Abstract (sommario):
<p><strong>Abstract.</strong> This paper presents a project-based learning method designed by teachers of GIS for students in public order. The aim of the method is to utilize GIS technologies for analysing digital sketch maps made after interviewing people by students. This method gives a hands-on experience of the students about the subjective feelings of the citizens of the examined settlements. For the projects, a paper-based survey and a web application in the form of digital sketch maps were used.</p><p>The article shows the process of projects used in the studies of public order. The methods applied in the phase of planning, processing and visualising of the data are explained in the case of digital sketch maps and of paper-based surveys. Some general findings of the project are also introduced as well as the students’ opinion of the effectiveness of the projects.</p><p>General findings show that the results of the students correlate with observations found in the literature. It is evident that more informatics the students acquire during their everyday routine, the more useful and beneficial they find the usage of Geographical Information Systems and the project of using digital sketch maps of fear of crime in different cities.</p>

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract: In this modern age, the general crime rate is increasing day-by-day and to cope up with this the enforcement departments too should find ways in which would speed up the overall process and help them in bringing one to justice. One such way can be using face recognition technology for identifying and verifying the criminal. The traditional approach here is to use the hand-drawn face sketches drawn by forensic sketch artist tospot the criminal, modernizing this is able to mean using the hand-drawn sketch and then matching them with the enforcement departments database to spot the criminal. Using this approach would result in the various limitations with latest technologies andeven would be time consuming as there are very few forensic sketch artists available when compared to the increasing crime ratio. Our project is aimed on decreasing the time span and speeding up this process by providing a standalone platform to the law enforcement department which would allow users to create accurate face sketch of the suspect without the help of forensic sketch artist and no special training or artistic skills. The sketch can be created using drag and drop feature in the application with variety of face elements and can automatically match the drawn composite face sketch with the law enforcement departments database much faster and efficiently using deep learning and cloud infrastructure.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractVisualisation of ideas and emergent designs is an essential ingredient in design practice. Sketching and CAD represent two widely used visualisation tools, each with complementary affordances that dictate their typical use during the design process. Sketching has affordances of fast and fluent visualisation whereas CAD affords easy modification of detailed designs. This paper proposes a hybrid tool, Digital Sketch Modelling, investigating the extent to which it can deliver complementary affordances of both sketching to CAD. Analysis of diary entries made by 62 postgraduate designers using sketching, digital sketch modelling and CAD within a design project forms the basis of the study. Results illustrate how digital sketching over crude 3d digital models, combined with benefits of digital image editing software enhance affordance for easy visualisation of ideas. Concurrently, the level of software used in Digital Sketch modelling led to fewer concerns over the level of difficulty to modify designs, enhancing the affordance for easy modification. As such we conclude Digital Sketch Modelling does combine affordances indicating its potential benefit in use between sketching and CAD.

Abstract (sommario):
Virtual Sketch is in where we can draw by just capturing the motion of a colored marker with a camera. One colored object at the tip of the finger is mainly used as the marker. We are here now, using the techniques of computer vision in open cv to build this project. The required language for this project is python due to its more exhaustive libraries and easy to make use of the syntax and but understanding the basics as well as it can be implemented in any open cv supported languages The colour tracking and detection processes are used to achieve the goal of this project. The color marker here used is detected and mask is produced. The next steps of morphological operations on the mask produced those are Erosion and Dilation. Erosion makes the impurities present in the mask to get reduced and Dilation further regains the eroded main mask.

Abstract (sommario):
Previous studies have demonstrated the importance of sketching in design cognition, particularly in the early stages of engineering design. The goal of this preliminary study is to consider the role of a designer’s sketching ability and to examine the potential link between sketching skill and measures of engineering design performance. Sketching ability was evaluated on three distinct aspects relevant to engineering design: visual recall, rendering, and novel visualization. These evaluations were correlated with each other and with measures for sketch fluency, reviewer ranking, and design project outcome. The results of this study suggest that sketching skill is not comprehensive nor is it solely task based. Rather, a designer’s sketching ability lies between these two poles. Positive correlations were found between the quantity of sketches produced and two of the sketching skills that emphasize drawing facility, but a negative correlation was found between sketch quantity and a skill related to mechanism visualization. No conclusive correlations were found between the sketching skills and design outcome and reviewer ranking. This study's findings suggest an important interplay between a designer's ability to sketch and their ability to visualize in their heads or through prototypes. Results also suggest that designers who are given sketch instruction tended to draw more overall.

