Abstract (sommario):

Data mining supports decision making about reasonable end-milling conditions. Our research objective is to excavate new knowledge with mining effect by applying data mining techniques to a tool catalog. We use hierarchical and nonhierarchical clustering data mining with catalog data by applying multiple regression analysis and focusing on the catalog data shape element. We visually grouped end-mills on the basis of tool shape, considering the ratio of tool shape dimensions, by employing the K-means method. We found that factors related to blade length and full length ratio are effective in for making end-milling condition decisions. These factors have not previously been singled out through background knowledge or expert knowledge, but they were noticed as a data mining effect.

Abstract (sommario):

The purpose of research is to increase the ore mass extraction ratio when mining rich iron ores by changing the shape of the stope chamber, as well as to substantiate its stable parameters under the conditions of the rock pressure manifestation. Used in mines existing methodologies for determining the structural elements of mining system are based on calculated equivalent spans of outcropping the stope chambers, which have a rectangular or tent shape. For the first time using the ANSYS software package, it has been determined that the formation of a compensation chamber of quasi-parabolic shape can significantly reduce the stresses concentration around the stope block. Thus, the formation of a stope chamber of a quasi-parabolic shape makes it possible to reduce vertical stresses as compared to horizontal ones without increasing horizontal pressure. When mining the extraction block, it is proposed to form the stope chamber of a quasi-parabolic shape with geometric parameters that directly depend on the parameters of the deposit, the depth of mining, and the direction of main stresses action. Dependences have been determined of the stresses value on the depth of mining and the physical properties of rocks, as well as on the length along the strike of the ore deposit. Thus, depending on the mining depth and length along the strike, rock pressure on the stope chamber of a quasi-parabolic shape decreases under non-uniform loading. The formation of a stope chamber of a quasi-parabolic shape will increase by 1.2 – 1.5 times the volume of pure ore that is recovered from the block.

In order to mater the reasonable layout basis of the terminal mining line position in the repeated mining of close-distance thick coal seams, taking Yan mine as the engineering background, we conducted theoretical analyses, numerical simulations, and field measurements to study the action mechanism of the stress arch. The results show that (1) with repeated mining, the shape of the left and right half arches of the stress arch changes in the order of time and space until it is stable; (2) the shape of the stress arch is highly related to the distribution of abutment pressure in the working face. If the shape is unchanged, the distribution of abutment pressure is unchanged; (3) in the final mining stage of repeated mining, when the shape of the right half arch is stable, the difference stagger distance of the terminal mining line has little effect on the distribution of abutment pressure of the working face where the front arch foot is located; (4) when the internal stagger distance between 3216 working face and terminal mining line of 4216 working face is greater than 22 m or the external stagger distance is greater than 30 m, 3216 working face is located in a relatively safe position. This study clarifies the key factors for the layout of terminal mining lines in close-distance thick coal seams, which can provide a scientific basis for similar projects.

The stage of product modeling design implies a lot of complex tacit knowledge, which is the embodiment of the design concept centered on product modeling design and is also the hot spot and difficulty of modern design theory and method research. Aiming at the evaluation and decision of product modeling design scheme, a decision-making method of approaching ideal solution ranking based on grey relational analysis was proposed, which realized the convergence of tacit knowledge. The empty association rule is an important knowledge content of spatial data mining. A fuzzy genetic algorithm can solve the characteristics of random and nonlinear problems and solve the data mining problems of spatial association rules. The fuzzy genetic algorithm of discrete crossover probability and mutation probability is applied to data mining of spatial association rules in a spatial database, the coding method of the fuzzy genetic algorithm and the construction of fitness function are discussed, and the process of mining spatial association rules is given. The results show that the method of mining s association rules with the fuzzy genetic algorithm is feasible and has higher mining efficiency. This paper discusses the construction method of designing a decision support database based on linear regression and neural network and then proposes a decision method combining TOPSIS and grey relational analysis, which comprehensively considers the position and shape of the scheme data curve.

