Abstract (sommario):
Given its role as a constant companion, the mobile phone has long been thought of as an extension of the self. However, the psychology of smartphone self-extension has received relatively little attention through empirical research. By explicating theorized facets of self-extension, we explore the dimensionality of smartphone self-extension and examine how established psychological orientations map onto these dimensions. Results provide support for a two-dimensional structure of self-extension. Specifically, we found that self-extension can be delineated on the extent to which the smartphone is viewed as (a) functional for personal goals and (b) integral to personal identity. Across two studies, habitual usage predicted the functionality dimension and problematic usage predicted the identity dimension. In addition, Study 2 revealed that the two dimensions of self-extension corresponded to different dimensions of smartphone vigilance. We discuss the importance of conceptualizing smartphone self-extension as a perceptual construct, as well as the challenges of measuring the psychological connection that exists – or is thought to exist – between self and phone.

Abstract (sommario):
The advancement of agriculture sector in one region cannot be separated from the role of agricultural extension in the region. To cover the deficiency of agricultural extension agents, self-supporting extension agents are recruited from farmers or private parties. This study aims to analyze the role of self-supporting instructors in improving farmer institutions and analyze factors related to the role of self-supporting extension agents in improving farmer institutions. This research was a qualitative descriptive study, and it was conducted in West Pasaman and Sijunjung Regency with a sample of 38 people. The results showed that self-supporting instructors play a significant role in improving farmer institutions; this is seen from 78% of self-supporting extension agents have a role in increasing farmer institutions. Factors related to the role of self-supporting extension agents in improving farmer institutions are (1) the age of agents, (2) the number of partners from farmer groups, and (3) the frequency of training attended by self-supporting extension agents. To increase the role of self-extension extension agents in the institutional development of farmers, it is recommended that institutions who manage the agricultural extension recruit self-supporting extension agents from the millennial generation and facilitate self-supporting extension agents to be able to participate in training related to farming in the agent's area of work.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper focuses on the blurring boundary between the “human self” and the smartphone, using interviews with 60 heavy smartphone users. The interview responses reveal three types of self-extension via the smartphone— functional extension, anthropomorphic extension, and ontological extension. Smartphone users assert that their phone has become an indispensable part of their self and thus influences their identity and sense of being in both positive and negative ways.

Singer, Mathew Kyle. "Self powered wrist extension orthosis". Thesis, University of Canterbury. Mechanical Engineering, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/1154.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
One of the most devastating effects of tetraplegia is the inability to grasp and manipulate everyday objects necessary to living an independent life. Currently surgery is widely accepted as the solution to improve hand functionality. However, surgery becomes difficult when the user has paralysed wrists as is the case with C5 tetraplegia. The aim of this research was to develop a solution which provided controlled wrist flexion and extension which, when combined with surgery, achieves a 'key pinch' grip. This particular grip is critically important for people with C5 tetraplegia as it is used for countless grasping activities, necessary on a day-to-day basis. A systematic design process was used to evolve the solution to provide controlled wrist flexion and extension. Concept brainstorming identified four alternative solutions which were evaluated to find the preferred concept. The chosen solution was called the Self Powered Wrist Extension Orthosis, more commonly referred to as the 'orthosis'. This concept contained a shoulder harness which provided both energy and control to the wrist harness, which in turn changed the wrist position. The orthosis was developed with the use of a mathematical model which theoretically predicted the functional performance by comparing the required force needed to move the wrist harness to the achievable force supplied by the user's shoulders. Using these parameters, the orthosis was optimized using the matlab Nelder-Mead algorithm which adjusted the wrist harness geometries to maximize the functional performance. A prototype was constructed and tested with the help of two participants who when combined, achieved an average of 18.5° of wrist rotation. The theoretical model however predicted an average range of motion of 28.4°. The discrepancy found between the theoretical and experimental result can be contributed to incorrect assumptions in the theoretical model. This included unaccounted friction and inaccurate modeling of the orthosis dynamics. The feedback from potential users of the orthosis was enthusiastic and encouraging especially towards the simplicity, usability and practicality of the design.

Starting from pervasive computing paradigm, we want to face the new system's requirements, concerning, mainly, self-organisation, situatedness and adaptivity, through the definition and execution of nature-inspired patterns. They are extracted by the study of dynamics in biological systems and we consider for their implementation the biochemical tuple spaces model. In particular, the aim of the thesis is to design and realize a first biochemical extension of TuCSoN (technology based on tuple spaces model) and, then, to verify its capabilities by means of a proper case study, that deals with local self-organisation and competition of services in an open and highly-dynamic environment.