The maintenance of the map of the restored property as specified in the text of Article 15, paragraph 1 of Ordinance No 49 for the maintenance of the card of the restored property [www.ciela.net] [2] shall be carried out by the Municipalities of Agriculture by land. An essential point reflected in the text of Article 30 of Ordinance No 49 [2] is the legal requirements for the numbering of the properties subject to a map of the restored property. Each landed property is designated with a specific number. The characteristic of this number is that it cannot be repeated with another property number on the territory of the country. The estate number is also the number of newly formed property under a project for consideration or consolidation of a land property. The sketch of the project for partitioning, splitting or merging of properties is made by the contractor of the technical activities for maintaining a map of the restored property, determined by the order of the Public Procurement Act [www.ciela.net] [7]. The sketch should contain ten items, nine technical and one administrative.

Abstract (sommario):
The paper explores Gernot Böhme’s attempt to transform the concept of atmosphere into an aesthetical concept of the natural environment and follows his effort to outline a phenomenology of the weather based on this aesthetics. Böhme’s original project, prompted by a growing environmental concern, was to develop new forms of knowledge of nature to counter what he considered detrimental consequences of a one-sided rationalistic-scientific view of nature. Inspired by Hermann Schmitz’s phenomenology of the body and emotional atmospheres, Böhme developed his aesthetics to be a general theory of sensation and a phenomenology of the environment. His weather phenomenology is yet only a sketch, but, in light of imminent climatic changes, it might prove a sketch worth considering.

Abstract (sommario):
Sketch based image retrieval (SBIR) is a sub-domain of Content Based Image Retrieval(CBIR) where the user provides a drawing as an input to obtain i.e retrieve images relevant to the drawing given. The main challenge in SBIR is the subjectivity of the drawings drawn by the user as it entirely relies on the user's ability to express information in hand-drawn form. Since many of the SBIR models created aim at using singular input sketch and retrieving photos based on the given single sketch input, our project aims to enable detection and extraction of multiple sketches given together as a single input sketch image. The features are extracted from individual sketches obtained using deep learning architectures such as VGG16 , and classified to its type based on supervised machine learning using Support Vector Machines. Based on the class obtained, photos are retrieved from the database using an opencv library, CVLib , which finds the objects present in a photo image. From the number of components obtained in each photo, a ranking function is performed to rank the retrieved photos, which are then displayed to the user starting from the highest order of ranking up to the least. The system consisting of VGG16 and SVM provides 89% accuracy

Abstract (sommario):
Mollenhauer presents his book as a rough sketch of what Allgemeine Pädagogik (General Pedagogic) could be – an outline of "a general study of Bildung and upbringing" (Mollenhauer, 2014, p. 9) – a daring project, which in my view is even more needed today than in 1983. Mollenhauer shows a way to a practically committed, historically-founded and future-oriented theory of emancipatory upbringing and education; built on reliable elements in the cultural and pedagogical tradition, which we, as responsible adults, should not forget, when we, together with the new generation, face present and future challenges. In this essay, I attempt a short interpretation of his sketch and give some brief evaluative comments in the final section.

Abstract (sommario):
The existing temple complex in Hampi, Karnataka, India was extensively studied, analyzed and documented. The complex was measured-drawn and digitized by plotting its edges and vertices using AutoCAD to generate 2d drawings. The graphic 2d elements developed were extended into 3 dimensional objects using Google sketch-up. The tool has been used to facilitate the visual re-construction to achieve the architecture of the temple in its original form. 3D virtual modelling / visual reconstruction helps us to visualize the structure in its original form giving a holistic picture of the Vijayanagara Empire in all its former glory. The project is interpreted graphically using Auto-CAD drawings, pictorially, digitally using Sketch-Up model and Kinect.

