This book is a monograph, on the political party, that shows the birth, rise and fall of the League of Polish Families. In the chapter I the division was made into individual and collective actors. Chapter II is an attempt to describe the birth and functioning of LPF in the context of a broader national movement. Chapter III focuses on the fields of activities of the national party. Chapter IV is an attempt to recreate the role of LPF on the political scene. Chapter V is an attempt to play the role of LPF on the European political scene. Chapter VI is the description of a research taken on the party groups, surveyed with the usage of a questionnaire technique. Chapter VII is an empirical reflection of the views of LPF deputies and senators about political transformation and Polish integration with European structures. The tool for this method was mainly based on an open interview. Chapter VIII is an attempt to present the Polish society in the perspective of political transformation, and the reflection on the degree of civility and democracy and finaly presents the fall of LPF. \n\nNiniejsza książka ma charakter monografii poświęconej partii politycznej, która ukazuje narodziny, rozkwit i upadek Ligi Polskich Rodzin. W rozdziale I dokonany został podział na aktorów zbiorowych i indywidualnych. Rozdział II jest próbą opisu narodzin i funkcjonowania LPR w ramach szerszego ruchu narodowego. Rozdział III koncentruje się na polach aktywności partii narodowej. Rozdział IV jest próbą odtworzenia roli LPR-u na scenie politycznej. Rozdział V jest próbą odtworzenia roli LPR na europejskiej scenie politycznej. Rozdział VI stanowi badawczy portret kół partyjnych, przeprowadzony za pomocą metody ankietowej z zastosowaniem kwestionariusza ankiety. Rozdział VII jest empirycznym odzwierciedleniem poglądów posłów i senatorów LPR na temat transformacji ustrojowej i integracji Polski ze strukturami europejskimi. Narzędziem tej metody był wywiad swobodny otwarty. Rozdział VIII jest próbą przedstawienia społeczeństwa polskiego w perspektywie transformacji ustrojowej, refleksji nad stopniem obywatelskości i demokracji oraz upadkiem LPR.

Il Seicento è stato per l’Europa il “secolo del teatro”, per la quantità e qualità delle opere drammatiche e per la ricchezza delle invenzioni sceniche. Studiarlo, in particolare in area francese e spagnola alla luce della compenetrazione tra Classicismo, Manierismo e Barocco, significa discutere e approfondire alcuni nodi tematici essenziali non solo alla conoscenza di un’epoca storico-letteraria ma alla stessa modernità. Questo volume, curato da Barbara Innocenti (cui si deve anche la trascrizione di un originale documento sulla morte di Luigi XIV rinvenuto negli archivi pistoiesi), grazie alla partecipazione di noti specialisti che si sono cimentati nella lettura di testi esemplari nel quadro della complessiva storiografi a teatrale e di un ricco apparato iconografico si presenta dunque con il respiro comparatistico necessario. Gli approfondimenti su grandissimi autori (in particolare Molière, Tirso de Molina, l’‘effetto Tasso’ nella letteratura francese…) favoriscono confronti e intersezioni che consentono di delineare un orizzonte di cultura “europea”, arricchito, sul piano delle traduzioni e delle messe in scena, da un creativo dialogo con la contemporaneità. Il “Secolo d’Oro” oltrepassa insomma i propri confini, attraversando tempi, aree geografi che, letterature.

