Abstract (sommario):
This study determines whether the institutional size has any relationship to institutional concerns for risk management and if institutional size is related to the effectiveness of sound risk management guidelines within collegiate sport club programs. A risk management self assessment instrument consisting of twenty-five sound risk management guidelines and a ranking of the five most important and most difficult to implement was developed. Using the risk management self-assessment instrument, this nation-wide study asked collegiate sport club administrators to assess the extent to which their programs effectively adhere to sound risk management guidelines and to determine what they deem to be the most important and the most difficult risk management concerns to implement. Between institutional population sizes of 0-3000, 3001-10000, 10001- 20000, and 20001-60500, no significant differences were detected in regards to overall effectiveness of risk management guidelines. Six of twenty-five individual statements had significant differences between institutional sizes. These statements' concerns were in regards to equipment, physical examinations, waivers, travel itineraries, site communication accessibility, and manuals. Analysis of the ranking of most important and most difficult concerns to implement indicated there was no significant differences between the institutional sizes in regards to risk management concerns for sport club programs. The most important concerns were: 1) Waivers, 2) Litigation prevention, 3) Facility inspection, 4) Travel-drivers, and 5) Manuals. The most difficult to implement concerns were: 1) Physical examinations, 2) First aid at competitions, 3) Coaching standards, 4) Equipment inspections, and 5) Travel-drivers. With no significant differences between institutional size groupings in either effectiveness or types of concerns, a standard of care regarding risk management appears to be in place across the country.

Huebert, Robert J. "Sports fans' media usage at a Kansas City Chiefs' fan club". Scholar Commons, 2010. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/1661.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The media play a major role in every part of American society by distributing content that has value to individuals, and a National Football League (NFL) sports fan club is no different. This study examines how members of a Kansas City Chiefs' fan club use media to stay connected to their team and socialize with fellow members. Social identification theory explains that when an individual comes together with one or more individuals with like-minded interests, they form social bonds. Their shared interests allow them to disseminate Chiefs' information through content gathered from media usage. To understand how the Chiefs' fans use media, the author conducted research at a Kansas City Chiefs' sports club at a local bar in a large Southeastern city in the United States. The researcher used observation, participation, and interviews to collect information on the media usage of fan club members. The results find that the majority of members logged on to KCStar.com and KCChiefs.com when they wanted to read about the team from sources that lived in the Kansas City Region. When the members wanted to follow the games live, one person listened to play-by-play on their cellular phone, while others followed Internet updates on sports Web sites, or watched the games on television with the other fan club members.

