This article analyses the impact of three demographic factors on student attendance 0ver a three-year population level statistical analysis of student attendance rates in Queensland (Australia) state secondary schools. Whole school attendance rates were mapped against the demographic factors of schools’ Index of Community Socio-Educational Advantage (ICSEA) values, proportion of Indigenous students within the school, and school population size as independent variables to identify which schools recorded the highest student attendance as measured by proportion of students with more than 95 per cent average attendance across the years 2014-2016. The geographic and demographic profile of these schools were then assessed to guide direction for future research. The data from this sample of schools indicates no significant relationship between high levels of student attendance and the three independent variables. Subsequent analysis of school location resulted in identification of a significant number of schools in rural locations attaining excellent attendance rates against both study sample schools and state benchmarks. It is evident that several schools have successfully navigated what might be considered challenging school demography to attain higher than average attendance rates. Despite the age of this data, no significant system-wide attendance improvement is presently evident, and the same conditions of challenge remain for schools. The findings suggest a need for a more forensic approach to analysis of school climate and culture to determine factors contributing to student attendance. The data from this sample of schools indicates no significant relationship between high levels of student attendance and the three independent variables, challenging long held assumptions that low socio-economic status and high proportion of indigeneity are significant causal factors for low rates of school attendance. Subsequent analysis of school location resulted in identification of a significant number of schools in rural locations attaining excellent attendance outcomes against both study sample schools and state benchmarks. It is concluded that rather than relying on traditional stereotypes of school demography influencing perception of student attendance patterns, educators must adopt a more forensic approach to analysis of their school climate and culture to determine contributing factors to student attendance excellence. ICSEA is a scale that applies a numerical value to schools in Australia determined by the level of educational advantage experienced by students in the school. ICSEA considers parental occupations, parental level of education, school geographical location and the proportion of indigenous students in the school. An ICSEA of 1000 is the average benchmark value (ACARA, 2014)

Schools play an important role in development of children and regular attendance in school helps in academic achievement, well being, self-esteem of children. This research studied 242 students for their academic achievement and their attendance in school. The results show that attendance in school is positively correlated with academic achievement. Key words: School attendance, academic achievement, School going adolescents. Schools play an important role in overall development of children and adolescents. Schools have been sites for resilience oriented programming because of the easy access they provide to youth and are the link between academic success, school engagement and other child development goals like well-being, self-esteem and self-efficacy (Ungar et al 2004). Research shows that attendance in school is an important factor in student achievement. Attendance in classrooms and in schools ensures continuity in the students learning process. When a student is absent from class whether unexcused or excused, it has an adverse effect on their academic performance and academic achievement. To understand the correlation between academic achievement and attendance, a study was carried out on school-enrolled adolescent girls and boys in schools across Chandigarh.

