Abstract (sommario):
The study was carried out to investigate the visual impact of using fruit trees in urban landscapes by applying the Scenic Beauty Estimation Method (SBE). Thirty students from the Faculty of Horticulture were asked to assign scenic beauty values to different landscapes with and without the presence of fruit trees in urban areas. The results show that fruit trees have positive influences on the aesthetic value of perceived landscape scenery.

Abstract (sommario):
This article presents a green roof cost-benefit analysis (CBA). Green roofs are roofs which are partially or completely covered by vegetation. We discuss the benefits and costs of light self-sustaining vegetated roofs. The benefits of the ecosystem services (ES) provided by green roofs can be classified into private and public benefits. We apply the selected valuation methods first in Helsinki, Finland and subsequently explain how results can be transferred to other urban locations. Past research and this study show that private benefits are usually not high enough to justify the expensive investment for a private decision maker. However, when the public benefits are added to the private benefits, social benefits are higher than the costs of green roofs in most cases.Past research quantified most types of the benefits, excluding scenic and biodiversity benefits. Scenic benefits denote the intangible benefits that people derive from the presence of green space, including at least aesthetic and psychological ones. In this article, special emphasis is placed on the valuation of the scenic benefits; these are among the most challenging benefits to valuate in monetary terms. We employ hedonic pricing theory, implemented via spatial regression models, and green roof implementation scenarios in order to estimate the aggregate willingness to pay for a “unit” of green roof. The results show that the scenic benefits can be a significant attribute in cost-benefit calculations. Yet, the amount of benefits strongly depends on the green roof design.

Abstract (sommario):
Nature-based tourism is stimulated by the aesthetic properties of landscapes, and particular elements of the latter determine the overall scenic beauty. Big stones on forested mountain slopes are among such elements. The Partisan Glade geosite-based tourist destination ofthe Western Caucasus in southwestern Russia is distinguished by the occurrence of such stones. Their field investigation (measurements of physical parameters and interpretation of the common criteria of tourist-meaningful beauty) shows that these are essentially blocks (clasts with the size of 1–10 m) of all grades (fine, medium, and coarse blocks) and colluvial origin. The blocks influence on such parameters of scenic beauty as scale, condition, balance, diversity, shape, and uniqueness, and, therefore, these blocks are of aesthetic value. The most important is color and size. Apparently, the presence of these big stones stimulates tourists’ positive emotions. It is recommended to avoid block removal or breaking in the course of road maintenance.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract The ways of approaching, treating and interpreting the theatre underwent major changes in the second half of the twentieth century. As Peter Brook’s research contributes decisively to changing the perspective of understanding the nature and the meanings of theatre, the present paper aims to highlight and briefly analyze the most relevant stages of his research. His studies focused on identifying a universal language of theatre reveal key concepts and notions such as the empty space, the visible and the invisible, the holy and the rough in the immediate, the diversity, the homogeneous group, the storyteller with many heads in which still nowadays theatre scholars and practitioners are interested. At the same time, certain results of his research are exploited in his performances in which the emphasis is placed on the scenic presence of the actor, and which denote both a continuous experimentation of scenic forms and a personal way of speaking about truth in the theatre.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper focuses on the study of landscape quality of Moroccan Mediterranean coastal areas, with a view to distinguishing exceptional beaches with high scenic value. The main characteristics of 50 beaches along the studied coast were assessed using a coastal scenic evaluation system based on a set of 26 selected parameters, including physical (18) and human (8) parameters. Each parameter was examined via a five-point rating scale, ranging from presence/absence or poor quality (1) to excellent quality (5). A decision index (D) is afterward obtained and used to classify sites into five classes: Class I: D ≥ 0.85, which included 9 sites (18%); Class II: 0.85 > D ≥ 0.65, 10 sites (20%); Class III: 0.65 > D ≥ 0.40, 8 sites (16%); Class IV: 0.40 > D ≥ 0.00, 16 sites (32%); and Class V: D < 0.00, 7 sites (14%). The sites of Belyounech 2, Maresdar, El Hwad, and Dalya are the best examples of Class I and represent extremely attractive coastal landscapes. The sites of Ghandouri, Tangier Municipal, M’Diq, Martil, and Tangier Malabata are examples of degraded urban sites that are very unattractive due to high human pressures. Management efforts in Moroccan coastal landscapes can strengthen the control of human activities and improve the scenic value of the sites. Class II beaches, such as Mrisat, Souani, Taourirt, and Sfiha, could improve and upgrade to Class I through litter cleaning and a regular maintenance program. Using the same principle, Class III sites, such as Sidi Amer O Moussa and Sidi Driss, could improve and upgrade to Class II. Indeed, litter and sewage appear as the main factors of degradation of Moroccan coasts, and many excellent beaches are strongly affected by them. This should be a wakeup call to the Moroccan authorities to take urgent and appropriate management measures.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper concentrates on the autofiction in drama, which is a very peculiar procedure much distinct of the autofiction in the novel. This is due to the scenic representation, the actor’s presence, and other intrinsic characteristics of the dramatic genre, making that the reader or the spectator views the border between fiction and reality in a very particular way. Regarding the character Vicente, present on three plays of the Brazilian playwright Jorge Andrade and who we focus on our discussion, we propose to consider it as an autofictional character, despite its status of autobiographical by the criticism and by the author himself.

