This is study, in first stage, uses documentary-quantitative method and aims to verify from the Epidemiological Monitoring of data query obtained from the Information System database and Notifiable Deseases (SINAN) from 2009-2012, rates of cases of women in situations of violence reported in Bauru/SP. General information regarding the records were collected notified in SINAN, identifying the type of violence, sociodemographic data, the consequences for the victims and referrals made to service agencies, only women aged over 18 years. Data were organized, coded and submitted to Estatistic Binomial test. In the second stage, carried out case studies in order to investigate the experiences of four participants regarding suffered sexual violence and consequences, as well as their perception of the aspects that contributed to the overrun or not this life event. This sample was obtained through hospital records Reference Service and Woman's Center on Violence Situation (CRAMSV) with thirty-two cases have been identified, which, subject to the eligibility criteria and the study resulted in ten cases and these four cases that could participate. The interviews were conducted individually after a call and ethinical procedures, using the Bardin's method (1977) for the analysis of the interviews. Results indicated predominance of physical violence (60.89%) followed by sexual violence (21.14%) and most women had the age of 18, low level of education and that only a minority of cases received appropriate referrals to the network of municipal service. We also observed the lack of follow-up mechanisms of the reported cases. Showed up significant deficiencies in the data record of the reported cases, obscuring the reality of the situation of violence against women, despite the notification by the SINAN. My dissertation tracks the production of "common sense" about female sexuality and psychology in nineteenth-century sensational British literature. I move from the sensation novel's heyday, represented by Wilkie Collins's The Moonstone (1868) and Mary Elizabeth Braddon's Lady Audley's Secret (1862), through the fin-de-siècle Gothic literary revival with Bram Stoker's Dracula(1895), and conclude with a reading of the representation of aberrant female sexuality in the emergent science of nineteenth-century sexology. For Victorian readers, few things could have seemed further removed from sensation literature--from lurid crime novels to sordid news stories to sexualized science--than common sense. Yet, my project illustrates the role of sensational literature in provoking the dark millennial fantasies that passed as common sense and often animated theories of femininity expressed in late-Victorian science.
Common sense retains its rhetorical force through the assumption that its premises arise naturally and apply universally. But if we take a historical view, a troubling pattern emerges: common sense has often worked to preserve reactionary views of femininity. For example, in the nineteenth century, common sense led medical professionals to the belief that a woman's reproductive system left her constitutionally more susceptible to "hysteria."
define common sense as the product of the frequent iteration of a particular train of associative logic that results in the naturalization and legitimation of claims about reality, even if those claims are both sensationalized and arbitrary. The rhetorical force of common sense requires the perpetual obscuration of its origins. The elusive and frustrating quality of common sense as a cognitive category derives from its ability, in Stuart Hall's words, to "represent itself as the 'traditional wisdom or truth of the ages,'
[when] in fact, it is deeply a product of history, 'part of the historical process'" ("Gramsci's Relevance" 431). Hall describes this type of associative relationship between disparate figures often exemplified in the logic of common sense as "an articulation." What Hall refers to as an "articulation" might also be called, when viewed through the lens of literary theory, a "metonymic chain," wherein the literal term for one thing is applied to another with which it becomes linked, articulated. Both terms—articulation and metonymic chain—effectively describe the illusion of necessary correspondence in mere arbitrary association.
My translation of this cultural phenomenon into the framework of literary analysis allows for a precise description of the rhetorical transformations involved in conjuring common sense. With frequent iteration, metonymic association may appear to be based on some more substantial similarity—not circumstantial, but necessary; not the product of sensationalism, but the inevitable conclusion derived from and constituting common sense. Common sense regarding female sexuality has frequently been preserved through sensationalism; but paradoxically, sensationalism is often most effective when its characteristic paranoia seems somehow self-evidently justified, even rational. In other words, sensationalism works best to consolidate the paranoid patterns of associative logic informing the nineteenth-century figuration of femininity when it appears not to be working at all—when sensationalism takes on the weight of common sense.

