Abstract (sommario):
El libro fue publicado originalmente en inglés, en el verano de 2015, por la editorial Chelsea Green Publishing -White River Junction, Vermont-: “The Essential Bernie Sanders and His Vision for America”.

Abstract (sommario):
William Rutherford Sanders spent a childhood and early student days divided between Edinburgh and Montpelier, France before graduating in Medicine in Edinburgh. An early interest in the spleen was encouraged by a two-year period in Europe where he became familiar with the work of Helmholtz, Bernard and Henle. Returning to Edinburgh, his growing experience led to the position of assistant in the Infirmary pathology department. He conducted classes in the University of Edinburgh and on behalf of the Royal Colleges became familiar with the museum of the Royal College of Surgeons where he was chosen as Conservator in 1853. Criticised by 20th century historians for concentrating on verbal teaching rather than on the conservation of the museum, Sanders became a consultant physician to the Royal Infirmary in 1861 and in 1869 Professor of General Pathology. Throughout these years, Sanders gave as much time as possible to the study of the structure and function of the spleen and to neurological disorders such as hemiplegia. His later life was interrupted by a series of illnesses commencing with an abdominal abscess. A prolonged convalescence allowed the resumption of work but deranged vision and hemiplegia preceded his death on 18 February 1881.

Abstract (sommario):
Populism is a fairly young concept. It does not have a single definition, neither does it have a single ideology. Populists can operate in a wide spectrum — from the extreme left to the extreme right. They gain popularity by focusing on issues important to large groups of the population that are avoided by the political elite. In Europe it is immigration issue, in the USA it is the loss of jobs in industry; in Ukraine it is low income, unequal opportunities, unfair distribution of wealth, and corruption. Recently, there has been growing support for populist parties and politicians. Populists, in particular, support traditional social values, nationalism, and oppose immigration. Populists can influence politics, for example, the populist United Kingdom Independence Party initiated a referendum in June 2016 on the UK's membership in the European Union, which resulted in the victory of the supporters of Brexit - the exit of the UK. As Professor Inglehart notes, populism is spreading as a response to the transformation of values, populism expresses a "rollback" from post-materialist values. Populist politicians are unsuccessfully trying to find a solution to the new challenges that have arisen as a result of globalization and the formation of an artificial intelligence society. Thus, Donald Trump's proposals are predominantly xenophobic and authoritarian in nature. Another American politician, Bernard Sanders, notes the solution to the acute problem of economic inequality, but the reforms he proposes are ineffective. In this article, the author try to understand what this phenomenon is, what forms and drivers it has, and most importantly, how populism is measured in Europe and what examples of measurement there are in Ukraine. The results of a study in Ukraine presented in the article make it possible to identify trends of populism growth and find ways to oppose it.

Abstract (sommario):
Biological reactors are employed in industrial applications to break down organic waste from a range of sources into components that may be used in other applications. Such reactors may involve complex processes and many components linked by complicated interrelations. These reactions are represented mathematically as nonlinear initial value problems that must be solved numerically. Even smaller systems, more amenable to analytical analysis, require numerical solution methods due to their nonlinearity. We study a simple reactor with only two interacting components—a bacteria consuming a substrate (waste), represented by a \(2\times 2\) autonomous nonlinear initial value problem not solvable analytically. We describe a process to convert this problem to an approximating linear one that can be solved exactly to provide a closed form approximate representation of the evolving system. We assess the results of this approach and show they often agree favourably with numerical computations of the original nonlinear problem, although not always. References J. E. Bailey and D. F. Abstract (sommario):
John Kendrew was born in Oxford, where he spent his childhood years. His father, Wilfred Kendrew, was Dean of the St Catherine's Society and was a geographer and reader in climatology at Oxford University. His mother, Evelyn Sandberg, came from a Hereford parsonage. John's parents separated when he was four years old, his mother moving to Italy and finally to Florence, where she became an art historian working with Bernard Berenson in the Uffizi. She was an authority on Italian primitives and published under the nom de guerre Evelyn Sandberg Vavalà. John remained with his father in Oxford and attended the Dragon School. He re–established contact with his mother a few times during his early years and her influence on him remained strong throughout his life. Although he had the attention and affection of his paternal grandmother and two doting maiden aunts, his childhood was rather lonely. One of his aunts noticed that the child was much in need of spectacles. John's pebble glasses were to shield him from enquiring eyes until late in life when a cataract operation rendered them less necessary. His aunts introduced him to photography, which remained a lifelong interest.

