metacommunities, reflecting resource availability and abiotic environmental factors. Wheat supported significantly greater nematode biomass than maize. The litter amendment induced bottom-up effects, with greater biomass allocation at lower than at higher trophic levels. The biomass of nematode families as well as faunal indices (Channel Index, Enrichment Index) revealed a predominance of the bacterial carbon channel in the arable soil. A 13C pulse-labelling experiment investigating the flux of root- derived C into the soil food web revealed high turnover rates in the fungal carbon pathway. This was evident for soil fungi as well as for fungal-feeding nematodes and contradicts general assumptions of a more active bacterial pathway in arable soils. A laboratory experiment with 14C isotope was used to compile a complete budget for the root-derived carbon in the nematode food web. Here plant-feeding nematodes, which feed on living plant roots, thereby opening the root C cycling into the food web, showed highest amounts of 14C allocation within a few days.

Abstract (sommario):
Employment in small finns has taken on particular importance in Malta, called upon as a new Member State of the European Union to help promote more and better jobs. This thesis examines whether the effects of finn size are also evident in a J?icro-state comprised primarily of small finns, and how the context of a small state in Southern Europe shapesthese effects. Following a brief overview of Malta and its labour market, the literature review is divided into two I?arts. The first looks at job creation and growth in small finns from a small state perspective, focusing in particular on regulation and on how the dynamic of infonnality operates in the principal employment areas of recruitment, family-friendly measures, training and representation. The second part utilises a social capital framework to explore the Maltese context'and how this affects employment in small finns. The fieldwork is presented after an explanation of the methodology. The fieldwork has two main phases. The first quantitative study was conducted among 400 finns stratified by size and sector, and set out to examine whether there exist significant differences' between smaller and larger finns with respect to job creation and the factors that affect it, as well as job quality measures. Significant differences were found, with smaller finns showing less job creation and destruction, more infonnal recruitment, reluctance to recruit women and persons with disability, and lesser degrees of training, representation and participation in social dialogue. The qualitative study was conducted with a sample of twenty eight small finns in different sectors, to better understand the factors in the local context that shape the employment situation in their finns. Analysis of the transcripts suggests that small finns face ten common concerns relating to size, competition, finance, politics, regulation, bureaucracy, association, familism, skills shortage and the work ethic. The fieldwork is followed by a discussion ofhow the quantitative and qualitative findings combine, on the issues of female recruitment, fragmentation, staff shortages, low skill levels, and trust within and between firms. On each issue, a closer analysis is made of current regulation and of changes that may improve the context for small firms. The chapter then examines the issue of targeting and small firms, and the need for evaluation of programmes in the light of policy aims. the concluding chapter reviews the results in the light of the aims, and gives an overview of policy implications. A reflection on the process and outcomes of the thesis is provided, as are the limitations of the thesis and recommendations for further research.

Wu, Da. "Small world, not small competition: does spatial distance among audit partners matter?" Thesis, University of North Texas, 2019. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc1505193/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of my dissertation is to examine whether competition among audit partners affects audit quality. While prior research on audit market competition focuses on audit firm-level or office-level analyses, I argue that audit partners, as the primary decision makers in providing audit services, are likely to engage in competitive actions in the audit market. Further, I use spatial distance among audit partners to measure partner-level competition. I conjecture that spatial distance could better reflect the dynamics of audit market competition than the Herfindahl index, the traditional proxy for competition used in most extant studies. Drawing on the spatial economics theory and the social comparison theory, I hypothesize a negative association between competition measured by spatial distance and the quality level delivered by the incumbent audit partner. Using newly available data of U.S. audit partners, this study provides evidence that audit quality is higher (lower) when the spatial distance between the incumbent partner and the closest competing partner is larger (smaller). In addition, the results reveal that the effects of competition measured by spatial distance on audit quality is mainly a partner-level phenomenon rather than an office-level one. Overall, this study highlights the importance of studying competitive dynamics among audit partners.