Abstract (sommario):
The following dissertation discusses pedagogical strategies used by three teachers of dance to make their pupils obtain scenic presence. The empirical material was constituted by a few observations of classes of dance teachers (Dagmar Scherer Dornelles, Luciana Paludo and Simonne Rorato) of Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil, in the form of a ethnographic journal. Eight lessons of each teacher had been observed, carried through an interview with each one of them. It was made a photographic register. The text analyzes those pedagogical strategies - considered as a way to obtain scenic presence - from three axles: 1. everyday and ritualized actions as observed in the lessons; 2. the consciousness as a way to the presence - that would be obtained from the use of different cares with the body; and, 3. other kinds of strategies - not only technical. The text suggests that the pedagogical strategies used by those three teachers of dance designs contemporary forms of being dance teacher.

Abstract (sommario):

This dissertation aims to show how it is the presentification of the scenic direction in dance on the creative process of Acasos Dance Company's spectacle, Sopro, of 2014. This is done through the poeticpedagogical processes, situated as the strategies and ways of working that have been used in the construction of this spectacle from from a collective direction format. To this end it was held monitoring of the creative process of Sopro with strategies and instruments of the ethnographic method as the interview and participant observation. This added to the feature of being a work in which the researcher is involved in the search field, enhances the adoption of autobiographical tone thought from the Autoetnografia. To position the poeticpedagogical processes as agents of direction's presence in dance and the will of contact with the things of the world that accompanies the Sopro spectacle, it was used the understanding of Production of presence of Gumbrecht (2010).It is expected that the collective direction can be thought in a pedagogy of expression through poeticpedagogical processes, which put into evidence a dance pedagogy, that occurs in the making with powerful creative possibilities and developments of trading relations and of acquaintanceship in a collectivity. And that way, could be tried in other scenery- not only in independent dance companies as Acasos - but in other artistic works or even in a formal education.

The present research intends to reflect on actor’s types of presence in theatre from the fusion with the cinematographic language. Under the actor’s point of view, it was researched a new dimension of his presence on stage, characterized by the use of camera and microphone. To this end, the study begins with a short history of theatre during the rise of cinema so as to contextualize the studies and reflections contained in future chapters, which present technological advances culminating in the present day. In studying the possibilities of this “theatre-cinema”, the research focuses on relationships between actors, cameras, and projections, as well as investigating possible forms of presence that both cinema and theatre explore, and that enable new relations between actors and spectators to be formed. The study examines the following scenic productions: "E se elas fossem para Moscou?" by Christiane Jatahy; "King of War", by Ivo Van Hove; "Le Projet Andersen", by Robert Lepage; "The Tempest", by 4DArt; and "Eraritjaritjaka", by Heiner Goebbels. The choice of productions is based on different forms of capturing and projecting video images, which allow for distinct modes of presence and of interaction between actors, cameras, and spectators. Finally, the research also aims to supply analytic tools toward the investigation of new possibilities of this “theatre-cinema” and of tendencies that will arise in the near future, based on technological evolution and technical diversification.

In this paper I develops a critical and reflective analysis of the development of the scenic area and the presence of the actor and the spectator from the use of information and communication technologies. I adopt as an axis for reflection delimiter assumption that today is defining a theatrical event - the presence of at least one actor and spectator states in a given space unite by a tacit agreement. Based on that assumption I do a relation about concepts and definitions relative to digital information technologies (virtual reality, virtuality, telepresence and cyberspace) with the elements of theater and their applicability in theatrical art. I analyze examples of plays built on the perspective of digital and mediatic theater and finally i propose two characteristics of a possible digital theater.