Abstract (sommario):
As today’s web is filled with privacy-invasive third-party trackers, users are turning to privacy extensions to prevent their browsing habits from leaking. However, research has shown that privacy extensions can decrease website quality and even break meaningful functionality. Our research addresses this problem by performing automated repairs on Javascript code that has been broken by Privacy Badger, a heuristics-based privacy extension. First, we study how the use of Privacy Badger affects the prevalence of Javascript errors on 11 665 urls. We find errors caused by Privacy Badger on 758 (6.5%) urls. We also observe a 74% increase in Javascript errors, and a 27% increase in urls affected by Javascript errors when browsing with Privacy Badger. Using this data, we investigate how BikiniProxy, an automated HTML and Javascript rewriting proxy consisting of five self-healing strategies, performs on errors caused by Privacy Badger. Out of 751 web pages with errors caused by Privacy Badger, 215 (29%) had at least one such error healed by BikiniProxy. Additionally, we recognize a shortcoming of BikiniProxy’s line skipper strategy, and propose an improvement to it. Repairing web pages using our modified version of BikiniProxy reduces the number of errors on 12.9% more urls. Finally, we show that repairing errors using BikiniProxy can restore functionality that has been broken by Privacy Badger. But we can only detect such cases in two urls out of the hundreds repaired, which shows that the repair approach suffers from overfitting in our context. Our most important insight is that privacy extensions can break functionality without blocking any resource that the functionality is dependent on, and that these are the cases where BikiniProxy can restore the functionality.

Murray, Brittany Michelle. "The Role and Impact of Cooperative Extension in Diabetes Self-Management Education". UKnowledge, 2015. http://uknowledge.uky.edu/foodsci_etds/32.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Diabetes is increasing globally and nationally. Diabetes complications and costs can be reduced through modification of lifestyle risks and diabetes self-management education (DSME). The Cooperative Extension System (CES) is uniquely positioned to implement DSME. This study assessed the role and impact of the Cooperative Extension System (CES) in DSME. A survey was sent to CES professionals throughout the U.S. a total of 43 participants provided information on 73 DSME programs. Most participants were from the South (n=22, 51.16%) and Midwest (n=12, 27.91%) and most programs targeted adults with and at risk for type 2 diabetes. Most programs were developed and taught by registered dietitians and family and consumer science agents and were focused on healthy eating and cooking techniques. Few programs addressed medications, mental and physical health, influenza and pneumococcal vaccinations. Implementation challenges were related to recruitment, attrition, and funding and most suggestions for the future of CES in DSME were related to funding. CES has a wide reach in terms of DSME with over 29 states. Future CES efforts should target children with type 2 diabetes and should form/continue partnerships with health care professionals.

Walasek, Lukasz. "What determines the value of possessions? : empirical tests of the self-extension theory of ownership". Thesis, University of Essex, 2013. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.654584.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Owners tend to overvalue possessions relative to non-owners: a phenomenon known as the endowment effect. Over the years, many theories have been put forward in order to account for this robust disparity between owners' willingness to accept (WT A) and non-owners' willingness to pay (WTP). One possible explanation of the endowment effect is that owners develop feelings of ownership towards their possession, growing emotionally attached to what they own. A potential unifying theoretical framework that can explain this relation is the self-extension model of psychological ownership formulated by Russell Belk (1988). Accordingly, objects are incorporated into one's self-definition in order to fulfill the basic psychological needs of having a coherent and continuous sense of identity, sense of belonging as well as feelings of efficacy and effectance. The processes by which objects are incorporated into our self include: object appropriation (touch and use), getting to know one's possession (familiarity and knowledge) and active investment of the self in the object (creation). All of these premises were tested experimentally across 9 studies, presented in Manuscripts 1, 2 and 3. Overall, modest evidence was accumulated in favor of the proposition that feelings of ownership develop in order to satisfy psychological needs outlined by the self-extension model. Also moderate support was found to suggest that touch, use and knowledge influence subjective valuations of owners and non-owners. Only the implications of object creation were in line with the predictions of the self-extension framework. In manuscript 4, two different explanations for the endowment effects for risky assets were investigated: misperception of probability and value-uncertainty. Results were inconsistent with the former but supported the latter, showing that even if the representation of an asset is the same between owners and non-owners, higher uncertainty about its value increases the magnitude of the endowment effect.

