Abstract (sommario):
<p>Gaudi was a unique architectural designer at the aspect of architectural design in Art Nouveau. His architectural design has a unique line design, including the external shape curve of Casa Mila being representative. The external shape design of Casa Mila had subverted the external design of traditional architectures. The wave shape of its vertical wall had broken the contemporary traditional aesthetic consciousness of architectures. Thus, the reasons and effects for the curved shape in the external shape design of Casa Mila showing incisively and vividly how subversive and disruptive Casa Mila being are the source of studying its external curve design. During the same period, many architectural designs were also applied to curves in the external shape of the buildings. Therefore, the external shape of curves on Casa Mila is how its architectural design curves standing out are contrasted by curve design applied to other contemporaneous architectures in the period of Art Nouveau. The view of this paper expounds the reason that the curvilinear design of Casa Mila is different from that of other architectures, and the influence of the curvilinear design of Casa Mila in the period of Art Nouveau. This paper starts with the analysis of the architectural curve of Casa Mila. By comparative analysis of curve profile and its curvature in external modeling of "House of the People" and Tassel Hotel, this paper reveals that Gaudi's architectural features have an unique external modeling and conveys that the architectural curve of external shape more abounds in using natural elements of imitation.</p>

Abstract (sommario):
Gamma distribution function can have variety of shapes including single peaked positively skewed graph having unit area under the curve, which perfectly matches the graphical presentation of unit hydrograph. The shape and scale parameters can be evaluated from the observed peak runoff rate and time to peak duration by iterative method. Unit hydrograph assumes uniformly distributed storm over the entire area of the watershed hence, a small experimental watershed of 0.12 sq. km at Zonal Agricultural Research Station, Shenda Park, Kolhapur (India) was considered for the. application of model. In this paper a different approach of evaluation of a and /3 have been given with computer program in C language, which will be more effective in computation of shape and scale parameters of Gamma distribution function for modeling the unit hydrograph and then converting to the direct runoff hydrograph. The results of regeneration of direct runoff hydrograph shows very good fit of the observed and computed peak flow and volume under direct runoff hydrograph. The average values of shape and scale parameters also gave better fit of direct runoff hydrograph.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractAccurate and temporally consistent modeling of human bodies is essential for a wide range of applications, including character animation, understanding human social behavior, and AR/VR interfaces. Capturing human motion accurately from a monocular image sequence remains challenging; modeling quality is strongly influenced by temporal consistency of the captured body motion. Our work presents an elegant solution to integrating temporal constraints during fitting. This increases both temporal consistency and robustness during optimization. In detail, we derive parameters of a sequence of body models, representing shape and motion of a person. We optimize these parameters over the complete image sequence, fitting a single consistent body shape while imposing temporal consistency on the body motion, assuming body joint trajectories to be linear over short time. Our approach enables the derivation of realistic 3D body models from image sequences, including jaw pose, facial expression, and articulated hands. Our experiments show that our approach accurately estimates body shape and motion, even for challenging movements and poses. Further, we apply it to the particular application of sign language analysis, where accurate and temporally consistent motion modelling is essential, and show that the approach is well-suited to this kind of application.

Abstract (sommario):
The influence of particle shape, orientation, and volume fractions, as well as loading conditions, on the mechanical behavior of Ta particles reinforced with bulk metallic glass matrix composite is investigated in this work. A Matlab program is developed to output the MSC.Patran Command Language (PCL) in order to generate automatically two-dimensional (2D) micromechanical finite element (FE) models, in which particle shapes, locations, orientations, and dimensions are determined through a few random number generators. With the help of the user-defined material subroutine (UMAT) in ABAQUS, an implicit numerical method based on the free volume model has been implemented to describe the mechanical response of bulk metallic glass. A series of computational experiments are performed to study the influence of particle shapes, orientations, volume fractions, and loading conditions of the representative volume cell (RVC) on its composite mechanical properties.