Abstract (sommario):
This research, of a theoretical-practical nature, introduces the register of the technical preparations\' proceedings and production of the Odin Teatret director and actors, from the viewpoint of the Theatre Anthropology, and it pursuits the notions of scenic presence and the actors\' autonomy. Based on the experience of its actors\' tradition, and on a documentation held in fieldwork, about training and creation widespread by them, applied techniques are selected, described and experimented in the pre-expressive preparation and in a personal-scenic composition. In the literature review, it establishes a dialogue with the lineage of directors-pedagogues from the 20th Century, such as Stanislavski and Grotowski, and with scholars and critics of the Theatre Anthropology. In the approximation of the presence concept, it brings Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht to introduce dramaturgy notions used by Eugenio Barba. The registers and analysis rely on assumptions of the qualitative research using autoethnography to its organization. The identification of the proceedings maps the updated applications of the Odin Teatret\'s traditions. Lastly, it evidences the course of stimuli personalization, its pedagogical application and the material production process in the actress-researcher\'s dramaturgy. By its agents, the research allowed to ascertain the notions it searched about the technical work and the actor\'s autonomy process

Abstract (sommario):
The objective of the study was to determine how visitors perceive park management method alternatives to preserve scenic beauty in Mounds State Park, and how other factors, such asvisitor characteristics and primary purpose for visiting the state park affected their preferences. Additionally, this study has presented a comparison of preferences for park management approaches between park managers and visitors, and a relationship between visitors' perceptions of scenic beauty and other factors. Furthermore, this study explored the contribution of a qualitative analysis. The result showed that visitor preferences for some park management approaches were influenced by sociodemographic characteristics, while visitor preferences for other park management approaches were influenced by the current state of scenic conditions in the park. Differences were observed between park manager's perceptions and visitors' perceptions. Visitors' perceptions of scenic beauty were related to whether or not they had visited the park in the past. Finally, it was clear that qualitative analysis was worthwhile for obtaining information that quantitative data could not provide.

Silk, Simon. "High Dynamic Range Panoramic Imaging with Scene Motion". Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/20394.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Real-world radiance values can range over eight orders of magnitude from starlight to direct sunlight but few digital cameras capture more than three orders in a single Low Dynamic Range (LDR) image. We approach this problem using established High Dynamic Range (HDR) techniques in which multiple images are captured with different exposure times so that all portions of the scene are correctly exposed at least once. These images are then combined to create an HDR image capturing the full range of the scene. HDR capture introduces new challenges; movement in the scene creates faded copies of moving objects, referred to as ghosts. Many techniques have been introduced to handle ghosting, but typically they either address specific types of ghosting, or are computationally very expensive. We address ghosting by first detecting moving objects, then reducing their contribution to the final composite on a frame-by-frame basis. The detection of motion is addressed by performing change detection on exposure-normalized images. Additional special cases are developed based on a priori knowledge of the changing exposures; for example, if exposure is increasing every shot, then any decrease in intensity in the LDR images is a strong indicator of motion. Recent Superpixel over-segmentation techniques are used to refine the detection. We also propose a novel solution for areas that see motion throughout the capture, such as foliage blowing in the wind. Such areas are detected as always moving, and are replaced with information from a single input image, and the replacement of corrupted regions can be tailored to the scenario. We present our approach in the context of a panoramic tele-presence system. Tele-presence systems allow a user to experience a remote environment, aiming to create a realistic sense of "being there" and such a system should therefore provide a high quality visual rendition of the environment. Furthermore, panoramas, by virtue of capturing a greater proportion of a real-world scene, are often exposed to a greater dynamic range than standard photographs. Both facets of this system therefore stand to benefit from HDR imaging techniques. We demonstrate the success of our approach on multiple challenging ghosting scenarios, and compare our results with state-of-the-art methods previously proposed. We also demonstrate computational savings over these methods.

