Abstract (sommario):
The research has been all about evaluating the link between scars and wearable art. The scope of this research is quite broad, and it helps people to explore positions from different perspectives. For this purpose, secondary data intervention with the help of qualitative data has been provided. The focus towards secondary data collection has involved the contribution made by victims of certain scars. This paper explored the relationship between scar and wearable art from different cultural backgrounds, medicine, anthropology, philosophy, psychology and other fields. However, it has been depicted that the link between scars and wearable art is quite strong. Still, there is a certain degree of complacency and dependency on external factors such as the perception of the society and element psychological well-being of the entities. Moreover, gender-related factors and the role of age are also very important in the impact of wearable art, and social pressure and social support also play an important role.

Abstract (sommario):
This study explores the eco-artivism of women's art collectives for ecological sustainability by looking at actor-networks, eco-art as a non-human actor, and women's art collective negotiations. In Indonesia, eco-artivism is used to raise ecological awareness and strengthen socio-environmental protests in the ecological crisis. To explain the relationship of ecological sustainability in the artistic works of women's art collectives, we underline the connection between ecofeminism and Actor-Network Theory (ANT). We used a case study method with the Perempuan Pengkaji Seni (PPS) community, an art collective of female artists, workers, and researchers based in East Java, Indonesia. We find that the eco-artivism of women’s art collectives is an attempt to make women and nature become active subjects. These efforts can be seen in three resulting themes: the PPS network as a women's art collective, eco-art from the scars left by natural disasters to the impact of industrialization, and the negotiation of PPS as a women’s art collective for environmental sustainability.

Abstract (sommario):
The Torres Strait is often in the research literature – unsurprisingly since it is not only a key area for early settlement but one where ancient and modern practice resonate. Rock art is a prominent archaeological source for the region – but not the only one. In this study the author shows how rock art interconnects with imagery on portable artefacts and scarification – scarring patterns on skin – to define cultural zones of the last few centuries in territories occupied by both horticulturalists and hunter-gatherers.

Abstract (sommario):
The article focuses on the phenomenon of soc-art as part of the parodic reimagining of socialist realism literature. It examines its secondary reception as part of the nostalgia of the 70s-80s of the 20th century, which is a lack, a hiatus, a non-realization, but a part of the past of thousands of people. The phenomenon is placed against the back-ground of Bulgarian literature and the story "The Anyuta Case" by the writer Alek Popov is drawn for analysis. This story shows the way in which Bulgarian literature in the 90s of the 20th century ironically and without a lack of nostalgia interprets the time of socialist realism and its values. The aesthetics of socialist realism are turned upside down, and the writer demonstrates all the insanity and idiocy of the reality he was called to reflect. Unlike the late 20th century Russian soc-art, which is perceived more nostalgically than ironically, this work from the late 20th century unambiguous-ly reveals the scars of a time that, despite the usual nostalgia of the generation, could not sound nostalgic.

Abstract (sommario):
Alterations in the mismatch repair (MMR) system result in genomic instability, neoantigen production, and immune response in cancer. There is evidence that gastroesophageal tumors with MMR deficiency may be susceptible to immune-checkpoint inhibitors treatment, especially in those presenting at advanced-stage disease. Although a number of biomarkers have been developed in histology-agnostic settings to assess MMR status, there is evidence that a tumor-specific testing approach would improve the selection of patients for immunotherapy. However, no testing methods have been developed specifically for gastroesophageal cancers so far. Here, we discuss the state of the art, current advances, and future perspectives of MMR-related biomarkers’ biologic and clinical role in gastroesophageal cancers.

