The research was motivated from the discussions between industry and regulatory bodies concerning the dispersion of highly acidic discharges from exhaust gas scrubbers on ships into seawater. The industrial problem is simplified in an analytical model for acidic jets and plumes, which is then validated through an experimental study. Abstract This report discusses the dealloying (denickelification) of 70-30 cupronickel (UNS C 71500) heat exchanger tubing in stagnant seawater. Heat exchanger tubing from a naval vessel exposed to stagnant seawater was examined. The results include metallographic, scanning electron microscope, and X-ray spectrographic analyses supporting the conclusion that the dealloying occurred by a dissolution followed by redeposition of copper process.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract The purpose of the work is to investigate the dual effect of cathodic protection regarding fatigue of steel in seawater. Based on crack growth rate tests carried out under various conditions, the detrimental effect of hydrogen embrittlement is detected. Also the good effect of cathodic protection is seen. Results from tests in air are compared with tests under free corrosion and under cathodic protection at various R- ratios and loading frequencies. Included are tests under pulsed cathodic protection where the cathodic current is switched on and off during each mechanical load cycle.