Abstract (sommario):
Introduction. The article deals with phraseological means of modeling gender stereotypes that reflect certain femininity- and masculinity-related peculiarities observed in the Turkic languages. Gender stereotypes are a key category of contemporary gender linguistics. The typological study of gender stereotype modeling phraseological tools across a number of Turkic languages makes it possible to outline some linguistic and cultural features inherent to the phraseological representation of femininity and masculinity in Kazakh, Tatar, Bashkir, Uzbek, and Kyrgyz. Goals. The work seeks to describe linguistic and cultural features of phraseological gender stereotype modeling in the Turkic languages. Materials. The paper focuses on phraseological units contained in various dictionaries of the examined Turkic languages, in particular, phraseological, explanatory and bilingual ones. Results. The study yields a number of key theses as follows: 1) phraseological units serve as linguistic and cultural means of modeling gender stereotypes in the Turkic languages; 2) linguoculturological features of femininity and masculinity are represented in the investigated Turkic languages by various models of phraseological units containing characteristic components of cultural codes; 3) certain Turkic languages have a number of typological similarities and differences in the formation and representation of gender stereotypes, irrespective of actual genealogical connections between corresponding languages; 4) the study of phraseological gender stereotype modeling shall contribute to further development of gender studies and provide deeper insights into the phenomenon of gender in the Turkic worldview. Conclusions. The analysis of phraseological material shows the Turkic languages are distinguished by various ways of gender stereotype modeling, reveals some linguoculturological features of representing femininity and masculinity in genetically related languages characterized by certain similarities and differences in the formation of such stereotypes, contributes to the identification of priority components of linguoculturological codes that shape the peculiarities of gender stereotypes in Turkic languages. A significant part of phraseological units express gender stereotypes through the following components of cultural codes — astronomical, zoomorphic, somatic, vestimentary, gastronomic, color and physical ones — that are characteristic of each language and gender separately.

Although the research literature supports the notion of language growth trajectories, primarily in monolingual English children, the shape and direction of English-language learners' (ELLs) language growth trajectories are largely unknown. The present study examined the shape of ELLs' language growth trajectories by estimating the initial status and the growth rates of specific oral language skills (mean length of utterance in words (MLUw), number of different words (NDW), and words per minute (WPM)) in each language during the first 3 years of formal schooling. This study was framed from the perspective of language as a dynamic system, composed of linguistic subsystems that change over time. This study utilized secondary data from a larger project, the Bilingual Language Literacy Project (BLLP), which collected narrative retell language samples produced in Spanish and English from ELL children. The final longitudinal dataset used in this study consisted of 12,248 oral narrative language samples (6,516 Spanish; 5,732 English) that were produced by 1,723 ELLs. This study examined the effect of three predictors on language growth: academic semester (metric of time), gender, and schooling. Growth curve model (GCM) testing was used to profile the longitudinal growth of the ELLs' oral language skills in Spanish and English over time. This study had a number of important findings regarding change over time, intra- and inter-individual variability, and the impact of initial status on growth. With regard to change over time: MLUw, NDW, and WPM demonstrated growth over time in Spanish and English; the shapes of Spanish (curvilinear, non-monotonic, and continuous) and English growth (linear, non-monotonic, and discontinuous) were similar within-language; language growth in Spanish was predicted by academic semester and gender; and language growth in English was predicted by academic semester, gender, and schooling. With regard to intra- and inter-individual variability: significant intra-individual differences in the growth of all the oral language measures, across each wave of measurement, were found for both languages; significant intra-individual differences in the initial status of participants for all the oral language measures were found for both languages; significant inter-individual differences in the growth rates were found for WPM-Spanish; and significant inter-individual differences in the growth rates were found for all the oral language measures in English. With regard to the impact of initial status on growth: the growth of MLUw-Spanish was systematically related to initial status (lower performers at initial status may not catch up to higher performers); the growth of NDW- and WPM-Spanish were unrelated to its initial status (lower performers at initial status may, or may not catch up to higher performers); and the growth of MLUw-, NDW-, and WPM-English was systematically related to initial status (lower performers at initial status may catch up to higher performers). With regard to the co-development of interconnected subsystems, qualitative observations (non-empirically tested) based on visual inspection and GCM estimates provided initial insight into the possible co-development occurring within- and across-languages. The present study broke new ground by specifying the shape of growth for MLUw, NDW, and WPM in the Spanish and English of ELLs during their first 3 years of formal schooling. The study had a number of methodological limitations that will guide and motivate future work on the language growth of ELLs.

