This is an exploration beginning with memory of growing up in and exploring a forest surrounding my childhood home. This environment encompassed overwhelming scale and comforting intimacy, with a small intervention that related them. My thesis attempts to extract memory from growing up in the woods and create mediating, complimentary built interventions in a hypothetical world of meaning. It is an exercise in creating for others by extracting from personal memory and identifying personal sensibilities. With abstract spatial drawings, architecture's possible influence is understood at a slower pace. Through layered colored pencil drawings, my work attempts to depict human influence and its enhancement on the natural world surrounding it.

This thesis challenges a number of claims that are made in the context of the euthanasia debate: that there is only one version of the good death; that rights discourse is the most appropriate vehicle by which to secure legal recognition of a right to die; that the Netherlands is either a model for reform or the epitome of a slippery slope in its regulation of euthanasia; and that a key argument in the euthanasia debate, the sanctity of life doctrine, is a fixed, immutable concept. In this thesis I use process sociology, developed by Norbert Elias, in order to capture changing sensibilities toward death and dying in the common law jurisdictions (Australia, England, the United States of America, Canada and New Zealand) and in the Netherlands. At the same time I analyse changing attitudes among key groups whose work impacts upon the euthanasia debate namely, parliamentarians, law reform bodies, the judiciary and medical associations. My aim in adopting this approach is threefold. First of all, to examine evolving attitudes to death and dying in order to determine whether the institutions of law and medicine are responding in an adequate manner to changing sensibilities in the common law countries and in the Netherlands. Secondly, to highlight shifting balances of power within the euthanasia debate. Thirdly, to assess whether the various options for reform that I discuss are workable or not. In this thesis I show that there appears to be a sensibility of support in the common law countries for euthanasia to be legally available when an adult is terminally ill, is experiencing pain that he or she cannot bear and has expressed a wish to die (the typical euthanasia scenario). However, the situation is far from clear cut. The methods adopted by one of the ways of measuring sensibilities, opinion polls, suggest that sensibilities may not always be well-informed. Further, attitudes within and between key groups are not uniform or settled. In the context of this unsettled state of affairs, I show that responses to changing sensibilities from law and medicine in the common law jurisdictions are far from satisfactory. So far as legal responses are concerned, case law outcomes in right to die applications suggest a lack of flexibility. Outcomes in prosecutions following active voluntary euthanasia or assisted suicide reveal a non-application of established legal principles and suggest that the courts do not focus, squarely, upon the real issues at stake in the euthanasia debate. Medical responses are similarly less than optimal due to a tendency to de-emphasise existential (emotional) pain which, research shows, is the prime motivating factor in requests to be assisted to die sooner. Responses to changing sensibilities to death and dying in the Netherlands are also unsatisfactory because of the disorganised manner in which euthanasia was legalised and because regulation is inadequate. I come to the conclusion that there are three ways in which we could possibly resolve these problems and increase the flexibility of responses to changing sensibilities toward death and dying. They are as follows: by legalising euthanasia; by permitting a defence of necessity; or, by liberalising the use of terminal sedation in end-of-life care. Of these three, I conclude, in light of shifting sensibilities and overall negative attitudes among key groups to euthanasia, that the last is the most appropriate option at the present time. In closing, I address some of the larger issues at stake in the euthanasia debate. In particular, I deal with the effect that changing sensibilities toward the process of dying have had upon human social life, leading to the problematic situation that Elias referred to as the ‘loneliness of the dying’.

When we listen closely, there is a pervading sense that we could hear more if we could only focus a little more intently. Our own perceptual limits are a moving target that we cannot delineate and rarely reach. This dissertation introduces technologies that operate at that mysterious boundary. I envision sensor(y) landscapes, physical sites that meld distributed sensing and sensory perception to afford new perceptual sensibilities. Today's mainstream technologies are well designed for rapid consumption of information and linear, sequential action. A side effect of their effectiveness to task, however, is a loss of undirected, curiosity-driven exploration in the world. I propose alternative technologies that would extend perceptual presence, amplify attention, and leverage intuitions. My focus is on turning rich sensor data into compelling sensory input, and as such, a substantial component of my work involved deploying sensor infrastructure in beautiful places. My projects center on a wetland restoration site, called Tidmarsh, where environmental data are densely and continuously collected and streamed. Using sound and vibration as the medium and nature as the setting, I undertook this work in two steps. The first constructs environments suffused with sensing and built for being present in. My projects in this space comprise sensor-driven virtual worlds, glass elevator sound installations, and vibrating forests that give oral histories. Building on lessons and infrastructure from the first approach, my culminating work uses non-occluding spatial audio to create situated perceptions of data. I developed a bone-conduction headphone device, called HearThere, that renders a live soundscape from distributed microphones and sensors, fully merged with the user's natural hearing. HearThere combines its wearer's inferred listening state with classification output from an Al engine to adjust the mix and spatial parameters of virtual audio sources. The device was developed based on findings from lab studies into spatial hearing and attention, and evaluated in a human subjects study with a panel of experts. Through these projects, I found that deriving meaning in the medium is a matter of possessing or developing perceptual sensibilities, intuitions for how the permeated data can be teased out and contemplated. Carefully composed perceptual confusion-a blurring of place and distributed media-becomes an opportunity for the development of new transpresence sensibilities. How do users make sense of these new dimensions of perception, and how can technologies be designed to facilitate perceptual sense-making?

This project investigates the indie-folk music scene, characterised by lo-fi and vintage sensibilities evoking the Western colonial 'frontier spirit'—marked by old-timey handmade aesthetics, acoustic instruments and a back-to-basics ethos. Beginning as a niche genre then exploding into mainstream awareness in the 2000s, its popularity grew alongside cultural trends for all things natural, eco-friendly and 'rootsy'. Through interviews with artists, industry practitioners and fans, this research reveals the complexities involved in vintage sensibilities existing in a digitally-connected modern world, and how they relate to authenticity, hipster culture, green consumerism, gender, race and class.

The real world is not a computer screen. When can augmented reality and ambient interfaces improve the usability of a physical environment? This thesis presents data from design studies and experiments that demonstrate the value for ambient information and augmented reality design. The domestic kitchen is used as a domain to place smart technologies and to study visual attention,multi-tasking, food-preparation and disruptiveness. Human perception in visually complex environments can be significantly enhanced by overlaying intuitive, immersive and attentive displays. Placing Graphical User Interface designs in a physical environment made only 20% of the subjects understand what to do in the Soft-Boiled Egg experiment. In the stovetop study, 94% of the subjects understood that the augmented stovetop was still hot and dangerous through the abstract and immersive display, while only 19% of the subjects were able to determine that the normal stovetop was still hot from a distance. In the Sink study, 94% of the subjects immediately understood that the water was hot by its red color. Useful knowledge about cooking, safety, and using home appliances can be embedded with sensors into the physical environment.

