Abstract (sommario):
Web service composition allows developers to create and deploy applications that take advantage of the capabilities of service-oriented computing. Such applications provide the developers with reusability opportunities as well as seamless access to a wide range of services that provide simple and complex tasks to meet the clients’ requests in accordance with the service-level agreement (SLA) requirements. Web service composition issues have been addressed as a significant area of research to select the right web services that provide the expected quality of service (QoS) and attain the clients’ SLA. The proposed model enhances the processes of web service selection and composition by minimizing the number of integrated Web Services, using the Multistage Forward Search (MSF). In addition, the proposed model uses the Spider Monkey Optimization (SMO) algorithm, which improves the services provided with regards to fundamentals of service composition methods symmetry and variations. It achieves that by minimizing the response time of the service compositions by employing the Load Balancer to distribute the workload. It finds the right balance between the Virtual Machines (VM) resources, processing capacity, and the services composition capabilities. Furthermore, it enhances the resource utilization of Web Services and optimizes the resources’ reusability effectively and efficiently. The experimental results will be compared with the composition results of the Smart Multistage Forward Search (SMFS) technique to prove the superiority, robustness, and effectiveness of the proposed model. The experimental results show that the proposed SMO model decreases the service composition construction time by 40.4%, compared to the composition time required by the SMFS technique. The experimental results also show that SMO increases the number of integrated ted web services in the service composition by 11.7%, in comparison with the results of the SMFS technique. In addition, the dynamic behavior of the SMO improves the proposed model’s throughput where the average number of the requests that the service compositions processed successfully increased by 1.25% compared to the throughput of the SMFS technique. Furthermore, the proposed model decreases the service compositions’ response time by 0.25 s, 0.69 s, and 5.35 s for the Excellent, Good, and Poor classes respectively compared to the results of the SMFS Service composition response times related to the same classes.

Abstract (sommario):
The automatic service composition is discussed in the article. The method is proposed for building the service composition based on the processing of statistical data on individual applying services (tasks) by users. The method is based on linking tasks to each other, determining data dependencies, parameters of services whose values are rigidly set by the composition of services, and parameters whose values can be changed by the user are highlighted. Service compositions are built in the form of a directed graph of DAG. The methods have been developed for reducing the set of obtained service compositions, which allow us to highlight useful ones and rank them by degree of use. In particular, equivalent service compositions based on isomorphism of DAG graphs are determined, trivial ones are discarded, and only compositions that lead to the published result are left behind.

Abstract (sommario):
The proliferation of sensor devices and services along with the advances in event processing brings many new opportunities as well as challenges. It is now possible to provide, analyze and react upon real-time, complex events in urban environments. When existing event services do not provide such complex events directly, an event service composition maybe required. However, it is difficult to determine which event service candidates (or service compositions) best suit users' and applications' quality-of-service requirements. A sub-optimal service composition may lead to inaccurate event detection, lack of system robustness etc. In this paper, the authors address these issues by first providing a quality-of-service aggregation schema for complex event service compositions and then developing a genetic algorithm to efficiently create near-optimal event service compositions. The authors evaluate their approach with both real sensor data collected via Internet-of-Things services as well as synthesised datasets.

Abstract (sommario):
Deciding on Web service equivalence in process-aware service compositions is a crucial challenge throughout the composition life cycle. However, restricting such decisions to (activity) label equivalence is not sufficient for many practical applications: if two activities and Web services respectively have equivalent labels, does this necessarily mean they are equivalent as well? In many scenarios (e.g., evolution of a composition schema or mining of completed composition instances), other factors also play an important role. Examples include context information (e.g., input and output messages) and information on the position of Web services within compositions. In this paper, the authors introduce the whole composition life cycle and discuss specific requirements for Web service equivalence along its different phases. The authors define adequate equivalence notions for the design, execution, analysis, and evolution of service compositions. This paper focuses on attribute and position equivalence and contributes a new understanding and treatment of equivalence notions in service compositions.