Abstract (sommario):
The present study aims to analyze the literary work of authors who are part of the Literatura Marginal (Literature from the Outside) as a way to understand the chief aspects of this movement’s writing style as well as its main political characteristics. From this perspective, the productions of the periferia discourse will be understood as counter-hegemonic manifestations that originate from an effort to produce a specific view that reflects the marginalized experience, thus silencing any other discourse produced outside of the periferia space. To this end, we developed a theoretical outline that brings an understanding of the kinds of political engagement produced by this group. In addition to examining the literary product itself, this study considers the parallels between this type of narrative and the Hip-Hop movement, more specifically Rap, highlighting the many similarities between them as they relate to the structure of the writing and the way the discourse is disseminated, aiming at the conscientization of readers/listeners. Because this relates to an uncommon literary experience, the presence of periferia writers in our literary series also raises new questions about the role of the intellectual. If before it was the intellectual who acted as the spokesperson for these writers, now the outsiders themselves break with the passive role of objects and claim their place as protagonists. In bringing a critical view to this debate it is possible to identify the tensions that the periferia authors bring to this discussion.

Abstract (sommario):

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
American folk music has long presented a problematic conception of authenticity, but the reality of the folk scene, and its relationship to media, is far more complicated. This book draws on the fields of media archaeology, performance studies, and sound studies to explore the various modes of communication that can be uncovered from the long American folk revival. From Alan Lomax's cybernetic visions to Bob Dylan's noisy writing machines, this book retrieves a subterranean discourse on the concept of media that might help us to reimagine the potential of the networks in which we work, play, and sing.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractCancer screening aims to interfere with disease progression by detecting cancer at a point in its natural history when it is either curable or, if not curable, when treatment will extend life beyond what it would have been in the absence of cancer screening. A simple, four phase model of cancer progression is presented in Chap. 2 and is used to demonstrate how the natural history of cancer is perturbed in the presence of cancer screening. Lead time, length-weighted sampling, and overdiagnosis, three phenomena that are frequently discussed in the context of cancer screening, are defined. Examples are presented to assist in comprehension of the impact of the phenomena.

Abstract (sommario):
In recent years, speech interfaces have been proposed for making shopping order or restaurant reservations while transmitting information only by speech. It is easy to imagine that such a system will be installed in cars soon. However, to use the speech interface that can realize such tasks while the driver is driving, the system needs to understand the driving situation of the driver and control the speech guide timing accordingly. We focused on the fact that there are scenes (SCD: Scenes of Concentrate Driving) where the driver temporarily interrupts the speech operation unconsciously to concentrate on driving operations. However, one does not yet know in which scenes the voice dialogue becomes a burden. In this study, we identified driving scenes where dialogue is a burden (SCD), clarified the relationship between SCD and driving behavior, and considered a method to estimate SCD automatically. In this research, we define SCD as a situation in which the driver temporarily suspends the speech operation and wants to perform only the driving operation, although the system can perform both the speech operation and the driving operation. Under SCD circumstances, even if the speech interface presents some guidance, the driver can not understand its contents. Also, even if the system prompts for an answer by speech input, the driver does not answer. To confirm the existence of SCD, we have created nine driving scenes that require different driving operations (lane change, overtaking, narrow road, right turn, etc.) and reproduced these scenes using a Driving Simulator (DS). We also created some tasks to prompt the driver's voice input, and present them just before the driving scene, such we could check whether the driver interrupts or not the dialogue during the driving operations needed to pass the scene. We recorded speech and collected driving signals (steering angle, throttle opening, etc.) for 15 men and women in their 20s (11 men and 4 women) with a driver's license. First, for each driving scene, we checked whether the driver could answer the immediately preceding question presented by an operator and confirms that SCD occurs in various driving scenes. In the driving scenes involving lane change, the utterance was interrupted for more than 40% of the tasks. On the other hand, in the driving scenes in which the driver steers left and right curves, while driving in the same lane as the preceding vehicle, the utterance was seldom interrupted. These results confirm the existence of driving scenes in which speech is likely to be interrupted, that is, SCD. Next, we considered a machine learning model to estimate the occurrence of SCD automatically, using only the driving signal. We compared the classification accuracy of SCD occurrence according to several analysis window lengths, from 0.5seconds to 5 seconds with a 0.5seconds increment. The results showed that a trained Support Vector Machine (SVM) could provide a classification accuracy of about to 85% for two classes (SCD or not), and 82% for three classes (SCD, semi-SCD, regular) with a window size of 2seconds.

