Abstract (sommario):
At 84-pages, Reimagining Malcolm X: Street Thinker Versus Homo Academicusby Seyed Javad Miri is more of a booklet than a book. In fact, like mostof the 40 books on sociology and religion published by this scholar, many ofwhich are self-published or released by subsidy publishers, it falls into thatawkward category between an essay that is too long and a book that is tooshort. Considering the fact that most university and independent academicpresses place profit and marketability before contribution to scholarship inthe field, the fact that ambitious and prolific academics seek to be proactiveand find alternate modes of sharing their scholarship should be commended.Consequently, scholars working in the field of sociology and religion shouldbe grateful to both Miri and the University Press of America for making thiswork on Malcolm X available to readers and researchers.Reimagining Malcolm X examines the significance of el-Hajj Malik el-Shabazz as a social theorist by analyzing his views on race, academia, philosophy, and politics. The work is divided into four chapters: “Novel Strategiesof Interpretation,” “Undisciplinary Fields of Knowledge,” “Violence, Religion, and Extremism,” and “The Epic of America.”In chapter 1, Miri points out that “Malcolm X has not been appropriatedwithin the body of academic social sciences as he should have been” (p. 9).This is both obvious and intentional. It is heartening, however, to see thatinterest in Malcolm’s thoughts has extended to certain segments of Iranianacademia. As the author reveals, however, some Iranian scholars are reticentto see the value of Malcolmian theories and concepts (p. xi). Despite all ofits revolutionary rhetoric, the Islamic Republic of Iran has shown little interestin el-Hajj Malik el-Shabazz. On the contrary, it has preferred to invitehis nemesis Louis Farrakhan, a man who admits that he created the conditionsthat lead to Malcolm’s assassination, to preach at the seminary in Qum.Considering that the Iranian regime considers itself the bastion of Shi‘iteorthodoxy and cracks down on both political critics and practitioners oftaṣawwuf (‘irfān or Sufism), it is ironic that its leaders have promoted a manwho believes that W. D. Fard was the incarnation of Allah and that ElijahMuhammad, as opposed to Muhammad ibn ‘Abd Allah, was Allah’s final ...

Abstract (sommario):
This paper deals with the symbolism of Malcolm’s nicknames and names in The Autobiography of Malcolm X (Malcolm X & Haley, 2015). The scrutiny of these nicknames and names stands for an outstanding attempt to surface a good understanding of the most ambiguous and changeable figure of the civil rights movement of the 1960s. Nicknames such as Homeboy, Red, and Satan are very evocative in his life story because they reveal dark and nightmarish stereotypes and episodes of his depravity process in ghettoes and in prison during his childhood and adolescence. This trilogy of nicknames shows how he is involved in illegal and immoral activities such as gambling, gang life, drug dealings, and housebreakings. Therefore, names such as Malcolm X, El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz, and Omowale, on their behalf, introduce the reader to the protagonist’ rebirth process under Islamic influences with the perspective of quest of true identity on American soil and in Africa. They show how he becomes a radical Black Muslim, how he adopts orthodox Islam in Mecca, and how he ties a strong attachment to Africa.

Abstract (sommario):
The poetry of Robert Hayden explores the process of individual and collective social and spiritual transformation in a variety of’ contexts, including contemporary culture, the Bahá’í Faith, black history, art, literature, nature, disease, and suffering. In developing his themes and images, Hayden ‘works through many of the central issues and events shaping the modern world and moves towards a “re-centering” or re-focusing of vision around a spiritual reality. A close reading of a number of’ Hayden’s poems, including “Words in the Mourning Time,” “The Broken Dark,” “From the Corpse Woodpiles, from the Ashes,” “Middle Passage,” “Runagate, Runagate,” “The Dream (1863),” “El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz,” “The Night-Blooming Cereus,” and “For a Young Artist” reveals the poet’s concentration on this process of change and growth. In an age that champions despair and unbelief, Hayden’s poems are records of a journey “from Can’t to Can,” from grief to hope, from death to life, from suffering to comfort, from brokenness to wholeness, from the earthbound state to flight. True to his vision of art as “ultimately religious in the broadest sense of the term,” Hayden has created a body of work that eloquently depicts the struggles and achievements of the human spirit.