Abstract (sommario):
The term flavoprotein monooxygenases (FPMO) covers two different types of flavoenzymes: single and two component oxygenases. Two component FPMOs consist of a reductase and an oxygenating enzyme. The functional independence of the oxygenase part of 2,5-diketocamphane 1,2-monooxygenase I (2,5 DKCMO), an FMN dependent type II Baeyer-Villiger monooxygenase, from the reductase counterpart, as well as the mechanism of flavin transfer by free diffusion, was investigated in a reductase-free reaction, using synthetic nicotinamide biomimetics (NCBs) for the reduction of FMN. The balance of flavin reduction and enzymatic (re)oxidation was identified as the bottleneck of the system. Aiming for potentially cost efficient hydride donors for enzymatic redox reactions, nicotinamide coenzyme and nicotinamide biomimetic independent flavin reduction strategies were investigated. The capability of the pH and oxygen robust iridium III complex [Cp*Ir(bpy-OMe)H]+ (Ir* (H+)) to transfer hydrides for flavin reduction for the enzymatic reaction of respectively FMNH2 and FADH2 dependent monooxygenases, 2,5 DKCMO and styrene monooxygenase from Sphingopyxis fribergensis Kp.5.2 (SfStyA) was exploited. The Ir* (H+)/SfStyA approach outperformed the state of the art system by six-fold in terms of turn over number of the metal catalyst. Nevertheless, the robustness of the system remains challenging, and improvements are required to establish the approach as an efficient and versatile platform technology for flavoenzymes

Abstract (sommario):
The topic of the thesis is analysis of the topological structure of scalar fields andshapes represented through Morse and cell complexes, respectively. This isachieved by defining simplification and refinement operators on thesecomplexes. It is shown that the defined operators form a basis for the set ofoperators that modify Morse and cell complexes. Based on the definedoperators, a multi-resolution model for Morse and cell complexes is constructed, which contains a large number of representations at uniform and variableresolution.

Abstract (sommario):
In terms of technology, BIM is also part of the worldwide change Industry 4.0, which in essence is the trend toward automation and data exchange in manufacturing technologies and processes. Generative design is an iterative process that involves a program that will generate a certain number of outputs that meet certain constraints, so that a designer is able to fine tune the feasible project by changing minimal and maximal values of an interval in which a variable of the program meets the set of constraints, in order to reduce or augment the number of outputs to choose from. The initial idea of this thesis work was to manipulate few of the most basic geometric elements in order to get a complex parametric shape inspired from the honeycomb as the natures perfectly generated the element. This preliminary idea, together with the ambition to use this transformation for a façade system in a structural building led us to a series of decisions to try and connect two “worlds”, in the sense that we have a CAD environment that lets us create the geometry and a BIM environment where everything is represented by a specific level of information. This geometry is given a specific set of rules that drive and manipulate each of the elements it contains in a certain fashion. This methodology, as well as the communication and the interaction between the software adopted and their programming environments, is what makes the generative design possible. This result from the Grasshopper algorithm is then being created in the CAD environment in Rhinoceros3D, which then can be opened through Rhino.Inside.Revit and give us a direct real-time preview in the BIM environment in Revit. Through a long series of testing and experimenting with the geometry, we get to a point where we have a functional algorithm that creates and manipulates the geometry, in order to foster many design opportunities for structural and architectural designers.

