Rose, Katherine Mae. "Multivalent Russian Medievalism: Old Russia Through New Eyes". Thesis, Harvard University, 2016. http://nrs.harvard.edu/urn-3:HUL.InstRepos:33493416.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis explores representations of medieval Russia in cultural and artistic works of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, with an eye to the shifting perceptions of Russia’s cultural heritage demonstrated through these works. The thesis explores the history of medievalism as a field of study and interrogates the reasons that medievalism as a paradigm has not been applied to the field of Russian studies to date. The first chapter is an investigation of architectural monuments incorporating Old Russian motifs, following the trajectory of the “Russian Style” in church architecture, one of the most prominent and best-remembered forms of Russian medievalism. Chapter two explores the visual representation of medieval Russian warriors, bogatyri, in visual and plastic arts, and the ways in which this figure is involved in the national mythmaking project of the nineteenth century. The third chapter focuses on the Rimsky-Korsakov opera, The Invisible City of Kitezh and the Maiden Fevroniya, investigating the ways that different medieval and modern elements come together in this work to present an aestheticized image of medieval Russia. In this analysis of diverse and far-ranging facets of Russian medievalism in the plastic, visual, literary and performing arts, the complicated relationship between medievalism and the prevalent discourse of nationalism is investigated, opening up new opportunities for scholarly intersections with other medievalisms – in Western Europe and beyond.

Abstract (sommario):
Ethnic relations are an important feature of contemporary Russia. This is especially true in the North Caucasus where ongoing insecurity combined with a depressed economy has led to growing Russian nationalism, xenophobia, and fears over immigration. In Stavropol’skii krai, the only ethnic Russian dominated territory in the North Caucasus Federal District, the situation is especially acute. In this thesis I investigate how the geopolitics of ethnic relations in Stavropol’skii krai, as part of the wider North Caucasus situation, impact on the everyday life of citizens in Stavropol’. I do this through employing an eclectic methodology, including both qualitative and quantitative techniques. Through four research papers, I explore how the built urban environment, through the politics of naming place (for example, street names and monuments), has become a space through which ethnic identity can be (re)produced and contested. I show how ethnic relations are (re)presented and performed in Stavropol’ through the Den’ kraya celebration, a performance that is based on a Soviet-era idealised framing of ethnic relations, and one which is open to challenge. I explore how in summer 2007 ethnic relations turned violent as ethnic Russian and non-ethnic Russian citizens rioted, and I attempt to explain the geopolitics surrounding this. Finally, I show how everyday ethnic relations have turned increasingly violent in Stavropol’ since 1991, drawing on reports from non-governmental organisations and independent researchers. I situate this research within the context of the changing ethnic geography of the krai since 1991. Together, this research represents a geopolitics of ethnic relations in Stavropol’skii krai.

Abstract (sommario):
This dissertation examines the conception and performance of masculinities amongst two groups of Russian men, half of whom live in Russia and the other half in the United Kingdom. A total of forty in-depth biographical interviews were carried out, twenty in each country, with men of different ages and highly different social backgrounds. On the basis of these interviews, the thesis portrays contemporary Russian masculinities as a complex, socially and historically constructed phenomenon, situated within large-scale social and political processes. It explores the most prominent reference points and social hierarchies employed by the respondents in order to negotiate their individual gender projects, and shows how these are culture-specific, context-specific, and rooted both in individual life history and in the social, economical and political realities of different historical periods. While the respondents play an active role in defining and constructing their own masculinities, they do so within the macro-parameters laid down by the state, in accordance with broader socio-cultural and political factors. Shifts in the macro-parameters (such as the collapse of the Soviet Union or migration to another country) change the environment in which an individual lives and give rise to new resources for negotiating masculinity. Like the reference points and social hierarchies referred to above, these new resources are rooted in specific historical, cultural, political and personal events. Each resource belongs to a particular social topography that orients people towards the places, practices and discourses which they need to realise their masculinity. The main empirical findings in the thesis are ordered in accordance with the contexts, reference points and hierarchies for making masculinity which were referred to by the research participants themselves. The dissertation is structured around four contexts which emerged from the data: (i) the Soviet past; (ii) the first post-Soviet decade (the 1990s); (iii) the second post-Soviet decade (the 2000s); (iv) the immigration period. I explore different masculinity construction strategies and the reference points on which they rely as the site of a socio-cultural power struggle that offers a unique prism through which to understand how Russian masculinities and gender relations are validated and contested, and how they change.

