Testo completoThroughout history, wondrous discoveries of science, like great pieces of music, have often come about through extraordinary feats of creativity, informed by deep rational thought yet not limited by it. Like science, music composition requires a mastery of its own technical features (instrumentation, orchestration, harmony, counterpoint, etc.), but neither music nor science can flourish when too much emphasis is placed upon the mechanical and not enough on the imagination. Composers have sometimes turned to mathematics as a tool for generating art though the systematization of musical elements. However, music often suffers from the conscious attempt by composers to bring it closer to the world of science and math through the serialization of musical material. This does not mean that mathematics and science do not play an important part in music of great expression. To be sure, composers have used simple mathematical concepts to discuss, analyze, and create music at every stage, whether consciously or unconsciously, since the beginning of Western music. These ideas are at the very heart of the great music of previous centuries, even if we celebrate those works more for their intrinsic beauty than their rational mechanics. It is the inventiveness and creativity that we find easy to value in music, but the science behind it also makes its creation possible. My symphony pays tribute to the marriage of creativity, not process, in scientific and musical thought, using the words of scientists and mathematicians as poetic texts, which generate musical imagery. I have chosen a series of quotations by notable scientists and mathematicians throughout history, which serve as textual introductions for each movement of the six-movement, approximately forty-five minute orchestral symphony. Each quotation makes reference to a specific scientific or mathematical discovery of its writer, or displays an aspect of his philosophy. The ideas expressed in the quotations serve as abstract inspiration and suggest musical imagery for each respective movement.

Testo completoThis thesis establish the requirements for a searchable, on-line archive for music in the form of audio, video and sheet music, and looks at possible ways to design such a system. The thesis describes and compare existing systems to assess possibilities for reuse. Special attention is given to issues regarding the digital representation of sheet music. From interviews and evaluation of existing systems requirements for a digital music archive are derived. Furthermore, possible architectures are described. An access management model is developed that support many different use areas. These areas include a public database of music open for public contribution and use, a web-shop function where items in the archive can be charged for, publishing of music and science reports with audio samples, and smallscale collaboration on producing collective documents. All these applications plus other should be possible using the model. Institutions, organizations or private persons may use this thesis as a design for their digital music archive.

Testo completoSince August 2008, the newly commissioned Surface Warfare Officer (SWO) has been trained for SWO qualification through the INTRO/ASAT program. Through this program, USNA and NROTC officers check onto their first ship and subsequently attend a five-week introductory course given by the Afloat Training Group (ATG) located in one of the Fleet Concentration Areas, and OCS officers attend the course in Newport, RI. Following this training, they report to their ship for on-the-job training (OJT). Computer Based Training (CBT) discs are available to use as references. About 17 months following commissioning, the officer then reports to Surface Warfare Officer School (SWOS) for three weeks of Advanced Shiphandling and Tactics (ASAT) training. Upon arrival at ASAT, the officer is administered the SWO Fundamentals exam, designed to measure knowledge and retention of information covered during the OJT period. This thesis analyzes the SWO Fundamentals exam scores from 2007 to 2010 to determine which demographic and background variables affect a student's success and failure rates on the exam. Significant differences were found in gender, race, commissioning source, ship type, homeport, and class year.

Testo completoImproving science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education has become a national priority and the call to modernize secondary science has been heard. A Physics First (PF) program with the curriculum sequence of physics, chemistry, and biology (PCB) driven by inquiry- and project-based learning offers a viable alternative to the traditional curricular sequence (BCP) and methods of teaching, but requires more empirical evidence. This study determined impact of a PF program (PF-PCB) on math achievement (SAT math scores) after the first two cohorts of students completed the PF-PCB program at Matteo Ricci High School (MRHS) and provided more quantitative data to inform the PF debate and advance secondary science education. Statistical analysis (ANCOVA) determined the influence of covariates and revealed that PF-PCB program had a significant (p < .05) impact on SAT math scores in the second cohort at MRHS. Statistically adjusted, the SAT math means for PF students were 21.4 points higher than their non-PF counterparts when controlling for prior math achievement (HSTP math), socioeconomic status (SES), and ethnicity/race.

Brighton, Hadley. "Comparison of patients with high pain scores with low-moderate pain scores in pediatric patients with sickle cell disease". Thesis, Boston University, 2013. https://hdl.handle.net/2144/12059.
Testo completoObjective: To better understand the characteristics of patients with persistently high pain scores (mean ≥ 7) as compared to those with persistently low to moderate pain scores (mean ≤ 6). Design: This study was a retrospective chart review that compares high pain patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) and low-moderate pain patients with SCD that were admitted between 2010- 2011. Each chart was reviewed for information relating to demographics, location of pain, clinical course, school progress and family structure. Any numerical measures were compared using t- tests to assess whether differences in mean values were of significance. Results: High pain admissions showed no significant differences in BMI or hemoglobin levels at admission from low-moderate pain admissions. (p= 0.163 and p=0.424, respectively). Mean length of stay (p=0.048) and total length of stay within the two-year period (p=0.002) was significantly greater in high pain admissions. Patients in both groups had similar clinical courses, co-morbidities, long-term medications, hydroxyurea compliance, family structure and school progress. Discussion: Although some factors of high pain patients differed from low pain patients, these differences do not warrant any changes in the form of care for one particular group. Conclusion: Development of a method of intervention that can be administered early in order to decrease the number of pain crises would prove to be a beneficial use of resources. The use of a pain tool specific to SCD could help to standardize pain scores within this population.
