PurposeThis paper aims to examine the notion of escape, which is central to the consumer experience literature, yet remains largely undertheorized. By surfacing the multi-dimensionality of escape, the authors develop a more fine-grained conceptualization of this notion. In addition, this work helps shed new light on past consumer research findings that mobilize the notion of escape.Design/methodology/approachThe paper is based on a review and interpretation of literature referring to the notion of escape in consumer research.FindingsThis paper’s first contribution is to extend the concept of escape based on the Turnerian framework of structure/anti-structure, by establishing a key difference between objects to “escape from” and the major themes of “escape into”. A second contribution is to identify other forms of escape that are mundane, restorative and warlike, and that mobilize the self in different ways.Practical implicationsThe paper provides a more precise conceptualization of escape to motivate further research on this particularly important concept for understanding consumer experience.Social implicationsEscape from one’s own self has become an important feature of contemporary life. Consumer experiences may be ways of crafting identities, but they also form the means of escaping the pressures that come with the burdens of identity.Originality/valueThis paper goes beyond past research on escape by identifying other types of escapes, which have not really been theorized in consumer research. The authors especially note the importance of ephemeral moments where people temporarily suspend their reflexive self, which the authors conceive as a new type of escape route.

Abstract (sommario):

Micro/nanoswimmers convert diverse energy sources into directional movement, demonstrating significant promise for biomedical and environmental applications, many of which involve complex, tortuous, or crowded environments. Here, we investigated the transport behavior of self-propelled catalytic Janus particles in a complex interconnected porous void space, where the rate-determining step involves the escape from a cavity and translocation through holes to adjacent cavities. Surprisingly, self-propelled nanoswimmers escaped from cavities more than 20× faster than passive (Brownian) particles, despite the fact that the mobility of nanoswimmers was less than 2× greater than that of passive particles in unconfined bulk liquid. Combining experimental measurements, Monte Carlo simulations, and theoretical calculations, we found that the escape of nanoswimmers was enhanced by nuanced secondary effects of self-propulsion which were amplified in confined environments. In particular, active escape was facilitated by anomalously rapid confined short-time mobility, highly efficient surface-mediated searching for holes, and the effective abolition of entropic and/or electrostatic barriers at the exit hole regions by propulsion forces. The latter mechanism converted the escape process from barrier-limited to search-limited. These findings provide general and important insights into micro/nanoswimmer mobility in complex environments.

With the disadvantages of complex structure, complicated operation and power control, the application of existing high-building escape device are restricted. A novel high-building escape device is designed based on TRIZ theory, which has the advantages of simple structure, easy operation and without electric or other energy. With the transformation of closed-loop mechanism, the gravity of escape person generate the resistance preventing the rapid drop of escape person. The closed-loop mechanism consists of driving shaft, feedback shaft, drving gear, feedback gear and rope. One end of the rope is winded around the driving shaft, and another end is tied with escape person. With the reduction of layers number of rope, the pressure angle between feedback shaft and rope increase, which cause the raise of resistance and the decrease of landing velocity of escape person. Simulation and experiment show that the designed escape device is effective and safety.

Purpose Commodification doubles self and work, life and object, uniqueness and standardization and art and management. For the artist, the unicity, beauty, inspiration and creativity of art is doubled in the sale, marketing, display, distribution and mass production of “art works”. Making art is intimate, personal and individual; selling art requires public display, pleasing the all important customer(s) and dealing with many sorts of in-betweens. What commodification is on the artist/art work level is doubling on the I/me, self/persona, private/public and in-group/out-group level. This paper aims to examine the commodification and doubling in the case of the Gee’s Bend quilt makers. The quilts foreshadowed the modernist aesthetic and are of the highest aesthetic quality. But, they were made in a traditional rural society by very poor, uneducated black women. The quilts were not made to be sold but were dedicated to familial remembrance and to immediate aesthetic pleasure. But now that they are on display: is escape from commodification possible? Design/methodology/approach Reprint for special issue. Findings Doubling, in the original article below, was tendentious but artistically and politically to be overcome; doubling currently seems much more ominous, omnipresent and out of control. Signifyin(g) has become bomb throwing. Present day doubling apparently produces terror and not just commodification. Originality/value Invited for publication.

