Abstract (sommario):

In this research, the spotlights are aimed on the historical years between 1959 and 1967, with the main purpose of showing the scenic arrangements of the installation, organization and performance of a Rotary Club in a geographical scenery that was in mutation phase. That territory, formerly denominated Promised Earth or Canaan of the Industry, was soon substituted by the nomenclature Steel Valley .The partners founders of that first Rotary Club conceived themselves as foreigners from the Canaan of the State of Minas that emanated "milk and honey". Native from another lands, they met each other and they were met in order to form a service club in the Nacional Valley of Redemption, but with intense institutional entails to an international corporation. Organized under the doctrine of the interest well understood, the associated agents, each one, with his composition and capital volume, of economic, cultural, social, symbolic or political nature, they allowed, through the mechanism of capital convertibility, to concentrate, in the regional community, a power, capable to produce real effects without apparent waste of energy. As a voluntary and oligarchical association, this service club was, in a way, a institutional vehicle, in the local sphere, of appropriation, incorporation, reproduction and diffusion of visions of world of the ideological corpus of International Rotary.

Abstract (sommario):
The main object of this thesis are Rotary clubs taken as multiple features topic and studied from different points of view particularly as a matter of bourgeois sociability and as a national and transnational political object. Its central purpose is to develop the understanding of bourgeois sociability. The thesis is divided in five parts dedicated respectively to the specificity of the object and difficulties that have been encountered, membership and characteristics of this population, sociability, relations between sociability and politics, and the philanthropic and international dimension of Rotarian actions. The author has been working on the field for four years, in an almost ethnographic approach, and uses diverse theoretical points of view to study this object that has been ignored from political and social sciences until now

Abstract (sommario):
This work is the result of a research whose main purpose is to present the discovery of the genesis of the 1st Grade Rotary State School between 1956 to 1971, taking into account the relationships established between the public and the private in this educational institution. Its specific objectives are to answer some questions related to the implementation of this school in the municipality of Ituiutaba that in the selected years was considered "Rice Capital", because it standed out in economic strength for its intensive production of this grain. Therefore, our purpose also was to understand and analyze the governmental educational guidelines present in the period in question; to analyze documents, newspapers and iconographic clippings related to the emergence of the Rotary School in the years 1956 to 1971; to understand and characterize the historical agents in this process and what mechanisms were made for their stay in school, as well as discuss how the time and space for their operation was organized; to discover the relevance of the school's implementation and its contribution to the population of the municipality; to identify how educational thinking circulated during the era in the categories disseminated through the International Rotary Club Institution; and to understand how the correlation/connection between the international organization and the Rotary School has taken place. The methodological procedure for the research was defined in five distinct phases: a visit to the 1st Grade Rotary State School for the collection of official documents and school iconography in the school archives; visit to the Cultural Foundation of Ituiutaba to read newspapers for the proposed period and to the Ituiutaba Town Hall to read the minutes of the City Council; visit to the Rotary Club of Ituiutaba to read the minutes of the period in question, Rotary journals and magazines; consultation with the IBGE to understand the official statistical data regarding the municipality and the State Public Archive; and survey of bibliographic references, presidential messages, Pedagogical Magazines and of teaching. The results showed that the public and private relations present in the genesis of the school prove that they do not always appear in the Brazilian history of education in the form of conflicts, but also of exchange and conviviality. This possibly evidenced the omission of the Brazilian State towards public education. Thus, we conclude that this research provided the disclosure regarding the situation of the public school instituted in the municipality of Ituiutaba in the selected historical period, especially regarding the genesis of the Rotary School. Having completed this work has expanded the corpus of knowledge about school institutions even more, by making a transnational movement that discussed the condition of the institutionalization of the public school, not only at the local, but also in regional and national level. In this transnational movement we also understand the connection between the Rotary Club of Ituiutaba and the International Rotary Club, thus reflecting its dynamics and the ideology implicit in the Rotary principles reflected in the Rotary School and in the Ituiutaban society by some categories.