Abstract (sommario):
The article traces the textual history of A. A. Blok’s poetic sketch «Rejoicing and Spinning…», which was previously erroneously treated as a completed work. The fi nal argument in resolving the issue is the previously unknown letter from A. A. Blok to D. N. Friedberg, discovered in the V. N. Orlov Foundation at RGALI, which is being introduced into the academic circulation for the first time. The circumstances of the two Symbolist poets’ cooperation in V. A. Ternavtsev’s educational and enlightenment project, the publication of textbooks for the primary classes of the «folk schools», are revealed. The analysis of the microtext — the notes and marginalia adjacent to the sketch — is instrumental for tracing the influence of V. Bryusov’s folklore stylizations on Blok’s early experiments with the form of «childish» or «naive» poetry.

Abstract (sommario):
The AMUC (Associated Motion capture User Categories) project consisted of building a prototype sketch retrieval client for exploring motion capture archives. High-dimensional datasets reflect the dynamic process of motion capture and comprise high-rate sampled data of a performer's joint angles; in response to multiple query criteria, these data can potentially yield different kinds of information. The AMUC prototype harnesses graphic input via an electronic tablet as a query mechanism, time and position signals obtained from the sketch being mapped to the properties of data streams stored in the motion capture repository. As well as proposing a pragmatic solution for exploring motion capture datasets, the project demonstrates the conceptual value of iterative prototyping in innovative interdisciplinary design. The AMUC team was composed of live performance practitioners and theorists conversant with a variety of movement techniques, bioengineers who recorded and processed motion data for integration into the retrieval tool, and computer scientists who designed and implemented the retrieval system and server architecture, scoped for Grid-based applications. Creative input on information system design and navigation, and digital image processing, underpinned implementation of the prototype, which has undergone preliminary trials with diverse users, allowing identification of rich potential development areas.

Six hitherto unpublished letters and a poetic postcard represent C.S. Lewis’s side of a correspondence in the early 1940s with the artist and illustrator Thomas Derrick. The letters discuss the possibility, which was never realised, of an illustrated edition of The Screwtape Letters and intriguingly indicate that Lewis and the artist discussed other collaborative possibilities, most notably a project on the virtues and the vices, also sadly unrealised. Lewis sent Derrick an early sketch of Screwtape.

Abstract (sommario):
In recent years there has been a great deal of discussion about the prospects of developing a ‘naturalized epistemology’, though different authors tend to interpret this label in quite different ways. One goal of this paper is to sketch three projects that might lay claim to the ‘naturalized epistemology’ label, and to argue that they are not all equally attractive. Indeed, I'll maintain that the first of the three—the one I'll attribute to Quine—is simply incoherent. There is no way we could get what we want from an epistemological theory by pursuing the project Quine proposes. The second project on my list is a naturalized version of reliabilism. This project is not fatally flawed in the way that Quine's is. However, it's my contention that the sort of theory this project would yield is much less interesting than might at first be thought.

Abstract (sommario):
Constantinos Doxiadis (1913–1975), the inventor of ekistics and founder of the eponymous journal, was one of the major architects and city planners of the twentieth century. In recent decades, however, his body of work has been largely ignored. In 2011, his monumental house at Porto Rafti was demolished, exposing the consequences of such obscurity. To date, no comprehensive narrative biography of Doxiadis exists in English, a void I seek to fill in my ongoing biography project of Doxiadis’ life and legacy, tentatively titled The World Planner. In this essay, I discuss the fate of the Porto Rafti house, sketch Doxiadis’ life story, explain the origins of my project, and solicit further collaboration from interested readers.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper presents a sketch-level feasibility study for a proposed 28-mi commuter rail line connecting downtown Charlotte, North Carolina, to its fast-growing suburbs. Full-scale feasibility studies can be expensive, especially for cash-strapped local government agencies. A sketch analysis, such as the one presented here, is a low-cost means of determining whether a project merits further study. Ridership for the line is conservatively estimated at 2,010 in 2015 and 2,574 in 2035. Higher-speed service and a greater frequency of midday trains are shown to significantly increase these numbers. Cost-effectiveness depends largely on the actual cost per mile, but conservative estimates place the proposed route in the middle of the pack of new-start commuter rail lines: more cost-effective than the routes of Minneapolis, Minnesota, or Austin, Texas, but slightly less cost-effective than those of Albuquerque, New Mexico, or Nashville, Tennessee. In view of these results, a more comprehensive study appears to be merited.