Abstract The purpose of this study was to investigate college students on their speed of performing different types of self-defense skills commonly taught in American university self-defense courses. The results indicated that close defense skills and distance punches are faster than distance kicks in most single skills or combination skills. Women can do most skills as fast as men. The results also indicated that all kicks with back-foot are slower than kicks with front-foot in distance defense. Women need 2.42- 6.12 seconds to escape from all 20 holds, while men need 1.14-5.54 seconds for people who successfully escaped. Escaping from different holds is not as difficult as what most people think. After proper learning and practice, a majority of college women and men can escape from many holds in 1-6 seconds.

Lifelines are used to aid self-escape of underground miners, but they are difficult to find in low-visibility conditions of smoke, therefore a self-illuminating lifeline could facilitate miners in locating the lifeline. The detection distance, colour recognition, and miss rate for 10 subjects were determined for red-, green- and blue-lighted diffuse fibre-optic cables, used to create a lighted lifeline, and a traditional rope lifeline in a smoked-filled environment. The testing was conducted with and without a cap lamp. The use of a cap lamp resulted in all cases being undetected in 98.3% of trials. With the cap lamp off, there was no significant difference in the detection distance for blue- and green-lighted fibres; however, the miss rate for the green-lighted fibre was slightly higher. The red-lighted fibre was not detected in 93.3% of trials. The green- and blue-lighted fibres enabled the best visual performance, but subjects had difficulty correctly identifying the colour of the fibre. The lighted fibre-optic cable appears to have merit for improving self-escape from underground mines, and may have other mining and non-mining applications that include improving self-escape visibility.

In this letter, self-absorption is discussed using the concept of escape factor. The calculation method of the escape factor for spherical geometry plasma is discussed. For the spherical geometry, the escape factors Λ(r) at any position r in a spherical geometry plasma (with the radius R) for Lorentzian and Holtsmarkian profiles are calculated, and a general expression is obtained. As an example, for the sodium 330.3 nm resonance line, the total radiance and the real radiance are calculated, and the self-absorption for the resonance line is discussed. This discussion will be useful for the study of the relationship of escape factor and the self-absorption of spectral lines for any geometries.

We study the effect of self-oscillation on the escape dynamics of classical and quantum open systems by employing the system-plus-environment-plus-interaction model. For a damped free particle (system) with memory kernel function expressed by Zwanzig (J. Stat. Phys. 9, 215 (1973)), which is originated from a harmonic oscillator bath (environment) of Debye type with cut-off frequency wd, ergodicity breakdown is found because the velocity autocorrelation function oscillates in cosine function for asymptotic time. The steady escape rate of such a self-oscillated system from a metastable potential exhibits nonmonotonic dependence on wd, which denotes that there is an optimal cut-off frequency makes it maximal. Comparing results in classical and quantum regimes, the steady escape rate of a quantum open system reduces to a classical one with wd decreasing gradually, and quantum fluctuation indeed enhances the steady escape rate. The effect of a finite number of uncoupled harmonic oscillators N on the escape dynamics of a classical open system is also discussed.

Sensation seeking has been widely studied when investigating individual differences in the propensity for taking risks. However, risk taking can serve many different goals beyond the simple management of physiological arousal. The present study is an investigation of affect self-regulation as a predictor of risk-taking behaviors in high-risk sport. Risk-taking behaviors, negative affectivity, escape self-awareness strategy, and sensation seeking data were obtained from 265 high-risk sportsmen. Moderated hierarchical regression analysis revealed significant main and interaction effects of negative affectivity and escape self-awareness strategy in predicting risk-taking behaviors: high-risk sportsmen’s negative affectivity leads them to adopt risk-taking behaviors only if they also use escape self-awareness strategy. Furthermore, the affective model remained significant when controlling for sensation seeking. The present study contributes to an in-depth understanding of risk taking in high-risk sport.

