Background The aim of this study was to explore whether sail training using a VSail® simulator would allow people with spinal cord injuries (SCI) to learn to sail in a safe controlled environment and then sail competently on the water in wind of moderate strength (12 knots). A battery of physical tests and questionnaires was used to evaluate possible improvements in health and well-being as a consequence of participation in the trial. Methods Twenty participants were recruited with the assistance of their physicians from The International Center for Spinal Cord Injury, Kennedy Krieger Institute. Inclusion criteria were SCI >6 months previously, medically stable, with no recent (1 month or less) inpatient admission for acute medical or surgical issues. All neurological SCI levels (C1-S1) were eligible. All subjects followed a programme of instruction leading to mastery of basic sailing techniques (steering predetermined courses, sail trimming, tacking, gybing and mark rounding). Results Not all participants completed the study for various reasons. Those that did were seven males and six females, six with tetraplegia and seven with paraplegia. The mean age was 45 years (23 to 63) and the average time since injury was 14.7 years (2 to 38 years). At the end of the course subjects were able to perform the sailing maneuvers and navigate a triangular racecourse on the simulator’s display in 12 knots of wind within a pre-set time. At 6 weeks post completion of training most subjects showed a decrease in depression, physical and social limitations, and an improvement in physical tests. These improvements were maintained or increased in most participants by 12 weeks, but not others. Conclusions The primary objective of the trial was achieved as all participants who completed the VSail® training were able to sail on the water at the Downtown Sailing Center in Baltimore.

The shipping industry is important for the development of the world economy. Only merchant ships around the world sail more than 50,000 units to maintain the flow of international trade, and they employ more than 1.5 million sailors representing almost all nationalities of the globe. However, in terms of the impact of modern digital technologies, Morgan Stanley defines maritime transport as a «lagging sector».To ensure the sustainability of the shipping industry, the professional community has developed international frameworks and conventions that dictate various aspects of shipping such as design, operation, staffing and training. Among other things, it is important that the vessels are managed by highly qualified sailors. The requirements of the industry for professional training are focused on the training of seafarers who can not only manage ships effectively, but also ensure the care of the environment and the safety of passengers and crew members.According to the analysts of the International Maritime Organization, the prosperity of shipping requires a highX quality, motivated and properly qualified workforce, and, therefore, it is necessary to revise and bring the education and training of seafarers in line with the changing requirements and challenges of digitalization.

Abstract (sommario):
On-Board Training System (OBTS), which binds the simulator training with real equipment training and use of simulation technology, embedded simulation training into platform of real weapons, using real weapons system for high-fidelity training. OBTS can be used for training purposes to individual, department and whole ship while it is in port, under sail or in active service without disturbing its mission. This paper first introduces the principle of OBTS, and summarizes the status of the development of domestic and international on-board training system. Based on the training scale of system, OBTS is divided into three levels. Related technologies to achieve OBTS are analyzed. Navy's training system is shifted from the shore-based to on-board and from a single system to the level of cooperative training. Thus, the development of OBTS, and by the top-level design, introducing the design of OBTS in warship design phase has a very real sense to Navy.

International Standard Ambulance given for Pidie Jaya and the support from Medco E&amp;P Malaka in the event Sail Sabang 2018 conducted by the company and press-released by Serambi Indonesia online in 2018. A qualitative approach with a case study method was employed in this study. The results showed that the point of view of journalists/media is dissimilar from the point of view of a company in writing a text. When media tend to publish articles based on a press release distributed by a company, then the company’s image and reputation will be affected and become positive.</em>

Management is the process of accomplishing the activities efficiently and effectively with the help of human capital. The manpower in any sector is made to sail through a saga of productivity and profitability under the efficient captainship of the managers. This research paper gives insight into the implications of transactional analysis and ego states of the managers rendering the services in the companies of the IT sector in the Coastal Karnataka. To accomplish the objectives of the study, Transactional Style Inventory-Manager (TSI-M) is administered to the respondents, and scoring is done considering the Operating Effectiveness Quotient (OEQ). The research paper highlights that the demographic variables have a major influence on the interpersonal skills of the managers. It is found out that various ego states are predominant among managers, and the lowest state is the creative child ego state. The research concludes that by conducting transactional analysis-based leadership training, the productivity of employees can be enhanced in the future.

