Objectives: To assess the sensitivity of the various discrimination indicesas screening test in beta-thalassemia trait patients in our population. Study design: Crosssectional descriptive study. Period: 1-Sep 2012 to 31-Jan 2013 (5 months). Settings: PathologyDepartment, District Head Quarters (DHQ) Hospital, Rawalpindi. Materials and Methods: Atotal of 150 diagnosed cases of beta thalassemia trait were included in the study. Study wasdone from 1-Sep 2012 to 31-Jan 2013 in DHQ hospital, Rawalpindi. Four discrimination indicesi.e. Mentzer, Shine & Lal, Srivastava, and Red cell Distribution Width Index were calculated forall the patients. The number of correctly identified cases were determined and sensitivity ofeach discrimination index was calculated accordingly. Results: The sensitivity in diagnosingbeta thalassemia trait patients was highest for Shine and Lal index (95%), followed by Mentzerindex (52% sensitivity), and then Srivasava index (46% sensitivity). Red cell distribution widthindex had poor sensitivity of 2% in our study. None of the discrimination indices showed 100%sensitivity. Conclusion: We concluded that Shine & Lal and Mentzer index are the most sensitiveindices. They can be used for cheap and quick screening of beta-thalassemia trait patients inlaboratories where advanced investigation tools are not available. Patients who give positiveresult for beta thalassemia trait with these indices may then be referred for further workup toconfirm the diagnosis.

Abstract (sommario):

Since 2017, a field experiment has been conducted in a dry area with 11 Czech hop varieties. The highest yields were achieved by the Uran variety (2.83 t/ha) and Saaz Shine variety (2.76 t/ha), which also exhibited the lowest yield variability, at 11.17% (Saaz Shine) and 12.53% (Uran). The lowest hop yield was recorded by the Harmonie variety (1.17 t/ha), which also showed high yield variability (30.92%). The Bohemie variety had the highest yield variability of hops at 35.26%. While the Gaia (14.66% w/w) and Uran (13.53% w/w) varieties had the highest alpha acid content. Conversely, the Mimosa variety showed the lowest alpha acid content (1.56% w/w) and also the lowest alpha/beta acid ratio (0.29). The Rubín variety reached the highest alpha/beta acid ratio (3.00). The Uran variety exhibited the lowest variability in alpha (6.16%) and beta (6.28%) acid content. In contrast, the Harmonie variety had the highest variability in alpha (59.02%) and beta (38.18%) acid content. The Uran and Saaz Shine varieties are the most suitable for the dry area. Additionally, the Gaia and Saaz Brilliant varieties showed good performance parameters. The hop varieties Vital, Gaia, Saaz Brilliant, and Saaz Shine had the most intense hop aroma, while the Boomerang and Uran varieties had a high intensity of spicy aroma.

Abstract (sommario):

Four new aroma hop varieties – Saaz Brilliant, Saaz Comfort, Saaz Shine and Mimosa – were registered in the Czech Republic in 2019. All of the new hop varieties have significantly higher yields than the traditional Saaz aroma variety. Saaz Comfort has the significantly highest content of alpha acids (5.59%) whereas Mimosa has the significantly lowest content of alpha acids (1.90%). The Saaz Comfort and Saaz Brilliant varieties show a variability of alpha acid content below 20%. The other hop varieties, Saaz Shine and Mimosa, as well as Saaz, have a variability of alpha acid content above 25%. Mimosa has the significantly highest content of beta acids (6.07%). Mimosa shows the highest average cohumulone content (29.29% rel.) whereas Saaz Comfort has the lowest cohumulone content (18.04% rel.). Saaz Comfort and Saaz Shine have the highest average contents of hop essential oils (0.84% w. and 0.75% w., respectively). The Saaz, Saaz Shine and Saaz Brilliant varieties show the significantly highest farnesene contents (13.47% rel., 12.50% rel. and 12.38% rel., respectively), which are higher than those of Saaz Comfort and Mimosa.