Disability sports organizations could benefit from a better understanding of the factors leading individuals with disabilities to participate in sport. This study explored relationships among four sources of motivation (i.e., escape, self-esteem enhancement, self-improvement, and social interaction) and six forms of social support (i.e., emotional challenge, emotional support, listening support, reality confirmation, task appreciation, and task challenge) among 133 male and 60 female wheelchair athletes, ages 13–34 years. Differences in motivation and social support needs were examined according to athletes’ gender, age, playing level, skill level, years of participation, and future playing intentions. Results indicated that males were more motivated than females were by desire for escape and that long-term participants were more motivated than novices were by self-esteem enhancement. Escape, self-improvement, and social interaction were stronger motivators for high school athletes than for collegiate athletes. Importance of social support types differed according to skill level, playing level, years played, and future playing intentions.

Learned helplessness occurs when one is unable to escape from a painful or aversive experience is unable to be escaped from (Hiroto & Seligman, 1975). The organism learns that it is helpless in and accepts its loss of control in those situations. This point is taken into account to explain the behavioural constellation of deprivation (BCD), in which one finds it difficult to escape from poverty. A new philosophy of economy is gradually emerging in the form of the so-called Economía Popular y Solidaria (popular and solidarity economy [PSE]). In this economical perspective, all members of companies are equally stockholders and investors so that these initiatives carry the implication that the democratisation process now moves from the political dimension to the economic arena. The democracy practiced in those businesses enables individuals to develop high levels of self-esteem and fosters a sense of belonging to the group.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to use the rise of emerging-market multinationals as a vehicle to explore how a firm’s country of origin influences its internationalization. Design/methodology/approach This paper is a conceptual paper. Findings We argue that the home country’s institutional and economic underdevelopment can influence the internationalization of firms in two ways. First, emerging-market firms may leverage innovations made at home to cope with underdeveloped institutions or economic backwardness to gain a competitive advantage abroad, especially in other emerging markets; We call this innovation-based internationalization. Second, they may expand into countries that are more developed or have better institutions to escape weaknesses on these fronts at home; we call this escape-based internationalization. Research limitations/implications Comparative disadvantages influence the internationalization of the firm differently from comparative advantage, as it forces the firm to actively upgrade its firm-specific advantage and internationalize. Practical implications We explain two drivers of internationalization that managers operating in emerging markets can consider when facing disadvantages in their home countries and follow several strategies, namely, trickle-up innovation, self-reliant innovation, improvisation management, self-reliance management, technological escape, marketing escape, institutional escape and discriminatory escape. Originality/value We explain how a firm’s home country’s comparative disadvantage, not just its comparative advantage, can spur firms its internationalization.

Is there escape from a self-help system? Realists say no. They assume states are egoistic actors in anarchy; this means states must either look out for themselves or risk destruction: structure generates a self-help system. Constructivists think escape is possible. Because identities are made, not given, we should not make a priori assumptions of state egoism: process generates self-help. Process could also generate an other-help security system. This article introduces a third approach that uses social identity theory to argue that interstate relations are inherently competitive. Thus, for cognitive and motivated—rather than structural or social—reasons, competition, which can be coercive or cooperative, characterizes international politics.

For the current lack of convenient, reliable and safe lifting of the fire escape equipment, design a device along the rope, using functions with self-locking worm gear structure. Then assess the strength of the contact state and reliability of the structure, use ANSYS to analysis the contact stress and dynamic characteristics. Finally, improve the winch device design to increase the safety factor. The check calculation and experiments showed that the device can be safely hoisting the target.

The work of children’s liberationists have been long been critiqued for pushing the parameters of rights discourse too far; specifically, by suggesting that there are no significant differences between children and adults, including their ability for self-determination. John Holt’s 1974 text, Escape from Childhood, is one such work which was deemed highly controversial for its time. This article uses Holt’s Escape from Childhood as an overarching framework against which to examine the current state of play on children’s rights as explicated through the Convention on the Rights of the Child. It suggests that whilst Holt has often been critiqued for being too radical, in the context of current children’s rights discourse, Holt’s visioning is not as radical as it might first appear.
