Digital quantum simulation has broad applications in approximating unitary evolution of Hamiltonians. In practice, many simulation tasks for quantum systems focus on quantum states in the low-energy subspace instead of the entire Hilbert space. In this paper, we systematically investigate the complexity of digital quantum simulation based on product formulas in the low-energy subspace. We show that the simulation error depends on the effective low-energy norm of the Hamiltonian for a variety of digital quantum simulation algorithms and quantum systems, allowing improvements over the previous complexities for full unitary simulations even for imperfect state preparations due to thermalization. In particular, for simulating spin models in the low-energy subspace, we prove that randomized product formulas such as qDRIFT and random permutation require smaller Trotter numbers. Such improvement also persists in symmetry-protected digital quantum simulations. We prove a similar improvement in simulating the dynamics of power-law quantum interactions. We also provide a query lower bound for general digital quantum simulations in the low-energy subspace.

Analyzing the pedestrian subconscious behavior and walking environment in the passage, right-moving preference subconscious strength and overtaking subconscious strength are introduced into the pedestrian simulation model which is based on lattice gas model. Two pedestrian subconscious behavior simulation models, which are distinguished by whether considering pedestrian flow ratio of two directions or not, are established respectively. With the platform of MATLAB software, the simulations of pedestrian counter flow subconscious behavior are realized. The simulations indicate that compared with the pedestrian subconscious behavior simulation model without considering the pedestrian flow ratio of two directions, the model that considers the pedestrian flow ratio of two directions is better in simulating the pedestrian subconscious behavior.

Nach einigen Vorschlägen zur Charakterisierung der Besonderheiten von Computersimulationen werden zwei Beispiele interpretiert (Management-Simulationen der 1960er und verkehrstechnische bzw. epidemiologische Simulationen der 1990er). Daraus leiten sich Fragen nach dem veränderten Status wissenschaftlichen Wissens, nach der Genese wissenschaftstheoretischer Konzepte und nach wissenschaftskritischen Optionen ab. </br></br>The paper suggests to analyze the history of scientific computer simulations with respect to the history of media. After presenting some ideas concerning the peculiarities of computer simulation, two examples (management simulations of the 1960s; traffic-related and epistemological simulations of the 1990s) are interpreted. From them, further questions concerning the status of scientific knowledge, the genesis of epistemological concepts and their critique are derived. "

Abstract The aim of this paper is to grasp the relevant distinctions between various ways in which models and simulations in Artificial Intelligence (AI) relate to cognitive phenomena. In order to get a systematic picture, a taxonomy is developed that is based on the coordinates of formal versus material analogies and theory-guided versus pre-theoretic models in science. These distinctions have parallels in the computational versus mimetic aspects and in analytic versus exploratory types of computer simulation. The proposed taxonomy cuts across the traditional dichotomies between symbolic and embodied AI, general intelligence and symbol and intelligence and cognitive simulation and human/non-human-like AI. According to the taxonomy proposed here, one can distinguish between four distinct general approaches that figured prominently in early and classical AI, and that have partly developed into distinct research programs: first, phenomenal simulations (e.g., Turing’s “imitation game”); second, simulations that explore general-level formal isomorphisms in pursuit of a general theory of intelligence (e.g., logic-based AI); third, simulations as exploratory material models that serve to develop theoretical accounts of cognitive processes (e.g., Marr’s stages of visual processing and classical connectionism); and fourth, simulations as strictly formal models of a theory of computation that postulates cognitive processes to be isomorphic with computational processes (strong symbolic AI). In continuation of pragmatic views of the modes of modeling and simulating world affairs, this taxonomy of approaches to modeling in AI helps to elucidate how available computational concepts and simulational resources contribute to the modes of representation and theory development in AI research—and what made that research program uniquely dependent on them.

Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations offer an interesting route to simulating deformation and fracture behavior of amorphous glassy polymers. However, MD simulations are performed at extremely high rates and on very small samples (though periodic boundary conditions are routinely used) containing at most hundreds of chains which are much shorter than in real life. In this work, we try to assess the extent to which MD simulations produce physically realistic stress–strain responses and identify aspects of the simulation procedure that can be controlled closely in order to avoid numerical artifacts. We show that, when an appropriate protocol for sample generation and simulation of deformation is followed, in spite of the obvious constraints imposed by the simulation technique, MD simulations have the capability to generate realistic stress–strain curves and reproduce many experimental trends pertaining to them.

AbstractSpectrum simulation is a useful practical and pedagogical tool. Particularly with complex samples or trace constituents, a simulation can help to understand the limits of the technique and the instrument parameters for the optimal measurement. DTSA-II, software for electron probe microanalysis, provides both easy to use and flexible tools for simulating common and less common sample geometries and materials. Analytical models based on ϕ(ρz) curves provide quick simulations of simple samples. Monte Carlo models based on electron and X-ray transport provide more sophisticated models of arbitrarily complex samples. DTSA-II provides a broad range of simulation tools in a framework with many different interchangeable physical models. In addition, DTSA-II provides tools for visualizing, comparing, manipulating, and quantifying simulated and measured spectra.

Simulation is an established tool to develop and validate camera systems. The goal of autonomous driving is pushing simulation into a more important and fundamental role for safety, validation and coverage of billions of miles. Realistic camera models are moving more and more into focus, as simulations need to be more then photo-realistic, they need to be physical-realistic, representing the actual camera system onboard the self-driving vehicle in all relevant physical aspects – and this is not only true for cameras, but also for radar and lidar. But when the camera simulations are becoming more and more realistic, how is this realism tested? Actual, physical camera samples are tested in laboratories following norms like ISO12233, EMVA1288 or the developing P2020, with test charts like dead leaves, slanted edge or OECF-charts. In this article we propose to validate the realism of camera simulations by simulating the physical test bench setup, and then comparing the synthetical simulation result with physical results from the real-world test bench using the established normative metrics and KPIs. While this procedure is used sporadically in industrial settings we are not aware of a rigorous presentation of these ideas in the context of realistic camera models for autonomous driving. After the description of the process we give concrete examples for several different measurement setups using MTF and SFR, and show how these can be used to characterize the quality of different camera models.

Typhoons and typhoon waves can cause disasters in coastal areas around the world. The Taiwan Strait often experiences typhoons, especially in summer. Numerical models have been adopted to predict typhoons and reduce losses. The Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model is widely used in typhoon simulations, and the Simulating WAves Nearshore (SWAN) model performs well in wave simulations. However, significant uncertainty remains in terms of choosing suitable WRF physical parameterizations in different situations. To evaluate the effect of WRF physical parameterizations on wind and wave simulations, 27 simulation experiments were designed. Three typhoon events (Goni, Dujuan, and Meranti) with different tracks that influenced the Taiwan Strait were simulated. Three parameters (wind speed, wind direction and significant wave height) were assessed using Taylor diagrams, and it was found that the best simulation experiment changed according to typhoon tracks and physical parameters. In wind speed simulation, the best simulation experiment is 12 for typhoon Dujuan and 19 for typhoon Goni and Meranti. From the perspective of wind direction simulation, experiments 26, 23, and 2 performed best for typhoons Goni, Dujuan, and Meranti. And experiments 19, 1, and 20 had the best performances in significant wave height simulation for typhoons Goni, Dujuan, and Meranti. The WRF-SWAN model using the best simulation experiment reduced the error and exhibited good performance in the wind and wave simulations. Skill scores of three parameters were all over 70 for typhoon Goni and 80 for typhoon Dujuan and Meranti. The applicability of the best simulation experiments was demonstrated in typhoon simulations with similar tracks. The accuracy of the wave simulation depended on wind speed, wind direction, and their interaction. In addition, a scheme’s sensitivity changed with different typhoon tracks. This study provides references for designing physical parameterizations for use with the WRF-SWAN model, which may help to simulate typhoons and typhoon waves in the Taiwan Strait more accurately in the future.