Rydings, D. R. "An examination of the resistance training practices within an elite senior English Premier League professional football club". Thesis, Liverpool John Moores University, 2018. http://researchonline.ljmu.ac.uk/8685/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Limited research data is available outlining the resistance training characteristics of elite football players. The aim of the first study (Chapter 3) was to compare approaches to calculating resistance training volume during 4 weeks of pre-season training in 23 English Premier League footballers. Volume was calculated using four different methods of quantification; Repetition volume (RV), Set Volume (SV), Volume Load (VL) and Maximum Dynamic Strength Volume Load (MDSVL). Overall there was a significant difference between resistance training volumes calculated by the different methods used to monitor resistance training load (P < 0.001). More specifically, significant differences were observed between RV and SV methods (P < 0.001), RV and MDSVL (P = 0.001), SV and VL (P = 0.010), SV and MDSVL (P = 0.033) and VL and MDSVL (P = 0.002). Only RV and VL methods were similar in the information they provided on training load (P = 0.411). While the lack of a gold standard measure of volume makes it is unclear which, if any, method represents the most accurate measure of volume the discrepancies between methodological approaches highlight that these different approaches are not directly transferable as strategies to monitor resistance training. The understanding of the differences between each method may therefore enable appropriate, situation specific, approaches to be designed and implemented for both practical and research purposes. The aim of the second study (Chapter 4) was to analyse the resistance training loads completed by an elite professional football team across a competitive season. Resistance training data was collected from 31 elite football players competing in the English Premier League over a 46 week period in the 2012-2013 season. A total of 1685 individual training observations were collected during the pre-season and in-season competition phases, with a median of 42 training sessions per player (range = 9 – 124). Training load data was separated into 7 blocks of 6 weeks for analysis. These periods included pre-season (6 weeks duration) and in-season (40 weeks duration) phases. Set volume was selected as a measure of total volume. Data was analysed using 3 separate linear mixed modelling analysis using the statistical software package R (Version 3.0.1). Weekly resistance training frequency (mean±SD) ranged from 1±1 to 2±1 sessions per week during the pre and in season phases. Significant differences in session frequency were seen between weeks 1-6 and weeks 7-12 (pre-season) (P ˂ 0.05), weeks 7-12 and weeks 13-18 (P ˂ 0.05), and weeks 7-12 and weeks 37-42 (P ˂ 0.05). Mean weekly training volume ranged from 18±16 to 30±24 sets.wk-1. The total training volume demonstrates a clear minimum during weeks 7-12. Significant differences in total training volume were also observed between weeks 1-6 and weeks 7-12 (pre-season) (P ˂ 0.01), weeks 7-12 and weeks 13-18 (P ˂ 0.05), and weeks 7-12 and weeks 19-24 (P ˂ 0.05). There was no significant difference in training intensity between weeks 1-6 (pre-season) and weeks 7-12. Training intensity during weeks 1-6 however was significantly lower than during weeks 13-18 (P ˂ 0.05), 19-24 (P ˂ 0.01), 25-30 (P ˂ 0.01), 31-36 (P ˂ 0.05), and 37-42 (P ˂ 0.01). Training intensity during weeks 7-12 was also significantly lower than during weeks 13-18 (P ˂ 0.01), 19-24 (P ˂ 0.05), 25-30 (P ˂ 0.05), 31-36 (P ˂ 0.05), and 37-42 (P ˂ 0.001). The findings would suggest that resistance training loading is limited during different periods of the season. This is predominantly as a consequence of low training frequency, potentially due to a high prevalence of competitive fixtures. The aim of the third study (Chapter 5) was to attempt to quantify the impact of resistance training completed by players, through evaluating the change in the lower body power outputs of an elite professional football team across a competitive season. Resistance training data was collected from 22 elite football players competing in the English Premier League over a 38 week period. A total of 246 individual power output observations were collected during the in-season competition phase. Power output of the lower body was assessed using a pneumatic resistance leg press machine with software and digital display (Keiser Sports Health Equipment Inc., Fresno, Ca). Data was analysed by means of linear mixed modelling analysis using the statistical software package R (Version 3.0.1). Power outputs ranged from 2200W to 4078W with a mean value of 3022±374W. Linear mixed effects show a significant effect of week on power output across the season (coefficient= 7.76W, p=0.0132). Specifically, when accounting for within player effects, power output increased 7.76W per week during the season. Individual weekly power coefficients ranged from +39.9W to -18.13W per week, thus indicating that the trend for increased power output across the season is not uniform for all the players. These data may suggest that lower body power performance is maintained or minimally enhanced over the course of a full competitive season in elite football players. Combined with the training load data previously examined in this thesis it can be concluded that whilst one resistance training session per week may be sufficient to avoid in season de-training or minimally improve power performance in elite football players, a frequency of two sessions per week may be necessary to obtain significant performance enhancements. In our fourth study (Chapter 6) we provide two case studies that outline and evaluate a structured approach to increasing resistance training loading with the primary goal of developing strength and power during the competitive season in elite football players. The purpose of our initial case was to examine a resistance training programme to enhance strength and power performance, alongside body composition during a period of rehabilitation from injury. The study intervention commenced following two weeks of recovery following the “Laterjet” surgical procedure. Initial assessments were performed for body composition via dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) (QDR Series Discovery A, Hologic Inc., Bedford, MA) and lower body power output via using a pneumatic resistance leg press machine with software and digital display (Keiser Sports Health Equipment Inc., Fresno, Ca). Assessments were repeated 8 weeks post-surgery, i.e. following 6 weeks of resistance training. The six-week intervention consisted of three strength training sessions per week for the initial 3 weeks, followed by 2 sessions per week for the subsequent 3 weeks. Training volume (number of sets) equalled a total of 20 sets total per session. Total increase in body mass over the intervention period equated to 5.4kg, of which 4.2 kg increase in lean mass and a 1.3 kg increase in fat mass. Peak power output increased by 21%. Power to weight ratio also increased by 4.4 %. These data illustrate that it is possible to increase physical performance when rapid short-term increase in resistance training load is completed. The purpose of our second case was to examine a resistance training programme to enhance both strength and power performance parameters during a full competitive season. The player plays as a goalkeeper, regularly playing for his club 1st team. Prior to the onset of this case study this player did not present with any current injuries. This season long intervention consisted of two phases of training. Phase 1 was 16 weeks in duration and represented the beginning to the mid-point of the season. During this phase the goal was to gradually and safely increase resistance training loading. Phase 2 was 20 weeks in duration and represented the mid-point to the end of the season. This phase represented a period of consistent high loading following the initial systematic increase in these variables.
Assessment data was collected at the beginning, mid-point and end of the 2013-14 season. The player was first assessed for body composition via DXA (QDR Series Discovery A, Hologic Inc., Bedford, MA). Secondly, lower body power output was assessed using a pneumatic resistance leg press machine with software and digital display (Keiser Sports Health Equipment Inc., Fresno, Ca). Finally, the player’s upper body strength was assessed via 6 repetition maximum assessments of the dumbell bench press and prone row. The player completed a mean weekly volume of 41±24 sets per week and a mean frequency of 2±1 sessions per week for the initial phase of the study. The player completed a greater mean weekly volume in the later phase of the season compared to the initial training period (65±28 set per week vs. 41±24 sets per week in the initial phase of the season). A greater mean session frequency was also associated with the second training phase (3±1 vs. 2±1 session per week). There was a total decrease in body mass over the initial intervention period of 4kg, of which 2.7kg decrease in fat mass and a further 0.9 kg decrease in lean mass. Over the second phase of the intervention there was a total increase in body mass of 1.2kg, of which 2.4kg increase in lean mass and 1.2kg decrease in fat mass. During the initial phase of training peak power output increased by 25%, whilst power to weight ratio increased by 30%. During the later phase peak power output increased by a further 9% whilst the power to weight ratio increased by a further 10%. Upper body pressing (Dumbell Bench press) and upper body pulling (Dumbell Prone pull) strength was also increased by 14% and 21% respectively during the initial phase and a further 19% and 24% respectively during the later phase of the season.