This study uses the Pakistan Rural Household Survey 2004-5 (PRHS), a rich set of households and school data, to examine parents’ schooling decision in rural Pakistan. Nested logit regressions are used to quantify the determinants of child school attendance. The analysis confirms that the greater the number of schools (public or private) in the local communities the higher is the attendance. Lower school attendance of boys seems to be the outcome of lower school quality more than it is for girls. A marginal increase in school quality correlates with increased school attendance in government schools more than in private schools. Nearly all school quality variables including control for number of schools in a community stand insignificant for girls. This shows that other factors might be of more importance than school quality of local schools for girl’s low attendance in rural Pakistan. Besides, parental education, especially mother’s education, and household income have strong positive impact on child school attendance. The greater the number of children in the household the lower is the child school attendance. Credit constraint seems not to be problematic as the estimated effect is statistically insignificant. Context Despite the recent emphasis on public school choice, more than four-fifths of public school students still attend the traditional school to which they are assigned (NCES CCD, 2013), making attendance zone boundaries critical and fercely contested determinants of educational opportunity. Historical and anecdotal evidence suggests that attendance zone boundaries are not “accidents of geography,” but have been “gerrymandered” into irregular shapes in ways that alter patterns of student attendance. However, no empirical evidence has directly examined the issue of attendance zone gerrymandering. Purpose of Study Drawing on the literature on electoral gerrymandering, we outline a framework for conceptualizing and measuring educational gerrymandering. Using geospatial techniques, we then provide initial empirical evidence on the gerrymandering of school attendance zones and the variation in gerrymandering across geographic and demographic contexts. Research Design We analyze the boundaries of a large national sample of 23,945 school attendance zones obtained from the School Attendance Boundary Information System (SABINS). For each attendance zone, we compute complementary measures assessing two dimensions of gerrymandering: (1) dispersion, or the elongation of the area of a boundary; and (2) indentation, or the irregularity of the perimeter of a boundary. Results Overall, we find that attendance zones are highly gerrymandered—nearly as much as legislative districts—and are becoming more gerrymandered over time. Findings underscore the racial and, to a lesser extent, socioeconomic character of gerrymandering, which is particularly acute in Whiter and more affluent schools and in areas experiencing rapid racial change. Conclusions The gerrymandering of school attendance zones has significant implications for students and schools. Gerrymandering alters patterns of attendance and, thereby, student access to educational opportunity and resources, by “zoning out” certain students living closer to schools while “zoning in” others living farther away. Gerrymandered boundaries also hold the potential to significantly alter the racial and ethnic composition of schools and may serve as a mechanism of segregation. In addition, gerrymandered attendance zones are inherently inefficient and may impose additional transportation costs on students and districts. We conclude with implications for state and federal policy.

State Vocational High School 1 Pantai Labu is a vocational school located on Jl.Pasar XII Desa Durian. The student attendance system still uses it manually in the form of sheets of paper. Student absenteeism often occurs in one room, so it is difficult for schools and parents to submit reports on their children's attendance. Because parents understand their children's attendance reports when taking report cards, so there are some students who skip school. This problem is certainly troublesome for schools and parents. based on the problem, of course for parents that their children are in school, want to monitor their children who are participating in learning activities. Observing the above problems, it is necessary to have a web-based student attendance system with whatsapp gateway. The waterfall method is divided into several terms, namely planning, analysis, design and implementation. Data collection will use literature review, field review and interview methods. PHP, HTML, CSS and Javascript programming languages. The author will build a Web-Based Student Attendance Information System using the Whatsapp Gateway. In the system, it has been used as student attendance at school while controlling the level of student attendance at school in real time by sending WhatsApp messages. So that it is understandable for schools as well as for parents.

The study addressed three questions, what is the level of school attendance under the crisis situation in Maiduguri metropolis? Are parents and teachers willing to send back their children to the affected schools? Does insecurity have a significant impact on attendance of school children? Impact of Insecurity Questionnaire (IIQ) was developed for the study. The alpha reliability of the questionnaire was .965. It was administered to 225 parents and teachers in 21 junior secondary schools in Maiduguri, Borno state that were affected in the activities of Boko Haram in the metropolis. The responses to the questionnaire were summarized using percentages. Chi-square was computed to test for differences in responses on the impact of insecurity on school attendance. The students were found the level of school attendance under the crisis situation in Maiduguri metropolis has been low but that of male students seems to be lower than that of female students. Parents and teachers were willing to send their children back to the affected schools. The impact of insecurity on school attendance was found to be significant.

School is one of the places that plays an important role in educating a child, especially in matters relating to behavior, intellectual intelligence, emotional intelligence and spiritual intelligence. All of that will be built from an early age which is based in the school environment, therefore how important schools are for children. Vocational High School is a level with education equivalent to Senior High School whose education has a certain field with the aim of graduating ready to work. The attendance or attendance system is needed by schools to assess a student's achievement. However, there is a problem where some schools currently use conventional methods in giving presence to their students, including SMKN 1 Kota Serang. This problem can result in the duration of teaching and learning time being reduced and the resulting data information is inaccurate. With the presence of a computerized attendance system that will make this problem resolved, therefore the authors intend to design and create an attendance or attendance system that facilitates schools, especially in terms of student attendance or attendance. For this study, the authors used Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) as a medium for automatic student attendance combined with web-based applications using the PHP programming language and MySQL Database Management System for processing student attendance data. For the system development method, the author uses the Waterfall method so that it can facilitate the design of the attendance system or student attendance.