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) since September 8, 2017, has implemented the Ballast Water Management (BWM) Convention as an effort to protect the maritime environment from ballast water pollution. The ballast water is water used by ships to maintain stability when the ship is unloaded to sail safely. This study aims to determine to what extent the understanding of PIP Semarang cadets in the 7th and 8th semesters of Post Sea Project to the BWM Convention. The research method used is an analytic description with a cross-sectional approach using questionnaires and in-depth interviews. The sample consisted of 49 cadets majoring in the Deck and Engine departments. The study results indicated that most of the respondents do not understand the BWM Convention correctly. On the question of when BWM was enacted, the correct answer was 2.04%. On the question of when Indonesia ratified the BWM, the correct answer was 0%. On the question of how the implementation of BWM for the D-1 standard (ballast exchange) was 2.04% and the D-2 standard (ballast treatment) is 4.08%. However, on the question about the importance of handling ballast water 34.69% answered correctly, which means that they know the dangers of ballast water and it is very important to handle it so as not to impact health and environment. The suggestion is to disseminate the information to cadets through seminars, including marine pollution courses or special training on ballast water.

Victor Vakhtang Lomidze was the first Georgian officer to serve in the Polish Navy. A student of the military academy in Tiflis, he defended Georgia against the Bolsheviks in 1921. After the conquest of Georgia he reached Poland via Turkey and Greece, where he volunteered to join the army. He was a first promotion graduate of the Officers’ School of the Navy and as a foreigner, he became a contract officer of the Polish Navy. He served on board of numerous Polish ships and in staffs. On 1 September 1939, taking command of the mine-layer “Gryf”, he saved the ship and its crew. Wounded on 3 September 1939. Not fully recovered, he undertakes, together with Commander Hryniewiecki’s group, one of the most unusual and at the same time mysterious actions of our Navy. He was interned in Latvia, where he made an escape attempt, together with 60 other officers. After it failed, he continued trying to join his fighting colleagues. Through Sweden he finally got to England, where he served in the Polish Navy, training young sailors working in the Navy Leadership and in staffs. Due to his health, he was unable to sail on combat ships. Twice promoted during the war, he fought for a country that was not his homeland and shed blood for it.

Introduction. Mentoring is one of the major instruments of international students’ adaptation to getting education in Russian universities. Finding out the attitude of international students to various forms of mentoring will help their professional growth. The object of the research is to find out the opinion of Turkman students about mentors and mentees and to define the main ways to ensure individualized psychological pedagogical support of international students in Russian universities. Materials and Methods. The total number of Turkman respondents of Ryazan State University named after S. A. Yesenin who took part in the survey was 55. Empirical methods included online opinion poll of international students with the help of cloud technologies (Google Forms), participant observation method, interview. Results of the Study. The data obtained show positive attitude of Turkman students towards mentoring. To wit, 41 survey participants (75 %) gave an answer that a mentor is a university lecturer or teacher sharing their knowledge and experience with their students and supervising the whole process of learning. 8 people (15 %) consider their groupmates to be mentors, which shows potential readiness of some Turkman students for budding. Over 50 % of those who took part in the poll believe that mentors must communicate with their relatives or official representatives as it ensures their feeling of security. 45 international students (82 %) said that there should be one mentor who will supervise them during the whole period of university education, with only 10 people (18 %) considering that mentors should be different at each stage of their professional growth and development. Mentoring serves the purpose of individualized professional training of international students. Conclusion. The results of the research can profit educators to work out the strategy of further development of various forms of mentoring (group, individual, virtual) while giving professional training to international students. Besides, they will help international graduates find gainful employment. Another application of the results obtained is doing graduation research work in the form of Startup.

According to Alderfer's ERG Theory (Existence-Relatedness-Growth Theory), which is known as “ERG” theory in the literature, people have three basic needs. These needs are "Existence", "Relationship" and "Development". The International Istanbul Kodaly Training Days, the second of which is held in 2019, can be described as a vocational training in a sense. In this study; According to Alderfer's ERG Theory, the extent to which the needs of music teachers to improve themselves in their profession was met by attending Kodaly training days was investigated. With the ERG Theory of Alderfer, professional professional needs of teachers and Kodaly training days are in a positive and direct relationship. The research was carried out with a relational research model, which is one of the descriptive research models, and it was aimed to determine the level of professional satisfaction of the music educators who participated in the Kodaly Training Days and to examine them in terms of some variables. As a result of the study, it was seen that there was a significant difference between the pre-test and post-test scores of the participants' professional satisfaction scale. As a result, it can be said that International Kodaly Training Days increase the professional satisfaction of the participants.

