Abstract (sommario):
Abstract: This paper is an investigation carried out in a rural community in northern Nicaragua (Estelí department) in 2007. The research aims to determine the impacts of international migration on rural families in this expulsive region. Taking into account a multi-polarized migration space (Nicaragua, Costa Rica and the United States), we focus on mechanisms that transform the organization of production and household economy in the place of origin. We describe the dynamics of migration in the area and explain the relationship between these different paths and socio-productive structures of the families of migrants. The survey conducted with families who remain in the community of origin allows us to account for the way how remittances are used more specifically in the context of domestic farm to finally give an overview of the scenarios that can arise around land and migration resources in Nicaraguan rural families. Throughout the text, we emphasize the characteristics of different migration routes (depending on country of destination, time frames, distances, the possibilities of circulation) and their different impacts in terms of productive organization of rural households involved in migration.Résumé : Cet article est le fruit d’une enquête menée dans une communauté rurale au nord du Nicaragua (département d’Estelí) en 2007.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Rural families and households make a basic framework for understanding the rural way of life. This relation is especially interesting under the recent and difficult post-socialist transition in places such as Serbia. Previous research has shown that the transition and its benefits are not distributed equally. This has induced social and economic disparities, at the expense of the social attractiveness of rural areas. These disparities have influenced characteristics of Serbian rural families and households, their survival strategies and their roles in the reproduction of the rural way of life. We started research with three assumptions: a) depopulation of Serbian rural areas continues under the post-socialist transition, b) transitional risks produce partial retraditionalization of Serbian rural family relationships, and c) characteristics of Serbian regions affect characteristics of rural families and households. The analysis confirmed rural depopulation. In the decade 2002–2011, there was the most significant decline ever in the number of Serbian rural families. This signified the negative impact of transition on rural areas. Besides this, the research confirmed that contemporary Serbian rural families and households still have some traditional features (multiple generations, relics of the role of head of the traditional rural family) which enable them to cope with transitional risks. A third finding proved that characteristics of Serbian rural families and households depend on regional characteristics. Within the regions that are more socially attractive and where the risks of social exclusion are lower, retraditionalization of rural families is less noticeable. It can be concluded that contemporary Serbian rural families and households survive throughout transition periods depending on their characteristics, but also characteristics of their social environment. Stronger social magnetism of a region is manifested in stronger rural social vitality. That is reflected in stronger modernization of rural families and households.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper investigates economic happiness of skipped-generation families in rural north-eastern Thailand. The qualitative methodological approach was implemented in the study. Data collection was conducted in April - May 2018 and in-depth interview was used as a research instrument to collect data from two groups of key informants, including 1) community leaders, community seniors, and community commitees, In total eight persons, and 2) skipped-generation families living in a rural north-eastern region of Thailand, in total twenty families. Data analysis was done by the content analysis method. The study indicated that skipped-generation families are the familes with grandparents and grandchildren living together. Most families have an agricultural occupation, because they have a lot of land by inheritance and divided into two parts: housing and farming. Mostly agricultural income by sugar canes and farming can earn 2,400 USD per year. Moreover, remittances from international migrant only 450 USD per month is spent on family expenses and education of grandchildren. Some families do not have enoughmoney to invest in farming in the next year, and they have a lot more debt than 3,000 USD from a migrant who goes to work abroad. However, skipped-generation families have a perception of economic happiness "An empty hand is no lure for a hawk, no man is happy who does not think himself so" So, skipped-generation families must take this view to manage the economic situation of the family, even though the incomes are insuf-ficient to cover their living and lack of labor due to migrant workers going to work abroad. This affects the economic happiness of skipped-generation families to sustain their living in a rural society.SKIPPED-GENERATION FAMILIES:Economic Happiness in RuralNorth-Eastern Thailand