In this study, we examined government policies and the relevant law on prevention measures for school attendance problems in Japanese compulsory education schools from the perspective of school avoidance behaviour. In summary: (a) the number of students with school attendance problems has been increasing rapidly since 2017; (b) despite an increase in school counsellors as a government-initiated prevention measure, the number of students with school attendance problems has risen; (c) government policies and the relevant law seek to foster social independence even for students unable to return to school and to provide spaces where students with school attendance problems feel comfortable, which may inadvertently reinforce or perpetuate school avoidance behaviour; and (d) in the Japanese compulsory education system, stakeholders have limited opportunities to block school avoidance behaviour. We propose two measures to prevent school attendance problems drawing on a macro-level behavioural perspective: (a) employing data on class absences in mainstream schools, regardless of the reason for the absence, as an evaluation criterion for prolonged school absenteeism, and (b) implementing appropriate grade repetition for students who miss classes in their mainstream school over a certain threshold, including withholding the school diploma.

Al-Azhar schools have staff such as principals, teachers and administration so that the data entered is quite a lot.The staffing system at the Al-Azhar school is still manual by inputting it with excel. To take attendance at the employee using fingerprints and some use the attendance form. However, errors often occur during scanning because the scanner cannot detect someone's finger when the scanner is dirty. So that many employees update attendance by filling out the attendance update form. Given the problems above, it is possible to propose a mobile-based personnel application system. This staffing application has various features that can be used for taking attendance, leave forms, attendance history, school information, and employee profiles. This Android-based attendance can only be taken around the school or less than 20 meters from the school distance. To find out the distance between th0e user and the school, this attendance application uses the haversine algorithm to measure the distance between the user and the school

In this study, an enhanced attendance monitoring system using biometric fingerprint recognition in tracking and monitoring employees’ attendances for Callang National High School, District 04, San Manuel, Isabela was introduced. For most organizations, handling people is a daunting job in which it is very important to maintain an accurate record of attendance. Taking and maintaining the attendance of employee manually on a regular basis is a big activity that requires time. For this reason an effective system was designed. The system was designed and developed primarily to improve the monitoring of employees attendances and leave management through the use of biometric technology. It records the data of the employees, handles leave management, tracks employee attendance and encourages participation through fingerprint recognition. The system is equipped with a dashboard monitoring system that can be viewed by school heads to track the list of employees, early birds (employees who arrived early), on-leave staff, on-official business and a statistical graph of the monthly attendance rate of employees. Moreover, the system provides an auto-generated DTR for employees which saved time compared to the manual process. The innovation greatly affects the improvement of employees’ attendance through its automated attendance monitoring, leave management and report generated by the system. The impact of EAMS to the employees was identified through first quarter attendance report of SY 2028-2019 which served as a bases of comparison with the attendance rate of SY 2019-2020 when the system was implemented. The outcome shows that through the usage of the system, employees’ attendance has improved.

Abstract: Since the incorporation of student chronic absenteeism rates into state school accountability systems after the passage of the Every Student Succeeds Act , schools have adopted new practices to improve student attendance and decrease chronic absenteeism. Some of these practices borrow features from behavior management systems such as tiering students, differentiating support and consequences, and taking disciplinary action. This qualitative case study examines how attendance management practices are designed and implemented in a large urban school district and explores the empirical and conceptual relationship between student behavior and attendance management within the “school-prison nexus.” We use interviews with parents, high school students, and staff charged with reducing chronic absenteeism to demonstrate how managing students’ attendance through intervention plans, student monitoring, and threats of legal action have implicit and explicit parallels to the management of student behavior in schools and could be considered a potential mechanism through which the school-prison nexus functions. We conclude with implications for schools and districts as they seek ways to reduce chronic absenteeism without contributing to the over-surveillance and punishment of high school youth.