Abstract (sommario):
There are numerous projects developed by non-governmental organizations promoting peace and international understanding. There are numerous people involved who use their time off volunteering for a cause. However, centenary organizations like Rotary International still have a low degree of notoriety. This thesis is presented in form of case study, unveils outlines of what Rotary is and its main challenges: aging membership and the reduced level of public recognition. To take a representative picture of what is happening in various international clubs 47 surveys were conducted in geographically different clubs. Then, it was created a case study based on these data and also my knowledge of the movement, as a member, participant in various conferences, congresses, seminars, workshops and district councils, as well as conversations and interviews with Rotarians. The suggested approach in solving the case will make it possible to come into direct contact with representatives from Rotary, knowing their actions at the source and have a chance of “being one of them” suggesting strategies for the problems presented, by creating a plan of action to conquer new members and communicate the concept in their community properly.

Engaging Rotary Club - an exceptional international social organization, Changing Lives Corporate Social Responsibility, CSR, is the corporation's commitment to contribute to the people, planet and profit in the quality of life of her employees and families, the local community and quality of the social environments, by steadily maintaining the moral ethics and the profits for economic development through responsible and sustainable approaches. The concept of CSR is far from new in Taiwan. Through the joint efforts of corporations, consumers and media, more and more corporations in Taiwan are aware of that in addition to their own prosperity they are capable of serving as drive force through leadership toward decent social ethics and making most out of the ideal of "Grow self from the society first and feedback to society late on" by substantially and sustainably carrying out the CSR commitment. Keyhon Technology Corp, founded and led by the author in 1985, has been specialized in developing and building high precision electrical device and products through in-house reverse-engineering R&;D and the latest techniques introduced from overseas. Among all products the High-voltage UPS, created and built on our in-house R&;D, set a milestone the field in Taiwan thanks to the strategic approach of steady dedications and sophisticated processes. And As so far this HV UPS is well accepted as the top expertise and precision system nationwide here in Taiwan and it won certification of technique excellence by Taipower Corp. Nowadays, Keyhon is among the top notched corporation list in terms of production scale and competing strength. While attaining career goals, the writer often felt the urge: “Taking your life as a soccer game, you rely on strong second half in win. You spend the first half of your life running for personal success, as the Lesser Self; then the second half expanding and devoting to something much greater than yourself, as the Greater Self, to make your life a meaningful journey, by holding the zeal on continuing learning and taking the CSR enthusiastically.” Often than not the urge of transition arises in your late 40 something at this transition moments of your life you will experience bitter and sweet feelings about your strive, success and more. Years back, in reply to the urge, I decided not to drift on the troubling water of ups and downs; I had a clear picture that to me the peaceful retirement life was coming in merely 10 -15 years, also another picture that I was far from elderly, still full of vigor and creative mind, and the most vital point was that I could not imagine staying home killing time like other “elders” do. More precisely, for the coming primetime, I was determined to "doing something meaningful and best demonstrating who I am as a person, by honing up core competences and putting into practice my ideal of making the world a better place to live through devoting to the society thanks to the increasing 'beyond self-interests' motivation in my mind." So before long I made a choice - to join Rotary Club for 'engaging the exceptional international social organization, changing lives - by taking office of district leadership. A corporation normally makes "contributions" to the society and communities through activities of her expertise in specific industrial sector, and her services. Social care, while being not the purpose of a business corporation, should be 'a must element' within 'the nature' of a meaningful entity no matter being a person or a business entity. The practice of Rotary services by Rotary Clubs in Taiwan is typically performing and making contributions to the communities quietly, in a low key, and all alone - making benevolence without raising the voice. Why? A misinterpretation taking 'social care activities' as "a show" for putting up the air. As a Rotarian I take it as a pride and one of a kind opportunity to address the said misinterpretation among people on Taiwan. Now as I am scheduled to take office of 2015-2016 District Governor for Rotary International District 3500, I am committed to advocate and promote the excellence in Rotary services by making the most out of what I have acquired in various expertise trainings and management knowledge at the EMBA program of NTHU, and making use of my core competencies such as Interpersonal Relationship, Public Relation, etc. and the very passion to Rotary Services. More specifically the goal of Engaging Rotary, Changing Lives" will be achieved and can be achieved by my two fold commitments - to fulfilling the CSR by delivering constructive feedbacks to the society more in Lesser Self role, and to achieve the objectives of advocating Rotary core values, promoting Rotary public image, offering Service above self, and maintaining Rotary heritage, through leadership and more in Great Self role.