Production errors, material properties and applied loads of the gear are stochastic .Considering the influence of these stochastic factors, reliability of gear is studied. The sensitivity analysis of random variable can reduce the number of random variables. Simulating random variables, a lot of samples are generated. Using the Monte Carlo simulation based on the sensitivity analysis, reliabilities of contacting fatigue strength and bending fatigue strength can be obtained. The Monte Carlo simulation approaches the accurate solution gradually with the increase of the number of simulations. The numerical example validates the proposed method.

In vielen Bereichen der Tagebautechnik spielt die Zerkleinerung von Material/ -strömen eine wesentliche Rolle, wobei sich je nach Material verschiedene Anforderungen an das Brechersystem ergeben. In Folge dessen werden Brecher auftragsspezifisch, meist für einen speziellen Gesteinstyp oder Einsatzort entwickelt oder modifiziert. Eine aussagekräftige Prognose der im Bruchprozess auftretenden Lasten auf den Brecher ist somit essentieller Bestandteil im Entwicklungsprozess. Ein viel versprechender Ansatz, um das Materialverhalten in der Lastprognose zu berücksichtigen, ist die numerische Simulation des Materialbruchverhaltens mit Hilfe der Diskreten-Elemente-Methode (DEM). Das Verhalten der sogenannten Partikel wird über Kontakt- und bond-Modelle beschrieben und soll das makroskopische Verhalten des jeweiligen Gesteins möglichst realitätsnah abbilden. Die Problematik ist, dass in SimulationX® keine Module zur DEM-Simulation vorhanden sind und umgekehrt in der DEM-Simulationsumgebung LIGGGHTSG® (LAMMPS improved for general granular and granular heat transfer simulations) keine derartige Maschinensimulation möglich ist. Der Ausweg ist die Co-Simulation zweier unterschiedlicher Simulationsumgebungen durch die Nutzung des ,,Functional Mock-Up Interface“-Standards (FMI). Berechnungsergebnis sind die dynamischen Lasten auf den Brecher unter Berücksichtigung des Materialverhaltens. Somit können früher in der Brecherentwicklung Prognosen zu auftretenden Lasten getroffen und Einflussuntersuchungen von Maschinenkonfigurationen zur Effizienzsteigerungen durchgeführt werden, was zuvor auf Grund des Einzelanfertigungscharakters nicht möglich oder nicht wirtschaftlich war.

Exponential growth in computer technology, both in terms of individual CPUs and parallel technologies over the past decades has triggered rapid progress in large scale simulations. However, despite these achievements it has become clear that many conventional state-of-the-art techniques are ill-equipped to tackle problems that inherently involve multiple scales in configuration space. Our difficulty is that conventional ("time driven" or "time stepped") techniques update all parts of simulation space (fields, particles) synchronously, i.e. at time intervals assumed to be the same throughout the global computation domain or at best varying on a sub-domain basis (in adaptive mesh refinement algorithms). Using a serial electrostatic model, it was recently shown that discrete event techniques can lead to more than two orders of magnitude speedup compared to the time-stepped approach. In this research, the focus is on the extension of this technique to parallel architectures, using parallel discrete event simulation. Previous research in parallel discrete event simulations of scientific phenomena has been limited This thesis outlines a technique for converting a time-stepped simulation in the scientific domain into an equivalent parallel discrete event model. As a candidate simulation, an electromagnetic hybrid plasma simulation is considered. The experiments and analysis show the trade-offs on performance by varying the following factors: the simulations model characteristics (e.g. lookahead), applications load balancing, and accuracy of simulation results. The experiments are performed on a high performance cluster, using a conservative synchronization mechanism. Initial performance results are encouraging, demonstrating very good parallel speedup for large-scale model configurations containing tens of thousands of cells. Overheads for inter-processor communication remain a challenge for smaller computations.

