Abstract (sommario):
From ancient times, some spaces have been understood to be more sacred than others. Even though many of these spaces have no specific religious meaning, there have been new religious movements which can easily be seen in daily life. In order to understand the current dynamics of religion, a focus on the material presence of religion (religious buildings, sites and artefacts in urban spaces) is a fruitful starting point. Thus, the objective of this study is to explore the potential meanings of the sacred in urban spaces, and the effects of these meanings or characterizations of the sacred have on places. Moreover, the focus is on analysing new manifestations of the religious and the sacred in urban space, as well as the ways in which material traces mediate diverse practices, discourses and effects in the various domains of the sacred. By investigating the alignments of these two fields, the city and the sacred, this study sheds new light on the metropolis of London, which manifests both religious diversity and multiple modernities via traces of the sacred in urban spaces. The results show that sacred traces in urban places have a prominent image that many residents and visitors fail to appreciate in their daily lives. The study concludes with a discussion of findings and implications.

Abstract (sommario):
This article explores George Ivanovitch Gurdjieff’s (c.1866-1949) Enneagram Movements. Gurdjieff used the symbol of the enneagram in his teaching to demonstrate the ‘perpetual motion’ of his cosmic Laws of Three and Seven, which govern his cosmological system. The symbol is composed of a circle encompassing a triangle representing the numbers 3, 6, and 9 (the Law of Three), and a six-sided figure representing the numbers 1, 4, 2, 8, 5, 7 (the Law of Seven). This article sets out to investigate the meaning of the enneagram and the significance of the Enneagram Movements, which enact the motion of the symbol. As well as examining primary and secondary sources on Gurdjieff, the author draws from first-hand experience of the Movements, particularly her work studying the Movement ‘Enneagram 5’ in a Movements class in Sydney, Australia.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose: The objective of this study was to analyze the influence of Entrepreneurial Infrastructure (EI) on the profitability of Sachet Water Firms (SWFs) in Minna. Design/methodology/approach: This was done through the use of personal interviews for the collection of qualitative data from owners/managers of SWFs. The population of the study included all the 165 SWFs in Minna and the sample size was 10 which was determined by interview saturation point. Thematic analysis was used in analyzing the transcribed audio recordings of the interviews conducted. Findings: Findings revealed that there is an EI deficit in Minna, which has led to increased expenses on the provision of alternative EI by SWFs and has increased their operational costs thereby reducing their profitability. Research limitations/implications: Firstly, with thirty-six states in Nigeria, the findings of this study, covering the Capital of only one of the States (Niger) cannot be generalized for the entire country, rather it must be taken within the context of the region covered. Secondly, only one industry out of many that make up the Nigerian economy is selected for investigation. Thirdly, the researcher was faced with the negative attitude of some respondents who were not willing to participate in the research or provide the needed data for analysis. Lastly, not all the SWFs in Minna were included in the study, only those that have operated for up to three years were included. Future studies can bridge these research gaps by carrying out research in other parts of Nigeria on the same subject matter. Practical implications: Findings of this study would be of help to the existing SMEs in Nigeria, particularly the SWFs in further understanding the complexities of the infrastructural challenges militating against their growth and how to overcome them. Originality/value: This study contributes to the body of knowledge on the nexus between EI and the general performance of SMEs. Paper type: Research paper.

Abstract (sommario):
Attempting to approach the sacred through film as exemplified by the analysis and interpretation of the way of a yurodivy in The Lonely Voice of Man by Alexander SokurovThe author emphasises the relation between content and form in the film The Lonely Voice of Man by Alexander Sokurov, and makes a point to place the film within an interpretation space which takes into account basic anthropological categories, such as those of space, time and the human (the protagonist). The artistic devices applied in the film lead to a degradation of the image, while the symbolism present in this debut work refers to the theme of the journey of the soul. All these elements allow us to see in The Lonely Voice of Man certain aspects shared with the Orthodox icon. In this context, the story of the main character can be perceived as the way of a yurodivy (“fool-for-Christ”), who has to refrain from temptations and practice asceticism in order to attain spiritual perfection and reach the sacred. Symbolika obecna w filmie nawiązuje do motywu wędrówki dusz. Wszystkie elementy stanowią podstawę do tego, by odnaleźć w debiucie Sokurowa cechy nawiązujące do prawosławnej ikony.

