This paper presents an study over reading as a discursive process, based on the French semiotics. It investigates how the reading process happens by the study of enunciation and by the organization of the generative process of the meaning in the text. It investigates how the enunciator and the enunciatee (seen as the author and the reader that the text allow us to conceive) relate in the text and which are the values that one passes to the other by the circulation of value objects in the narrative. For these investigations is used a juvenile fictional narrative named Where have you been, Robert (Wo warst du, Robert?), by the German author Hans Magnus Enzensberger. In this story, a teenager escapes from the reality of the world where he lives and travels back in time and space, seven times. These trips are compared to reading, as both are understood as a process which starts from the eyes. It is also believed that this narrative fictionalizes the process of reading as an act and that the protagonist searches for knowledge as his value object. When he comes to possess knowledge, he returns to his original world and is satisfied because, as a satisfied reader, he feels as somebody who knows better than the others.

Abstract (sommario):
This study presents a new theory of semiotics (the study of signs). The theory, called finite semiotics, proposes that the growing effects and challenges of technology, as well as signs themselves, can be better understood by examining our cognition in finite, quantitative terms. Two illustrative applications of the theory are developed. The first addresses the ethical problem of accountability for technology's effects by introducing a new concept of cognitive externalities. The second derives a computational method for automating opposition analysis, a technique central to applied semiotics.

Abstract (sommario):
Communication campaigns by major organizations in the field of development have been heavily dependent on humanitarian photography to motivate and attract donors. This genre of photography serves its purpose by informing, surprising and attracting the attention of a broad audience. It captures real life and real problems people in need have to deal with in remote areas of the world. This paper delves into the use of visual semiotics in the context of humanitarian photography and for the purpose of fund-raising by case study research of recent communication campaigns as implemented by major players in the field such as the International Committee of the Red Cross, the Global Fund to Fights AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, Doctors without Border, CARE and Save the Children. The purpose is to identify key issues which allow for the elicitation of a sign framework specific to the fund-raising genre and its idiosyncratic use of visual signs in photography based on a broad theoretical basis of semiotics. The analysis focuses on the content and methods of signification of photography in each case study. The effectiveness of humanitarian photography and important aspects of its function is discussed in the scope of its use as a communication medium for development.

Mohammadzadeh, Darodi Maryam. "Models of colour semiotics". Thesis, University of Leeds, 2012. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/4150/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis is concerned with the relationship between colour and certain bi-polar characteristics. This topic has previously been studied through highly controlled laboratory-based experiments but this thesis starts from the question of whether experiments conducted in the laboratory (which are necessarily constrained to have low numbers of participants) can ever hope to capture the full complexity of the relationships being studied, since there are likely to be strong cultural and regional differences. The key advance in this work therefore was to explore the use of a web-based experiment for collecting data on a large scale and from all over the world. A laboratory-based experiment to explore colour semiotics was carried out and broadly supports the earlier work carried out by Ou et al. A novel paradigm for carrying out colour semiotic experiments based on a large-scale internet presentation and distributed over large numbers of participants (over 2000 from 58 countries) was then conceived and implemented. Comparison with the laboratory-based experiment broadly validated the use of this new paradigm. The large amount of data collected allowed an analysis of gender and cultural differences to be carried out and it was shown that cultural and age may be significant factors but that gender is probably not. The thesis has made a contribution in terms of collecting new data, generating new models, and testing a web-based paradigm for carrying out colour-based experiments. One application of the colour-semiotic models that has been developed at the end of this thesis is in the design process and a potential new software tool that could build a bridge between science and design has been considered.

The objective of this survey is to investigate the metaphor/analogy use in science education. For that, we based on peircean semiotics reference, because it is a string legacy to language philosophy studies. The scientific speech has always comprised a paradox: at the same time that it proposes an objective, denotative text, it usually employs metaphors/analogies, as a resource to transmit and help the construction of concepts. A secular procedure, which presents several consequences for science and science education. Metaphor is a sign, therefore it is a cognitive operator. This feature has conducted our survey through the linguistic enunciation and pictorial representations (smaller amount). Despite all the facts against the metaphoric/analogical use, our finds revealed the great importance of its use for science education, especially Biology, which is our empiric survey subject. The major objective, we believe it was reached, is to contribute actively, directly and in a simple way, to the surveys concerning this subject.