Abstract (sommario):
Service-oriented architecture is a widely accepted service used for supporting consolidation and integration functions under an enterprise system which are complex in nature but with an intelligent framework which helps in integrating the services in an optimistic and dynamic manner for getting the task done. For any service-oriented architecture-based application, its services are the main components, as it requires service compositions for answering various requests. There exist many possible service compositions for completing a task. To find an optimum composition from those dynamically present during run time is another crucial aspect for the success of this architecture. The present research elaborated a novel idea for optimal composition of services in SOA or any other service-based system. This paper covers a case study along with the outcomes of the experiment which indicates the efficiency and validity of the proposed technique.

Abstract (sommario):
Service-oriented architecture (SOA) has emerged as a flexible software design style. SOA focuses on the development, use, and reuse of small, self-contained, independent blocks of code called web services that communicate over the network to perform a certain set of simple tasks. Web services are integrated as composite services to offer complex tasks and to provide the expected services and behavior in addition to fulfilling the clients’ requests according to the service-level agreement (SLA). Web service selection and composition problems have been a significant area of research to provide the expected quality of service (QoS) and to meet the clients’ expectations. This research paper presents a hybrid web service composition model to solve web service selection and composition problems and to optimize web services’ resource utilization using k-means clustering and knapsack algorithms. The proposed model aims to maximize the service compositions’ QoS and minimize the number of web services integrated within the service composition using the knapsack algorithm. Additionally, this paper aims to track the service compositions’ QoS attributes by evaluating and tracking the web services’ QoS using the reward function and, accordingly, use the k-means algorithm to decide to which cluster the web service belongs. The experimental results on a real dataset show the superiority and effectiveness of the proposed algorithm in comparison with the results of the state–action–reward–state–action (SARSA) and multistage forward search (MFS) algorithms. The experimental results show that the proposed model reduces the average time of the web service selection and composition processes to 37.02 s in comparison to 47.03 s for the SARSA algorithm and 42.72 s for the MFS algorithm. Furthermore, the average of web services’ resource utilization results increased by 4.68% using the proposed model in comparison to the resource utilization by the SARSA and MFS algorithms. In addition, the experimental results showed that the average number of service compositions using the proposed model improved by 26.04% compared with the SARSA and MFS algorithms.

Abstract (sommario):
In this paper we study the issue of service composition, for services that export a representation of their behavior in the form of a finite deterministic transition system. In particular, given a specification of the target service requested by the client as a finite deterministic transition system, the problem we face is how we can exploit the computations of the available services for realizing the computations of the target service. While ways to tackle such a problem are known, in this paper we present a new technique that is based on the notion of simulation, which is still optimal from the computational complexity point. Notably, such a technique, opens up the possibility of devising composition in a "just-in-time" fashion. Indeed, we show that, by exploiting simulation, it is actually possible to implicitly compute all possible compositions at once, and delay the choice of the actual composition to run-time.

Abstract (sommario):
The continuous adoption of service-oriented architecture (SOA) and web services across vertical industries, geographies, and organization sizes generates new major security concerns both for individuals and organizations. Many of the features that make web services attractive, including greater accessibility of data, dynamic application-to-application connections, and relative autonomy are at odds with traditional security models and controls. Current web service composition technologies still present serious risks to individual and enterprise security and privacy. In the presence of multiple providers that coordinate to provide a composite web service, these issues are amplified. Web services security, privacy, and forensics investigations are therefore becoming a serious concern, especially with the tremendous increase in cybernetic crimes. The aim of this work is to draw a comprehensive overview about security aspects related to web services composition by considering different branches related to security, privacy, and forensics investigations. For each security aspect, the problem statement and related works are discussed. Then, a proposed approach to deal with the aspect under consideration is presented.