The relationship between sexual abuse and juvenile prostitution is explored through interviews with eight women who had had both of these experiences in their lives. Analysis of the narrative data identified both social-structural and intra-psychic factors that played a role in leading these sexual abuse survivors into juvenile prostitution.
Social-structural factors are defined as the cultural and societal conditions within which children are raised and socialised and within which they must learn to function. The social-structural factors identified by this study were cultural factors, gender stereotyping, the family, the schools, social networks, social service agencies, employment opportunities, religious institutions, sexual abuse and entrance into prostitution. Social-structural factors affect the individual at the intra-psychic or psychological level. Intra-psychic factors identified here were alienation, identity and personal control. Sullivan's (1984) theory of critical interpretation was used to examine the limiting effects of the social structures on the lives, behavior and choices of these women.
This research found that sexual abuse and the victims' responses to sexual abuse prepared and trained the young girls for prostitution. Further, alienation appeared to be a major determining factor that combined with the presence of sexual abuse influenced the outcome of juvenile prostitution. Finally, these young women found that their personal control was limited

About 30 million women in the U.S. are estimated to be victims of sex crimes in their lifetimes. However, sex crimes, especially those committed against immigrants are the least reported crime in the country. Some sex crime victims say the fear of media criticism discourages them from reporting the crime. in May 2011, an African maid working at a New York hotel accused Dominique Strauss-Kahn, the former director of the International Monetary Fund, of sexually assaulting her. This qualitative content analysis examined the coverage of the DSK case, by three leading international newspapers: the New York Times, the Guardian and Le Monde. Findings suggest that Strauss-Kahn received more favorable coverage than Diallo. Frames identified in the coverage include the importance of status/prominence, race, culture differences, victim-blaming, male privilege, socioeconomic differences and focus on appearance. the study recommends that news organizations avoid judgmental coverage of sex crimes and consider identifying victims by allowing them to tell their side of the story.

This archival and qualitative research adds insight into the psychosocial consequences females of sexual victimization incur. Sexual abuse is a pervasive, complex societal problem experienced by 30%-46% of American females. The psychosocial consequences are numerous, often severe, and can result in death. They include: anxiety, BPD, denial, dependence, despair, eating disorders, destructive relationships, fear, guilt, hallucinations, helplessness, hopelessness, hysteria, insecurity, isolation, MPD, nightmares, numbness, passivity, pessimism, phobias, PTSD, rage, self-loathing, sexual dysfunctions, shame, shock, sleeping disorders, stigmatization, stress-related disorders, substance abuse, and suicide. The severity of psychosocial consequences to female victims varies greatly depending upon the degree, duration, and emotion surrounding the abuse, the victim's health, and the health of the victim's social network. In conclusion, strategies suggested in the literature to combat female sexual victimization are outlined.

Resumo: Esta pesquisa visa contribuir para a compreensão das representações sociais sobre violência sexual elaboradas pelos profissionais da saúde. Para tanto, buscou-se construir o perfil das vítimas e do agravo, a partir de dados fornecidos pela Secretaria de Segurança Pública de São Paulo, para confrontar estas informações com as representações encontradas e entender se estas podem influenciar na prática de atendimento ou na naturalização da violência. Além disso, foram realizadas entrevistas em profundidade, com roteiro semiestruturado, com os profissionais que fazem o atendimento às vítimas em dois locais de referência no município de São Carlos. Estas informações foram submetidas à análise utilizando-se do software Atlas.ti e da técnica de análise de conteúdo. Foi possível observar, a partir dos dados colhidos, que a violência sexual atinge majoritariamente pessoas do sexo feminino, menores de 14 anos, vitimadas em local doméstico por pessoas do seu convívio social. Esta também é a compreensão dos profissionais sobre o perfil mais afetado pela violência, divergindo apenas quanto a faixa etária mais atingida, caracterizando estes indivíduos como jovens. Os profissionais representam a violência sexual como qualquer ato de cunho sexual praticado contra a vontade da vítima, com diferentes compreensões sobre suas causas, ao tempo que reconhecem as consequências como "um grande trauma" para a vítima. Abstract: This research aims to contribute to the understanding of social representations on sexual violence elaborated by health professionals. Therefore, we sought to construct the profile of the victims and the offense, based on data provided by the Public Security Secretariat of São Paulo, to compare this information with the representations found and to understand whether these may influence the practice of care or naturalization of violence. Beyond that, interviews were conducted in depth, with a semi-structured script, with the professionals who perform care for the victims in two reference sites in the city of São Carlos. This information was submitted to the analysis using Atlas.ti software and the content analysis technique. From the data collected, it was possible to observe that sexual violence affects the majority of female victims, under 14 years of age, victims of domestic violence. This is also the professionals' understanding of the profile most affected by violence, differing only in the age group most affected, characterizing these individuals as young people. Professionals portray sexual violence as any sexual act practiced against the will of the victim, with different understandings of its causes, while recognizing the consequences as a "major trauma" for the victim. Many professionals say that it is not possible to prevent the problem, others point generally to a "better orientation" as a way to prevent it, among other solutions. Preliminary results from research show some promising results for the Sex Offender Treatment Services Collaborative – Intellectual Disability (SOTSEC-ID) treatment on offence recidivism. However, further research that explores the processes of behaviour change is required. This study answered the research question: What are the key mechanisms to therapeutic change in individuals with ID who have completed a sex offender treatment programme (SOTP)? A qualitative grounded theory methodology was used to understand the processes of change. A semi-structured interview was used with 12 participants. The results showed that relationship experience, acceptance of responsibility, being able to remember the details of the group, group processes, understanding their own risk and practical strategies were the key areas that are influential in the change process. Barriers to change were also highlighted. The study concluded that there are other factors such as group processes important in the process of change that influence behaviour change, other than the content of the treatment. Group treatment is supported for this population.