Abstract (sommario):
The work is devoted to semiotics and art as two sciences guided by symbolism and signs. Semiotics studies symbols, signs and myths, which can explain works of art to ordinary viewers as well as creative people. Thus, artists can be guided in the creation of works of art to accurately convey their ideas and convey the feelings and imagery of their thinking. The interdisciplinarity of these sciences provides an opportunity to better communicate, exchange ideas and research the sciences.

The lack of consistence between Physical Education theoretic methods and the reality observed on school context stimulated us to identify the necessity of creating new paths to be stepped by Physical Education area in order to reach the globalized contemporary scenery. Motivated by that necessity, this research is related to ‘Practices and Formative Process on Education’ and it was developed at Education Post Graduation Program of UNESP Science Faculty (Presidente Prudente). As result, a great potential to suggest new teaching possibilities to Pedagogical Action on Physical Education have been found at the concepts of Semiotics presented by Charles Sanders Peirce (1839-1914). To discuss the theme, we analyzed the relationship among some theoretical concepts of Semiotics (Categories of Experience, Semiosis, Pragmaticism, Scientific Method) and some pedagogical theories of Physical Education. Thabela, Tendani Mulanga. "Resemiotization and discourse practices in selected television advertisements in South Africa". University of the Western Cape, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/11394/5381.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Magister Artium - MA
This study demonstrates how advertisers re-voice and re-perform others' gestures and actions (Prior and Hengst, 2010). The focus is on the mobility of semiosis across boundaries and practices. It uses Multimodal Discourse Analysis (Kress and Van Leeuwen, 1996, 2001, 2006) Semiotic Remediation/Resemiotization (Iedema, 2003, 2010; Prior and Hengst, 2010) as the theoretical/analytical framework. The idea is to explore how semiotic elements are remediated through intertextual references and multimodality and how semiotic remediation is employed in the process of re-creation and re-purposing of objects and messages in the selected television advertisements. Drawing on MTN, Vodacom, Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) and Nando's television advertisements, the study shows how popular, historical, cultural and political discourse is reproduced and re-lived as a creative idea in the selected television advertisements in the process of re-branding. In this regard, resemiotization or semiotic remediation is seen as social practice and an integral part of the marketing strategy in the South African television advertising industry. Upon examination, the study establishes that some selected television advertisements have been extensively re-worked and re-purposed. Therefore, resemiotization and/or semiotic remediation are found to be resourceful tools for the marketing discourse. Thus, the study found that South African advertising discourse depends primarily on societal discourses such as politics, history, cultural traditions and popular culture as its base for creativity. In terms of language use in South African advertising, the study has revealed that television advertisements are moving towards a localised language practice and/or localised English.

