Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The monograph is devoted to the pathogenesis, clinic and treatment of patients with ventral hernia and obesity up to grade II. The features of the development of the disease, accompanied by the development of a cutaneous-subcutaneous apron — panniculus, which significantly affects the dynamics of hernia enlargement and the quality of life of the patient, are described. The classification of the panniculus, developed on the basis of the proposed mathematical model of the development of the pathological process in the abdominal wall, and the justification of indications for its removal are presented. The technique of performing operations in patients with hernias and obesity is described, including the features of processing the remaining edges of the cutaneous-subcutaneous apron, which is aimed at preventing the formation of subcutaneous tissue infarction and seroma in the postoperative period. An algorithm for the treatment of patients with hernias and obesity is proposed, including indications for the volume of surgery depending on the size of the hernia and the skin-subcutaneous apron. Possible complications of operations, methods of their prevention and immediate results are described. Designed for surgeons, students, residents, postgraduates and researchers engaged in the study of problems of experimental and clinical herniology.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter examines the notion of graduate occupations and examines how occupational boundaries are structured within the four occupations. Various existing analytical approaches link graduate occupations to skills use or requirements, high autonomy, or the prevalence of degree holders. These classifications cannot deal very well with the fact that what counts as graduate labour in a graduatizing and competitive labour market is symbolically negotiated (and therefore socially constructed). On top of this, substantive differences in skill requirements and job tasks make the use of existing classifications for distinguishing the graduate and non-graduate occupations challenging. The chapter also shows that many graduate occupations may lack the organizational power, occupational identity, or knowledge base for professionalization to develop.

Abstract (sommario):
Widely recognised as the standard text for trainee psychiatrists, the Shorter Oxford Textbook of Psychiatry stands head and shoulders above the competition. Honed over five editions it displays a rare fluency, authority and insight, and it makes the process of assimilating information as smooth and enjoyable as possible. The resource provides an introduction to all the clinical topics required by the trainee psychiatrist, including all the sub-specialties and major psychiatric conditions. Throughout, the authors emphasize the basic clinical skills required for the full assessment and understanding of the patient. Discussion of treatment includes not only scientific evidence, but also practical problems in the management of patients their family and social context. It emphasizes an evidence-based approach to practice and gives full attention to ethical and legal issues. Introductory chapters focus on recognition of signs and symptoms, classification and diagnosis, psychiatric assessment, and aetiology. Further chapters deal with all the major psychiatric syndromes as well as providing detailed coverage of pharmacological and psychological treatments. It also gives equal prominence to ICD and DSM classification - often with direct comparisons.

Webber, Jonathan. Black Skin, White Masks. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198735908.003.0008.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This chapter argues that Frantz Fanon’s first book Black Skin, White Masks is unified by a profoundly existentialist conception of human being and psychological functioning. It argues against the prevailing reading of the book as a conceptually and methodologically eclectic analysis of various problems of colonialism that offers no prospect of a solution. Rather, the underlying argument of the book is that people become racialized through the collective sedimentation of a colonial value system. The shared culture is suffused with the classification of people into superior and inferior groups and the internalization of this classification causes both social discrimination and psychic distress. This is an existentialist theory because it denies that there is any human nature, any inbuilt traits of groups of people, or any innate traits of individuals. Racialization can be overcome by changing the shared culture that encodes and transmits it.