The continual growth of computing power in small devices has motivated the development of novel approaches to optimizing operational systems efficiently and effectively. These optimization problems are often so complex that solving them analytically may be difficult, if not prohibited. One method for solving such problems is to use online simulation. However, challenges in using online simulation include the issues of responsiveness (e.g., because of communication delays), scalability, and failure resistance. To tackle these issues, this study proposes embedding online simulations into a network of sensors that monitors the system under investigation. This thesis explores an approach termed “ad hoc distributed simulation,” which is based on embedding online simulations into a sensor network and adding communication and synchronization among simulators to model operational systems. This approach offers several potential advantages over existing approaches: (1) it can provide rapid response to system dynamics as well as efficiency since data exchange is local to the sensor network, (2) it can achieve better scalability to incorporate more sensors, and (3) it can provide better robustness to failures because portions of the system are still under local control. This research addresses several statistical issues in this ad hoc approach: (1) rapid and effective estimation of the input processes at model boundaries, (2) estimation of system-wide performance measures from individual simulator outputs, and (3) correction mechanisms responding to unexpected events or inaccuracies within the model. This thesis examines ad hoc distributed simulation analytically and experimentally, mainly focusing on the accuracy of predicting the performance of open queueing networks. First, the analytical part formalizes the ad hoc approach and evaluates its accuracy at modeling certain class of open queueing networks with regard to the steady-state system performance measures. This work concerning steady-state metrics is extended to a broader class of networks by an empirical study, which presents evidence to show that the ad hoc approach can generate predictions comparable to those from sequential simulations. Furthermore, a “buffered-area” mechanism is proposed to substantially reduce prediction bias with a moderate increase in execution time. In addition to those steady-state studies, another empirical study targets the prediction accuracy of the ad hoc approach at open queueing networks with short-term system-state transients. This study demonstrates that, with slight modification to the prior design of the ad hoc queueing simulation method for those steady-state studies, system dynamics can be well modeled. The results, again, support the conclusion that the ad hoc approach is competitive to the sequential simulation method in terms of prediction accuracy.

Radio access technologies for cellular mobile networks are continuously being evolved to meet the future demands for higher data rates, and lower end‐to‐end delays. In the research and development of LTE, radio network simulations play an essential role. The evolution of parallel processing hardware makes it desirable to exploit the potential gains of parallelizing LTE radio network simulations using multithreading techniques in contrast to distributing experiments over processors as independent simulation job processes. There is a hypothesis that parallel speedup gain diminishes when running many parallel simulation jobs concurrently on the same machine due to the increased memory requirements. A proposed multithreaded prototype of the Ericsson LTE simulator has been constructed, encapsulating scheduling, execution and synchronization of asynchronous physical layer computations. In order to provide implementation transparency, an algorithm has been proposed to sort and synchronize log events enabling a sequential logging model on top of non‐deterministic execution. In order to evaluate and compare multithreading techniques to parallel simulation job distribution, a large number of experiments have been carried out for four very diverse simulation scenarios. The evaluation of the results from these experiments involved analysis of average measured execution times and comparison with ideal estimates derived from Amdahl’s law in order to analyze overhead. It has been shown that the proposed multithreaded task‐oriented framework provides a convenient way to execute LTE physical layer models asynchronously on multi‐core processors, still providing deterministic results that are equivalent to the results of a sequential simulator. However, it has been indicated that distributing parallel independent jobs over processors is currently more efficient than multithreading techniques, even though the achieved speedup is far from ideal. This conclusion is based on the observation that the overhead caused by increased memory requirements, memory access and system bus congestion is currently smaller than the thread management and synchronization overhead of the proposed multithreaded Java prototype.