Abstract (sommario):
We study a Bertrand duopoly game in which firms adopt a gradient-based mechanism to update their prices. In this competition, one of the firms knows somehow the price adopted by the other firm next time step. Such asymmetric information of the market price possessed by one firm gives interesting results about its stability in the market. Under such information, we use the bounded rationality mechanism to build the model describing the game at hand. We calculate the equilibrium points of the game and study their stabilities. Using different sets of parameter values, we show that the interior equilibrium point can be destabilized through flip and Neimark–Sacker bifurcations. We compare the region of stability of the proposed model with a classical Bertrand model without asymmetric information. The results show that the proposed game’s map is noninvertible with type Z 0 − Z 2 or Z 1 − Z 3 , while the classical model is of type Z 0 − Z 2 only. This explains the quite complicated basins of attraction given for the proposed map.

Abstract (sommario):
Mushrooms containing psilocybin have been used in Indigenous healing ceremonies in Mesoamerica since at least the sixteenth century. However, the sacramental use of mushrooms was only discovered by Westerners in the early to mid-twentieth century. Most notably, the meeting between amateur mycologist Robert Gordon Wasson and Mazatec curandera María Sabina in 1955 resulted in the widespread popularization of ingesting “magic mushrooms” in the West. To Sabina and the Mazatec people, psilocybin mushrooms were sacred and only to be used for healing. However, Western “hippies” viewed mushrooms as psychedelic drugs which they consumed with little regard for cultural sensitivities, rendering the mushrooms desacralized. This article argues that the desacralization of psilocybin mushrooms constitutes a form of spiritual abuse that has had far-reaching and long-lasting consequences at individual, local and global levels. Further, acknowledging and understanding the desacralization of psilocybin mushrooms as spiritual abuse has important implications for restorative justice and the understanding of psilocybin as a sacred medicine.

Abstract (sommario):
The tree stands as a sacred symbol in many faith traditions. Unsurprisingly, nature-based new religious movements are no exception. This article considers the manifestation of sacred trees in a number of religious traditions, including Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander spirituality, Abrahamic traditions, Ancient Egyptian religion, Buddhism, Hinduism, Norse mythology, the Shinto faith, and nature-based new religious movements. After this initial section, I present the findings of a fieldwork project undertaken in 2016. Using the survey as a tool, this project enquired into the use of trees, plants, and private gardens among practitioners from nature-based new religious movements. This survey makes use of both quantitative and qualitative survey methods, having been distributed to various nature-based new religious movements in New Zealand, Australia, Europe, the United States, and the United Kingdom. Despite extensive tree lore, these survey results present the tree as a peripheral plant in the practitioners' everyday practice, with the garden as a whole being more critical than any single variety of vegetation.

Shreve, Adam Terrence. "Framing the sacred : an analysis of religious films in Zimbabwe". Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/22006.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This is a study of the production, content, distribution, and reception of different religious films in Zimbabwe, with an emphasis on the audience’s initial reception of the films. Informants’ self-identified religious beliefs and their reception of these selected films are analyzed primarily by using qualitative methods to understand better the interplay between film and religion in Zimbabwe. The films studied in this research are The Jesus Film (1979) created by Campus Crusade for Christ and indigenous, short Jesus films created locally in Zimbabwe in 2012. In order to answer the central research questions of this study, two main approaches are employed: the first is a holistic approach to the analysis of these films. The primary question within this approach is: in what ways do the production, content, and distribution of The Jesus Film and indigenous, short Jesus films affect the reception of the films among informants in Zimbabwe today? The second approach specifically addresses the interchange between the audience members’ self-identified religious beliefs and their reception of the films. There are two central research questions within this approach. First, in what ways may pre-existing perceptions of Jesus shape informants’ responses to and interpretations of Jesus as he is portrayed in The Jesus Film and in indigenous, short Jesus films in Zimbabwe today? Secondly, how might the viewing of these films affect those perceptions of Jesus? Based upon the careful analysis of the original data that emerges from the field work of this research, the conclusion provides a series of answers to these questions, revealing new insights into the interplay of film and religion in Zimbabwe.

