Abstract (sommario):
Small business plays an important role in Malaysian business systems. This is because it contributes to the national economic growth by creating job opportunities. As job creators, small businesses must secure access to financial resources but the critical issue surrounding the survival of small businesses is their financial management. Thus, this study approaches small business specifically to examine their financial practices in doing business. This study succeeded in interviewing 185 entrepreneurs in Kedah, which are involved in five different business sectors. These businesses include food and furniture sectors in the manufacturing area; and catering, groceries, and tailoring from the trade and service area. All these businesses represent the most important small businesses that are operating in Kedah. The selection for business practice priorities was done through a fuzzy approach. This approach had been utilised in investigating the linguistic data of business practices. The results showed that updating bookkeeping records is a dominant practice among the entrepreneurs across all sectors, except for the food processing business.

Abstract (sommario):
The article is devoted to solving the urgent problem of creating intelligent big data processing systems for small businesses. The specificity of information flows of small businesses, in particular in the service sector, is shown. The main tasks of increasing the efficiency of small businesses based on digitalization are identified. The methodology of the regularizing Bayesian approach (RBP), Bayesian intelligent measurement technologies (BII) and a digital platform for managing small businesses and creating monitoring and decision support systems are proposed. Based on this platform of the RBP methodology, a working sample of a complex for service enterprises – fitness centers has been developed. The unique properties of an intelligent complex are the possibilities of integrating different types of information, intelligent processing of large data streams in the form of numerical and linguistic information under conditions of considerable uncertainty In the software package for the service sector, various situations can be simulated when working with clients, as well as digital images of clients can be created to personalize work with each of them for the organization of effective and profitable work of small business companies.

Abstract (sommario):
Financial processing is currently widely used for business purposes. The business includes small and medium businesses. With these small and medium businesses, the system used still uses financial processes manually in its processing. As a result, there are often errors in the calculation process as well as income and expenditure. And not the same as the results of the calculation. In this cash processing application system, it can help small and medium entrepreneurs to calculate large amounts of data. And will reduce the error rate. The application model is designed using Finite State Automata. With this model, it can be seen that the value of the design testing process shows that the first and second designs have smaller processing processes compared to the third design. It can be said that to conduct data processing in a large way the third design is more accurate than the first and second. It is hoped that this application can be applied by other small and medium micro-entrepreneurs, and can assist in carrying out a more efficient financial management process.

Abstract (sommario):
Although business analytics is becoming more and more used to provide data-driven insights to support decision making, there is little research on how business analytics may be used at an organizational level to enhance decision making effectiveness. This paper develops a study model linking company analytics to organizational decision-making effectiveness, using the info processing view as well as contingency theory. Based on 740 responses from UK business organizations, the research model is examined using structural situation modelling. Key findings show that business analytics can be done through key findings. Mediating a data driven environment positively affects information processing abilities, which have a good impact on decision-making effectiveness in turn. The findings also show that the pathways from company analytics to decision making are obvious. There are no statistical differences between large and small businesses, but several differences between the manufacturing and professional services industries. Our findings add to the literature on business analytics by offering helpful insights into company analytics applications and the facilitation of data driven decision making. They also improve the knowledge and understanding of managers by showing how business analytics needs to be applied to improve decision making effectiveness.

Abstract (sommario):
Enabling business users to directly query their data sources is a significant advantage for organisations. The majority of enterprise data is housed within databases, requiring extensive procedures that involve intermediary layers for reporting and its related customization. The concept of enabling natural language queries, where a chatbot can interpret user questions into database queries and promptly return results, holds promise for expediting decision-making and enhancing business responsiveness. This approach empowers experienced users to swiftly obtain data-driven insights. The integration of Text-to-SQL and Large Language Model (LLM) capabilities represents a solution to this challenge, offering businesses a powerful tool for query automation. However, security concerns prevent organizations from granting direct database access akin to platforms like OpenAI. To address this limitation, this Paper proposes developing fine-tuned small/medium LLMs tailored to specific domains like retail and supply chain. These models would be trained on domain-specific questions and Queries that answer these questions based on the database table structures to ensure efficacy and security. A pilot study is undertaken to bridge this gap by fine-tuning selected LLMs to handle business-related queries and associated database structures, focusing on sales and supply chain domains. The research endeavours to experiment with zero-shot and fine-tuning techniques to identify the optimal model. Notably, a new dataset is curated for fine-tuning, comprising business-specific questions pertinent to the sales and supply chain sectors. This experimental framework aims to evaluate the readiness of LLMs to meet the demands for business query automation within these specific domains. The study contributes to the progression of natural language query processing and database interaction within the realm of business intelligence applications.