This thesis gives a cultural and philosophical account of the meaning of music through the analysis of romantic film music as it underscores dramatic, narrative film. The argument is furnished by thinkers and poets of the Romantic revolution in thought, language and sensibility that took place at the end of the eighteenth century and into the first third of the nineteenth century. The main claim is that romantic orchestral music is particularly suited, and has become ubiquitous as a standard, for expressing the darkness of the human heart; exhilarated and awed by the thrills and terrors of the sublime; elated and tortured by its pleasures and pains; recognizing that even happiness, pleasure and love are underwritten by the dark reality of our divided selves engaging a world riven by contradictions. Schiller’s conception of das Musikalische, as a pre-conceptual reflection of the importance of music, provides a potent starting point for this argument. The ability of music to express a characteristic darkness, which finds its way into romantic orchestral film music, is enlisted precisely because only it can express such darkness in consonance with the existential and chiaroscuro darkness of film and cinematic experience as a spectacle of the sublime. Chapter one cites some examples of symphonic orchestral film music in order to locate the style of music to be discussed. Chapter two presents a philosophical argument that justifies the main claims of the thesis. Chapter three presents a concise historical account, connecting the dark sublime of romantic literary practice with the evolution of dark themes in popular entertainment, leading eventually to the films of Hollywood’s Golden Era. Chapter four connects the mythological programme of Wagner’s conception of music drama with the New Mythology of the Romantics, and demonstrates how this programme came to influence symphonic film music. Chapters five and six give a musical and filmic analysis that illustrates the claims made throughout the thesis. Chapter five examines an instance of music composed in the late-romantic period being applied to a film. Chapter six gives a detailed analysis of two films that demonstrate abundantly the application of a dark sublime aesthetic to cinematic experience through the use of symphonic orchestral film music, and extends the insights gained to other, illustrative examples.

This dissertation questions how it is possible for a child to be considered the dramaturg of a theatrical production specifically catering for early year audiences. The research begins with an investigation of secondary source materials to obtain a working definition of the concepts of child/hood and dramaturg/y in relation to how other artists and art forms have used and presented work to children. The research then incorporates the use of interviews held with professionally trained theatre practitioners involved in producing and promoting Theatre for Early Years (TEY), in order to contextualise the theatre scene for early years in South Africa at present. The majority of the research is then dedicated to analysing, through my own artistic practice, the means by which children participated in the process of developing a TEY production in 2015. Whereby dramaturgy is understood to be a political practice that addresses the inequality of power relations between the audience and the performance, the main outcome of the dissertation addresses the value of including the child as a dramaturg/quasi-dramaturg in the practice of devising theatre for young audiences.

This is a dissertation about care. Based on over ten years of experience with Southeast Asia and sixteen months of ethnographic research for this project, I address the issue of caregiving primarily from the perspective of those providing care at home for elderly people in urban Northern Thailand and from the vantage point of national and international public health initiatives aimed at supporting such endeavors. In turn, I use the intimate experiences of caregivers to interrogate the politics of aging, long-term care, and national identity. What emerges is an understanding of caregiving different from that of liberal humanitarianism and biomedicine alike. With a focus on social relationships and embodied care practices, I show how forms of attention, obligation, giving, and receiving in urban Thai settings do not always equate with their counterparts in standard global health accounts. Instead, local values are put into action with significant ramifications for the performance and promotion of care. I examine local and global techniques of power and care embedded in the growing number of volunteer organizations directed at the elderly. With attention to class, religion, and history, I trace the interpersonal, social, and political influences reflected in caregiver subjectivity and propose a distinctly Thai logic of psychosocial support that underlies the experience of the caregivers and aid workers with whom I worked. Examining family dynamics and the stories people tell about the future, I trace a new imaginary for long-term care at play, apparent at both the individual and the institutional level. And I develop the concept of the "social body," arguing that attention to and care of the collective is crucial for making sense not only of the disorienting varieties of volunteerism marking the shifting ground of long-term and end-of-life care in Thailand, but also of the larger scale political upheavals afoot in that country today.

The American and British have actively traveled to Italy since the late 17th century. The Grand Tours popularized by the British Upper Class in the 18th Century were fictionalized by many authors and led to a fascination with Italian culture. The novels that emerged about this country by authors such as E.M. Forster, Henry James and D.H. Lawrence focused on characters that were often hesitant to explore Italian culture. Three particular archetypes stand out in their writing: the corrupted foreigner, the female foreigner and the rare culturally engaged foreigner. This study explores each of these archetypes and their specific influence on this canon of literature. These works are still relevant to modern society and the continued difficulty of understanding people unlike ourselves.

When SlutWalk marched onto the protest scene, with its focus on ending victim blaming and slut shaming, it carried the promise of a renewed feminist politics. Focusing on SlutWalk London, this study examines representations and selfrepresentations of the protest in British national newspapers, blogs and Tumblr posts to explore how this promise has been negotiated in the contemporary media space. Building on the notion that contemporary media culture is characterised by a postfeminist sensibility, this study asks: how and to what extent is SlutWalk London represented as a feminist intervention in this culture? In particular, how do representations of the protest, by the media and by activists themselves, reproduce or challenge a postfeminist sensibility? Following Rosalind Gill, the thesis conceptualises the elements of postfeminist sensibility as: choice; individualism and empowerment; natural difference; irony and knowingness; and a view of feminism as passé or ‘done wrong’. The elements of feminist sensibility are conceptualised as: equality; solidarity and politicisation; intersectionality; anger and hope; and a view of feminism as current and relevant. To explore representations and self-representations of SlutWalk, texts and images from newspapers and social media platforms, as well as interviews with organisers and participants, are analysed using content, discourse and thematic analyses. The findings reveal that protestors’ self-representations (on social media and in interviews) are characterised more consistently by a feminist sensibility, while newspaper representations of protestors and of the SlutWalk protest display a more mixed picture of both postfeminist and feminist sensibilities. This indicates a process of negotiation between feminist and postfeminist sensibilities in social and mass media, and suggests that, while contemporary media culture maintains an overall postfeminist sensibility, SlutWalk is nevertheless represented in some spaces by a feminist sensibility. In particular, news items are characterised more consistently by a feminist sensibility, which marks a significant achievement; however, columns (especially by female, feminist authors) show a more postfeminist sensibility. This discrepancy highlights some surprising barriers facing feminist protestors seeking to intervene in the postfeminist media culture and fulfil their feminist promise.