Walker, Paul Joseph. "Semiotics and the discourse of architecture". Thesis, University of Auckland, 1987. http://wwwlib.umi.com/dissertations/fullcit/8812775.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis addresses a problematic of meaning and of semiotics in architecture by considering a number of questions. Why have meaning and semiotics been of concern in architectural discourse? How did semiotics enter that discourse? How does it operate there? The first chapter explores the notion of meaning in art, assuming this to have bearing on meaning in architecture. Functionalism is investigated as an implicitly semantic view of architecture: it is proposed that it is the failure of functionalism in practice which underlies the recent concern with meaning. Chapter 2 introduces the work of eight semioticians: Saussure, Peirce, Morris, Mukarovsky, Jakobson, Levi-Strauss, Barthes, and Eco. Chapter 3 poses the question of why semiotics has been attractive to architects. Attention is given to Tafuri's notion that semiotics serves both to bolster the current status of architecture (by blockading investigation of its discursive characteristics) and as radial criticism. Work by Norberg-Schulz and by Jencks is shown to be blockade; that by Agrest and Gandelsonas more nearly critical. It is proposed that semiotics and the discourse of modern architecture are epistemologically analogous, which circumstance has facilitated and been conditional to the entry of semiotics into architecture. The fourth chapter examines Eco's and Preziosi's rigorous semiotic theories of the built. Both have been posited, however, as theories of architecture; as such they impede rather than foster theorizing with respect to architectural discourse. Chapter 5 assumes a (semiotic) model of architecture as a hierarchy of codes (building, language, drawing, photography). The role of language in architecture is shown to be more important than is generally conceded. Architectural discourse is also shown to be dependent on photography, and, by implication, on other graphic modes. While bearing in mind the links between the postmodern and radical strains of semiotics, the final chapter surveys architecture in culture's present postmodern moment. If the problematic of meaning in architecture has been motivated by the 'emptiness' of the built world constructed under the aegis of functional architecture, this problematic cannot be taken as a recuperation. Rather, the advent of semiotics in the discourse of architecture may signify its transposition to an unknown discursive configuration.

Abstract (sommario):
University of Central Florida College of Engineering Thesis
There is a great need to automatically segment, categorize, and annotate video data, and to develop efficient tools for browsing and searching. We believe that the categorization of videos can be achieved by exploring the concepts and meanings of the videos. This task requires bridging the gap between low-level content and high-level concepts (or semantics). Once a relationship is established between the low-level computable features of the video and its semantics, .the user would be able to navigate through videos through the use of concepts and ideas (for example, a user could extract only those scenes in an action film that actually contain fights) rat her than sequentially browsing the whole video. However, this relationship must follow the norms of human perception and abide by the rules that are most often followed by the creators (directors) of these videos. These rules are called film grammar in video production literature. Like any natural language, this grammar has several dialects, but it has been acknowledged to be universal. Therefore, the knowledge of film grammar can be exploited effectively for the understanding of films. To interpret an idea using the grammar, we need to first understand the symbols, as in natural languages, and second, understand the rules of combination of these symbols to represent concepts. In order to develop algorithms that exploit this film grammar, it is necessary to relate the symbols of the grammar to computable video features.

Abstract (sommario):
In the medical field, advertisements act as markers of healthcare professionals’ marketing capabilities. Advertisements also illustrate a marketer’s knowledge of the target consumer population given the signs and cultural symbols within a specific advertisement. An assessment was performed of advertising aimed at attracting Hispanic patients in regards to health and development. Advertisements from the Phoenix, Arizona based Spanish newspaper La Voz Arizona were analyzed, as well as Spanish-language paper handouts, bilingual signs, and pamphlets from medical clinics in Tucson, Arizona. In each form of communication, there were significant community indicators of culturally sensitive semiotics specific to the Hispanic population, particularly that of Hispanic females. Among the most prevalent topics displayed in the observed advertisements were those of fertility, birth control, and health-benefiting, family lifestyle habits, with grandparents often included in this definition of “familia.” Spanish language advertising in the realm of healthcare does not appear to be lacking, however, there is a growing demographic of bilingual Hispanics that participate in English language forms of popular media that may not be reached by such communicative methodology. Fostering a popular media environment which renders accessibility to these Hispanics via the utilization of culturally sensitive semiotics is imperative for robust economic development and enhanced service in healthcare.