Lettere a Ruggero Jacobbi offre un ampio regesto di oltre mille pezzi epistolari inviati all'autore nell'arco di quarant'anni (dal 1938 al 1981) e di circa settanta lettere da lui scritte a vari corrispondenti, dando conto di tutto il materiale epistolare conservato nel Fondo Jacobbi dell'"Archivio contemporaneo Bonsanti" del Gabinetto Scientifico Letterario G.P. Vieusseux di Firenze.Dai documenti inediti, attentamente schedati da Francesca Bartolini, emerge con forza la figura di un intellettuale tra i più significativi del nostro Novecento, sempre presente nei dibattiti culturali del tempo e appassionato e reattivo nei confronti del mondo letterario e teatrale. Grazie alle molte voci, che intrecciano diversi paesi ed età, possiamo ricostruirnela vita a partire dagli anni dell'ermetismo, al quale fu vicino nella prima giovinezza, trovare traccia dei sedici anni trascorsi in Brasile, ripercorrere gli ultimi decenni italiani, nei quali avrebbe contemporaneamente esercitato le attività di recensore, regista e autore teatrale, saggista, critico letterario, storico della letteratura, docente universitario, poeta e direttore dell'Accademia d'Arte drammatica "Silvio D'Amico".Molti e autorevoli sono i nomi che ricorrono, anche di mittenti di cultura lusitana e ispanica, a testimoniare la presenza autorevole di Jacobbi sulla scena europea. Basti ricordare Murilo Mendes, Jorge Amado, Ricardo Cassiano e, tra gli italiani, Italo Calvino, Alessandro Parronchi, Vasco Pratolini, Salvatore Quasimodo, Vittorio Sereni e Elio Vittorini. Nell'appendice che chiude il volume è proposta la trascrizione di alcunelettere che trattano di scrittura, di critica, di amicizia ed impegno.

This book examines a group of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century figural silks depicting legendary lovers from the Khamsa (Quintet) of epic Persian poetry. Codified by Nizami Ganjavi in the twelfth century, the Khamsa gained popularity in the Persian-speaking realm through illustrated manuscripts produced for the elite, creating a template for illustrating climactic scenes in the love stories of “Layla and Majnun” and “Khusrau and Shirin” that appear on early modern silks. Attributed to Safavid Iran, the publication proposes that dress fashioned from these silks represented Sufi ideals based on the characters. Migration of weavers between Safavid and Mughal courts resulted in producing goods for a sophisticated and educated elite, demonstrating shared cultural values and potential reattribution. Through an examination of primary source materials, literary analysis of the original text, and close iconographical study of figural designs, the study presents original cross-disciplinary arguments about patronage, provenance, and the socio-cultural significance of wearing these silks.

This chapter examines the circumstances under which British troops were initially deployed in Natal and the factors that led to the establishment of a permanent presence. To this end, the chapter describes the events preceding the arrival of a British column at Port of Natal in 1842. The first phase of British military involvement took place on the coast at Natal, or Durban, between 1842 and 1843. Thereafter the scene shifts to Pietermaritzburg, where the garrison established a fort in September 1843. The chapter discusses the military clashes at Natal in May and June 1842 between the British Army and the rebellious Trekkers. It also considers the diplomacy involved in trying to settle the issue of British control over Natal, the Trekker women's revolt against British rule, and the garrison's march on Maritzburg in 1843.

In this chapter, ‘authenticity’ refers to situations where the actions and emotions represented by a pantomime seemingly or truly merge with reality. The chapter examines the dance scene that concludes Xenophon’s Symposium, which is widely recognized as a proto-pantomime. In this dance the myth that is represented is progressively eclipsed from the horizon of the spectators, who end up focusing on the dancers themselves. The episode is situated in the context of the so-called New Music, which emerged around the dramatic date of the Symposium. A fragment from Aristoxenus transmitted by Athenaeus suggests that Xenophon’s dance scene became emblematic of a certain type of mousikē. The rest of the chapter is dedicated to the characteristic lifelikeness of pantomimes in a number of Greek and Latin epigrams.

This chapter focuses exclusively on sacred scents and traces smell's role in the realm of religion, particularly the Christian tradition. It concentrates on the fourth century, when scent began to play an increasingly important role in early Christian practices. Initially, smells were present in ancient Christian texts, often as undercurrents within the text's larger purpose. Ancient Christians found numerous biblical models for experiencing a domain that lay beyond the physical senses but to which the senses provided access. Through sense encounters, people in the ancient world expected and experienced interaction with their gods, even when this implied communication with realms beyond the physically finite world.