Beta thalassemia trait are more likely to have anemia which leading to intrauterine hypoxia and adverse uterine conditions. Adverse intrauterine environment has been shown to have a significant impact on the risk of low birth weight. Therefore, this study aims to investigate association between Shine and Lal index β-thalassemia trait screening results with anaemia and lowbirth weight. A retrospective study design was conducted based on medical records of mothers and their infants born in 2022 at a regional hospital, in East Nusa Tenggara. The inclusion criteria were being live birth, singleton births and gestational age >28 weeks. Mothers didn’t have complete records were excluded from study. Analysis uses chi-square test to evaluate the relationship between dependent and independent variables, This study identified 738 eligible samples. The incidence of suspected β-thalassemia trait according Shine and Lal Index was about 42.5%. There is a significant relationship between Shine and Lal β-thalassemia trait screening results with maternal anaemia and no relationship between Shine and Lal index β-thalassemia trait screening results and LBW

Background: Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) and beta thalassaemia trait (BTT) are two of the most common causes of microcytic anemia.It is essential to differentiate between the two, so as to avoid unnecessary iron therapy which is contraindicated in beta thalassaemia .We retrospectively evaluated the reliability of various indices for differential diagnosis of microcytosis and 𝛽-TT in the same patient groups .Methods: A total of 200 patients were evaluated. We calculated 6 discrimination indices in all patients with anemia or suspected beta thalassemia. None of the subjects had combined IDA and 𝛽-TT. The patient groups were evaluated according to the Mentzer, Shine and Lal, England and Fraser,Srivastava, Green and King, Ricerca.Results: According to percentage correctly diagnosed criteria, Ricerca and Mentzer index are considered as the two best discrimination indices in differentiation between β thalassemia trait and iron deficiency anaemia .Youden’s index showed the following ranking with respect to the indices’ ability to distinguish between 𝛽-TT and IDA, Ricerca index > Mentzer index > Green and King index > Srivastava index > Shine and Lal index > England and Fraser index.Conclusions: Ricerca and Mentzer index are considered as the two best discrimination indices in differentiation between β thalassemia trait and iron deficiency anaemia.Keywords: Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) and beta thalassaemia trait (𝛽-TT)

Abstract IL-6 is a major regulator of acute phase protein synthesis in the liver. It exerts its action via a plasma membrane receptor consisting of two subunits, a ligand binding 80-kDa glycoprotein and a 130-kDa glycoprotein involved in signal transduction. We genetically generated a soluble form of the 80-kDa subunit of the human IL-6R (shIL-6R) in mouse fibroblasts (NIH/3T3 cells). The shIL-6R added to human hepatoma cells (HepG2) amplified the induction of alpha 1-antichymotrypsin and haptoglobin by IL-6 at the mRNA and protein level. Moreover, a model for a liver permanently exposed to high IL-6 concentrations has been developed; HepG2 cells were stably transfected with human IL-6-cDNA; 10(6) of the transfected cells (HepG2-IL-6) synthesized and secreted 2 micrograms of IL-6 within 24 h. Incubation of these cells with endogenous or exogenous IL-6 did not result in acute-phase protein induction. However, these IL-6-desensitized cells responded to other cytokines such as leukemia inhibitory factor, transforming growth factor beta 1, and IFN-gamma, known to modulate acute phase protein synthesis in the liver. Incubation of HepG2-IL-6 cells with shIL-6R reconstituted their responsiveness to IL-6 in a dose- and time-dependent manner. The possible biologic role that might be played by the shIL-6R in disease is discussed.

Abstract (sommario):

A method of organizing an information cyber- physical system to assist in the mooring process has been considered in the article. It describes ways to organize the mooring of ships to the berth. The problems that occur during this operation have been listed. As the mooring process is labor- intensive and depends on the human factor, a system that will provide up-to-date real-time information to facilitate the mooring operation has been regarded. The structure and stages of development of the proposed solution have been described. The features of the selected elements have been indicated. Obtaining preliminary sensory results from two ports makes it possible to begin the next stage of system development.

The Lanna region, the main part of northern Thailand, is a place of ethnic diversity. In this study, we investigated phak-gard-dong (PGD), or pickled mustard green (Brassica juncea L. Czern.), for its beneficial bacteria content and to analyse the variations in bacterial compositions among the PGD of three different ethnolinguistic groups, the Karen, Lawa, and Shan. DNA was extracted from the PGD pickled brine, and 16S rRNA gene Illumina sequencing was performed. Metagenomic data were analysed and the results demonstrated that the dominant bacterial species were Weissella (54.2%, 65.0%, and 10.0%) and Lactobacillus (17.5%, 5.6%, and 79.1%) in the PGD of the Karen, Lawa, and Shan, respectively. Pediococcus was found only in the PGD of the Karen and Shan. Bacterial communities in PGD of the Lawa were distinctive from the other ethnic groups, both in the alpha and beta diversity, as well as the predicted functions of the bacterial communities. In addition, overall network analysis results were correlated to bacterial proportions in every ethnic PGD. We suggest that all ethnic PGDs have the potential to be a good source of beneficial bacteria, warranting its conservation and further development into health food products.