Abstract (sommario):
Dutch director Sacha Polak’s Dirty God (2019) is the first narrative film with a female lead whose scars are real, and arguably the first to tackle the assumption that scars (especially on a woman’s body) are shameful or tragic. Vicky Knight, who plays Jade, a young woman rebuilding her life after an acid attack, has talked about the revelation of seeing her body on screen after enduring years of abuse because of her appearance. Polak ‘saved my life’ she says, by enabling her to see her scarred body as beautiful, ‘a piece of art.’ Like any art form, film has the potential to be transformative, and in interviews both Knight and Polak have repeatedly spoken of their work in those terms. This article uses Dirty God to think about what is at stake in the dismantling of stereotypes and the reclamation of beauty — a goal shared by many disability rights campaigners. Made at a time when escalating cases of acid violence in London were making headlines around the world, Polak’s film prompts comparisons with Katie Piper’s Beautiful (2011) and other survivor memoirs. Privileging imperfection over repair and fragility over strength, it challenges existing portrayals of disfigurement and, in the process, offers a more radical understanding of beauty and authenticity.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractThis article examines images of revolution in Chinese artworks within a global context. It argues that the theme of revolution in Chinese art can be divided into three movements: (1) Art of Scars, (2) New Wave ’85, from which political pop art and cynical realism took their roots, and (3) the modern twenty-first century trend of Mao and the Cultural Revolution. An analysis of political pop art identified a synthesis of academic and iconographic features and Western philosophical concepts, which can be found in the semiotic elements of the painting Maozedong: AO. Its cynical realism is similar to the satire of the American painter in his Daughters of Revolution. Both artworks depict images of the "citizen" in an era of historical change. This analysis of the painting in the style of Mao and the Cultural Revolution offers a rethinking of traditional Chinese canons as a response to the Western religious traditions influenced by a multicultural environment. The data can be used as an additional source to examine symbolism and semiotics in the artistic language of Chinese artists representing the culture of revolution.

Abstract (sommario):
Through the use of mixed media, I explore imagery that reveals the trauma of returning combat veterans, of which I am one, as we try to reintegrate into a society that does not understand the war that still lingers within us. In my work, I depict emotional disturbances that are related to my personal encounters with war. My working process starts by referencing mainstream media imagery, which I juxtapose against harsh images inspired by veterans' drug and alcohol use, trauma and death. My black-and-white pixelated paintings feature the fragmented memories of a hostile combat environment, and although “Out of My Mind” depicts the chaotic emotions associated with PTSD, my whimsical style of illustration suggests a detachment from reality. Whether we call it shell shock, battle fatigue or PTSD, the war-related disorder is real. I want society to be aware of the hidden scars that our veterans carry with them. I do not anticipate my subject matter changing any time soon.

Sobopha, Mgcineni. "Skins, scars, blankets and blood : a pictorial response to the tensions and conflicts that arise from the representation and the practice of Ulwaluko in contemporary South Africa". Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/25960.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Ulwaluko (the subject of this study) is a Xhosa male initiation or rite of passage normally marked by elaborate ritual ceremonies and authenticated by circumcision. Human longing for ritual is deep, and in our contemporary culture is often frustrated. As an artist working in such an environment, my close association with these 'visible experiences' or contradictions in life has been the source and stimulus of my creative impulse. Ulwaluko is very close to me and an intensely personal aspect of my history and experience. It forms part of my identity and I ascertain very little distance between it and myself, if there can be any. It should be understood that this study is not an anthropological analysis of the Xhosa society and their cultural practices. Rather, it is a combination of autobiography and social commentary in which emphasis on first-hand experience is of primary importance for better understanding of the subject studied. This subjective experience also provides the basis, both conceptual and emotional, of the theoretical and creative process of this body of work. This project premises itself on the contentious issues around ulwaluko as practised by the Xhosa society, with particular reference to communities in Engcobo and Cape Town, and the tension in the creative work is rooted in the conflict and debate around this subject. An attempt is made to examine the impact of colonialism in the displacing and disrupting of this traditional Xhosa cultural practice. Basically, this study is a visual response to and an exploration of the tensions and conflicts that arise from the practice of ulwaluko and its representation in contemporary South Africa. And more important, it is a reflection of the struggle and the affirmation of the self in relation to my work as an artist. However, due to the complexity and sensitivity of this subject, I cannot generalise my understanding and experience of ulwaluko to be that of every Xhosa. The Xhosa people are not a homogeneous group as has been often perceived and discussed in various European discourses that are now under severe criticism by contemporary theorists such as Edward Said. It is a fact that people are different individuals, with dissimilar life experiences. Explaining other people's beliefs and feelings in an objective manner can seem to ignore or does not necessarily take into account, the personal value of emotions, of the joys and sorrows, and even of the transformation of the participants in the practice analysed. In recent years the practice and the visual representation of ulwaluko in South African society, by both 'insiders' and 'outsiders, has stirred concerns and provoked heated moral debates.