Nilsson, R. "Revanchist Russia? : Russian perceptions of Belarusian and Ukrainian sovereignty, 1990-2008". Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2010. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/19223/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The theme of this thesis concerns post-Soviet Russian foreign policy perceptions of Belarusian and Ukrainian sovereignty between 1990 and 2008. In the thesis I argue that Russian perceptions became increasingly revanchist in nature during this period, and that we may distinguish between two different types of revanchism, the consequences of which for Belarusian and Ukrainian sovereignty are quite different. I argue that all Russian perceptions of international affairs are constituted by perceptions of Russia. Thus, perceptions of Belarusian and Ukrainian sovereignty may be divided into three categories, or paradigms, each of which centres on a specific concept that legitimises the existence of Russia, and determines how Belarus and Ukraine are viewed. The three central concepts are the concepts of Law, Power, and Nation, respectively. In the introduction, I outline these paradigms, both in abstract terms and in relation to Russian foreign policy in general, as well as Russian foreign policy towards Belarus and Ukraine. Subsequently, I present my methodology and my literature review, together with a discussion of the theoretical assumptions, which provide the foundation for my argument. Then, I briefly outline Russian foreign policy making during the period relevant for my thesis, before the four main chapters of my thesis outline in roughly chronological fashion how the relative significance of the three paradigms has changed over time. Overall, I find that whereas the paradigm of Power has generally dominated perceptions, the paradigm of Law has gradually lost influence, whereas the influence of the paradigm of Nation has gradually increased. Since I define both the paradigm of Power and the paradigm of Nation as “revanchist,” I conclude that Russian perceptions of Belarusian and Ukrainian sovereignty between 1990 and 2008 gradually became more revanchist in nature.

Abstract (sommario):
Iran and Russia have a subtle relationship. The two nations originally shared a common goal of "limiting American influence." That bonded them, with Russia providing weapon sales, nuclear training, and peacefully sharing a common resource with Iran. Sanctions placed on the Islamic Republic of Iran by the United Nations however, have brought the Russian Federation to reevaluate their relationship with Iran and impose limits, even delaying weapons delivery to Iran in some cases. This paper will analyze and distinguish Russia's position on Iran specifically since 2008. It will describe the teetering relationship up until now, where the Russian Federation is endorsing Iran for being able to bring possible solutions to the civil war in Syria. This paper will attempt to uncover the reason for the unstable relationship, and its correlation to the relationship between Russia, the United States and other Western countries. The trends of the relationship will be looked and the future implications of the unsure relationship will be considered.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis explores the involvement of Russian emigres in disseminating and informing the reception of Russian literature in England. It examines their use of translations and literary commentary as vehicles for propaganda, and considers the impact of their unique approach to literature on both Anglo-Russian relations and English letters. Part One describes the arrival of Russian émigrés in England and their mixed reception: as victims of a brutal regime, mysterious sages, exotic outcasts, Slavic barbarians, or at worst, as dangerous 'incendiarists' to be feared and reviled. It reflects on the welcome and assistance offered them by socialists, feminists, literati and Nonconformists, as well as the dangers they faced from Russian government agents and their English confreres. It then introduces, in turn, each of the five Russian exiles featured in this thesis, providing biographical details, outlining their work in Britain as propagandists and political agitators, and mapping out their political and literary affiliations. Part Two opens with an analysis of the motives - financial, political, cultural, and personal - which compelled Russian exiles to promulgate Russian literature in England. A chapter is then devoted to each of the five émigrés, chronicling their work disseminating the Russian canon, and outlining the circumstances surrounding their translations, lectures, books, journal articles, and publishing activities. Interspersed within these five narratives are discourses on each propagandist's aesthetic vision. Part Three is a case study of the émigré impact on Turgenev's English reputation. It starts by tracing the author's early reception, showing how he was initially regarded in England as a European novelist whose artistry took precedence over his politics, and whose exquisite writing revealed universal truths through its careful selection and presentation of minute details. It then shows how émigré commentary altered perceptions of the author, transforming him from a disinterested artist dealing only in universal themes into a radical critic of various epochs of Russian national life, whose novels revealed important inner truths about the state of Russian society and politics. The conclusion examines what may be termed the 'collateral' effects of émigré commentary on Russian literature and their involvement in translation projects in England. Firstly, it looks at the political impact of their criticism: how the émigré presentation of Russian literature affected Anglo-Russian relations and attitudes towards the first Russian revolution in 1905. It then considers how émigrés helped or hindered reputations of writers according to their own politically and aesthetically motivated preferences. Finally, it looks at the possible ramifications of émigré literary theory on English approaches to literature and criticism, and suggests further avenues of inquiry.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis will study the separation between the three primary eras of Soviet cinema (Tsarist/Provisional Government-era, Bolshevik-era, and Stalinist-era) and how Soviet workers (both urban and rural) were affected by, reacted to, and associated with film propaganda. The thesis will attempt to establish a narrative that follows Soviet film from its early creation and nationalization in 1919 to the heavily oppressive Stalinist era. A variety of organizations, films, and individuals are studied to relate public perception to the use of film as propaganda. The thesis will also focus on the bourgeois film leaders that lead the film industry. Not only will Soviet leaders be studied, but the reaction of urban and rural workers to films will be considered. Soviet film strategy had goals of selling a collective Soviet identity to the urban and rural worker in the Soviet Union. There are similarities and differences between the urban and rural working Soviet, but both groups ultimately rejected the avant-garde style of Soviet film.