Balstrup, Sarah Katherine. "Spiritual Sensations: A Study of Cinematic Religious Experience and Evolving Conceptions of the Sacred". Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/18786.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The secular, pluralist culture of the West encourages a subjective approach to spiritual truth where stimulating emotional experiences, such as those provided by film, can contribute to personal conceptions of the sacred. This thesis examines three films, Stanley Kubrick’s 2001:A Space Odyssey (1968), Gaspar Noé’s Enter the Void (2009) and Lars von Trier’s Melancholia (2011) arguing that these directors harness the affective properties of film just as religious practice adopts particular techniques in order to generate altered states of perception. Powerful feelings of dissociation and indescribable significance typical of mystical testimony appear in viewer responses to these films, demonstrating the continued sacralisation of such states of mind. In their own way, each film confronts the viewer with an apocalyptic revelation of the impersonal forces of the universe, moving away from personhood and the human narrative, into pure sensation. They present a non-deterministic spiritual truth that can be intuited but not explained, mirroring developments in the religious sphere. Investigating the relationship between cinematic technique and religious experience, this thesis offers an alternative approach to the study of religion and film that has been principally focused on narrative symbolism and the dramatisation of values. This study makes a further contribution to the field by analysing films contextually, considering viewers’ subjective responses in light of religious and cultural change.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Cinema was born in a secular world where man tried to evolve through the machine. The origin of the 7th art is not connected with religious or ceremonial practices like painting or theater. The cinema is not the result of religious expression, yet the sacred has ceased to appear in many forms. Robert Bresson was able, in his films, sanctify the daily life of any man, constructing the space piece by piece. In the works of Tarkovsky, the sacred is taking shape thanks to the evolution of the character, which exceeds gradually. However, in Tunisian cinema, the sacred is essentially related to religion. Whether in films Nacer Khemir, Nouri Bouzid or Ridha Behi of the sacred is built on a vertical axis. This is a sacred that is defined - mainly - due to the relationship between man and his God. Is it then the Islamization of film policy in Arab countries reinforced this superposition of sacred and religious? How the Arab-Muslim could trace the lines of the sacred and its limits as he know what he is?

Abstract (sommario):
This creative thesis is a braided narrative in which I explore the promised lands of Utah through my travels in the summer of 2008, the Cold War defense industry, and the early career of writer Edward Abbey. America's domestic and foreign policy shifts in the first decade of the Cold War contributed to the rise of modern environmentalism and to the creation of countless new religious movements in the late 1960s and early 1970s. To illustrate the cataclysmic upheavals of this era, each chapter of this thesis has been organized according to anthropologist Anthony F. C. Wallace's schema of revitalization movements. In both an historical and personal context, I investigate the tensions between freedom and preservation, between defense and vulnerability, and, ultimately, between solitude and community.

Abstract (sommario):
Ystad is a popular tourist destination for Swedish and foreign visitors, and has been for a long time. The city with its nice environment and its historic buildings attract tourists to the region. After filming Henning Mankell's novels about criminal inspector Kurt Wallander, set in Ystad, the number of tourists has increased even more to the region. The relationship between books and movies is an essential part of the tourism that occurs after a story about a fictional character in an existing environment. We would therefore consider movie and literary tourism and its impact on a location interesting to examine. To conduct the study a qualitative approach with qualitative interviews. was applied. Film and literature tourism is increasing in the tourism industry and it is hence relevant to study its existence and significance of a place. The results of the study show that the effects of a destination in film and literature tourism are numerous. When a place is illustrated through movies or books it may get a "sacred" aspect for its biggest enthusiasts. The location depicted may also use the films and the books as a marketingiimethod and through the strengthening of its brand. However, collaboration between public and private actors works well in order to take advantage of location-based film and literary tourism in the best possible way.