Abstract (sommario):
Master of Visual Arts
This Dissertation explores the metaphor of Ariadne’s thread in terms of interconnection, when an element from the everyday is used as a locus linking broader concepts of time and space. Such experiences and associations are reflected in the work of Louise Bourgeois, Eva Hesse, Doris Salcedo, Lucio Fontana, Richard Tuttle, Mona Hatoum, Simone Mangos, Anya Gallaccio and Yoshihiro Suda. In relation to my own work, the metaphor of interconnecting thread allows a sense of freedom and journey of discovery. My studio and related research are closely aligned in developing my understanding of interconnection, through my studio process of making and continuing experiences of looking at and interpreting others artists’ work.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This work analyses the birth and development of Chinese Scar Art of late 1970s and early 1980s. With the end of the Cultural Revolution and the death of Mao Zedong, China went through a period of political and social loosening. This was also reflected in art and literature: following the motto "Seek the truth from facts", new scenarios opened up in the Chinese artistic and literary panorama, especially thanks to the works produced by young people returning from the Down to the Countryside Movement launched by Mao Zedong in 1968. They left little more than teenagers, returned as adults after more than ten years of forced labour and oppression in the countryside, they found a completely changed society. Afterwards, artists began to wonder the reason of what they had experienced, exposing in their works the reality of what they had seen and lived. The advent of Scar Literature first, and Scar Art later, upset public opinion. Based on realism and developed mainly in Sichuan, Scar Art included various currents: the art of the so-called Sichuan School of Painting (Native Soil Art, Melancholy Youth Painting, Contemplative Painting) and Life-stream Art. By analysing the artworks of artists such as Gao Xiaohua, Cheng Conglin, Luo Zhongli, He Duoling, Ai Xuan, Chen Danqing, this thesis researches how they exposed, and then tried to heal, the deepest and most intimate scars of an entire generation, denouncing what they had experienced or saw during the Cultural Revolution.

Abstract (sommario):
A SCARA-robot that draws requires a high level of precision and accuracy. This project aims to build a three degree of freedom robot arm that uses inverse kinematics, to draw a picture that has been assigned to it. The project explores the robot’s accuracy as well as its speed. Several measurements were conducted during the project to assess the Robot Arm’s reliability. When the robot makes points in the same position several times, it achieves near-perfect precision, but it has trouble recreating the proper geometrics of the picture being drawn. It may be caused by a variety of factors, it is most likely caused by a play in the timing belt. When the robot performs a circular movement, the problem arises when one of the arms switches its direction. In this paper, the robot’s construction and programming are described.

Sonti, Vuyisile Matshawe. "Bullying of educators by learners : a pastoral challenge". Diss., University of Pretoria, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/61202.

Abstract (sommario):
Aims and objectives The aim of this study is to investigate the impact of bullying of educators by learners they teach, thereby make an effort to improve the methods of dealing with bullying in our schools by introducing a pastoral counselling approach to our schools. The objectives of the study were the following: • To journey with the bullied educators through method of positive deconstruction, so as to give a supportive system and to cease their pain of being shamed and belittled. • To develop a pastoral model to help bullying victims and perpetrators. • To avail to the educators another possible effective method to deal with bullying in our schools, "A formation of pastoral model". • To combat the acts of violence in our society • To create awareness of bullying in our society. This qualitative study endeavoured to answer the following research questions: What is the impact of bullying on the educator? The other forms of bullying like verbal bullying, teasing and threats found hard to investigate, as at times it is the victim's word against the perpetrator's word. The research found that it's not easy to get witnesses, especially from learners. Cases of the bully acts normally get neglected, unless, they ended up being physical. Findings and recommendations The study, presented findings and recommendations. These were to be piloted in one school with the aim to get to buy in of the Department of Education, so to have this approach implemented in all schools and be incorporated in the already existing policies and programmes of intervention. The author aimed at assisting our Department of Education and schools with an alternative method that can improve interventions. The study was feasible, as it was easy to find former educators and learners for interviews and study cases. Not much information was found from schools due to protocol, red tape and right procedure given our schools by the Government as far as information related to learners in our schools. It would have been difficult to complete this study on time if the author was to wait for authorization. Financially the author had to rely on his congregational and diocesan support. The author being a former educator was able therefore to work with adults who are no longer at school but have experienced bullying as former learners and educators. The following points are in the authors mind, as he seeks to research on the bullied, the bullies and the bystander: • Physical bullying is the most feared form of bullying and educators felt it a challenge as they can't retaliate due to policy. • Cyber bullying is the most difficult form of bullying that is highly perpetuated against educators and caused internal wounds and scars that take very long to heal. • Sexual bullying is one of the causes of high pregnancy amongst girls in our school. • Drugs and alcohol are a catalyst to many boys who bully their educators