Abstract (sommario):

<p><strong>Abstract.</strong> This report searches for the Japanese view of beauty and nature through a study of the mapping of the transformation of a mountain’s shape. A normal map primarily intends to express existing shapes, but this report maps the vanished shape of a mountain from the limestone mining of its slopes. This is done to consider how its vanished shape has impacted the Japanese view of beauty and nature. The mountain studied is Mount Bukō located in Chichibu City and Yokozemachi in Saitama Prefecture. Mount Bukō is suitable for limestone mining, and during the Edō Period, limestone was mined on this mountain to obtain material for mortar and fertilizer. In the Meiji Period, cement was used in Japan to construct buildings and surface roads, and limestone (raw material for cement) was produced and consumed in large quantities. During the Taishō Period, corporations started to mine vast quantities of limestone. At Mount Bukō, the shape of the mountain was heavily transformed by limestone mining (Figure 1,2).</p><p>However, during the 1940s, Mount Bukō was mentioned as a candidate site for a national park. In 1957, the entire area &amp;ndash; including the mining site &amp;ndash; was designated the Saitama Prefectural Natural Park. Parks are designated in Japan in imitation of Europe and America, and their major purposes are to preserve beautiful scenery and serve as places for residents’ recreational activities. Thus, by the Meiji Period, national parks such as Nikko National Park (which includes the Tōshōgū Shrine) were already being designated. Considering the above historical background, the movement to designate Mount Bukō as a park can be understood as an effort to preserve its scenery and provide a place for residents’ activities. But limestone mining continues to transform the shape of the mountain as, for example, a total of roughly 6.99 million tons of limestone were mined on Mount Bukō in 2016. By analyzing the facts of this case, this study can portray the Japanese consciousness of the change of the shapes of mountains and clarify the nature of their view of beauty and nature in mountains.</p><p>This paper reports on the preparation of a stereoscopic map based on topographical maps and photos created since the start of the Meiji Period, Chichibu <i>fudasho</i> temple drawings from the Edō Period, and the chronological mapping of the shape of the mountain before and since its designation as a park. Mapping using diverse source materials to represent exposed rock and landslides caused by limestone mining permits a detailed study that would be impossible based on topographical maps lacking contour lines, photographs, or drawings from one direction, primarily from the northern side of the mountain (Figure 3,4). This study shows which parts of the disappearing Mount Bukō are important to people and which parts of the remaining mountain shape they value highly. It also portrays the Japanese view of beauty and nature from a cultural perspective to aesthetically evaluate artificially formed “nature” as seen in temple gardens or bonsai.</p>

Abstract (sommario):

This study aimed to examine gas extraction technology in the goaf of an L-shaped borehole in the mining fissure zone of a short-distance coal seam group. The numerical simulation method was used to analyze the failure law of overlying rock during mining, and a mathematical model was established for gas migration in the mining overburden. Finally, gas extraction tests were performed for the L-shaped borehole in the mining fissure zone. The results showed that as the coal mining project progressed, the damage area of the overlying strata in the goaf became larger, and the plastic damage area of the overlying rock along the strike had a saddle shape, being concave in the middle and convex at both ends. The closer the L-shaped borehole in the mining fissure zone was to the coal seam roof, the greater the amount of air leaking from the working face into the goaf, and the lower the overall gas concentration in the goaf. When the vertical distance of the L-shaped borehole was too high, the ability of the L-shaped borehole to control the gas concentration in the lower goaf was weakened. Moreover, the mining fracture zone was a good space for gas migration and storage. Thus, arranging the L-shaped borehole in this zone can greatly improve the efficiency of borehole gas extraction. According to the overlying rock conditions and mining conditions of Tunlan Mine, the L-shaped borehole was positioned 43 m away from the roof of the coal seam. The extraction rate of the L-shaped borehole reached 9.30 m3∙min−1, and the gas concentration in the corners of the working face was kept below 0.4%, yielding an excellent extraction effect.