Abstract (sommario):
The Maritime Silk Road foregrounds the numerous networks that have been woven across oceanic geographies, tying world regions together often far more extensively than land-based routes. On the strength of the new data which has emerged in the last two decades in the form of archaeological findings, as well as new techniques such as GIS modeling, the authors collectively demonstrate the existence of a very early global maritime trade. From architecture to cuisine, and language to clothing, evidence points to early connections both within Asia and between Asia and other continents—well before European explorations of the Global South. The human stories presented here offer insights into both the extent and limits of this global exchange, showing how goods and people traveled vast distances, how they were embedded in regional networks, and how local cultures were shaped as a result.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractWe present a major new version of Scenic, a probabilistic programming language for writing formal models of the environments of cyber-physical systems. Scenic has been successfully used for the design and analysis of CPS in a variety of domains, but earlier versions are limited to environments that are essentially two-dimensional. In this paper, we extend Scenic with native support for 3D geometry, introducing new syntax that provides expressive ways to describe 3D configurations while preserving the simplicity and readability of the language. We replace Scenic’s simplistic representation of objects as boxes with precise modeling of complex shapes, including a ray tracing-based visibility system that accounts for object occlusion. We also extend the language to support arbitrary temporal requirements expressed in LTL, and build an extensible Scenic parser generated from a formal grammar of the language. Finally, we illustrate the new application domains these features enable with case studies that would have been impossible to accurately model in Scenic 2.

Abstract (sommario):
The method of Probabilistic Nodes Combination (PNC) enables interpolation and modeling of two-dimensional curves using nodes combinations and different coefficients γ: polynomial, sinusoidal, cosinusoidal, tangent, cotangent, logarithmic, exponential, arc sin, arc cos, arc tan, arc cot or power function, also inverse functions. This probabilistic view is novel approach a problem of modeling and interpolation. Computer vision and pattern recognition are interested in appropriate methods of shape representation and curve modeling. PNC method represents the possibilities of shape reconstruction and curve interpolation via the choice of nodes combination and probability distribution function for interpolated points. It seems to be quite new look at the problem of contour representation and curve modeling in artificial intelligence and computer vision. Function for γ calculations is chosen individually at each curve modeling and it is treated as probability distribution function: γ depends on initial requirements and curve specifications.

Abstract (sommario):
Interpolation methods and curve fitting represent so huge problem that each individual interpolation is exceptional and requires specific solutions. Presented method is such a new possibility for curve fitting and interpolation when specific data (for example handwritten symbol or character) starts up with no rules for polynomial interpolation. The method of Probabilistic Nodes Combination (PNC) enables interpolation and modeling of two-dimensional curves using nodes combinations and different coefficients γ. Abstract (sommario):
Organizations make extensive use of information systems to support planning, decision making, controlling and to leverage competitive advantage. Organizations are also complex entities that integrate contrasting concepts such as strategy, people, processes, technology and information. These concepts must be aligned towards the same purpose to ensure that the organization is able to evolve while maximizing the usage of its resources. However, misalignment issues often occur despite large investments on management, organizational and technological infrastructures. Misalignment also hinders change since it makes difficult understanding the organization and seamlessly communicating its concepts. This chapter describes the key concepts for modeling an organization’s enterprise architecture using the Unified Modeling Language. Enterprise architecture consists on defining and understanding the different elements that shape the organization and how these elements are inter-related with the purpose of understanding and facilitating organizational evolution and change. To achieve this goal, the chapter proposes an enterprise architecture model that separates core organizational concerns as different architectural views, allowing both the modeler and the model user to focus in isolation on Organizational, Business, Information, Application and Technological aspects.