CAPES
The numerous possibilities for extension and construction of the self derived from other forms of consumption that don’t involve ownership are a reality arising from the Digital and Access Ages. Therein, it highlights the Collaborative Consumption, described as a practice where clients access a good with the help of technology in exchange for a small amount. The emphasis of this thesis focuses on the understanding of this extension/construction of the self in the Collaborative Consumption, represented here by the Bike PE project, first intercity system of bike sharing in Brazil. The aspects that motivated the choice of this subject are directly related to the lack of studies regarding the extent of identity in new consumption configurations. Thus, the constructs taken as the theoretical basis of this thesis were the self, Access and Digital Ages and Collaborative Consumption. This is a basic qualitative research that used to collect data the natural, direct and structured observation and the non-structured individual interview. The observations were effected in nine stations where bicycles are and the interviews were conducted with 24 users of Bike PE. The collected data were analyzed according to Semantics and Pragmatics Analysis of Conversation. The results showed that the extension of the self in bike-sharing practice occurs through the meaning of the use of good accessed. This use by the experience of pedaling strengthens and brings up the idea of citizenship, as well as providing a sense of belonging and connectivity also helping to build the self by acting as an instrument of ideological, social, economic, cultural and sustainable change for people. The idea of ownership, however, is not ruled out. Users want or even have a bicycle, leading to understanding that access and ownership can be consumed concurrently.

Nachit, Oussama. "Mieux comprendre l'EXPansion et l'EXTension de soi du consommateur : une application à un objet connecté". Electronic Thesis or Diss., Université de Montpellier (2022-....), 2024. http://www.theses.fr/2024UMOND008.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
In a technologically advanced world where connected objects become a part of our personal identity, this thesis examines the relationships between individuals and their smartwatches through the prisms of self-EXPansion (Aron and Aron, 1986) and self-EXTension (Belk, 1988). This research highlights the complex and rich manner in which individuals integrate these devices into their self-concept, thus modulating their attachment and intention to continue using these technologies. Therefore, the central problem of this doctoral work is articulated as follows: "What are the relationships maintained by individuals with their smartwatch via self-EXPansion and self-EXTension, and the impact of these processes on the attachment and continued use of these watches?" This question led to a structured investigation around four specific research questions that seek to explore the manifestations of these psychological processes in the context of interactions with a smartwatch. This research adopts a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative analyses to detail the experiences of users with their smartwatches, followed by two quantitative studies to measure the impact of purchase motivations and watch attributes on self-EXPansion and self-EXTension. The methods used validated the hypothetical relationships between the theoretical constructs and user behaviors. The findings reveal that smartwatches are perceived not only as functional tools but also as essential elements of the users' identity. The results show that agentic purchase motivations and the attributes of the watch directly impact self-EXPansion, which in turn facilitates self-EXTension, leading to greater attachment and a reinforced intention to continue using the watch. These results underscore the sequentiality of the self-EXPansion and self-EXTension processes in the formation of attachment to connected objects. The implications of this research are significant for manufacturers of smartwatches, and the multiple theoretical contributions fit into the literature on self-EXPansion and self-EXTension.The thesis acknowledges the limitations related to the focus on smartwatches and suggests broadening the analysis to other wearable technologies to examine whether the findings generalize to other devices

Tian, Feng. "On commutativity of unbounded operators in Hilbert space". Diss., University of Iowa, 2011. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/1095.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
We study several unbounded operators with view to extending von Neumann's theory of deficiency indices for single Hermitian operators with dense domain in Hilbert space. If the operators are non-commuting, the problems are difficult, but special cases may be understood with the use representation theory. We will further study the partial derivative operators in the coordinate directions on the L2 space on various covering surfaces of the punctured plane. The operators are defined on the common dense domain of C∞ functions with compact support, and they separately are essentially selfadjoint, but the unique selfadjoint extensions will be non-commuting. This problem is of a geometric flavor, and we study an index formulation for its solution. The applications include the study of vector fields, the theory of Dirichlet problems for second order partial differential operators (PDOs), Sturm-Liouville problems, H.Weyl's limit-point/limit-circle theory, Schrödinger equations, and more.