Abstract (sommario):
In recent years, scents have been increasingly used in various situations as stimulants in addition to content, such as in 4DX movie screenings and as original aromas to enhance brand images. Research on scents has also garnered interest; a study conducted at a casino in Las Vegas reported that creating specific scents around the slot machines increased the input number of coins by approximately 45%, and research on the effects of lighting or scent have suggested that scents may influence purchase motivations. The olfactory brain that is responsible for the sense of smell overlaps with the emotional brain that is responsible for emotions and is believed to contribute greatly to its development. The sense of smell is considered to have stronger connections to emotions than the other senses, and there is growing interest in the use of scents to manipulate psychological states into desired states. We experimentally evaluated the relationships between emotional changes caused by scents and image evaluations. Further, we obtained the image evaluation impressions and quantified the influences of scent on selection and evaluation. In order to evaluate the differences in selection, we focused on the categories of images. We prepared five categories of images: sweets, fruits, flowers, nature, and indoor images, and asked the participants to select images that did not overlap the categories. An evaluation index was created based on the harmony of the fragrance with the impression of the image. The results showed that there was a positive correlation between the change in the selection rate and the harmony with the fragrance in each category. This suggests that the presentation of scents gives a better impression to images that have a high degree of harmony with scents. To assess the effects of emotion induction by scent presentation on evaluation of image impressions, we conducted experiments for image impression evaluations by presenting scents to 10 healthy male participants in their 20s (22.3±1.3 years) with no known olfactory abnormalities. The ambient air was scented using a bubbling method and supplied through a nasal cannula. We used peppermint essential oil, which has different pleasant and unpleasant emotion associations depending on participant experiences and presented it at a concentration of 1%. The Japanese version of the POMS2 (short version) assessments were used for subjective evaluations of emotion induction, and the emotion changes was evaluated from the differences in scores before and after the experiments. To objectively evaluate emotions, we used a measure the volumetric pulse waveforms from the participant fingertips as well as sweating characteristics. Subjective evaluations of the scent were conducted after completion of the impression evaluations for two items, namely "pleasant-unpleasant" and "arousing-sedating". Two pleasant images, one neutral image, and two unpleasant images were selected based on subjective emotional valences. In the impression evaluation experiment that focused on changes in emotions, a positive correlation was observed between changes in images and scent sensitivity evaluations for positive images, and a negative correlation was similarly identified for negative images.

Abstract (sommario):
State-of-the-art scene text detection techniques predict quadrilateral boxes that are prone to localization errors while dealing with straight or curved text lines of different orientations and lengths in scenes. This paper presents a novel multi-scale shape regression network (MSR) that is capable of locating text lines of different lengths, shapes and curvatures in scenes. The proposed MSR detects scene texts by predicting dense text boundary points that inherently capture the location and shape of text lines accurately and are also more tolerant to the variation of text line length as compared with the state of the arts using proposals or segmentation. Additionally, the multi-scale network extracts and fuses features at different scales which demonstrates superb tolerance to the text scale variation. Extensive experiments over several public datasets show that the proposed MSR obtains superior detection performance for both curved and straight text lines of different lengths and orientations.

Abstract (sommario):
Spatial representation capable of learning a myriad of environmental features is a significant challenge for natural spatial understanding of mobile AI agents. Deep generative models have the potential of discovering rich representations of observed 3D scenes. However, previous approaches have been mainly evaluated on simple environments, or focused only on high-resolution rendering of small-scale scenes, hampering generalization of the representations to various spatial variability. To address this, we present PlaceNet, a neural representation that learns through random observations in a self-supervised manner, and represents observed scenes with triplet attention using visual, topographic, and semantic cues. We evaluate the proposed method on a large-scale multimodal scene dataset consisting of 120 million indoor scenes, and show that PlaceNet successfully generalizes to various environments with lower training loss, higher image quality and structural similarity of predicted scenes, compared to a competitive baseline model. Additionally, analyses of the representations demonstrate that PlaceNet activates more specialized and larger numbers of kernels in the spatial representation, capturing multimodal spatial properties in complex environments.

Abstract (sommario):
The paper presents the results of a study of the possibility of implementing an effective and physically correct stochastic ray tracing in gradient media based on the Runge-Kutta method. For implementation in the photorealistic rendering system, the specifics of the ray tracing method in complex three-dimensional scenes were considered. One of the main features of ray tracing in geometrically complex scenes is the large volume of geometric primitives that need to be tested for the intersection of the ray segment with the primitives. A method of ray propagation in voxel space of the scene is proposed. The method allows significant speeding up the process of searching for ray intersections with geometry primitives. To implement these ray tracing features the special program interface for gradient media was proposed, which can become the basic interface for a media of all types. Methods for calculating the luminance of all lighting components in gradient media were considered. The results of modeling the propagation of rays and image synthesis in a fiber with a refractive index gradient are presented.