Abstract (sommario):
25 Background: Previous studies have shown that individuals with cancer who live in rural areas have worse cancer-specific outcomes compared to their urban counterparts. Differences in access to high-quality cancer care and adequate social support may explain some of the observed disparity. Rural patients with relatives in urban areas may have better access to care via an increased ability to navigate the healthcare system than their rural counterparts without relatives in urban areas. In this study, we examine the possibility of a family-based social capital effect on genitourinary cancer survival. We hypothesized that rural patients who have family members living in urban areas have survival outcomes similar to their urban counterparts. Methods: We performed a retrospective cohort analysis of individuals diagnosed with genitourinary cancers, including prostate, bladder, kidney, penile, and testicular cancers. We constructed familial networks using the Utah Population Database (UPDB). Patients were classified as living in either rural or urban areas based on the rural-urban commuting area (RUCA) codes associated with their zip code of residence at the time of cancer diagnosis. Adult first degree relatives (siblings, parents, children) were identified and classified as urban or rural based on the zip code or county of residence at the time of the patients’ diagnosis or, when unavailable, the county or zip code of residence before or after diagnosis. Overall survival (OS) was analyzed using Cox proportional hazards models. Results: We identified 24,746 individuals diagnosed with genitourinary cancer between 1968-2018. Median follow-up was 8.72 years. After adjusting for sex, age, race, cancer type, health improvement index (HII), and Simpson’s diversity index, urban patients had the best OS at 5 and 10 years (reference group). Rural cancer patients without an urban first degree relative had the worst outcomes with OS hazard ratios at five and ten years of 1.4 (CI 1.23-1.58) and 1.4 (CI 1.26-1.55), respectively. Having an urban first degree relative ameliorated much of the urban-rural disparity with five- and ten-year OS hazard ratios of 1.19 (CI 1.07-1.31) and 1.12 (CI 1.03-1.21), respectively. Conclusions: Individuals diagnosed with cancer who live in rural areas have worse survival as compared to their urban counterparts, but this relationship appears to be heavily influenced by the presence or absence of relatives who live in urban areas. Further research is needed to better understand the mechanisms through which having an urban family member may contribute to improved cancer outcomes for rural patients. This may help in the crafting of policies that can reduce urban-rural cancer disparities. Abstract (sommario):
The British educational sociologist B. Bernstein (2003) believed that in human social communication, the language signs used by people can be divided into exquisite signs and restrictive signs. Exquisite symbols include the arrangement of complex grammatical sentences and general semantics; while restricted symbols consist of simple, low-selective and restricted grammars and words, relying on the semantics of a specific context. Children born in middle-class families are familiar with and mastered exquisite symbols in their interactions with their parents, which is the basis for them to easily obtain excellent academic studies. Children born in poor families are familiar with restrictive symbols in their interactions with their parents. The language symbols used in the school education environment are mostly exquisite symbols, or standard academic language. If children from poor families cannot master the exquisite symbols, it will affect their understanding of the learning content, prone to learning difficulties, and lead to poor academic achievement.

Abstract (sommario):
Families are increasingly understood as inter-related systems where each component interacts with other components in diverse ways. Contemporary research on families which have children with disabilities emphasises the complexity of families and the futility of searching for one characteristic of a family as predictive of family outcomes. The current study investigated the relationship between family needs, family supports, and demographic information for rural families who were eligible for early intervention services. The study did not attempt to review specific early intervention services, but rather to associate the characteristics of services which families found most and least effective. The results are discussed in terms of the practice of providing family-focused models of service delivery. This project was funded by the Golden North Centre, Spastic Society, Bendigo

Abstract (sommario):
This study examined whether the distribution of household labor including childcare in Malay families varied as a function of the gender of parents and their rural-urban residence. Using a convenience-sampling approach, we interviewed mothers and fathers from 50 rural and 50 urban intact Malay families in peninsular Malaysia. We employed the tenets of the bioecological systems theory to interpret the findings. Multivariate analysis of variance revealed that mothers spent more time doing housework, laundry, childcare, and preparing meals than fathers did and fathers spent more time in maintenance and shopping for food than mothers did in both rural and urban families. Whereas urban fathers spent more time in childcare and shopping for food than their rural counterparts did, mothers and fathers in urban families equally participated in keeping track of expenses. The discrepancy between mothers’ and fathers’ time engagement in childcare was less in urban families than it was in rural families. Mothers were more engaged in traditional areas of household labor than fathers and compared to rural fathers, urban fathers spent more time in most household tasks including childcare. In view of rapid urbanization and multiethnic social context, the current findings are important because they highlight the contemporary patterns of parental engagement in household labor including childcare in understudied Malay families.