Richards, Jessica Anne. "Sports Space: A Conceptual Model of Everton Football Club Match-day Fan Movement". Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/15969.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
When a sport fan speaks of their football teams’ home ground, emotions relating belonging, ritual, and local territory are often evoked. This research examines the making of meaning behind the match-day experience. It highlights the importance of transitioning through physical locations in enhancing and maintaining the social, cultural and masculine histories of a sport fan community. Drawing on ethnographic data generated from participant observation and semi-structured interviews on Everton football club fans throughout the 2012-2015 seasons of Premier League football, I explore how physical and social environments influence and encourage various types of fan behaviour within particular locations, and argue that the football crowd is not a homogenous unit, but rather, is incredibly fractured and diverse in nature. It considers how a variety of fan subcultures existing in sports space experience match-day differently. Theoretically anchored in symbolic interactionism, socio-spatial theory, and gender theory, this research developed a model for match-day called ‘sports space’. Sports space consists of three zones: ‘unofficial zone’, ’community zone’ and the ‘stadium zone’. When combined, these three zones provide a clear socio-spatial sense of the match-day routine, which was informed and directed by the very research participants that create, engaged, and used these zones. This thesis offers an original contribution to the sociology of sport through focusing on multiple fan subcultures and the multiple locations that make up a match-day experience. These ideas can be tied to wider issues concerning the social organisation of sport crowds and how sport fans internalise the debates surrounding authentic and inauthentic ‘types’ of fandom. The key findings of this research suggest that architectural elements and the cultural meanings ascribed to them by fans are neither static nor unchanging. Whilst the match day routine reproduces and reinforces gendered and local identities and narratives, I argue it also creates space for counter-hegemonic and resistant practices and meanings. As a result of this research, a greater understanding of the ways a variety of fan subcultures perform, understand and engage with their fandom and fan identity is reached.

Abstract (sommario):

Football is the most popular sport in the world, and it continues to have a progressive annual increase in the number of active players and the number of games played per season, which in turn, leads to an increase in the frequency of injuries. Football is extensively researched worldwide, however, some current studies confirm that the results on football injury factors are limited, as well as inconsistent and incomplete. The main aim of this study was to examine interrelating factors of football injuries through the various age groups at a designated football club. The study aimed to expose the injury risk factors and patterns present in the various age groups.

Several studies on European players at the elite or professional level have shown a high risk of injury. However, the studies used different data collection methods, making it difficult to compare results. This suggested a need to standardise the definition of an injury and method of data collection. There are no data on injuries associated with football in South Africa, which makes it difficult to develop an evidence-based strategy to manage injuries associated with football. Therefore, in an attempt to address the deficiency on soccer related injuries in South Africa, a Professional Soccer League (PSL) team (AJAX CT) was monitored throughout the season by the medical support staff of the team using the F-MARC data collection system devised by FIFA. The main objective of this study was to undertake a retrospective epidemiological study documenting the incidence of injury in this team and the exposure time (practice and match) of the players over a full season.

Abstract (sommario):

The purpose of this directed project was to develop a nutrition education curriculum for competitive youth soccer players. This project is aimed to improve the nutrition knowledge deficit among female adolescents, thereby improving general health and athletic performance. This curriculum also considers the athletes’ familial dependence and provides nutrition resources to parents.

This is a five-part group and team education series designed to address the sport-, gender- and age-specific nutrition needs of the target population. Based on current research, adolescents perceive group education and discussion to be most useful. Each lesson includes handouts for reference and an interactive activity to enrich the educational experience.

An expert panel has reviewed this program and provided critical insight and recommendations for revisions. As verified by an expert review panel, this curriculum is evidence-based, current and applicable. This program was not pilot tested, but should be prior to implementation.