BALDHAGEN, FREDRIK, e ANTON HEDSTRÖM. "Chess Playing Robot : Robotic arm capable of playing chess". Thesis, KTH, Skolan för industriell teknik och management (ITM), 2020. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-279829.

Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of this thesis was to create a robot that through the use of visual recognition and robotics could play chess. The idea for this project came from the fact that there is an increasing demand for smart robots that can make their own decisions in a changing environment, and the fact that chess has recently seen a surge of new players. The optimal design of the arm making the moves was decided to be of SCARA type, which is a common robotic arm that excels in pick-and-place operations. The movement of the arm was driven by two stepper motors connected to a Raspberry Pi and an external power supply. Movement in the Z-direction was achieved through the use of a servo motor driving a gear rack vertically. A camera was placed above the chessboard, and through the use of numerous programs and functions, images were converted to chess notation which was then sent to a chess engine running on the Raspberry Pi. The visual recognition worked optimally when the chessboard was well and evenly lit. When lighting was poor, values that defined colors could be changed, allowing for proper evaluation of the colors, however when the illuminance dropped below 15 lux the blue pieces became indistinguishable from the black squares and therefore the visual recognition stopped working.

Isaacs, Sofie. "How hardwired are we against threats? : An EDA study comparing modern and evolutionary fear-relevant stimuli". Thesis, Högskolan i Skövde, Institutionen för biovetenskap, 2016. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:his:diva-13141.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The threat superiority effect refers to an ability to quickly and efficiently detect threatening cues in one’s environment. Hence, ensuing and appropriate behavioral defense responses entail greater chances of survival for an organism. Some researchers argue that natural selection has led us to automatically prioritize threats that would have been salient during the period of evolutionary adaptation; as for example snakes. However, others have also argued that activation of our defense response system is more flexible, thus able to also be triggered to dangers of more recent age: such as guns or airplane crashes. The present study has sought to impact this debate, by measuring the electrodermal activity (EDA) – more specifically the skin conductance responses (SCRs) – of subjects who were visually presented with both evolutionary (snakes and spiders) and modern (guns and knives) fear-relevant stimuli. The results demonstrated no significant difference between the two categories within subjects, suggesting that both evolutionary and modern threatening cues activate the defense response system in a similar manner. Although the results are preliminary, and would need further verification in higher powered studies, they can be seen to favor the view that our defense response system is flexibly adaptive in relation to the age of a given threat.

Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of this study was to provide a basis for understanding among Tech Prep and School-to-Work change agents, and educational leaders, of the role that Discipline-Based Art Education (DBAE) can perform as a part of the core curriculum, within the framework of these reform movements. The literature indicated that the federally supported Tech Prep and School-to-Work reform movements were not acquainted with DBAE reform initiative which were supported by the Getty Education Institute for the Arts through the work of Regional Institutes. Therefore, they had no ideas about the possible worth of art as an education core component. Also, DBAE was not acquainted with Tech Prep and School-to-Work and therefore had established no common terminology to communicate the power of what they do in a manner which was relevant to that audience. The DBAE Regional Institutes provided individuals to assist in the development and validation of the study tools, and to participate in the pilot study. The Regional Institutes also identified the 10 Discipline-Based Art Education experts who composed the national Delphi panel for the study. The findings were reported according to research questions. They show the national Delphi panels' perceptions of which SCANS skills can be developed by Content Standards and Performance Standards from the National Standards for [Visual] Arts Education. The study concluded that: 1) there is a relationship between the Content and Performance Standards taken from the National Standards for [Visual] Arts Education and the SCANS skills; 2) SCANS Basic skills, Thinking skills, Resources skills, Information skills and Systems skills could be developed through the achievement of the Performance Standards of the National Standards for [Visual] Arts Education; and 3) the relationship between the SCANS Workplace Know-How skills and the National Standards for [Visual] Art Education was validated by a national Delphi panel. Recommendations were made for DBAE, Tech Prep and School-to-Work, and Future Studies.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractGenital scarring is a topic rarely addressed and discussed in public. Scarring can occur after trauma, female genital mutilation/cutting, circumcision, tumor surgery, burns, infections, or local skin diseases, for example, lichen sclerosus et atrophicus. Genital skin anatomy and wound healing differ from other regions of the body. This chapter focuses on genital skin anatomy, the physiology of normal genital wound healing, the pathophysiology of genital scarring, and the current state-of-the-art for plastic surgical treatment of genital tissue defects and scars.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractThe Vancouver scar scale, the Manchester scar scale, and the Patient and Observer Scar Assessment Scale (POSAS) are all very well-known scar evaluation methods. These tools are based on a number of scar variables, including color, height, and pliability. However, since all were mainly developed to evaluate burn scars, they are difficult to use in clinical practice for keloids and hypertrophic scars. This is because these pathological scars require both differential diagnosis and a way to evaluate their response to therapy. The Japan Scar Workshop (JSW) has sought to develop a scar assessment scale that meets these clinical needs. The first version of this scar assessment tool was named the JSW scar scale (JSS), and it was reported in 2011. In 2015, the revised second version was reported. The JSS consists of two tables. One is a scar classification table that is used to determine whether the scar is a normal mature scar, a hypertrophic scar, or a keloid. This grading system helps the user to select the most appropriate treatment method for the scar. The other table in the JSS is an evaluation table that is used to judge the response to treatment and for follow-up. Both tables contain sample images of each subjective keloid/hypertrophic scar item that allow the user to evaluate each item without hesitation.