“Indeed in rape cases it is the victim who is most often placed on trial rather than the perpetrator, accused of having ulterior motives and subjected to degrading questions with often pornographic overtones. Prosecutors might fail to adequately address the victims needs and all too often, information is either intentionally or unintentionally withheld from victims.” The victims of sexual offences have to face not only the consequences of the sexual crime that was perpetrated upon them, but they also have to deal with the effects of the criminal justice system. Victims who take part in the criminal justice system should not be exposed to unnecessary distress and trauma. The victims of sexual offences must not be re-victimised by the criminal justice system. Re-victimisation has been coined to describe the experience where victims are subjected to further victimisation by the very state organs to whom they turn for assistance. This has the effect that the victim is victimised twice, first by the offender and then by the criminal justice system. It is therefore the duty of the law to protect this group of witnesses from such a traumatic and damaging experience. The question that needs to be answered in this research is whether the Sexual Offences and Related Matters Amendment has made any difference in respect of protection of victims sexual crimes. It was concluded that the Sexual Offences Act is indeed a step in the right direction to protect the rights of victims of sexual offences but that it could have afforded more protection.

The term ‘sexual harassment’ has been treated as key to victim resistance against normalising constructions of unwanted sexual/gendered attention as ‘just sex’ and as a ‘trivial’ part of everyday life. The act of labelling unwanted conduct as sexual harassment has been constituted as an important political step in reframing normalised problematic conduct as gendered violence as well as legitimising recipient access to formalised routes of amelioration. However concerns have been raised that recipients, particularly women, are ‘reluctant’ to use the term ‘sexual harassment’ to describe their experiences and resist unwanted attention using laws and policies designed to deal with this issue. Drawing on resources from discursive, postmodern and feminist approaches, this thesis explores how constructions of the term ‘sexual harassment’ and strategies to deal with it shape, enable and constrain resistances against gendered/sexualised power relations inscribed in manifestations of unwanted attention. It unpacks how discourses of sexual harassment polarise labelling and non-labelling behaviour to produce the former as an act of resistance and the latter as non-resistance. This project moves away from this polarisation to consider boundary construction around the issue of sexual harassment. Through discursive analysis of narratives identified through Q methodological analysis and constructions produced in interview data, this thesis examines how both inclusion and exclusion of relevant issues in multiple understandings of sexual harassment and policy considerations impact challenges that can be made to unwanted conduct. Central to this examination is critical consideration of the operation of gendered power relations within sexual harassment discourses. I pay particular attention to how various constructions of resistance within sexual harassment discourses become embedded in and re(produce) gendered binaries of dominance-subordination. This thesis considers how gendered binaries might be transgressed and destabilised by articulating alternative spaces for the performance of resistance