This book offers an overview of the aesthetic and ethical issues raised by the contemporary olfactory arts, which range from gallery and museum sculptures and installations, through the enhancement of theater, film, and music with scents, to the ambient scenting of stores and avant-garde chefs’ use of scents in cuisine. Special attention is given to the aesthetics of perfume and incense and the question of their art status, as well as to the role of scent in the appreciation of nature and gardens. Ethical issues are discussed regarding ambient scenting, perfume wearing, and the use of smells in fast-food marketing. Because of the traditional neglect and denigration of the sense of smell and its aesthetic potential by philosophers from Kant and Hegel to the present, and by Darwin’s and Freud’s view of the human sense of smell as a nearly useless evolutionary vestige, the first parts of the book counter that tradition with both philosophical arguments and evidence from current evolutionary theory, neuroscience, psychology, anthropology, history, linguistics, and literature. Although the focus is on Western olfactory arts, the book draws on non-Western examples throughout. The book is aimed at both philosophers and general readers interested in the arts, and develops positions that should stimulate further discussion.

The spatial, temporal, and kinesthetic features of reenactment in dance also apply to what is perhaps the most creative and destructive figure of the present day, the derivative. Quite literally, derivatives restage past performance as a prospect of future gain, they seek profits from sudden shifts in equilibrium, mining volatility for inventive returns. As avatars of the ways in which value is realized in movement, derivatives invite consideration of what dance knows so well. Dance, of course, relies upon risk, but also engenders other ways of valuing the creation of the unexpected. Whereas finance insists upon obligatory movement, it lacks a language of motion that dance discloses. In short, if reenactment today assumes the body of a derivative, one should turn to movement practices to grasp the social kinesthetic.

Born under the sign of Gemini, between May 14 and June 13, 1265, most likely towards the end of May, in a low-nobility family in Florence, he was baptized on March 26, 1266, with the name of During, later abbreviated to Dante, the name of which he became known for posterity. He died between the 13th and 14th of September 1321 after making a diplomatic trip in the city of Venice representing the city of Ravenna, Dante, possibly suffering from malaria. By spiritist analysis, Dante was a powerful medium, but he lived and wrote in a period dominated by the Church, and, according to Ranieri (2012, p. 57) defined, he was not fully understood where he considered his work to be written only by the poetic aspect and not as a real experience, experienced exponentially in its nocturnal incursions through the astral unfolding and the scenes portrayed present realities of the different spiritual worlds existing on our Planet. Therefore, in this year of 2021, in which Dante celebrates 700 years of death, the present book is a tribute to this poet who presented us with a classic of world literature through a bias previously unexplored.

Why do we enjoy popular movies? This book explores perceptual, cognitive, and emotional reasons for our engagement. It considers effects of camera lenses and the layout of images. It outlines the types of transitions between shots, and it traces their historical functions and changes. It classifies different kinds of shots and the changes in them across a century. It explains the arcs of scenes and how they fit into the larger structure of sequences, and then it explores scene- and sequence-like units that have become increasingly prevalent in recent years. It then breaks movies into larger, roughly half-hour parts and provides psychological evidence for them. Finally, it explores the rhythms of whole movies, first observing the flow of physical changes—shot durations, luminance, motion, and clutter—as it has developed over time, and then how cinematic polyrhythms have come to match aspects of those in the human body. Overall, this book focuses on how the narration, the manner in which the story is told, has come to reinforce the structure of the narrative, the story proper. It uses several hundred popular movies released over a century and embeds its exploration in discussions of evolution, culture, and technological change. The changes in movies have contributed to viewers’ engagement by sustaining attention, promoting understanding of the narrative, heightening emotional commitment, and fostering their felt presence in the story. Examples of cinematic effects in particular movies are given at every turn.

This book presents the definition of legal psychology as an area of specialization within general psychology and some of the applied fields that constitute the work of the professional who is concentrating on this area of expertise. Its objective is to present, indirectly, a different approach to the forensic one, which seeks to clarify, both to the expert and to the layman, that judicial court is not the only scene in which legal psychologists can work. The chapters correspond to academic products that illustrate the lines of research that have been developing in parallel with the exercise of the law and the function of justice management, related to intervention or approaching victims, criminals, witnesses and people in judicial conciliation processes, as well as intervention with children and adolescents in vulnerable social and family conditions to contribute to the restoration of their rights.