Many recent developments in mixed reality applications are exploited for research on improving training in the construction industry. While immersive technologies offer indisputable advantages over classic paper- or multi-media-based training material, access to this kind of technology is still very limited in the academic world and even less widespread in industry. In this paper, the authors follow the current trend of creating low-threshold micro-learning nuggets, which are easily consumable on mobile devices but can be accessed in every web browser. This is essential to reach the construction trade workforces, which for the most part will own a smart or mobile device, but neither specialized equipment, nor will there be time or patience for a lengthy setup phase before learning content consumption. The learning content aims to give construction workers a clear vision of what some of the fundamental components of a sustainable construction site should look like and what role they play in achieving the said vision. The learning content revolves around the initial idea of DGNB certification (German: German Sustainable Building Council), waste management, certification of construction wood, handling of harmful substances and chemicals and some general health and safety regulations that impact the emission of dust, noise and vibration. The paper describes the general approach of the planning, orchestration of learning material, development of the learning nugget, and deployment, as well as a study for acceptance and user experience

The objective of this study was to fill a research gap, where the channels through which technology and knowledge were transferred remained unexplored in the existing Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) knowledge transfer literature. A case study method was adopted as it is appropriate for exploring the complex process of knowledge transfer. The findings obtained from the case studies were able to demonstrate a positive relationship between MNCs and local innovation where knowledge and technology can be diffused through training programmes offered by MNCs to local suppliers. It provides an understanding as to the extent to which MNCs, through linkages with local firms, may facilitate the innovation activities of said local firms. Policy implications are subsequently discussed and future research suggestions are then put forth.

So, the subject is neglected by many students and as a consequence Mathematics Phobia is often developed in the students’ mind. The said problem is not a new one but in present teachers’ training course special attention is given on it. Briefly said, "Performance management" is all the rage these days, and the old adage "perform or perish" no longer applies. Here, it's crucial that researchers have a firm grasp of the idea of "employee perception" in relation to "performance management systems in the IT industry," as well as the relevant literature, and any gaps that may be filled in by future studies. The information technology sector is the subject of this article since it is the second most populous industry in India. Buyer trust has been bolstered thanks to the Indian IT industry's well-deserved reputation for excellence in software development, service quality, and data security in international markets. HR has shifted its emphasis to develop operational strategies that aid in carrying out the company's overarching goals. The study examines the significance of performance management in the information technology sector. It cannot be said that the creative biography of the artist-architect Stefan Narębski (1892–1966) remains a completely unknown page in the history of art, but everything that has been written and published so far about the life and work of Stefan Narębski is only the top of the iceberg which is his complete biography. The author restores many forgotten and unknown facts of this biography, mainly based on the materials of the Archive of the Nicolaus Copernicus University, first of all, the artist’s own notes (“Diaries”), which had never been published before. Discoveries of this kind relate primarily to the childhood and adolescence of Narębski, held in the Caucasus and Vilnius; his participation in the 1905 revolution; his educational and creative activities in Włocławek in the 1920s; his connections with Stephen Batory University; as well as the repressions that he faced both during the years of the Nazi occupation of Lithuania and during the restoration of Soviet power here, in 1944–45. In the artistic heritage of Narębski, a close-up is highlighted by the types of residential buildings developed by him, educational institutions (museum, school, university department), modern churches, projects for the artistic transformation and decoration of public interiors (the residence of the archbishop; town halls in Vilnius and Torun). The theoretical development of the artistic training program for masters of architectural design (design and decoration of interiors), carried out by Narębski, and the practical implementation of this program at the Nicolaus Copernicus University contained an innovative beginning and provided the most important breakthrough of Polish post-war artistic pedagogy towards a modern, progressive methodology. Of great importance is the international aspect of the work of Narębski, whose personal biography is connected not only with Poland and the strongest impulses of Polish patriotism, but also with Lithuania, Russia, Belarus, Ukraine (with the places where he studied, lived, worked, built and planned the construction of new objects). His contribution to the development of art and artistic pedagogy is subject to measurement on the scale of not only national but also Eastern European culture.