Child sex tourism is tourism organised with the primary purpose of facilitating a commercial sexual relationship with a child. It involves a segment of the local child sex industry that is directly connected to both an international and domestic tourist market. The increase of tourism has brought with it complications in that tourism is being used as a means for sex tourists to initiate contact with children. Aside from child sex tourists who are paedophiles, there are those who engage in the opportunistic exploitation of children while travelling on business or for other reasons. There are a number of social and economic factors leading to child sex tourism and the effect is that child victims are exposed to immediate harm, irreversible damage and even death. As South Africa's tourism industry expands into one of the country’s top earners of foreign currency, it is unfortunate to note that its child sex tourist trade is also on the increase. Reports show that sex tours are as easily organised as wine route tours in Cape Town. Commercial sexual exploitation of children is prevalent in South Africa and has become more organised in recent years. A comprehensive response to the problem is essential to ensure that South Africa does not become a “safe haven” for child sex tourists. Effective laws at home and the extraterritorial application of these laws to prosecute South African nationals for crimes committed abroad are imperative. Significant steps are being taken both nationally and internationally to target child sex tourism. South Africa has ratified several international instruments on children’s rights, trafficking in persons, child labour, and discrimination against women and young girls, all of which relate to child sex tourism. In doing so, South Africa has made an international commitment to uphold the provisions of these instruments and give effect to them. South Africa is therefore under an international obligation to create the necessary structures and apply mechanisms and resources to combat child sex tourism.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of NLP Reframing as a means of decreasing sexual response when aggression is aroused by a female with incarcerated rape offenders. The process of reframing involves a redirection of the positive intentions underlying rape behavior by associating new acceptable and nonviolent behaviors to the same intention. The paradoxical nature of this method allows for measurement of newly acquired behavior, a decrease in the maladaptive behavior (rape) or a decrease in some representation of the maladaptive behavior. In this study, a representation was created by arousing the aggression level of the participants toward a female followed by measurement of sexual response as measured by the Sexual Imagery Levels 1 and 3 of the Rorschach. A post-test only control group design was utilized. The sample for this study included 26 rape offenders incarcerated at the Arizona Correctional Training Center in Tucson. Participants ranged from 18 to 28 years of age and had a mean age of 23.33 years; had a mean I.Q. of 112.71 on the Culture Fair Intelligence Test and included 13 Anglos, 7 Mexican Americans, 4 Blacks, and 2 Native Americans. Data analysis for hypotheses testing involved ANCOVA with the total number of responses on the Rorschach being the covariate. Significant results beyond the .05 level of confidence were obtained on one of the two directional hypotheses (Sexual Imagery Level 3), suggesting that reframing rape behavior using the NLP method with incarcerated rape offenders may be effective in decreasing sexual response at a more symbolic level.