Human beings have the capacity to ‘augment’ reality by superimposing mental imagery on the visually perceived scene, a capacity that is here referred to as make-perceive. In the first part of this chapter, the author shows that make-perceive enables us to solve certain problems and pursue certain projects more effectively than bottom-up perceiving or top-down visualization alone. The second part addresses the question of whether make-perceive may help to account for the phenomenal presence of occluded or otherwise hidden features of perceived objects. The author argues that phenomenal presence isn’t well explained by the hypothesis that hidden features are represented using projected mental images. In defending this position, he points to important phenomenological and functional differences between the way hidden object features are represented respectively in mental imagery and amodal completion.

Induced motion is the perception of an illusory motion component in one object or stimulus element due to the presence of another object moving truly in the opposite direction. The phenomenon has been known for several centuries, having been reported in both natural scenes and reproduced in laboratory experiments. Despite the ubiquity of induced motion, attempts to explain the phenomenon have generally revolved around very few principles. Foremost among these is the notion of object-centered reference frame, which stipulates that the visual system encodes objects relative to each other rather than in absolute coordinates relative to an observer. This chapter discusses this phenomenon.

In Leonardo’s Salvator Mundi and the Collecting of Leonardo in the Stuart Courts the ‘Three Salvateers’—Robert Simon, Martin Kemp and Margaret Dalivalle—give a first-hand account of the discovery of the lost Renaissance masterpiece; from its purchase for $1,175 in a New Orleans auction house in 2005, to the worldwide media spectacle of its sale to a Saudi prince for $450 million in 2017. A behind-the-scenes view of the painstaking processes of identification, consultation, scientific analysis, conservation, and archival research that underpinned the attribution of the painting to Leonardo, the book presents a consideration of the place of the painting in Leonardo’s body of work. Exploring the meaning of the painting in terms of Renaissance theology, it considers the identity of its original patron or intended recipient. Unravelling networks of early modern art dealers and collectors in Europe, it traces the emerging reception of Leonardo during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. It was in Enlightenment Britain that the idea of Leonardo as artist–scientist took hold of the public imagination. This book examines the ‘invention’ of Leonardo through the unique prism of the Stuart courts. The documented presence of three paintings of Christ attributed to Leonardo in the vicinity of the seventeenth-century British Royal Collection is both extraordinary and perplexing. Today, Leonardo’s five-hundred-year-old Salvator has not yet disclosed its secret history.

Cast shadows are present in almost every scene we view, yet very little is known about how the brain processes them. On the one hand, shadows can interfere with the visual ability to recognize objects, while on the other hand, they provide critical information for where objects are in a scene. Because shadows can provide compelling cues for location in depth, these cues can overcome other competing sources of information, resulting in illusions. By studying shadow illusions, one can gain insight into the built-in assumptions the brain has about the nature of illumination and its interaction with the surfaces we view each day.

Collections of scenes and texts designated variously as the "Book of the Earth," "Creation of the Solar Disc," and "Book of Aker" were inscribed on the walls of royal sarcophagus chambers throughout Egypt's Ramessid period (Dynasties 19–20). This material illustrated discrete episodes from the nocturnal voyage of the sun god, which functioned as a model for the resurrection of the deceased king. These earliest "Books of the Earth" employed mostly ad hoc arrangements of scenes, united by shared elements of iconography, an overarching, bipartite symmetry of composition, and their frequent pairing with representations of the double sky overhead. From the Twenty-First Dynasty and later, selections of programmatic tableaux were adapted for use in private mortuary contexts, often in conjunction with innovative or previously unattested annotations. The present study collects and analyzes all currently known Book of the Earth material, including discussions of iconography, grammar, orthography, and architectural setting.