Pupil absenteeism remains a significant problem for schools across the globe with negative impacts on overall pupil performance being well-documented. Whilst all schools continue to emphasize good attendance, some schools still find it difficult to reach the required average attendance, which in the UK is 96%. A novel approach is proposed to help schools improve attendance that leverages the market target model, which is built on association rule mining and probability theory, to target sessions that are most impactful to overall poor attendance. Tests conducted at Willen Primary School, in Milton Keynes, UK, showed that significant improvements can be made to overall attendance, attendance in the target session, and persistent (chronic) absenteeism, through the use of this approach. The paper concludes by discussing school leadership, research implications, and highlights future work which includes the development of a software program that can be rolled-out to other schools.

The discipline of the teacher's work includes an educator's obedience and observance of all the rules or regulations that have been enforced in the school with full consciousness from within. One example of the teacher's work discipline is his regular attendances. At Vocational high school (SMKN) 1 Rambah, the teacher attendance system is through an automatic attendance system that uses fingerprints, where teachers fill out attendance forms every day with a technology device that uses fingerprints as the user identification medium. Using fingerprint attendance machines at the time of the Covid-19 pandemic is very ineffective because fingerprinting tools touched by many people can cause the coronavirus to stick to the device and spread to the school environment. As a result, a new teacher attendance application must be designed and developed using a web-based GPS (Global Positioning System) and Android devices. This application is expected to break the COVID-19 transmission sequence. The application can be accepted and applied to SMK State 1 Rambah based on the results of testing using UAT (User Acceptance Testing)

Administrative Theory of Management developed by Henri Fayol in 19th Century was used to guide this study. The study employed Convergent design under mixed method approach. The targeted population of this study include 9 heads of schools, 1 DEO, 9 ward education officers’ and 283 teachers from the 09 public secondary schools in Longido District, Tanzania that make a total number of 302 populations. The sample size of this study included 4 heads of schools, 4 ward education officers, 48 teachers from 4 public secondary schools and 1 DEO in Longido District to make the total number of 57 respondents. Questionnaires, interview guide and document analysis guide were used to collect data from the respondents. The reliability of quantitative data was established through Cronbach-Alpha where by (r=0.86 for teachers’ questionnaire) while qualitative data through triangulation and member checking methods. Quantitative data was analyzed by using descriptive analysis to generate frequency, means and percentages. Qualitative data was analyzed thematically and presented in words by verbatim quotations. Research ethics such as anonymity, confidentiality and acknowledgement were adhered across the entire research process. The study found out that good communication between WEOs and heads of schools, inspection of teachers' attendance register books, frequently schools’ visits and provide advice to teachers who are not attending to schools contribute good attendance to teachers. The researcher concluded that WEOs supervisory roles contribute teachers school attendance positively whereby teachers adhered to code of conduct by coming and departure to school on time. The study recommends that; WEOs should encourage teachers attending to school daily and solve the conflicts and management to enhance their attendance at schools. In this article, Genevieve Siegel-Hawley illuminates the challenges and opportunities posed by demographic change in suburban school systems. As expanding student populations stretch the enrollment capacities of existing schools in suburban communities, new schools are built and attendance lines are redrawn. This redistricting process can be used either to foster school diversity or to exacerbate racial isolation. Drawing on data from the U.S. Census, the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), and the school district, along with mapping software from Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Siegel-Hawley examines the relationship between overcrowding, racial isolation, and the original, proposed, and final high school attendance zones in a changing suburban district. Findings indicate that school officials responsible for the rezoning process failed to embrace the growing diversity of the school system, choosing instead to solidify extreme patterns of racial isolation within high school attendance areas. The segregative impact of the district's new attendance zones may be subject to legal scrutiny, a consequence that could—and should—discourage other school systems from adopting similarly harmful redistricting policies.