Abstract (sommario):

This project developed an in-vessel emission measurement system and emission evaluation protocol to aid air quality modellers, government regulators and industry. The work enables characterisation of emissions emitted in different ships using heavy fuel oil and operating under a full range of conditions such as at-berth, manoeuvring and ocean-going. Results from the project will improve the quality of input data to air quality modellers who assess the impact of ship emissions on coastal and port areas.

Deux nouveaux concepts, visant à reproduire la chimie radicalaire des diétains à l’aide de radicaux centrés sur le silicium, sont présentés à travers ce manuscrit. Le premier concept introduit les “silaboranes”, des molécules constituées d’un motif de type silane et d’un atome de bore. Ceux-ci ont pour la première fois été exploités comme générateurs de radicaux triméthylsilyle via l’utilisation de la réaction de SHi sur le silicium (Substitution Homolytique Intramoléculaire) à partir de disilanes. Des études cinétiques et de modélisation moléculaires de la réaction de SHi ont, entre autres, permis de rationaliser les résultats. Le potentiel des “silaboranes” en tant que substituts des diétains a été entrevu à travers des réactions d’additions radicalaires d’halogénures sur des éthers d’oxime sulfonylés. Le concept des "silaboranes" a ensuite été étendu à des hydrures de silicium, grâce à une réaction de transfert d’hydrogène intramoléculaire, permettant de produire des radicaux triphénylsilyles. Le second concept a révélé la capacité des allyl tris(triméthylsilyl)silanes pour reproduire les réactions radicalaires des diétains via une réaction de beta-fragmentation du groupement tris(triméthylsilyle). Ces substrats, source de radicaux tris(triméthysilyle) et simples d’accès, se sont avérés d’intéressants candidats pour assister l’addition de dérivés bromés et iodés sur des substrats sulfonylés de type allyl, vinyl et éther d’oxime
Two new concepts, aiming to substitute ditin radical chemistry by using silyl radicals, are developed throughout this manuscript. The first concept introduces “silaboranes”, molecules made up of a silane unit and a boron atom. For the first time, the ability of these precursors to generate trimethylsilyl radicals was demonstrated by using the SHi reaction at silicon (Intramolecular Homolytic Substitution) from disilanes. Besides, results are supported by kinetic and computationnal studies of the SHi reaction at silicon. Capacity of “silaboranes” to achieve tin-free radical processes was demonstrated thanks to radical addition of halogenated species on sulfonyl oxime ethers. “Silaboranes” concept was then extended to silicon hydrides using intramolecular hydrogen transfer as source of triphenylsilyl radicals. The second concept highlights the ability of allyl tris(trimethylsilyl)silanes to make possible tin-free radical reactions via beta-fragmentation of the tris(trimethylsilyl) group. These compounds, source of tris(trimethylsilyl) radicals and easily available, open very interesting perspectives in tin-free radical addition of bromides and iodides species on sulfonyl derivatives as allyl sulfones, vinyl sulfones or sulfonyl oxime ethers

Abstract (sommario):