“Three straight and two flat” is the inevitable demand when realizing the intelligent mining of a fully mechanized mining face. To address the crucial technical issue of lacking accurate perception of the shape of the scraper conveyor during intelligent coal mining, a three-dimensional curvature sensor involving fiber Bragg grating (FBG) is used as a perceptive tool to conduct curve reconstruction research based on different local motion frames and to reconstruct the shape of the scraper conveyor. Firstly, the formation process of the ‘S’-shaped bending section of the scraper conveyor during the pushing process is determined. Based on the FBG sensing principle, a mathematical model between the variation in the central wavelength and the strain and curvature is established, and the cubic B-spline interpolation method is employed to continuously process the obtained discrete curvature. Secondly, based on differential geometry, a spatial curve reconstruction algorithm based on the Frenet moving frame is derived, and the shape curve prediction interpolation model is built based on a gated recurrent unit (GRU) model, which reduces the impact of the decrease in curve reconstruction accuracy caused by damage to some grating measuring points. Finally, an experimental platform was designed and built, and sensors with curvature radii of 6 m, 7 m, and 8 m were tested. The experimental results showed that the reconstructed curve was essentially consistent with the actual shape, and the absolute error at the end was about 2 mm. The feasibility of this reconstruction algorithm in engineering has been proven, and this is of great significance in achieving shape curve perception and straightness control for scraper conveyors.

This paper build entity modeling of coal minning machine cutting part transmission gear by established 2d model by CAXA and import PRO/E, and by using ABAQUS/Explicit as the simulation platform, assembly and analysis with dynamic meshing contact, get in gear stress of gear tooth distribution, and provide the basis to the gear shape design.

Two additive processing scenarios were considered covering manufacturing and repair applications. One scenario required evaluation of three processes for the addition of shaped blocks to a casing. The other involved infilling a shallow hemispherical indent with one of three polycrystalline alloys (alloy 718, waspaloy™ and RR1000) using different deposition strategies. Processinduced discontinuities were characterised and controlled using a design of experiments approach. As distinct from welding, process variables of overlap, Toolpath, bead shape,sequencing and incremental height were established as influential variables Toolpath in particular can give markedly different textures and grain alignment which would be expected to influence mechanical anisotropy. Fine pool processes seem less prone to cracking and more likely to yield fine microstructures.

Abstract (sommario):

This thesis focused on the development of Ti-Ni-based shape memory alloys using a novel alloy development process based on laser melting technique, suspended droplet alloying (SDA), and on development of a manufacturing route Ti-Ni-based structures using selective laser melting (SLM), specifically for Negative Poisson’s ratio (NPR) auxetic structures. To assess the SDA process, a series of Ti-Ni-based binary, ternary and quaternary SMA have been built to analyse the chemical and microstructural homogeneity of the builds produced by the SDA process. The shape memory performance in terms of the transformation temperature, thermal stability and thermo-mechanical stability was also investigated and compared with commercial SMA and literatures. It proved that the SDA built sample was comparable to the bulk SMA built by other alloy development processes. To assess the processability of Ti-Ni-based alloys, SLM process parameters were optimised for Ti-Ni SMA and the SMA NPR structure was built for mechanical testing. It was found that the SLM process parameters can severely alter the microstructure and shape memory properties due to different cooling rate and Ni vaporisation. Finally, TiNiCuNb and TiNiHfCuNb alloys were developed using SDA to improve the shape memory properties by altering the precipitates. The analysis of these alloys indicated that the addition of Cu, Hf and Nb altered the precipitate types and morphology altogether, resulting in a unique shape memory behaviour during thermal cycling.