The study used the descriptive-correlational survey method. The respondents of the study were the twenty four (24) teachers of the twelve (12) senior high schools of Maguindanao, Philippines. There were two (2) Senior High English teachers that were chosen randomly from each senior high schools of Maguindanao. It has a total of twenty-four (24) Senior High English Teachers. In every teacher, there are 10 senior high school students chosen randomly with a total of two hundred forty (240) senior high school students. The immediate supervisors of the teachers from the twelve (12) secondary schools answered the research problem number 1, while the final grades in English of the two hundred forty (240) senior high students were taken from their English teachers to answer the research problem number 2. The respondents of this study were chosen randomly using lottery. Pearson’s Product - Moment Correlation Coefficient was used to determine the significant relationship of the level of punctuality and attendance of the English teachers to the students’ level of academic performance. Based on the findings of the study, it is concluded that the Senior High School English Teachers’ level of teaching practices is influenced by their punctuality and attendance. It further concluded that teachers’ punctuality and attendance contributed to students’ level of academic performance in English. School non-attendance in autism spectrum disorders has received very little attention to date. The study aimed to provide a comprehensive description of school non-attendance in students with autism spectrum disorders. Through an online survey, parents of 486 children (mean age: 11 years) reported on school attendance over 1 month and reasons for instances of non-attendance. On average, students missed 5 days of school of a possible 23 days. Persistent non-attendance (absent on 10%+ of available sessions) occurred among 43% of students. School non-attendance was associated with child older age, not living in a two-parent household, parental unemployment and, especially, attending a mainstream school. School refusal accounted for 43% of non-attendance. School exclusion and school withdrawal each accounted for 9% of absences. Truancy was almost non-existent. Non-problematic absenteeism (mostly related to medical appointments and illness) accounted for 32% of absences. Non-problematic absenteeism was more likely among those with intellectual disability, school refusal was more likely among older students and school exclusion was more likely among students from single-parent, unemployed and well-educated households. Findings suggest that school non-attendance in autism spectrum disorders is a significant issue, and that it is important to capture detail about attendance patterns and reasons for school non-attendance. Lay abstract Our study aimed to describe school non-attendance in students with autism. We conducted an online survey. Parents of 486 students (mean age: 11 years) indicated which days their child had missed school (over a period of 1 month). If the child had missed a day, the parent was asked to select a reason from a list of 15 possible reasons (this is a measure of types of school non-attendance called SNACK (School Non-Attendance ChecKlist; Heyne et al., 2019)). On average, students missed 5 days of school of a possible 23 days. Missing over 10% of school is known as persistent absence, and in our study, 43% of students experienced persistent absence. Older students, who attended mainstream schools, who did not live in a two-parent household and whose caregiver was unemployed were more likely to miss school. Looking at the reasons for absence, school refusal was the most frequent reason, accounting for 43% of absences. Nine percent of absence was due to school exclusion. Nine percent of absence was due to school withdrawal. Truancy was almost non-existent. A final reason describes non-problematic absence that is mostly due to medical appointments and illness. This type of absence accounted for 32% of absences in our study, and it was more likely in student with intellectual disability. School refusal was more likely among older students. School exclusion was more likely among students from single-parent, unemployed and well-educated households. Findings from this study help us to understand better the difficulties students with autism experience attending school.

Religious adherence, church attendance, and economic ideology have long been intertwined. We discuss the compatibility between Catholic doctrine and individual-based free market systems and then examine the effect of Catholic school attendance on an individual’s belief in and support for a capitalist economic system. Using individual level survey data, we find a positive relationship between attendance at Catholic schools and capitalist ideology as measured by an index that contrasts individual versus government action and responsibility in the economy. While attendance at Catholic school is associated with a stronger emphasis on individual, rather than governmental, responsibility in the economy, the effect is driven largely by Catholic high school or college attendance, reflecting an increased exposure to Catholic faith during the formative years of late adolescence.