This thesis challenges a number of claims that are made in the context of the euthanasia debate: that there is only one version of the good death; that rights discourse is the most appropriate vehicle by which to secure legal recognition of a right to die; that the Netherlands is either a model for reform or the epitome of a slippery slope in its regulation of euthanasia; and that a key argument in the euthanasia debate, the sanctity of life doctrine, is a fixed, immutable concept. In this thesis I use process sociology, developed by Norbert Elias, in order to capture changing sensibilities toward death and dying in the common law jurisdictions (Australia, England, the United States of America, Canada and New Zealand) and in the Netherlands. At the same time I analyse changing attitudes among key groups whose work impacts upon the euthanasia debate namely, parliamentarians, law reform bodies, the judiciary and medical associations. My aim in adopting this approach is threefold. First of all, to examine evolving attitudes to death and dying in order to determine whether the institutions of law and medicine are responding in an adequate manner to changing sensibilities in the common law countries and in the Netherlands. Secondly, to highlight shifting balances of power within the euthanasia debate. Thirdly, to assess whether the various options for reform that I discuss are workable or not. In this thesis I show that there appears to be a sensibility of support in the common law countries for euthanasia to be legally available when an adult is terminally ill, is experiencing pain that he or she cannot bear and has expressed a wish to die (the typical euthanasia scenario). However, the situation is far from clear cut. The methods adopted by one of the ways of measuring sensibilities, opinion polls, suggest that sensibilities may not always be well-informed. Further, attitudes within and between key groups are not uniform or settled. In the context of this unsettled state of affairs, I show that responses to changing sensibilities from law and medicine in the common law jurisdictions are far from satisfactory. So far as legal responses are concerned, case law outcomes in right to die applications suggest a lack of flexibility. Outcomes in prosecutions following active voluntary euthanasia or assisted suicide reveal a non-application of established legal principles and suggest that the courts do not focus, squarely, upon the real issues at stake in the euthanasia debate. Medical responses are similarly less than optimal due to a tendency to de-emphasise existential (emotional) pain which, research shows, is the prime motivating factor in requests to be assisted to die sooner. Responses to changing sensibilities to death and dying in the Netherlands are also unsatisfactory because of the disorganised manner in which euthanasia was legalised and because regulation is inadequate. I come to the conclusion that there are three ways in which we could possibly resolve these problems and increase the flexibility of responses to changing sensibilities toward death and dying. They are as follows: by legalising euthanasia; by permitting a defence of necessity; or, by liberalising the use of terminal sedation in end-of-life care. Of these three, I conclude, in light of shifting sensibilities and overall negative attitudes among key groups to euthanasia, that the last is the most appropriate option at the present time. In closing, I address some of the larger issues at stake in the euthanasia debate. In particular, I deal with the effect that changing sensibilities toward the process of dying have had upon human social life, leading to the problematic situation that Elias referred to as the ‘loneliness of the dying’.

Resumo: Este projeto tem como tema principal a relação entre o processo de urbanização e de industrialização na cidade de Vinhedo e a educação das sensibilidades dos sujeitos envolvidos. O recorte temporal focalizado para a pesquisa é o período de 1970 a 1990, uma vez que é neste momento que Vinhedo intensifica o avanço do sistema capitalista amalgamando em sua paisagem imagens tradicionais e modernas. No entanto, o ponto de partida e de chegada da pesquisa é o tempo presente: é a partir dele, que as relações com o passado são tecidas. A fim de investigar como estas "novas" práticas sociais instituíram uma "nova" educação urbana das sensibilidades e de perceber como as "novas" experiências socioculturais urbanas foram transformadas (pelas) e, ao mesmo tempo incorporadas nas práticas sociais e escolares, fez-se necessária a realização de entrevistas com antigos moradores e com ex-professores (os quais estavam inseridos nas instituições públicas do período focalizado). Ainda, com o intuito de perceber como os sujeitos se relacionavam com a cidade, privilegiei a análise de outros documentos, como fotos da paisagem urbana, jornais da época e textos literários
Abstract: This project has as main theme the relationship between the process of urbanization and industrialization of the Vinhedo¿s city and the education of the sensibilities of the subjects involved. The timeframe for the focused research is the period from 1970 to 1990, since it is at this point Vinhedo intensifies the advancing capitalist system amalgamating in your landscape traditional and modern images. However, the starting and finishing point of the research is the present tense: it is from it that relations with the past are woven. In order to investigate how these "new" social practices instituted a "new" urban education of sensitivities and to understand how the "new" urban sociocultural experiences were transformed (by) and, at the same time incorporated in social and school practices, made necessary the realization of interviews with former residents and with former or current teachers (which were inserted into public institutions focused period). Still, in order to understand how the subjects related to the city, I choose to analyze other documents, such as images of the urban landscape, newspapers and literary texts

Pendant plusieurs décennies, des années 1950 jusqu’au début des années 2000, les nuits des ondes hertziennes françaises étaient peuplées de voix multiples, célèbres puis anonymes, souvent feutrées et confidentes. Ces voix s’accordaient à l’atmopshère de la nuit. Trouvant refuge dans cet espace-temps alternatif, elles profitaient de ces heures, situées en dehors du temps social majoritaire, pour s’exprimer. La radio nocturne constituait un espace de rêves et d’expérimentations, de rencontres et de dialogues, offrant aux auditeurs de la nuit un accompagnement, une fenêtre ouverte sur le monde, sur les autres et sur l’intime. Ce travail propose de retracer l’histoire de ces programmes des heures noires, à travers une approche chronologique de leur évolution. L’analyse des émissions est croisée avec celle de la réception, notamment permise par les courriers d’auditeurs, ainsi qu’avec l’observation des imaginaires véhiculés autour de l’objet «radio de nuit». Histoire des productions radiophoniques, des pratiques et des perceptions nocturnes, cette thèse entend mettre en lumière le monde des ondes de la nuit, distinguer les différentes phases de son développement, ainsi que ses spécificités. Situé au carrefour de l’histoire de la radio et de celle de la nuit, Micros de nuit se présente aussi comme une contribution à l’histoire des sensibilités du second vingtième siècle
During several decades, from the 1950’s until the beginning of the 2000’s, french night-time radio waves were filled with numerous voices, famous or anonymous, often muted and intimate. These voices matched well with the nocturnal atmosphere. Finding a refuge in this alternate space-time, they took advantage of these hours, located outside of the majority social time, to express theirselves. Night-time radio constituted a space for dreams and experimentations, meetings and dialogues, offering a support to night-time listeners, a window open to the rest of the world, the others and the intimacy. This study recounts the history of all-night french radio, throug a chronological approach, focusing on the broadcasts, their reception, as well as the imaginaries drifting around them. History of radio productions, nocturnal habits and perceptions, this thesis intend to highlight the wave night world, to distinguish its different phases and its key features. Located at the crossroad of radio history and night-time history, Micros de nuit constitutes also a contribution to an history of sensibilities for the second half of the 20th century

O principal objetivo desta pesquisa é tentar compreender algumas das motivações que, na metade do século passado, ainda orientavam as atividades de muitos grupos de intelectuais no interior do país. Assim, através da análise de um rico acervo epistolar acumulado entre 1948 e 1959 pelo Centro Cultural Euclides da Cunha, de Ponta Grossa (PR), o presente estudo procura desvendar a empolgação característica que cercava as atividades do grupo intelectual ali reunido. Ao se examinar hoje os indícios e vestígios encontrados nessa documentação, é possível perceber, por exemplo, a existência de um apego muito grande às lides científicoliterárias e ao trabalho intelectual diletante. Na mais remota das hipóteses e sem a menor dúvida, tais motivos devem ter ocupado tempo e espaço consideráveis nas vidas destas pessoas, devem ter mobilizado suas existências e, desse modo, forjado em grande parte suas identidades. Em última análise, estas questões devem ter tido um significado que agora irremediavelmente nos escapa. Tendo isso em vista, a proposta deste trabalho é tentar reconstruir este significado nos pormenores de suas dimensões social, conceitual e subjetiva, lançando mão para tanto de alguns conceitos e apontamentos enfeixados pela história cultural
The aim of this research is to understand some reasons which have guided the activities of many intellectuals groups in Brazil’s half of twentieth century. Then, through analysis of the epistolary rich collection amassed between 1948-1959 by the Centro Cultural Euclides da Cunha, of Ponta Grossa, Paraná, Brazil, this study tries to uncover the great excitement that surrounded the activities of the intellectual group gathered there. By examining these documents it is possible to realize the existence of a very large devotion to scientific, literary and intellectual works. Undoubtedly, those reasons must have occupied considerable time and space in the lives of these people, should have mobilized their existence and thus largely forged their identities. Keeping this in view, the purpose of this work is to try to reconstruct this meaning in its social, conceptual and subjective details, using for that some cultural history methodological guidelines

