The east coast of Taiwan is next to the Pacific Ocean. Every year the Kuroshio Current, which is the world’s second largest ocean current, flows through the sea east of Taiwan. Plenty of migratory fish follow the Kuroshio Current and migrate northward, which brings people abundant valuable marine resources in east Taiwan. One of the most important species that come from the marine resources of Kuroshio Current is sailfish. Therefore, sailfish is a kind of specialty in east Taiwan fisheries. An artist’s idea originates from daily life. The author of this thesis has lived in Taitung for nine consecutive years. As the knowledge of east Taiwan increases, the energy and passion of art creation rise just like a gushing fountain. Accordingly, it is an excellent opportunity to record the special topic of east marine sailfish, by means of artistic creation. From the review of art history, the pursuits of visual art changes from time to time. At the very beginning, people stressed the basic elements of shape, space and color, and then steadily added new elements such as perspective, hues, composition and text, etc. After the development of Impressionism, people started to seek the essence of art. In modern times, the spirit of Simple Aesthetics just matches the desire, hence Simple Aesthetics began to spread. Recently, people have tried to combine eastern imagination together with Simple Aesthetics because the significance of Asian Art increases gradually. This not only becomes a type of design principle, but also can be applied to practical daily life. Consequently, how to combine the materials of existing cultures with the trends of the future will be a potential topic to study. In this thesis, the creation of art work originates from the concept of “Sailfish Imagination” and is expressed by using the technique of acrylic paint. Through painting we hope to render the imagination of sailfish and marine cultures, moreover, to discuss the relationship between human and nature.

Histamine poisoning is usually associated with fishes such as tuna or sailfish. Because those fishes contain high levels of free histidine which can be converted by a decarboxylase produced by bacteria. Therefore, inhibiting the growth or enzymatic activities of histamine producing bacteria (HPB) is a critical procedure to prevent histamine poisoning. Japanese horseradish (wasabi) is a popular spice in Taiwan and its major volatile compound, allyl isothiocyanate (AIT), has been reported to possess a high antibacterial activity. Currently, vacuum-packing is the most common method to extend the shelf life of fishery products. However, a single preservation method such as applying AIT or vacuum packing is insufficient. The antibacterial and preservative efficacy of the combination of vacuum packaging and gaseous AIT in sailfish was evaluated. In the study, sailfish samples were inoculated with histamine producing bacteria, Raoultella ornithinolytica, then treated with different concentrations of gaseous AIT (329.08, 459.46 or 516.70 mg / L air) at 4°C for 24 hr. The sailfish samples were vacuum or non-vacuum packed, then stored at 15°C, 25°C or 4-25-4°C. The samples without vacuum package no AIT treatment were served as the control group. Levels of total aerobic counts, histamine-producing bacteria, total volatile basic nitrogen (TVBN) and biogenic amines were analyzed daily. Significantly lower counts of total aerobic and histamine producing bacteria was found in the AIT treated samples than the samples without AIT treatment (p<0.05) within the group without vacuum packaging. However, bacterial counts were not significantly reduced within the group with vacuum packaging. In addition, similar results were obtained for TVBN. TVBN values reduced correlated with the increasing AIT concentrations in the unvacuum packed group but not in the vacuum packed group. In the unvacuum packed group, histamine amount reduced significantly with AIT treatment (p<0.05) and the reduction is correlated with AIT concentrations. In the vacuum packed group, AIT treatment also showed an inhibitory effect against histamine production. Comparing the control, the vacuum packaged samples showed significantly lower histamine production than unvacuum packaged samples (p<0.05).

Sailfish (Istiophorus platypterus), caught in the commercial tuna longline and recreational fisheries, is an important apex predator in marine ecosystems. However, the spatial and temporal distributions of Atlantic sailfish may be impacted by marine environmental factors, leading to possible shifts in the distribution of the fishing ground. Generalized additive models (GAMs) were applied in this study to analyze the influence of chlorophyll-a concentration (CHL), sea surface height (SSH), mixing layer depth (MLD), sea surface temperature (SST), and sea surface salinity (SSS) on the catch rates and habitat distribution of Atlantic sailfish with data collected from the Taiwanese tuna longline fleet. All environment factors considered in the models were statistically significant and sea surface temperature was the primary factor that affects the distribution of sailfish. The hotspot of habitat distribution was between 20°N-20°S in the Atlantic Ocean. The results of this study could be used to predict the habitat distribution of Atlantic sailfish and provide useful scientific information for fisheries management, if needed, to potentially reduce the sailfish bycatch in tuna longline and purse seine fisheries.

