Abstract (sommario):
This article examines how the concept of narrative crystallized within the framework of the philosophy of mind, cognitive linguistics and narrative psychology can shed light on the role of intentional state attribution in the process of communication. The primary aim of this investigation is to shed new light on the presupposition that narrative can be regarded as a tool of communicating representations of intentional relations and events between individuals by verbal and nonverbal means. The paper argues that by illuminating the meaning-creating role of conceptual relationships emerging within narrative frameworks, we can also grasp how to attribute intentionalstates (eg. intention, belief, desire, hope, or fear) to our communication partners using narrative-oriented interpretation schemes, and thus to infer their intentions in communication. Based on this tenet the present article suggests possible answer to questions like what basic types of narratives determine the effectiveness of everyday communication processes; and how this concept-meaning connection embedded in narrative structures can become a factor of self-creation in everyday discourse.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract When the self is thought of as a narrative or story, rather than a substance or thing, the temporal and dramatic dimension of human existence is emphasized. The operation of narrative "emplotment" (Ricoeur, 1983/1984) can configure the diverse events and actions of one's life into a meaningful whole. One's self-concept or self-identity is fashioned by adaptation of plots from one's cul-tural stock of stories and myths. Stories of personal identity differ from literary productions in that they are constructed within an unfolding autobiography and incorporate the accidental events and unintended consequences of actions. Under stressful conditions, a self-narrative may decompose, producing the anxiety and depression of meaninglessness. One function of psychotherapy is to assist in the reconstruction of a meaning-giving narrative of self-identity. (Psychology)

Abstract (sommario):
Humans tend to seek their identity as entities existing over a period of time by making narratives. The paper argues that seeking diachronic self-identity through narratives or stories results in the self-experience being one of separation or alienation from the real world. This happens because language is primarily a form of secondary representation, and the means by which we attempt to find identity often appear in the form of narratives. The dominance of the metaphor of life as a journey shows this. The remedy is to reduce the hold of narrativity by making self-experience fundamentally episodic.

Abstract (sommario):
This qualitative study assesses the use of narrative therapy with self-cutting adolescents. The researcher, formally trained in narrative therapy, delivered a six to eight week narrative intervention separately to two self-cutting adolescent girls referred by their schools to an Educational Psychology Service. The study addressed four research questions. Pre- and post intervention self-report measures and parental reports were used to investigate research question no. 1: 'What effect does narrative therapy have upon the mental health of self-cutting adolescents?' Pre- and post-intervention narrative assessment interviews, and information from the intervention session transcripts, were used to compare the adolescents' pre- and post- intervention 'self-stories' and address research question no. 2: 'How does narrative therapy affect the self-stories of self-cutting adolescents?' The adolescents' views of the helpfulness, or otherwise, of several narrative practices, including outsider witness groups, were elicited using a post-intervention semi-structured interview and questionnaire. Narrative processes were explored and the adolescents' responses mapped using maps of narrative practice (White, 2007) to address research question no. 3: 'What narrative therapy practices do self-cutting adolescents consider to be helpful?' The study also examined how the researcher, working as an EP, used narrative therapy. This information was used to address research question no. 4: 'How might EPs use narrative therapy in their work?' The study findings indicated that narrative therapy may be a promising intervention for improving the mental health and emotional well being of self-cutting adolescents. A model for the use of narrative therapy by EPs is proposed.

Abstract (sommario):
Thesis (MA (VA)(Visual Arts))--University of Stellenbosch, 2007.
Thesis received without illustrations at the time of submission to this repository.
This research follows the assumption that the notion of performativity can be applied to the visual construction of identity within art-making discourse in order to explore the contingent and mutable nature of identity in representation. My interest in performativity, defined as the active, repetitive and ritualistic processes responsible for the construction of subjectivities, lies within the process of production. I indicate how this notion, within the context of self-representation, can provide the possibility for performing identity as a process. I investigate the extent to which gender, the gaze, memory and narrative contribute to the performative construction of self-representations and reveal, through the exploration of my practical research, that these concepts are themselves performative. Although agency to construct the self can be regarded as problematic, considering the role of language and discourse in determining subjectivities, this research suggests that it is possible to perform interventions from within language. I suggest that the notion of inscription provides a means through which identity constructions can be performed differently; and that my art-making process of repetitive inscription, erasure and re-inscription of image and text and the layering of paint not only reflect the notion of performativity, but also enable me to expose the multiple and fragmented nature of identities.