Abstract (sommario):
The technology of modeling various situations in virtual environment systems, which are computer tree-dimensional models of a real or artificial environment, is considered. The user can view these scenes directly on the computer screen, wall screen, stereo glasses, virtual reality glasses, etc. He can also move inside a virtual scene and interact with its objects. In turn, the environment can also change. This allows modeling of various situations (situational modeling) in the virtual environment system. With such modeling, some static or dynamic situation is set in the virtual environment system in which the operator must perform the tasks assigned to him. A mechanism for setting situations by changing a virtual three-dimensional scene using configuration files and virtual control panels is proposed. A special language and editor has been developed for writing configuration files and for creating virtual control panels. The approbation of the proposed methods is presented on the example of two virtual scenes: a training ground for mobile robots and a jet backpack of an astronaut in outer space.

Abstract Single Contact Electron Beam Induced Current (SCEBIC) microscopy, a new junction imaging technique suitable for visualization of unconnected pn junctions in integrated circuits is presented. By using the substrate contact alone of a die, the SCEBIC approach eliminates the need to connect a junction to the imaging electronics as is done in the conventional Electron Beam Induced Current (EBIC) technique. The principles of SCEBIC are discussed and experimental data which validate the SCEBIC approach for imaging of pn junctions is presented. Examples of SCEBIC images are presented and applications of SCEBIC microscopy in IC failure analysis are discussed.

Abstract Head mounted displays (HMDs) are common hardware in a virtual reality environment. Sensors are commonly installed on the helmet to provide information about where the operator is looking. If the operator rotates the helmet, the virtual scene should rotate correspondingly. If the point of rotation (POR) of the operator’s head differs from the POR used to transform the image, the display may behave in bizarre ways. In “enhanced reality” and similar applications the virtual scene must also accurately correspond to the real world. When the virtual scene must accurately correspond to a real scene, it becomes necessary to accurately match the virtual display to the real world. A method for automatically collecting data to align these scenes is described and demonstrated in this paper. A theoretical basis for the method and experimental data are presented. Results indicate that the underlying assumptions of the theory are reasonable and that the errors in the method are reasonable.

Abstract (sommario):
Invasive exotic plant (IEP) species are a significant threat to natural ecosystem integrity and biodiversity, and controlling them is a high priority for the National Park Service. The North-ern Colorado Plateau Network (NCPN) selected the early detection of IEPs as one of 11 monitoring protocols to be implemented as part of its long-term monitoring program. From May 30 to June 1, 2019, network staff conducted surveys for priority IEP species along the Scenic Drive and Cathedral Valley Road monitoring routes at Capitol Reef National Park. We detected 119 patches of six priority IEP species along 34 kilometers of the two monitor-ing routes. There were more patches of IEPs, and a higher percentage of large patches, than in previous years. This indicates that previously identified infestations have expanded and grown. The most common (47.1%) patch size among priority species was 1,000–2,000 m2 (0.25–0.5 acre). The vast majority (93.2%) of priority patches ranked either low (58.8%) or very low (34.4%) on the patch management index scale. Tamarisk (Tamarix sp., 72 patches) was the most prevalent priority IEP species. African mustard (Malcolmia africana, 32 patch-es), field bindweed (Convolvulus arvensis, 9 patches), and Russian olive (Elaeagnus angusti-folia, 3 patches) occurred less commonly. Together, these four species represented 97.5% of all patches recorded in 2019. Four IEP species were found on the monitored routes for the first time: Russian olive (Elaeagnus angustifolia), quackgrass (Elymus repens), Siberian elm (Ulmus pumila), and African mustard (Malcolmia africana, not on the priority species list before 2019). Cathedral Valley Road had higher IEP priority patches per kilometer (5.68) than the Scenic Drive (2.05). IEP species were found on 37.9% (25 of 66) of monitored transects. Almost all these detections were Russian thistle (Salsola sp.). Russian thistle was widespread, present in 33.3% of transects, with an estimated cover of 0.2% across all transects sampled. Across routes monitored in all three rotations (2012, 2015, and 2019), Russian thistle has increased in frequency. However, its frequency remained about the same from 2015 to 2019, and percent cover remains low. Tamarisk and field bindweed have both increased in preva-lence since monitoring began, with tamarisk showing a dramatic increase in the number and size of patches. Immediate control of tamarisk and these other species is recommended to reduce their numbers on these routes. The NCPN plans to Capitol Reef in 2020 to monitor Oak and Pleasant creeks, completing the third rotation of invasive plant monitoring.