The sexual victimization can be understood as power relationship between an adult and a child, in which the first coerces the victim so that it meets their interests, expectations and desires. The teacher is a key figure on breaking the silence about child sexual abuse, for being someone the child trusts and can easily. However, despite being required to talk about sexuality, identify and report cases of sexual violence in their students, many teachers are afraid to do a project on this topic, because they fell personal and professional unprepared, either by fear or reprisals from family or school. Keeping this in view, this is a descriptive qualitative study that aims to investigate understandings about the concept and the prevention of child sexual abuse reports in sexteen teachers from kindergaten. So, first, the research project was submitted and approved by an Ethics Committee to then make contact with the participanting teachers. On days previoulsy scheduled they responded to the interview by signing the consent form, and the interaction was audio-recorded and full transcribed for analysis. This way based on content analysis, where the thematic content was grouped into categories and subcategories. The results indicate that most of the teachers understand sexual violence as a phenomenon that goes beyond the sexual act. This violence was explained as a consequence of a dysfunctional family, the perpetrator psychological disorders, socieconomic factors, and associated with religion. Essa tese teve como objetivo identificar, ordenar e entender quais eram as estratégias dos relatos (os argumentos e suas intenções) e as representações da sexualidade que compunham os autos de crimes sexuais queixados na comarca de Ribeirão Preto entre as décadas de 1870/1970. Para entendê-las alguns temas que veiculavam valores considerados ideais e normativos das relações de gênero foram apresentados resumíveis na vivência da heterossexualidade adulta no casamento. A um banco de dados de 101 autos de crimes sexuais datados entre 1871/1941 (Código Penal 1890) foram comparadas informações de outros 220 autos datados entre 1942/1979 (Código Penal 1940), ambos pertencentes ao 1º, 2° e 4° Ofícios da comarca ribeirão-pretana e sob responsabilidade do Arquivo Público e Histórico de Ribeirão Preto. Estes dois conjuntos de autos foram comparados quanto à caracterização (1) dos casos, (2) dos acusados/vítimas e (3) das estratégias de relato e representações da sexualidade. A análise recorreu ao cálculo de freqüência simples para 1 e 2, e à busca de regularidades e cortes temáticos nos depoimentos dos autos para 3. Diante disso, o argumento defendido é que mesmo havendo mudanças nas estratégias, nos casos e nos participantes, as representações da sexualidade continuaram enfatizando aspectos tradicionais das relações de gênero. Assim, mesmo se na década de 1940 a maioria das queixas muda da tentativa de efetivar o casamento (combinado ou não com o acusado, alegando a vítima que perder a virgindade configurava crime passível de reparação pelo matrimônio) para a tentativa de condenar o acusado (vitimação sexual de crianças, parentes, mulheres e homens de forma não consentida e com uso de força física), o vitimado sempre diz ser moralmente idôneo (mulher e homem honestos e de boa conduta enganados ou violentados a contragosto; criança inocente corrompida pelo contato precoce e violento com a sexualidade), e o acusado se considera erroneamente imputado (ethos masculino: o parceiro já estava corrompido ou se entregou livremente às relações sexuais; o acusado estava acometido de doença ou desvio que o impedia de se portar adequadamente). Dessa forma os participantes para atingirem seus objetivos enfatizam nos relatos aspectos tradicionais de gênero e sexualidade, pois eram estes os demandados pelos discursos e codex jurídico (que são mais resistentes, mas não indiferentes, às mudanças sociais).This research aimed to identify, organize and understand which were the gender strategies and representations of sexuality identified in sexual crime charges in Ribeirão Pretos judicial district between the 1870s and 1970s. In order to understand them, themes that informed about gender normative values and ideals (which can be condensed into the adult heterosexuality in marriage) were presented. A database of 101 documents (police inquiries and sexual crime suits) between 1871 and 1941 (1890 Brazilian Penal Code) were compared to 220 documents between 1942 and 1979 (1940 Brazilian Penal Code), both belonging to the 1st, 2nd and 4th Judicial Offices under responsibility of the Arquivo Público e Histórico de Ribeirão Preto. These two sets of documents were compared in order to characterize: (1) the cases of the inquiries and suits, (2) the involved ones (victim and defendant), (3) their gender strategies and representations of sexuality. For the analysis, simple calculation of frequency in (1) and (2), and search for thematic regularities in (3) were carried out. The research argument is that, although the strategies, the involved persons and the cases characterizations have changed; the representations of sexuality continued emphasizing traditional aspects of gender relations the same ones demanded by the legal codex. Therefore, even that, in the 1940s, the aim of the charges changed from solving the complaint through marriage between defendant and victim (consented loss of virginity) to criminal punishment (as a reparation to the non consented sexual intercourse), the victimized ones continued empathizing their sexual and moral honesty (modesty, shyness etc.), and the defendants continued saying that the inquiries and suits were wrong, and they were unfairly accused (they had a job, were respectful and presented good behavior, or a mental disorder).

While activists and others have argued that the legitimization of biased attitudes and stereotypes by political leaders foments violence against minority groups, criminological research in the U.S. has focused more on "threat" hypotheses that view hate crime as a retaliatory response to perceived gains or encroachment of targeted groups. Another view suggests that heightened public visibility of hate crimes or other bias issues, usually in the form of media coverage, increases hate crimes. This study compares the effect on anti-LGB crimes of events representing political threat (a court decision legalizing marriage equality) and political legitimization of bias (passage of a ban on marriage equality), both of which occurred in California in 2008. The study also tests effects of media coverage prior to the ban on marriage equality. Results showed a statistically significant increase in anti-LGB hate crimes after the ban on same-sex marriage. There was no effect on anti-LGB crime counts after the court decision to legalize marriage equality, or during the media campaign leading up to the vote to ban marriage equality.

Thesis (M.A.(English) --University of Limpopo, 2010.This dissertation examines the way in which two South African novelists, Zakes Mda and J.M. Coetzee, portray the sexual abuse of women during the apartheid and post-apartheid eras. The two selected novels used in this research are The Madonna of Excelsior (2002) by Mda and Disgrace (2000) by Coetzee. The research, furthermore, analyses the attitudes of the sexual abusers and their victims in both eras as well as examines the effects of socio-economic imbalances that might have prompted the men to sexually abuse women whom they should be offering protection against any form of violence and abuse. The study furthermore identifies and analyses the factors that hinder victims from reporting their sexual abuse to the police. Finally, this dissertation also presents a comparative study of the differences and the similarities between the way the two novelists portray sexual abuse.