What began as a humble sketch on the back of an envelope, the Hundertwasser Art Centre with Wairau Māori Art Gallery project has evolved into a unique and ambitious quest for artistic representation in Northland. The history of this controversial public art project, yet to be built, has seen a number of debates take place, locally and nationally, around the importance of art in urban and rural societies and the broader socio-economic context surrounding the development of civic architecture in New Zealand. This project has not only challenged the people of Northland to think about the role of art in their community, but it has prompted New Zealanders to question whether there is an appropriate level of investment in the arts in New Zealand.

<span>For some decades, students and scholars of Political Science have debated methodological differences, paradigmatic differences, and policy differences as they relate to curricula. Today, the real challenges facing the teaching of Political Science have less to do with content and much more to do with form and process. The next transformation in teaching and learning must address what kind of political scientist we wish to be, which kind of Political Science we need to create.</span> Our argument advances in three moments. First, we sketch contemporary contexts for analyzing teaching and learning, musing about old and new paradigmatic/methodological debates and the new social-technological contexts of undergraduate learning. Second, we discuss conceptions of competencies in the U.S., Europe, and in relation to a specific Political Science program in Brazil. Third, we dare to sketch a “metaprofile” of the “good political scientist”, modeled on the work of the ALFA Tuning Project of the European Commission and reflections on related Brazilian and Latin American experiences.

When in October 2011 the Georgian billionaire Bidzina Ivanishvili announced that he was going into politics, discussions focused on whether he is a “Kremlin project” or not. This biographical sketch charts the rise of Ivanishvili and explores his previous business career in Russia, his professional relationships and key transactions, and his views on the future of Georgian-Russian relations.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper reports ongoing work in the “Networks of Texts and People” project, which is developing methods to visualize the social and epistemological contexts of information contained in blogs. Here, we propose an approach to visualize information diffusion and polarization in the blogosphere, with two novel characteristics. Firstly, we demonstrate how text content can be analyzed and visualized as key statements, rather than as keywords. Secondly, we sketch and discuss ideas for a visual analytic tool that integrates data about blog networks with data about the occurrence of related key statements in blog posts.

Abstract (sommario):
Virtual and augmented realities open a new world of great potential for spatial research and experimentation by allowing new forms of unbuilt sensible architectural space. This article starts with a sketch of the current context in virtual reality and continues by outlining the development and structure of the research ‘project Anywhere’. The project is an easily deployable, wireless, multi-user, augmented reality app system that offers full body immersion through body, head and hands tracking. It can host multiple concurrent users, able to move freely in the virtual space, by moving in the real and also perform actions through a gesture interface to affect their shared environment. In conclusion, we describe the inherent properties of such a space, which we propose as a novel spatio-temporal medium for architecture that suggests an enriched notion of space for exploration and experimentation, through an example of a potential application.

Abstract (sommario):
This article is a reply to Richard Lauer’s “Is Social Ontology Prior to Social Scientific Methodology?” and an attempt to contribute to the meta-social ontological discourse more broadly. In the first part I will give a rough sketch of Lauer’s general project and confront his pragmatist approach with a fundamental problem. The second part of my reply will provide a solution for this problem rooted in a philosophy of the social sciences in practice.

Abstract (sommario):
Rudolph Michael Schindler (1887–1953) designed a beach house for Henry Braxton and Viola Brothers Shore in 1930. The house was to have been sited on Ocean Front Walk, Venice, Los Angeles [1]. It was never built, but remains a paper project. In the architectural drawings archives at University of California, Santa Barbara, there are both sketch plans and detailed plans for four levels: the ground floor, the main floor, the balcony floor and the roof level. There are drawings for each of the four elevations as well as sections. Constructional details are provided on five sheets. All told there are 13 extant drawings. In his signature upper case, Schindler typed a brief written description of the house [Table 1].