Within the framework of contractual archaeology in the UK (in which both authors largely operate) individual graves and funerary sites are regularly encountered, while they are also the object of targeted research projects. The ability to investigate a burial and to exhume human remains is a practical skill that can be taught and which may be mastered by practice. The investigation of a cemetery of any age is essentially a repetition of this basic technique, in which each grave (or indeed any feature-type containing human remains) is revealed, excavated, and the human remains recorded and lifted. Such exercises vary in scale, but the largest can address very significant numbers of bodies: one obvious example is the cemetery at Spitalfields, London, in which several thousand skeletons were exhumed. Post-excavation methods are also fairly standardized, both in terms of general archaeological reporting and the specific osteological analysis of human remains. These approaches can reasonably be said to be universal within European and North American archaeology, though inevitably with some variation in detail. As a consequence, field archaeologists are, in a technical sense, expert in dealing with the dead. Archaeologists, however, are often less familiar with the more esoteric aspects relating to the dead. Taking the British example again, the field archaeologist generally arrives at a site only after any discussion about the moral or social aspects of exhumation has been concluded. Thus, while provided with technical guidance and being aware of the wider issues involved, they are essentially there to dig. But away from such controlled circumstances, governmental frameworks for dealing with cultural heritage are either less developed or do not exist at all. Here, archaeologists can find themselves enmeshed in matters that go far beyond the technical and, not uncommonly, do so in societies where local attitudes and belief systems are very different to their own. This requires a skill-set for which ‘standard’ archaeological education and training has not necessarily equipped them. This chapter offers a narrative of one such example, which took place on the remote South Atlantic island of St Helena during 2007–8. Here, a team of experienced British field archaeologists, tasked with the excavation of a graveyard of considerable size and international significance, came to deal with the dead— and the living—on a number of fundamental levels that extended far beyond the project brief.

The Sail and Life Training Society is building a new purpose-designed 35m wooden sail-training schooner for unrestricted foreign-going operations. Working with an international team of consultants, SALTS has initiated an ambitious agenda of analytical and experimental investigations to support design, including a parametric study of hull form as it relates to stability at high angles of heel, the development of bespoke parametric design and analysis tools using the graphical algorithm editor Grasshopper, a towing tank campaign at the Wolfson Unit to investigate the behavior of three keel profiles, and a wind tunnel campaign at Politecnico di Milano to investigate the behavior of fifteen sail plans. Preliminary results from these studies will be presented, set in the context of the unfolding story of the evolution of the design of the new vessel.

The maritime and shipping industry tremendously impact on the society and the economy across the centuries. Today shipping is, environmentally and economically, the most efficient way to transport merchandise, serving nearly 90% of world trade. Safety at sea has always been a major issue for all the parties involved in shipping from different perspectives, reasons, and interests. Shipping and maritime training that can assure this safety is a key requirement for every ship to sail and for every seafarer, of any level and rank, to get on-bard and perform any operations. However, the cost of such training can be unbearable for many shipping companies especially in emerging markets that rely much on the readiness and effectiveness of their local seafarers. The introduction of virtual reality (VR) in maritime and shipping training became a solution for all those who seek affordable and reliable professional training, but the markets indicated skepticism on the quality and reliability of such training. Furthermore, there has been significant hesitation on the validity of VR ad Metaverse shipping training and its compliance with the international maritime training certification processes. The covid-19 pandemic and the continuous lockdowns that froze the world, helped VR training to be more accepted by all industries, including the shipping and maritime industry, and to be reconsidered as an accepted training alternative. Within the first year of the pandemic, the VR training industry has exploded in terms of applications, many of which indicate a significant degree of intelligence and state-of-the-art technologies, in hardware, software and communications between the trainee, the system, and the virtual environment. The MarSIOT (Maritime Safety, for Immersive Oceans Technology) case is examined throughout this paper along with other technologies. On the other hand and despite the justified need for virtual training and the readiness of the VR industry to respond to this need a major issue that still has not been resolved, but remains under research investigation and process formulation, is the certification of virtual training scenarios, as qualified and valid professional skills, by credible certification bodies. This paper presents an analysis of the maritime and shipping VR and Metaverse training certification demand, the requirements that need to be fulfilled for VR training scenarios to be certified, and the overall certification process that can be followed. The research is based on primary and secondary research with an extensive academic literature review, a survey with 80 maritime participants, five interviews with industry experts in maritime VR training and certification, case studies on the maturity and the readiness on the VR training in maritime and shipping, and analysis on the maritime virtual training requirements from leading certification organizations in the shipping professional training. The research results indicate an initial VR training certification process that can be used as a guide for VR training organizations on their efforts to certify their professional training applications and technologies. The paper indicates research limitations and areas of further research that can be explored for the standardization of the proposed VR certification methodology and its acceptance by the international maritime and shipping industry.