This work analyses the collection of videos HayMotivos.com, defined as an online documentary (docweb), from the concept and historical approach of documentary as a genre, its boderline with fiction cinema and its migration to the web environment. After it is described and contextualized, HayMotivo.com is analyzed in a comprehensive perspective, through the use of the generative process of the expression plan, by Jacques, Fontanille, which allows to make explicit the integration of the levels of semiotic pertinence, emphasizing the support-object (internet) as the practices and strategies (audiovisual techniques used). Once it has been proved that HayMotivo.com represents a new practice for the production of documentaries in the web, we chose four vídeos, corpus of this research, to analyze in an enclosed perspective: Español para extranjeros, Soledad, Kontrastasun and Catequesis. The use of generative process of the content plan, by A. J. Greimas, allows for a finer analysis, by evidencing recurring semes and deep level oppositions, actant roles and value objects in the narrative level and the pictures, thermes and enunciation marks and simulacrum, in discourse level. Thje theoretical research and the comparative analysis revealed other aspects which have been explicated through the use of some concepts of the tensive grammar by Claude Zilberberg. Condensed in the Category Table, the practices and strategies of HayMotivo.com served as basis for our practical exercise, the production of the experimental docweb Brincandeira de criança (Child play), published on Youtube.com, which represents the main result of our research: the passing from theory to practice.

Abstract (sommario):
English has become the dominant language for internet users throughout the world and the internet has had its own impact on the English language. The main aim for this essay is to compare and contrast different online discussion forums and other related online discourses in order to show how meaning is created and to identify any differences that may exist depending on the forum. To do this, I have chosen specific features of language and analyzed their use in a number of different online sources. The research has shown that most of the language features commonly used in everyday speech are also present online. There is a difference in which features are used, where, and how frequently they occur, but the determining factor differs depending on the feature; the use of some features depends on the topic while the use of others depends on the website. The overall conclusion of the research is that the language on the websites used as primary data is not at all simplified in comparison to spoken language. The same language features and conventions are still used and understood in the same way as spoken language.

