Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
La ronde (« The Round »), an immersive audio-walk commissioned by the Société du Grand Paris in 2016, allows us to analyse the contradiction between adherence and distancing, in relation to the ambiguity of the writer’s position facing citizen consultation and territorial development. The immersive modality of the audio-walk is constantly undermined by ironic and critical distancing effects. Paradoxically, it is also a privileged way of subtly contesting urban planning projects. This paper examines the ambiguities of this work, that plays and does not play the consultation game.

Abstract (sommario):
On the common sense view, an agent is an individual. Communities are collections of individuals, but the community itself is not understood to possess a collective, unified agency. Nevertheless, this view stands at odds with frequent ascriptions of communal agency; e.g., "Oregonians are environmentally conscious," "The team played to win," "The LGBTQ community is pro-gay marriage." If we are to vindicate such ascriptions, we need a theory of the "reality of community," the thesis that under certain conditions, a community possesses a unified, collective agency. This work reconstructs Royce's theory of communal agency through his views of purposiveness and the use he makes of C.S. Peirce's "theory of interpretation." I argue that, for Royce, agency is purposiveness and purposiveness always bears the triadic structure of the process of interpretation. Thus, the process of interpretation entails agency whether at the level of the individual or at the level of the community.

Abstract (sommario):
Feminist epistemologists have often argued that our relationships with structures of power shape the content, expression, and social force of what we know. While feminist standpoint theorists have often maintained that experiences on the margins of social power can lead to better understandings of the roles of systems of oppression in society, more recent writings on epistemologies of ignorance examine the reverse, how experiences from positions of social power limit our understandings. In this project, I draw on the concept of epistemic privilege as it has been formulated by feminist standpoint theorists, criticisms of objectivity and fixed, transcendent truths, and analyses of the relationships between structures of power and concepts of knowing. By considering the works of Sandra Harding, Lorraine Code, and Patricia Hill Collins, among others, I argue that knowledge is situational and contingent and that some individuals possess privileged understandings due to their positions on the margins of power structures. However, I also argue that, in order for feminist epistemology to utilize the concept of epistemic privilege successfully, it must incorporate a concept of error into its considerations of constructions of knowledge. Thus, throughout this dissertation, I examine how a concept of error could bolster efforts to subvert the dominant approaches to knowledge that have upheld male privilege and undermine the patriarchal power structures that rely on them. I propose a form of feminist inquiry that incorporates a method of error sensitivity, which will enable inquirers to recognize when institutions of power, individual limitations, and cultural myths are restricting knowing subjects' perspectives and leading them to commit errors. This concept of error, and the related approach to error-sensitive inquiry, relies upon a commitment to continuous and ever-expanding inquiry by a community, rather than an isolated individual. Thus, I derive much of my conceptual framework from the work of Josiah Royce and his concepts of the Beloved Community, loyalty to loyalty, and communities of interpretation.

Abstract (sommario):
Forest renewal is a key stage in the life of forest stands as it allows the long-term maintenance of the forest and its associated ecosystem services. Among the factors likely to have a negative impact on forest renewal, colonisation by competitive species can slow down tree regeneration, or even block it for several decades. The objective of this thesis is to estimate the impact of competitive vegetation on tree regeneration on a regional to national scale. The thesis is mainly based on the use of French National Forest Inventory (NFI) data.A first step, using the results of a survey of forest managers, was to establish a list of the main competing species for tree regeneration, and to determine the areas where each species is present with a high abundance. Bramble (Rubus fruticosus), Eagle Fern (Pteridium aquilinum) and Purple Moor-grass (Molinia caerulea) are the main competitive species in France, and are each present with a high abundance in more than 300,000 ha of forests with open canopies in France. In order to better understand the ecology of competitive species, the role of canopy openness on the probability of presence and high abundance of competitive species was studied. For a majority of species, canopy cover has a weak effect on the probability of presence of species. Conversely, species abundance was strongly correlated with canopy cover, with high canopy cover being associated with lower abundance for most competitive species. The effect of competitive vegetation on tree regeneration cover was then modelled at the scale of France for the three main species. High abundance of P. aquilinum and M. caerulea is associated with a relative decrease in tree regeneration cover of about 30% and 40% respectively, compared to situations where these species are present at low abundance. Conversely, R. fruticosus has a more ambivalent effect on tree regeneration. Woody regeneration cover increases slightly on average at intermediate R. fruticosus abundances, and decreases significantly at high abundance of this species. Finally, the probability of presence and high abundance of the three main competing species was modelled, in order to identify the conditions of high abundance and to predict the location of the areas potentially impacted by the appearance of these three species when the canopy is opened. The difficulty of accurately modelling the presence and, more importantly, the level of abundance of these species led to models with poor predictive abilities, which did not allow for robust estimates of the conditions at high risk of colonisation by the three species studied. In conclusion, this thesis has shown that tree regeneration problems related to competitive vegetation species are present on significant areas in French forests. P. aquilinum and M. caerulea have a marked negative effect on tree regeneration regardless of their abundance, whereas the effect of R. fruticosus is only negative at high abundances. Finally, this thesis also demonstrated the importance of modelling presence and abundance separately, and identified the main factors that need to be taken into account to better model species abundance