Abstract (sommario):
Al Shabaab is the largest militant organization fighting to oust the Somali government and the foreign military presence supporting it.1Al-shabab seeks to control the country in order to establish a society based on its rigid interpretation of Shariah law. Although based in Somalia, Al Shabaab also conducts attacks in neighboring countries, notably Kenya. Al Shabaab emerged as an independent organization around December 2006 after breaking away from the Islamic Courts Union (ICU), for which it had served as the military wing. Since the late 2000s, Al Shabaab has had close ties to Al Qaeda and other external extremism groups and has sought to frame the Somali struggle as part of a global jihadist movement. The group has engaged in bombings, suicide attacks, and armed assaults, especially against Somali government targets, private civilians, Christians, diplomats, foreign troops, and nongovernmental organization or aid workers .

Abstract (sommario):
Spike Lee's 1992 film, ''Malcolm X," is the most recent evidence ofthe increased popularity of Malcolm X (El Haj Malik El Shabazz). Thefilm, based on a screenplay by James Baldwin and Arnold Perl, sparkedcontroversy over "X" memorabilia and also a debate over the appropriateinterpretation of Malcolm X's legacy. For example, black nationalistAmiri Baraka opposed Lee's portrayal and criticized the film as an attemptto "make middle class Negroes sleep easier." Yet when the currentcontroversy and debate end, the Islamic aspects will remain, as before, the most significant and least recognized elements of Malcolm X'slegacy. This paper briefly examines this phenomenon in order to offer amore accurate and meaningful analysis of the significance of Malcolm X.Although Alex Haley's Autobiography of Malcolm X climbed to theNew York Times' best-seller list in 1992, popular media accounts, suchas Lee's film, have stimulated even greater social interest. As one writernotes, "if many blacks did not listen when he was alive, young blacks arelistening now." It is also interesting to note how "Malcolm X's appealhas crossed racial barriets in a way that would have been unthinkableduring his life." Nevertheless, the emergent popularity of Malcolm X inthe 1990s is a direct result of the lingering presence of racism and of hisown martydom in the struggle against it.Most mainstream analyses associate Malcolm X's message with vielence and hatred of white America. For example, his oft-quoted phrase,"by any means necessary," and his advocacy of martial arts proficiencyand rifle club formation for defenseless black victims of racial violence ...

Abstract (sommario):
This study is motivated by threats faced by Somalia and other countries in fighting terrorism. Although several studies have attempted to explain the rise and dynamics of terrorism groups particularly al-Shabaab, this work is predicated more on how the terrorist activities threaten Africa and beyond informed by how these operations are sustained. This study aims to investigate threats to the continent and beyond by Al-Shabab and Fundamental Terrorism in Somalia. In this study, a content analysis was used on quantitative and qualitative data obtained from publicly available datasets and secondary sources of research work on terrorism. The main contribution of this study is that, terrorism by the al-Shabaab is highly organized and that by skirting direct combat, the group has the potential for sustained fighting episodes despite waged campaigns to deter its spread. This is exacerbated by the reluctance to deploy many infantry forces from conventional armies to deal with the situation. The study may be useful to policymakers, terrorism experts, and scholars in accelerating measures of counter-terrorism.

Abstract (sommario):
Al-Shabaab is an example of a transnational terrorist organisation that has grown because of intricate historical, political, and socioeconomic reasons. Even though each group has its distinct history and traits, they all share certain similar beliefs, strategies, and goals. This chapter will look at how much regional and international security is being threatened by transnational terrorist organisations like Boko Haram and Al-Shabab, the local branches of Islamic State and Al-Qaeda. This chapter emphasises the tremendous influence these organisations have on local communities, governments, and international relations by studying their backgrounds, goals, strategies, and methods of taking advantage of weaknesses and conflicts. The case studies offered provide a greater comprehension of the local and global effects of their actions.

