Abstract (sommario):
Isospin symmetry breaking effects on the mass-radius relation of a cold, non-accreting neutron star are studied on the basis of two Skyrme Energy Density Functionals (EDFs). One functional contains isospin symmetry breaking terms other than those typically included in Skyrme EDFs while its counterpart is of standard form. Both functionals are based on the same fitting protocol except for the observables and pseudo-observables sensitive to the isospin symmetry breaking channel. The quality of those functionals is similar in the description of terrestrial observables but choosing either of them has a non-negligible effect on the mass-radius relation and tidal deformability of a neutron star. Further investigations are needed to clarify the effects of isospin symmetry breaking on these and other observables of neutron stars that are, and will become, available.

Abstract (sommario):
We study geometric variational problems for a class of nonlinear σ-models in quantum field theory. Mathematically, one needs to minimize an energy functional on homotopy classes of maps from closed 3-manifolds into compact homogeneous spaces G/H. The minimizers are known as Hopfions and exhibit localized knot-like structure. Our main results include proving existence of Hopfions as finite energy Sobolev maps in each (generalized) homotopy class when the target space is a symmetric space. For more general spaces, we obtain a weaker result on existence of minimizers in each 2-homotopy class. Our approach is based on representing maps into G/H by equivalence classes of flat connections. The equivalence is given by gauge symmetry on pullbacks of G → G/H bundles. We work out a gauge calculus for connections under this symmetry, and use it to eliminate non-compactness from the minimization problem by fixing the gauge.

Abstract (sommario):
Self-consistent theory frameworks have been introduced for description of excitations in nuclei at finite temperature, based on energy density functionals formulated using i) relativistic mean field Lagrangian with density dependent meson-nucleon vertex functions, and ii) Skyrme-type functionals. Finite temperature random phase approximation (FTRPA) has been employed in description of multipole excitations and charge-exchange modes. It is shown that in the temperature range T = 1–2 MeV additional transition strength appears at low energies due to thermal unblocking of single-particle orbitals close to the Fermi level. Within the finite temperature Hartree-Fock+RPA based on Skyrme functionals, the electron capture cross sections have been studied for target nuclei at temperatures relevant in modeling the supernova evolution.

Abstract (sommario):
The nuclear structure community is striving to determine a nuclear energy functional which is as universal and as accurate as possible. When a functional is determined by fitting free parameters, the constraints on these parameters coming from excited states (like the well-known giant resonances) are not, as a rule, imposed. This work shows that at least three constraints could be imposed on Skyrme functionals, by explaining the physical background and discussing their relevance.

Abstract (sommario):
We discuss the properties of nucleons in nuclear matter and the properties of nucleonic systems in the framework of an in-medium modified Skyrme Lagrangian. The modification is achieved by introducing the medium functionals into the original Skyrme Model Lagrangian in free space[Formula: see text]. The parameters of the medium functionals are related to the low density phenomenology (i.e. to the pionic atoms3) from the one side and to the properties of nuclear matter at the saturation density [Formula: see text] from the other side. After fitting the parameters of the model, the extrapolations into the low density and high density regions showed that the model can successfully describe the Equations of State (EoS) of nuclear matter in the wide range of densities including the high critical densities existing in the interiors of neutron stars.

Abstract (sommario):
Nuclear effective interactions are often modeled by simple analytical expressions such as the Skyrme zero-range force. This effective interaction depends on a limited number of parameters that are usually fitted using experimental data obtained from doubly magic nuclei. It was recently shown that many Skyrme functionals lead to the appearance of instabilities, in particular when symmetries are broken, for example unphysical polarization of odd–even or rotating nuclei. In this paper, we show how the formalism of the linear response in infinite nuclear matter can be used to predict and avoid the regions of parameters that are responsible for these unphysical instabilities.

Abstract (sommario):
In the framework of axial symmetric relativistic Hartree–Bogoliubov (RHB) theory and the Skyrme Hartree–Fock–Bogoliubov (HFB) theory, the evolution of shell structure, density distribution, and ground state deformation in superheavy nuclei proximate to N=258 are investigated within the relativistic functionals DD-PC1 and DD-ME2, as well as the non-relativistic functional UNEDF0. The results from DD-ME2 and UNEDF0 indicate that N=258 is a neutron magic number, whereas DD-PC1 does not anticipate the existence of a bound N=258 magic nucleus. Further discussion suggests that the emergence of the magic number N=258 is related to the depression of the central density.