Abstract (sommario):
The historical shift in focus in special education from individual treatment to family support has led to the need for an ecocultural perspective in the delivery of services to families living in rural communities. This need is met by understanding the developmental niche of such families and by distinguishing the particular characteristics of rural communities from urban societies. Characteristics addressed here include the role of the individual and the community in supporting development and responding to the phenomenon of disability; the social and economic circumstances present in rural communities; and the rural constructions of gender, work, and schooling. Using examples drawn from farm families, structural and economic factors are explored to better understand how to support rural families with a disabled child. Implications for rural special education policy and practice are suggested including the need to understand the diversity of rural communities, the importance of relationship-based services, and the value of an ecocultural perspective in the conceptualization of support services.

Abstract (sommario):
Family education investment is an important mechanism that affects the stratification of urban and rural education in China. This article analyzes the urban-rural gap in China’s family education investment and focuses on comparing the two levels of family education expenditure and education participation. The study found that the total expenditure for children ‘s education in urban households during compulsory education is higher than that in rural households, and the gap between the two in terms of extra-school tutoring expenditure is even greater. In terms of family education participation, the education participation behavior of urban families among children of compulsory education stage is more frequent, and the counseling time is longer than that of rural families. Rural families’ care for their children’s life and learning is significantly weaker than urban families. The comparative study of urban and rural family education investment in this article is helpful to understand the formation of urban and rural education inequality, and to grasp the specific differences between urban and rural family children’s education investment in compulsory education stage.

Abstract (sommario):
Within a context of increasing economic pressure in rural America, this study assesses family responses to this change and their consequences from the perspective of the household economy in middle-class families. It draws on the findings of largely separate fields of inquiry, including those on income level and loss, unemployment, and economic adjustments. Using survey and observational data on two-parent families in a midwestern rural county, the analysis shows that (a) adverse income change increases economic pressures and hardship adaptations in ways that match the effect of income level and exceed the influence of unstable work, (b) economic pressures and adaptations mediate the negative effects of economic adversity on emotional health and family relationships, (c) father's negativity in the family represents a stronger link between economic conditions and child behavior than does mother's negativity, and (d) economic pressure and father's negativity increase the risk of aggressive behavior and depressed feelings among boys and girls, especially in the absence of maternal support.

Wang, Yiran, Zhijian Cai e Jie Wang. "The Impact of Digital Technology Use on Passive Entrepreneurial Exit in Rural Households: Empirical Evidence from China". Sustainability 14, n. 17 (26 agosto 2022): 10662. http://dx.doi.org/10.3390/su141710662.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
To reduce the passive entrepreneurial exit of rural families and improve the quality of rural entrepreneurship, we theoretically discuss how digital technology can help rural families to obtain resources in the process of entrepreneurship from a micro perspective to inhibit the passive entrepreneurial exit, and perform an empirical test by using the data of three consecutive periods of China’s household finance survey in 2015, 2017, and 2019. The results show that: First, digital technology use has a significant inhibitory effect on the passive entrepreneurial exit of rural families. Second, the role of digital technology lies in effectively improving the social capital, human capital, and financial capital of entrepreneurial families, thus inhibiting the passive entrepreneurial exit of rural families. Third, the role of digital technology is related to the development level of village social networks and county economic development levels. The average marginal effect of data technology in villages or counties with high development levels is higher. The policy implications are as follows: We should accelerate the improvement of rural digital infrastructure construction, accelerate the expansion of digital services for the people, and enhance the ability of farmers to use digital technology while increasing policy support for farmers’ entrepreneurship.

Abstract (sommario):
The family is essential in improving the older adults’ quality of life, where the family's role can be reflected in the eight family function practices: 1) Religious; 2) Sociocultural; 3) Love; 4) Protection; 5) Reproductive; 6) Socio-education; 7) Economic; and 8) Environmental. This study aimed to determine the differences in family function practices among aging families in rural and urban areas. Data were analyzed using Cross-Tabulation with the Chi-Square and Independent T-test from a sample of 12,391 aging families in the 2019 Program Accountability Performance Survey. The results of the Independent T-test p<0.001 indicate a significant difference in implementing each family function between aging families in urban and rural areas. Despite both regions' low index scores for eight family function practices, aging families in the urban area practice slightly better than aging families in the rural. The characteristics that distinguished the implementation of family functions in urban and rural areas were educational and economic factors. In aging families, economic and love functions are most commonly performed in rural and urban areas, whereas reproductive and educational functions are the least performed. This research suggests intensively socializing about the eight family functions and educating on the importance of reproductive and educational functions in improving the quality of life in aging families.