Abstract (sommario):
Graduation exam from 2011 consists of two parts - a common (state) and profile (school). The first plan to hold this form of school-leaving examination appeared for the first government of Vaclav Klaus (Minister of Education Pilip) in 1994. The other nine governments have failed to agree on the form and implementation of school-leaving examination. The agreement was successful in August 2010 during the government of Peter Necas and Education Minister Josef Dobes. The aim was to evaluate the opinions of directors and commissioners of secondary schools of the Středočeský kraj for management activities associated with the common part of school- leaving examination in the initial phase in 2011 and assess whether there are critical points of sub-management activities, and may propose their modification.

Abstract (sommario):
The pragmatist intellectual trend started as an anti-Cartesian revolt by amateur philosophers and became a major inspiration for anti-Taylorian managerial thought. In the early days of the pragmatist movement, a small group of friends fought idealist and Cartesian ideas. The influence of classical pragmatists Peirce, James, Dewey, and Mead, and some of their closest fellow travellers (Royce, Addams, Follett, and Lewis), grew in the first decades of the twentieth century. Some misunderstandings of the central tenets of pragmatism later led to its distortion into the common language acceptance of the word “pragmatism” and contributed to a relative decline in the 1930s, precisely when pragmatism began to inspire an anti-Taylorian managerial movement. Finally the chapter narrates how “the pragmatist turn,” a revival of pragmatist ideas, took place in the last quarter of the twentieth century.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractThis chapter offers an introduction to the field of ethics and the central place of conscience within it. To explicate the idea of conscience, I draw upon the work of nineteenth-century Harvard philosopher Josiah Royce. Royce understood conscience as the product of a certain insight, what he called the moral insight, which he defined as “the realization of one’s neighbor, in the full sense of the word realization; the resolution to treat him unselfishly.” I then go on to illustrate parallels to Royce’s moral insight in the works of Plato, Jean Piaget, Hannah Arendt, Joseph Ratzinger, and Anthony DeMello. This is followed by a discussion of the work of Jonathan Haidt aimed at tracing the universality of conscience across cultures and strategies for putting conscience into action—even in a pluralistic society. I wrap up this chapter with two subsections: (a) some structural remarks about the field of ethics, anticipating the theme of Chap. 3: Can a corporation have a conscience? and (b) two serious objections to the very idea of treating corporations as morally responsible entities. This chapter is an organic part of a larger work about the overall contribution of Kenneth Goodpaster to the field of applied ethics and is best read in the context of that larger work.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractAerospace is a large and growing industry currently dependent on fossil fuels. UK aviation has committed to achieving net zero emissions by 2050.In order for the UK aerospace sector to achieve the sustainability goals, it needs to use the latest technologies while making sure to minimise negative environmental impacts.Ongoing debates claims that the definition of sustainability and its assessment is vague. Companies struggle with quantifying the return on their sustainability investments and necessitate a methodology to aid decision making and quantify improvements against sustainability and profitability. For that reason, this investigation focused on defining a framework to assess sustainability for aerospace manufacturing following a triple bottom line (TBL): profit, people (social responsibility) and planet. The author surveyed a range of major aerospace businesses, including Airbus, BAE Systems, Boeing, GKN, Rolls-Royce and Spirit Aerosystems, who are all industrial partners at the University of Sheffield Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC). These businesses are all working together to identify and solve the common challenges associated with sustainable manufacturing and contributed their thoughts to the development of this definition.Collected information has been integrated in a trade study framework that helps scenario comparison and decision making. Discrete Event Simulation (DES) has been used to test the methodology, defining and quantifying alternative scenarios. The framework developed in this study aims to help ensuring that aerospace companies remain profitable whilst also fulfilling the industrial Partners’ environmental and societal obligations.