Abstract (sommario):
In the Thesis, the problem of associated petroleum gas flaring both in Russia and in the world is revealed. The analysis of associated petroleum gas utilization methods in respect to the small remote oil fields is carried out. The Thesis shows the perspective of creating low and medium power autonomous installations for energy supply to the oil facilities in the remote areas with poorly developed energy infrastructure by processing associated petroleum gas in small-scale GTL technology unit. Taking into account specifics of small remote oil fields, GTL technology scheme was chosen among existing types and its material balance wascalculated. The schemes of both associated petroleum gas utilization and power production on site in the small remote fields were suggested and compared to each other from economical and environmental perspectives. Furthermore, the economic effect from themini-GTL technology introduction into the schemes was defined.

Abstract (sommario):
High-throughput technologies for rapid measurement of vast numbers of biolog- ical variables offer the potential for highly discriminatory diagnosis and prognosis; however, high dimensionality together with small samples creates the need for fea- ture selection, while at the same time making feature-selection algorithms less reliable. Feature selection is required to avoid overfitting, and the combinatorial nature of the problem demands a suboptimal feature-selection algorithm. In this dissertation, we have found that feature selection is problematic in small- sample settings via three different approaches. First we examined the feature-ranking performance of several kinds of error estimators for different classification rules, by considering all feature subsets and using 2 measures of performance. The results show that their ranking is strongly affected by inaccurate error estimation. Secondly, since enumerating all feature subsets is computationally impossible in practice, a suboptimal feature-selection algorithm is often employed to find from a large set of potential features a small subset with which to classify the samples. If error estimation is required for a feature-selection algorithm, then the impact of error estimation can be greater than the choice of algorithm. Lastly, we took a regression approach by comparing the classification errors for the optimal feature sets and the errors for the feature sets found by feature-selection algorithms. Our study shows that it is unlikely that feature selection will yield a feature set whose error is close to that of the optimal feature set, and the inability to find a good feature set should not lead to the conclusion that good feature sets do not exist.

Abstract (sommario):
This research considers the problem of small boat crime, the causes and possible prevention. Marine crime experts have explained the increase in small boat crime as being caused by boat owners' apathy in protecting their vessels. However this has never been substantiated. This investigation examines this explanation and attempts to comprehend the phenomenon of small boat crime and its prevention. Boat owners' apathy is considered in light of their levels of guardianship activities, an element of the Routine Activity theory which places the guardian in the crime event context. The research focuses on four key objectives; the lack of detailed small boat crime knowledge, the issue of apathy related to the crime prevention of boat owners, the un-orchestrated efforts of the boat community to tackle the problem and the wider provision of marine crime prevention. Through the achievement of these objectives a significant innovative work develops to identify recommendations for the boating community to prevent and control the problem. The validation of the explanation is undertaken by the examination of the boating community and environment, as well as the wider consideration of crime by society and by criminology. This is completed by the surveying of boat owners in relation to their crime prevention activities and attitudes in their environment. Through boating community collaboration and examination, this information is corroborated to endorse the research findings and the conclusions of the survey. The investigation provides a potential small boat crime prevention strategy of the boating community. It is significant that boat owners are only one part of the existing boat system. As yet however the issue of small boat crime being a 'boating community' problem has not yet fully been realised by its consi=tituent structure and elements, as no practical community encompassing strategy is in place to stem the growth of crime. The findings depict that the label of 'apathetic guardian' for boat owners is inappropriate. Evidence highlights a complex web of organisation, operation and legislation of the boating community and environment. Consideration of small boat crime and general crime in society are similar, yet society is not labelled apathetic in its prevention of crime. Latterly the Boat Owner Survey highlights the majority of boat owners appreciate this issue, not apathetic to the problem of small boat crime. The validation of the explanation assists in the comprehension of the phenomenon, initiating the possible control of small boat crime in the future.