Abstract (sommario):
Our research try to show the efficacity of setting goal technical (Locke et Latham 1990) on learning and motivation in Physical Education and in Sport (Famose, 2001), and is interested more exactly in self-regulatory processes, notably within the framework of selfregulated learning (Famose, 1999). According to several motivational theories such as control theory and self-regulary motivation (Carver et Scheier, 1981; 1998), individuals set goals, then monitor the discrepancies between their goals and performances, and finally adopt adaptative response patterns in choosing to persist in striving for the goal or revise the goal. Several factors influence how individuals respond differently to discrepancy feedback. These factors include the attributions made regarding the causes of performance (Weiner, 1986), the amount of time provided for task performance (Williams, Donovan et Dodge, 2000), and goal orientation (Dweck et Leggett, 1999 ; Radosevich D. J. Et al. , 2004). Results of ours experimental research indicated that goal setting increase performance and that self-regulated learning has positive effects on strategies and on learning

Upton, Patrick Anthony Howard. "Epidemiology and prevention of rugby injuries amongst schoolboy, senior club and provincial rugby players in the Western Cape". Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/26754.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis comprises a series of independent investigations examining rugby injuries occurring to players from under 14 to senior provincial level in the Cape Province (now the Western Cape). The first two studies report data aimed at gaining a more detailed understanding of rugby injuries in specific populations or under specific conditions, whilst the remainder of the thesis reports injury data from both a retrospective and a prospective epidemiological survey involving the same 3990 boys from 25 high schools. Following publication of data showing a progressive rise in the number of spinal cord injuries in the Western Cape, coupled with a sustained media attack on the attitudes of the (then) South African Rugby Board, certain experimental law changes were introduced to South African schoolboy rugby in 1990 and 1991. The purpose of the law changes was either to make the game safer or to make it more open and flowing, or both. Accordingly, the studies described in chapters 4 -8 set out to analyse the effects of these law changes on the incidence and nature of rugby injuries. This was accomplished by comparing data with a similar study conducted in 1983 and 1984 in the same 25 schools (Roux, 1992). The study reported in chapter 2 determined whether the use of neoprene (thermal) pants might reduce the risk of hamstring injury amongst 60 senior club rugby players, all of whom had previously sustained a hamstring muscle tear. The rationale was that the few seasons prior to this 1992 study had been characterised by an increasing use by rugby players of thermal or neoprene pants; a practice which seemed to have evolved spontaneously and without any scientific assessment of its value. We concluded that the wearing of thermal pants can reduce the risk of hamstring injury during rugby. However, other risk factors for injury are probably more important. These include levels of preseason physical fitness, correct warm up and stretching procedures before activity and adequate rehabilitation before returning to activity following injury. The objective of the study reported in chapter 3 was to determine the influence of preseason strength and endurance training on risk of injury in rugby players from two South African provincial teams during the 1992 rugby season. Players from one province followed a supervised scientifically-designed physical training programme, while those from the other did not follow a structured programme. The findings of the study, the first study to prove the relationship between pre-season preparation and early season injury, showed that inadequate pre-season endurance training is a major contributor to the high injury rate at the beginning of the season amongst provincial rugby players. Further, strength and endurance training are interrelated as risk factors. Thus, compared to players with adequate strength and endurance training, those with adequate strength training and insufficient endurance training are at greatest risk of injury, followed by players with insufficient strength and endurance training. It was also shown that contact practices 2 days after inter-provincial match contributed more to an increased number of injuries than to success; that "niggling" injuries may develop into more serious injury if players attempt to "play through" them; and that the lack of structured treatment and rehabilitation of an injury places players at risk of being re-injured.

Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of this study is to examine if the experiences of volunteers within women s rugby at both rugby clubs and at the 2010 Women s Rugby World Cup (WRWC) in England provide the basis for the continuation of such activities as well as the transfer of volunteer effort to event-based or club-based activity within the specific sports concerned or across sports to contribute towards society s broader sporting needs. Sport volunteering in the UK accounts for 26% of the total formal voluntary activity, and largely takes place within the Voluntary Sport Club (VSC) system (Sport England, 2003). It provides the basis for the development of grassroots sports. Sport volunteering also takes place at sport events which provide the foundation for elite level sport development. It is known, however, that if the volunteering experience is satisfying then this may lead to higher levels of commitment with the sports organization, the event or the voluntary cause, which may affect volunteers longevity and intentions to continue volunteering (Doherty, 2009). Women s rugby was selected as a case study, as the 2010 Women s Rugby World Cup was held in England. This facilitated comparisons between club and event volunteers. With the cooperation of the Rugby Football Union for Women (RFUW), research participants were identified and recruited via an email invitation including a link to an internet-administered questionnaire. A total of 70 individuals that volunteered for the 2010 WRWC and 168 volunteers involved in the women s rugby clubs completed the online survey. The results indicated that overall and despite some variation in the emphasis of the findings there is evidence in support of the relevance of the widely known determinants of volunteering such as motivation to volunteer, socio-demographic characteristics, satisfaction with the volunteering experience, engagement to sport and volunteering at to the continuation of future club or event volunteering as well as its transfer to other rugby and other sport events. Consequently, event organisers should work closely with club authorities to help volunteers to make a better connection from their club to the sport more widely and with the role of clubs and events to support the sport generally, to develop a shared identity in both clubs and events, that is across the whole sporting experience and to increase volunteers development opportunities through deploying their efforts in more than one setting which may then lead to the development of social capital.