Abstract (sommario):
The volume collects eight essays on Italian politics, economics, law and culture during Fascism. Several of the writings highlight the role played by important personalities, some attached to the regime, such as Guido Jung or Alberto Beneduce, some at the opposition, as Luigi Sturzo and Alcide De Gasperi. Other essays focus on the relationship between fascism and scholars of law as Costantino Mortati and Vezio Crisafulli, or economists such as Vilfredo Pareto and Maffeo Pantaleoni. Lastly, three writings deal, respectively, with the dissolution of the Masonic lodges in 1925, the extension of the legal institute of self defense to the protection of property, and, finally, the problems incurred by Italy between the 1920s and 1930s in repaying the debts contracted during the First World War.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper describes the effects of a composite coupled blade spar on the performance of a slowed RPM helicopter rotor in high speed edgewise flight. This study expands upon previous work that showed that antisymmetric composite coupling in the spar of a UH-60A-like rotor can provide a significant increase in the lift to drag ratio of a rotor when the RPM is reduced. The current analysis was performed using a full 3-D FEA based aeroelastic computational structural dynamics (CSD) solver, X3D, now with the inclusion of a freewake aerodynamics model. This was validated using existing UH-60A test data for high advance ratios. The current analysis shows that a blade with a nominal composite coupling can provide a maximum increase in the lift to drag ratio of approximately 1.3 at 85% of the nominal RPM (NR) of 27 rad/s and that hygrothermally stable layups do not degrade the rotor performance. However, close study of the strain in the rotor showed that a rotor with an extension-torsion coupled composite spar would unlikely be feasible at 27 rad/s as the axial strains felt by the rotor around the azimuth often exceed the allowable tensile strain of 6000 με. The details of what can be done to reduce the axial strain at all rotational speeds is part of an ongoing investigation.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper describes the effects of a composite coupled blade spar on the performance of a slowed RPM helicopter rotor in high speed edgewise flight. A UH-60A-like rotor blade was chosen as a baseline for this study as it is the only production-level rotor optimized for hover that has been tested at high advance ratios up to 1.0. The analysis was performed using a full 3-D FEA based aeroelastic computational structural dynamics (CSD) solver, X3D. This type of analysis allows for the design of novel rotors and discrete/segmented spanwise variation of structural properties. For this paper the rotor spar was re-designed using a carbon fiber reinforced composite such that at 100% rotational speed the hover twist of the original UH-60 blade could be recovered while at slower rotational speeds the blade was automatically untwisted by up to 4-10 degrees (in vacuum) near the tip depending on the rotor speed. Thus the rotor carried different twists in hover and in high advance ratio flights. Preliminary investigations were conducted with simple aerodynamics (blade element with airfoil tables including shank drag) for different composite layup orientations, volume fractions, and radial segments. The current analysis show that significant performance (lift to drag ratio) enhancements of the rotor is possible for both full-span and half-span segmented layups of coupled composite spar at low blade loading. The detailed causes behind the observed performance benefits are part of ongoing investigation.

Panopoulou, Giota, e Ariadna García Prado. Enrolling the Self-Employed in Mandatory Health Insurance in Colombia. Inter-American Development Bank, dicembre 2008. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0008599.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The introduction of mandatory health insurance in developing countries is often questioned because of the difficulties in enrolling self-employed workers, who represent a segment of the labor force that is increasing in size. Partial population coverage, coupled with adverse selection effects, raises serious concerns about the financial viability of social health insurance schemes. Despite these difficulties, an increasing number of developing countries have implemented social health insurance schemes with the aim of attaining universal health coverage and improving access to health services. In Colombia, major health sector reform was launched in 1993 with the extension of mandatory social health insurance as its cornerstone. In this paper, we assess the impact that Colombia¿s health sector reform had on the enrollment of self-employed workers in the social health insurance scheme. We use two national-level Living Standards Measurement Surveys conducted in Colombia in 1997 and 2003, respectively, and find that health insurance enrollment rates among the self-employed increased considerably between the two time periods, although evidence of adverse selection observed in 1997 continued to be present in 2003. We identify several factors that may explain the change in these enrollment patterns, and we discuss measures to combat adverse selection.