Abstract (sommario):
Due to the lack of domain and interface knowledge, it is difficult for users to create suitable service processes according to their needs. Thus, the paper puts forward a new service composition recommendation method. The method is composed of two steps: the first step is service component recommendation based on recurrent neural network (RNN). When a user selects a service component, the RNN algorithm is exploited to recommend other matched services to the user, aiding the completion of a service composition. The second step is service composition recommendation based on Naive Bayes. When the user completes a service composition, considering the diversity of user interests, the Bayesian classifier is used to model their interests, and other service compositions that satisfy the user interests are recommended to the user. Experiments show that the proposed method can accurately recommend relevant service components and service compositions to users.

Abstract (sommario):
Services enable the transformation of the World Wide Web as distributed interoperable systems interacting beyond organizational boundaries. Service licensing enables broader usage of services and a means for designing business strategies and relationships. A service license describes the terms and conditions for the use and access of the service in a machine interpretable way that services could be able to understand. Service-based applications are largely grounded on composition of independent services. In that scenario, license compatibility is a complex issue, requiring careful attention before attempting to merge licenses. The permissions and the prohibitions imposed by the licenses of services would deeply impact the composition. Thus, service licensing requires a comprehensive analysis on composition of these rights and requirements conforming to the nature of operations performed and compensation of services used in composition. In this paper, we analyze the compatibility of service license by describing a matchmaking algorithm. Further, we illustrate the composability of service licenses by creating a composite service license that is compatible with the licenses being composed.

Foster, Simon. "A compositional semantic theory for service composition". Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2010. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/1723/.

Abstract (sommario):
Service Composition refers to a popular modern software paradigm for building applications by combining distributed reactive components using the World-Wide-Web as the medium. The approach is characterised by the use of standardised protocols, languages and representations such as XML, which ensures that services are platform agnostic. Whilst the architecture is well understood for simple single-interaction services built in the style of classical procedures from the traditional programming paradigm, much discussion is still taking place with regard to more complicated, fully reactive services, where the consumer interacts in a stateful manner. The aim of this Thesis is to investigate the way in which composite Web services are built, and provide a useful semantic theory for service composition. Inspiration for this comes from several sources, including existing technologies such as WS-BPEL and WSMO, and the workflow patterns research, which defines a diverse collection of control-flow patterns which should be provided by a service composition language. My approach to service composition is based on Abstract Timed Process Calculus. Core to this approach is compositionality – a Web service model must be semantically decomposable to allow component manipulation. An Abstract Timed Process Calculus allows elegant modelling of component systems through a variety of synchronisation patterns such as isochronic broadcast. In this work I will seek to advance this area by constructing a novel timed process calculus which seeks to surpass previous calculi. This calculus will form the underlying meta-model for a semantic theory for a service composition language called Cashew-A. The semantic theory will be useful for both verification and execution of composite Web services.

Abstract (sommario):
The goal of this thesis is to provide enhanced mechanisms to deploy competitive services in a rapid and cost-effective manner. To achieve this goal, we first propose an automatic service composition model relying on an IMS/Web converged environment. This service composition model is intended to be one in which even non-professional users can easily reuse existing services to create new services. To further improve the automatic service composition feature, three strategies including passive update, active update and hybrid update are proposed and analyzed. We then propose a centralized service exposure framework for a variey of services, including Telecom / Web / Device / user-generated services. This framework aims at enhancing the user-centric and convergence features, and providing the unified access to diverse services.Subsequently, two P2P based service information sharing models are designed to complement the centralized service exposure model : i) A hierarchical P2P based model, which reuses Chord for guaranteeing the service discovery efficiency, meanwhile adopts the concept of abstract service publication and discovery for enabling the ambiguous services searching. ii) A triplex P2P overlay based model, which mainly targets the devices offered services. In this model, we use the gateways to delegate the devices residing in them for the global service exposure, and use a triplex overlay based architecture, which includes an underlying unstructured P2P layer, a Semantic Overlay Network (SON) based overlay and a service dependency overlay, for the service information sharing and discovery