Companies recognized as brands increase their brand value compared to companies that are not recognized as brands. Brand Image is one of the constituent elements of brand equity. It is constructed of tangible and intangible components present in consumers’ mind. In our post-modern societies consumers’ tastes, aspirations and behaviour change and brands adapt their products to the expectations of their customers and prospects. The brand image impact on the purchasing intentions and measuring instruments exist to assess the predictability of purchase for products offered by the brand. Therefore the corporates have to know their customers based brand image. In France, the professional clubs of team sports as football and rugby have opted for a status similar to companies in other sectors and some of them have become brands in their own right. The sport entertainment industry is a singular one and its most famous representative the football industry requests a specific approach. The results provided by the developed methodology reveal the factors that influence the sport spectators’ perceptions of the French clubs and reflect at the same time an essential part of football clubs’ brand equity

Abstract (sommario):
Using data from the 2006 – 2013 English Premier League (EPL) seasons, this paper finds evidence that the Home Grown policy does not provide a differential effect. As a consequence of the ruling, however, EPL clubs have generally acquired more English players. While English players are detrimental to a club’s ability to achieve a top 4 finish in the pre-policy period, this paper finds that English players positively influence top clubs in the post-policy period. More specifically, a successful club in the pre-policy period is 18% more likely to achieve a top 4 finish in the post-policy period by acquiring more English players in response to the Home Grown ruling. Furthermore, these top clubs are able to maintain their pre-policy competitiveness by outspending their counterparts to acquire the most talented Englishmen. As such, this paper also finds that increasing club transfer expenditures favors EPL club success in the post-policy period.

Abstract (sommario):

This capstone project lays the groundwork for launching a non-profit soccer club in East Los Angeles focused on using soccer as the motivation to develop student athletes academically and as leaders in their school, home, and community. There is a need for sport opportunities in underserved neighborhoods, many benefits that being a part of a sports team can have, and sports development programs currently operating that are doing it well. Elite youth soccer in the United States is available only to those with money and parental support. East Los Angeles is barren of any such opportunity with poor local fields, gang violence, single-family homes, less than ten percent of residents with a bachelors degree, and roughly one-third below the poverty line. This club will work to overcome these obstacles by providing opportunity for elite soccer, mentoring, and tutoring in a safe, fun, and respectful environment.

Abstract (sommario):
Physical activity in youth has many benefits, but parallel to these benefits, sport related injuries pose considerable risks.  It is important to public health to address sport related injuries, particularly those affecting young people, who comprise the majority of participants in organised sport in Sweden.  The first study in this research showed that inspections of local sport environments, where injuries often occur, did not occur uniformly. Two additional studies pointed out the need for better surveillance of injuries, and described the use of ambulance attendance reports as a possible improvement to current surveillance systems, with a possibility to improve safety for youth and other sport participants. Two other studies identify risk factors that were specific to football and climbing sports, which can be used to guide targeted safety interventions for the young participants of these sports.  The studies, taken as a whole, provide new information about the factors associated with sport related injuries, particularly for young people, and point out the need for better sport injury surveillance, improved inspection strategies for fields maintained by organised sport clubs in local communities, and the need to address risk factors specific to different sport activities.

Telfer, Hamish McDonald. "The origins, governance and social structure of club cross country running in Scotland, 1885-1914". Thesis, University of Stirling, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/1893/99.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The study examines a particular aspect of the development of athletics in Scotland. The first organised clubs for the sole purpose of purely athletic competition in the contemporary sense, were cross country clubs known as harrier clubs. Through investigation of the origins, governance and the social structure of harriers clubs, the study connects these three fundamental themes in understanding sport within broader social historical study. In this study the origins of cross country running are set within a theoretical framework which recognises the nature of the urban and rural environments which defined the sport. The sport’s early growth and governance in Scotland is set alongside the broader ideological position of the ‘amateur’. Additionally, club organisation promoted the clubs as cultural institutions. Clubs served as a focus for male sociability and elevated the status of membership of the harriers. Membership meant more than just sporting engagement; it included social and civic standing. The purpose and function therefore of early clubs extended beyond participation. This study demonstrates how membership of cross country clubs conferred upon its members a status, establishing harriers clubs as important social institutions. This research shows how social networks within sport replicated society more broadly. The significance of the contribution of cross country clubs to the development of Scottish sporting culture is therefore implicit. Harriers clubs were the epitome of the complexity of sporting engagement representing both respectability and liminal behaviour.