Abstract (sommario):
The UK is seeing growing interest in alternative protein sources to traditional animal-based proteins such as beef, lamb, pork, poultry, fish, eggs, and dairy. There is already an extensive market in alternative protein materials, however, technological advances combined with the pressure for more sustainable sources of protein has led to an acceleration of innovation and product development and the introduction of a large amount of new alternative protein ingredients and products to the market. These have the potential to dramatically impact on the UK food system. This report is a combination of desk research, based on thorough review of the academic and non-academic literature and of the alternative proteins start-up scene, and presents an analysis of the emerging market for alternative proteins, the potential implications and the potential policy responses that the FSA might need to consider. Four main categories of alternative proteins are presented and reviewed in this report: Plant-based meat substitutes Novel protein sources Proteins and biomass biosynthesised by microorganisms Cultured meat

Abstract (sommario):
The NIJ Technology Working Group’s Operational Requirements (TWG ORs) for Fire and Arson Investigation have included several scientific research needs that require knowledge of the thermophysical properties of materials that are common in the built environment, and therefore likely to be involved in a fire scene. The specific areas of research include: adequate materials property data inputs for accurate computer models, understanding the effect of materials properties on the development and interpretation of fire patterns, and evaluation of incident heat flux profiles to walls and neighboring items in support of fire model validation. These topics certainly address, in a concise way, many of the gaps that limit the analysis capability of fire investigators and engineers. Each of the three aforementioned research topics rely, in part, on accurate knowledge of the physical conditions of a material prior to the fire, how the material will respond to the exposure of heat, and how it will perform once it has ignited. This general information is required to visually assess a fire scene. The same information is needed by investigators to estimate the evolution and consequences of a fire incident using a computer model. Data sources that are currently most commonly used to determine the required properties and model inputs are outdated and incomplete. This report includes the literature review used to provide a technical approach to developing a materials database for use in fire investigations and computational fire models. A summary of the input from the project technical panel is presented which guided the initial selection of materials to be included in the database as well as the selection of test measurements.

Abstract (sommario):
On September 3, 2018, two career Fire Lieutenants and two career Firefighters suffered burn injuries as a result of a residential structure fire. On September 10, 2018, personnel representing several other fire departments in the area, including a member of the Fire Safety Research Institute (FSRI) Advisory Board visited the fire scene to document the incident and collect material samples from the structure. The narrative and analysis presented in this report rely on the photographs and evidence collected on September 10, 2018, dispatch transcript [5] and videos recorded at the time of the incident, and interviews conducted by a local investigator between September 3, 2018 and September 7, 2018 with fire service personnel involved in the incident and the resident of the structure [6]. The LaGrange Fire Department invited FSRI to study this incident as part of FSRI’s Near-Miss Project which is supported by a DHS/FEMA Assistance to Firefighters Grant. The goal of this project is to enhance the safety and situational awareness of the fire service by applying fire dynamics research results to near-miss or line of duty injury fire incidents. By identifying factors that contributed to the incident, perhaps future incidents may be prevented. FSRI’s analysis of this incident will apply research results and utilize fire research tools, such as computer fire models, to examine key fire phenomena and tactical outcomes. This report will explain the incident, what occurred, why it occurred, and what can be done differently in the future to result in a more favorable outcome