Abstract: The main purpose of this research is to determine how a northern Taiwan Rotary Club member chooses to move into a particular retirement facility upon his or her retirement. This research employs Ajzen’s Theory of Planned Behavior model (TPB) to study the behavioral intention of the Rotary Club member. TPB model, constructed by attitude, subjective norm, perceived behavioral control and behavioral intention, is widely adopted to predict and explain individual’s behavior. This research is begun to set about from relevant references, then set up structure and hypotheses of this research according to its theoretical foundation, select proper scale for study tool, adopt snowball sampling, implement questionnaire investigation for total 240 Rotary Club member in northern Taiwan. To effective 203 materials of sample retrieving which account for effective rate of 84.6%, analyze the descriptive statistics, reliability, validity analysis, factor analysis, t-test, one way ANOVA, correlation analysis and structural equation model (SEM). After the empirical research, the major findings as follows: (1)Subjective norm has positive effects on attitude to the particular retirement facility. (2)Consistent with the theory, the results of a structural equation analysis revealed that attitude, subjective norm, and perceived behavioral control positively affected intention to move into a particular retirement facility of the Rotary Club member. (3)The relationship between subjective norm and behavior intention is mediated by attitude. It can be concluded that the study also revealed that Planned Behavioral Theory can be used to explain Rotary Club member’s choice of retirement facility.

The world has become closer than ever before thanks to the advancement of network technology and frequent interaction between humans. In recent years, our environment has changed rapidly, social issues have become diversified, governmental resources are limited and unable to satisfy people’s demands, which cause varied NGOs to spring up like mushrooms and become a strong social force to assist the government and the people in solving various public matters. In addition, NGOs have become the third government beyond governmental departments and profit-seeking institutions, and have contributed a lot to the progress of the whole Taiwan society. How members of Rotary Club feel about social services they participate in will affect how those receiving services feel, for instance, if they feel satisfied, such satisfaction will continuously push social service work to go ahead, and get more people to involve in the charities, therefore, why they participate in and how they feel about social service and study is quite important, and subsequently will pose impact on the loyalty. There still is not enough study on service satisfaction and loyalty of Network Rotary Club members, that’s why we did this study on members of Network Rotary Club, which is 204 in 3500 Network Rotary Club. We handed out 204 questionnaires and got 157 copies back, return ratio is 79.96%, and upon visual inspection, only 129 copies left after deduction of invalid copies. The study result shows that marital status, career status and years of employment in Rotary Club are closely related to service satisfaction. By comparison, years of employment in Rotary Club are not an important factor to service satisfaction. The marital status and career status are important to service loyalty. But, by comparison, different career status is not closely related to service loyalty. The Pearson Product-Moment Correlation Coefficient result shows that service satisfaction and service loyalty are positively and moderately correlated, and correlation coefficient is somewhere between 0.40 and 0.69. Keywords: Network Rotary Club, service satisfaction, service loyalty

By way of constant support and care, the adopted students are hopefully to feel a sense of warmth, and improve themselves to be people beneficial to the society. This thesis applies the approach of case study, a method of qualitative research, acquiring the conclusions as follows: Through the measure of “money attitude” in “Rotary Child’s Adoption Plan,” the adopted students manage, use, and keep record of the money. By doing so, they control the way they spend money and clutivate proper money attitude. The second, through the measure of service learning in “Rotary Child’s Adoption Plan,” adopted students attain a sense of achievement, pleaseure, and a sense of belonging. Further, they keep growing through reflection afterwards. At last, through the predicament encountered, the adopted students acquire experiences of dealing with problems. They also learn the way to act according to circumstances and positive attitude toward life. These experiences, skills, and ability, after internalization, are transformed into motivation for growth, and that is so-called “learning and growth.” As for the final part of the thesis, suggestions are provided for the reference of adopted students, school staff, Rotary Clubs, and following researchers.