Abstract (sommario):
Decision-making based on so-called medical guidelines supported by semantic AI solutions is an essential and significant task for medical personnel in both a pre-clinical setting and an inner-clinical environment. Semantic representations of medical guidelines and Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) using Semantic Web technologies, i.e., Resource Description Framework (RDF), rules (RuleML and Prova), and Shape Constraint Language (SHACL), provide a semantic knowledge base for the decision-making process and ease technical implementation and automation tasks. Current medical decision support systems lack Semantic Web integration using FHIR-RDF representations as a data source. In this paper, we implement a particular medical guideline using two different approaches: Prova [8] and SHACL [13]. We generate a series of raw FHIR-data for a selected guideline, the ABCDE approach, and compare the implemented two programs’ (Prova and SHACL) results. Both approaches deliver the same results in terms of content. Both may be used within a distributed medical environment depending on the need of organizations.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Traditionally design geometries are represented using orthographic views which require a human being to interpret them and recognize geometric features to evaluate the design. Solid modeling systems have made the task somewhat easier, but they often require tedious and complex operations using simple geometric primitives to create a model assembly. This has led to investigation of modeling systems which allow the creation of assemblies the way engineers conceive them — as features. To be able to efficiently describe models in terms of features, a rich set of feature descriptors is necessary. An exhaustive study of English words describing form, shape, feature, shape altering transformations and surface conditions was done to establish a wide vocabulary for feature based description. Classification based on topology and form was done and constraint relations were implemented to differentiate between features. A feature is created from a topological group and a constraint relation. Points are then computed which will be interpolated by uniform rational B-Splines patches. Control points needed to compute the patches are computed from the interpolation points by an inverse relation. A designer-oriented modeling language, based on simple English syntax, was devised to specify procedures to be executed by the modeler in order to create features using minimal user input.

Abstract (sommario):
Our recent work has described a framework for matching solid of mechanical artifacts models based on scale-space feature decomposition. In this work we adopt a method of comparing solid models based on Multiresolutional Reeb Graphs (MRG) similarity computations. This method was originally proposed by Hilaga et al. in [1]. Reeb Graph technique applies MRG structure to comparisons of approximate models found in the graphics community, such as polygonal meshes, faceted representation and Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML) models. First, we provide a brief review of shape matching using Multiresolutional Reeb Graphs and present an approach to matching solid models. Second, we show the performance of the Reeb Graph technique when handling primitive CAD models, such as cubes and spheres; then we perform experiments with more complex models, such as LEGO models and mechanical parts, and we discuss Reeb Graph technique’s performance on complex CAD models. Third, we emphasize several problems with the existing technique. Finally, we conclude with discussion of future work.

Abstract (sommario):
In preceding research, the concept of the Hand Motion Language (HML) was developed as a novel and intuitive interface for Computer Aided Conceptual Design (CACD) systems. Also, a pilot implementation of the HML interpreter was developed and tested. Current research focuses on the applicability of HML in real-life situations. Firstly, this paper reports on the connection of the HML to the Vague Discrete Interval Modeler (VDIM) as an input interface. Together with the HML interpreter, it serves as a testing environment. Secondly, the paper concentrates on the design and evaluation of an experiment which was done to study the quality of shape definition by hand motions. Three quality measures were established: (i) fidelity of the generated surfaces, (ii) accuracy of the surface manipulation functions, and (iii) difficulty of modeling. Fidelity is the degree to which the representation of a shape is similar to an ideal shape. Accuracy is defined as the degree of conformity of an indicated value, such as width or angle, to an ideal value. With regards to complexity, it is interesting for us how the number of geometric HML words relates to the number of manipulative HML words that has to be issued to model a given shape. A pilot study was designed and performed to gain insight into the problems when generating surfaces by hand motions. The task given to the users was completed within a few steps; however, the quality of the surfaces has to be improved.