Sailfish (Istiophorus platypterus) is a highly migratory fish that inhabits tropical and subtropical Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans. In the Indian Ocean, sailfish is mainly caught by gillnet and longline fleets of the countries around the Arabian Sea. Catches increased sharply since the 1990s and the average catch exceeded 29,000 tones in recent years. Due to lack of biological information and effort for sailfish in the Indian Ocean, this study adopts Catch-MSY method and Depletion-Based Stock Reduction Analysis, which need only history catch and prior distribution of life history parameters and stock parameters, to conduct the assessment for sailfish in the Indian Ocean. The results of both methods indicate that catches and fishing mortality substantially increased and biomass decreased gradually since the 1990s. Currently, the stock status is not overfished. However, fishing mortality obtained from Catch-MSY method is at a high level, while, fishing mortality obtained from DB-SRA is still below FMSY. Comparing to Catch-MSY method, the estimates of DB-SRA are more robust and DB-SRA can incorporate more biological and stock parameters. However, the results of this study indicate that the model estimations of DB-SRA are influenced by the assumption of depletion. To further understand the population dynamics of sailfish in the Indian Ocean, improvements in data collection and quality of fishery statistics and are necessary. In addition, biological studies of sailfish in the Indian Ocean should be enhanced simultaneously.

Fishery stock assessment and management used to focus on single species method. FAO promoted the ecosystem-based fishery management (EBFM) for the sustainability of living aquatic resources. EBFM need to be taken into account with trophic structure and flows of biomass through species interactions. In present study, nitrogen and carbon stable isotopes analyses were applied to investigate the trophic structure of sailfish. A total of 263 sailfish muscle samples were examined. The δ15N values for sailfish ranged from 7.51 to 14.19 &;#8240; (mean=12.06&;#8240; ± 1.16) and the δ13C values ranged from -22.04 to -15.48 &;#8240; (mean=-17.62&;#8240; ± 1.10). The δ15N values were positively related to body length, while δ13C were negatively related to body length. The results revealed the different size class of sailfish occupied different trophic position of pelagic ecosystem. We postulate that the factors which influence on trophic position of sailfish between young and adult were food sources, habitats and migratory pattern. Stable isotope ratios of a consumer are related to those of its prey. Stable isotope mixing model was used to estimate diet composition of consumer by mass balance equation. In this study, stable isotope mixing model was applied by carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes of sailfish to estimate the food sources of their prey. The sailfish were segregated by juveniles (<140cm, LJFL), maturing stage (141-180cm, LJFL) and adults (>181cm, LJFL) from previous research. The most important preys for juvenile sailfish were Bramidae (15.90%), Mene maculata (11.04%) and Clupeidae (9.62%). Therefore, adult sailfish feed on Trichiurus lepturus (32.63%), followed by Katsuwonus pelamis (15.82%) and Priacanthus macracanthus (11.30%). In spite of the apparent high prey diversity of diet composition for sailfish, they feed mainly on epipelagic species in the waters off eastern Taiwan. Food web is an important element in pelagic ecosystem to transport nutrients and energy flow between consumers and prey. In order to investigate the role of sailfish and to explore the function and structure of pelagic ecosystem in eastern Taiwan waters, we applied Ecopath with Ecosim model inferred from stable isotope analysis, stomach content analysis and fisheries statistical data to perform pelagic trophic model of eastern Taiwan. The results reveal that the trophic level of the functional groups varied from 1.0 to 4.52. Marine mammals and shark are occupied top trophic level. Total ecosystem throughput is 3054.43 t/km2/yr. Sum of all production, sum of all consumption and sum of all respiratory flows are 1787.29, 824.89 and 528.62 t/km2/yr, respectively. Total primary production to total respiration ratio is 3.13. Connectance Index (CI) and System Omnivory Index (SOI) are 0.47 and 0.25, respectively. In this study, we preliminary established pelagic trophic model in eastern Taiwan and the results can provide scientific references for ecosystem-based fisheries management. Ecosim model was applied to predict biomass trajectories of each functional groups in next 50 years. The predicted biomass trends indicate that if we maintain current fishing efforts in eastern Taiwan will reduce most of biomass of top predators in the future (e.g. Marine mammals, tuna, billfish and shark). The results show current fishing efforts in eastern Taiwan is still high, we suggest the fish stock need to be monitored and fishing efforts should be further reduced.

