Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of research is to study the life and work of the first Soviet writer Vladimir Yakovlevich Zazubrin. His biography is described in detail and a brief description of his works is given. It is shown that the life of this person was full of bright and dynamic events. Zazubrin managed to be an underground revolutionary, a participant in the Civil War on both sides, a political worker and a Soviet writer. Impressed by the events of the Civil War, Zazubrin published his first novel, “Two Worlds,” which immediately gained popularity among Red Army soldiers, workers and peasants. After this, the writer becomes the editor of the Sibirskie Ogni (Siberian Lights) magazine and heads the Simbirsk Writers Union. However, in his works the writer tried to raise pressing problems of our time and, being a convinced communist, he remained an artist, trying to capture and show the unsightly picture of Soviet reality during the NEP (New Economic Policy) period. Many of his works, such as Shchepka (Sliver) and Blednaia Pravda (Pale Truth) raised the question of the appropriateness of revolutionary terror, the problem of unresolved social problems after the revolution, as well as the place and role of man in a post-revolutionary society. Unfortunately, the realistic picture of the post-revolutionary world by V.Ya. Zazubrin was negatively perceived by many Soviet party leaders, writers and literary critics. This became the reason for constant attacks on the writer’s work. In addition, in 1928, Zazubrin became a victim of group intrigues in the writing community and the beginning of the fight against the opposition, because of which he lost his post as editor of the Sibirskie Ogni (Siberian Lights) magazine and was expelled from the party. In all subsequent years, Vladimir Yakovlevich tried to rehabilitate his name before the party. Thanks to the intercession of M. Gorky, he managed to become a member of the USSR Writers' Union and publish his novel Gory (Mountains) about collectivization. However, despite his efforts, Zazubrin was never able to fit organically into the Soviet system, and then was crushed by it as an alien element.

Abstract (sommario):
The manifestation of the phenotypic dominance degree of the main stem length in F1 under hybridization of different varieties of bread winter wheat was studied during different for hydrothermal conditions 2018–2020. In the hybridization of Bilotserkivska napivkarlykova variety with medium-growing varieties of groups 1 and 2, the most common type of stem length inheritance was negative overdominance – 54.5 % and positive overdominance – 27.3 %. The degree of phenotypic dominance varied from -63.0 to +7.4. When used medium-sized varieties of group I in the crossing with the maternal form, the degree of phenotypic dominance had a signifcant differentiation from -257.0 to +35.0, and the determination of stem length in most combinations was negatively overdominated – 61.4 %. The combinations Shchedra nyva/Dobirna, Shchedra nyva/Vidrada, Myronivska early/Kolchuga, Antonivka/Vidrada were characterized by a stable manifestation of a negative degree of phenotypic dominance (h p > -1). When involved in the hybridization of medium-sized varieties of group 2 in the maternal form, the most common type of stem length inheritance had negative dominance as well. It was found that the degree of phenotypic dominance of stem length in F 1 depended on the selection of parental forms for hybridization and year conditions. Thus, in 2020, under more favorable conditions for the formation of stem length in most hybrids, a negative degree of phenotypic dominance was determined, and the inheritance was negatively dominated. High rates of negative hypothetical and true heterosis were found in the following hybrids: Shchedra nyva/Dobirna, Shchedra nyva/Vidrada, Kolchuga/Chornyava, Kolchuga/ Antonivka, Yednist/Dobirna, Kolchuga/Vidrada in 2018; Chornyava/Antonivka, Shchedra nyva/Dobirna, Shchedra nyva/Vidrada, Chorniava/Shchedra nyva in 2019; Myronivska early/Antonivka, Zolotokolosa/Antonivka, Myronivska early/Kolchuga, Myronivska early/Vdala, Zolotokolosa/ Yednist, Shchedra nyva/Stolychna, Shchedra nyva/Vidrada, Antonivka/Yednist, Antonivka/Vidrada, Kolchuga/Vidrada, Kolchuga/Stolychna in 2020. Key words: bread winter wheat, crossbreeding combinations, hybrids, main stem length, degree of phenotypic dominance, hypothetical and true heterosis.