Abstract (sommario):
Our research is motivated by the need for developing a rigorous Decision-Based Design framework and the need for developing an approach to demand modeling that is critical for assessing the profit a product can bring. Even though demand modeling techniques exist in market research, little work exists on product demand modeling that addresses the specific needs of engineering design in particular that facilitates engineering decision-making. Building upon our earlier work on using the discrete choice analysis approach to demand modeling, in this work, we provide detailed guidelines for implementing the discrete choice demand modeling approach in product design. The modeling of a hierarchy of product attributes is introduced to cascade customer desires to specific key customer attributes that can be represented using engineering language. To improve the predictive capability of demand models, we propose to use the Kano method for providing the econometric justification when selecting the shape of the customer utility function. A real (passenger) vehicle engine case study, developed in collaboration with the market research firm J.D. Power & Associates and Ford Motor Company, demonstrates the proposed approaches. The example focuses on demand analysis and does not reach beyond the key customer attribute level. The obtained demand model is shown to be satisfactory through cross validation.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper makes a case for the greater integration of computational logic and principles in core undergraduate architectural design courses as visual thinking pedagogy. Math and computation present abstract problems that may seem at odds with the real-world design concepts with which students are familiar. Because architecture students are typically strong visual thinkers, abstract mathematical language can be difficult to learn, but these concepts can be used as a pedagogical interface to support visual problem-solving in the design process. Building on the work of Christopher Alexander in Notes on the Synthesis of Form and A Pattern Language, the idea of “pattern languages” can be used to develop a curriculum that relies on math and computation to connect the visual and social systems at work in the design process. Design curricula can integrate computational thinking based on vector math, geometry, calculus, matrices, set theory, visual programming, and scripting to build students’ computational literacy through visual problem-solving. George Stiny’s “shape grammars” offer an intuitive analog method for introducing students to computational thinking through elements and rules in preparation for designing with digital tools. The further we distance ourselves from the fundamental operations of mathematics and computation, the more we risk becoming obsolete in the process. Computer programs can automate modeling, analyzing, programming, reviewing, and even designing buildings. For now, that places the architect in a narrow domain of design and visual aesthetics, which will quickly be subsumed by machine algorithms deployed by software companies. These machine constructions operate at the social/cultural scale, a place suited for the critical position and service of architects. The education of an architect should therefore provide students with critical knowledge and skills that position them to define the parameters of automation and challenge the computer programmers with radical ideas, communicated in a shared language of mathematics that is both visual and abstract.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper offers systematic guidelines for modeling power systems components in the phasor time-domain using the Modelica language and their verification. It aims to share the authors’ experience in power system modeling with Modelica and the approaches used to meet the high expectations of the power industry w.r.t. to the models’ simulation results. While the modeling guidelines are generic, the verification procedure includes the validation against a domain-specific commercial software tool called PSS®E that is the de facto tool used for power system transmission planning and analysis. To formalize the proposed approaches, a schematic description of the processes of model implementation and validation is elicited through flowcharts. Challenging use cases are presented to point out some of the major difficulties that can be faced in the modeling steps because of unclear or missing documentation of the models’ dynamics in the reference tool. Finally, unique features of the Modelica language that allow for power system modeling and verification unavailable in traditional tools are illustrated.

Abstract (sommario):
The problem of content management of multimedia data types (e.g., image, video, graphics) is becoming increasingly important with the development of advanced multimedia applications. Traditional database management systems are inadequate for the handling of such data types. They require new techniques for query formulation, retrieval, evaluation, and navigation. In this paper we develop a knowledge-based framework for modeling and retrieving image data by content. To represent the various aspects of an image object's characteristics, we propose a model which consists of three layers: (1) Feature and Content Layer, intended to contain image visual features such as contours, shapes, etc.; (2) Object Layer, which provides the (conceptual) content dimension of images; and (3) Schema Layer, which contains the structured abstractions of images, i.e., a general schema about the classes of objects represented in the object layer. We propose two abstract languages on the basis of description logics: one for describing knowledge of the object and schema layers, and the other, more expressive, for making queries. Queries can refer to the form dimension (i.e., information of the Feature and Content Layer) or to the content dimension (i.e., information of the Object Layer). These languages employ a variable free notation, and they are well suited for the design, verification and complexity analysis of algorithms. As the amount of information contained in the previous layers may be huge and operations performed at the Feature and Content Layer are time-consuming, resorting to the use of materialized views to process and optimize queries may be extremely useful. For that, we propose a formal framework for testing containment of a query in a view expressed in our query language. The algorithm we propose is sound and complete and relatively efficient.