HORIZONTES is a tribute to the city Belo Horizonte. The drawings and paintings that make up this tribute were presented in individual and collective exhibitions in art galleries and cultural spaces in the capital of Minas Gerais. The peaces bring scenes from the daily life of the city, its mountains seen in the distance, as well as representing some of its buildings. The creative process begins with drawings and sketches developed on the spot, using graphite pencils, colored pencils, ballpoint pens, a pad of paper and a good shade to protect from the sun. The buildings are drafted on the spot on small sheets of paper, allowing you to choose the best viewing angles and seeking to experience the space, smell the scents, hear the sounds, perceive the warmth and life of each place. The drawings made in the place offer important and necessary information to help organize the perception and better understanding of the object in space. The observation drawing activity involved in this creative process is of great importance, as it is a conventional, personal and individual activity, involving the discovery of forms and their communication. The observation drawings developed at the site are more than just a passive container of the author's eye. They are a powerful medium that influence thinking just as they are influenced by the thinking of the designer. The result seems to represent, more and more, the will and the attempt to paint not only the visible world, but the memory, the history, the winds, the sounds, the smells, the city and the life, with all the symbolic aspect.

The book seeks to answer these questions: Why are there more than 150 gamelans (Indonesian percussion ensembles) in North America, and why are more than half of them associated with American colleges and universities? How and why did gamelan ensembles spark the ethnomusicological imagination? What impact have these ensembles had on college music programs, their local communities, and transnational Indonesian performing arts scenes? How does a lifetime of teaching foreign college students shape the lives of non-American music teachers? First providing an overview of gamelan and its incorporation in education in North America, this book uses the story of the career and community of one performer-teacher, I Made Lasmawan of Bali and Colorado, as a case study to examine the formation and sustenance academic world music ensembles. It examines the way students develop musical and cultural competence by learning gamelan in traditional ethnomusicology ensemble courses and analyzes the merits of including gamelan ensembles in studies in percussion, composition, and music education. More broadly, the book argues that beyond the classroom, the presence of these ensembles shapes transnational arts education and touristic performing arts scenes in Bali. Finally, it advocates for world music ensemble courses as a powerful means for teaching musical and cultural diversity and sparking transnational exchanges, both in and outside the classroom.

A scene-setting chapter which presents in some detail the nexus between climate change and people movement. It explores the anthropogenic nature of climate change and the extent to which certain events or disturbances are attributable to man-made climate change, a connection vital to the justice theory–based analysis to follow. The chapter then explores knowledge of the links between climate change, its effects, people, their setting, and people movement. These factors interact, and a linear connection between a climatic event, its effects, and the movement of people does not necessarily exist. The challenges this presents for both a legal and justice-based analysis are highlighted. The chapter concludes that interesting questions about responsibility are nevertheless raised, which are best explored from a justice angle.

Rae Sremmurd employ trap aesthetics alongside sonic signifiers of crunk in order to construct a club scene that involves partying in the midst of violence. Building on the theory of trap irony I present in Chapter 3, I consider how Rae Sremmurd do queer work as a way of existing outside of neoliberal humanism. By refusing to create capital that feeds systems of violence and by refusing to reproduce within a system of violence, Rae Sremmurd party under duress, building a club that exists just outside of neoliberal humanism, pointing to a future we can only imagine, a future that exists “outside our present conception of what it is to be human.”

Static size contrast and assimilation illusions, such as the Ebbinghaus and Delboeuf illusions, show that the size of nearby objects in a scene can influence the perceived size of a central target. This chapter describes a dynamic variant of these classic size illusions, called the Dynamic Illusory Size-Contrast (DISC) effect. In the DISC effect, a surrounding stimulus that continuously changes size causes an illusory size change in a central target. The effect is dramatically enhanced in the presence of additional stimulus dynamics arising from eye movements or target motion. The chapter proposes that this surprisingly powerful effect of motion on perceived size depends on the degree of uncertainty inherent in the size of the retinal image of a moving object.

The first section brings together the translation of sacred objects from old (Jewish) and new (Christian) Jerusalem to Rome. The second illustrates how the visual initiative of Dominus legem dat (The Lord gives the Law) was conceivable through the absence of the Temple in Jerusalem and the presence of its relics in Rome. The third section describes the visual correspondence between the scene of Dominus legem dat and the representative Jewish composition of the ark between two menorot, as an outcome of Emperor Julian’s failed attempt to rebuild the Temple in Jerusalem.
