Appleby, R. Scott, Atalia Omer e David Little, a cura di. The Oxford Handbook of Religion, Conflict, and Peacebuilding. Oxford University Press, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199731640.001.0001.

Abstract (sommario):
This book provides a comprehensive, interdisciplinary account of the scholarship on religion, conflict, and peacebuilding. Extending that inquiry beyond its traditional parameters, the volume explores the legacies of colonialism, missionary activism, secularism, orientalism, and liberalism. While featuring case studies from diverse contexts and traditions, the volume is organized thematically, beginning with a mapping of scholarship on religion, violence, and peace. The second part scrutinizes challenges to secularist theorizing of questions of conflict transformation and broadens the discussion of violence to include an analysis of its cultural, religious, and structural forms. The third part engages contested issues such as religion’s relations to development, violent and nonviolent militancy, and the legitimate use of force; the protection of the freedom of religion in resolving conflicts; and gender as it relates to religious peacebuilding. The fourth part highlights the practice of peacebuilding through exploring constructive resources within various traditions, the transformative role of rituals, spiritual practices in the formation of peacebuilders, interfaith activism on American university campuses, the relation of religion to solidarity activism, and scriptural reasoning as a peacebuilding practice. It also offers extended reflections on the legacy of missionary peacebuilding activism and the neoliberal framing of peacebuilding schemes and agendas. The volume is innovative because the authors grapple with the tension between theory and practice, cultural theory’s critique of the historicity of the very categories informing the discussion, and the challenge that the justpeace frame makes to the liberal peace paradigm, offering elicitive, elastic, and context-specific insights for strategic peacebuilding processes.

Ward, Joseph P., a cura di. European Empires in the American South. University Press of Mississippi, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.14325/mississippi/9781496812193.001.0001.

Abstract (sommario):
This multi-authored volume examines the process of European expansion into the Atlantic by focusing on a region that has come to be known as the American South. During the three centuries after Europeans began to cross the Atlantic with confidence, they interacted with one another, with the native people, and with enslaved Africans across the South. The volume's essays offer examples of colonial encounter for those who are curious about how the broad processes of historical change influenced particular people and places. In recent years there have appeared several important studies that address the Atlantic World generally and/or the specific experiences of Spanish, British, and French imperial projects in the South. A key aspect of each of these colonial schemes was finding ways to engage profitably—from the European perspective—with Native Americans. The consequences of Indian encounters with European invaders has long been a principal feature of ethnohistorical research, but during the last long generation scholars of Native Americans in the South have increasingly viewed their subject in an Atlantic World context. With such scholarship as its foundation, the goal of the present volume is to bring together scholars with research linked to each of the three major European colonial powers to draw increased scholarly attention to the South as a significant arena of imperial ambition.

Kachuck, Aaron J. The Solitary Sphere in the Age of Virgil. Oxford University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780197579046.001.0001.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The Solitary Sphere in the Age of Virgil uses an enriched tripartite model of Roman culture—touching not only the public and the private, but also the solitary—in order to present a new interpretation of Latin literature and of the historical causes of this third sphere’s relative invisibility in scholarship. By connecting Cosmos and Imperium to the Individual, the solitary sphere was not so much a way of avoiding politics as a political education in itself. As reimagined by literature in this age, this sphere was an essential space for the formation of the new Roman citizen of the Augustan revolution, and was behind many of the notable features of the literary revolution of Virgil’s age: the expansion of the possibilities of the book of poetry, the birth of the literary cursus, new coordinations of cosmology and politics within strictly organized schemes, the attraction of first-person genres, and the subjective style. Through close readings of Cicero’s late works and the oeuvres of Virgil, Horace, and Propertius and the works of other authors in the age of Virgil, The Solitary Sphere thus presents a radical reinterpretation of classical Roman literature, and contributes to the study of premodern culture more generally, especially for traditions that have taken antiquity as too fixed a point in their own literary, religious, and cultural histories.

Galvin, Rachel. News of War. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190623920.001.0001.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Drawing on original archival research, providing detailed, socio-historically attentive readings, and featuring new translations, this book offers a compelling model of comparative, transnational poetics scholarship. It charts a cross-cultural dilemma from the Spanish Civil War through World War II: how to write a war poem that acknowledges the civilian’s distance from war. Civilian witnessing is problematic within an epistemic framework that deems physical experience of combat a necessary warrant for knowledge of war. Acknowledging this dilemma spurred noncombatant poets writing in English, Spanish, and French to draw on both journalistic structures and classical rhetoric in their wartime writing. Galvin examines the work of W. H. Auden, César Vallejo, Wallace Stevens, Raymond Queneau, Marianne Moore, and Gertrude Stein, who regularly wrote prose for periodicals in addition to poems inspired by press coverage of war. These poets developed what Galvin calls meta-rhetoric, or self-reflexive rhetorical tropes and schemes that reveal their own mechanisms. She argues that meta-rhetoric’s self-scrutiny and self-interference constitute a significant civilian poetics. By spotlighting the speaker’s distance from war and the problem of receiving war news via print journalism, such strategies make manifest problems of literary and moral authority. Ultimately, Galvin shows that the apparent impediment of limited access to firsthand experience actually proved highly generative for civilian poetics. An epilogue argues that U.S.-based noncombatant poets in the twenty-first century write about war using similar strategies, even as they cite and ironize poetry of the 1930s and 1940s.

Touber, Jetze. Biblical Philology and Hermeneutical Debate in the Dutch Republic in the Second Half of the Seventeenth Century. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198806837.003.0016.

Abstract (sommario):
Spinoza’s time was rife with conflicts. Historians tend to structure these by grouping two opposing forces: progressive Cartesio-Cocceian-liberals versus conservative Aristotelian-Voetian-Orangists. Moderately enlightened progressives, so the story goes, endorsed notions such as human dignity, toleration, freedom of opinion, but shied away from radicalism, held back by the conservative counterforce. Yet the drift was supposed to be inevitably towards the Enlightenment. This chapter tries to capture theological conflicts in the Dutch Republic of the Early Enlightenment in a triangular scheme, that covers a wider range of conflicting interests. Its corners are constituted by ‘dogmatism’ (Dordrecht orthodoxy), ‘scripturalism’ (Cocceianism), and ‘rationalism’ (theology inspired by Cartesianism, Spinozism, or any other brand of new philosophy). Dogmatics and rationalists battled in terms of philosophy, whereas the scripturalists and their respective opponents fought each other rather in the field of biblical scholarship. This multilateral conflict within Dutch Calvinism made the ideal of a unified church untenable.