Microstructural analysis and mechanical property assessment have been carried out on hot isostatically pressed (HIPped) and heat treated samples of RR 1000 powder to assess Net Shape HIPping as a process-route for aero engine components. HIPping led to (Hf,Zr)-rich oxides and carbides on prior particle boundaries (PPBs) which could be coarsened, but not eliminated by changing the HIP procedure. HIPping above the γ′ solvus resulted in coarser grains with serrated boundaries and in the formation of irregular-shaped secondary γ′ and fan-type γ-γ′ structures. Factors which influence the growth and morphology of γ′ particles are considered and it is shown that particle impingement dominates in the formation of irregular γ′ during continuous cooling from supersolvus. Solution treatment near the HIPping temperature led to thermally induced pores (TIP) but lower temperatures avoided TIP and changed the γ′ size, distribution and morphology giving a large volume fraction of finer cuboidal secondary γ′ and medium-sized spherical tertiary γ′.

The overwhelming voice in the SHRM literature over the past two decades has advocated ‘soft’ human or employee relations over ‘harder’ , more prescriptive management science; with much of the literature focusing on the application of high-commitment management (HCM), or high involvement work systems (HIWS), as a way of achieving competitive advantage. Although there has been substantial effort expended to establish a link between such practices and improved firm outcomes, the research has rarely focused on the role of the Human Resource practitioner from the incumbent’s perspective, in implementing and supporting these outcomes. This study uses an approach combining semi-structured interviews, a face to face structured questionnaire based on Ulrich’s (1993) HR role framework, combined with a Delphi study to examine the role of the Human Resource professional within the Australian metals mining industry. Results from the study indicate that the role of the HR professional within the Australian metals mining industry has not developed as consistent with the dominant discourse on Strategic Human Resource Management in the HRM and SHRM literature. Rather, the evidence suggests that the current HR practitioner is more focussed on operational activities and in performing the ‘employee champion’ role, instead of the ‘strategic’ role. In the case of the Australian Metals Mining Industry (AMMI) the study has identified that contextual constraints have contributed significantly to the operational focus of the HR role, and that these should not be ignored when examining the implementation of SHRM practices. The results of this study challenge the application of a SHRM ‘best practice’ approach in achieving competitive advantage, and point to a need for re-examining harder, operationally focused but contextually sensitive approach to HRM practices

Abstract (sommario):

The thesis presents a system for content based image retrieval and mining. The research presents a design of a scalable solution for efficient retrieval of images from large image databases using image features such as color, shape and texture. A framework for automatic labeling of images and clustering of meta data in database based on the dominant shapes, textures and colors in the image is proposed. The thesis also presents a new image tagging methodology to annotate the dominant image features to the image as meta data. The users of this system can input a query image and select similar image retrieval criteria by selecting a feature type from amongst color, texture or shape. The system retrieves images from the database that match the specified pattern and displays them by relevance. The user can enter a set of keywords or a combination of keywords that form the input text query. Images in the database that match the input text query are fetched and displayed. This ensures content based similar image search even for text based search. An efficient clustering algorithm is shown to improve the image retrieval by an order of magnitude.

This thesis is aimed at the identification of causes for the instability of Ti-49.8Ni and Ti-40.8Ni-9Cu (at.%)shape memory alloys during thermomechanical cycling. To assess the macroscopical and microstructural behaviour several techniques were employed. Thermo-mechanical tests (TMT) revealed that TiNi did not stabilise under the tested conditions. In contrast, TiNiCu showed a more stable behaviour. Whereas the maximum testing temperatures were found to be detrimental for the strain output in TiNi, none such influence could be found in TiNiCu. In TiNiCu increasing stresses seems to prevent the material stabilisation.During in-situ TMTs under high energy X-ray radiation in a synchrotron, microstructural factors influencing the stability of the material were assessed. No hint on a negative influence of remnant or intermediate phases and texture or variant selection was found. Instead increasingly negative strains build up in austenite possibly causing instabilities. In TiNiCu differences in the processing where found to cause changes in the phase transformation temperatures. These could be linked with differences in the chemical composition and in the level of inhomogeneity of precipitates.