Abstract (sommario):
Motivated by the interrelationships found between the various symmetry energy elements of the energy density functionals (EDF) based on the Skyrme forces, possible correlations among them are explored. A total of 237 Skyrme EDFs are used for this purpose. As some of these EDFs yield values of a few nuclear observables far off from the present acceptable range, studies are done also with a subset of 162 EDFs that comply with a conservative set of constraints on the values of nuclear matter incompressibility coefficient, effective mass of the nucleon and the isovector splitting of effective nucleon masses to see the enhancement of the correlation strength, if any. The curvature parameter [Formula: see text] and the skewness parameter [Formula: see text] of the symmetry energy are found to be very well correlated with the linear combination of the symmetry energy coefficient and its density derivative [Formula: see text]. The isovector splitting of the effective nucleon mass, however, displays a somewhat meaningful correlation with a linear combination of the symmetry energy, its slope and its curvature parameter.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract The charge-exchange subtracted second random-phase approximation, based on Skyrme functionals, is employed to investigate the Gamow-Teller resonances in several nuclei, located in different regions of the nuclear chart. The amount of Gamow-Teller strength is considerably smaller than in other energy-density-functional based calculations and agrees better with the experimental data. These important results, obtained without any ad hoc quenching factors, are due to the inclusion of two-particle–two-hole configurations. Their density progressively increases with excitation energy, leading to a long high-energy tail in the spectrum. This result may have implications for the computation of nuclear matrix elements for neutrinoless double-beta decay in the same framework.

AbstractWe study the impact of a hadron-quark phase transition on the maximum neutron-star mass. The hadronic part of the equation of state relies on the most up-to-date Skyrme nuclear energy density functionals, fitted to essentially all experimental nuclear mass data and constrained to reproduce the properties of infinite nuclear matter as obtained from microscopic calculations using realistic forces. We show that the softening of the dense matter equation of state due to the phase transition is not necessarily incompatible with the existence of massive neutron stars like PSR J1614–2230.

Abstract (sommario):
Calculations for infinite nuclear matter with realistic nucleon-nucleon interactions suggest that the isoscalar effective mass (IEM) of a nucleon at the saturation density equals m*/m ~ 0.8 ± 0.1, at variance with empirical data on the nuclear level density in finite nuclei which are consistent with m*/m ≈ 1. This contradicting results might be reconciled by enriching the radial dependence of IEM. In this work four new terms are introduced into the Skyrme-force inspired local energy-density functional: τ(∇ρ)2, [Formula: see text], τ2 and τ∆ρ. The aim is to investigate how they influence the radial dependence of IEM and, in turn, the single-particle spectra.

Abstract (sommario):
The equation of state of asymmetric nuclear matter as well as the neutron and proton effective masses and their partial-wave and spin–isospin decomposition are analyzed within the Brueckner–Hartree–Fock approach. Theoretical uncertainties for all these quantities are estimated by using several phase-shift-equivalent nucleon–nucleon forces together with two types of three-nucleon forces, phenomenological and microscopic. It is shown that the choice of the three-nucleon force plays an important role above saturation density, leading to different density dependencies of the energy per particle. These results are compared to the standard form of the Skyrme energy density functional, and we find that it is not possible to reproduce the BHF predictions in the (S,T) channels in symmetric and neutron matter above saturation density, already at the level of the two-body interaction, and even more including the three-body interaction.

Abstract (sommario):
We study the structure of vortices and their interaction with nuclei in the inner crust of neutron stars. Vortices carry most of the angular momentum of the crust and according to some models are expected to play a key role in the phenomenon of glitches. The quantities of interest (the energy, the pairing gap, the density and the velocity field) are calculated in the framework of the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) quantum mean field theory. We solve the HFB equations testing four different Skyrme functionals in the particle hole-channel and using a density-dependent contact interaction in the particle-particle channel. We find that the structure of a vortex is strongly affected by the presence of the nucleus, a fact which reflects itself in the density dependence of the pinning energy we calculate.