AbstractAs significant policies are based on their expected outcome in computer simulations, literacy of such simulations is necessary for political participation. In this paper, we propose ways to increase such simulation literacy. We discuss simulation literacy from a theoretical perspective and argue for simulating evacuations as a simple and potent topic to increase simulation literacy. Additionally, we present , a novel educational tool to simulate the evacuating of buildings (not only) for classrooms. Lastly, we show different teaching scenarios and exercises for the usage of in an exemplary way. and further teaching material is available online at www.evadid.it.

AbstractSimulation is a proven technique that uses computational, mathematical, and machine learning models to represent the physical characteristics, expected or actual operation, and control strategies of a building and its energy systems. Simulations can be used in a number of tasks along the deep renovation life cycle, including: (a) integrating simulations with other knowledge-based systems to support decision-making, (b) using simulations to evaluate and compare design scenarios, (c) integrating simulations with real-time monitoring and diagnostic systems for building energy management and control, (d) integrating multiple simulation applications, and (e) using virtual reality (VR) to enable digital building design and operation experiences. While building performance simulation is relatively well established, there are numerous challenges to applying it across the renovation life cycle, including data integration from fragmented building systems, and modelling human-building interactions, amongst others. This chapter defines the building performance simulation domain outlining significant use cases, widely used simulation tools, and the challenges for implementation.

AbstractWith the increased use of simulations as investigative tools in various scientific fields, the question naturally arises as to how these simulations are epistemically justified. One natural approach is to insist that the numerical aspects of simulation justification be performed separately from the physical aspects, but Winsberg (2010) has argued that this is impossible for highly complex simulations. Based on a survey and close examination of a range of astrophysical MHD codes and their attendant literature, I argue that insisting on a strict separation of these aspects of simulation justification is neither epistemically necessary nor advisable.

A navigation channel improvement study for Mobile Harbor was conducted by the US Army Corps of Engineers, Mobile District (CESAM), and the Alabama State Port Authority. The US Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) assisted CESAM in assessing channel modifications using ERDC’s Ship/Tow Simulator through a Feasibility Level Screening Simulation study in 2017 and through a more comprehensive ship-simulation study in 2020. During the 2020 study, a safety concern was identified related to vessel interactions between a transiting vessel passing docked vessels at the McDuffie Coal Terminal located along the main federal channel. In the previous ship-simulation studies, the docked vessels were represented as targets, which means the ships are visually represented but no hydrodynamic interaction is captured. To fully assess this interaction, a surge-analysis study was completed in 2022 that used hydrodynamic models to represent docked vessels with representative mooring conditions. This study assessed several proposed navigation channel expansions across from the McDuffie Coal Terminal over the course of six testing days with four pilots. Assessment of the proposed modifications was accomplished through analysis of ship simulations completed by experienced local pilots, track plots, run sheets, and final pilot questionnaires.

This report presents a number of newly added features to the OBS software relevant to the dynamic simulation of pipelines. The additions include a function to extract on-bottom wave induced velocities and hydrodynamic forces on a given length of pipeline with arbitrary distribution of the nodes; a new dynamic simulation module to perform dynamic simulations for a single pipe node; two new soil models including the Verley and Sotberg for sand as well as a custom soil model as per the approach recommended in DNV-RP-F114. The added soil models are implemented in the dynamic solver, which provide full dynamic simulation of pipelines in two dimensions.

The US Army Engineer Research and Development Center, Coastal and Hydraulics Laboratory (CHL), used the Ship/Tow Simulator to evaluate navigational conditions for the US Army Corps of Engineers, St. Louis District (MVS), proposed 1,200 feet (ft) lock chamber at Lock and Dam 25 in a tow simulation study. The study considers the impacts to navigation throughout construction sequences of the proposed 1,200 ft lock chamber and the final completed project. Testing occurred at CHL in October–November 2022 with five industry tow pilots. A total of 47 unique test conditions for a total of 187 ship-simulation exercises were evaluated. All final project simulations indicated that the design is feasible. When testing the construction scenarios of the design, it was evident that a tug-assist boat would be necessary for entering the 600 ft lock for both approaches. Results found that the intermediate wall construction should begin at the existing structure and progress downstream. Entering the 600 ft lock from the pool side was additionally completed successfully; however, modifications are needed for entering from the tailwater side. Ultimately, the results of this study will aid MVS in the design plan and decision-making regarding the proposed lock.