Mallalieu, Gillian Margaret. "A critical approach to business process modelling in small to medium sized enterprizes". Thesis, Durham University, 2003. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/1078/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The research issue for this thesis was founded within the RAMESES project, but is specifically concerned with the necessity for SMEs to undertake the activity of business process modelling. The need to understand the `as is' position of an organisation is fundamental to the development, change or implementation of any information or communication technologies (ICT). The primary research question was `are SMEs able to model business processes in such a way that will enable the effective analysis of the organisation in order to enable information systems development change or implementation'. The objective of the research was to develop a method by which this business process modelling activity could be supported in a fashion which was accessible and effective within the target environment. This thesis expounds the benefits of using a critical approach utilizing a combination of qualitative and quantitative research methods within the bounds of a multi-disciplinary research team to enable effective exploration and investigation. The concept of the research life-cycle has developed the notion of appropriateness in method and approach: this is discussed against the values of the critical and realist paradigms. The issues reported in this thesis have been identified as a result of detailed case study analysis of six small organisations in the North-east of England. The conclusions are presented in three sections firstly the conclusions relating to the SME and the appropriateness of the BAM technique developed within the RAMESES project. Secondly conclusions are given in regard to the research methodology and reflections given as to the efficacy of the process. Thirdly reflections and conclusions are presented that relate to the work in relation to its overall critical aims and finally makes suggestions as to how future work could be improved.

Thesis (MTech (Information and Technology))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2016.
It has been shown that the South African insurance landscape takes up an important place in the African continent, contributing nearly three quarters of the total African insurance sector (Paul, Twala & Marwala, 2012). The industry landscape has shown development at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 11.7% between 2004 and 2008. The life insurance industry is assumed to grow at a CAGR of 8.3%. Small, medium and micro-sized enterprises (SMMEs) are important role players in every economy and provide a major contribution to the gross domestic product (GDP) and employment. Many South African enterprises have in the past focused on local markets, but more recently SMMEs have been forced to respond to competition in the global market as markets expand. The role of SMMEs is considered critical in terms of poverty alleviation, employment creation, and international competitiveness. However, resource limitations have made it difficult for many SMMEs to enter new markets and compete effectively. The effective application of information systems (IS) are viewed as a way for SMMEs to become more competitive and drive business benefits such as cost reduction, improved profitability, enhanced customer service, new market growth opportunities, and more efficient operating relationships with trading customers and partners. There are an increasing number of new opportunities and competition in the marketplace because of business globalisation. The marketplace and business globalisation dynamics have a major influence on SMMEs and their operations. SMMEs require a critical evaluation of their internal processes and seek out solutions to be able to sustain their growth and competitiveness. This research study adopted an inductive approach to describe the rational process of establishing a general proposition on the basis of observing particular facts. An in-depth case study is used to explore the multiple perspectives of the complexity and uniqueness of SMMEs. One-on-one interviews were conducted to collect data from 17 financial advisors using an interview guide with semi-structured questionnaires. The data were analysed through the process of thematic coding which is common in case study research, and labels were assigned to form and organise the themes in groups and categories. Ethical consideration was presented before data collection commenced, and the autonomy, self-respect and human dignity of all respondents during the data collection process were considered. The findings reveal that financial service providers (FSPs) have a different understanding of IS, what competitive means, and what it can do for a business.

Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of this study was to investigate and report on the impact and effectiveness of a Small Business Development Center consulting program. The consulting program consisted of two individualized, self-paced, interactive computer courseware sets which were designed to deliver information about business computer systems to small business owners. The study was descriptive and exploratory in nature, utilizing a pre- and post-experience application of an attitudinal instrument. The participants were small business owners in Indiana. The primary research question related to the impact that the Indiana Small Business Development Center computer assistance consulting program had upon the attitudes of small business owners toward computers in their firms. The attitude of the participants toward computers was positive prior to the experience and remained so after the experience. Other major findings regarding small business owners' perceptions of the consulting program were as follows:1. Nearly 90 percent of the participants indicated that an individualized, self-paced, interactive computer courseware set was a useful way to obtain instruction about business computer systems, and 96.2 percent indicated that they would recommend the program under investigation to other small business owners.2. Although the majority of the participants had not used an integrated software package that contains word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications under one software umbrella prior to this study, following their interaction with the courseware sets almost 74 percent indicated that an integrated package would be practical for their businesses.3. Almost all (96.2 percent) of the participants found a graphical user interface to be useful in helping them understand the computer software.4. Participants preferred to use business associates and seminars or courses as sources of information for learning about computers for their firms, but lack of time prevents them from learning as much as they would like. Results of this study indicate that as adult learners, small business owners are a fragmented population, and therefore difficult to reach via traditional adult education programs. More emphasis by government and educational institutions on providing small business owners with training and education regarding computers and more research conducted in developing programs are suggested.

Abstract (sommario):
The 21st century is an age of conducting business electronically. The benefits of dealing electronically with customers, suppliers, government and others is a fact that will continue the push towards further use of digital technology. This research work aims to address the following research question. How can a small to medium size enterprise (SME)etransform to be competitive in a globalised, rapidly changing, digital world? There are two components to this question; firstly the nature of competitiveness in a globalised environment, and secondly, the issue of how an orgaisation can etransform. The background material investigated at the initiation of this work can be broadly categorised into two types (1)theoretical possibilities; proposing 'potential' uses of internet technologies and (2)case studies reporting on existing ebusinesses. A detailed literature review of eBusiness was conducted to discover what made these organisations different from a traditional business. The next phase in this research work involved development of the eTransformation Roadmap, a tool that served two purposes. Firstly, to measure the current Information Technology sophistication of a business. Secondly, to show the steps that an organisation can take to become an eBusiness. The Roadmap was also used to analyse data collected from a survey of Western Sydney businesses. Overall, this research has provided a holistic view of how an organisation can transform itself to compete in a rapidly changing, digital world.