Abstract (sommario):
The book explores the analysis of modern methodological solutions and standards regarding the classification and description of professional roles (skills / competencies / professions / profiles) in the field of information technology, as well as the analysis of similar aspects related to educational system tools for the development of IT skills / competencies, namely, educational programs and resources. The concept of skills and, above all, digital skills, is becoming dominant in human resources management, and the task of developing the skills necessary to participate in the digital economy and digital society is becoming one of the most important tasks of modern society. It requires the organization of processes for identifying relevant general and specialized digital skills and the organization of educational processes for teaching these skills through the development of the educational and training systems potential, using tools of additional education, lifelong learning and training in the workplace. These studies were carried out as part of the development work to create a system for the development of digital skills in demand in the digital economy, based on formal university education, as well as various forms of additional education, including the participation of employers. This made it possible to substantiate and develop fundamental solutions for creating a system for the development of digital skills, focused on the training of highly qualified specialists, innovative and scientific personnel (digital talents) in the field of computer and information sciences and their applications. In this regard, the authors hope that the research they have performed will be useful to all professionals engaged in solving the problems of personnel management, project management, developing educational and professional standards, developing educational programs and resources for the development of relevant digital skills, as well as all professionals and those who aspires to this, since in the book the reader will find the system of the modern landscape of the IT labor market.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This final chapter concludes the book and reflects on the findings described in the previous chapters. The chapter explains how the idealized version of graduate workers (as being a distinct labour market grouping aligned with high-skilled, high-waged employment) has not really wavered. To understand the status of graduate workers as a group we need to understand the symbolic power graduates hold within the labour market (through symbolic categorization and classification). Yet the case studies also show that the meanings of graduate work, skills, and occupations vary, leaving room for interpretation and contention. The chapter reflects on the role of higher education in the labour market, how we can improve our understanding of graduate work, and what this means for debates about skill policy and social mobility.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This book is the culmination of seven years research into the Carved Stone Balls of Late Neolithic Scotland. It is the first study of these enigmatic artefacts since that undertaken by Dorothy Marshall in 1977 and includes all currently known examples in both museums and private hands, described and analysed in considerable detail. For the first time, visual geological characterisation has been undertaken on approximately a third of carved stone balls, which has enabled a more detailed analysis of their potential origin and the landscapes in which they were found. The book offers a revised classification/typology of these artefacts which, following careful analysis, suggests that it is possible to determine individual craftspeople with a wide range of skills. It suggests that carved stone balls were used as unique and distinctive gestalts that represented the ideology of the core area of Aberdeenshire and enabled disparate groups to recognise one another.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter teaches another essential foundation of acupuncture and Chinese medicine, the theory of Jing Luo, the invisible energy channels known as meridians through which Qi circulates. This chapter presents this complex human energy network as an energetic anatomy that include 12 principal channels (Zheng Jing), 8 extra channels (Qi Jing Ba Mai), 12 associated channels (Jing Bie), 12 peripheral channels (Jin Jing), 12 skin areas (Pi Bou), and 15 connecting channels (Luo Mai). The classification, distribution, and function of each is discussed in detail. There is no modern medicine equivalent to these concepts except for the energetic manifestations of mental and physical function that are well observed and described by clinicians and medical textbooks. Structural parallels to the energetic networks in modern medicine are circulatory systems like the nervous, cardiovascular, and lymphatic systems.

Abstract (sommario):
The vasculitides are a heterogeneous group of disorders that can range from mild inflammation of blood vessels in the skin, to organ- and life-threatening diseases. The term ‘vasculitis’ is a pathological description of blood vessel wall inflammation which leads to ischaemia and infarction of the target organs. Definitions and classifications of the primary vasculitides are mainly based on the predominant calibre of the blood vessels involved but incorporate clinical, pathological, and laboratory features. The secondary vasculitides usually occur in the context of other connective tissue diseases and are not discussed further in this section. Goodpasture’s disease is not usually included in the primary vasculitides, but has compatible clinical features of pulmonary capillaritis and glomerulonephritis.

Abstract (sommario):
The category of Obsessive-Compulsive and Related Disorders (OCRDs) is new to DSM-5 and was one of the more interesting, potentially impactful changes in the revised manual. The new DSM-5 chapter contains OCD, body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), hoarding disorder, trichotillomania (hair-pulling disorder), and excoriation (skin-picking) disorder. The addition of the new OCRD chapter to DSM-5, and grouping these disorders together, has diagnostic, clinical, and research implications. This chapter reviews why and how this new category was added to DSM-5, considers whether this grouping of disorders is correct, and examines the pros and cons of the change. The introduction OCRDs in DSM-5 had wide support. However, the current classification is not perfect, and much more research is needed to establish veridical relationships among disorders. In the meantime, it is hoped that these changes to DSM-5 yield advances in research and improvements in patient care.

Abstract (sommario):
The photographs of twentieth-century photographer Roy DeCarava are a rich case study for mapping the visual theater of race and religion in twentieth-century America. Despite visual similarities in his photographs to contemporary documentary photographers, DeCarava contended that claims to document race in fact worked to invest power in the “madness” of “skin color.” Such a statement echoes the teachings of prophets of black urban religion who incorporated critiques of racial classification into their theological visions. Such visual regimes of race and religion were not limited to persons of African descent. Lewis Hine’s photographs of European immigrants arriving on Ellis Island and Dorothea Lange’s photographs of Japanese American internees were also part of the visual politics of race and religion. By structuring the twentieth century’s ascendant visual regimes around DeCarava, this chapter explores how the technologies, aesthetics, and politics of photography shaped the moral theater of race and religion.