This is a study about the ways in which pictures can be interpreted and the ways in which they are interpreted; the latter, specifically, in a relatively remote part of Peru. Chapter II reviews an assortment of picture tests which bring to light differences in the ways pictures are perceived. Chapter III examines the specific cultural context in which a fairly informal picture test was administered. Chapter IV presents some results and asks what cultural and situational factors may have contributed to the variety in interpretations evident. The drawing of firm conclusions is precluded by the absence of any systematic approach to the interpretations or to the pictures themselves, and it is this which the second half of the study attempts to remedy; by providing a theoretical framework for the assessment of verbalized responses to pictures. Chapter V offers a definition of "picture" and locates it within a typology of indices. It also examines the notion of "visual resemblance", eventually adopting the view that any picture is infinitely ambiguous. Chapter VI introduces two methodological necessities consequent on this ambiguity: a stipulation as to the identity and the taxonomic specificity of any signified object; and a stipulation as to the spatial extension of its signifier. No other methodological content is presented. Chapter VII classifies types of verbalized responses in terms of their visual motivation, and the degree to which they interrelate the stipulated pictorial units. Chapter VIII acknowledges that signification may continue beyond the representational level. Further, postrepresentational, types of responses are classified in terms of the nature of the link maintained with the representational signified.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis sets out to describe sign systems for communication using Axiomatic Functionalism as its theoretical framework. In doing so, the thesis also provides an important test to the claim of Axiomatic Functionalism that by using its premisses the semiotician (or linguist) has all the necessary "tools" s/he needs for the analysis and description (the one implies the other) of any semiotic system for communication (including Language). Using Axiomatic Functionalism the author attempts to describe a number of graphic semiotic systems for communication. He finds that for an adequate description of the signa (a generic term which includes various types of signs and symbols) in these systems further theoretical notions and definitions are needed. Discussing these the author concludes that for Axiomatic Functionalism to maintain its claim of universal applicability to any sign system for communication it needs to incorporate in its premisses the notions and definitions proposed here. The thesis begins by a brief general introduction to semiotics. This is followed by a discussion of what constitutes scientific theories in relation to semiotics (including linguistics). The relevant aspects of Axiomatic Functionalism are then discussed, after which certain original theoretical notions are introduced. These include: “mnemonic economy" (with its many manifestations including "mnemonic/pictorial motivation"), the "general organising principle" ("systemic principle"), "principle of coinage" (a mechanism for generating signa), and "signum-family”. Having established the necessary theoretical background, the author proceeds to describe various graphic “signum-systems" discussing their important features and establishing the types of signum they consist of and, consequently, the types of system they are, their complexity and the "plerology” (grammar) of each system, where present. The systems discussed include various systems used in books on plants; a system used in a book on "lace knitting"; a system used in working models; a system used in providing information about paintings in the "Classics of World Art" series of books; and a system used in the "Automobile Association" handbooks. Further Axiomatic Functionalist theoretical notions, directly relevant to the systems described thereafter, are then introduced. This is followed by a description of three systems: two computer "languages", the "Hexadecimal notation" and the "binary code", and the "Library of Congress classification system". A final brief "Epilogue" concludes the thesis.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis is concerned with the realm of the interpersonal: broadly, those linguistic phenomena involved in the negotiation of social relations and the expression of personal attitudes and feelings. The initial contention is that this realm has been consistently marginalised not only within linguistic theory, but more broadly within western culture, for cultural and ideological reasons whose implications extend into the bases of classical linguistic theory. Chapter 1 spells out the grounds for this contention and is followed by two further chapters, constituting Part I: Language and Social Relations. Chapter 2 identifies and critiques the range of ways in which the interpersonal has been conventionally interpreted: as style, as formality, as politeness, as power and solidarity, as the expressive, etc. This chapter concludes with an argument for the need for a stratified model of language in order to deal adequately with these phenomena. Chapter 3 proposes such a model, based on the systemic-functional approach to language as social semiotic. The register category tenor within this model is extended to provide a model of social relations as a semiotic system. The basis for the identification of the three tenor dimensions, power, distance and affect, is the identification of three modes of deployment or realisation of the interpersonal resources of English in everyday discourse: reciprocity, proliferation and amplification. Parts II and III turn their attention to one significant issue in the negotiation of social relations: address. The focus is explicitly on Australian English, but there is considerable evidence that most if not all of the forms discussed in Part II occur in other varieties of English, especially British and American, and that some at least of the practices discussed in Part III involve the same patterns of social relations with respect to the tenor dimensions of power, distance and affect. Because most varieties of contemporary English do not have a set of options for second-person pronominal address, as is the case in many of the world's languages, English speakers use names and other nominal forms which need to be described. Part II is descriptive in orientation, providing an account of the grammar of VOCATION in English, including a detailed description of the nominal forms used. Chapter 4 investigates the identification and functions of vocatives, and includes empirical investigations of vocative position in clauses and vocative incidence in relation to speech function or speech act choices. Chapter 5 presents an account of the grammar of English name forms, organised as a paradigmatic system. This chapter incorporates an account of the processes used to produce the various name-forms used in address, including truncation, reduplication and suffixation. Chapter 6 consists of an account of non-name forms of address, organised in terms of the systemic-functional account of nominal group structure. This chapter deals with single-word non-name forms of address and the range of nominal group structures used particularly to communicate attitude, both positive and negative. Part III is ethnographic in orientation. It describes some aspects of the use of the forms described in Part II in contemporary address practice in Australia and interprets such practice using the model of social relations as semiotic system presented in Part I. The major focuses of attention is on address practice in relation to the negotiation of gender relations, with some comment on generational relations of adults with children, on class relations and on ethnic relations in nation with a diverse population officially committed to a policy of a multiculturalism. Part III functions simultaneously as a coda for this thesis, and a prologue for the kind of ethnographic study that the project was originally intended to be, but which could not be conducted in the absence of an adequate linguistically-based model of social relations and an adequate description of the resources available for address in English.