AbstractScars can be classified into immature scars and mature scars. Mature scars can be “normal,” atrophic, or hypertrophic. Keloids occur in patients with a genetic predisposition and behave differently than hypertrophic scars, although there can be a continuum in terms of appearance. The molecular mechanisms of scarring, hypertrophic scar and keloids, have been the subject of intensive research. There are still many unanswered questions.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractRecent improvements in burn care have resulted in greater patient survival of severe burns. With improved survival, treatment of the resulting permanent burn hypertrophic scars requires extensive care. Hypertrophic scarring occurs due to aberrations in the normal healing process, resulting in excessive inflammation and collagen deposition at the site of injury. These scars are accompanied by symptoms such as pain, pruritus, erythema, and limited mobility. The high scar prevalence in pediatric patients and accompanying physical, psychological, and social burden warrant a better understanding of the possible treatment options. Currently, several therapeutic strategies exist for hypertrophic scar management in the pediatric patient, although none are completely effective. Recently, laser therapy has emerged as a potential therapy for symptomatic relief and scar modulation. Here, we provide an up-to-date review of treatment options for hypertrophic scars in the pediatric population. In addition, we discuss a clinical case, outlining the potential merits of addition of laser therapy and surgical revision for the treatment of hypertrophic scars.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractWhile scarring in general can prove difficult to treat satisfactorily for physicians, specific locations of scarring can make this task even more difficult. Scarring on the scalp can result in alopecia which, especially in women and children, can be extremely stigmatizing. On the face and chest, scars lead to severe aesthetic impairments and commonly result in significantly reduced quality of life. If the hands, feet, or large joints are affected by severe scarring, functional problems can arise that, if most severe, put their self-reliance throughout their daily lives at risk. Therefore, finding solutions for such scarring is imperative.Finding the right technique to address a specific scar requires analysis of the problem. If scars are contracted, scar releases through local flaps (Z-plasty, W-plasty, and others) are common procedures. In widespread instable scars, large areas of tissue can be replaced by dermal substitutes and split-thickness skin grafting and full-thickness skin grafting or through the use of free tissue flaps. Additionally, fractional lasers provide the opportunity to soften scarred skin and to ameliorate the often irregular surface texture of such scars. For the treatment of problematic areas, combining different treatment options with regard to the individual requirements of the scar will commonly yield satisfactory results. Care should be taken to incorporate physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and conservative scar treatment paradigms to prevent future scarring in treated areas and to improve and conserve the reconstituted function in scarred areas.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractHypertrophic scars and keloids are common lesions caused by abnormal wound healing process. Especially in keloids, abnormal fibroblast activity and excessive synthesis of collagen is a histopathological hallmark in its pathogenesis. Due to heterogeneity of etiologies and clinical presentations, treatment of hypertrophic scars and keloids are often challenging. The response rate varies widely, depending on treatment modalities and the timing of therapeutic intervention. Corticosteroid is considered to be one of the best treatment options, yet paucity of information exists on its mechanism of action. It is mostly known to inhibit abnormal fibroblast proliferation leading to collagen synthesis and promote further degeneration of extracellular matrix. Intralesional injection of corticosteroid has been well advocated in the treatment of both hypertrophic scars and keloids. Locally delivered corticosteroid causes significant decrease in scar volume and ameliorates the symptoms of the scars such as pain and pruritus. However, the lesions are prone to localized adverse reactions upon repeated treatments. Therefore, appropriate use of steroids requires awareness of its mechanism of action in scar treatment.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractIn order to assess new and often costly treatments, the need for objective scar measurement tools has become increasingly important. A combination of subjective and objective measures should be the aim of every researcher. Quantitative assessment of scars requires devices to measure their physical and physiological properties. Physiological scar parameters are scar characteristics relevant to pathological scarring which cannot be seen with the bare eye. This also means that they can only be assessed with objective assessment tools.Skin hydration is defined as the water content of the epidermis and the dermis, and the ability of the skin to retain water is important to avoid dry appearance of the skin and prolonged inflammation in scarring. Many approaches exist to measure skin water content. One single method is often not enough to capture all the relevant information. Trans-epidermal water loss, stratum corneum water content, and dermal water content are equally important and related to each other.Scar maturation has been related to transcutaneous oxygen tension, and it is hypothesized that low levels of transcutaneous oxygen pressure in evolving scars result from low oxygen diffusibility through scar tissue.Tactile sensitivity of the skin can be measured by esthesiometers. The Semmes-Weinstein monofilament test is found to be a feasible and reliable outcome measure to evaluate touch perception threshold in older upper extremities burn scars.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractThe rehabilitation of burns and scars depends on the maturation of the scar tissue. During the inflammation stage, all the risks of scar contracture and functional scar sequelae happen. The therapists must anticipate and prevent the possible consequences of an immature tissue. Besides the postures and the correct positioning with specific splints, manual massages are part of scar treatment. They have to be applied by specialized therapists around the scar at first and progressively on the scar or burn scar while respecting the fragility and inflammation of the tissue. The most important being in the choice of the technique is to respect the cutaneous inflammation.

Abstract (sommario):
The quality of images obtained from video surveillance systems is a decisive aspect when performing investigations at the Forensic Science. Features such as scars, tattoos, and skin marks are great examples of details that allow to consolidate an investigation at certain scenarios in which there is the necessity to identify individuals captured in a video or image footage. However, the low quality of images could affect the results of the investigations. In this sense, this work proposes the study of a computational model to address the problem of increasing the resolution of Low-Resolution (LR) images, also known as the problem of super-resolution of images. The main idea is to train a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) so that it can be able to enhance low-quality images. The hypothesis is that a variant model of a GAN, named Super-Resolution Generative Adversarial Network (SRGAN), is capable to produce High-Resolution (HR) images from LR ones. The proposed methodology is based on experimental research with the aid of the hypothetical deductive method, where two well-recognised state of art methods were used, which proposes the use of convolutional neural networks and deep learning. For the model validation, were conducted four different experiments: two to avail the capacity of the GAN to produce images with enhanced resolution and two other experiments to evaluate the quality of the results produced by the SRGAN. The quantitative results of our experiments are promising, with performances that are similar to those obtained by state-of-the-art approaches. Moreover, the qualitative results based on performing a visual analysis of the images produced by our approach suggest a interesting performance in terms of visual quality.