The present dissertation has as its main goal understanding the motivation of the Russian Federation in the current Syrian crisis. The central argument is that Russia in the post-Cold War, especially after Vladimir Putin became President of the Federation, change its identity. In this way, in the relation between Russia and the West the country is rediscovering the West as the other , and has retained some Soviet-inspired foreign policy guidelines. In this context, the continuing blockade of Western actions in the current crisis in Syria has roots that are not only of a material strategic nature. This thesis proposes that the Syrian crisis and its historical interconnection with the former USSR and contemporary Russia do not constitute the primary object of Russian foreign policy at this time. The main purpose of the research is to show the obscured character the Russian action in Syria, during the current crisis. The next task is to demonstrate that Russian action in this scenario is more related to their relationship with the West, to its search to become a great power, and its attempt to reoccupy the place of the USSR, to some extent, than to Syria itself. To bring theoretical meaning to the research, will be operationalized concepts of identity, national interests and discursive analysis.

Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of this dissertation is to analyze the Russian Federation&rsquo
s military Policy in Central Asia in 1991-2001. My main concern in this point is to figure out what is Moscow&rsquo
s real intention behind establishing military ties with the Central Asian states and to what extent is Moscow successful in accomplishing this aim? Does the Russian Federation perceive direct threats to its security from Central Asia? My argument is that the Russian Federation does not perceive direct threats to its national security from the region rather she uses these threats to be the main actor in the region by using military means. Throughout the thesis first the shift in the Russian Federation&rsquo
s foreign policy course regarding the &lsquo
Near Abroad&rsquo
and its reflections on the basic security documents of the Russian Federation, second the threat perceptions of the Russian Federation in these regions, third reflections of this shift on Russia&rsquo
s bilateral military ties with these states and finally the role of the changing perception in the formation of regional collective security formations are to be analyzed.