Abstract (sommario):
Video games are a challenging object of study for the musicologist because they are never played the same way twice. As video games are interactive texts, the timing of their musical events is dependent on both conventional cues and player interactions. In essence, the musical experience of gameplay may be considered as a text that the player has a non-trivial role in creating. The player’s unique series of actions evolves into an interpretation of the developer’s preconception of the game experience; similarly, the player’s actions shape the music into an interpretation of the musical experience envisioned by the composer. The analysis of these musical events must consequently be able to account for dynamic processes in both reception and creation. An important step towards appropriate analytical methods is the development of a semiotics of video game music. Incorporating a performative approach to interactivity, this thesis proposes a semiotic framework that seeks to address the complex processes of creation and reception/perception belonging to video game music due to its position within the audiovisual text. This semiotic framework is twofold, focussing separately on the music’s initial composition (a primarily poietic set of processes) and on the player’s role during gameplay (simultaneously performing processes of ergodic reception and interactive poiesis). The framework is developed and illustrated using textual case studies. Additionally, the implications of the framework for cross-media studies are explored, including the in-game and extra-game contexts of video game music, and the distinction between video game music and music in other audiovisual texts.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis forms a sociological investigation of the ‘hipster’ subculture that has grown in importance in recent years. Using the methodology of semiotic analysis, it examines the trends and themes shown by the images that hipsters post on the microblogging website Tumblr, as well as analysing hipster journalism, texts and companies. This communication is conceptualised with reference to Jean Baudrillard’s theory of hyperreality in order to show that hipsters communicate in a way that distorts the perception of real space and results in the abstraction of the meaning of ideas like “global” and “local”. It also explores the importance of secret knowledge in a community that manages to be both secretive and extremely open, comparing this example with the historical case of the Beat Generation, who hipsters have adopted as their progenitors, and discusses how their influence drives the hipster to view the world as a literary text to be re-read and re-interpreted.

Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of this study is to examine adult literacy beyond its constraints as a social problem and instead consider the implications of illiteracy as a particular form of lived experience, analogous to women's oppression at large. Through a complex system of meaning making, the knowledge accrued by illiterate adults is qualitatively different, and examining these differences in terms of their correlation to coping mechanisms developed in the face of social alienation and diminished professional prospects yields a greater understanding of class privilege and how nontraditional learners fit into a larger social structure. From the perspective of academic feminism, adult illiteracy presents several problems regarding the scope of an inclusive feminist community that acknowledges privilege and difference. The primary method through which information regarding feminism is conferred is printed materials, which utilize highly specific, specialized jargon, and unwittingly create an exclusive community marred by internalized racism and class stratifications. This study explores other methods through which feminist ideation might theoretically be possible, i.e. cultural "reading" communities and vocational and continuing education programs focused on cultural competencies, as women come out of their imposed silences and become aware of their circumstances in a way that resembles feminist thought, if perhaps without sophisticated language with which to communicate those ideals. In this way, feminist ideation and semiotics tie in together, as attitudinal change may occur without the semantic realization of what this entails. This goal of this paper is also, in part, to justify why acknowledging gendered learning differences and a particular female subjectivity for adult literacy clients will yield better results for their self-valuation, as gender is a component of diversity all but ignored within the scheme of adult literacy pedagogical theory.

Abstract (sommario):
My work is aiming at establishing the bases of a semiotics of motion, in order to facilitate the programing of complex robotics systems. The objective is to build a symbolic model of the action, based on the analysis of the numerical functions that drive the motion (control and planning). The methodology comes from the well-known robotics concepts: motion-planning algorithms, control of redundant systems and task-function approach. The originality of the work is to consider the "task" as the unifying concept both to describe the motion and to control its execution. The document is organized in two parts. In the first part, the task-function control framework is extended to cover all the possible modalities of the robot. The objective is to absorb from the lowest-possible functional level the maximum of uncertainty factors. It is then not any more necessary to model these factors at the higher functional levels. This sensorimotor layer is then used as a basic action "vocabulary" that enables the system to be controlled with a higher-level interface. In the second part, this action vocabulary is used to provide a dedicated robotics programing language, to build motion-planning methods and to describe an observed movement. The proposed methods are generic and can be applied to a various systems, from robotics (redundant robots) to computer animation (virtual avatars). Nonetheless, the work is more specifically dedicated to humanoid robotics. Without forgetting other possible outlets, humanoid robotics provides a tangible applicative and experimental framework. It also leads toward the natural human motion, as presented in the end of the document.