In 2020, the US Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC), Coastal and Hydraulics Laboratory, provided technical oversight during a navigation study to assist the Galveston District evaluation of different channel widening alternatives for larger ships transiting the Houston Ship Channel (HSC), Texas. The widening proposals encompassed several areas of the HSC including the Bay Section, the Bayport Ship Channel, Barbours Cut Channel, and the Bayou Section. The study was performed at the San Jacinto College Maritime Technology and Training Center (SJCMTTC) Ship/Tug Simulator (STS) Facility in La Porte, TX. The SJCMTTC STS is a real-time simulator; therefore, events on the simulator happen at the same time rate as real life. A variety of environmental forces act upon the ship during the simulation transit. These include currents, wind, waves, bathymetry, and ship-to-ship interaction. Online simulations of the project were conducted at SJCMTTC over a 3-week period – May through June 2020. Several mariners including Houston Pilots and G&H tugboat Captains participated in the testing and validation exercises. ERDC oversight was performed remotely because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Results in the form of engineering observations, track plots, and pilot interviews were reviewed to develop final conclusions and recommendations regarding the final design.

As part of the AutoDrive project, OpenPASS is used to develop a cognitive-stochastic traffic flow simulation for urban intersection scenarios described in deliverable D1.14. The deliverable D4.20 is about the design of the modules for the stochastic traffic simulation. This initially includes an examination of the existing traffic simulations described in chapter 2. Subsequently, the underlying tasks of the driver when crossing an intersection are explained. The main part contains the design of the cognitive structure of the road user (chapter 4.2) and the development of the cognitive behaviour modules (chapter 4.3).

This document is intended to give an overview of the validation of the human subject study, conducted in the driving simulator of the Chair of Traffic and Transportation Psychology (Verkehrspsychologie – VPSY) of the Technische Universität Dresden (TUD), as well of the validation of the stochastic traffic simulation developed in the AutoDrive project by the Chair of Automotive Engineering (Lehrstuhl Kraftfahrzeugtechnik – LKT) of TUD. Furthermore, the evaluation process of a C-AEB (Cooperative-Automatic Emergency Brake) system is demonstrated. The main purpose was to compare the driving behaviour of the study participants and the driving behaviour of the agents in the traffic simulation with real world data. Based on relevant literature, a validation concept was designed and real world data was collected using drones and stationary cameras. By means of qualitative and quantitative analysis it could be shown, that the driving simulator study shows realistic driving behaviour in terms of mean speed. Moreover, the stochastic traffic simulation already reflects reality in terms of mean and maximum speed of the agents. Finally, the performed evaluation proofed the suitability of the developed stochastic simulation for the assessment process. Furthermore, it could be shown, that a C-AEB system improves the traffic safety for the chosen test-scenarios.

The purpose of this guideline is to make practitioners aware of simulation approaches for the evaluation of tourism projects. Simulation approaches are particularly useful when experimental or economic approaches for project evaluation are not feasible. For example, it usually is not possible to roll out a tourism-promotion program for a randomly chosen "treatment group" while excluding the program's benefits for a "control group" at the tourist destination. The guideline explains why a simulation approach is useful for tourism impact analysis, what a simulation model for the economic analysis of tourism impacts looks like, and data requirements. With the help of an illustrative two-island model, the guideline shows how to construct different kinds of simulation models and how to use simulations to quantify the costs and benefits of tourism and tourism projects. The guideline concludes by discussing some specific IDB projects in which this methodology has been used for tourism impact analysis. The primary goal of this paper is to make development practitioners aware of simulation approaches for tourism impact analysis and of how to integrate these approaches into their project proposals, budgets, and terms of reference for expert consultants.