This thesis aims to discuss, through the memories and the sensibilities, some of the life experiences of people who lived in the city of Cubati, located at the interior of the state of Paraiba during the 1950s until 1980. In this period, occurred in this city the change of agricultural production based on food cultivation for subsistence to a production process and large-scale commercialization of agave, wich was destinated for the domestic and foreign markets. In this city, the process of economic exploitation of agave resulted in some changes on the lifes of the people, changes on their everyday life and working practices. Through political and religious speeches, we realize that the agave was seen as the main route for the salvation of the brazilian Northeast, a region hit by the drought and focus of different public policies. In this sense, political, religious, agronomists and journalists took turns on the production of speeches in defense of the agave, for which attributed an evil and destructive aspect. Through analysis of these discourses (BENJAMIN, 2012) I sought to identify how they were important for the acceptance of agave in Cubati, and also, how they were used for positivization of this type of agriculture. This study has not the objective to privilege the visions created by the elitist groups about the agricultural production of the agave. For the contrary, I intend to identify, through narratives and the sensibilities produced by oral speech, how the process of the exploration of the agave changed the lifes of the workers who lived in this city. After analize the oral sources, I propoused some questions wich could reveal to me the senses, the objectives of these senses and the objectives of the sequences of remembrance of the people who were interviewed. With regard to the work with the oral sources, I used the Oral History Metodology (FERREIRA, 1998), because I realize that it would be the best manner to comprehend the visions of the farmers about the introduction of the agave as a new agricultural product and how it was the manner of work with that strange plant. When we think on the relashionship between the speeches and its various forms of actuation, I based myself in Michel Foucault (1972; 2012), because this philosopher showed us that the speeches are passed by a knowledge-power relation wich start from a particular place/institution playing a role in social, cultural and political relations. Foucault inspired me to think the manner how the workers were related to their memories, and how, when they remembered, exercised the "author function". It was also important to think the relations of the workers with the working world from the look of English historiography, notably through (THOMPSON, 1981; 1997; 1998) realized that the agave‟s workers from Cubati and their memories are inscribed in this study through a poetic, that do not intend to tell just one story. This story is told through the various voices that make up this text.
Esta dissertação pretende discutir, através das memórias e sensibilidades, algumas das experiências vividas pelos sujeitos da cidade de Cubati, interior da Paraíba, durante as décadas de 1950 e 1980. Nesse período, ocorreu neste município, a alteração da produção agrícola baseada no cultivo de alimentos para a subsistência para um processo de produção e comercialização em grande escala de agave, o qual era destinado ao mercado interno e externo. Nessa cidade, o processo de exploração econômica do agave resultou na alteração das vidas dos sujeitos, nas mudanças dos seus costumes e na alteração de suas práticas de trabalho. Através de discursos de políticos e religiosos, percebemos que o agave passou a ser visto como a principal via para a salvação do Nordeste, região esta assolada pela seca e foco de diferentes políticas públicas. Nesse sentido, políticos, religiosos, agrônomos e jornalistas revezaram-se na produção de discursos em defesa do agave, para o qual atribuíam um aspecto diabólico e destrutivo. Através de análises à contra-pêlo desses discursos (BENJAMIN, 2012) procurei identificar como eles foram importantes para a aceitação do agave em terras cubatienses, e também, como foram utilizados a positivação desse tipo de agricultura. Este estudo não tem como objetivo privilegiar as visões produzidas pelas elites sobre o agave. Ao contrário disso, busco identificar, através das narrativas e das sensibilidades produzidas por depoimentos orais, como o processo de exploração do agave alterou a vida dos trabalhadores que viveram nesta cidade. Ao analisar as fontes orais, propus indagações que pudessem me revelar os sentidos e os objetivos das sequências de rememoração das pessoas entrevistadas. No que se refere ao trabalho com as fontes orais, trabalhei com a metodologia da História Oral (FERREIRA, 1998), pois percebi que ela seria a única maneira de compreender o olhar dos agricultores sobre a introdução do agave como novo produto agrícola e como era o processo de trabalho com aquela planta estranha. Ao pensar a relação entre os discursos e suas múltiplas formas de atuação me baseio em Michel Foucault (1972; 2012), esse filósofo nos mostra que os discursos são perpassados por uma relação de saber-poder, os quais partem de um determinado lugar/instituição exercendo um papel nas relações sociais, culturais e politicas. Foucault, ainda me inspirou a pensar a maneira como os trabalhadores se relacionavam com suas memórias, como, ao rememorarem exerciam a “função de autor”. Foi importante pensar a relação dos trabalhadores com o mundo do trabalho a partir do olhar da historiografia inglesa, (THOMPSON, 1981; 1997; 1998) percebi que os trabalhadores do agave de Cubati e suas memórias estão inscritos neste trabalho através de uma poética, que não pretende contar uma só história, mas que se conta através das várias vozes, que compõem esse texto.

This PhD examines the re-emergence of shamanic sensibilities amongst the Russian avant-garde in the period 1900-1933, focusing on the artists Larionov, Goncharova, Malevich, Filonov and Kandinsky. It considers how these pioneering artists, having anticipated Jung’s crisis of psychic dislocation, were perhaps inspired by the ideology, iconography, ritualistic practice and mystical symbolism inherent in shamanism and other associated phenomena. Shamanism was chosen as the theme as it was Jung’s quintessential metaphor for the process towards psychic reunification. The thesis analyses how the artists utilised parallel conceptions in their work in order to attempt to bring about the reunification of the consciousness, both on a visual level in their pictorial imagery, and on a more subtle level through referencing psychological or philosophical principles which may lead to the manifestation of an experience arguably similar to those common in the practice of ‘primitive’ cultures. The thesis attempts to take the reader on a metaphorical shamanic journey, through focusing on four aspects which parallel those found in shamanic practice in the stages that they occur to the neophyte. Firstly, it considers the concept of dvoeverie, a painterly principle relying on the conflation of pagan and religious imagery, and how its artistic expression might equate to Jungian archetypal expression. Secondly, it discusses how the avant-garde re-defined the role of the artist so that the artistic figure might parallel Jung’s metaphorical shaman, and how they began assuming an archetypal role. Thirdly, it examines how these artists began to express a sense of escapism, in an attempt to express Jungian collective archetypes metaphorically expressed in the ‘soul-journey’, through referencing ecstatic and mystical practises frequently utilised to facilitate ritual, through creating a sense of transcendent voyage, and through visually attempting to express the experience of cosmic noumena. Finally, the journey culminates in the examination of how the avant-garde adopted the ultimate Jungian telos of cosmic psychic healing. Throughout this discussion, the thesis attempts to understand why these artists might have been inspired by shamanic and mystical philosophies, through interpreting their practise using a Jungian framework, arguing that it was the artists’ perception of Jung’s crisis of psychic dislocation that inspired the re-emergence of shamanic sensibilities to provide a visual metaphor for the expression of their overall social and ameliorative aims.