Abstract Non-profit organization is a voluntary organization, whose mission is in social services rather than earning profit. Owing to the lack of stable sources of finance supports, non-profit organization needs to dedicate a lot of enthusiastic volunteers to function properly. However, volunteers are vulnerable to personal factors or environmental changes, whose service supplies are highly unstable and risk in the problem of turnover. Meanwhile the organization will follow the development of its own life-cycle, over and over again, rather than be increasingly robust. Therefore, the non-profit organization volunteer management and strategy about organizational life-cycle, are both major issues to organization management. The Rotary Club is selected as research object in this thesis. The study of turnover process of members is from entrance, participating activities and exit. The conduct of research includes collating historical documents and interviewing related members. It is found that the establishment of the Rotary Club aims to friends, mutual benefit and public service. Members with the pursuit of personal success and honor cherish the expectations of invited entrance. The motivation to participating is to make friends and business contacts and to achieve self-service concept. The reasons of exit are including personal factors such as health problem, family, occupy transfer, and not matching the expected value, etc; activity factors such as contents, venues, and time of the coordination; organizational factors such as the lack of organizational socialization, dislike of the organizational culture. The phenomena of turnover are showed in the poor attendance rates. In short, the Rotary Club is a loose binding society, built on mutual trust, mutual love, and mutual assistance among members. The way of organization socialization is to provide diverse activities. Members need to participate actively by themselves. In these activities they can make friends with each others, learn about community rules and culture. The Rotary Club keeps maintaining harmonious atmosphere inside, and systematic screening members by inviting new members constantly on the one hand, allowing members to leave in any discomfort situations on the other hand.