Abstract (sommario):
Thesis (MTech (Business Administration))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2017.
Introduction The research looked at the application of project management tools and techniques in ICT SME projects in the Western Cape. Problem Statement Previous literature revealed that small to medium enterprises (SMEs) are vital to developing economies as they provide employment and contribute to overall sustainable economic productivity. Literature further alludes that project management tools and techniques enhance SME’s ability to innovate, grow and compete in industry. However, it is unclear if ICT SMEs in Western Cape are applying project management tools and techniques in their projects. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate whether ICT SMEs in Western Cape applied these tools and techniques in their projects. Aims / Objectives The primary objective of the research was to determine the extent to which ICT SMEs in Western Cape were using project management tools and techniques. The secondary research objectives were: to determine the extent to which ICT SMEs in Western Cape knew about the project management tools and techniques and how to use them; to establish the extent to which the ICT SMEs knew the benefits of using project management tools and techniques; and to determine the extent to which project management tools and techniques were used by SMEs to achieve success. Methodology The research was non experimental. An electronic questionnaire was distributed using Survey Monkey and Mail Chimp to collect responses. Some questionnaires were hand delivered to ICT SMEs based in the Cape Town CBD areas accessible to the researcher. The results presented in the research were based on a survey of ICT SMEs, located in Western Cape. Out of the 341 responses targeted a total of 210 responses were obtained. The results obtained represent 60- 70% of the population interviewed. The sample was chosen using stratified random sampling that classified the respondents according to organisational hierarchy, and the amount per strata was noted. The respondents within each stratum were chosen using simple random sampling thus eliminating bias.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis is written at the department of Business Studies at Uppsala University. The study addresses the differences in possibilities and difficulties of implementing business intelligence (BI)-systems among small IT-enterprises. BI-systems support enterprises in decision-making. To answer the aim of this thesis, theories regarding organizational factors determining a successful implementation of a BI-system were used. Theories regarding components of BI- systems, data warehouse (DW) and online analytical processing (OLAP) were also used. These components enable the decision-support provided by a BI-system. A qualitative study was performed, at four different IT-enterprises, to gather the empirical material. Interviews were performed with CEOs and additional employees at the enterprises. After the empirical material was gathered an analysis was performed to draw conclusion regarding the research topic. The study has concluded that there are differences in possibilities and difficulties of implementing BI-systems among small IT-enterprises. A difference among the enterprises is the perceived ability to finance an implementation. Another difference is in the managerial- and organizational support of an implementation, but also in the business need of using a BI- system in decision-making. There are also differences in how the enterprises use a DW. Not all enterprises benefits from the ability of a DW to manage complex and large amounts of data, neither from the advanced analysis performed by OLAP. The enterprises thus need to examine further if the use of a BI-system is beneficial and would be used successfully in their company.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractWith the advent of Industry 4.0, increasing amounts of data on operational processes (e.g., manufacturing processes) become available. These processes can involve hundreds of different materials for a relatively small number of manufactured special-purpose machines rendering classical process discovery and analysis techniques infeasible. However, in contrast to most standard business processes, additional structural information is often available—for example, Bills of Materials (BOMs), listing the required materials, or Multi-level Manufacturing Bills of Materials (M2BOMs), which additionally show the material composition. This work investigates how structural information given by Multi-level Bills of Materials (M2BOMs) can be integrated into a top-down operational process analysis framework to improve special-purpose machine manufacturing processes. The approach is evaluated on industrial-scale printer assembly data provided by Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractEvent logs capture information about executed activities. However, they do not capture information about activities that could have been performed, i.e., activities that were enabled during a process. Event logs containing information on enabled activities are called translucent event logs. Although it is possible to extract translucent event logs from a running information system, such logs are rarely stored. To increase the availability of translucent event logs, we propose two techniques. The first technique records the system’s states as snapshots. These snapshots are stored and linked to events. A user labels patterns that describe parts of the system’s state. By matching patterns with snapshots, we can add information about enabled activities. We apply our technique in a small setting to demonstrate its applicability. The second technique uses a process model to add information concerning enabled activities to an existing traditional event log. Data containing enabled activities are valuable for process discovery. Using the information on enabled activities, we can discover more correct models.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractThis paper explores the connection between agile methods and digital customer experience, aiming to identify what are the hallmarks of a good agile way of working. The research is an exploratory case study consisting of interviews and analysis. In summary, the research suggests that the hallmarks of a good agile way of working are 1) breaking down tasks into sufficiently small pieces, 2) defining tasks precisely and releasing them to production evenly, 3) continuous improvement, and 4) good planning of sprints. These good agile operating methods can be seen in the development measures as a short lead time, a short time to export to production, low errors, and a high deployment frequency. According to the findings, these metrics are linked to the Net Promoter Score (NPS), a measure of customer experience. A team with sufficient technical capabilities team that utilizes agile operating methods is able to produce the desired things for customers at exactly the right time while constantly improving, so that the NPS is positive, and its direction is improving. On the other hand, the team’s bad operating methods are also visible in the NPS meter – in this case, the NPS fluctuates strongly. Teams can obtain insightful supplementary data about their own practices by keeping track of development measures.

The integration of Textto-SQL and Large Language Model (LLM) capabilities represents a solution to this challenge, offering businesses a powerful tool for query automation.

Abstract (sommario):
Industry 4.0 adoption is expected to profoundly impact the entire spectrum of industries, especially in manufacturing. By using a confluence of automation, data, and digitalisation, Industry 4.0 aims to radically transform how organisations operate presently while increasing productivity, enhancing flexibility, reducing costs, and improving efficiency. More companies are strategically embracing Industry 4.0 approaches to leverage opportunities arising from newly connected computers and increasingly autonomous automation systems (e.g., robotics), equipped with intelligent machine learning algorithms that control the robotics without much human input. In these 'smart' factories, cyber-physical systems (i.e., independently operating systems that self-optimize and communicate with each other, and ultimately optimize production) monitor the physical manufacturing processes and play an increasingly important role in terms of decision-making. Industry 4.0 signifies three mutually interconnected factors, namely digitisation and integration of any technical-economic networks, digitisation of products and services, and new market models. At the core of this new smart manufacturing paradigm is the Internet of Things that drives the conversion of traditional factories into a 'smart' manufacturing environment called "Industry 4.0", resulting in an increasingly intelligent, connected, and autonomous factory with dynamic capabilities. Smart manufacturing technologies include big data processing, machine learning, advanced robotics, cloud computing, sensors technology, additive manufacturing, and augmented reality. By using predictive big data analytics, deep learning, or sentiment/image analysis, business leaders can identify patterns and trends in vast reams of big data. It allows them to make 'smarter' decisions (e.g., about the loss of customers or the necessary service inspection of equipment) and potentially to become more competitive in real-time. Based on case study research on small manufacturing firms in Singapore, we explore how local SMEs adopt Industry 4.0 solutions. We shed light on the drivers and barriers of Industry 4.0 adoption to better understand current business dynamics, potential human issues, focus areas, and initiatives to smoothen this implementation. The study is part of a wider Industry 4.0 study of key specialists and decision-makers across Government agencies, Institutes of Higher Learnings, suppliers of Industry 4.0 technology, business associations, etc. Technology push by the Government with robust funding and training support, skilled labour shortages including imported labour dependence, productivity issues and the pressure to innovate business models due to increased competition are propelling SMEs to adopt Industry 4.0. Some challenges include high investment costs, ROI concerns as well as capability and mindset issues. The paper contributes to the minimal Asian management literature about Industry 4.0 matters in Asian SMEs.