Abstract (sommario):
Domestic appliances represent very cost conscious applications for drives where the emphasis is on achieving the optimum compromise between cost and performance. The requirements placed on a domestic appliance drive are so radically different from those demanded of an industrial drive, that a detailed re-evaluation of all the constituent sub-units of the drive must be undertaken. Domestic appliances are produced in large volumes so the use of a special arrangement or custom components can be justified if an overall benefit can be demonstrated. The work presented in this dissertation is concerned with small drives which are suitable for domestic appliances. A study of the optimal number of phases for current and possible future power electronic construction methods is presented and their suitability of domestic appliance drives considered. Comparisons based on material utilisation and the quality of the air gap flux waveform are presented. With the power electronic technology available two and three phase drives were found to be the best compromise between cost and complexity, and several drives of each type were built to provide experimental evidence on the performance of each alternative drive topology proposed. The experimental results obtained from the different drives built are related to the conclusions of work on inverter topology and phases number.

An atomistic approach to modeling the sintering of nanocrystalline alloys has been developed. It has been shown that there exist alloys that exhibit both nanostructured stability and undergo an accelerated sintering process [1], [2]. However, the widespread adoption of such alloys has been limited by a lack of understanding of the processing kinetics that lead to the accelerated sintering phenomena. To better understand the role of surface diffusion, and the effect that system enthalpies of mixing have on inter-particle neck formation, a 3D kinetic monte carlo (KMC) model was proposed to study these phenomena. The results of these simulations demonstrate that positive enthalpy of mixing highlighted as a necessary criterion for nanocrystalline stability in [1], also leads to the fast diffusing elements ability to form the interparticle neck. The condition of lower temperature neck formation by fast diffusing alloy elements is hypothesized to be the mechanism behind which accelerated sintering occurs. The findings in this paper demonstrate that positive enthalpy of mixing alloys can be designed to sinter at lower temperatures and shorter cycle durations if they have adequate solute present on the surface of the particle.

Wein, Steven Jay. "Small-angle scatter measurement". Diss., The University of Arizona, 1989. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/184794.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The design, analysis, and performance of a small-angle scatterometer are presented. The effects of the diffraction background, geometrical aberrations and system scatter at the small-angles are separated. Graphs are provided that quantify their contribution. The far-field irradiance distributions of weakly truncated and untruncated Gaussian beams are compared. The envelope of diffraction ringing is shown to decrease proportionately with the level of truncation in the pupil. Spherical aberration and defocus are shown to have little effect on the higher-order diffraction rings of Gaussian apertures and as such will have a negligible effect on most scatter measurements. A method is presented for determining the scattered irradiance level for a given BRDF in relation to the peak irradiance of the point spread function. A method of Gaussian apodization is presented and tested that allows the level of diffraction ringing to become a design parameter. Upon sufficient reduction of the diffraction background, the scattered light from the scatterometers' primary mirror is seen to be the limiting component of the small-angle instrument profile. The scatterometer described was able to make a meaningful measurement close enough to the specular direction at 0.6328μm in order to observe the characteristic height and width of the scatter function. This allowed the rms roughness and autocorrelation length of the surface to be determined from the scatter data at this wavelength. The inferred rms roughness agreed well with an independent optical profilometer measurement of the surface. The BRDF of the samples were also measured at 10.6μm. The rms roughness inferred from this scatter data did not agree with the other measurements. The BRDF did not scale in accordance with the scaler diffraction theory of microrough surfaces. The scattering in the visible was dominated by the effects of surface roughness whereas the scattering in the far-infrared was apparently dominated by the effects of contaminants and surface defects. The model for the surface statistics is investigated. A K₀ (modified Bessel function) autocorrelation function is shown to predict the scattered light distribution of these samples much better than the conventional negative-exponential function. Additionally, a sampling theory is developed that addresses the negative-exponentially correlated output of lock-in amplifiers, detectors, and electronic circuits in general. It is shown that the optimum sampling rate is approximately one sample per time constant and at this rate the improvement in SNR is √(N/2) where N is the number of measurements.

Abstract (sommario):
International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 28-31, 1996 / Town and Country Hotel and Convention Center, San Diego, California
A small PCM telemetry system designed for the flight test telemetry task of a new rotorcraft is introduced in this paper. It can provide a flexible frame format which is completely set up by user in advance, to meet the requirements needed in different flight testing phases. In this telemetry system, the data are low in rate and volume but very valuable with stringent quality and transmission accuracy. Data encrypting and channel encoding techniques are employed to guarantee the quality and security of the data. The system architecture based on microprocessors is adopted in order to process the data flexibly. Real-time data processing, monitoring and post-flight analysis are performed by PC type computers. All key components of the system may be programmed. The cost of the total system integration is relatively reduced.