NiTi-based shape memory alloys (SMAs) have been developed as high power density micro-actuators for small scale and/or light weight actuation systems; this provides opportunities for actuators to be installed in regions where conventional actuators are unattractive due to their size, weight or power consumption. SMA based actuators could be applied across a greater range of applications if the SMA that provides the force could be joined to other light weight engineering materials, such as Ti-6Al-4V. The scope of this work is to describe the reasons why conventional fusion based welding and brazing procedures fail to provide strong joints between Ti-6Al-4V and NiTi-based SMAs, then detail a novel brazing method that can join these materials. This novel joining method involves using a localised heating method to braze the parent metals together. This localised brazing method prevents the shape memory properties from being compromised. The strength of the joints produced in this work have been related to their microstructure, which in turn have been related to the processing steps used to produce the joint. A study of the processing parameters was conducted to investigate the potential of this method as a large scale production joining method.

Particle shape of soil aggregates is known to influence several engineering properties; such as the internal friction angle, the permeability, etc. Even if this is known, there has been only minor progress in explaining the processes behind its performance and has only partly implemented in practical geotechnical analysis. Previously shape classification of aggregates has mainly been performed by ocular inspection and e.g. by sequential sieving. In geotechnical analysis has been a lack of an objective and rational methodology to classify shape properties by quantitative measures. The image analysis, as quantitative methodology, is tested and it is investigated how the results are affected by resolution, magnification level and type of shape describing quantity. Tailings as a part of granular materials need to be stored safely in facilities and for a long time perspective a good knowledge of current and future materials properties is needed. Tailings are site specific and not well investigated compare to natural geological materials. There also is a need of prognosis tools for long term behavior. Based on laboratory test tailings from Aitik mine has been investigated through triaxial test and particle shape (using two dimensions image analysis).The overview has shown that there is no agreement on the usage of the descriptors and is not clear which descriptor is the best. The resolution in the processed image needs to be considered since it influences descriptors such as e.g. the perimeter. Recent development in image analysis processing has opened up for classification of particles by shape. The interpreted results show that image analysis is a promising methodology for particle shape classification. Results are affected by the image acquisition procedure, the image processing, and the choice of quantity, there is a need to establish a methodology to ensure the objectivity in the particle shape classification. Natural resources are an important source for development, and Latin America is one of the regions with the highest endowment. This calls for a reconsideration of resource-based development. This document analyzes opportunities to design and implement integrated policies through a revised taxonomy of mining-related policies, applying it to Australia, South Africa, and Chile. The mining sector has been a fertile field, characterized by high technology niches, growth, and innovation. The Covid-19 pandemic has hit small- scale farmers, particularly women, very hard in Latin America. RIMISP – Latin American Center for Rural Development – has been conducting participatory research to mitigate the impact of Covid-19 on smallholder farmers in the department of Huila, in Colombia. The team has been working closely with the Secretariat of Agriculture and Mining of the Government of Huila to set up a Rural Dialogue Group to promote discussion on the project’s findings with local stakeholders. These discussions are helping to shape the local government’s agenda around these issues. The research team is also strengthening the capacity of small producer organisations to better access public programmes.

This study focuses on analyzing sentiments expressed on the Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS) Facebook page, providing a window into public opinion on various development issues and governmental policies. By conducting opinion mining and sentiment analysis on comments from the top three viral Facebook posts of PIDS, which discuss education, the middle class, and social protection policies, the study reveals a range of public perspectives and highlights the challenges faced by the populace. Additionally, an online survey targeting PIDS' social media followers was conducted to understand their demographics and preferences in accessing development research. The findings demonstrate the effectiveness of social media analytics in capturing genuine public opinion, which can be instrumental in refining policies based on evidence. The study recommends enhancing analytics capabilities, systematically incorporating these insights while safeguarding data privacy, and continuously updating strategies to reflect changing public sentiments. This policy research study underscores the value of social media data in making governance more responsive and inclusive.