Abstract (sommario):
The defining histological hallmark of immunoglobulin A (IgA) nephropathy is the presence of IgA in the mesangium as the sole or dominant immunoreactant. Light microscopy appearances vary very widely. The most common appearance is mesangial cell proliferation and an increase in mesangial matrix. However, this is not diagnostic in the absence of immunohistology. Focal segmental proliferative or necrotizing glomerulonephritis may be seen in ‘vasculitic’ disease with or without the skin changes of Henoch–Schönlein purpura. Extracapillary proliferation and crescent formation may occur. Occasionally florid haematuria may cause renal failure through acute tubular injury. Most commonly the disease is slowly evolving and focal or global sclerosis and tubulointerstitial scarring develop. The Oxford classification scheme may give some prognostic weight to these changes. There are no reliable serological or urine tests for the disease. Although average levels of serum IgA are above the population average this is not diagnostically useful in individual patients. Promising biomarkers in urine and serum are under investigation.

Abstract (sommario):
The first description of cutaneous ulcerations consistent with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) has been attributed to Hippocrates. The term lupus first appeared in English literature in the tenth century. Until the nineteenth century, however, this term was used to describe different conditions. Osler first recognized that organ involvement may occur with or without skin involvement. With the discovery of LE cells and autoantibodies, the use of lupus murine models, and the recognition of familial aggregation and the importance of genetic factors, the pathogenesis of SLE started to be unravelled and allowed the definition of classification criteria. In parallel, the discovery of cortisone, the use of immunosuppressive drugs and antimalarials, the control of hypertension, and the availability of renal replacement therapy improved the prognosis of SLE from a 4-year survival of 51% to a 5-year survival >90%. Advances in genetics and targeted therapies will lead to better intermediate and long-term outcomes.

Abstract (sommario):
The term 'scleroderma' describes a group of conditions in which the development of thickened, fibrotic skin is a cardinal feature. This includes localized forms of scleroderma (e.g. morphoea) and also systemic forms of the disease that are more correctly termed systemic sclerosis. Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a multiorgan, autoimmune disease that has a high clinical burden and mortality, due to affecting the skin as well as internal organs. As with other related diseases there is a female predominance and marked clinical diversity. The pathogenesis of SSc is not fully elucidated; it includes endothelial cell injury fibroblast activation and autoimmunity that lead to skin and internal organ manifestations. The majority of cases exhibit characteristic serum autoantibodies. Some of these antibodies are scleroderma-specific reactivities including anti-centromere (ACA), anti-topoisomerase-1 (ATA or Scl 70) or anti-RNA polymerase III antibodies. These anti-nuclear antibody (ANA) patterns are generally mutually exclusive and serve as useful clinical markers of disease subgroups. Additional subsetting of scleroderma cases, based on the extent of skin sclerosis, permits classification into limited and diffuse subsets. Because of the heterogeneity of the disease patients may suffer from different organ manifestations, such as lung fibrosis, hypertensive renal crisis, severe cardiac disease, gastrointestinal involvement, and pulmonary arterial hypertension. Although outcomes have improved recently, systemic sclerosis still has the highest case-specific mortality of any of the autoimmune rheumatic diseases and requires careful and systematic investigation, management and follow-up. Treatment includes symptomatic strategies with attention to each involved organ system; it is still an area where therapeutic progress and better understanding of pathogenesis is increasingly anticipated.

Richly illustrated with colour photographs, the different species of insects found in Australia’s temperate south-east, including plant feeders, predators, parasites and decomposers, are presented. The guide is complemented by an introduction to the insects of the region, including their environment, classification, life history, feeding strategies and behaviour. Fascinating boxes on camouflage, mimicry and many other topics are also included throughout. Whether you are a field naturalist, entomologist or just want to know what’s in your backyard, Insects of South-Eastern Australia will help you to identify the insects most likely to be encountered, as well as understand the basics of their ecology and behaviour. Recipient of a 2016 Whitley Award commendation for Illustrated Guide