Abstract (sommario):
Everybody, in the academic/activist world at least, seems to hate exclusionary zoning (EZ). In this intervention, I question this prevalent sentiment, especially as held by urban/housing scholars dedicated to the pursuit of social (or housing) justice. I find that the effort to curtail EZ—the Anti-Exclusionary Zoning (Anti-EZ) Project—embraces a set of pernicious normative values giving rise to sociopolitical outcomes far more detrimental to social justice than EZ’s actual adverse effects. Most saliently, while the practice of EZ is often a manifestation of the ubiquitous and enduring presence of racism in America, the Anti-EZ Project inflicts an even greater degree of racialized harm upon the disadvantaged. I thus find that, strategically, the Anti-EZ Project stands in polar opposition to what the pursuit of social/racial justice demands, and I briefly sketch the basic contours of this alternative strategy, pointing to, inter alia, some affinities with the Movement for Black Lives platform.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractThis article uses a case study to illustrate how science fair projects—which traditionally focus on “hard science” topics—can contribute to political science education. One of the authors, a high school student, conducted an experimental study of politics for her science fair project. The other author, a faculty member, was asked to advise the student on the project to allay initial skepticism about its focus on a “soft science” topic. The results of the experiment indicated that exposure to a televised comedy sketch about the 2008 presidential campaign yielded learning effects and fostered political interest among high school students. The authors recommend political science fair projects as tools for introducing precollegiate students to the political science research process and offering political scientists opportunities to educate students beyond the university setting.

Abstract (sommario):
Formal models of currency crises have shown that inconsistencies between countries' domestic and exchange rate policies are a major cause of currency crises. To understand why such prolonged inconsistencies exist, we need to go beyond standard economic models and take political economy and behavioral considerations into account. We sketch out ways in which such considerations can be taken into account and highlight recent research that is useful for this project. We also offer some directions for future research and a brief guide to the empirical identification of currency crises and to the measurements of some of the relevant political and economic policy variables.

Abstract (sommario):
Modernization of public administration is currently underway in Kazakhstan. One ofits directions is to improve the quality of public services. In this article, we conducted a study onthe optimization of services of local executive bodies in the field of obtaining permits, on whichfavorable conditions for business development in construction largely depend. The analysis of normative legal acts on the provision of services “Provision of raw materials forthe development of construction and reconstruction projects (redevelopment and re-equipment)”and “Approval of the sketch and (sketch project)” showed that there are several problems. Inparticular, this applies to the duration of the approval stage (27 working days) and the bureaucracyin obtaining permits for construction (duplication of functions, repeated application, requestingadditional documents). To solve the mentioned problems, we propose to optimize these services, that is, to combinethem into one service. To implement this idea, we need to change the process in submitting anarchitectural and planning task, it is necessary to include the design project in the list of documentsat the stage of consideration of the application. As a result, the applicant will receive both aconstruction permit and an agreed design project at the exit. Also, it is recommended to excludethe function of obtaining permission for technical conditions for connecting to the engineeringinfrastructure from utilities when providing services for architectural and planning tasks andtechnical conditions, since it is already provided when obtaining a land plot for construction.Proposed optimization of public services will eliminate duplication of functions, reduce time forreviewing documents from 27 working days to 10-15 working days, depending on the complexityof the object, create a composite service and comply with the principle of “One window”.

Abstract (sommario):
The Architecture Design Course 1 (KKSB1116) is the main subject course for the Bachelor of Architecture Science (BSc Arch) program at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). This course is offered in the first semester of year one and it is fundamental to the process of producing architectural design. The application of an experimental learning style is one of the ways to build awareness, knowledge and skills in the design learning process. This paper investigates the experiential learning style applied in the project of translating elements of nature into a self-portrait artwork using basic principles of design which are the lines and basic shapes of geometry. In this project, students were exposed to various learning methods such as experiential trip in nature, the use of sketch method in the form of mind map and the workshop environment. The research methodologies used are the combination of qualitative and quantitative approaches, where qualitative (in-depth interview and unstructured observation) is the main method. The findings showed that the students successfully translated objects from the elements of nature into the design project. It can be seen through a sketch of a graphic mind map and the production of a two-dimensional artwork design that highlights the basic principles of geometric design from a multidirectional combination of line sketches. This method of learning can be the benchmark for first year (basic) architectural education program especially for a bachelor of sciences level. The study suggests how the concept of the mind map approach and skills of workshop can be developed for the following year that is adapted to the program complexity.