Abstract (sommario):
Research into artificial intelligence is not a very young field; its precursors can be traced back as far as the 16th century. Today's technical development, however, is virtually leaping forward, with new intelligent chat systems and social robots playing no small part in this. This is revolutionizing a wide range of scientific and social fields. The very large publication numbers in this field illustrate this as well. In order for academics and scientists to keep track of the discourse in the field, the representatives of the field, the publications as well as the topics and their future development, it is indispensable to prepare these in a bibliometric analysis. Only in this way is it possible to uncover thematic gaps as well as further points of contact and to drive research forward in a targeted and stringent manner. It is precisely this sorting and processing of the research discourse, the topics, and the authors, which is necessary for further research, that is carried out in this paper. For this purpose, using bibliometric analysis tools, an overview of the past, present and future of the research field is created, and the general relevant topics are uncovered. The analysis includes as performance analysis a) the total number of publications and b) the total number of citations, and for science mapping c) a co-citation analysis (past), d) a bibliographic coupling (present) and e) a co-word analysis (future). The data needed for the analysis are identified and extracted from the SCOPUS or Web of Science (ISI) databases.

Abstract (sommario):
For traditional product manufacturers, digital transformation of products and services means dealing with challenges with which they have not dealt before. Especially the different measures to be taken on a business, organizational, technical and IT level and the competencies needed when advancing from traditional to smart products and services are often unclear for strategists in those companies. In our work, focusing on the early phase of smartification, we propose a support method for small and medium sized enterprises to formulate an ambitious product vision and derive a path of useful steps to go ahead from a traditional product without smart elements to the developed product vision using a scenario based approach. Our scenario framework was developed by analyzing and clustering characteristics of appropriate approaches resulting from a literature review, using two fundamentally different approaches which either develop products with a business model or a technical/functional perspective. In order to apply and support the product development with a maturity model of smartifying product service systems, the two different approaches were merged for elaborating a common product vision and three essential steps leading the path towards the vision. Starting with a product having no smart components, in the first step the product and services are digitalized and connectivity is added. The second step covers, next to further smart components, the enhancement of using AI technology in data processing. The third step brings innovative business models into play.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper describes a flexible, widely applicable sensor health monitoring system, as developed in partnership with Northrop Grumman Ship Systems (NGSS) under a small business innovative research contract for the US Navy. Traditional signal processing techniques were employed in conjunction with data driven models and fault identification and classification techniques to provide a robust analysis of sensor health. Key aspects of the system include: • Analysis of both high and low bandwidth data; • Modules that assess a sensor’s performance on an individual basis. These are designed to detect noise, incipient faults, spiking and signal dropout; • Modules that assess a sensor’s performance from an overall system perspective, enabling early identification of sensor drift and calibration issues; • Algorithms for high bandwidth signals designed to detect clipping, abnormal signal mean and range, and signal shape anomalies that enable identification of certain mechanical and electrical failures; • Mode detection algorithms that enable dynamic weighting of calculated health parameters in order to mitigate false alarms and missed detects; • Fusion algorithms that combine and interpret the output from the aforementioned modules, to provide estimates of overall sensor health and failure mode. The system’s capabilities were exercised on 1) laboratory datasets generated in-house with implanted faults, 2) data from tests conducted on the power distribution system driven by a Rolls-Royce MT30 gas turbine slated to power the Navy’s DDG1000 destroyer, and 3) from a low pressure air compressor (LPAC) found on legacy Navy weapons systems. The ability to detect and classify various electrical faults, issues related to calibration, and certain mechanical failures was validated. The system is suitable for offline mining of historical data, embedded on-line monitoring, and for application in distributed computing networks.

