Abstract (sommario):

Rudolf Carnap is a great philosopher of modern Western philosophy of the twentieth century. His thoughts relate to the topics of logics and linguistics in which the conception of semantics occupies an important position. He built a fairly complete semantic system in his classic work, Introduction to Semantics. The study of the logical thoughts of semantics of R. Carnap not only has important theoretical significance for philosophy and logics, but also suggests problems of linguistics and mathematics.

Abstract (sommario):

In this paper I address anew the problem of determinacy in translation by examining the Western philosophical and translation theoretic traditions of the last century. Translation theory and the philosophy of language have largely gone their separate ways (the former opting to rebrand itself as “translation studies” to emphasize its empirical and anti-theoretical underpinnings). Yet translation theory and the philosophy of language predominantly share a common assumption that stands in the way of determinate translation. It is that languages, not texts, are the objects of translation and the subjects of semantics. The way to overcome the theoretical problems surrounding the possibility and determinacy of translation is to marry the philosopher of language’s concern for determinacy and semantic accuracy in translation with the notion of a “text-type” from the translation theory literature. The resulting theory capable of explaining determinacy in translation is what I call the text-type conception of semantics (TTS). It is a novel alternative to the salient positions of Contextualism and Semantic Minimalism in the contemporary philosophy of language.

Language learning cannot be separated from philosophy because philosophy is the mother of science. In its development, language learning was influenced by the philosophy that developed at its time, including analytic philosophy. The influence of Analytic Philosophy is felt in language teaching, especially in semantic and pragmatic research. And Russell's theory of Logical Atomism opens new horizons for scientific research, including linguistics. On the other hand, semantics is an image which is then continued by the theory of meaning used by Wittgenstein as an early study of semantics and pragmatics. Furthermore, the analytical philosophy developed by The Oxford School develops a theory of speech acts that naturally influence language learning, learning is a speech act of language learning. In this thesis I argue that morphology should be allowed to interpret not only the information provided by the syntactic component, but also compositional semantic properties. This conception of grammar requires morphology to interact LF and the semantic component in addition to syntax. Applying this hypothesis, I account for the alternation between partitive and non-partitive structural case in Finnish, which is affected by the semantic property of divisibility. I argue that the property of divisibility, which is relevant for case alternation, is determined within Spell-out domains, which are interpreted immediately following Spell-out. Building on these domains as affecting case marking, I derive the differences between divisibility affecting case morphology and the property of divisibility as determined in the final semantic interpretation. I also discuss the properties of negated event predicates in detail, and argue for a specific view of the semantic import of negation on aspect. I show that in spite of the apparent semantic similarities, the effects of negation on Finnish case marking cannot be assimilated to the instances of case alternation determined by divisibility.
(cont.) I extend this conclusion and discuss the nature of divisibility licensed by negation crosslinguistically in more detail. Finally, I consider further areas where the interaction between semantics and morphology or the phonological form can be detected. I argue that while some of these interactions can be treated by assuming that the latter components are sensitive to semantic properties, not all interactions can be described this way. In general, however, permitting the interaction between semantics and morphology or phonology is desirable and leads to a more economical system, where the number of non-convergent derivations is minimized.

Natural languages use a number of different methods to refer to future eventualities: among them are futurates, as in (la), and futures, as in (lb) and (c). (1) a. The Red Sox (are) play(ing) the Yankees tomorrow. b. We'll change your oil in Madera. c. We're going to change your oil in Madera. This dissertation uses evidence primarily from English, with additional data from Turkish and Indonesian, to argue that these methods all involve universal quantification over subsets of metaphysically accessible futures. One factor in determining which worlds a modal quantifies over is the temporal argument of the modal's accessibility relation. It is well-known that a higher tense affects the accessibility relation of modals. What is not well-known is that there are aspectual operators high enough to affect the accessibility relation of modals. New data presented in this dissertation reveal the presence of aspectual operators located between TP and the future modal projection. The effects of these operators on truth and assertability conditions provide substantial information about the correct characterization of future modality, and indeed of modality in general. Furthermore, the very existence of such aspectual operators raises questions about how aspect is represented in the semantics, if (as is generally assumed) aspectual operators take event arguments, which do not occur outside of the verb phrase.

Abstract (sommario):

A failure detector is an important abstraction to support the implementation f higher level fault-tolerant protocols on distributed asynchronous systems. In this paper we show, via a counter example, that using the best possible failure detector of a given class is not always the key to achieve the best performance for a specific higher level consensus protocol. We argument that this behaviour is due to structural limitations of the consensus protocol that are unlikely to be circumvented, unless stronger abstractions are provided. Thus, we advocate that the designer of a generic failure detection service should concentrate her efforts in implementing the strongest failure detector possible - even if it is not the best within its class, instead of trying to implement the fest failure detector of a weaker class. Following this philosophy, we present the bases of the design of a hierarchical failure detection service with the strongest semantics known, namely that of a perfect failure detector.

Abstract (sommario):

The author interprets two forms of figurativeness of the mystical experience – the touch of man with the spiritual world, God, and the experience of amazement at being – by analysing the symbol of the table in contemporary art. The author first identifies the figurativeness of the fragmentary experience contrary to the mystical experience. Subsequently, she examines the mystical table in the icon of the Trinity by Andrei Rublev as a symbol of sacred hospitality and the eucharistic sacrifice. She also examines the icon’s philosophy as a meeting of the human and the transcendent world (Florensky, Trubeckoi, Evdokimov etc.). Finally, she explains the signs of the figurativeness of the mystical semantics of the table in three contemporary paintings (Jakabčic, Podhorský). These include, for example, Christian allusions, visual minimalism, white colour, contemplative immobility, mysterious to paradoxical imaginations, or the expressive-symbolic use of red and blue.

Thеаim of this paper is to investigate the relationship between the texts of the Hagiography of Saint Cyril (Konstantin Philosopher) and the M. Pavich’s novel “Khazar Dictionary”. The focuses of this research are intertextuality (hypertext / hypothesis) and metatextuality (auto-referential comments), the philosophy of fi ction, the principle of complementarity and possible worlds. Erasing the boundaries between fiction and faction create a special kind of literary discourse, new semantic and formative functions of the text.