Abstract (sommario):
Background Keller (2009) states that brand equity and the crucial intangiblevalue a brand brings to organizations is perhaps one of the most important marketing topics discussed in recent years. As the competitive market and branding environment for companies are fierce, the sport industry has gradually become more competitive and professional in many aspects of their operations as well. Researchers have gone to the extent of claiming that a brand is the most important asset of a sports team and that the brand provides direction and meaning for sports associations as well as for their followers. Still, market studies have indicated that sport associations often lack appropriate branding strategies and particularly for teams below the professional level, research have been limited in these areas. Purpose The purpose of this thesis is to examine what strategies and actions lower level Swedish ice hockey teams use in order to create and strengthen their brand. Method A hermeneutic view and inductive approach have been applied for this thesis. The purpose and research questions of this thesis have been answered with the help of seven qualitative, semistructured in-depth interviews with lower level sport club managers. Frame of reference Theory is based on two approaches to how teams can build and leverage their brand. While a model by Richelieu (2003) illustrates a strategic construction of the sports brand, the Spectatorbased brand equity model by Ross (2006) is more concerned with how controllable and uncontrollable factors contributes to the two main components of spectator based brand equity, namely brand awareness and brand associations. Conclusions The conclusion withholds the answer to the four research questions and purpose designed for this thesis. The findings indicate that teams are starting to realize the importance of a strong brand, particular to meet increased customer expectations for the game experience are considered important to create positive brand associations. An important finding have been the lack of communication and interaction teams seem to have with their customers in order to establish a clear brand identity and position in the market. The findings also indicate some characteristics particular to the lower level setting e.g. the dependence on volunteer workers and how the lack of long-term financial responsibility have impacted the management and development of a strong brand.

Abstract (sommario):
This event study analyzes the share price reactions of the owning corporation investors in relation to the Chinese and Korean football clubs' success. Guangzhou Evergrande FC, Beijing Guoan FC, Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors FC, and Pohang Steelers FC are examined which are owned by Evergrande Group, CITIC Group, Hyundai Motors Company, and POSCO Group, respectively. It is assumed that successful events of the football clubs such as winning championships and major players and head coach acquisitions will have a positive boost to the daily returns of the owning corporations. The results are strongest for Pohang Steelers FC but other football clubs also suggest similar trends. The findings offer some tangible support for the assumption that the recent global arms race in transfer spending by football clubs can create value for the owners and suggest that the investments may lead to positive returns.

Naughton, R. J. "An investigation into the nutritional habits of academy players at a single English Premier League club". Thesis, Liverpool John Moores University, 2018. http://researchonline.ljmu.ac.uk/8827/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Within youth soccer high training and match loads warrant appropriate nutritional attention, although research assessing the nutritional intake and habits of youth soccer players is scarce. This thesis aimed to investigate habits and explore experiences of dietary intake methods in an English Premier League youth academy. Study one (Chapter 4) quantified the energy, macro and micronutrient intake of players from age groups under (U) 13 to U18 (7-day food diary, n = 59). Results showed players across all ages were in energy deficit, with low carbohydrate intake, and a large individual variability for micronutrient intake in comparison to current recommendations. However, under-reporting may have influenced these results. Study two (Chapter 5), a qualitative approach, explored nutritional habits (n = 15) with study one participants using one-on-one interviews. The U15 – U18s players consciously periodise their carbohydrate intake throughout the week; U18s stated this was to aid body composition. When discussing their participation in the previous food diary study, U18s expressed that a quicker, more user-friendly method would be desirable. The third study (Chapter 6), therefore, assessed the use of smartphone technology to record dietary intake. Fulltime youth soccer players (n = 22) recorded their dietary intake on a single training day, using a smartphone application and a photography method respectively compared to 24-hr recall. The 24-hr recall provided significantly higher energy and macronutrient intake in comparison to the smartphone methods. This data suggests smartphone technology was more effective in tandem with 24-hr recall. To conclude, youth soccer players are in dietary energy and carbohydrate deficit, with variable micronutrient intake when compared to current recommendations and traditional 24-hr recall is recommend if using smartphone technology. Further research for the accurate quantification of dietary intake and energy demands is required. Dietary advice provision for youth soccer to reach current nutritional recommendations is warranted.