Shuvalova, Anna S. "Russian female entrepreneurs". Thesis, Bucks New University, 2009. http://bucks.collections.crest.ac.uk/9786/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 and subsequent transition of the Russian Federation from a command economy to a free market economy changed the economic, political and social landscapes in the country enormously, opening the way to legalized entrepreneurship in the form of private business ownership. Women took an active role in this process, increasing the number of female-owned enterprises, expanding into new fields of business and contributing to wealth and jobs. This study aims to undertake qualitative research on female entrepreneurs in Russia, notably amongst women owner-managers of small and medium sized firms in Moscow, and to examine what motivated Russian women entrepreneurs to launch and manage their own businesses as they themselves understand it. The focus of this study is on women entrepreneurs and their entrepreneurial experience, rather than on their businesses. The research is based on 30 in-depth phenomenological interviews, which give rich descriptions of the women’s entrepreneurial experiences from the participants’ point of view. The study provides insights into Russian women entrepreneurs’ motivation, personal traits and management styles, which have been relatively under-researched in the literature. It also affirms the importance of the institutional context affirmed by other researchers (Aidis et al, 2005; Estrin et al, 2005; Peng, 2001; McMillan and Woodruff, 2002), who have undertaken research in former transition economies. The findings of the research confirmed that the women from the sample were motivated by external factors to start-up their businesses: they were either pushed into entrepreneurship by necessity, or drawn to it by favourable opportunities. When reflecting on their motivation, they identified intrinsic motives, such as the need for achievement and recognition, a desire to help others and to be a leader, to have an interesting job, fulfil their potential and realize their dreams. They attributed their success in business to their intuition, interpersonal and leadership skills, and stressed the importance of a strong personal drive, faith and the capacity to love humanity. In the context of an unstable business environment in Russia, the women were prudent when weighing risks, and relied on their personal informal networks to address complex situations in an effective way. The research makes a contribution to gender studies, proliferation of subjective qualitative methodological approaches in entrepreneurial research, and links motivation, trait, institutional, human and social capital theories, opening up interesting opportunities for further research on the intersections of these theoretical perspectives.

Zakharova, Maria. "Analyse théorique et comparative du système juridique russe". Thesis, Bordeaux, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017BORD0695/document.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
At their lecturing desk and in some scientific publications representatives of modern jurisprudence have repeatedly raised the issue of «Russia seeking its legal system » . When the USSR ceased to exist as a State, the problem of group identification of the Russian legal system has become even more complicated. However, it is worth considering whether the issue of the initial stage of the Russian legal system formation is in itself a right one ? Or should we focus on its development and less on its formation ? How old is this system ? Is it some decades old, or may be several hundred years old ? And what is it at the moment ? What are the paradigms of its evolution over the protracted historical period ? In the doctoral thesis below the answers to all these questions can be given through the prism of authentic approach of the author to the problems of conceptual and specific assessment of the legal system category

Abstract (sommario):
Our project consists in the discussion of contemporary literature and culture in Russia, especially the question of post-modernism, by a specific focus: the analysis of the winning works of the Russian Booker Prize contest focusing on the process of classification adopted by the judges as well as a overview of the awards in Russia. To this end, we will analyze, at first, critical thinkers and most representative of this \"prose alternative\" or post-modern, always with a historical foundation. Understanding the individual post-Soviet is of fundamental importance to deal with the issues and characters of novels winners. In a second step, our work is to investigate the criteria used by banks in order to try to find (if any) a common point among some of the winning works. Think about these points will be extremely important to understand the value systems of the critics involved in the awards process, and contribute to the enrichment of a new analytical approach of the new Russian literature and some of its most prolific names.

Abstract (sommario):
The French personalist movement (1930-1938) finds its origins in French Neo-criticism and Thomism, and German existentialism. The contribution of Russian religious-populist philosophy has not yet been studied. Nikolai Berdyaev (1874-1948) incorporated this tradition in his philosophy. Exiled after the Russian Revolution, he brought his version of Russian "personalism" to France, where his works were seized as a manifesto by the French personalist movements L'Ordre Nouveau and Esprit. Alexandre Marc (1904-), another exile, and Emmanuel Mounier (1905-1950) tried to reconstruct the Russian mir as a French institution. Populism envisioned Russia as a decentralized federation of autonomous mirs; likewise, French personalists advocated a federalized European union in which communal patries would serve as the primary unit of government. Russian populism presented models for and was perpetuated by the French personalists. The influence of Russian ideas on French personalism offers a new dimension to the History of ideas.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis examines the role nineteenth-century women's literary journals, specifically Ladies' Journal (1823--1833), played in the development of Russian literature. The longest-lived and most-circulated of the pre-Soviet women's literary journals, Ladies' Journal was well-positioned to have contributed to the on-going formation of a national literature through its influence on the Russian woman writer and reader. Ladies' Journal served as a forum for new Russian women writers and translators. It also promoted the discussion of women's issues. However, Ladies' Journal had a contradictory editorial policy concerning women and literature. While advocating women stake their own ground as writers, Ladies' Journal modeled the type of writer it wanted. The ideal writer was the inspiration of male poets and did not differ from the Romantic heroine or the ideal Romantic woman. This was a gesture in the spirit of the time, but it had consequences for Russian literature and for the poetics and politics of Russian women's journals to come.