This thesis is divided in three sections; the main project is described in the first part, while additional projects are developed in two appendixes. In the main project we studied YAP, the downstream effector of the Hippo pathway, a transcriptional co-factor that plays a fundamental role in de-differentiation, cell proliferation and transformation. While its upstream regulation has been extensively studied, its role as transcriptional co-factor is still poorly understood. We show that YAP co-adjuvates the transcriptional responses of Myc oncogene to promote cell proliferation and transformation; when both YAP and Myc are overexpressed, YAP is recruited on genomic sites pre-marked by Myc, TEAD and active chromatin and potentiate the expression of cell cycle genes regulated by Myc. In addition, we show that YAP promotes cell de-differentiation by antagonizing in cis the expression of liver-specific genes controlled by HNF4A master regulator, thus providing a mechanism on how YAP can revert the phenotype of a differentiated hepatocyte into a progenitor cell. In the first appendix we explain the mechanism of BRD4 inhibition, a promising strategy for the treatment of Myc-driven tumors. The efficacy of this strategy relies on the control of transcriptional elongation mediated by BRD4 on gene promoters, independently of the downregulation of Myc oncogene. Although the inhibition of BRD4 causes its genome-wide displacement on promoters, the effects on transcription are restricted to a subset of sensitive genes. This specificity relies on the fact that while most genes compensate the drop in elongation caused by BRD4 inhibition with further recruitment of RNA Pol2 on promoters and maintain a proficient mRNA transcription, vulnerable genes are not able to promote these compensatory effects, because RNA Pol2 recruitment on these promoters is already maximized. Our results show how the impairment of elongation genome-wide can affect specific transcriptional programs. In the second appendix we describe a new web application, Chrokit, aimed at analyzing genomic data in a fast and intuitive way. Chrokit handles a set of genomic regions of interest and performs several tasks on them, such as selecting particular subsets, computing overlaps and visualize reads enrichment of specific chromatin features interactively. The application is multiplatform and can be run on dedicated servers to maximize computational power and provide accessibility to multiple users simultaneously.

Under the context of a congested container terminal, solving the congested problem has become the most important issue to port operators. The study developed two mixed integer programming (MIP) models for the tactical berth template design problem. With the objective of cost minimization, the terminal operator determines the berth assignment and the service starting time of the potential calling ships on a cyclical basis with respect to a fixed length of planning horizon. The operator has the flexibility of denying a ship at the price of losing a ship-dependent revenue or berthing it within a specific time window. In particular, an early or late penalty cost is incurred, if the ship service starting time is deviated from the preferred target time. This study compared the performances of the two IP formulations, one directly using the binary variable to represent the decision of berth assignment and service sequencing and the other indirectly making use of the generalized set-partitioning model. It was found that the performance of the latter is much better. This study further designed a heuristic solution algorithm based on the classic maximum weighted matching problem with respect to the generalized set-partitioning formulation. Based on the numerical experiments, the model and the solution algorithm developed in this study are promising in enhancing the literature of the tactical planning of container terminals

Abstract DNA sequence analysis of the BET1 gene predicts a protein (142 amino acids) that is serine-rich at its amino-terminus. The BET1 sequence also predicts the presence of a 131-bp intron that contains a non-conserved 5*-splice site (GTATGA). BET1 shares certain structural features with BOS1. Both genes contain introns and encode small proteins that have a hydrophobic stretch of amino acids at or near their COOH-termini (Dascher eta/. 1991; Shim etal. 1991; Newman etal. 1992).

Abstract The energy available for a sailing ship is a combination of wind energy and the energy in the water. The wind energy propels the ship blowing into the sail and in this way generates the thrust. The energy in the water can be transformed into electrical energy by means of a hydrokinetic turbine. The electrical energy can be stored in a battery or it can be converted into hydrogen by means of an electrolyzer. In such a combination the ship is called an energy ship. In this work a new extended design method for the hydrokinetic turbine of the energy ship is presented and three different design variations based on Betz theory have been developed and verified with computational fluid dynamics CFD. The first Betz Standard (BS) design is based on the optimum turbine design according to Betz which is based on linear momentum theory. The second Betz Extended (BE) and third Propeller Like (PL) designs are also based on the theory of Betz but with an optimized extended airfoil length. The theory and the design methods for each turbine are presented. The setup and the results of the numerical simulations are shown in detail and the advantages and disadvantages of each design method are discussed. Especially the different turbine characteristics, i.e. the axial force acting on the turbine, the torque and power including their dimensionless coefficients are analyzed and compared. As an example, in a first analytical ideal design calculation according to the Betz theory, assuming a diameter of 890 mm and a ship velocity of 5.2 m/s, a power output of 25.8 kW was predicted for the BS design. With tip and profile losses the expected output is 21.9 kW. The results of the numerical calculation of the hydrokinetic turbine characteristics show that it has a typical behaviour as also found in wind turbines. The BS and BE design have its maximum power output near the design point at the design tip speed ratio λDBS = λDBE = 7. For the PL design λDPL is not known a priori but by means of the CFD results it is shown to be in the range of 4 < λDPL < 5. The BS design shows a maximum power output of about 17 kW with a power coefficient of cp = 0.4 at λOBS = 6.5. The BE and the PL designs show approximately the same maximum power output of about 21 kW with a power coefficient of cp ≈ 0.5 and hence are close to the predicted design output with losses. The BE and PL turbines show their maximum power output at λOBE = 5 respectively at λOPL = 4.2. However, the BE design has a much flatter power characteristics delivering the 21 kW over a much larger range of tip speed ratio, showing the advantage of this new design method. The extended airfoil surface of the BE design and the BS turbine design leads to a higher hydrodynamic resistance but also to a higher torque and power output. With those two designs, a power coefficient of almost 50% was achieved, quite close to the maximum theoretical possible power coefficient of Betz cp,Betz = 16/27 = 59.3%. Hence this is in the range achieved by wind turbines.