Patsiopoulos, Ariadne Theodora. "Becoming a self-compassionate counsellor : a narrative inquiry". Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/13750.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Current literature suggests that the compassion that even seasoned counsellors offer to their clients is often unavailable for themselves. It also recommends that counsellors practise self-compassion to promote self-caring behaviours. Yet, the emerging quantitative research on self-compassion does not inquire into counsellor development. To fill this gap, in this study I explored how experienced counsellors have developed self-compassion and how they practise it professionally. Using a narrative research design, I interviewed individuals who counsel in Canada and analyzed their narrative accounts using holistic-content and content-categorical approaches (Lieblich, Tuval-Mashiach, & Zilber, 1998). The resulting 15 narratives provide compelling perspectives on the developmental trajectories of the participants, practical applications of self-compassion in the workplace, and an array of meanings attributed to self-compassion. Seven developmental themes emerged, which are “Ongoing Journey”-ing; Learning Through the School of “Hard Knocks”; “Who Am I?”: Understanding Self/ves; Influences of Spirituality and/or Religion; Therapy and “Complementary” Healing Practices; Opening to Compassionate Beings and/or Role Models; and Being a Compassionate Presence and/or Role Model. The ways in which the participants practise self-compassion in the workplace fell into three domains: in session, relationally in the workplace, and through the implementation of self-care strategies in their personal lives. The findings of this study reveal important information for counsellor training and education in the areas of self-care and burnout prevention, and enhanced counselling practice.

Abstract (sommario):
This creative practice-led research examines the author's transformative learning experience that was facilitated by writing narrative comedy screenplays. Critical reflection on experiences of change management informed the themes and characters in the proposed television series titled Fighting Fit. Critical feedback from a professional script editor, as an industry mentor, was incorporated into the writing process as part of the action research cycle. The exegesis examines the self-directed, transformative learning journey which revealed how parody can perform creative resistance to the corporatisation of education. This thesis contributes new knowledge to screenwriting practice and screenwriting as creative practice-led research.

Abstract (sommario):
Self-initiated in the fall of 2018, Narrative Homes is an ongoing theoretical research project exploring home design through the lens of literature. The creative exploration focuses on the relationship of narratives (storytelling) to the architecture design process. The relationship between architecture and literature is understudied and undervalued with little to no arguments on the subject over the past half century. During this time the discipline of architecture shifted towards autonomy, resulting in an absence of imagination, disciplinary blind spots and a lack of critical engagement with other artistic fields. Narrative Homes looks to reclaim and reinvigorate this territory of architectural experimentation.

Living Through a Pandemic: Competing Covid-19 Narratives in Rural Zimbabwe. Institute of Development Studies, agosto 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/ids.2022.058.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Through a real time analysis of the Covid-19 pandemic across rural Zimbabwe, this Working Paper explores the competing narratives that framed responses and their politics. Based on 20 moments of reflection over two years, together with ongoing document and media analysis and an intensive period of qualitative interviewing, a complex, dynamic story of the pandemic ‘drama’ emerges, which contrasts with snapshot perspectives. Across the period, a science-led public health narrative intersects with a security and control narrative promoted by the state and is countered by a citizens’ narrative that emphasises autonomy, independence, and local innovation. The politics of this contestation over narratives about appropriate pandemic responses are examined over three periods – reflecting different waves of infection – and in relation to two conjunctures – an early, strict lockdown and the rollout of vaccines. Different narratives gain ascendancy and overlap at different times, but a local citizen-led narrative emerges strongly in the context of heavy-handed lockdowns, inadequate state capacity, and struggles around rural livelihoods. The pandemic has reshaped relationships between the state and citizens in important ways, with self-reliance rooted in local resilience central to local pandemic responses.

Prevention and education evidence review: Gambling-related harm. A cura di Margo Hilbrecht. Greo, settembre 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.33684/2021.006.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This report supports an evidence-based approach to the prevention and education objective of the National Strategy to Reduce Harm from Gambling. Applying a public health policy lens, it considers three levels of measures: universal (for the benefit of the whole population), selective (for the benefit of at-risk groups), and indicated (for the benefit of at-risk individuals). Six measures are reviewed by drawing upon a range of evidence in the academic and grey literature. The universal level measures are “Regulatory restriction on how gambling is provided” and “Population-based safer gambling/responsible gambling efforts.” Selective measures focus on age cohorts in a chapter entitled, “Targeted safer gambling campaigns for children, youth, and older adults.” The indicated measures are “Brief internet delivered interventions for gambling,” “Systems and tools that produced actual (‘hard’) barriers and limit access to funds,” and “Self-exclusion.” Since the quantity and quality of the evidence base varied by measure, appropriate review methods were selected to assess publications using a systematic, scoping, or narrative approach. Some measures offered consistent findings regarding the effectiveness of interventions and initiatives, while others were less clear. Unintended consequences were noted since it is important to be aware of unanticipated, negative consequences resulting from prevention and education activities. After reviewing the evidence, authors identified knowledge gaps that require further research, and provided guidance for how the findings could be used to enhance the prevention and education objective. The research evidence is supplemented by consultations with third sector charity representatives who design and implement gambling harm prevention and education programmes. Their insights and experiences enhance, support, or challenge the academic evidence base, and are shared in a separate chapter. Overall, research evidence is limited for many of the measures. Quality assessments suggest that improvements are needed to support policy decisions more fully. Still, opportunities exist to advance evidence-based policy for an effective gambling harm prevention and education plan.