Abstract (sommario):
Archaeological research at the Cerro Ventarrón and Collud-Zarpán complex, which began in 2007, has revealed the origins and emergence of early civilization in the Lambayeque Valley. The Huaca Ventarrón Temple was the core of a primeval ceremonial center whose first phase is dated around 2035-2300 BC. This center complex includes the archaeological site of Arenal, located on a hillslope to the southwest. The site has 1 square kilometer of Archaic Period monumental architecture. During the Formative Period, probably beginning in the Initial Period, the Collud-Zarpán site, situated at the northeast end of the Huaca Ventarrón Complex, was the valley’s theocratic capital. It covered more than 2 square kilometers of ceremonial architecture spread between two mounds aligned east to west.

Lewis, Heidi Diane. "Speaking Out of the Dust: Religious Reenactments with the Specific Iconic Identity of Place". BYU ScholarsArchive, 2006. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/505.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Sometimes, the place where a play is performed is as important as or more important than the play itself. The first known theatrical rituals were performed in spaces which came to hold deep religious significance. Many religious traditions regard certain places as sacred because of spiritually significant events which took place there, sometimes involving the presence of Deity. In an effort to build on that sacrality, sometimes religious cultures bring theatre to these spaces, which, in turn, tend to alter the nature of the theatrical event. This seems especially true in regards to theatre which presents a re-enactment of the events which originally sacralized the performance space. Creating a theatrical performance at the same space, and recreating the same event which made the space sacred in the first place, gives the theatrical event a reflexive quality which performances in a space designated for theatre do not have. The Passion of Osiris in Ancient Egypt and the celebrations and commemorations of the early Christian Church are two examples of theatrical reenactments of sacred events in sacred spaces. Although such performances have been uncommon since those of the early Christians, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints offers two comparable performances today (the Hill Cumorah Pageant and the Nauvoo Pageant); they are also reenactments of sacred events framed by the sacred spaces where they originally occurred. The main commonality of my focus is the sacred physical space which frames each of the performances as a sort of ethereal proscenium arch or a silent witness of sacred events.

Abstract (sommario):
Speaking to the graduating class of Kenyon College in 2005, David Foster Wallace defined the value of education as the ability to choose how one sees the world. “It is within your power,” he suggests, “to experience a crowded, loud, slow, consumer-hell-type situation as not only meaningful but sacred, on fire with the same force that lit the stars.”2 The scene that Wallace was describing takes place in a supermarket, likely one housed within a typical big box structure, over-exposed with harsh fluorescent lighting. In Wallace’s parable, the point is to empathize with the clerks and fellow customers in the crowded supermarket who at first seem intolerable, but may, in fact, be experiencing hardships of their own. But what if this empathetic gaze were extended to the building typology that the scene takes place within? What if one consciously chose to see the oft-maligned architecture of American suburbia not as an emblem of consumerism’s unsustainable reliance on excess and waste, but instead, as an untapped inventory of architectural ideas and tectonics that could potentially be redirected towards different ends.

Abstract (sommario):
Spark Assisted Chemical Engraving (SACE) is an interesting technology for micro-machining several types of non-conductive materials like glass, quartz, polymers and some ceramics. The process takes place in an electrochemical cell with two electrodes immersed in an electrolyte. The electrolytic solution is typically sodium hydroxide (30%wt NaOH) or potassium hydroxide (KOH). The cathode is used as tool and the anode as counter-electrode. When the applied voltage is higher than a critical value (typically around 30V, depending on the electrolyte and tool-electrode geometry) bubbles grow so dense on the electrode surface that they coalesce into a gas film. Electrical discharges occur between the electrode and the electrolyte. Machining begins consequently if the electrode is placed close enough to the surface to be machined (typically 25μm for glass). In the present paper, the forces exerted on the tool-electrode during constant velocity feed drilling is investigated experimentally and a model is proposed. The setup is composed of a machine head mounted on XYZ precision linear stage holding the tool-electrode. The machining head further incorporates a force sensor which is able to monitor, during drilling operation, the force exerted on the tool-electrode based on the zero displacement measurement principle.