Liuheng LNG (Liquified Natural Gas) terminal is proposed to serve LNG carriers and LNG tank container ships. However, the capacity of this terminal may be limited by the long entrance channel and traffic rules for LNG transportation. Therefore, to evaluate the capacity of Liuheng LNG terminal, we establish an agent-based microscopic simulation model for ship operation (AMic-SMSO) to simulate the whole process of ship operation in and out of a port. We undertake a series of experiment scenarios to identify the bottlenecks and assess the throughput capability by analyzing waiting times, berth occupancies, and explore the effect of modifying the traffic rules on these indicators. The results show that this simulation model is a useful tool in determining whether traffic rules works well actually, especially for LNG terminal berth configuration plan.

Abstract Hot electron induced beta degradation has been observed from fiber optic transistors after multiple parametric testing. Beta degradation originated from increasing base leakage current due to the multiple testing. Base leakage current increases were directly related to the hot electron phenourenon at Si- SiO2 interface layer. The hot electron effect broke down the trivalent silicon and its hydrogen compounds (SisH) at the interface layer, which created mobile interstitial hydrogen atoms (Hi) and trivalent silicon atoms Si* (interface trap charges) at the same time. Typically, the -SisH forms during the post metallization anneal. This paper will outline the following topics: 1.) The generation of mobile hydrogen atoms and trap charges at the Si-SiO2 intedhce due to the hot electron phenomenon and its relationship to transistor beta degradation. 2.) A quantitative analysis of hydrogen atoms measured by Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS), and a direct relation-ship model between beta degradation and hydrogen profiles at the interface layer. 3.) Experimental result showing transistor beta recover as well as the repopulation of the hydrogen atoms at the interface layer after low temperature annealing (150 °C to 200 °C bake).

Moored ship behavior inside harbors and, therefore, the operational and security conditions at a port terminal does not have a straightforward relationship with local environmental conditions. Due to the diversity and complexity of the phenomena involved it is important to use a methodology that combines physical model tests with numerical simulations, taking advantage of potential synergies. Results of prototype measurements are also a key element to making the validation and calibration of both physical and numerical models possible. This paper focuses on studying the behavior of moored tankers using combined methodology. Aspects related with the inclusion in the numerical models of shallow water effects, non-linear characteristics of mooring lines and fenders, the influence of harbor boundaries and viscous damping are analyzed and discussed. The role of physical modeling as a tool to address/quantify some of the conditions and to provide data for the calibration of numerical models is presented, as well as the methodology defined for the study of the operational conditions at an existing berth. This methodology includes the development of a computer vision system to measure ship motion at the port terminal (prototype). Actual operational conditions at the berth are also described in the paper.

We developed a technical efficiency analysis of container ports in Latin America and the Caribbean using an input-oriented stochastic frontier model. We employed a 10-year panel with data on container throughput, port terminal area, berth length, and number of available cranes in 63 ports. The model has three innovations with respect to the available literature: (i) we treated ship-to-shore gantry cranes and mobile cranes separately, in order to account for the higher productivity of the former; (ii) we introduced a binary variable for ports using ships¿ cranes, treated as an additional source of port productivity; and (iii) we introduced a binary variable for ports operating as transshipment hubs. Their associated parameters are highly significant in the production function. The results show an improvement in the average technical efficiency of ports in the Latin American and Caribbean region from 36% to 50% between 1999 and 2009; the best performing port in 2009 achieved a technical efficiency of 94%with respect to the frontier. The paper also studies possible determinants of port technical efficiency, such as ownership, corruption, transshipment, income per capita, and location. The results revealed positive and significant associations between technical efficiency and both transshipment activities and lower corruption levels.