Abstract (sommario):
While Jacques Rancière has never been affiliated in any way with the Institute for Social Research, this article examines the extent to which his work could be considered “Critical Theory” in the sense most closely associated with the Frankfurt School tradition. I argue that Rancière’s work is not critical theory in this narrow sense; I further lay out a kind of “Rancièrean” criticism of the very project of Frankfurt School Critical Theory. This in turn allows me to sketch out a version of Critical Theory that might survive a Rancièrean critique. Even by this renewed conception, however, I argue that Rancière’s own work still cannot be considered a project of Critical Theory; but I finish the essay by laying out what a possible “Rancièrean” Critical Theory might look like, and why I think such a project would be valuable.

Abstract (sommario):
The HIPPARCOS satellite is an approved project of the European Space Agency since 1980. A sketch of the past and future development of the project is given. The resulting astrometric parameters and magnitudes of 100 000 stars should be available circa 1993. Many astronomical groups are involved in the preparation of the mission together with ESA bodies and industry. Their functions and mutual interfaces are described. The main features of the satellite are presented. While observing out of the atmosphere removes most of the effects that limit the accuracy of ground based astrometry, new causes of systematic or random errors appear in an instrument designed for a millisecond of arc level of precision. The main limitations that have been identified are discussed: basic angle unstability, mechanical jitter, grid irregularity, diffraction chromatism, shape of the image dissector sensitivity profile. The consequence is that the presently expected basic measurement precision is limited not only by the photon count errors. However, all these effects are taken into account when assessing a final accuracy of 0″.002 for the astrometric parameters of a 9-th magnitude star.

Abstract (sommario):
The current study compared two instructional approaches to supporting reading comprehension and lexico-grammatical competence in instruction of English for Specific Purposes for Civil Engineering students. The first instructional approach was structured according to students’ content domain knowledge, using sketch construction technical drawings and information, and included simultaneous learning of different language structures in each content topic. The second instructional approach was systematically structured according to language domains and included step by step mastering of various language topics. Both instructional approaches incorporated principles of a communicative-cognitive approach, such as informational transfer and reflection as a metacognitive strategy. The samples of reflection tasks exemplify the reflection principle to showcase students’ robust metacognitive awareness. Over 6 months, students completed assignments which embedded the use of one of the instructional approaches in the spotlight of above mentioned principles. Results demonstrated the efficiency of the content domain approach over that of the language domain approach. Thus, the content domain approach, which is conceptually similar to interleaved practice, fosters lexico-grammatical competence acquisition in reading on the basis of the sketch construction project.

Abstract (sommario):
We sketch a project that marries probabilistic grammar research to scholarship on World Englishes, thus synthesizing two previously rather disjoint lines of research into one unifying project with a coherent focus. This synthesis is hoped to advance usage-based theoretical linguistics by adopting a large-scale comparative and sociolinguistically responsible perspective on grammatical variation. To highlight the descriptive and theoretical benefits of the approach, we present case studies of three syntactic alternations (the particle placement, genitive, and dative alternations) in four varieties of English (British, Canadian, Indian, and Singapore), as represented in the International Corpus of English. We report that the varieties studied share a core probabilistic grammar which is, however, subject to indigenization at various degrees of subtlety, depending on the abstractness of the syntactic patterns studied.

Abstract Twain's early career as a newspaper reporter and sketch writer demonstrates the messiness of his early relationship to the American periodical landscape. Using reprint detection methods developed by the Viral Texts project, this article explores incidents in Twain's early career in which his name was added to a text in circulation, removed from a text, or the text itself was recontextualized as it circulated in newspapers. While Twain would later become a media mastermind in this burgeoning age of mass-media print production, these messier beginnings show Twain struggling, and sometimes failing, to exert his influence over the trajectory of his writing.