A Study of Service Motivation and Service-learning Satisfaction of Rotary Club Members in Taipei City Abstract Service-learning is in the trend of future social development. Besides, Rotary International is the most long-standing and famous organization of service providing whose terminal goal is exactly “service above self”. Therefore, in this research, the author not only discusses whether those Rotary club members with different demographic background and servicing experience will have different kinds of service motivation and service learning satisfaction, but also analyzes the relationship between service motivation and service learning satisfaction. Finally, the author discusses the theoretical and practical implications of his findings, in order to draw more attention to the importance of service-learning. “The Questionnaire of Rotary Club Members’ Service Motivation and Service-learning Satisfaction” is used in this research, as the research tool for questionnaire survey method. The interviewees are who volunteered to participate in the survey during the Rotary meetings. In total, 448 questionnaires are collected and the return rate is 86%. The empirical analysis is based on perceptual data (446 validated respondents) collected from fourteen Rotary Clubs in Taipei RI3480. The data are analyzed carefully by several statistical methods, including descriptive statistics (i.e. Frequency distribution, Mean, Standard Deviation), reliability analysis, factor analysis, one-way analysis of variance, Schiff's method, Pearson product-moment correlation analysis, and multiple regression. The findings are stated as follows: 1.Little distinction in Rotary Club members’ service motivation due to their genders, ages, education levels, seniority in Rotary clubs, and whether they have sons or daughters. 2.Little distinction in Rotary Club members’ service-learning satisfaction due to their ages, education levels, seniority in Rotary clubs, and whether they have sons or daughters. 3.Female Rotary Club members’ service-learning satisfaction in “the superiority of learning environment” is higher the male members’. 4.The higher education level Rotary Club members are with, the higher service-learning satisfaction in “the diversity of learning content” is. 5.Rotary Club members’ leading experience impacts significantly on their service motivation in “achievement and honor,” and their service-learning satisfaction in “transcendence and enhancement.” 6.Rotary Club members’ motivation in “service and learning,” “achievement and honor,” and “transcendence and enhancement” are significantly influenced by their past experience of participating other related groups. 7.Rotary Club members’ service motivation and service-learning satisfaction are highly positively related. Besides, the relationship between “service and learning” and “the positiveness of learning effectiveness” is closest; however, “achievement and honor” is with the relatively low relation to “the diversity of learning content.” 8.For Rotary Club members’ service-learning satisfaction, perfect prediction of service-learning satisfactions from Service-Learning attitudes: “the positiveness of learning effectiveness” and “the diversity of learning content” are both highly predictable by “service and learning;” furthermore, “the superiority of learning environment” is secondly highly predictable by “achievement and honor.” Based on the previous documents and results of this research, there are suggestions to Rotary Club and related servicing groups proposed as follows: 1.Establishing the mechanism of service and learning. 2.Developing the participation of achievement and honor. 3.Creating the chance of transcendence and enhancement. 4.Establishing the superior environment. 5.Enhancing the effectiveness of positive learning. 6.Enriching the diversity of learning contents. Abstract (sommario):
The thesis analyses the motives of charity and its various forms in the present society. It builds on the critical theory of "studying up", formulated by Laura Nader in 1970s. It considers the difficulties of ethnographic research in an unequal-power terrain, where the anthropologist finds himself in an unwelcome position. Based on a one-year long research of Rotary clubs, the thesis examines the question of whether the charity is a pure act of altruism, following of self-interest, or a combination of both. Charity has lost its significance from its original Christian form over time. Today, it takes the form of a successful marketing tool. For someone it may mean caring for the disadvantaged, for another a simple tool to ease his conscience; for others a convenient pretext for the setting up of a private club. Charity in some respect replaced the Christian confession and like other commodities in the neoliberal system is consumed without creating a long-term relation between the donor and the donee. Rotary International is a worldwide network of private clubs, among its members are leaders in the financial sector, health care, public administration, journalism and science and research. One can therefore examine the Rotary club from an anthropological point of view of emerging capitalism in the...

This study utilizes an ideological rhetorical analysis, applying Marxist and Feminist lenses, to artifacts from Kiwanis International, a prominent global service organization. These artifacts are: "The Permanent Objects of Kiwanis," guiding principles that were codified in 1924; "The Man Who Was God": a brief story about transforming from Kiwanis member to "Kiwanian," published in 1935 and 1985, respectively; and the 2012 "Join the Club" Membership Brochure. The rhetoric of discursive materials is one of the most salient representations of group ideology. In turn, ideology, particularly when it reflects and perpetuates social hegemony, has a normalizing effect on itself. Ideology shapes identity; identity shapes strategies to set process norms that create social cohesion. Norms of social cohesion become culture; culture reinforces ideology. When these components mirror social hegemony and replicate hegemonic power, they create institutions, like service organizations; these institutions then legitimate and normalize positions of social privilege. Ultimately, ideology and social hegemony reveal themselves through organizational and member practices and organizationally-produced discursive material. The purpose of this study is to analyze the historical, socio-political, and socio-cultural roots of Kiwanis International in order to draw logical conclusions about the organization's ideology for the purposes of understanding how that ideology contributes to, justifies, and perpetuates an unconscious, neo-colonial view of philanthropy. Kiwanis International, on an organizational (macro) level and at the club/member (micro) level, is structured around positions of racial, ethnic, socio-economic, linguistic, gender, and religious privilege, and so mimics the hegemonic power centers and dominant ideologies of society at large. In turn, the products and practices of the organization reflect these positions of privilege and inhibits the organization's ability to attract traditionally excluded, disenfranchised, or under-represented groups. Understanding that it is a contentious and futile to simply point where power relations exist and assert themselves, this study emphasizes where "othering" occurs in hopes of mitigating relations of domination and oppression between Kiwanis members and perspective members, and of moving forward the interests of those who have not traditionally been counted among Kiwanis' members but whose presence could save the organization.