Abstract (sommario):
The ground-state properties of superfluid nuclear systems with 1S0 pairing are studied within a local energy-density functional (LEDF) approach. A new form of the LEDF is proposed with a volume part which fits the Friedman-Pandharipande and Wiringa-Fiks-Fabrocini equation of state at low and moderate densities and allows an extrapolation to higher densities which preserves causality. For inhomogeneous systems, a surface term is added, with two free parameters, which has a fractional form like a Padé approximant containing the square of the density gradient in both the numerator and denominator. In addition to the direct and exchange Coulomb interaction energy, an effective density-dependent Coulomb-nuclear correlation term is included with one more free parameter. A three-parameter fit to the masses and radii of about 100 spherical nuclei has shown that the latter term gives a contribution of the same order of magnitude as the Nolen-Schiffer anomaly in the Coulomb displacement energy. The root-mean-square deviations from experimental masses and radii with the proposed LEDF come out about a factor of two smaller than those obtained with the conventional functionals based on the Skyrme or finite-range Gogny force, or on relativistic mean-field theory. The generalized variational principle is formulated leading to the self-consistent Gor'kov equations which are sovled exactly, with physical boundary conditions both for the bound and scattering states. The method is used to calculate the differential observables such as odd-even mass differences and staggering in charge radii. With a zero-range density-dependent cutoff pairing interaction incorporating a density-gradient term, the evolution of these observables is reproduced reasonably well, including the kinks at magic neutron numbers and the sizes of the associated staggering. An extrapolation from the pairing properties of finite nuclei to pairing in infinite nuclear matter is discussed. A "reference" value of the pairing gap ΔF≈ 3.3 MeV is found for subsaturated nuclear matter at about 0.65 of the equilibrium density. With the formulated LEDF approach, we study also the dilute limit in both the weak and strong coupling regimes. Within the sum rules approach it is shown that the density-dependent pairing may also induce sizeable staggering and kinks in the evolution of the mean energies of multipole excitations.

Abstract (sommario):
Using a modified energy density functional of nuclear matter derived by solving the Bethe–Goldstone equation with a realistic nucleon–nucleon interaction and by including corrections due to relativistic and three-body effects, an effective Skyrme parameter set is derived. These corrections are found to be important in order to well describe the saturation properties of nuclear matter. The obtained Skyrme parameter set, which we denoted by SKRA, is found to better account for nuclear correlations and satisfactory describes finite nuclei, when used in the Skyrme–Hartree–Fock theory. The SKRA interaction can also be considered as an important step toward removing the ambiguities in the determination of Skyrme parameters.

Several Skyrme forces for both the nucleon–nucleon (NN) and Λ-nucleon (ΛN) interactions are used. The influence of pairing strengths on the polarization effect of Λ hyperon is also examined. It is found that although these Skyrme forces with different pairing strengths give somewhat different low-lying spectra for 44 S , all of them give similar and generally small size of Λ reduction effect (within 5%) on the collective properties.

A specific three-peak structure of the spin-flip response is found and explained by particular neutron and proton spin-flip transitions. Although the employed forces provide an acceptable qualitative description, the Skyrme functional still needs further improvement to reproduce quantitatively the experiment for spin modes.

Abstract (sommario):
Systematic calculations of favored signature maximum-spin Imax and unfavored signature Imax - 1 terminating states for [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] configurations (n denotes number of valence particles) in A~44 mass region are presented. Following the result of Zduńczuk et al., Phys. Rev. C58 (2005) 024305 the calculations are performed using Skyrme energy density functional with empirical Landau parameters and slightly reduced spin-orbit strength. The aim is to identify and phenomenologically restore rotational symmetry broken by the Skyrme-Hartree-Fock solutions. In particular, it is shown that correlation energy due to symmetry restoration is absolutely crucial in order to reproduce energy splitting E(Imax) - E(Imax - 1) in [Formula: see text] configurations but is relatively less important for [Formula: see text] configurations.

Abstract (sommario):
Time-odd densities and their effect on electric giant resonances are investigated within the self-consistent separable random-phase-approximation (SRPA) for a variety of Skyrme forces (SkT6, SkO, SkM*, SIII, SGII, SLy4, SLy6, SkI3). Time-odd densities are essential for maintaining the Galilean invariance of the Skyrme functional. Their contribution is determined by the values and signs of the isovector and isoscalar effective-mass parameters of the force. In even-even nuclei these densities are not active in the ground state but can affect the dynamics. As a particular case, we explore the role of the current density in the description of isovector E1 and isoscalar E2 giant resonances in a chain of spherical and deformed Nd isotopes with A=134-158. The relation of the current to the effective masses and relevant parameters of the Skyrme functional is analyzed. It is shown that the current contributes substantially to E1 and E2 and the contribution is the same for all the isotopes along the chain, i.e. for both standard and exotic nuclei.

Abstract (sommario):
Over the last few decades the mean field approach using selfconsistentHaretree-Fock (HF) calculations with Skyrme effectiveinteractions have been found very satisfactory in reproducingnuclear properties for both stable and unstable nuclei. They arebased on effective energy-density functional, often formulated interms of effective density-dependent nucleon–nucleon interactions. In the present research, the SkM, SkM*, SI, SIII, SIV, T3, SLy4,Skxs15, Skxs20 and Skxs25 Skyrme parameterizations have beenused within HF method to investigate some static and dynamicnuclear ground state proprieties of 84-108Mo isotopes. In particular, the binding energy, proton, neutron, mass and charge densities andcorresponding root mean square radius, neutron skin thickness andcharge form factor are calculated by using this method with theSkyrme parameterizations mentioned above. The calculated resultsare compared with the available experimental data. Calculationsshow that the Skyrme–Hartree–Fock (SHF) theory with aboveforce parameters provides a good description on Mo isotopes.