Abstract (sommario):
Mechanics of healing myocardial infarcts are an important determinant of ventricular function. Large collagen fibers are the major contributors to the mechanical properties of healing scar. It has been suggested that an anisotropic structure, as observed in healing pig scars, may help preserve ventricular function, and that the alignment of collagen fibers could be guided by the regional mechanical environment in the infarct — in pig scars the alignment of collagen fibers was in the direction of greatest stretch [1]. By contrast, in the standard rat model of infarction we found that scars are structurally and mechanically isotropic at all time points in healing [2].

Abstract (sommario):
The Steel Catenary Riser (SCR) concept offers advantages over other riser concepts and has been widely deployed worldwide. The first deepwater SCR was installed in the Gulf of Mexico in 1994. Since then, more than 100 SCRs have been installed for many types of deepwater floaters (Spars, TLPs, SEMIs, and FPSOs) in the deepwater fields of West of Africa, the Gulf of Mexico (GoM), and Offshore Brazil. As the second of two companion papers, this paper presents the state-of-the-art of key analysis techniques of deepwater SCRs while the first paper addresses the design methodology [R. Song, P. Stanton, Ref. 4]. First of all, the procedure for analysis of deepwater SCRs is discussed and presented in more detail than given in the first paper and is also illustrated in an analysis flowchart. Wave theory applicable to deepwater SCR analysis and time domain vs. frequency domain analysis approaches are described and discussed. More focus is given to the strength analysis including discussion and comparison of regular wave and random wave approaches. Attention is paid to the vortex induced vibration (VIV) analysis including discussion of modal response analysis and VIV parameter selections. For SCRs on semisubmersibles and FPSOs, vessel heave-induced VIV needs to be taken into account, and a corresponding time-domain approach is presented. Similarly, for Spars and deep draft semisubmersibles, vortex-induced motion (VIM) fatigue damage of SCRs is discussed in more detail. Particular attention is also given to the analysis of SCR compression in the touch-down zone (TDZ) and corresponding acceptance criteria are presented. The application of fracture mechanics to engineering criticality assessment (ECA) is explored. Two examples of deepwater SCRs corresponding to a semi and a Spar are given to illustrate the presented methodology.

Abstract (sommario):
This map of fractures, scarps, faults, and landslides was completed to identify areas in Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve that may present a landslide-generated tsunami hazard. To address the potential of landslide and tsunami hazards in the park, the National Park Service (NPS) and the US Geological Survey (USGS) partnered to conduct a multi-year hazard assessment of Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve. To produce the map described in this report, we used the newly acquired (2019-2020) light detection and ranging (LiDAR) 0.5 to 1.0 m digital elevation models (DEMs) that cover all the coastal areas of the park and extend up to the ridgetops in places with steep slopes. A bare earth DEM was used to identify and map areas of incipient landslides (i.e., fractures and scarps), fault scarps, and areas where landslides have clearly occurred in the past (i.e., areas where scars and deposits are clearly visible). This map provides a baseline data set that can be used to aid forecasts of where landslides are most likely to occur in the future.

Abstract (sommario):
Accurate identification of the relationships between permafrost extent and landscape patterns helps develop airborne geophysical or remote sensing tools to map permafrost in remote locations or across large areas. These tools are particularly applicable in discontinuous permafrost where climate warming or disturbances such as human development or fire can lead to rapid permafrost degradation. We linked field-based geophysical, point-scale, and imagery surveying measurements to map permafrost at five fire scars on the Tanana Flats in central Alaska. Ground-based elevation surveys, seasonal thaw-depth profiles, and electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) measurements were combined with airborne imagery and light detection and ranging (LiDAR) to identify relationships between permafrost geomorphology and elapsed time since fire disturbance. ERT was a robust technique for mapping the presence or absence of permafrost because of the marked difference in resistivity values for frozen versus unfrozen material. There was no clear relationship between elapsed time since fire and permafrost extent at our sites. The transition zone boundaries between permafrost soils and unfrozen soils in the collapse-scar bogs at our sites had complex and unpredictable morphologies, suggesting attempts to quantify the presence or absence of permafrost using aerial measurements alone could lead to incomplete results. The results from our study indicated limitations in being able to apply airborne surveying measurements at the landscape scale toward accurately estimating permafrost extent.