Harris, Joe Phillip. "Interactions in small complexes". Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2015. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/32555/.

Abstract (sommario):
High-quality potential energy curves (PECs) for several series of M+RG complexes (M = B, Be-Ra, and Zn-Hg, and RG = He-Rn) have been calculated using coupled cluster theory and large basis sets. Spectroscopic constants for these species have been calculated, and using trends in these in conjunction with orbital contour plots, partial atomic charges, and total local energy density analyses, the natures of the interactions are investigated. In general, high binding energies for rare gas complexes were obtained for many of these species. In particular, interactions between the metal cations, B+ and Be+, and the heavier rare gas atoms show very high dissociation energies, with some covalent component to the nature of bonding deduced. The anionic MH- (M = Be-Ra) and RGH- (RG = He-Rn) series are investigated through use of high quality PECs calculated at the coupled cluster level of theory using large basis sets, with spectroscopic constants being subsequently appraised. Dissociation energies in the RGH- series are found to be weak, although reaching moderate values for the heavier rare gases. Conversely, the MH- series possess much higher dissociation energies, especially in the case of BeH-. These differences are discussed in the context of hybridisation on the Group 2 metal centres, and comparison is also made to the isoelectronic BeHe complex. Laser ablation has been employed to produce gas-phase copper atoms suitable for study by resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionisation spectroscopy (REMPI). Since the copper atoms result from an initial copper plasma, many excited electronic states are prepared, which can yield interesting results when studied by electronic spectroscopy. REMPI spectra are presented of transitions from the ground state to the two spin-orbit split components of the low-lying 3d104p state, and to a series of higher lying 3d10nd Rydberg states. Contributions from metastable initial electronic states are also seen, and assignments discussed. Complexes between NO and the alkanes (alkane = methane, ethane, propane, and n-butane) have been studied by REMPI via the A state, where the excitation is localised to the NO molecule. For NO-methane, only the 1:1 complex was observed, but for the longer chain alkanes additional higher-order NO-alkane(n) complexes were observed. Binding energies are deduced for the excited and ground states, and structures for these complexes elucidated, aided by use of ab initio calculations.

Reichenbach, Stephen Edward. "Small-kernel image restoration". W&M ScholarWorks, 1989. https://scholarworks.wm.edu/etd/1539623783.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The goal of image restoration is to remove degradations that are introduced during image acquisition and display. Although image restoration is a difficult task that requires considerable computation, in many applications the processing must be performed significantly faster than is possible with traditional algorithms implemented on conventional serial architectures. as demonstrated in this dissertation, digital image restoration can be efficiently implemented by convolving an image with a small kernel. Small-kernel convolution is a local operation that requires relatively little processing and can be easily implemented in parallel. A small-kernel technique must compromise effectiveness for efficiency, but if the kernel values are well-chosen, small-kernel restoration can be very effective.;This dissertation develops a small-kernel image restoration algorithm that minimizes expected mean-square restoration error. The derivation of the mean-square-optimal small kernel parallels that of the Wiener filter, but accounts for explicit spatial constraints on the kernel. This development is thorough and rigorous, but conceptually straightforward: the mean-square-optimal kernel is conditioned only on a comprehensive end-to-end model of the imaging process and spatial constraints on the kernel. The end-to-end digital imaging system model accounts for the scene, acquisition blur, sampling, noise, and display reconstruction. The determination of kernel values is directly conditioned on the specific size and shape of the kernel. Experiments presented in this dissertation demonstrate that small-kernel image restoration requires significantly less computation than a state-of-the-art implementation of the Wiener filter yet the optimal small-kernel yields comparable restored images.;The mean-square-optimal small-kernel algorithm and most other image restoration algorithms require a characterization of the image acquisition device (i.e., an estimate of the device's point spread function or optical transfer function). This dissertation describes an original method for accurately determining this characterization. The method extends the traditional knife-edge technique to explicitly deal with fundamental sampled system considerations of aliasing and sample/scene phase. Results for both simulated and real imaging systems demonstrate the accuracy of the method.