Valido, Tiago Manuel Ferreira Marques. "Nocturna: uma perceção suburbana". Master's thesis, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/10451/44830.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This project work reports, through a set of photographic images, a suburban reality, which was titled Nocturna: a suburban perception. Briefly, it begins with a description of the history of photography, based on Walter Benjamin's theoretical foundations on the various phases of the aura, with particular focus on photography. From his analysis of Eugène Atget's work, it appears that the concept of aura is associated with something more than the character of a unique and irreproachable object, situating the Benjamin´s reflections in the historical and sociological context in which they were written, proposing their critical evaluation. With the central question about the status of photography, André Rouillé's considerations on the boundaries where a photograph as a document transcends and invades the artistic field are explored. It describes the technical evolution of photography, which led to the pictorialist movement and its possible appreciation as art. Because photography has an intrinsic documentary character, it was used by the various sciences that emerged with the industrialization of the nineteenth century, including ethnography, to which particular attention is devoted, where its method of research can be compared with the way of acting of the flanêur. In ethnographic research, there is usually the need to “cut out” a given reality due to the multiplicity of subjects that can be studied, which refers to the work of August Sander, a photographer who inserts within the scope of artistic photography the notion of typology and his methodology was later adopted by Bernd and Hilla Becher in their photographic series (typologies). The context in which photography develops its singularities, along with economic growth and the expansion of cities, is also emphasized, translated into a new social structure, with an irreversible impact on the behavior of modern man, creating the foundations of consumer society, which would extend to the present day. In this sense, cities become a grand stage of theater, where each individual is simultaneously an actor and spectator before the other. Thus, the project Nocturna: a suburban perception is based on these issues, leaving the observer free to interpret their images as well as the consistency of their integration within their descriptive and conceptual part.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter delves into the important issues of substantial unity and the foundations of knowledge. It argues that the views of Bernard Lonergan and Charles Sanders Peirce concerning world process are strikingly similar. Both outline an evolutionary cosmology that pays attention to both the law-like and the chance elements required to think of the universe as developing. Both reject the notion that the universe is mechanistically determined even if it is ordered. Both look upon “chance” as an objective component of the universe, not merely as a cloak for ignorance. The remarkable convergence of ideas of two thinkers separated by almost a century not only illuminates their place in intellectual history but, more importantly, adds an extrinsic confirmation of a cosmological view that takes motion and change seriously.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract During Queen Victoria’s reign a powerful anti-vivisection movement sprang up in Britain, strongly represented in both Houses of Parliament. Physiologists, such as Claude Bernard and Charles Richet [ 1501 in France, and Michael Foster and Burdon Sanderson in Britain, attracted the hatred of animal-lovers. It was undoubtedly true that many callous, and often unnecessary experiments were conducted on living animals, especially in France, where no legal restraints existed. Claude Bernard [138], the greatest physiologist of all, was a target of violent abuse (even from his own family), and his teacher, Francois Magendie, even more so. Anti-vivisectionists from England infiltrated Magendie’s lecture demonstrations and reported on the cruel and repellent scenes that they had witnessed. A Member of Parliament, Henry Labouchere, recalled the cacophony of screams from the experimental animals that assailed his ears in the corridors of the Medical School in Paris, and the reaction of the doorman when he remarked on it: ‘Que voulez-vous? C’est la science.’ Magendie would often be heard to address the struggling dog, strapped down on the table before him: ‘Tais-toi, pauvre betel’

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract This chapter investigates whether it is acceptable or not for people to sell data generated by automated empathy. It reviews literature and practices of ‘data trusts’ and ‘personal data store apps’ highlighting that while ‘infomediaries’ are not new, they now receive policy support. That Sir Tim Berners Lee and the UK’s British Broadcasting Corporation have taken an interest in decentralised data ownership is also found to lend heft. The chapter then assesses the moral and political philosophy of selling data about intimate states. In addition to collectivist and free market philosophies it considers Michael Sandel’s ‘Moral Limits of Markets’ thesis on whether certain aspects of human life should be beyond monetisation. In reference to survey data from the Emotional AI Lab (that McStay directs) the chapter concludes that there is scope to sell data to organisations that citizens believe to serve the public good in relation to health.