This paper reports on an evaluation of the online training activities of the International Training Centre of the International Labour Organization (ITCILO) in Turin (Italy). The purpose of this evaluation is to assess the design, implementation and quality of training activities of ITCILO that were delivered in an online distance learning mode since the outbreak of COVID-19 in 2020. The methodology for this evaluation included quantitative and qualitative evaluation methods to provide conclusions and recommendations from the findings, substantiated with statistical data and case studies documenting good practice. 1.284 responses from 151 different countries were collected from a participant's survey, and in-depth interviews were conducted with ITCILO's staff members (27), institutional clients (2), and participants (7). The results of the evaluation are reported in terms of training outreach, learning effectiveness, learner preference of the international online training activities. For example, the number of enrolments on the Centre’s training activities increased dramatically, caused by the rapid adoption of online training activities during the Covid-19 Pandemic. Subsequently, 75 % of the participants said they would prefer digital training activities (blended or fully online) in the future. However, internet connectivity is still a problem in many countries: 50 % of participants from Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and Oceania reported they had regular issues with internet connectivity that disrupted their learning. Based on the findings, ten recommendations for the further development of ITCILO's online training activities are presented.

On the basis of the Safety System Project theory, the navigation system is a ‘ship-human-environment’ [1,2]. Hence, approximately 85% of maritime accidents are accounted for by navigation accidents (i.e., collision and grounding) [3], caused by human errors such as mistakes in impropriate decision-making [4,5]. In maritime navigation, decision-making skills are the key to safe sailing [6]. However, the assessment of decision-making based on objective measurements is rarely studied.This paper aims to assess the impact of safety factors on decision-making in maritime navigation. In this study, two different levels of complexity with a different number of safety factors are designed for the experiment. NASA-TXL rating is used as a subjective assessment tool to rate the perceived workload and performance of the participants [7,8]. In addition, several learning objectives were listed, performance criteria were developed, and objective performance measures such as deviation from the planning route are used to analyze the participants’ decision-making and performance. Statistical tests are applied to determine the significance of the results. The experiment is conducted on a full-mission, motion-platform ship bridge simulator. A total of 22 nautical science students voluntarily participated. The participants are familiarized with the simulated ship model from their previous navigational training. The voyage is in an area near Tromsø in the north of Norway. The sailing route is about 14 kilometers long in narrow water with a sharp turn and passes under a tall, narrow bridge. The results indicate that when the participants were in a more complex scenario with more safety factors associated with navigational tasks, they felt a significantly higher workload and stress level than they were in an easier scenario with safety factors. In the complex scenario, the deviation from the planned route is overall higher than in the easy scenario, however, the trend seems to be that they fast sail back into the planned route. While the grope of sailing in an easy scenario takes more time to get back to the planned route from the point where the deviation is largest. The results also showed that while they were under different stress due to different safety factors, they all performed about the same. The finding of the study proved that when the participants are more stressed, safety is the priority in their decision-making. Human behavior has adaption so that under a certain range of stress, the performance can be stable and does not change with the stress level [9]. The research helps enhance decision-making skills in maritime training programs.