Abstract (sommario):
The subject of this research is the memoir heritage of Tatiana Lvovna Shchepkina-Kupernik. The novelty is defined by the absence of works dedicated specifically to the theatrical memoirs of Tatiana Lvovna Shchepkina-Kupernik. This article examines her memoiristics as part of the history of Russian theater, which allows the researchers to determine the author's contribution to the Russian theater studies. The goal of this consists in drawing attention of the audience and researchers to the memoiristics of Tatiana Lvovna Shchepkina-Kupernik, as well as in describing the role of her theatrical memoirs within the Russian literary studies and the history of Russian theater. Analysis is conducted on the key peculiarities of the memoir heritage of T. L. Shchepkina-Kupernik: stylistic uniqueness, attention to details of the theatrical culture, mastery of sculptural portraits. The author also reveals fascinating rare facts about the prominent figures of art and theatrical events of the late XIX – early XX centuries. The conclusion is made that the memoirs of T. L. Shchepkina-Kupernik represent a rich source on the history of Russian theatre. The details of theatrical culture, in-depth analysis of acting, portraits of the outstanding figures of Russian and foreign culture – all these facts makes her memoir heritage an invaluable material that contributes to the study of the Russian theatrical art.

Abstract (sommario):
At the core of this article and publication are archived documents, namely, letters of A. Smirnov to T. Shchepkina-Kupernik, their collection kept at the Russian State Archive of Literature and Art (RGALI). Collaboration between the Shakespeare scholar and the translator lasted for over 30 years (1916–1947). This epistolary legacy is rich in different philological subjects, including Smirnov’s and Shchepkina-Kupernik’s joint preparation of Shakespeare’s works to be printed for adult as well as younger audiences (for example, the collected works for children in four volumes, which features the first publication of Shchepkina-Kupernik’s translation of Romeo and Juliet, produced on Smirnov’s request). It is Shchepkina-Kupernik’s work on the tragedy that the author attempts to piece together in the article. The correspondence also prompts a broader question about the translatororiented editions of Shakespeare prepared for print by Smirnov in the late 1930s. The commentary supplied to the correspondence offers a reconstruction of A. Smirnov’s wide network of contacts in the cultural and publishing setting in the grim period of 1930s political repression.

Abstract (sommario):
The article deals with the peculiarities of the Mykhailo Shchepkin`s fi gure reception in linguistic consciousness of Taras Shevchenko. It has been demonstrated that the basis of the literary-and-artistic anthroponymicon of T. Shevchenko`s works, including the anthroponymicon of his “Diary”, are the names of his contemporaries, who played an important role in his life – M. Shchepkin, Y. Lazarevsky, P. Kulish, O. Bodiansky, M. Maximovich, etc. The semantic-and-evaluative paradigms of these proper names are represented through the prism of T. Shevchenko’s individual perception and outlook. They convincingly show his attitude to the mentioned persons in diff erent specifi c everyday, communicative situations. We have emphasized the dominance of positive appraisals of M. Shchepkin’s fi gure, which reveal the reception of him as a unique and sincere person (amazing old man, sincere Mikhail Semenovich, kindest creature), a talented actor (great man, great artist, brilliant actor, best comedian, unique comedian, irresistible Shchepkin, artist-veteran, patriarch-artist), a close friend (great friend, my only friend, my sincere, my unforgettable, nobler friend, kind friend, sincere friend). Topical for such contexts lexemes ‘uniqueness’, ‘ humaneness’, ‘honesty’, ‘talent’ and ‘sociability’ determine the positive evaluation of most contexts in which the name of Mykhailo Shchepkin is mentioned. They form the overall emotional meaning of the concept of the same name. Means of intimization of the image of M. Shchepkin – friend have been noted, in particular due to the combination of the anthroponym with the possessive pronoun mine.

Abstract (sommario):
The article is dedicated to the anniversary of Lev Shcherba, a famous linguist whose contribution to the development of Russian linguistics cannot be overemphasized. The year 2020 marks 140 years since his birth. This article attempts to demonstrate the applied aspects of the scholar’s work. While a lot of works have been written on various theoretical ideas suggested and/or elaborated by L. Shcherba, less attention has been paid to the specific character of his scientific creativity. Practical importance of L. Shcherba’s works for stylistics, phonetics, lexicography and grammar is underpinned. Special focus is made on the publication of a symposia series named “Russian Speech”. This series came about largely owing to L. Shcherba’s efforts. He became its perpetual editor. That was where he published a number of his crucial works. Also, Shcherba’s views on teaching foreign languages in the Soviet Union are analysed. It is noted that L. Shcherba strived to put forward effective recommendations taking into account all the obstacles in learning a foreign language that existed in the USSR. It is hard to overestimate Shcherba’s contribution to Russian linguistics as an organizer, a teacher, and a scientific advisor who managed to unify talented disciples that did their best to keep on elaborating the ideas of I. A. Baudouin de Courtenay whose most outstanding follower L. Shcherba was. His scientific and pedagogical heritage is inseparable from the traditions of Russian linguistics.