Fillingim, Wayne A. "Small Business Sustainability Strategies". ScholarWorks, 2018. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/5702.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Small businesses provide 48% of private-sector jobs in the United States and play a vital role in the country's economic growth and development. Only half of U.S. small businesses survive for longer than 5 years. The purpose of this qualitative multiple-case study was to explore sustainability strategies managers of small oilfield service companies used to sustain their business for longer than 5 years. Data were collected from semistructured interviews with 10 managers--one manager from each of 10 different oilfield service companies located in the Rocky Mountain region of the United States and from review of publicly available documents and archived records. The conceptual framework for this study was the dynamic capability theory. Data analysis was conducted using Yin's 5-step data analysis process and methodological triangulation. Four themes emerged from the study: networking or relationship strategies, financial planning strategies, differentiation strategies, and education and experience strategies. The implications of this study for positive social change include the potential for small business managers to use these findings to develop strategies for profitability and sustainability resulting in job creation, poverty reduction, and socioeconomic development.

Dolva, Gun M. "Ecocentrism and small businesses". Thesis, Edith Cowan University, Research Online, Perth, Western Australia, 2023. https://ro.ecu.edu.au/theses/2631.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis explores human and nature relationships in small businesses from a nature-first, ecocentric perspective, and uses the findings to construct a collaborative framework to enhance these relationships. Accordingly, this study fills several gaps identified in emerging literature discussing the importance of understanding human and nature relationships, ecocentrism and the management of pro-environmental practices in small businesses. By framing this thesis within a nature-first perspective, this study responds to the UN conviction that the concept of Harmony with Nature needs to be adopted and non-anthropocentric relationships with nature are necessary to achieve this. To create a suitable conceptual framework for this study, the researcher therefore drew on ecocentric philosophies and a nature-first research approach that aimed to enhance the protection of nature by understanding and improving human and nature relationships. The methodology used involved in-depth interviews with participants from café and construction businesses, followed by thematic analysis of the transcripts. The results were finally triangulated with collaborative learning theories and used to develop a collaborative learning framework that could be used to enhance human and nature relationships in small businesses. The findings demonstrated that while participants were anthropocentric in their perspectives, attitudes, and behaviours about and towards nature, they were also concerned about its destruction, and motivated to do more personally and at work to reduce this destruction. While they were able to act on ideas to reduce their impact on nature in their personal lives, they were however, only able to do so at their workplaces if they had permission. These findings are notable for identifying that lack of action is not necessarily related to knowledge or motivation to act, but rather to having opportunities to act. Participants identified that the main enablers improving their knowledge, motivation, and ability to act included the use of media, individual and group learning, and opportunities to share with and support each other. Findings also revealed that without external support and stakeholder collaboration, small businesses cannot effectively increase their pro-environmental practices. Additionally, an unexpected finding was the identification of eco-grief in the participant cohort, particularly of those in the construction industry. This was associated with individuals witnessing destruction of nature and feeling unable to prevent it occurring. This finding suggests that improving the ability of individuals to act to reduce their harm to nature can also improve mental health at workplaces. Understanding and being able to measure the level of this human and nature emotional relationship is an important area requiring further research, not only academically or to reduce human damage to nature, but also as it offers an innovative tool for the management of organisational cultures. This thesis makes several contributions. First, by focusing on small privately owned businesses, this thesis also contributes to gaps in the understanding and management of ecocentric mindsets and behaviours in such businesses. Second, the evidence based framework, such as that developed in this thesis, has important implications for emerging environmental sustainability debates. Third, this work contributes to emerging academic and practical actions intended to address gaps in this field, including those concerning how to enhance Harmony with Nature perspectives and behaviours. This includes the research methodology of this thesis which shows how ecocentric theory can be coupled with a nature-based approach to identify and classify ecocentric perspectives, attitudes, and behaviours, and what influences these factors.