Resumo: Este trabalho de pesquisa detém-se sobre a temática da morte na contemporaneidade, enfocando diferentes imagens, sobretudo literárias, sob a ótica historiográfico-educacional. A escolha do tema justifica-se pela ainda reduzida atenção que a morte vem recebendo por parte dos trabalhos acadêmicos, nas áreas historiográfica e educacional, pelo avanço da modernidade capitalista, que contribui para a diluição do tema. O trabalho é constituído, principalmente, com base no diálogo com os referenciais teóricos de Walter Benjamin e Norbert Elias, tendo em conta que ambos têm produções concernentes à história cultural. Dentre as questões trabalhadas, destaca-se o significado da morte na contemporaneidade e seu ocultamento, ocasionando o sofrimento e isolamento dos moribundos. A retomada da narrativa das memórias com velhos, doentes e moribundos é apontada como elemento valioso nesse momento da vida, em que muitos sentem que não possuem mais significado para os outros. A escola também pode beneficiar-se da retomada da narrativa, e da consciência do limite que a morte nos impõe, instigando os atores desse espaço a se posicionarem e a agirem no momento presente. Foi tomado para análise o texto ¿A morte de Natália¿, de Silvio Fiorani; tal análise fundamentou-se no aportes teóricometodológicos dos filósofos supracitados. O caráter cômico da obra de Fiorani permitiu, dentre outras possibilidades, tocar na temática da morte de forma mais leve, o que vai de encontro à forma como é percebida pelas pessoas em nossos dias
Abstract: This work has the search on the topic of death in contemporary, focussing different images, especially literary, from the historical and educational perspectives. The theme choice is justified by the limited attention that the death has received from university works, in historiographic and education fields, due to the modern capitalist advancement, which contributes to the weakening of the theme. The work consists mainly, based on dialogue with the theoretical benchmarks of Walter Benjamin and Norbert Elias, given that both have productions concerning the cultural history. Among the issues, was the meaning of death in contemporary and her concealing, causing isolation in the dying and suffering people. The narrative resumption with the old people, sick and dying memories are identified as valuable element on this life time, when many of them feel that do not have meaning for the others. The school can also get benefits from the narrative resumption, and the limits awareness that the death imposes to us, prompting the actors of that space to position and to act at this time. The text reviewed for this analysis was ¿A morte de Natália¿, by Silvio Fiorani; this analysis was based on theoretical and methodological contributions of philosophers above. The comic character of the Fiorani work allows, among other issues, touch on the death subject in a light way, which goes against the way how the death is understood by the people in current days

Abstract: The aim of this research is to understand some reasons which have guided the activities of many intellectuals groups in Brazil's half of twentieth century. Then, through analysis of the epistolary rich collection amassed between 1948-1959 by the Centro Cultural Euclides da Cunha, of Ponta Grossa, Paraná, Brazil, this study tries to uncover the great excitement that surrounded the activities of the intellectual group gathered there. By examining these documents it is possible to realize the existence of a very large devotion to scientific, literary and intellectual works. Undoubtedly, those reasons must have occupied considerable time and space in the lives of these people, should have mobilized their existence and thus largely forged their identities. Keeping this in view, the purpose of this work is to try to reconstruct this meaning in its social, conceptual and subjective details, using for that some cultural history methodological guidelines

Esta dissertação presta-se a oferecer considerações para um adensamento do quadro teórico que fomenta debates contemporâneos sobre formação docente para o ensino de inglês no Brasil, aprofundando-se na questão do jogo identidade/ alteridade, uma vez que considera que a presença das línguas estrangeiras na Educação Básica deve atender à necessidade atual de nossa sociedade de repensar temas tais como os efeitos da globalização sobre práticas interculturais. Recorrendo ao campo da Arte como fonte conceitual, o trabalho faz uma leitura de teorias do Teatro Pós-Dramático para tentar compreender quais são as precondições, no âmbito da construção da subjetividade através de aprendizagem pela técnica teatral, à efetivação de uma capacidade de deslocamento crítico do ser entre modelos de produção de conhecimento que, dentro do pensamento dualista pós-industrial, repelem-se mutualmente. Por meio de estudo bibliográfico, toma-se a união psicofísica como canal transversal para uma abordagem do percurso das forças afetivas sobre o ator e sua atuação, expandindo-se a problematização da relação do indivíduo com os procedimentos e técnicas do poder, ao se explorarem as formas pelas quais o emprego de diferentes sensibilidades impacta na constituição de espaços dissensuais de coexistência entre múltiplos paradigmas políticos.
This thesis looks into the question of identity/alterity with an aim to provide considerations that can broaden the theoretical framework currently fostering debates about teacher education for the teaching of English in Brazil, since it considers that the presence of foreign languages in formal education must meet the present need of our society to rethink topics such as the effects of globalization on intercultural practices. Through the use of Art as a conceptual source, the project proposes an interpretation of Post-Dramatic Theater theories within the scope of the construction of subjectivity through learning promoted by theatrical technique, in order to try and understand the preconditions to the accomplishment of a capacity for critical ontological movement between models of knowledge production that repel each other, according to dualist post-industrial thinking. By means of a bibliographical study, the psychophysical union is taken as a transversal channel for an approach to the trajectory of affective forces on the actor and his performance, expanding the problematization of the relation of the individual with the procedures and techniques of power, while exploring the manner in which the use of different sensibilities impacts on the constitution of dissensual spaces of coexistence between multiple political paradigms.

Esta pesquisa é um estudo etnográfico que trata do relacionamento entre humanos e animais tendo como foco analítico as mudanças de atitudes em relação aos animais, de uma forma geral, e dos abandonados, de uma forma particular. A partir do contexto de Porto Alegre/RS, esta investigação busca, especificamente, acessar os distintos códigos morais e as diferentes sensibilidades envolvidas na relação humanos-animais, bem como as transformações acerca da responsabilidade humana sobre os animais e no tratamento dispensado a eles. A atuação de ONGs no acolhimento de animais abandonados e na organização de feiras de adoção, revela novas modalidades de militância. A “ajuda animalitária”, designação escolhida para definir este tipo de envolvimento com a “causa animal”, tem gerado embates discursivos em torno do estatuto dos animais – seguidamente contra a mercadorização e o uso utilitário -, com desdobramentos até mesmo na forma como o Estado tem lidado com tais questões.
This is an ethnographic study of the relationship between humans and animals in the Brazilian city of Porto Alegre. In this study, general changes in attitude towards animals as well as more specific concerns regarding animal abandonment were analyzed. This investigation sought to identify the distinct moral codes and sensibilities involved in human-animal relations; moreover, transformations in expectations relative to human responsibility towards animals and their treatment were likewise observed. It was also noted that new modalities of militancy revealed themselves in the activities of local NGOs which shelter abandoned animals and organize pet adoption fairs. Ajuda animalitária, or “animal rescue” is the preferred designation for this type of commitment to the „animal cause‟, a term which has generated discursive confrontation in debates touching on the statute of animals. In turn, the effects of this militancy - which is frequently against animal merchandizing and the utilitarian use of animals – unfold in society to such an extent that they even influence how the State has come to deal with these issues.