Chronic early school absence (preschool through third grade) is associated with school failure. The presence of school nurses may lead to fewer absences, and nurse practitioners in school-based health centers (SBHCs) can facilitate a healthier population resulting in improved attendance. Efforts to get students back to school are unexplored in nursing literature. This article describes a nursing intervention to decrease early school absence in two elementary schools K–3 ( N = 449) and a Head Start program ( N = 130). The Head Start Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) contacted families of chronically and excessively absent students by telephone, clinic visit at school, or home visit. The aggregate percentage attendance was evaluated by grades (preschool to third grade), schools (Head Start, Elementary Schools 1 and 2), and grades and schools and compared with publicly available school district aggregate data. There were statistically significant increases in attendance from Year 1 to Year 2 at p < .05 at the elementary level but not at the Head Start level. Student demographics, types of contacts, absence reasons (including sick child), and medical diagnoses are described.

This study evaluates the relationship between the Recognized American School Counselor Association Model Program (RAMP) designation and students’ achievement and attendance outcomes in elementary and middle schools. We used data from 2009 through 2015 from Wake County Public Schools, the largest school district in North Carolina. Our analyses use a school fixed effects approach to assess how student outcomes change when a school receives the RAMP designation. Results indicate that RAMP boosts student attendance, particularly in middle schools, but has limited to no effect on student achievement.

School segregation is determined both by residential sorting and local policies, such as the drawing of attendance boundaries and school siting. This paper develops an approach to understanding the relative importance of these factors by calculating the distance-minimizing assignment of students to schools and assessing whether actual assignments differ systematically by race. Using census data and attendance boundary maps for nearly 1,600 school districts, I find that attendance boundaries create 5 percent more integration than a distance-minimizing baseline, while school siting plays almost no role. It has a total population of 344 students, 186 at the Intensive English Unit on a different site and 158 in the mainstream high school campus. Fifty-five percent of the 158 students are Aboriginal. There are also 32 students in the Back-To-School Program, an annex of the main high school. All of these students are Aboriginal. Study Purpose: School principals were surveyed in rural and urban Nebraska schools to compare policies and procedures on school attendance, and to contrast the use of disciplinary procedures for attendance, violence and substance abuse. Methods: A survey was sent to a 50 percent random sample of Nebraska schools. Respondent school addresses in metropolitan statistical areas (MSA) areas were categorized as urban, and non-MSA respondents were classified as rural area schools. Results: Of the 680 surveys mailed, 464 (68.2 percent) completed surveys were returned. Overall, 86.2 percent of respondents were from rural schools and 13.8 percent from urban schools. A list of disciplinary problems and procedures was reported for a first-time offense by rural and urban schools. Both an “occasional attendance problem” and a “chronic attendance problem” were most frequently addressed through parent contact in both urban and rural areas. For “fighting with another student,” rural schools most commonly reported discipline by teacher, followed by discipline by principal and parent contact. In urban schools, discipline by principal was most common. For “using drugs other than alcohol or tobacco at school” in both areas, disciplinary procedures included parent contact and short-term suspension. A list of disciplinary problems and procedures was also reported for a second-time offense and third-time offense. For “fighting with another student,” the most commonly reported procedure was discipline by principal and parent contact for a second-time offense, followed by short-term suspension and long-term suspension for a third-time offense. For “using drugs other than alcohol or tobacco at school,” for a second time offense was long-term suspension and semester expulsion for a third-time offense. Principals were also asked in an open-response format, what program or procedures were currently in place to prevent violence in their school. Common responses were “conflict resolution training,” followed by “the Boys Town social skills and behaviors model” and “a zero tolerance policy.” Conclusions: School principals generally reported similar disciplinary actions for most disciplinary problems. For recurrent offenses and for serious problems, principals generally used tougher disciplinary procedures. Some of the discrepancies in disciplinary actions, however, suggest the need for consistent enforcement and communication of policies for both urban and rural schools.