Abstract (sommario):
In pragmatics, study of how context influences interpretation of meaning, "on record" and "off record" strategies play crucial roles in communication. These strategies are part of the politeness theory developed by Penelope Brown and Levinson. This study uses Brown & Levinson's Politeness Theory to study politeness tactics used in familial interactions in Sialkot, Pakistan. Thus, surveying 40 families from urban and rural areas, the research uses a mixed-methods approach to examine the effects of gender, socioeconomic status & cultural norms. The results show complex communication dynamics where politeness techniques are shaped by societal and gendered factors. Rural families take a diversified approach, whereas urban families tend to communicate on-record. The study revealed that effective communication involves a balance between on record and off record strategies, depending on context, the relationship amid speaker and listener, and potential face-threatening nature of communication. The study provides significant and leading outcomes about pragmatics and further highlights the significance of realizing cultural subtleties in familial interaction & proposes directions for future studies that will use multimodal analytic approaches & examine regional variances.

Iglesias Ortuño, Emilia, e Cristina Ulloa Espinosa. "La mediación de conflictos y sus aportaciones al cambio sociocultural de la familia mexicana". Áreas. Revista Internacional de Ciencias Sociales, n. 42 (31 dicembre 2021): 81–93. http://dx.doi.org/10.6018/areas.488621.

Abstract (sommario):
Mexican families have experienced constant changes since the last century, mainly related to the composition of families, roles attributed to each member, especially gender roles, and the bonding process among generations coexisting in a living unit. In addition, there are other changes related to larger-scale social change phenomena, such as migration from rural to urban areas and migration abroad that has divided families. And the cultural diversity of the country is characterized by contradictions between traditional behaviour and the modern Mexican context. All these changes represent challenges to 21st-century families who must search for strategies to favour personal interactions and their relationship with a changing context. A key element to maintaining family well-being is communication needed to express needs, demonstrate affection and bond, and is essential to peaceful conflict management. In this regard, alternative conflict resolution methods, particularly mediation, are considered helpful mechanisms to enhance communication among family members. Through mediation, an impartial third party assists families to improve and implement their communication abilities aimed at decision making and internal conflict management. Therefore, mediation is a significant resource to develop intrafamily communication and to strengthen healthy family development.

Abstract (sommario):
Suicidal behavior is a major public health problem that has devastating effects on families. Relevant suicide risk factor identification is a critical component to developing effective suicide assessments and interventions. Suicide risk factors vary across countries. Thus, the intent of this seminal research was to investigate suicide risk factors relevant to a small and rural region in the South American country of Colombia. The factors identified in the present Delphi study appear relevant in informing the development and expansion of suicide prevention strategies and community-based programs. Educating family members and other frontline community helpers on the identified suicide risk factors can exponentially increase service resources in underserved and unserved communities.

Abstract (sommario):
Rural poverty appears in several European regions, particularly in post-socialist countries effected by a rapid transformation of socioeconomic system. In the past decade, rural regions may have reacted to challenges of contradictory processes. Migration trends are heterogeneous; unemployment, underemployment and lack of labour power are existing problems at the same time, in the same locality. In addition, the nature of poverty has changed recently. Traditional forms of pauperization are combined with helplessness and inability for future planning and saving up. Goods and status symbols of the consumer society have high importance in families with low incomes and high debt. The aim of this paper is to describe some crucial processes triggering the transformation of family life in rural Hungary by means of a qualitative research conducted in the South Transdanubian region of Hungary. We explored the actual problems and challenges from the viewpoints of local experts (social workers and mayors) and mothers from families connected to local social systems. We also aim to examine family attitudes to labour market, services and consumption, the most important factors effecting socioeconomic conditions of deprived social groups.