Abstract (sommario):
A process under development at the Georgia Institute of Technology to standardize, enhance, and automate planning and project evaluation for transportation projects in rural Georgia is described. The process will incorporate current statewide planning techniques in use at the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) and additional sketch planning techniques that will use existing GDOT data. The purpose of this multimodal transportation planning tool (MMTPT) is to aid GDOT and local agencies in evaluating transportation requirements of rural areas and potential implementation constraints early in the planning process. The tool will include a system-level component to develop a prioritized list of projects by mode for a county and a project-level component to perform more detailed evaluations of roadway project alternatives and multimodal enhancements. The MMTPT will operate in a computerized hybrid system that uses expert system and conventional algorithmic programming techniques. Although organizational, management, and funding constraints that discourage multimodal planning are not overcome, the tool addresses the shortage of analytical planning techniques.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper aims to provide a preliminary sketch of Limbu phonology based on the field recordings conducted under an ongoing Sikkim’s Endangered Language Documentation Project (SELDP) in Sikkim University, India. In the Limbu variety spoken in Sikkim there are 18 consonant phonemes that contrast in the manner and place of articulation. A complementary distribution is observed between various pairs, especially between voiceless and voiced obstruents. Limbu has 11 monophthongs but lacks diphthongs. The canonical form of a syllable is (C)(C)V(C). The rule that regulates syllabication is the Maximal Onset rule. This paper focuses on the analysis of phonological and syllabification rules followed by the language.

Abstract (sommario):
Involving EFL students in 3D printing in a language classroom introduces the idea of project-based CALL, where different technology interfaces engage students in complex technical writing activities and social interactions in a fluid language-learning environment. This paper took an instructional approach to explaining how project-based CALL environment could be created with 3D printing based practices, combining technical communication with systems thinking, online research, 3D scanning, computer-aided design, sketch boarding and concept mapping, prototyping, and digital content management. Class performance in this collaborative, autonomous and social language-learning environment suggested that students were able to produce technical writing, prepare documentation, demonstrated critical thinking and brainstorming, and develop design and implementation strategies while handling 3D printing-enabled processes. Results and patterns of student engagement with technology indicated that project-based learning (PBL) approach in TC classroom is engaging, unique, realistic and feasible.

It is in this sense, then, both a carrying forward and a renovation. The limitation I have in mind is Heideg-ger‘s focus upon philosophy, and more specifically written philosophy, for the tracing of the History of Being. This limitation will be addressed by asking what Homer might be able to tell us about the historical unfolding that Heidegger traces in his investigations. As this is a very large project, this paper will sketch the avenues the investigation might take and then focus in detail upon the potential importance of Homeric simile for the path of thinking we embark upon with Heidegger.

Abstract (sommario):
Contemporary political philosophers are often uncomfortable with the notion that a conception of the good life can be developed out of liberalism. Liberalism, they say, should remain neutral out of respect for pluralism. Early liberals of the nineteenth century, however, understood their project as a vindication of the good life, along with a diagnosis of what threatens it. This article attempts to build a conception of the good life from liberal values and sensibilities, yet not run afoul of the need to respect pluralism. It draws on early and contemporary liberals, as well as popular culture, to sketch a way of life that is fulfilling and available for us today.

Abstract (sommario):
The educational project involving the design of a school yard using Google SketchUp, presented in this paper, was originally designed and implemented by undergraduate students at the Department of Primary Education of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (UoA) in the context of their studies in the “Teaching Geography with ICT” course. The aim of the project was to create awareness of spaces and their functions, and to redesign those spaces using Google Sketch up according to criteria relating both to the environment and the needs of pupils and their education. The assessment of this initiative, carried out by the undergraduate students during the pilot study showed that there is a distinct need for connecting real spaces with technology and for familiarity with the tools that help pupils visualise the space and that Google SketchUp could be an effective tool that is easily applied to this project and can enrich geography lessons for pupils in upper primary and lower secondary education.

Abstract (sommario):
This article describes how GIS is increasingly being used to explore, analyze, and visualize qualitative social data across space. The authors applied a number of geovisualization and analysis approaches to spaces identified on maps by survey participants, in the context of a Human Ecology Mapping (HEM) project in western North Carolina. HEM is an applied research endeavor that has been used in a number of other locations to tease out relationships between people and landscapes by identifying both the activities people do in certain locations and the values they hold about those locations. The authors' western NC project gathered location information through participant sketch mapping, and activities, values, and social/demographic data in a survey. They combined these in a GIS and present a selection of visualization and analyses that demonstrate the effectiveness of GIS techniques in understanding places, how they are used, and which people use them for what purposes.