The historical archive dealing with the shipwreck of the Stirling Castle, and the subsequent experiences of its survivors, is a site that has been contested and re-contested by a multiplicity of readings since its inception. The myths that were generated by the accounts of Mrs Eliza Fraser’s shipwreck on what came to be known as Fraser Island helped to create a stereotype of the Aboriginal ‘other’ as ‘savage cannibals’. Cannibal discourse is located within a particular genre of colonial fantasy that differentiates the colonial citizen from savagery and violence. Europeans suspected cannibalism wherever they went, and this was fuelled by missionary tales of horror and pagan excess of the savage places beyond the borders of civilisation. The paranoid ethos associated with cannibalism finds its expression in the dark fantasies of gothic novels of the late Romantic period. This thesis and its accompanying studio work demonstrates that the nineteenth-century narratives surrounding the shipwreck and subsequent ‘capture’ of Eliza Fraser off the coast of Queensland were constructed using the literary conventions of the gothic novel. Employing a polylogic epistolary style in the manner of Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus, the studio work seeks to re-position Eliza Fraser within the horror of her ordeal and provides a re-interpretation of events.

Resumo: Esse trabalho propõe-se a estudar os sites de arquivos públicos, em seus diálogos com práticas de memória, de ensino de História e de educação das sensibilidades na contemporaneidade. Para tal, elege como fontes os próprios sites de arquivos, bem como a literatura recente produzida por arquivistas e pesquisadores de ensino de História, referente às relações entre arquivos e educação. Esses dois conjuntos de fontes, ao serem entrecruzados, fazem emergir um uma rede de discursos e práticas que se articulam, internacionalmente, como tendências prevalecentes, na literatura e nas práticas recentes dessa área em que se configuram as aproximações entre arquivos e educação. O referencial bibliográfico, no trabalho de articular a multidisciplinaridade dos campos estudados às possibilidades de diálogo dos autores em seus enfoques teóricos e metodológicos, foi eleito tendo em vista entrecruzar os diferentes autores das áreas da arquivística, da história cultural e da educação, em algumas de suas aproximações e confrontos, a partir de questões elaboradas nos sucessivos diálogos com as fontes. As relações entre arquivos e educação são pensadas a partir da ótica da educação patrimonial, do ensino de História, da produção de conhecimentos históricos educacionais e da educação das sensibilidades. Nesses movimentos reflexivos, o trabalho revê alguns pressupostos das tendências prevalecentes na literatura e práticas das ações educativas nos arquivos online, localizando esses projetos no tempo e no espaço. Como horizonte, propõe-se a ampliar as possibilidades de experiências de educação em arquivos que estimulem leituras plurais e inventivas de seus registros, na relação com suas reproduções digitais, cujos conjuntos vêm sendo publicados nos sites de arquivos públicos e divulgados nas mídias contemporâneas.
Abstract: This thesis aims to study public archives websites, in their dialogues with memory practices, History teaching and education of sensibilities. To do so, it has elected these websites as sources for research, as well as recent literature produced by archivists and History teaching researchers on the subject of relationships between archives and education. These two sets of sources pointed to a network of discourses and practices internationally articulated, as recent prevailing trends in literature and practices on the interactions between archives and education. The bibliographic references were elected to articulate archivistics, cultural history and education fields, in some of its approaches and confrontations, based on questions raised by the sources. As a result, the relationships between education and archives are viewed through the optics of heritage education, History teaching, educative research on historical themes, and also as contemporary forms of education of sensibilities. In these movements, the thesis reviews some assumptions of prevailing trends in literature and recent practices of educational activities on archives websites, their methodological perspectives and historical trends. As horizon, it aims to enlarge the technological and educatives possibilities of experiences on archives that stimulate inventive readings of records, through their digital reproductions, whose collections have been published on the websites of public archives and spread in contemporary media.

La these s articule autour de quatre chapitres, tous dedies a l etude des taux d interet. Le premier chapitre integre l equilibre general de cox, ingersoll et ross (1985) au sein des theories economiques de la structure par terme. Le second chapitre reprend les principales contributions a l etude des taux et les discute, en s interessant particulierement aux modeles non lineaires. Nous resolvons le modele de beaglehole et tenney (1992) lorsqu une condition de reflexion lui est ajoutee et nous mettons en evidence l existence d une contrainte dans le processus double racine carree introduit par longstaff (1992). Nous proposons egalement une solutions analytique originale au probleme de la determination des taux de rendement, non lineaire en deux variables d etat : le taux d interet instantane et sa volatilite. Le chapitre trois propose une etude comparative de quatre modeles, dont celui developpe dans cette these, a partir de taux u. S. Sur la periode 1991-1992. Nos tests concluent a un rejet massif des differentes formulations, sur base de l echantillon retenu. Le quatrieme chapitre suggere deux mesures de risque, adaptees aux modeles bivaries taux-volatilite. Une immunisation obligataire, sur base des durations stochastiques introduites est finalement ebauchee
This thesis is divided in four chapters : all are dedicated to the important subject of interest rates. The first chapter shows that the general equilibrium framework of cox, ingersoll and ross (1985) is a valid economic theory of the term structure. The second chapter presents some particularizations of general equilibrium models, with a particular attention for nonlinear ones. We solved the beaglehole and tenney (1992) model with an additional reflecting boundary and we exhibit a constraint between the parameters of the double square root process introduced by longstaff (1992). Furthermoren we propose an original analytical solution for discount bond yields-to-manturity. This new formula is a nonlinear function of two state varables : the short-term rate and its volatility. In chapter three, we perform a large comarison of interest rate models, using u. S. Interest rate data from the period 1991-1992. All the specifications are strongly rejected by our sample. Chapter four propose two measure of basis risk, suited to bivariate models. We give the outline to immunisation of riskless bonds in general equilibrium models