Abstract (sommario):
ABSTRACT: This article considers the place of Zionist tropes in the 17th century poems of Rabbi Shalom Shabazi in comparison with those found in medieval Sephardi poetry. Centuries after Shabazi's death, Yisrael Yeshayahu and several other Yemeni Zionists, located Shabazi's messianic poems in the literary and historical canon of Zionism. By correlating Shabazi with Yehudah Halevi and other Sephardi poets as heralds of Zionism before the establishment of the State of Israel, Yeshayahu and his fellow activists sought to determine a leading role for Yemeni Jews alongside what Sami Shalom Chetrit has called "Ashkenazi-Zionist 'history makers.'" In Shabazi, Yemeni Jewish leaders found an exemplar of time-honored Yemeni Judaism in a way that resonated with Zionist ideals. The article posits the existence of a continuum between Hayim Nahman Bialik's use of medieval Sephardi poetry and Yeshayahu's use of Shabazi's work; it explains why Yemeni Zionists chose Shabazi in particular as the linchpin of their argument for a proto-Zionist Yemeni cultural heritage; and also indicates the methods used by Yemeni Zionists, and Yeshayahu in particular, to successfully establish Shabazi as a forerunner to Zionism.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Genetically engineered medicines such as chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cells have great potential to be the next pillar of medical therapy beyond chemo- and traditional biologic therapies. To develop genetic medicines, new methods to understand their pharmacokinetics (PK) in humans are crucial. It is not feasible to perform traditional PK analysis for “living drugs”, because the genes themselves (in the form of DNA or RNA), are not typically responsible for the therapeutic effect. Rather, the protein products of the genes or the cells harboring the engineered genes are the actuators, and thus cannot be measured using standard HPLC or ligand binding immunoassays for PK analysis. We used a positron emission tomography (PET) reporter gene or “imaging tag” based on the intracellular bacterial enzyme dihydrofolate reductase (eDHFR) that can be paired with radiolabeled versions of trimethoprim (TMP). In this work, we evaluate the potential for immunogenicity using primary human cells and assays geared to assess low affinity and rare T cell clones that may react to eDHFR. We used overlapping pools of 15-mer eDHFR peptides and found that across 9 patients, there was little reactivity compared to EBV and CMV peptide controls. Further, the relative strength of reactivity to the eDHFR peptides was less than that of the viral peptides. Next, we showed that eDHFR iTag harboring CAR T cells were functionally comparable to unlabeled CAR T cells in vitro, and demonstrated strong, selective [18F]-TMP uptake in the eDHFR-expressing CAR T cells. Finally, using a glypican 3 (GPC3) CAR T rodent model, we performed a feasibility study to non-invasively track proliferation in antigen-harboring xenograft tumors over time with ex vivo correlation to anti-CD3 immunohistochemistry. These data demonstrate the potential for non-invasive monitoring of CAR T cells using PET imaging and translational applicability of DHFR/TMP radiotracers. Abstract (sommario):
The present paper aims to propose a classificatory and descriptive account of epistemic modal expressions in Shabaki to recognize their syntactic categories and semantic interpretations. The corpus is based on the data excerpted from everyday communication. Results suggest that Shabaki makes a rich use of expressions to express epistemic modality. Modality in Shabaki is expressed differently from other languages. Shabaki language displays an interesting interaction between epistemic modal expressions and negation.

Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of this paper on “Al Shabaab and its Violent Extremism in Kenya” aimed at exploring the dynamics of al Shabaab in Somalia as it affected Kenya. This descriptive research adopted judgmental sampling technique and relied mostly on secondary source (books, journal articles, monographs, internet materials etc) of data collection which were sourced in Nigerian libraries, subjected to content validity before analyzing qualitatively. Results of the findings revealed that the spillover of al Shabaab’s violent extremism to Kenya was caused by porous borders as well as local forces such as historic marginalization, propaganda technique and the presence of al Hijrah sect in Kenya. Al Shabaab has impacted negatively on Kenya’s security, diplomacy, economy as well as humanitarian services. Kenya has responded through the creation of Operation Linda Nchi and Operation Usalama Watch while United States, Africa Union Mission in Somalia, United Nations and European Union also assisted in fighting the dreaded sect according to findings. The contribution of these findings to the explanation of Rosenau’s linkage theory is excellent thereby deepening the understanding of its basic assumptions. Regrettably, Al Shabaab is still a potential threat to Kenya and the entire Horn of Africa, therefore, the paper recommends inclusive dialogue, national integration and constructive engagement as panacea for al Shabaab violent extremism.