Age-growth and reproductive biology of sailfish were studied and the results were applied to yield per recruit (Y/R) and spawning stock biomass per recruit (SSB/R) analysis to assess the current stock of sailfish in the waters off eastern Taiwan. Length and weight data were collected monthly from a total of 6,279 sailfish (1,927 females and 4,352 males) landed in Shinkang Fish Market during July 1998 to December 2002. The fish sizes ranged from 78 to 239 cm LJFL (lower jaw fork length) or 1 to 60 kg RW (round weight). The proportion of females increased with fish size and reached 100% at fish size larger than 227 cm or 46 kg. Age and growth were examined by counting growth rings on cross sections of the fourth spine of the first dorsal fin of 1,135 (436 female and 699 male) sailfish. Significant differences were found in length-at-age and estimated growth parameters between sexes. Females grew faster and reached larger sizes than males. The generalized von Bertalanffy growth parameters estimated for females were the following: asymptotic length (L∞) = 343.8 cm, growth coefficient (K) = 0.011 yr-1, age at zero length (t0) = –0.468yr, and the fitted fourth parameter (m) = –1.639. The growth parameters estimated for males were the following: asymptotic length (L∞) = 294.0 cm, growth coefficient (K) = 0.023 yr-1, age at zero length (t0) = –0.704 yr, and the fitted fourth parameter (m) = –1.288. Monthly variations in gonadosomatic index of 528 sailfish and histological examination on the 391 gonad tissue provided the basis to define the different stages of maturity. This information indicated that the sailfish spawned from April to September. Length at 50% maturity was 166.376 cm and 151.556 cm, respectively for females and males. Sailfish are a multiple spawning species, the spawning frequency was 1.89 days, batch fecundity equaled 0.2–2.48 million eggs. The relationship between batch fecundity in millions (BF) and weight (kg) or length (cm) was: BF = 2.03×10-3 RW1.936 (r 2 = 0.714; n = 18) and BF = 5.46×10-15 LJFL6.283 (r 2 = 0.667). Via age-length transformation and catch curve analysis, total mortality rate (Z) was estimated as 0.56 and 0.58 yr-1, and the natural mortality rate (M) was 0.26 and 0.27 yr-1 respectively for females and males as obtained using Pauly’s empirical equation. The effects of different levels of M (0.20, 0.26, 0.30, 0.35 yr-1 for females and 0.20, 0.27, 0.30, 0.35 yr-1 for males), fishing mortality (F, 0–1.0 yr-1) and age at first capture (tc, 1–10 yr) on Y/R and SSB/R of sailfish were evaluated. The results showed that at the current tc of 5 yr and the current M of 0.26 yr-1 for females and 0.27 yr-1 for males, the current F values were below F0.1 for both sexes. SSB/R was 14.90 kg and spawning potential ratio (SPR) was 38.6 %. The sailfish in the waters off eastern Taiwan appear to be moderately exploited. However, in view of the recent rapid increase in fishing effort, it is evident that the stock condition and developments in the fishery still need to be monitored.

This study was to investigate the effects of four different drying methods on the qualities of dried products of sailfish、Istiophorus platypterus、caught on the eastern coast of Taiwan. The methods used included smoking, sun drying、hot-air、and cold-air drying. Sensory related properties、including water activity (Aw)、sensory evaluation and color values (L、a and b) were monitored during the 3-month storage. AW of all the products dried by the four different methods was significantly different during the storage period. Results of the analysis of L value showed no significant difference among the four drying methods. However、a and b values increased with the increase of time. In the product prepared by sun drying、oxidative stabilities、including peroxide value (POV)、acid value (AV) and thiobarbituric acid value (TBA) were determined during the 3-months storage. The results showed that POV、 AV and TBA values in the sun dried product incresed with the increase of the storage time up to 3 months. However、there was no signifirant change in the three values in the smoked products throughout the storage.

Sailfish (Istiophorus platypterus) is an important commercial species in waters off eastern Taiwan. It is known to be sexually dimorphic and is exploited by various fishing gears. In this study, therefore, the gear-specific Separable Virtual Population Analysis was constructed for evaluating the fishing exploitation and population status of this stock. In addition, the Monte Carlo simulation was used to evaluate the impact of observation errors associated with catch-at-weight and sex-ratio data on the model estimations. The results of this study indicated that the biomass gradually decreased since 2005 due to slightly increased fishing mortality. However, the estimates of fishing mortality in 2008 were only about 28-41% and 19-30% of those in 2000 for female and male respectively, biomass in 2008 were about 1.01-1.75 folds and 1.24-2.31 folds of those in 2000 for female and male respectively, and spawning biomass in 2008 was about 2.28-3.33 folds of that in 2000. The sailfish in the waters off eastern Taiwan appear to be moderately exploited. The results of simulation analysis indicated that incorporating observation errors in catch-at-weight would lead to obvious impact on model estimations, especially for females. The impact of error in sex ratio was relatively mirror and increasing the sample size of sex ratio data can improve the precision of the model estimations. Keywords: sailfish, waters off eastern Taiwan, gear-specific Separable Virtual Population Analysis, Monte Carlo simulation.