Ce travail se propose d'etudier la notion de "sensible" en remontant d'abord a l'oeuvre de husserl, le fondateur de la phenomenologie, et en abordant ensuite l'interpretation ontologique et esthetique dans l'oeuvre de merleau-ponty et dans celle de dufrenne. C'est essentiellement une recherche des limites du sensible. Nous la divisons en trois parties. Dans la premiere partie, nous reflechissons sur la "reduction phenomenologique" et ses significations dans la definition husserlienne du sensible. La reduction phenomenologique est a la fois de "depassement" et la "conservation" de l'attitude naturelle. Et c'est dans cette bilateralite de la reduction phenomenologique que se realise la constitution du "monde de la vie" et que s'approfondit la signification de la notion de sensible. Dans la deuxieme partie, nous nous engageons dans la "rehabilitation ontologique" du sensible qu'entreprend merleau-ponty et que reprend dufrenne. Cette rehabilitation nous invite a concevoir le sensible a partir de l'experience corporelle et nous permet de revenir a la familiarite primordiale du corps et du monde ou le sensible se comprend comme "couche originaire" anterieure a la division des sens. C'est en ce sens que le sensible prepare le chemin au monde primordial ou est nee l'oeuvre d'art. Dans la troisieme partie, nous nous attachons a expliquer le "tournant esthetique" qui caracterise la phenomenologie francaise. Nous soulignons que ce n'est pas l'esthetique qui se sert de la phenomenologie, mais qu'au contraire, c'est la phenomenologie qui s'approfondit dans l'esthetique. La lecture de dufrenne nous permet de dire que le monde de l'oeuvre d'art est un terrain sur lequel se realise le but que la phenomenologie veut atteindre. Cette recherche des limites du sensible se termine donc dans une ontologie phenomenologique de l'oeuvre d'art
This thesis proposes to study the concept of the "sensible", tracing first of all back to the works of husserl, the founder of phenomenology, and then analyzing the ontological and aesthetical interpretation in the works of merleau-ponty and those of dufrenne. This research is mainly an investigation of the limits of the "sensible". This thesis is divided into three parts. In the first part, we study the "phenomenological reduction" and its significances in the husserlian definition of the "sensible". The phenomenological reduction is at the same time the "transcendence" and the "conservation" of the natural attitude. And it is in this bilaterality of the phenomenological reduction that the constitution of the "life-world" is made possible and the significance of the concept of the "sensible" deepened. In the second part, we engage in the "ontological rehabilitation of the sensible" undertaken by merleau-ponty and dufrenne respectively. This rehabilitation invites us to conceive the "sensible" from corporal experience and allows us to return to the primordial familiarity of the body and the world where the "sensible" can be comprehended as the "couche originaire" before the division of the senses. It is in this sense that the "sensible" leads us to the primordial world in which the work of art was first born. In the last part, we devote ourselves to the explication of the "aesthetical turn" which charasterizes french phenomenology. We emphasize that it is not aesthetics that makes use of phenomenology, but, on the contrary, it is aesthetics that makes phenomenology more profound. The reading of dufrenne permit us to say that the world of art is a territory on which the goal of phenomenology can be reached. This research on the limits of the "sensible" thus ends with a phenomenological ontology of the work of art

Cette evolution peut etre determinee par l'analyse en sensibilites de ce circuit. Les sensibilites d'ordre 1 n'aboutissent pas a une caracterisation complete des tolerances du circuit. Il est necessaire de calculer les sensibilites d'ordres superieurs pour prevoir le comportement de la reponse. Ces sensibilites d'ordres superieurs permettent d'approcher correctement la performance etudiee par un polynome fonction des differentes variations des elements. Un algorithme de calcul de toutes les sensibilites d'ordre quelconque a ete etabli. A partir de ces resultats, il est possible d'estimer les tolerances du circuit et d'optimiser ses performances en fonction des valeurs de ses elements

Ce travail de recherche concerne un domaine en plein developpement qui est l'analyse des sensibilites des structures en vue de leur optimisation. Le calcul des sensibilites represente une partie tres importante et tres complexe dans le processus d'optimisation structurale. Il est donc essentiel de disposer des modules de calcul des sensibilites qui soient efficaces et precis. Dans ce contexte, nous avons developpe une methode numerique d'analyse des sensibilites independante du logiciel de calcul des structures par elements finis. Cette nouvelle methode est basee sur l'approche continue et appelee methode de la mise a echelle des forces internes (ou methode des pseudo-forces). Les variables de conception concernent les epaisseurs ou les dimensions transversales des elements. Nous avons developpe des algorithmes et des modules numeriques d'interfacage de la nouvelle methode d'analyse des sensibilites avec un logiciel de calcul des structures. Le code industriel d'elements finis abaqus a ete choisi pour effectuer ce couplage. N'importe quel autre logiciel de calcul des structures pourrait etre choisi dans cette these. Ensuite, nous avons developpe des interfaces informatiques entre le module d'analyse des sensibilites, le code d'elements finis abaqus et le programme d'optimisation mathematique afin de realiser un systeme de dimensionnement optimal des structures. Afin de valider numeriquement ces methodes et des algorithmes developpes sur des exemples d'optimisation des differents types de structures nous avons compare nos resultats avec d'autres methodes (differences finies) et avec le logiciel de calcul des structures uai/nastran.

Education is one of the important issues relating to Republic in the first decades of the last century. This, especially in its school version, was an apparatus to lead the new generations for what it had become - or for what it wished to become - the nation, moving away from the imaginary and symbolic of the Second Empire. In order to do so, the republican education had its focus on guiding teachers not only to teach contents and methods, but inside and parallel to them, to improve the education of sensibilities of children and young people. One of the inversions in this experience are the pedagogical printed stuffs that, at a key moment in the press and in the school, carried out this impulse through the discursive structure composed especially of narratives, articles and prescriptions. Considering this framework, this thesis presents results of a research whose objective was to investigate topics of education of the sensibility in São Paulo in the first two decades of the twentieth century, which are substantially for the effort to produce sensitivities in accordance with the Republic. The research analyzed the Revista de Ensino da Associação Beneficente do Professorado Público Paulista and the Anuário de Ensino do Estado de São Paulo. It considered the myths in the form of reports, fictional or not; differentiated pedagogical orientations for boys and girls; the invention of a republican childhood, especially of scholarly character; the ambiguity of fantasies. The conclusions point out the strong gender division of prescriptions; the subjectivation of children and young people in school form, with emphasis on the processes of selfcontainment; the infantilization of the feminine, seen nature to be under social domination; the denegation of uncontrolled expressive forms, simultaneously with the valorization of the rituals of belonging to the Republic
Uma das importantes questões que se relacionam aos impulsos republicanos nas primeiras décadas do século passado é a educação. Esta, em especial em sua versão escolar, foi um dispositivo para formar as novas gerações para o que se tornara – ou para o que desejava tornar-se – a nação, afastando-se do registro imaginário e simbólico imperial. Para tanto, ocupou-se a educação republicana de orientar os mestres escolares não apenas nos termos dos conteúdos e métodos de ensino, mas, em seu interior e em paralelo a eles, pautar formas de educar as sensibilidades de crianças e jovens. Uma das formas investidas nessa experiência são os impressos pedagógicos que em momento chave da imprensa e da escola, levaram a cabo essa empreitada por meio da tessitura discursiva composta especialmente por narrativas, artigos e prescrições. Considerando este quadro, esta tese expõe resultados de uma pesquisa cujo objetivo foi investigar aspectos desse processo de educação do sensível em São Paulo nas duas primeiras décadas do século vinte, marcantes para o esforço de produção de sensibilidades em conformidade com a República. Orientando-se pela análise de dois conjuntos de documentos, a Revista de Ensino da Associação Beneficente do Professorado Público Paulista e o Anuário de Ensino do Estado de São Paulo, foram analisados os mitos passadistas na forma de relatos, ficcionais ou não, a destinação de imperativos pedagógicos diferenciados para meninos e meninas, a invenção de uma infância republicana, especialmente de caráter escolarizado, a ambivalência das fantasias. As conclusões apontam para a rígida divisão de gênero nas prescrições; a subjetivação de crianças e jovens na forma escolar, com ênfase nos processos de contenção de si; a infantilização do feminino, visto como mais próximo da natureza a ser dominada; a denegação das formas expressivas não controladas, em simultaneidade com a valorização dos rituais de pertencimento à República