Abstract (sommario):
This work presents reflections on childhood multilingualism and child development. We reviewed the works of two Belarusian authors: Lev Semionovitch Vygotsky and Lev Vladimirovitch Shcherba. As a result, we indicate the relevance of the dialogue between psychology and linguistics. Vygotsky wrote the text K voprosu o mnogoiazitchii v detskom vozraste (The Question of Multilingual Children) between 1928 and 1929. Shcherba wrote Metodika: k voprossu o dvuiezitchii (Methodology: On the question of bilingualism) in 1930. Both texts became sources of our bibliographical research. By approaching Vygoysky and Shcherba’s works, we highlight the complexity and breadth of childhood multilingualism.

Abstract (sommario):
Tatyana Lvovna Shchepkina-Kupernik is known as the author of theatrical memoirs and brilliant plays’ translations, but her dramaturgy heritage still lacks the research attention. The article analyzes one of the most striking plays by T.L. Shchepkina-Kupernik “The Happy Woman”. In 1911 it received the Griboyedov award for the best original dramatic play of that theatrical season, though nowadays it is undeservedly forgotten. The article disputes the prevailing idea of the play “The Happy Woman” as a work of exclusively gender themes, focused on the “women’s issue”. The analysis of the play’s poetics (features of the drama conflict, the nature of the dialogues, scenography, the specifics of the author’s remarks, the symbolism of sound images) allows us to conclude that Shchepkina-Kupernik consistently implemented the traditions of Chekhov’s dramaturgy. Certain symbolic overtones are created by the motif of “the lost life”, embodied in the fate of the main character, the emphasized weakness of male characters (focus on a career, superficiality, inability to influence the situation, unavailability). It deepens the content of the dramatic conflict and leads to the tragic outcome, just like in Chekhov’s plays, “not individual people are to blame, but the whole existing composition of life as a whole”. There is a bitter irony in the very title of the play, exposing the self-deception of the representatives of the world and the inability of those in power to maintain their dominant position. It is concluded that in the play “The Happy Woman” Shchepkina-Kupernik managed to identify the most dramatic collisions of the era. Written between two revolutions, the play was a reflection of the situation in the country on the eve of the impending catastrophe.

Abstract (sommario):
The definition of orthoepy as “a branch of linguistics that studies pronunciation norms” tends to determine the understanding of its tasks as exclusively prescriptive, and that of orthoepy as a whole as an applied area, par excellence. Its other component, purely linguistic, is present in the problem of the correlation between the system and the norm, traditionally central to the school of Lev Shcherba. In essence, this problem is a particular case of the Saussurian “language — speech” dichotomy, which is the reason for regarding orthoepy as a purely linguistic discipline and for discerning two points of view on its object, those “from within” and “from without.” The latter implies a conscious attitude towards the choice, from several possibilities, of one unit as a normative or “correct” with the establishment of the systemic status of this unit. This point of view on language, which emerged almost simultaneously with the awareness of it as an inherently human capacity (Plato), is reflected both in the early evidence of “language prestige” (Catullus, Cicero) and in the works of “intuitive linguists,” either relying on a certain norm (Alexandrian grammarians) or creating it (English orthoepists). In turn, the norm is synonymous to speech, which exists at a given synchronic stage; it changes either as a result of the alternative possibilities offered by the system (language dynamics) or due to the transition of the system to another synchronic stage (linguistic change per se), cf. Ludmila Verbitskaya’s formulation in The Linguistic Encyclopedic Dictionary: “The phonological system of a language completely determines the pronunciation norm. The norm can change within the system provided new forms gradually replace the old ones under the influence of extralinguistic factors or as a result of changes that have taken place in the system.” In this context, the primary task of interpreters of early orthoepic evidence (first of all, historians of language) is to identify factors belonging to two fundamentally different spheres. Ignoring this circumstance in the research procedures, characteristic of (chronologically or ideologically) pre–Saussurian (pre–Baudouin de Courtenay) linguistics, leads to a confusion of factors, including systemic and extra–linguistic ones, and, moreover, of the fundamental notions, (diachronic) change and (synchronic) variation, which, among other things, is reflected in the idea of ‘recent changes’ in the system (in fact, in the norm) and in the popular notion of “language in the state of (constant) flux.” On the contrary, the consistent differentiation, in research procedures, of different factors interacting in the functioning of language system, and thus discerning between the two points of view on it, “from within” and “from without,” makes orthoepy an integral part of linguistics as a fundamental science of language, providing theoretical justification for its applied component, the latter’s goals having been formulated, for all times, as a maxime to “speak properly and correctly.” Refs 29.