Sailfish and spearfish are widely distributed in the Atlantic Ocean. Catch records of these two species were combined due to as non-target species in the Taiwanese tuna longline fishery in the Atlantic Ocean. However, there is a need to separate catch data of sailfish and spearfish into two species for assessment of Atlantic sailfish. Logbook data of the Taiwanese tuna longline fishery were collected in this study from 2009 to 2015, including year, month, attitude, longitude, fishing effort and catch of sailfish. We compared various methods to estimate catch ratios of sailfish in this fishery and different approaches to standardize CPUE (Catch per unit of effort) for the species, in order to develop an abundance index of Atlantic sailfish for 1968-2015. Results showed that GAMs (Generalized Additive Models) are the most appropriate methods used to estimate the catch ratio of sailfish in the fishery and that the delta-lognormal approach can deal well with large amount of zero catch data for sailfish. Standardized CPUE showed that sailfish abundance substantially decreased from the late 1960s to the 1970s and remained relatively stable thereafter. Given that the Atlantic sailfish might be overfished and large uncertainty in the assessment results, long-term series of abundance index should be developed to be used as basic input data for stock assessment to understand current stock status and the variation. Results from this study could be used to provide scientific-based suggestions for fishery management.

Sea food is an excellent nutrition source but has a short shelf life. Many packaging techniques and anti-bacteria material have been invented such as vacuum, modified atmosphere packaging (MAP), edible films, and plant ethereal oil which were proved to be effective. Therefore, this research combined these three techniques. Thyme essential oil was added into the membrane made with gelatin and sodium methyl cellulose (final concentration, 10%). Marline fish samples were wrapped with this membrane then packaged into regular air, vacuum, 100% nitrogen, or 100% carbon dioxide (CO2). In addition, the marline sample wrapped with the membrane without essential oil and stored under regular air was used as a control. All samples were stored at 4°C or15°C and analyzed at every two days for microbiological (total mesophilic, psychrophilic, anaerobic counts), physic-chemical characteristics (pH, total volatile basic nitrogen- TVBN, water losing, and water holding capacity). The most effective inhibition to the microbial growth was obtained from CO2 treatment. Comparing with the control, the CO2 packages reduced the 2.4, 2.5, 2.7 log CFU/g at on day 15 at 4°C, respectively, and 2.6, 0.7, 1.1 log CFU/g on day 7 at 5°C, respectively. There was no significant difference for pH values between treatments (p>0.05), though the pH values in CO2 packages were lower due to the dissolving of CO2 into fish meat. TVBN values were retarded by CO2 treatment at 4°C after day 5 (p<0.05) but no significant difference was observed at 15°C. There was no significant difference for water losing and holding capacity between treatments (p>0.05). Based on the results, marline fish wrapped with membrane with thyme essential oil and stored in CO2 packages showed the highest inhibition to microbial growth ability not to other physic-chemical characteristics.

Loricariidae fish are very popular fish species on ornamental fish market in recent years, which commonly known as the scavengers was introduced in Taiwan for aquarium cleaning during 1980s. But inappropriate release and abandonment, it was now established in Taiwan with stable groups. Lacking of comprehensive information, the scientific name were divergent, and the species is still not sure. In this study, the sailfin catfishes were investigated by traditional identification and phylogenetic analyze. We also examine their feeding habits and niche overlap between sympatric species, to explore the species problem and threatening to native species. Character examinations showed that there were no significant differences between the sailfin catfish collected from Jingmei river of Taipei, Toucian river of Hsinchu, Bajhang river of Chiayi, and Kao-Ping river of Pingtung. They could be Pterygoplichthys disjunctivus with all spots on abdomen coalescing to form vermiculations or P. pardalis with spots on abdomen mostly discrete, usually no more than five spots coalescing to form short vermiculations by key identification. However, the results of phylogenetic analyze showed they were classified in the same group on phylogenetic tree, and their genetic distances were less than 1%. So we conjectured that the sailfin catfish in Taiwan could be a single species with several introductions. Results of feeding ecology showed that filament algae, organic detritus and chironomidae represented the most important items on the diet of this species. Their diets are such alike in different months, length, and areas. However, the niche overlap index between Pterygoplichthys sp. and indigenous Acrossocheilus paradoxus, Zacco pachycephalus, Candidia barbatus was 0.80, 0.70, and 0.89. Due to their highly competition on food resources, the invasive sailfin catfish may cause damaging effects to the stream ecosystem and native fish populations.