Cette etude porte sur les themes de la sensibilite et de la lucidite en tant que forces de penetration de la realite de l'apartheid. Apres avoir examine le contexte socio-politique, culturel et litteraire de l'afrique du sud, et apres avoir analyse et situe les oeuvres de nadine gordimer dans ce contexte, nous pouvons conclure que la conscience sociale et esthetique a permis a l'auteur de livrer une etude fort penetrante de la societe sudafricaine. Le gout tres prononce de la minutie et des nuances, le sens aigu de l'observation et de la precision, et enfin, la profondeur de l'analyse sont incontestablement le produit d'une ame sensible et d'un esprit lucide
This study focuses on the themes of sensibility and lucidity as forces of penetration into the realities of apartheid. After an examination of the socio-political, the cultural and the literary contexts of south africa, and having analysed and placed nadine gordimer's works within these contexts, we are able to conclude that her social and esthetic awareness has enabled the author to make a profound study of south african society. The keen observation, the attention to detail and the depth of analysis are, without doubt, the product of a sensitive and perceptive mind

L'acetylcholinesterase est une enzyme cle au sein de l'espace intersynaptique. Elle est la cible des insecticides carbamates et organophosphores. Certaines modifications biochimiques impliquant cette enzyme sont responsables de la resistance des insectes aux insecticides. En premier lieu, nous avons etudie les modifications quantitatives : l'analyse de certaines populations de drosophiles montre une augmentation de la quantite d'enzyme dans le systeme nerveux, ce qui implique un role dans la resistance. Les modifications qualitatives sont entrainees par des mutations dans le site actif de l'enzyme. Nous avons etudie le nombre de mutations possibles pouvant entrainer la resistance, ainsi que les facteurs de selection des combinaisons de mutations au sein du meme gene. De nouvelles mutations de resistance ont egalement ete recherchees. Un volet gestion de la resistance a ete aborde en etudiant la possibilite de detecter les mutations de resistance par voie biochimique, ainsi que la possibilite de reverser la resistance. D'autre part, la sensibilite de l'acetylcholinesterase aux insecticides en fait un outil efficace de detection des polluants dans l'environnement par l'utilisation de biocapteurs. Nous avons montre que l'enzyme la plus indiquee pour cet usage etait l'enzyme de drosophile et qu'il etait possible d'augmenter sa sensibilite par mutagenese a l'interieur du site actif.

The question of homoerotic sensibility is, in the purpose of this thesis, a matter of visual language connected to the portrayal of male bodies. By identifying this sensibility throughout the western art canon the essay seeks to understand its origins, development and function in relation to expressions of power. With the introduction of theorists such as Alois Riegl, Laura Mulvey, Abigail Solomon-Godeau and Raewyn Connell, the aim is to deconstruct homosexual masculinity. Adapting formal analysis and parts of visual semiotics, the focus lies on the visual expression of power through the homoerotic gaze, and asks what consequences it has in forming homosexual identity. Greek antiquity is home not only to the ideals that foster western art history, but is also where we find early examples of same-sex affection being portrayed in the arts. Hence classical antiquity is so important for the homoerotic: whenever the classical language of style is popular throughout history, we are sure to find homoerotic sensibility. For reasons mentioned, the main periods analyzed are the Italian Renaissance, the French Neoclassicism and then, naturally the late 20th century onwards as this is the period of gay liberation and modern homosexual identity.  By identifying classical acceptance of homosexual relations only in the form of a clear social hierarchy, we soon discover how homosexuality has appropriated the idea of binary difference within its masculinity throughout history. Accepting relationships only between erastes and eromenos, or man and ephebe, homosexuality is forced to exist only on the terms of difference of power. With classical ideals, these tendencies are recurring in the visual representation of male homosexuality, and becomes a big part of the liberation and forming of a modern identity in the late twentieth century. As a result of objectification of the male body, in combination with idealized and sexualized power, modern gay culture has in many ways embraced a destructive culture shaped by misogynist ideas of hegemonic culture, where sexual violence exists, but is not spoken of.

Les oscillateurs a quartz tres stables peuvent etre affectes par des champs magnetiques meme de faible valeur. Le but de cette etude est de determiner la contribution de chaque composant dans la sensibilite magnetique des oscillateurs a quartz et de trouver le moyen de la diminuer voire de la supprimer. L'influence du champ magnetique sur les resonateurs a quartz est etudiee experimentalement et theoriquement: l'etude experimentale a permis de determiner les principaux facteurs qui conditionnent leur sensibilite magnetique, notamment le role de la nature physique des fixations; l'etude theorique determine, a partir d'une modelisation par elements finis, leur sensibilite theorique. L'influence du champ magnetique sur les composants electroniques est etudiee experimentalement, le dispositif experimental et les procedures mises au point ont permis de mettre en evidence la sensibilite de certains composants: self, transistors, condensateurs. . .

La premiere partie du travail de recherche presente dans ce memoire concerne l'etude du concept de sensibilite selective et son application aux domaines de l'identification parametrique et de la condensation de modeles. L'originalite et l'interet de ce concept resident dans les proprietes particulieres conferees aux vecteurs satisfaisant la condition de sensibilite selective, et qui sont a l'origine d'un decouplage des differents parametres associes au modele. Exploitee dans le contexte du recalage de modeles, la sensibilite selective permet de decouper l'espace des parametres a corriger en sous-espaces de petites dimensions qui sont traites separement, enterinant ainsi le probleme du mauvais conditionnement caracteristique des systemes a un nombre eleve d'inconnues. En ce sens, la methode de recalage de modeles fondee sur le concept de sensibilite selective s'inscrit dans la droite ligne des methodes de regularisation a priori. Par ailleurs, l'usage de ce concept en condensation de modeles a conduit a la formulation d'une methode permettant d'obtenir un modele reduit qui, en plus de preserver le comportement dynamique du modele initial dans une certaine bande frequentielle, preserve sa topologie. Cette propriete, particulierement attrayante en optimisation de comportement ou en perturbation de systemes, est la encore le fruit des proprietes selectives des vecteurs formant la base de projection qui lie les reponses des modeles initial et condense. Quant a la deuxieme partie du travail, elle consiste en la recherche de criteres permettant de comparer differents residus classiquement utilises en identification parametrique de modeles. Cette recherche s'inspire du concept de discernabilite de modeles et conduit a l'elaboration d'un critere qui compare les residus sur leurs potentiels respectifs a discerner plusieurs modeles, pour une meme information incomplete et incertaine disponible sur la structure