Brophy, Kenny, e Alison Sheridan, a cura di. Neolithic Scotland: ScARF Panel Report. Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, giugno 2012. http://dx.doi.org/10.9750/scarf.06.2012.196.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The main recommendations of the Panel report can be summarised as follows: The Overall Picture: more needs to be understood about the process of acculturation of indigenous communities; about the Atlantic, Breton strand of Neolithisation; about the ‘how and why’ of the spread of Grooved Ware use and its associated practices and traditions; and about reactions to Continental Beaker novelties which appeared from the 25th century. The Detailed Picture: Our understanding of developments in different parts of Scotland is very uneven, with Shetland and the north-west mainland being in particular need of targeted research. Also, here and elsewhere in Scotland, the chronology of developments needs to be clarified, especially as regards developments in the Hebrides. Lifeways and Lifestyles: Research needs to be directed towards filling the substantial gaps in our understanding of: i) subsistence strategies; ii) landscape use (including issues of population size and distribution); iii) environmental change and its consequences – and in particular issues of sea level rise, peat formation and woodland regeneration; and iv) the nature and organisation of the places where people lived; and to track changes over time in all of these. Material Culture and Use of Resources: In addition to fine-tuning our characterisation of material culture and resource use (and its changes over the course of the Neolithic), we need to apply a wider range of analytical approaches in order to discover more about manufacture and use. Some basic questions still need to be addressed (e.g. the chronology of felsite use in Shetland; what kind of pottery was in use, c 3000–2500, in areas where Grooved Ware was not used, etc.) and are outlined in the relevant section of the document. Our knowledge of organic artefacts is very limited, so research in waterlogged contexts is desirable. Identity, Society, Belief Systems: Basic questions about the organisation of society need to be addressed: are we dealing with communities that started out as egalitarian, but (in some regions) became socially differentiated? Can we identify acculturated indigenous people? How much mobility, and what kind of mobility, was there at different times during the Neolithic? And our chronology of certain monument types and key sites (including the Ring of Brodgar, despite its recent excavation) requires to be clarified, especially since we now know that certain types of monument (including Clava cairns) were not built during the Neolithic. The way in which certain types of site (e.g. large palisaded enclosures) were used remains to be clarified. Research and methodological issues: There is still much ignorance of the results of past and current research, so more effective means of dissemination are required. Basic inventory information (e.g. the Scottish Human Remains Database) needs to be compiled, and Canmore and museum database information needs to be updated and expanded – and, where not already available online, placed online, preferably with a Scottish Neolithic e-hub that directs the enquirer to all the available sources of information. The Historic Scotland on-line radiocarbon date inventory needs to be resurrected and kept up to date. Under-used resources, including the rich aerial photography archive in the NMRS, need to have their potential fully exploited. Multi-disciplinary, collaborative research (and the application of GIS modelling to spatial data in order to process the results) is vital if we are to escape from the current ‘silo’ approach and address key research questions from a range of perspectives; and awareness of relevant research outside Scotland is essential if we are to avoid reinventing the wheel. Our perspective needs to encompass multi-scale approaches, so that ScARF Neolithic Panel Report iv developments within Scotland can be understood at a local, regional and wider level. Most importantly, the right questions need to be framed, and the right research strategies need to be developed, in order to extract the maximum amount of information about the Scottish Neolithic.

This Coastal and Hydraulics engineering technical note (CHETN) presents a methodology to compute normal forces on wetland perimeters with vertically scarped edges. The approach uses an empirical algorithm that predicts the normal force given the offshore vessel wake height, period, and water depth at a given point. Wave impact forces are measured using load cells, which have not been applied previously to marsh settings. Load cell and vessel wake measurements from two field sites are combined to generate an empirical transfer function relating forces to incoming vessel wake characteristics.