Predating the introduction of the Closing the Gap strategy in 2007, First Nation students’ attendance, retention and engagement in remote schools has been a concern for educators and successive governments. The following paper describes a case study—one part of a large Australian federally funded ‘Emerging Priorities Program’ project that sought to examine these issues. Specifically, it explores those factors that contribute to either exacerbating the decline in attendance, engagement or retention or lead to improved outcomes. The case study was undertaken at a Vocational Education and Training boarding school catering for Aboriginal students, mostly from remote areas of Western Australia. Students travel considerable distance to attend the school, often because of their family connections to the school. In this study students from one of the English classes became co-researchers in the project, providing input and collaborating at every stage of the research process.The findings indicate the need to adopt a strength-based approach when teaching remote students. This can be achieved through positive relationships between educators and students, which, in turn, is developed through cultural awareness and the use of community members and Aboriginal educators as role models and human resources for schools.

Improving school attendance is a target for countries world-wide as part of their drive towards more effective, inclusive schools and higher pupil achievement. This article first seeks an educationally substantive, rational basis for improving school attendance among the reasons normally put forward. It then looks at how school attendance/absence in general is perceived in Scotland, as reflected in educational research, policy and practices. It concludes that ‘unauthorised’ absence has attracted more official attention than ‘authorised’, despite higher absence levels of the latter. The article then focuses on the largest single given cause of absence — medical reasons — and suggests that this issue should be disaggregated and addressed for the dual purposes both of supporting better the education of those children whose absence is inevitable, and of enabling the improved school attendance of those children who could, in terms of their health, actually attend school. Ways ahead are proposed.

For some children and young people (CYP) with long-term physical health conditions (LTPHCs) attending school can be difficult. There is a lack of evidence documenting their school attendance experiences, how schools manage absence for these children, and subsequent effects. This study utilised an existing dataset from eighty-nine 11–18-year-olds in mainstream secondary schools in the United Kingdom across 11 LTPHCs that provided first-hand accounts about the children’s experiences of school. Data pre-coded “attendance” were subject to thematic analysis to explore issues emerging. Findings showed attendance patterns varied, with some CYP missing little and others significant amounts of education. Children with LTPHCs wanted to attend school and did their best to navigate education alongside health. School systems for attendance were inconsistent and adversarial. Remedial and supportive action emerged as lacking, and children felt it was their personal responsibility to make up for lost time and missed work when absent. Decisions on whether they attended school, coupled with practices promoting high attendance had detrimental consequences for CYP with LTPHCs educationally, emotionally and socially. Overall, children with LTPHCs felt punished, stigmatised, unfairly treated, unequal and excluded. Results have implications for education, health, and policy practitioners to better plan and target attention so that the LTPHC cohort are treated sensitively and equitably and afforded their entitlement to education when they cannot go to school for health reasons often outside of their control.

Educational subsidies are increasing school attendance, but the impact on the child’s working participation is vague. After running for five years, the government of Indonesia changed the regulation of Bantuan Operasional Sekolah (the BOS program or school operational assistance) to eliminate school fees for all elementary and junior secondary schools in 2009. This study intends to estimate the impact of hours of school attendance on children working using the 2009 regulation BOS program as an instrument. The estimation uses data from the fourth and fifth Indonesia Family Life Survey (IFLS) with Fuzzy Regression Discontinuity Design (FRDD) as methodology. The result presents that the children who benefited from the 2009 regulation BOS program spent more hours attending school than non-beneficiaries. However, the increase in school attendance is increasing the time allocation for income-generating and household work, supporting the idea that working and schooling are not perfectly substitutable.