There is a widespread perception that taxing in sub-Saharan Africa has been and remains fraught with problems or government failure. This is not generally true. For more than a century, colonial administrations and independent states have steadily developed the capacity to routinely collect more substantial revenues than one might expect in a low-income region. The two main historical dimensions of this collection capacity were (a) powerful, centralized bureaucracies focused on achieving revenue collection targets and (b) large, taxable international trade sectors. In recent decades, those centralized bureaucracies have to some extent been reformed such that in structure and procedure they resemble more closely tax administrations in OECD countries. More strikingly, nearly all states have adopted VAT and found it to be a very powerful revenue collection instrument. However, the tax share of GDP has been broadly constant for several decades, and it will be hard to increase it. It is difficult for African governments to effectively tax transnational corporations, especially in the mining and energy sectors, which are of growing importance. Tax administrations continue to approach richer Africans with a light touch, and to exaggerate the potential for taxing small-scale (‘informal’) enterprises. The revenue operations of sub-national governments are often opaque. Ordinary people often pay large sums in ‘informal taxes’ that are generally regressive in impact. And the standard direction of travel in the reform of tax policy and administration is not appropriate to those large areas, especially in the Sahel, that are afflicted by internal and cross-border armed conflicts.

On 28 May 2024, the Social Science in Humanitarian Action Platform (SSHAP) organised a roundtable discussion on the mpox (formerly known as monkeypox) outbreak which has been spreading in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) since early 2023.1 The objective was to appraise the current situation, with a particular focus on social science insights for informing context-sensitive risk communication and community engagement (RCCE) and wider operational responses. The roundtable was structured into two sessions: 1) an overview of the situation in DRC, including the current knowledge of epidemiology and 2) contextual considerations for response. This was followed by an hour-long panel discussion on operational considerations for response. Each session was initiated by a series of catalyst presentations followed by a question-and-answer session (Q&A). Details of the agenda, speakers and discussants can be found below. Despite estimates that less than 10% of suspected cases in DRC are being laboratory screened, the country is currently reporting the highest number of people affected by mpox in sub-Saharan Africa. It is notable that clade 1 of mpox is linked to this outbreak, which results in more severe disease and a higher fatality rate. While early cases of mpox were reported to be in gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM), the disease is now being detected more widely in DRC. The majority of those affected are children (up to 70% by some estimates2), which is a cause for concern. The outbreak is occurring on top of an overall high burden of disease and significant challenges to the health system and humanitarian interventions. The apparently heterogeneous picture of mpox across DRC – affecting different geographies and population groups – is shaped in part by social, economic and political factors. For instance, in South Kivu, accounts indicate that transmission via intimate and sexual contact is significant in mining areas, with an estimated one third of cases of disease reported in female sex workers. This raises questions about transactional sex and related stigma in these areas, as well as the implications of cross-border mobility linked to mining livelihoods for the spread of disease. A history of conflict and militia activity has additional implications for humanitarian intervention and is a factor in uptake and implementation of control strategies such as vaccination. Severe limitations in government health facilities in remote areas and a plural landscape of biomedical and non-biomedical providers are additional factors to consider for patterns of care-seeking and the timely provision of biomedical care. The limited reach of formal healthcare, including surveillance, makes it difficult to estimate the extent of cases and control disease spread through conventional epidemiological strategies. There are likely further challenges in accessing less visible populations such as GBMSM, as research in Nigeria has suggested.3,4 These complex contextual realities raise significant questions for mpox response. The roundtable convened a diverse range of expertise to offer perspectives from existing research and knowledge, with an emphasis on social science evidence. This roundtable report presents a synthesised version of the roundtable discussion with additional context as needed.