Abstract (sommario):
The COVID-19 pandemic has led to an explosion of research using private-sector datasets to measure business dynamics and employment in real-time. Yet questions remain about the representativeness of these datasets and how to distinguish business openings and closings from sample churn – i.e., sample entry of already operating businesses and sample exits of businesses that continue operating. This paper proposes new methods to address these issues and applies them to the case of Homebase, a real-time dataset of mostly small service-sector sector businesses that has been used extensively in the literature to study the effects of the pandemic. We match the Homebase establishment records with information on business activity from Safegraph, Google, and Facebook to assess the representativeness of the data and to estimate the probability of business closings and openings among sample exits and entries. We then exploit the high frequency / geographic detail of the data to study whether small service-sector businesses have been hit harder by the pandemic than larger firms, and the extent to which the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) helped small businesses keep their workforce employed. We find that our real-time estimates of small business dynamics and employment during the pandemic are remarkably representative and closely fit population counterparts from administrative data that have recently become available. Distinguishing business closings and openings from sample churn is critical for these results. We also find that while employment by small businesses contracted more severely in the beginning of the pandemic than employment of larger businesses, it also recovered more strongly thereafter. In turn, our estimates suggests that the rapid rollout of PPP loans significantly mitigated the negative employment effects of the pandemic. Business closings and openings are a key driver for both results, thus underlining the importance of properly correcting for sample churn.

The COVID-19 pandemic will leave an enduring mark on North Carolina’s small business community. Using a phenomenological framework, we conducted a series of in-depth semi-structured interviews with small business owners about how they addressed the pandemic’s challenges. Four central themes emerged that illustrate the complexity and nuance of small business resiliency. Our data suggest that to survive and thrive, entrepreneurs had to: (1) be adaptable and willing to pivot, (2) have an entrepreneurial spirit, (3) leverage their social capital, and (4) have the knowledge and ability to apply for aid programs.

Abstract (sommario):
In times of crisis, investment in entrepreneurial ventures tends to decline. Early data suggest the decline in small business investments due to the pandemic will be historic in scope and depth. Community development lending practices aim to sustain small firms until they can resume their normal course of business. Affordable financing provides capital injections into small businesses which can help to cushion against COVID-19 induced economic shocks. Using Carolina Small Business Development Fund’s lending data as a case study, this analysis considers the effect of COVID-19 response programs. These activities are oriented towards creating a “social safety net” of Main Street businesses that boost social capital development, community trust, and financial stability. We believe the findings are likely generalizable to lending activities by other community development financial institutions.

Abstract (sommario):
This report presents findings on the experiences of small businesses seeking credit from online lenders, based on data from the 2021 Small Business Credit Survey (SBCS). According to findings, firms that apply to online lenders are more likely to be newer and have fewer employees, lower revenues, and weaker credit scores. In addition, Black- and Hispanic-owned firms are more likely than white- and Asian-owned firms to report that they applied to an online lender. Furthermore, contrary to prior SBCS findings, online-lender applicants were less likely than bank applicants to be approved for the full amount of financing they sought. Generally, online-lender applicants reported lower overall satisfaction with their lenders than did bank applicants. Overall, approved applicants cited fewer challenges with their lender experiences than did applicants that were denied. The only exception was at online lenders, where approved applicants were more likely than denied applicants to cite challenges with high interest rates and unfavorable repayment terms.

Abstract (sommario):
Business failure is a natural part of the development lifecycle. In a healthy economy, the formations and dissolutions of small firms drive innovation through the process of creative destruction. However, an excessive level of involuntary closures lowers both economic mobility and community social capital. We partnered with the North Carolina Secretary of State’s Office (NCSOS) to identify factors that might be driving involuntary firm closures using administrative data. This analysis outlines our recommendation to use an exploratory open-ended survey instrument which targets dissolved firm owners. We believe the methodology is indicated due to the inherent challenges of getting survey data from this population. With a relatively small number of responses, an open-ended survey would allow for a hybrid-thematic analysis framework which combines a data-driven inductive approach with a deductive theoretical (a priori) template of codes. Our recommended analysis lens complements phenomenological qualitative inquiry by connecting the respondent’s open-ended answers to theories in the business failure literature.