Developing high-quality human resources is one of the important strategic breakthroughs to ensure the construction of Vietnam by 2045 into a developed country with high income following a Socialism orientation. This is one of the very important and urgent decisions. The Social Party determines to train high-quality human resources to meet the increasing need for integration in the context of the fourth industrial revolution taking place very quickly. This is a very important breakthrough; therefore, at the recent 8th Central Conference of the Communist Party of Vietnam, we focused on discussing a very important resolution signed in November 2023. That is Resolution No. 45, related to continuing to build and promote the role of the intellectual class to meet the requirements of rapid and sustainable national development. Today, I am very grateful to come to the conference. I highly appreciate the Organizing Committee for inviting international and Vietnamese scientists, managers, and experts. During the conference, we hope to listen to the experiences, lessons, and initiatives of scientists and international organizations for us to continue researching and synthesizing. On 30 June 2013, nineteen Prescott FD, Granite Mountain Hot Shots, a quasi-military Wildland Fire Crew, died on the Yarnell Hill Fire in Arizona. This tragic Arizona State Forestry (ASF) wildfire was “investigated” by a USDA US Forest Service-funded Serious Accident Investigation Team (SAIT). Their alleged "factual" report (SAIR) concluded they "found no indication of negligence, reckless actions, or violations of policy or protocol." Stated in the positive - they did everything right and yet nineteen men perished. This no blame, no-fault conclusion clearly defies logic and reason. Both USFS and BLM training publications mirror each other: "If firefighters follow the Standard Firefighting Orders and are alerted to the 18 Watch Out Situations, much of the risk of firefighting can be reduced." In 2001 and 2002, former USFS Fire Director Jerry Williams fully supported that joint assertion: “The Ten Standard Firefighting Orders must be firm rules of engagement. … They are the result of hard-learned lessons. Compromis¬ing one or more of them is a common denominator of all tragedy fires. … [where] the Fire Orders were ignored, overlooked, or otherwise compromised.” “Entrapment avoid¬ance must be our primary emphasis and our measure of professional operational success. We must embrace the rules of engagement as a way of doing business - as a professional standard. ... because we owe it to one another. The Fire Orders must become a shared obligation, where the leader’s situational awareness depends on participation by the entire crew and where the crew’s participation is tempered with respect for the leader’s responsibility ..." The SAIT states: "The 10 Standard Firefighting Orders and 18 Watch Out Situations ... [are] the foundation of training in fire suppression operations, ... but they require judgment in application. These principles, ... outline the [SAIT’s] perspective regarding the use and consideration of the 10 and 18 in [the SAIR]." This contradicts the GMHS aftermath.Additionally, other Agency video training sources have made light of this serious subject. “Visualizing The Ten and Eighteen - With Humor” (2004) Kathy Murphy; “WFSTAR: Fire Orders” (2018); and the Wildland Fire LLC - “Honor the Fallen” (2018). In this video, the Standard Fire Orders are denigrated by the USFS Apprenticeship Program Manager: “the truth is that we try to put it into these little boxes in these rules and the 10 and 18 that cannot, they’re not gonna keep us safe, that’s been proven time and time again, we can’t follow our own rule, you know, these rules whatever they are” and states they need to have “luck decision conversation[s],” concluding with “it was good … until it wasn’t.” Did these, and coaching from others, result in the third-year GMHS sole survivor McDonough’s SAIT assertion that Fire Order Ten regarding safely fighting fire, was “hillbilly” and “old”? The documented YH Fire and GMHS tragedy is inaccurate. Indeed, knowing, recognizing, and applying the 10 and 18, and mitigating any Watchout Situations are responsible for saving tens of thousands of WF lives every year! There are no documented cases revealing otherwise.

Abstract Iceberg management on the Grand Banks of Newfoundland, Canada is currently carried out without knowledge of the underwater shape of the iceberg. An iceberg profiling system is being developed to integrate the rapid generation of 3D iceberg shape data with a collection of tools that utilize the data to provide recommendations, intended to improve iceberg management effectiveness. The intent is for the system to be operated by vessel crew with minimal training. The system utilizes a LiDAR and a pole mounted multibeam sonar to profile the iceberg sail and keel, respectively. A vessel equipped with the profiling system circles an iceberg twice to collect a profile, a process that on average requires approximately 15–30 minutes. The data is collected in the form of a point cloud, which must be de-noised and corrected for both drift and rotation of the iceberg. Tools have been developed to assess the stability of the iceberg, and to consider the shape of the iceberg relative to towing net dimensions, to provide guidance to the operator regarding the recommended towing direction to avoid iceberg rolling or net slippage events. Other applications of the profile data include an impact loads analysis tool that determines the distribution of potential iceberg loads in the event of a collision with a given platform, and an operational iceberg drift model that uses the iceberg shape to improve iceberg drift forecasts. Large-scale field programs were carried out in both 2018 and 2019 as part of the development process for the system. Data collected has shown that iceberg characteristics have changed significantly when compared to iceberg profile data collected in the 1980s. For a given iceberg waterline length, the more recent data shows significantly reduced drafts. The 1980s iceberg dataset currently dominates the data used as the basis for assessing iceberg loads on surface facilities and iceberg risk to subsea assets. Reduced iceberg drafts will result in reduced risk to subsea facilities and pipelines. These results and observations demonstrate the usefulness of the iceberg profiling system as an environmental monitoring tool, and the data collected has design and operational applications. The development and capabilities of the system are presented, as well as the comparison of the 1980’s and newer iceberg datasets and implications for iceberg risk to facilities on the Grand Banks and surrounding regions.