Sheeler, Ralph A. "Glasnost : a Russian fantasy". Virtual Press, 1991. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/834136.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Chapter one began with an introduction to the concept of glasnost and the events surrounding the first four years of Mikhail Gorbachev's reign as General Secretary of the Soviet Union. This rhetorical study gained its thrust from an Aristotelian definition of rhetoric. The method proposed was one of Ernest Bormann's fantasy theme analysis. This study looked at mediated fantasy themes as they chained out in the Western media regarding the glasnost campaign.Chapter two presented the setting for the dramas of glasnost with a look at the history of Soviet leadership and the impact each General Secretary had on Soviet society. Chapter three examined the characters of glasnost. 9iographical information was presented on the players of the dramas. Finally, chapter four examined the media's rhetoric as it chained out the dramas of glasnost through Mikhail Corbachev and his battles with antagonists from the left, from the right, and from within.

Grosman, Anna. "Russian governance and investment". Thesis, Imperial College London, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10044/1/19236.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Research on firm’s investment behaviour is central to corporate finance. Investment policy can be explained by many corporate finance theories involving the choice of financing (debt vs. equity vs. internal funds), agency costs (management vs. monitoring blockholders), asymmetric information (between management and providers of external finance) and moral hazard (the choice of level of risk of an investment project). Research on governance focuses on whether internal and external governance mechanisms improve firm value and profitability, and shareholder wealth. This focus on profits and returns continues to dominate the management literature, despite the widespread recognition that investment behaviour is at the basis of firm growth and productivity and contributes largely to shareholder value. Studying investment behaviour allows assessment of whether the controlling owners are re-investing their gains in long-term assets or taking them out as cash or dividends. These alternatives have drastically different implications for firm productivity growth and the dynamism of the economy. This thesis addresses this issue and investigates the question of how governance influences investment behaviour. I argue that investment depends not only on individual governance mechanisms but also on a combination of these mechanisms. In order to test and provide evidence supporting this argument, this thesis contains three essays that consider the effects on corporate investment behaviour of transparency and disclosure (TD), ownership networks, blockholders and board composition, and studies the effects of substitutability or complementarity between these governance mechanisms. The Russian context serves as an appropriate setting to examine these effects since governance plays a bigger role in this emerging economy than in a developed economy.

Solywoda, Stephanie. "Internal visions, external changes : Russian religious philosophy 1905-1940". Thesis, University of Oxford, 2014. http://ora.ox.ac.uk/objects/uuid:57d397d1-0a4d-484b-b325-a2977c5f23b7.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis tests the hypothesis that between 1905 and 1940 Russian religious philosophy changed, and that this can be gauged by looking at how the meanings of four ideas (all-unity, sobornost', Sophia and Godmanhood) changed in that time. By looking at religious philosophy through these ideas we can better understand the intellectual climate of the period. The proposal that Russian religious philosophy should be considered a coherent school of thought and the hypothesis that it would be useful to look at its four central ideas are raised and challenged. The theory that a 'discourse' of religious philosophy united texts in this period is examined, and it is concluded that discourse theory can act as an aid in analysis of religious philosophy. Religious philosophy before the Revolution, the history of the Revolution and its influence on philosophy are examined and its productivity is explored. Post-revolutionary Russian religious thought focusing on the experience of exile is also examined, concluding that the political and social upheaval that Russians were subjected to in the first half of the twentieth century added to and complicated the meaning of the Revolution. Themes of isolation and exclusion become more prevalent in emigration, and religious philosophy also becomes more theological. The findings of this research are (1) that changes within religious philosophy took place and can be detected through the careful study of the ideas that make up this philosophy; (2) that these changes can only partially be attributed to external circumstances because internal constraints also affected the capacity of these ideas to change; (3) that these changes were part of a decline in production, popularity or relevance of religious philosophy; and (4) that it is possible to explain why certain areas of their use remained relevant while others became obsolete.