Abstract (sommario):
In common with all responsible equipment operators the Royal Navy continues to seek ways to reduce ownership costs. In the particular case of gas turbines, over the last few years, this has taken the form of investment to achieve improvements in fuel efficiency. This route now ceases to offer large scope for improvement. The Royal Navy has therefore carried out an Investment Appraisal into the likely cost benefits which would result from improved life and reliability. The result of this study was to demonstrate a net present value cost advantage from entering into a joint venture development programme with Rolls-Royce to uprate and improve the Marine Spey SMIA.

Abstract (sommario):
Rolls-Royce and a UK Consortium are progressing the design and development of a Small Modular Reactor (SMR) Power Station. The SMR programme is a phased design cycle, progressing through the Rolls-Royce gated review process. The project aims to deploy the first of a kind SMR in the UK by the end of the next decade. In this paper, the development methodology for the reactor core design is discussed, along with a selection of the key technical challenges that have been addressed during the concept design phase. Lessons learned from past projects have been identified, to help improve the design efficiency for the SMR. The concept design has been developed in an iterative fashion, with different analysis disciplines carefully integrated around a common set of objectives. Key economic requirements for an SMR core include maximising fuel economy, cycle length and thermal power while remaining small enough to enable a modular build approach. Top-level safety requirements include control of reactivity, control of core temperature and control of release of radioactivity/radioactive material. A set of surrogate design limits has been used alongside the true safety limits to avoid the need for detailed transient subchannel or fuel performance analysis in this phase. This has allowed the design to mature and be characterised very quickly, while also maintaining high confidence that all performance and safety requirements will be met when detailed analyses are undertaken. This paper describes the different analyses that have been undertaken to date, including a variety of reactor physics and thermal hydraulics calculations. The paper discusses the limits used, how they have been used to optimise the design solution and why they provide high confidence in the core design’s performance.

Abstract (sommario):
A unique methodology and test rig was designed to evaluate the degradation of damaged Nozzle Guide Vanes in a transonic annular cascade in the short duration facility at the Royal Military College. A custom test section was designed which featured a novel rotating instrumentation suite. This permitted 360° multi-span traverse measurements downstream of unmodified turbine NGV rings from a Rolls-Royce/Allison A-250 turbo-shaft engine. Downstream total pressure was measured at four span-wise locations on both an undamaged reference and a damaged test article. Three performance metrics were developed in an effort to determine characteristic signatures for common operational damage such as trailing edge bends or cracked trailing edges. The highest average losses were observed in the root area, while the lowest occurred closer to the NGV tips. The results from this study indicated that multiple span-wise traverses were required to detect localized trailing edge damage. Recommendations have been made for future tests, for test rigs and for ideas to develop performance metrics.

The first section of this paper will discuss the aimed mission and need for the latest Royal Netherlands Navy’s (RNLN) ship class, the Luchtverdedigings en Commando Fregat (LCF) and its derived requirements for the propulsion plant. The choice of a CODOG (Combined Diesel or Gas) propulsion installation as opposed to COGOG (Combined Gas or Gas) or CODLAG (Combined Diesel Electric and Gas), will be explained. The difficult choice between the Rolls Royce Spey SM1C and the General Electric LM2500 gas turbines for the boost role will be explained showing how history largely shaped the choice. The second section of the paper will deal with the challenges of the Spey gas turbine installation, the development of a digital fuel control system, the problems encountered and the challenges yet to be resolved. Discussions on the provisioning and support arrangements will also be made. The last part of the paper will make a short reconnaissance in the near future of gas turbine ship propulsion and the broad thoughts that are shaping the RNLNs thinking.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract The goal of this work is to have standardized quality control of thermal spray coatings incorporated into the Standard Practices Manuals of all aircraft engine original equipment manufacturer’s around the world. With the many manufacturers’ criteria for evaluation of thermal spray materials, laboratories are forced to have multiple criteria/systems to test and analyze coatings. As airlines/repair shops are moving towards overhaul of more variable engine types/models in their shops, the need to have a common evaluation system has been identified and is currently being addressed. A sub-committee of the European Airline Committee for Materials Technology is currently working to formulate this common system for thermal spray coatings evaluation. Participants are from GEAE, Pratt & Whitney, Rolls Royce, SNECMA and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines. The progress and goals of this group will be documented and reported.

Abstract (sommario):
The RTM 322 engine, under development by Rolls-Royce Turbomeca Ltd, is a viable candidate engine for future incorporation in S-70, H-60, EH101 and NH90 helicopters. An important ingredient in the development of the engine is its flight testing, currently being carried out in a Sikorsky S-70C (Civil version of the U S Army UH60 BLACK HAWK). This has not only served realistically to uncover and correct at very early stages those types of problem common to the development of all new engines but has also equally afforded an early look at installation, control and engine/airframe dynamic characteristics which, of course, will simplify later Production Series incorporation. A brief description of the RTM 322 engine design and its development status is given followed by a summary of the installation and flight testing in the S-70C. Ground and flight test results in the S-70C are discussed and data and photographs presented.