Abstract (sommario):
Theodore Roosevelt National Park (THRO) in western North Dakota was established for its historical connections with President Theodore Roosevelt. It contains not only historical and cultural resources, but abundant natural resources as well. Among these is one of the best geological and paleontological records of the Paleocene Epoch (66 to 56 million years ago) of any park in the National Park System. The Paleocene Epoch is of great scientific interest due to the great mass extinction that occurred at its opening (the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event), and the unusual climatic event that began at the end of the epoch (the Paleocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum, an anomalous global temperature spike). It is during the Paleocene that mammals began to diversify and move into the large-bodied niches vacated by dinosaurs. The rocks exposed at THRO preserve the latter part of the Paleocene, when mammals were proliferating and crocodiles were the largest predators. Western North Dakota was warmer and wetter with swampy forests; today these are preserved as the “petrified forests” that are one of THRO’s notable features. Despite abundant fossil resources, THRO has not historically been a scene of significant paleontological exploration. For example, the fossil forests have only had one published scientific description, and that report focused on the associated paleosols (“fossil soils”). The widespread petrified wood of the area has been known since at least the 19th century and was considered significant enough to be a tourist draw in the decades leading up to the establishment of THRO in 1947. Paleontologists occasionally collected and described fossil specimens from the park over the next few decades, but the true extent of paleontological resources was not realized until a joint North Dakota Geological Survey–NPS investigation under John Hoganson and Johnathan Campbell between 1994–1996. This survey uncovered 400 paleontological localities within the park representing a variety of plant, invertebrate, vertebrate, and trace fossils. Limited investigation and occasional collection of noteworthy specimens took place over the next two decades. In 2020, a new two-year initiative to further document the park’s paleontological resources began. This inventory, which was the basis for this report, identified another 158 fossil localities, some yielding taxa not recorded by the previous survey. Additional specimens were collected from the surface, among them a partial skeleton of a choristodere (an extinct aquatic reptile), dental material of two mammal taxa not previously recorded at THRO, and the first bird track found at the park. The inventory also provided an assessment of an area scheduled for ground-disturbing maintenance. This inventory is intended to inform future paleontological resource research, management, protection, and interpretation at THRO. THRO’s bedrock geology is dominated by two Paleocene rock formations: the Bullion Creek Formation and the overlying Sentinel Butte Formation of the Fort Union Group. Weathering of these formations has produced the distinctive banded badlands seen in THRO today. These two formations were deposited under very different conditions than the current conditions of western North Dakota. In the Paleocene, the region was warm and wet, with a landscape dominated by swamps, lakes, and rivers. Great forests now represented by petrified wood grew throughout the area. Freshwater mollusks, fish, amphibians (including giant salamanders), turtles, choristoderes, and crocodilians abounded in the ancient wetlands, while a variety of mammals representing either extinct lineages or the early forebearers of modern groups inhabited the land. There is little representation of the next 56 million years at THRO. The only evidence we have of events in the park for most of these millions of years is isolated Neogene lag deposits and terrace gravel. Quaternary surficial deposits have yielded a few fossils...

An Affordable Tool Based on a Pedestrian-Vehicle Collision Model to Support the Fieldwork and Reconstruction. SAE International, agosto 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.4271/2022-01-5058.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
A free access tool based on a pedestrian-vehicle collision model is presented. The model allows for the qualitative and quantitative description of the entire dynamics of an event through pre-collision, collision, and post-collision segments. Furthermore, it enabled the determination of the magnitude of the initial speed of the vehicle before collision with a pedestrian and the location of the point of impact on the road where the accident occurred. The model inputs correlate to evidence collected at the scene, providing a platform checklist to assist investigators in their fieldwork. Additionally, the pre-collision segment allowed the investigators to develop an avoidability study to evaluate road safety. The model was validated by comparing the results with experimental cases developed with dummies, bodies, and reconstructed cases using statistical methods. It is shown that there is no significant difference, thus verifying its functionality. In addition, the tool is available as a mobile application (app) in Spanish and English, providing important affordability to investigators from some low- and middle-income countries.

Driving Confidence in a Connected Vehicle Environment: A Case Study of Expressway Work Zone. SAE International, dicembre 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.4271/2020-01-5210.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
At present, how the application of connected vehicle technology will affect drivers’ driving psychology needs to be explored. As an important part of driving psychology, driving confidence can guide drivers to operate calmly when facing a complex traffic environment, which has an important impact on reducing accident rates and improving traffic efficiency. Based on the driving behavior data in the expressway work zone under a connected vehicle environment, this study mainly analyzed the difference between the psychological characteristics of drivers with warning information or without warning information when facing the work zone ahead. Firstly, based on driving simulation technology, the expressway work zone scene in a connected vehicle environment was designed, and the on-board human-machine interface was used to provide warning information of the work zone ahead. Secondly, the difference of drivers’ driving confidence in psychology when driving with or without warning information was analyzed by using the characteristics of average vehicle spatiotemporal diagram and gas pedal angle. Finally, a method of quantifying driving confidence was proposed, which used a kind of objective weighting method to get the weights between different indicators. Based on this method, drivers’ degree of driving confidence under two conditions was calculated. The results showed that connected vehicle technology could affect drivers’ driving confidence in psychology when facing the work zone ahead. In the connected vehicle environment, 82.9% of drivers’ degree of driving confidence would increase, and the average degree of driving confidence with warning information was 10.9% higher than that without warning information.