Abstract (sommario):
The objective of the study was to investigate the cumulative neurocognitive effects of repetitive concussive and subconcussive events in club level Rugby Union (hereafter rugby) during the course of one rugby season, in a combined group and individualized case-based approach. Amateur adult club level rugby players (n = 20) were compared with a non-contact control group (n = 22) of equivalent age, years of education and estimated IQ (p = > .05, in all instances), although the two groups were clearly differentiated on the basis of a history of reported concussions (p = < .05). Video analyses documented the tackling maneuvers observed amongst the players during all matches across the rugby season revealing a sobering average of more than a thousand tackles per player, excluding any contact practice sessions. Five rugby players (n = 5) who were observed to have a head jarring event were also isolated for individualized postconcussive follow-up analysis of their neurocognitive profiles. Measures included the ImPACT Verbal and Visual Memory, Visual Motor Speed and Reaction Time composites and the Purdue Pegboard. Independent and dependent statistical analyses were employed to compare the rugby versus control group neurocognitive test profiles at and between the three test intervals. Correlational analyses explored the association between concussion, tackling and neurocognitive test outcomes. Descriptive comparisons of individual neurocognitive test scores with normative data were employed for the case analyses. Taken together, the results implicated vulnerability amongst club rugby players on the motor and speeded tasks, with less robust indications on the memory tasks. While limited in terms of its small sample size, it is considered that the outcome of the study was rendered more robust by virtue of being methodologically multifaceted with heuristic implications for future research studies in the area. The novel inclusion of tackling data as well as fine-tuned case analyses, were of particular relevance in that regard. The results add to a growing body of literature that implicates deleterious neurocognitive effects in participants of a sport such as rugby due to repetitive head jarring incidents that are intrinsic to the game.

In 2011 Storvreta IK installed two solar collector systems in order to reduce the club’s electricity demand for domestic hot water. However, electricity use from 2012 to 2015 shows that the expected reduction in the electricity demand has not occurred. This project investigates the solar collector systems and the heat demand of Storvreta IK’s buildings in order to explain the “failure” in electricity savings. The results of the simulations show that the heat production of the solar collectors is lower than Storvreta IK’s expectations. This could be explained by that the domestic hot water is not used as much as Storvreta IK thought and the system is therefore over-dimensioned for their need. The rebound effect could be another reason to why the electricity saving is lower than expected.

Abstract (sommario):
The New Orleans Athletic Club, founded in 1872, is one of the oldest athletic clubs in the United States that still operates today. After the boom of the 1920s and increased revenues, the club was forced to confront the Great Depression and shift its emphasis on the "strenuous life" to the "social life" to survive. The club had capitalized on the popularity of boxing during the 1920s and just finished constructing a lavish new club house when the stock market crashed in 1929. With members losing their jobs, the popularity of boxing waning, and the club in dire financial straits, the club looked for alternative strategies to survive. Its "social life" strategy relied on the club's various political ties to cut expenses and increased incentives for membership, which led to a larger, albeit, limited presence of women at the club.

Abstract (sommario):
The stadium of Colombes is probably one of the most eminent French sports construction in the twentieth century. Indeed, in 1907, the installation which replaced the former racecourse became a stadium for the 1924 Olympic Games. Colombes was a place for the most important international events, but was especially the French national stadium until 1972 when the new Parc des Princes was built. French sport's witness during fifty years, Yves-du-Manoir' stadium, owned by Racing Club de France and the Comité National des Sports, is constantly linked with the question of a 100,000 seat big stadium. Despite being the French biggest sports installation, Colombes is a “by default stadium”, a wrecked attempt of a monumental project which has punctuated its whole existence. Therefore we first analyze the origins of this question at the beginning of the 20th century and then go back over the mechanisms which led to the construction of the Olympic enclosure. The study of its running and its management constitute an other main line. At last, we study the thwarted destiny of this stadium, the rivalry with other constructions, the negative image of the place and the threat of a monumental stadium

Abstract: Sport appears as a socio-cultural phenomenon, characterized as dynamic as the society itself. Its modern version dates from the late eighteenth century in England, and its expansion has been driven by institutions that fostered, in particular schools and sporting clubs. In contemporary times, the social and sports club is still one of the leading organizations promoting the sport, especially in the western world, like Brazil. However, in recent decades sport changed and is adapting to the globalized world, to the consumer society and to the speed of the media, manifesting itself in multiple ways and contributing to different segments of society. The social and sports club, in contrast, is divided between traditional aspects of its management and operation and the current demands of diversification and professionalization, which characterizes the current moment of crisis, particularly related to federate sports. From this perspective, the study addresses the interface between sport and social and sports club in order to understand the current moment in the Brazilian context, intending to signal new opportunities for social and sports club with the sport. For this, it describes the evolution of sport and the relationship of the social and sports club with the phenomenon since its modern --- to contemporary period, emphasizing the Brazilian context. From this theoretical discussion, the study advances to a case study in a Spanish sports club, "Club Basquet Coruña", a club that has shown success in providing basketball in the federate model, with an increase of 374.5% federated athletes linked to the club in the last five years and also results for their basketball adult team that led them to ascend in three professional leagues in Spain. I was made from semi-structured interviews with directors of the club in order to identify management actions that have made possible the sportive and institutional growth at the club interface with the possibilities of contemporary sport. The study has four specific objectives: (1) describe de relationship between sport clubs and sport over there specific periods: modern, transition and contemporary; (2) understand the social and sporting club in the Brazilian context, (3) study the sports club in the Spanish context, (4) signal to the possibilities of promoting the sport through club in the contemporary context, (5) signal for club improving through sport.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the innovation business model in sports and fitness club chain. The scope of the current management research, with open innovation and disruptive innovation, gradually expanded to business model. In our country, there are many empirical studies. Cabrales, Pelayo Corominas. "Sports marketing - management Real Oviedo: the rebirth of a historical Spanish football club". Master's thesis, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10071/17868.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Turnaround, as well as organizational recovery, has been gaining great importance due to the continuous examples of bankruptcy that have been showing up in the last decades. For football clubs this was not different, having an important economic impact as far back as 2000, leading to clubs disappearing, mostly in lower league divisions. The cause could not be always just a matter of earnings, but a misalignment or poor management skills, increased by different external and internal factors. This study aims at evaluating a real case in Spanish football, second league football club Real Oviedo, and tries to find the main factors that led to its decline and to almost declare bankruptcy. At the same time, the study focuses its effort on identifying the main factors that led the football club to a successful turnaround and recovery, trying to establish a probable process to be followed in future similar situations. To better grasp this case, relevant people that have been a part or are nowadays a part of the history of the club, have been inquired with semi-structured interviews to better understand the reasons and causes, supported by the club’s internal documents and data. In general, the results showed that the main factors for both decline and recovery are divided between internal, external, turnaround strategies and Resource Based View factors. Decline factors are focused mainly in poor management skills, and top management misalignment, among others. On the other hand, recovery had positive results when talking about financial health, and top management alignment, among other positive factors under study. For a successful and strong recovery, several aspects have to be considered, having management performance as one of the most important factors.