Abstract (sommario):
Pairing properties of even-even superheavy N = 184 isotones are studied within the Skyrme-Hartree-Fock+BCS approach. In the particle-hole channel we take the Skyrme energy density functional SLy4, while in the particle-particle channel we employ the seniority pairing force and zero-range δ-interactions with different forms of density dependence. We conclude that the calculated static fission trajectories weakly depend on the specific form of the δ-pairing interaction. We also investigate the impact of triaxiality on the inner fission barrier and find a rather strong Z dependence of the effect.

Abstract (sommario):
The giant dipole resonance (GDR) in deformed nuclei is analyzed using the self-consistent separable random-phase-approximation (SRPA) with Skyrme forces SkT6, SkM*, SLy6 and SkI3. The deformed nuclei 150 Nd and 238 U are used as representative rare-earth and actinide samples. Dependences of the dipole strength distributions on some basic characteristics of the Skyrme functional and nuclear matter properties (isoscalar and isovector effective masses, time-odd contributions) are discussed. Particular attention is paid to the fragmentation structure of the GDR strength which is shown to depend sensitively to spin-orbit intruder states with large angular momentum.

Abstract (sommario):
Nucleon–nucleus (NA) optical potentials are microscopically generated from a fully self-consistent framework of the particle-vibration coupling (PVC), in which the nucleon–nucleon (NN) effective interaction of the Skyrme type is consistently used to describe the Hartree–Fock (HF) mean-field, the small amplitude collective motions of the target, and the particle-collective states coupling. For the first time, a systematic calculation of low-energy NA elastic scattering off a series of doubly closed-shell nuclei is carried out without ad hoc adjusted parameters. Angular distributions obtained using the present optical potentials are in good agreement with the experimental data. This will be a major step forward in the applications of the Skyrme energy-density-functional theory to build up the global microscopic optical potentials, which are expected to be a powerful tool for the study of unstable (exotic) nuclei at low-incident nucleon energies.

Abstract (sommario):
The possible existence of stable axial octupole and tetrahedral deformations is investigated in 80 Zr and 98 Zr . HFBCS calculations with parity projection have been performed for various parametrizations of the Skyrme energy functional. The correlation and excitation energies of negative parity states associated with shape fluctuations have been obtained using the generator coordinate method (GCM). The results indicate that in these nuclei both the axial octupole and tetrahedral deformations are of dynamic character and possess similar characteristics. Various Skyrme forces give consistent results as a function of these two octupole degrees of freedom both at the mean-field level as well as for configuration mixing calculations.

Abstract (sommario):
The fusion excitation function for the systems [Formula: see text]S+[Formula: see text]Zr is investigated using a microscopic internuclear potential derived from Skyrme energy density functional. The inputs in this approach are the proton and neutron density distributions of the interacting nuclei, which are derived from Skyrme–Hartree–Fock calculations. The SkM[Formula: see text] interaction is used in the calculation of the nuclear densities as well as the internuclear potential. The coupling to low lying inelastic excited states of target and projectile is considered. The role of the neutron transfer is discussed, where it is considered through the CCFULL model calculation. A good agreement with the experimental data is obtained without adjustable parameters.

Abstract (sommario):
A new Skyrme functional has been developed with tensor term guided by ab initio relativistic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock (RBHF) studies on neutron-proton drops. Instead of extracting information on the tensor force from experimental single-particle energy splittings, the RBHF calculations do not contain beyond mean-field effects such as particle-vibration coupling and therefore the information on the tensor force can be obtained without ambiguities. The new functional gives a good description of nuclear ground-state properties aswell as various giant resonances. The description for the evolution of single-particle energy splittings is also improved by the new functional.

Abstract (sommario):
We study pairing vibrations in 18,20,22 O and 42,44,46 Ca nuclei solving the time-dependent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov equation in coordinate space with spherical symmetry. We use the SLy4 Skyrme functional in the particle-hole part of the energy density functional and a local, density-dependent pairing functional in its particle-particle (hole-hole) part. Pairing vibrations are excited by a two-neutrons transfer operator. The Fourier analysis of the time-dependent response of the expectation value of this operator in the linear regime is used to extract strength functions. The presence of the giant pairing vibration is discussed.