Numerous studies have shown that high levels of mercury are harmful to both humans and wildlife. The concentration of mercury has been determined in four species of marlins for a survey of the bioaccumulatable contaminant. Samples were prepared using standard digestion procedures and analyzed by flameless atomic absorption. Seventy samples were collected from Southern China Sea. Among the four species analyzed, three species illustrated concentration level of total mercury higher than the recommended food safety criteria by World Health Organization. Concentrations of total and organic mercury were correlation in liver and muscle of marlins. It was observed that concentration level of mercury was related to fish length. Among the muscle tissue, organic mercury ranged from 77.67 to 88.78% of total mercury content in marlins. It was believed that demethylation of organic mercury in liver resulting lower organic mercury - total mercury ratio (i.e., 33.77% to 53.28% ). Comparison of muscle mercury content was made for marlins, tunas, and salmons. Species with higher trophic level will have higer tendency of mercury accumulation. Also concentration level of organic and total mercury were correlated to length of fish. Based upon the mercury concentration in marlins, daily consumption of marlins was estimated for the health concerns.

I investigate the population characteristics, reproductive cycle, and feeding content from December 1999 to November 2000. During the study period, 537 individuals were collected. The standard length of collected individuals ranged from 12.5 to 43.7 cm, with an average of 28.64 cm. Most of them with a standard length distributed between 30 and 35 cm. Female present a longer body length than male. Body weight and standard length were positively correlated. However, the variations of external color pattern and morphological differences between opposite sexes were unable to clearly distinguished by the 13 body measurements. The reproduction season of P. multriradiatus in Taiwan extended from April to September, at least for six months. However, few individuals were still able to reproduce in October to March. The minimum standard length for a mature female is appropriately on 25 cm. For that standard length greater than 31 cm, at least half of individuals were equipped with mature egg. The female to male ratio in collected individual were almost 2.5 to 1, the value was even higher during the reproduction season. A positive correlation was found between the intestine weight and body weight, thus the intestine is recognized as the major digestion organ. No significant difference was identified for the water content and organic content of intestine between the individuals of large and small body sizes. Therefore, the food composition of this species did not vary significantly from young to adult, mainly composed by bottom soil and benthic algae. According to the characteristics of population structure, reproduction cycle, and feeding habit of P. multriradiatus from the mid- and downstream region of Kao-Ping River, the population of this species will expand and invade into the upstream section. In addition, a negative impact is predicted on those endemic fish species of periphyton feeders and bottom spawners.

Sailfin molly, an exotic fish in Taiwan, is an euryhaline teleost which can survive in either freshwater or seawater environments. Because the mollies are aquarium fish, they have a few variations in appearance. In order to achieve accuracy of the experiment, we performed measuring morphometric characters and contrasting the sequences of mitochondrial NADH dehydrogenase subunit 2 (NADH2) to identify species. The results indicated that the sailfin molly is the most similar with Poecilia latipinna. Sailfin molly is ovoviviparous fish, and it can reproduce in fresh water and seawater in laboratory. To test the salinity tolerance, the adult sailfin molly can be transferred directly from freshwater (FW) to brackish water (BW, 15 ‰) or from seawater (SW, 35 ‰) to FW without mortality. Also, the FW group was transferred to SW without mortality when transferred to BW for 24 hrs prior to SW. On the other hand, the larvae born in BW or SW can be transferred directly to FW without mortality, but those born in FW were found over 50 % mortality in 24 hrs after transfer to SW. Water contents, body length, and body weight of larvae of transferred groups did not reveal significant difference compared to control groups. Plasma analyses showed that the osmolality, [Cl-], and [glucose] correlated positively with environmental salinity; but [Na+] as well as the muscle water contents (MWC) did not show significant difference among experimental groups. The Na+, K+-ATPase (NKA) activity of gills of FW and BW groups are significantly lower than the SW group, and the number of Na+, K+-ATPase immunoreactive (NKIR) cells of BW group is less than the SW group. The results revealed that: (1) the sailfin molly from Lin-Yuan, Kaohsiung is Poecilia latipinna; (2) in larvae or adult, the SW group have wider salinity tolerance than the FW group; (3) the analyses of MWC and plasma showed the effective osmoregulatory mechanism for osmoregulatory balance in different salinities; (4) the lowest NKA activity in the FW and BW groups indicates sailfin molly inhabiting in FW and BW (15 ‰) needs less ionic regulation by NKA.