Curry, Ben. "Reading conventions, interpreting habits : Peircian semiotics in music". Thesis, Cardiff University, 2011. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/54429/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The influence of Peircian semiotics on the study of music has grown during the last two decades due to the recognition of Robert Hatten's achievements, a major study by Naomi Cumming, the prolific final years of Raymond Monelle and the continued success of Eero Tarasti's work with the International Association of Semiotic Studies. Peirce's thought is extraordinarily rich and rigorous but this thesis identifies a tendency amongst musicologists deploying Peircian thought to reinscribe a number of ideological convictions. In broad terms these convictions can be described as the reification and legitimization of a body of music, and more specifically as an attempt to stabilize musical meanings whilst locating them within a 'music-in-itself. It is in this sense that Peircian semiotics has been used to resist developments in popular and new musicologies. The role of Peirce's theory in this discourse needs careful re-examination. The work of Robert Hatten in its search for meaning through and around the contextual (or intertextual) relations of a 'work' represents the most successful application, to date, of Peircian semiotics to music. But Hatten's emphasis upon composers, structure and stylistic contexts, and his relative neglect of listeners, subjectivity and social forces renders his project incomplete. Through a detailed explanation of some of the central insights offered by Peirce's philosophical project this thesis develops a theory of musical meaning which has listening processes and the formation of identity/subjectivity at its centre. A key tool in developing this theory concerns the dimensions of time and their coordination with Peirce's universal categories. The possibility of informing and developing the close-reading practices that still dominate the tradition of musical analysis will be explored through a discussion and analysis of the Allegro of Mozart's 'Prague' Symphony in the light of the theories developed in earlier chapters, with particular reference to Peirce's concept of valency.

Abstract (sommario):
The research explores the theoretical possibility of a semiotic approach to the Museum phenomenon, seen as a process of communication and signification, and the consequences on the determination of the social function of museums, in its semantic and pragmatic levels. It proposes a new discipline for the field - that of 'Museum Semiotics', as a theoretical background and a tool for the understanding of museums as 'semiosic spaces', acting in the cultural process through their 'communicative actions'. PARTS I and II propose the basic assumptions and premises for the study of the specific Museum Language, defining its terms and concepts, and considering museum objects as bearing a 'sign-function', as 'signifying units' used in the construction of messages and 'discourses', manifested or hidden in museum exhibitions. The mechanisms of the process of sign production and of sign interpretation in the Museum context, the concept of 'museality', the Museum 'mythological speech', the interplay of codes and the interaction between emitters and receivers in the museum communication process, are explored here. PARTS III and IV propose and develop a preliminary model of analysis of exhibition 'texts' and of their specific 'rhetorics', applied in a particular case study, the exhibition on 'Buddhism, Art and Faith', held at the British Museum (1985), in order to detect the multiple ways in which the public 'reads' a Museum message, and all the elements working in this process. PART V presents the conclusions and insights on Museum Communication, on exhibition production and evaluation, on Museum Education, and on new fields of research opened up through the approach of Museum Semiotics, proposing a strategy for changing the conditions of communication, through open and aesthetic texts, which may encourage the visitors to recover their freedom of decoding'.