Abstract (sommario):
Caesar's wife doesn’t need to be only honest, she has to look honest. This paper is aimed at confirming the relationship between the church and people, in particular the importance of the building look like a church on the issue of man’s orientation and sense of identity, considering that these factors allow the public space to be more dynamic and therefore they generate vitality in urban life. The study begins by clarifying the importance of urban space revitalization in Clichy-sous-Bois, Paris, as a response to the riots of 2005. Then explains the relationship over time between Sacred Space and the City. Subsequently, analyses the results of a survey regarding four 20th century cases of study located in the metropolitan area of Lisbon. Finally, checks that the architectural elements are related with looking like a church and that this appearance influences the sense of guidance and identity of man, allowing the public space to be more dynamic.

Abstract (sommario):
In the last decades, there has been an emergence of an academic discourse called Indigenous knowledge internationally, creating a myriad of possibilities for research led by creative practice. In Aotearoa, New Zealand, Māori creative practice has enriched and shifted the conceptual boundaries around how research is conducted in the Western academy because they provide access to other ways of knowing and alternative approaches to leading and presenting knowledge. The contributions of Māori researchers to the Design field are evidenced through research projects that navigate across philosophical, inter-generational, geographical and community boundaries. Their creative practices are used to map the historical trajectories of their whakapapa and the stories of survival in the modern world. They overturn research norms and frame knowledge to express the values of Tikanga and Matauranga Maori. Despite the exponential growth in the global interest in Indigenous knowledge, there is still little literature about creative collaborations between Māori–non-Māori practitioners. These collaborative research approaches require the observation of Māori principles for a respectful process which upholds the mana (status, dignity) of participants and the research. This presentation focuses on four collaborative partnerships between Māori–non-Māori practitioners that challenge conceptions of ethnicity and reflect the complexity of a global multi-ethnic society. The first project is: The Māui Narratives: From Bowdlerisation, Dislocation and Infantilisation to Veracity, Relevance and Connection, from the Tuhoe film director Dr Robert Pouwhare. In this PhD project, I established a collaboration to photograph Dr Pouwhare’s homeland in Te Urewera, one of the most exclusive and historical places in Aotearoa. The second project is: Applying a kaupapa Māori paradigm to researching takatāpui identities, a practice-led PhD research developed by Maori artist and performer Tangaroa Paora. In this creative partnership, I create photographic portraits of the participants, reflecting on how to respond to the project’s research question: How might an artistic reconsideration of gender role differentiation shape new forms of Māori performative expression. The third project is: KO WAI AU? Who am I?, a practice-led PhD project that asks how a Māori documentary maker from this iwi (tribe) might reach into the grief and injustice of a tragic historical event in culturally sensitive ways to tell the story of generational impact from Toiroa Williams. In this creative partnership, I worked with photography to record fragments of the colonial accounts of the 1866 execution of Toiroa’s ancestor Mokomoko. The fourth project is: Urupā Tautaiao (natural burials): Revitalising ancient customs and practices for the modern world by Professor Hinematau McNeil, Marsden-funded research. The project conceives a pragmatic opportunity for Māori to re-evaluate, reconnect, and adapt ancient customs and practices for the modern world. In this creative collaboration, I photographed an existing grave in the urupā (burial ground) at xxx, a sacred place for Māori. This presentation is grounded in phenomenological research methodologies and methods of embodiment and immersion. It contributes to the understanding of cross-cultural and intercultural creativity. It discusses how shared conceptualisation of ideas, immersion in different creative processes, personal reflection and development over time can foster collaboration.

Pereira, Augusto Pimentel, Fernando Wollertt de França, Julianna Crippa e Braian Lucas Machado. "Uma abordagem integrada". In IV ENCONTRO NACIONAL SOBRE O ENSINO DE BIM. ANTAC, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.46421/enebim.v4i00.1926.

Testo completo