Somaliaitself is a country that has just a strong government system, and hasjust recognized by international community. This phenomenon then ledto many attacks conducted by the Al-Shabaab. The attacks made Somalipeople who were not members of al-Shabaab felt insecure. With theassistance that came to the Somali government, al-Shabaab felt defensivetowards foreign countries, as well as international organizations such asIntergovernmental Authority on Drought and Desertification (IGADD)and the African Union. This is due to the fact that they felt that the assistanceprovided would affect Somalia, as they wanted to make the country with awhole Islamic system without the interference of western countries. Abstract (sommario):
Word order types constitute the most well- established and frequently cited generalization in language typology. Basic or canonical word order tends to fall into two main types: SOV (about 48% of world languages) or SVO (about 41%). SOV is assumed to have been the predominant and unmarked word order in most of the oldest attested Indo-European languages, as well as in Iranian languages. This paper investigates the basic word order in Shabaki, a modern northwest language of the Indo-Iranian family spoken by the Shabaki minority in Iraq. This study also measures the word order variation and provides a typological description of this language. An examination of Shabaki data reveals that it follows SOV, OSV, SVO, VSO, OVS, and VOS word order patterns in mono-transitive sentences. The most frequent (predominant and unmarked) word order in declarative sentences in Shabaki is SOV where the initial position is occupied by a nominative noun phrase, but constituents can appear at any position, creating grammatical sentences with different discursive distributions. In ditransitive sentences, (S) DO V IO is proven to be three fold higher in number than (S) IO V DO. (S) DO IO V and (S) IO DO V were also found in data. Keywords: Agreement, basic word order, case, clitics, Indo-Iranian languages, language typology, Shabaki Introduction Grammatical relations in human languages, such as those between a noun phrase and the verb, are primarily expressed by means of three different morphosyntactic strategies: word order, case marking, and agreement (Croft 1990: 101). All languages, rather than relying on just one of these mechanisms, use some combination of the three. In this paper, it is the intention to explore what elements of these three strategies Shabaki language employs to indicate the relationship that a noun bears to the verb in a clause. It also tries to explore the order of objects in ditransitive sentences.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractHarakat al-Shabaab al-Mujahideen, usually referred to as al-Shabaab (the youth), is known primarily as a Somali terrorist group. But since the end of 2008, it has functioned as a state power in large parts of Southern and Central Somalia. In this article, I analyze the main legal body of the group: theqāḍīcourt. In order to establish law and order in their territories, al-Shabaab has applied their own version ofsharī'a. The article reveals that al-Shabaab's application of criminal law follows the inherent logic of classical Islamic legal doctrines on several points. However, the al-Shabaab courts tend to overlook many of the strict requirements regarding evidence and procedure that were outlined by the medieval Muslim scholars in order to humanize Islamic law. Therefore, the legal reality of al-Shabaab's regime is far more brutal than that of most other Islamic-inspired regimes in the contemporary Muslim world. Al-Shabaab's practice of Islamic criminal law may be seen not only as a means to exercise control through fear but also as an effective way of filling the vacuum of insecurity and instability that has followed twenty years of violence and the absence of state institutions in its territories. I argue that, in order to understand al-Shabaab's current practice of criminal law, one has to take into consideration the group's jihadi-Salafi affiliation. According to Salafi notions, sharī'ais not only a means to an end, but an end in itself. As such,sharī'a(i.e., God's divine law) is the visual symbol of an Islamic state. Consequently, the application of Islamic criminal law, and especially of theḥudūdpunishments, provides al-Shabaab with political-religious legitimacy.

Abstract (sommario):
The article centres on the literary output of the Jordanian-British artist Nabil Shaban. In his texts, Shaban often rewrites various historical and popular narratives from the perspective of a person with a disability. This strategy, for instance, involves the investigation of the lives of certain historical fi gures, such as Ivar the Boneless, whom Shaban brings out of the disability closet. The concept of what may be termed „writing back to the non-disabled centre” is also conspicuous in Shaban’s rewritings of popular narratives, the best example being the parody of a zombie apocalypse narrative in the screenplay entitled Hoodies and the Crips. Taking recourse to such concepts as Julia Kristeva’s „the abject”, Barbara Creed’s „monstrous feminine” and Tobin Siebers’s „disability drag”, the article examines the subversive strategies used by Shaban in order to enter a dialogic relationship with non-disabled culture and history.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract The correct order of the first two kings of the Twenty-Fifth Dynasty has been the subject of a growing debate since Michael Bányai proposed a revision of the traditional chronological model in 2013. By placing Shabataka1 before Shabaka Bányai challenged the commonly accepted view according to which it was Shabaka who established the Twenty-Fifth Dynasty and secured Kushite control over all of Egypt after having re-conquered the North and disposed of his adversary Bocchoris of the Twenty-Fourth Dynasty. Since then Bányai’s proposal of modifying the sequence of the Kushite kings, thus making Shabataka Bocchoris’ opponent, has received a growing number of supporters who have brought forward additional arguments in favour of it. The present article introduces new arguments based on a careful analysis of prosopographic, archaeological, and epigraphic data from the Eastern Desert and Thebes—especially relating to the Kushite Nile Level Records at Karnak—which provide the strongest evidence for the sequence “Shabaka—Shabataka” hitherto adduced.