New high precision lithogeochemistry and Nd and Hf isotopic data were collected on felsic rocks of the Rambler Rhyolite formation from the Ming volcanogenic massive sulphide (VMS) deposit, Baie Verte Peninsula, Newfoundland. The Rambler Rhyolite formation consists of intermediate to felsic volcanic and volcaniclastic rocks with U-shaped primitive mantle normalized trace element patterns with negative Nb anomalies, light rare earth element-enrichment (high La/Sm), and distinctively positive Zr and Hf anomalies relative to surrounding middle rare earth elements (high Zr-Hf/Sm). The Rambler Rhyolite samples have epsilon-Ndt = -2.5 to -1.1 and epsilon-Hft = +3.6 to +6.6; depleted mantle model ages are TDM(Nd) = 1.3-1.5 Ga and TDM(Hf) = 0.9-1.1Ga. The decoupling of the Nd and Hf isotopic data is reflected in epsilon-Hft isotopic data that lies above the mantle array in epsilon-Ndt -epsilon-Hft space with positive ?epsilon-Hft values (+2.3 to +6.2). These Hf-Nd isotopic attributes, and high Zr-Hf/Sm and U-shaped trace element patterns, are consistent with these rocks having formed as slab melts, consistent with previous studies. The association of these slab melt rocks with Au-bearing VMS mineralization, and their FI-FII trace element signatures that are similar to rhyolites in Au-rich VMS deposits in other belts (e.g., Abitibi), suggests that assuming that FI-FII felsic rocks are less prospective is invalid and highlights the importance of having an integrated, full understanding of the tectono-magmatic history of a given belt before assigning whether or not it is prospective for VMS mineralization.

Reaching the goals of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework requires commitment at all political levels and in all sectors. The State of Saxony also has to contribute its share. Saxony has a great potential, but also faces particular challenges. Almost half of the land area is used for agriculture, mainly for arable farming. However, only around eight percent of the land is farmed ecologically4. Intensification and monotonization of agriculture, as well as the use of pesticides and fertilizers, significantly contribute to the loss of biodiversity. Agriculture plays a crucial role as a habitat for biodiversity5. It is indispensable to promote biodiversity-friendly use, increase the proportion of land under organic farming, and establish corresponding methods in conventional agriculture. As a producer of fossil fuels, especially by the Lusatian and Central German lignite mining regions, Saxony is also strongly affected by the energy transition. The expansion of renewable energies needs to be nature-compatible and in harmony with the protection of biodiversity. Approaches to multifunctional landuse may provide support in this regard. Prof. Dr. Edeltraud Günther, Director of UNU-FLORES, emphasizes the need to consider biodiversity in the resource nexus. Saxony has good prerequisites to meet these challenges. With its Saxony Biodiversity 2030 Program, it has a revised biodiversity strategy to meet the global targets. In addition, Saxony is home to major research institutions that intensively focus on biodiversity. Research, education, and science communication play a central role in this context. Prof. Tshilidzi Marwala, Rector of UNU and Under-Secretary- General of the UN, emphasized the key role of education in his opening address of the DNCi 2023: 'Education is the key to unlock our potential. It empowers us to become stewards of our environment by providing us with a deep appreciation for biodiversity and inspiring sustainable practices in every aspect of our lives. By integrating transformative education at the international, national, and local levels, we can create profound change in attitudes, knowledge, and behaviors.' The DNCi 2023 participants had a hands-on experience of the importance of education and science communication on biodiversity thanks to a guided tour of the Botanical Garden. Many thanks to Prof. Dr. Christoph Neinhuis, Director of the Botanical Garden, and Dr. Barbara Dietsch, Scientific Director of the Botanical Garden, for these valuable insights. As part of the DNCi 2023, co-organized by UNU-FLORES, the IOER, and TU Dresden, we succeeded in bringing together different stakeholders from science, government, civil society, and the private sector to create a dynamic platform for exchange and collaboration on the topic of biodiversity.