Today, with the trend of internationalization, a growing number of universities and institutions worldwide are encouraging their students to take part in abroad programs or vocational training schemes in a foreign country. It is easy to find out that not only are English-speaking countries ideal destinations for education overseas, but many other countries where English is not the first language also attract millions of students worldwide. Studying in these countries, students will have to use English for academic purposes and at the same time learn the local languages to adapt to the host environment. Firsthand exposure to the native speech community coupled with formal classroom learning is said to create the optimal environment for learning an additional language and culture, thus, at the same time, would inevitably cause some effects on students’ identities. Based on the interviews with a focus group of international students studying at a university in Haiphong, the types of negotiated identities, the ways they alternate their behaviors, emotions, and cognitions to adapt to the new environment will be revealed. With these findings, some implications for curriculum and pedagogy which optimize opportunities for international students to develop their knowledge, openness, and adaptability are also suggested.

In the framework of Turkey Entrepreneurship Strategy and Action Plan, there is highlighted to the importance of education of entrepreneurship and there is a need for practical training programs. The Network and Technology Oriented Applied Entrepreneurship Program was carried out as an exemplary model to answer the purpose. The aim of this study is to examine the effect of entrepreneurship knowledge and skills on development. Data were collected with a questionnaire (Evans, 2009; Linan et al., 2008), pre and post-test were applied. There are 162 participants who answered both pre-test and post-test. Although the entrepreneurship information of the participants has been improved, there has not been a significant improvement in entrepreneurial skills. Similar to previous studies, this study also showed a strong relationship between entrepreneurial knowledge and entrepreneurship skill in both pre-test and post-test data. However, in the ∆test formed from the post-test pre-test difference, the relationship between the change of entrepreneurship knowledge and the change in entrepreneurship skills was found to be weak. It was found that the knowledge development provided by the trainings was weak in predicting skill development. It can be said that the entrepreneurship education carried out is not healthy enough and carries a risk of not leaving any permanent impact on the participants. As a result of the findings, revisions that need to be realized in the design of entrepreneurship trainings are discussed.

The goals of this work are to a) understand community perspectives related to public engagement with science and the Luquillo Long Term Ecological Research (LUQ-LTER) program, b) enhance existing relationships within these communities, and c) illuminate opportunities for establishing new relationships between the LUQ-LTER program and its surrounding community. We share results from our case study that includes three methods of data collection: interviews with natural resource managers, a community conversation activity with 12 local community organizations, and a survey given at a public outreach event at El Portal de El Yunque. From interviews with natural resource managers, we learned they are looking for collaborations which directly benefit the resources they manage (forests, water, etc.), and they are also hoping for more formal communication structures between them and the LUQ-LTER. Sixty percent of the organizations at the Community Conversation shared that the most valuable outcome was learning that LUQ-LTER existed .All participants expressed interest in collaborating with the LUQ-LTER and said that LUQ-LTER’s long term ecological data could be beneficial for them to use and LUQ-LTER could be a productive context to share data they gather to heighten utility in all directions. From a survey given at the International Day of Forests Celebration, we learned that most people present at the activity came to the El Yunque National Forest to learn about the forest, spend time with family, or enjoy the forest. We also learned that during previous visits to El Yunque, they most commonly either day hiked or visited a geographical feature (waterfall or observation tower). When asked about which activities they would like to have happen in the future in El Yunque, most people indicated high levels of interest in having educational activities (like festivals or flora and fauna workshops), workshops or training on environmental issues, and night tours. The volunteer opportunities for which the most people indicated highest levels of interest were trail, camp, and related maintenance as well as fish and wildlife opportunities. Overall, everyone we talked to was interested in more collaboration and working together in the future, giving the LUQ-LTER program an excellent starting point for building stronger relationships with the community surrounding their site.