Abstract (sommario):
An F402-RR-406A (Pegasus) engine has been subjected to extensive sea-level and altitude operation on a wide range of viable emergency fuels. Sea-level main engine starting was successful for all six fuels and windmilling altitude relight tests were equally flawless, even outside the flight envelope. Cold soak sea-level starting was achieved with DFM of viscosities up to 12 centistokes. Clear inter-relationships between combustor metal temperatures, primary zone flame radiation and optically measured exhaust Smoke Numbers demonstrate a common dependence of these parameters upon the indeterminable primary zone soot concentration. Correlations against fuel properties illustrate the dominance of fuel chemistry over physical properties, even with respect to changes in carbon monoxide and unburned hydrocarbon emissions (and hence combustion inefficiency) at low power. The degrees of premixing and prevaporisation within the Rolls-Royce ‘vaporiser’ fuel injector are considered responsible for the diminished significance of physical properties relative to influences upon conventional fuel atomiser behaviour.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
Fischer-Tropsch fuel is created using a catalyzed reaction in which a blend of carbon monoxide hydrogen gas (syngas) is converted into liquid hydrocarbons over a metal catalyst. The length of the carbon chain completely depends on the reaction parameters (mainly on temperature), empowering the manufacturer to produce different types of fuel. In this experiment, a fuel known as FT8 was created using this method. It is a synthetic form of JP8, a common jet fuel used extensively in the U.S. Navy as well as many commercial applications. This synthetic fuel, unlike conventional Diesel fuels, is colorless and lacks the impurities found in fossil fuels. Because of the lack of additives in the fuel required by the Rolls-Royce Model 250-C20B, the fuel was mixed in varying quantities up to 50% with Diesel #2 and JP5. Utilizing specific equipment, the Model 250-C20B’s exhaust gas composition, power output, and thermodynamic efficiency were measured. Temperatures and pressures were measured for each of the gas turbine’s five state points. Exhaust gas composition and output shaft torque and speed were also measured. The results of these tests were compared with baseline runs conducted with 100% conventional fuels used. It was determined that the blending of fuels did not affect performance, positively or negatively, to any great degree. Power output, fuel consumption, and exhaust gas composition were not significantly affected by the use of mixing the Fischer-Tropsch fuel with the conventional fuels used. However, it was determined that some blends did outperform the baseline tests. It did appear that the 20%–40% blend ratio does slightly increase the fuel’s performance in the engine in most areas.

Abstract (sommario):
The gas pipeline industry continues to respond to the challenges of competitive markets and the need to manage the cost of service effectively. A major cost element being reviewed by the industry is the operating and maintenance expense for its fleet of older turbo compressor units. Many turbo-machinery manufacturers and operators typically quote 100,000 hours as a design limit for service life of turbo compressor components. The Pipeline Research Committee initiated this study to review the life limiting criteria for certain critical components and determine if the design target of 100,000 hours can be safely and reliably met or extended with special component management practices. The first phase of the project was to select the turbomachinery components that would be included in the review. Committee members were surveyed with a detailed questionnaire designed to identify critical components based on: high hours (eg. at or approaching 100,000 hours), the most common engine types operated by the member organizations, and the components of greatest concern from a risk and expense point of view. The selection made covers a wide range of engine types that are of interest to most of the committee companies. This selection represents some 78% of the "high hour" units operated by the committee and includes components from GE Frame 3 and Frame 5, Solar Saturn, Rolls Royce Avon, and Cooper RT56 engines. The report goes into detail regarding the various damage mechanisms which can be the main life limiting factor of the component; creep, fatigue, environmental attack, wear and microstructure instability. For each of the component types selected, the study identifies the life limiting criteria and outlines how the components may be managed for extended life. Many of the selected components can be reliably operated beyond 100,000 hours by following the management practices set out in the report. The decision to continue to operate components or replace with new components is usually based on either a predetermined engineering life limit or retirement for cause. Operating life limits are based on engineering calculations that establish the component life, beyond which the risk of failure is high. Such limits assume a standard, or most often, a worst case set of operating conditions to be conservative for all types of service. Retirement for cause is based on specific inspection techniques applied at appropriate intervals to ensure that damage below a defined limit is identified and the parts are then removed for either refurbishment or retirement.