Abstract (sommario):
This study seeks to determine the impact on female labor outcomes of the amendment to the Colombian labor law that extended maternity leave from 12 to 14 weeks (Law 1468 of July 2011). To identify this impact, labor market outcomes of two groups of women with different fertility rates are compared. The study finds evidence that as a result of the extension of the maternity leave period, women in the high-fertility age group experience an increase in inactivity rates, informality, and self-employment. The study points to the need for a redesign of maternity protection policy that would enable the economic and social costs of bearing children to be shared by both parents and that may generate social change regarding the importance of paternal care.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Digital financial inclusion is important to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. Digital financial tools, such as mobile money, can, in principle, be used by anyone with a cell phone. Mobile money and services surrounding mobile money can help reduce poverty by helping increase remittances from labour migrants, helping households to weather negative shocks to income, and encouraging investments such as in farms or in self-employment activities. An extension of this logic is that, in refugee hosting areas, digital financial inclusion through mobile money can potentially play a role in improving the economic inclusion of refugees. This evidence brief shares findings from a project developing a mobile money system in the Somali region of Ethiopia and discusses ways that policies can help catalyse the use of mobile money in such regions.

Horrocks, Ian, Ulrike Sattler e Stephan Tobies. A Description Logic with Transitive and Converse Roles, Role Hierarchies and Qualifying Number Restrictions. Aachen University of Technology, 1999. http://dx.doi.org/10.25368/2022.94.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
As widely argued [HG97; Sat96], transitive roles play an important role in the adequate representation of aggregated objects: they allow these objects to be described by referring to their parts without specifying a level of decomposition. In [HG97], the Description Logic (DL) ALCHR+ is presented, which extends ALC with transitive roles and a role hierarchy. It is argued in [Sat98] that ALCHR+ is well-suited to the representation of aggregated objects in applications that require various part-whole relations to be distinguished, some of which are transitive. However, ALCHR+ allows neither the description of parts by means of the whole to which they belong, or vice versa. To overcome this limitation, we present the DL SHI which allows the use of, for example, has part as well as is part of. To achieve this, ALCHR+ was extended with inverse roles. It could be argued that, instead of defining yet another DL, one could make use of the results presented in [DL96] and use ALC extended with role expressions which include transitive closure and inverse operators. The reason for not proceeding like this is the fact that transitive roles can be implemented more efficiently than the transitive closure of roles (see [HG97]), although they lead to the same complexity class (ExpTime-hard) when added, together with role hierarchies, to ALC. Furthermore, it is still an open question whether the transitive closure of roles together with inverse roles necessitates the use of the cut rule [DM98], and this rule leads to an algorithm with very bad behaviour. We will present an algorithm for SHI without such a rule. Furthermore, we enrich the language with functional restrictions and, finally, with qualifying number restrictions. We give sound and complete decision proceduresfor the resulting logics that are derived from the initial algorithm for SHI. The structure of this report is as follows: In Section 2, we introduce the DL SI and present a tableaux algorithm for satisfiability (and subsumption) of SI-concepts—in another report [HST98] we prove that this algorithm can be refined to run in polynomial space. In Section 3 we add role hierarchies to SI and show how the algorithm can be modified to handle this extension appropriately. Please note that this logic, namely SHI, allows for the internalisation of general concept inclusion axioms, one of the most general form of terminological axioms. In Section 4 we augment SHI with functional restrictions and, using the so-called pairwise-blocking technique, the algorithm can be adapted to this extension as well. Finally, in Section 5, we show that standard techniques for handling qualifying number restrictions [HB91;BBH96] together with the techniques described in previous sections can be used to decide satisfiability and subsumption for SHIQ, namely ALC extended with transitive and inverse roles, role hierarchies, and qualifying number restrictions. Although Section 5 heavily depends on the previous sections, we have made it self-contained, i.e. it contains all necessary definitions and proofs from scratch, for a better readability. Building on the previous sections, Section 6 presents an algorithm that decides the satisfiability of SHIQ-ABoxes.

Investigating the feasibility and acceptability of Sayana® Press self-injection in Ghana. Population Council, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.31899/sbsr2018.1001.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
At the request of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), the Evidence Project, through the Population Council and with funding from USAID/Ghana, is studying the feasibility and acceptability of Sayana® Press self-injection, and by extension, informing its introduction in Ghana. The primary objectives of the seven-month study are to assess the feasibility of introducing Sayana® Press self-injection and its acceptability among both health workers and injectable clients. Results from the study are expected to inform the national strategy, including procurement and scale-up of Sayana® Press in the public and private sectors. | The Ghana Health Service has a strong commitment to task shifting to accelerate access to modern contraceptive methods. GHS’s commitment to engaging all relevant stakeholders in the public, private and NGOs sectors in the study process provides an excellent model for maximizing research utilization.