Abstract (sommario):
Gendered responses to the disengagement and reintegration of female defectors are needed to respond to trends that indicate increasing female radicalisation and growth in the recruitment of women into terrorist networks. The development of successful gender-sensitive amnesty policies and reintegration programmes is crucial, not only to prevent recidivism and re-engagement among female defectors, but also to mitigate the risk of further female radicalisation and recruitment at community level. This article, based on research conducted with female Al-Shabaab defectors in Kenya, explores women's gendered motives for joining the Al-Shabaab network, their experiences within it and their reasons for quitting in order to inform an evidence-based reintegration process. It identifies the gendered nuances involved in recruitment, disengagement and deradicalisation, and it also considers gender-specific aspects of reintegration, highlighting the need to focus on gendered needs, norms and the expectations of female Al-Shabaab defectors and the communities in which they are reintegrated.

Abstract (sommario):
Decades of power struggles among political rivals have resulted in Somalia being regarded as a ‘failed state’. The absence of a central government has allowed Al-Shabaab to take control of parts of Somalia and commit war crimes as well as crimes against humanity. Despite compelling prima facie evidence of these crimes, Al-Shabaab has not been held sufficiently accountable, leaving many victims without redress. This is due to the shortcomings of existing national and international accountability mechanisms. Somalia’s judicial branch faces significant capacity challenges that prevent it from adequately investigating and prosecuting war crimes. Countermeasures by religious fundamentalists and excessive reliance on informal dispute-resolution methods further frustrate the justice system’s efforts. Peacekeeping missions by international bodies such as the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) have also been ineffective. In addition, there are growing fears that the group’s reach will grow due to an increase in the revenue that it is able to generate. This article examines the shortcomings of the aforementioned accountability framework and offers solutions to address the gaps to ensure justice for the victims of Al-Shabaab.

An interview with musician Shabaka Hutchings, leader of the bands Sons of Kemet, The Comet is Coming and Shabaka and the Ancestors. The conversation starts with a discussion of multiplicity and unity, and the imperial habit of reducing multiplicity down to a single dominant unity, whether through imposing one religion, one view of empire, or one recognised form of art music. It looks at the different ways of viewing culture in the West and in African countries. And it discusses the relationship between jazz and classical music; improvisation; musical dialogue; South African music; transcendence through music; and musical healing.

Abstract (sommario):
Khilafiah issues in Malaysia have become polemics that give a negative impression to the community. The purpose of this writing is to highlight the Qiyas al-Shabah instrument in identifying the qiyas method used on issues arising among Islamic scholars in Malaysia. The difference in views of Islamic scholars is usually because of an individual’s propensity towards certain manhaj. The difference in manhaj significantly impacts the Qiyas al-Shabah which consequently be used in eliciting the nas of the Qur’an and al-Sunnah, as well as the words of the imams of the madhhab. Hence, Qiyas al-Shabah is one of the methods of ‘illah in Fiqh and understanding it leads to openness and tolerance. This research is a qualitative study which will use a reference approach that involves theoretical and practical analysis.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
This paper examines the chronology of the Nubian kings Piye, Shabaka, and Shabataka. The status of 712 BC as an ‘anchor date’ for the period is challenged and a ‘minimal chronology’, based on the highest known regnal dates of these kings, is presented, yielding the dates 728–706 BC for the reign of Piye, 706–692 BC for that of Shabaka, and 692–690 BC for that of Shabataka. It is suggested that the absence of evidence positively refuting the minimal chronology, which is shorter than any dating ever accepted or assumed for the earlier part of the Twenty-fifth Dynasty, shows how uncertain the period's chronology remains and that there may be room for a lower chronology.