Abstract (sommario):
The objective of this study was to analyze the visual communication of fashion brand identity through the concept of window displays. Window displays are often categorized as an aspect of a much larger concept of visual merchandising that should be seen as a crucial part of the entire marketing communications. Although the concept of window displays is not new, their effect on the overall brand image creation remains relatively unexplored. The interpretation of communication in a visual form is complex in nature, and this research approaches the matter from a semiotic perspective. The approach was selected due to its capability to explore deeper meanings behind visual objects. In this study, window display is understood as a crucial part of the sign system of a fashion store. Window display is commonly regarded as the starting point of the entire shopping experience, and therefore in the lack of previous research, it is a logical starting point for this study. The analytical framework of the study follows the thee metafunctions of semiotic modes as discussed in the Theory of the Grammar of Visual Design by Kress and van Leeuwen (2006). The analytical framework is then applied to analyze six different window displays produced by the same fashion brand. Findings of the research are discussed in terms of the three metafunctions of ideational, interpersonal and textual, and the purpose is to increase the knowledge of how window displays can be used to depict different relations between brand, people, places and things. In terms of brand identity communication, the most important contribution is to understand the complex relationship that is formed between the window (the brand) and its viewer (the customer). As a result, this research finds that the window displays are loaded with multiple visual cues all of which intend to serve the same purpose of brand identity communication. Clothing and accessories are the most salient elements used and they can be understood as the embodiment of the brand identity. Images of models and mannequins are used to address the viewers and create a specific relationship with them. The less salient elements in the window displays are used to support the message the brand is conveying through the display.

Abstract (sommario):
Urban Voodoo mimics semiotic phenomena, which constitute language and functions as a system of signs that intra-act ambiguously within their own system. This project explores the link between the ambiguous signs of the worm, what looks like a mimesis of icons/symbols, and the way in which simulations are caught up in semiotic implications. Urban Voodoo, which followed on from my earlier Project Iroiro, developed language precursors from the study of the marks of the worm, creating different patterns and styles, and generating language-like effects. Using this system of signs, my project explores the idea that humans are part of a system operated by language, and examines the notion that language itself may be disrupted. To explore this, my project is about layers of competing imprints, about 'languages' tagged into spaces occupied by several graffiti artists within a local skate park. Urban Voodoo acts as a new Graffiti system. In mimicry, organisms make themselves resemble others or their environment. Icons 'look like' what they represent; simulation proposes 'to be' what it suggests. These concepts of assimilation and representation will be explored to understand and interrogate the power balance of language systems, starting with a specific local situation, the skate park. Abstract (sommario):
Abstract The aim of this doctoral thesis is to study culture bound translation phenomena in translations from Finland-Swedish to German. The data consists of Tove Jansson’s Sommarboken and Bildhuggarens Dotter and Kjell Westö’s collection of short stories Lugna Favoriter and the German translations of these books. The general aim of the analysis is to identify the strategies used by the translators to translate different cultural phenomena. Moreover, the consequences of the strategies are dealt with on a pragmatic level. In addition, the aim is to study whether it is easier to translate a Finland-Swedish book into Finnish than into German from the cultural point of view. Semiotics, the science of signs, relations and meanings of signs is an important tool in this doctoral thesis. Translation can be understood not only as a translation of a written text A into a written text B but also in a wider meaning. In addition, the cover of a book and different cultural phenomena can be translated. This point of view is visible, for example, in the semiotic analysis of four bookcovers. The analysis shows that the translators use nine different adaptation strategies. There are also six types of non-adaptation. The adaptations used by the translator, the context and the semiotic space of the reader of the target culture are the factors which have an influence on the level of understanding the target text. It also becomes evident that the more different the target culture is from the source culture, the harder it is to translate from the cultural point of view

Hilda Hilst´s literary work is varied, comprehending poetry, drama and narrative. This piece of work, however, focuses on the narrative of the Paulistana writer, with the intent to capture the tragic reality which passes through the enunciation praxis of discourse. In order to aprehend that praxis, we presupose Hilda Hilst simulates a delirium state, whose predication of the instance of enunciation is delegated to a paranoic actor inside a discourse which lays between lucidity and insanity. The analysis of the discoursive signification, common in the field of the semiotics of discourse, turns to the potentiality of the subjacent system of the tragic, and reveals a path underlined by the attempt of aprehending all the existing discourses. That path constitutes a particular writing which, by being delirious, shows up in a kaleidoscopic-labyrinthic-spiral style, creating in the discourse itself an apparent chaos. In the end of this investigation, the tragic in the discourse translates the human existence itself, in the sense of attributing to it an emptiness that may not be filled in.