Regarding sports clubs, during the early period, sports clubs in Europe and America offered a variety of sports that had been popular for the nobilities, such as horseback riding and so on. The sports clubs back then featured several characteristics: 1. There were restrictions on the number of members and member status. People with specific professions and professionals were selected as the members, thus limiting the number of members; 2. The sports club activities were monotonous and limited in content and most of them involved the activities the nobilities engaged in the past. The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) specifically defined “social enterprise” in 2002, emphasizing that a social enterprise is a corporate organization with social benefits as its main business objective. The year-end surplus should be invested in business-oriented or community development related projects, rather than being allocated to shareholders or owners for profit maximization. It has been nearly 15 years since the establishment of the Landmark Club. Its activities, clubs, and internal structure have reached considerable maturity and completeness. Additionally, they offer cordial and attentive services and products that meet members’ needs to improve profitability, thereby retaining customer loyalty. Hence, through the literature reviews, the management models of sports clubs were first explored, and social responsibility and social enterprise were defined. Then, based on the business model and member structure of the Landmark Club, the management models of the regional sports clubs were discussed, and their correlation with social enterprises were put forth. Further, targeting the future objectives of the Landmark Club, coupled with the social corporate responsibility, improvement suggestions and comments were put forward. This paper is expected to provide some evidence to future studies on regional sports clubs and social corporate responsibility. The results show that through market positioning and self-positioning, the development model of the Landmark Club shall serve as a reference for public-owned fitness centers. As the Taipei City Government has also established health centers in different regions, by referring to the development model of the Landmark Club, the health centers in the regions can be transformed into gathering places of humanities in the communities. Instead of being just “gyms”, the sports culture and community developed can be deeply rooted, and the social function of the social enterprise (non-profit organization) can be brought out into full play.

Sylvester, Katherine. "Negotiating kendo capital and gendered identity in a Japanese sports university kendo club". Thesis, 2015. https://vuir.vu.edu.au/32319/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis explores how female Japanese sports university kendo practitioners negotiate their identity to accumulate kendo capital and personal meaning in the processes of club membership. To make sense of Japanese women’s sports university kendo, an ethnographic research project was conducted over an 18-month period starting in 2012. In culturally protected social fields such as kendo, ethnography is invaluable as a method as it provides new and exciting ways to understand and theorise the relationship between sport, culture and gendered identity. Evolving from warrior culture, kendo is considered to be one of Japan’s most traditional and treasured physical heritages. To preserve a sense of ‘traditional’ identity and cultural ownership, modern kendo, re-produces some aspects of Tokugawa period (1603-1868) warrior culture. The epicentre of modern kendo is within the education system. In Japan, sport clubs play a vital role in educating members with cultural values deemed beneficial for their futures. These values are conservative and can assist members in gaining government employment. Kendo clubs are highly gendered social spaces where women learn that their primary role in society is one of mother and wife. As a result of this social role projection, women receive less resources and development opportunities in kendo compared to men. In this way kendo formally institutionalises gender. Given the entrenched male proprietorship of kendo and its symbolic value, it is difficult to change how women are positioned in the field of kendo. However, as a result of their positioning, women can enjoy the freedom of expressing a ‘bigendered identity’ and experience intrinsic reward in kendo more so than men as they are bound to a separate sphere of oppressive systems and articulations. Albeit a result of patriarchy, women do experience agency and can positively create their own raison d'être through the practice of kendo.