Abstract (sommario):
It is predicted that Service-oriented Architectures (SOA) will have a high impact on future electronic business and markets. Services will provide an self-contained and standardised interface towards business and are considered as the future platform for business-to-business and business-toconsumer trades. Founded by the complexity of real world business scenarios a huge need for an easy, flexible and automated creation and enactment of service compositions is observed. This survey explores the relationship of service composition with workflow management—a technology/ concept already in use in many business environments. The similarities between the both and the key differences between them are elaborated. Furthermore methods for composition of services ranging from manual, semi- to full-automated composition are sketched. This survey concludes that current tools for service composition are in an immature state and that there is still much research to do before service composition can be used easily and conveniently in real world scenarios. However, since automated service composition is a key enabler for the full potential of Service-oriented Architectures, further research on this field is imperative. This survey closes with a formal sample scenario presented in appendix A to give the reader an impression on how full-automated service composition works.

Abstract (sommario):
Security assurance of Service-Based Systems (SBS) is a necessity and a key challenge in Service Oriented Computing. Several approaches have been introduced in order to take care of the security aspect of SBSs, from the design to the implementation stages. Such solutions, however, require expertise with regards to security languages and technologies or modelling formalisms. Furthermore, existing approaches allow only limited verification of security properties over a service composition, as they focus just on specific properties and require expressing compositions and properties in a model based formalism. In this thesis we present a unified security aware service composition approach capable of validation of arbitrary security properties. This approach allows SBS designers to build secure applications without the need to learn formal models thanks to security descriptors for services, being they self-appointed or certified by an external third-party. More specifically, the framework presented in this thesis allows expressing and propagating security requirements expressed for a security composition to requirements for the single activities of the composition, and checking security requirements over security service descriptors. The approach relies on the new core concept of secure composition patterns, modelling proven implications of security requirements within an orchestration pattern. The framework has been implemented and tested extensively in both a SBS design-time and runtime scenario, based respectively on Eclipse BPEL Designer and the Runtime Service Discovery Tool.

Bruce e Boring. L52242 Realistic Hardness Limits for In-Service Welding. Chantilly, Virginia: Pipeline Research Council International, Inc. (PRCI), marzo 2005. http://dx.doi.org/10.55274/r0011365.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
During the qualification of procedures for welding onto in-service pipelines, for the purpose of installing repair sleeves or hot tap branch connections, heat-affected zone (HAZ) hardness is often used as an indicator of cracking susceptibility. The objective of this project was to further develop and validate hardness evaluation criteria that can be used to quantify the trade-offs that can be made between HAZ hardness, hydrogen level, and chemical composition for welds made onto in-service pipelines. The initial work involved evaluating a previously-developed HAZ hardness evaluation criterion for a wider range of conditions using existing data. Several variations of this criterion were developed for a range of pipe material chemical compositions and for a range of thicknesses. The remainder of the work involved conducting additional experiments to further validate these criteria.

Hill, Richard, e Aquiles Perez Molinari. PR-334-174504-R01 Suitability of Line Pipe Materials for Sour Service Literature Research Summary. Chantilly, Virginia: Pipeline Research Council International, Inc. (PRCI), giugno 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.55274/r0011496.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Literature search focused on contributing factors for the appearance of near surface hard zones in line pipe steels manufactured using TMCP plate has been developed. Additional literature search was conducted on the influence of near surface hard zones on sulfide stress cracking of line pipe steels manufactured using TMCP plate. It can be inferred from the collective research evaluated that the chemical composition, rolling temperatures, scale formation during hot rolling and the accelerated cooling process contribute to the likelihood of forming near surface hard zones in TMCP plates used for LSAW line pipe.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The Global Streaming Strategy Assessment identifies the range of sectors emerging in the streaming video marketplace. It identifies how key conditions such as ownership and underlying technology norms shape different experiences by country and the characteristics that organise distinct sectors of service. The assessment uses data about the composition of service libraries to identify different strategies and value propositions on offer.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Motivated by the need for semantically well-founded and algorithmically managable formalism that is based on description logics (DLs), but is also firmly grounded on research in the reasoning about action community. Our main contribution is an analysis of how the choice of the DL influences the complexity of standard reasoning tasks such as projection and executability, which are important for Web service discovery and composition.
