Aka, Adou Marcel. "Finances publiques et richesses privées en Grèce aux époques classique et hellénistique". Thesis, Bordeaux 3, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014BOR30016.
Testo completoThesis on the theme '' public finances and private wealth in Greece in Classical and Hellenistic periods '' raises the issue of the relationships and correlations between private wealth and public finances in the cities and kingdoms of the Greek world. During this long period, on the one hand the private wealth were formed independently of public finances by rents from the leasing of certain assets, by mining, trade and banking. In addition, by the intellectual work divination and sport. On the other hand, private wealth would have formed at the expense of public finances by corruption and embezzlement that Greek judges would have indulged in the exercise of their charges. The wealth that were thus formed in one way or another did not serve only for private use. They also served the public finances to overcome financial shortages , grain supply , finance wars , build or rebuild buildings, pay tribute or ransom , make sacrifices , perform embassies and supplying oil to gyms . Therefore, the Greek states had recourse to coercive imposition of tribute, the practice of confiscation and binding and the removal of taxes loans, fines and taxes. Moreover, the Greek states also appealed to the evergetism of the richest people who demonstrated their generosity during épidoseis, public subscriptions’ loans and individual evergetisms

Testo completoThis Ph.D. dissertation speaks to my general research interests at the intersections of development economics, political economy and economic history. Specifically, my research agenda centers around two main axes. On the one hand, by digitizing large-scale historical datasets, I explore the long-term vicissitudes of inequalities in multi-dimensional forms in both Africa and East Asia, in particular their historical determinants (via the advent and end of colonialism, the rise and fall of different political regimes, etc) and their long-run interactions with contemporary development and growth outcomes. On the other hand, I zoom in from a more micro perspective, by designing cross-country survey experiments, in order to understand how people subjectively perceive inequalities and form preferences for redistribution, especially in developing countries where the strong presence of traditional institutions and unique growth trajectories could have shaped citizens to view inequality and development in alternative manners and the insights from which could also inform policy-making for more sustainable development in the longer run. In this Ph.D. thesis, I attempt to answer these questions centering around the aforementioned research dimensions in four chapters, traversing the territories of West Africa and East Asia. In the first chapter, I examine the historical determinants over the design of French colonial institutions in West Africa. In particular, I zoom in on one of the most draconian forced labor episodes embedded in the conscription system at the time, specifically in colonial Mali where military reservists were exploited for public works and railway construction, and estimate the long-term developmental repercussions of colonial forced labor by hand-collecting an enormous historical dataset on colonial soldiers in Mali together with my colleagues researching on development in contemporary Mali. In my second and third chapters, I depart away from colonialism in West Africa, and dive into investigating inequality perceptions and the formation of redistributive preferences in contemporary China. Via two consecutive survey experiments with my co-authors, we find that Chinese citizens’ attitudes towards inequalities and preferences for redistribution differ significantly from the western ideals, and we attempt to rationalize this unique set of preferences with China’s transitional economic experience and low political agency of the population. In my final chapter, I go back into the history of China in the 20th century, and together with my co-authors, we estimate the long-run evolution of Chinese national wealth accumulation from the founding of the Republic of China (1911) till 2020. We find very striking patterns with regards to the dynamics of wealth accumulation of a country having undergone drastic political and development trajectories over the past century, which paves the way for more dialogues on understanding the intricate relationship between inequality and growth in China and the developing world at large in the future

Testo completoFor decades, economists have been interested in studying why and how agents support eachothers, giving a special place to the analysis of private income transfers. Recent applicationsinclude very diverse topics such as: the analysis of capital accumulation, social cohesion andsolidarity, market insurance and interest rates, risk-coping strategies against negative shocksand government policies. The present dissertation analyzes how inter-household transfer decisions, international remittancesand intra-household transfers contribute to shape five fundamental aspects of development:(i) social interactions, (ii) market and household work, (iii) spending patterns, (iv)nutrition and (v) health.Three research questions are addressed using applied data from Colombia, Ecuador and Peru, and multiple econometric techniques. First, is there a relationship between inter-householdtransfer dynamics and distance between donors and receivers? Second, do remittances asymmetricallyshape labor supply responses depending on people’s characteristics? Third, dointra-household transfers influence spending patterns, nutrition and health outcomes? Results suggest that private income transfers play a key re-distributive role, shaping agents’living standards and improving individual and social well-being. In contexts of economic deprivation, where social safety nets are scarce, informality is at stake, institutions are highlyfragmented and the public sector is weak, money and in-kind help from other households orindividuals constitute crucial livelihood strategies to get through the economic world. Thus, enhancing our understanding of this dimension of social behaviors is a must

Testo completoAt the crossroads of the sociology of social classes and the urban sociology, this thesis focuses on the private pole of upper classes, defined as the one having more economic than cultural capital and living in homogeneous spaces of the well-off residential suburbs. It analyses the role of both the neighborhood and the house in the formation and reproduction of this class fraction and thus contributes to the understanding of segregation mechanisms. It is based on a survey conducted in the wealthier districts of two municipalities in the Parisian suburbs (Rueil-Malmaison and Saint-Maur-des-Fossés) where sixty interviews with homeowners were conducted. More than two thirds of the households surveyed have an estimated property of more than one million euros and therefore belong to the 3% of the most affluent households in France. The households surveyed choose a neighborhood marked by its entre-soi, which ensures favorable conditions for social reproduction. They invest locally in social relationships and heritage enterprises, from which they extract resources in terms of social, symbolic and economic capital. In addition, the households surveyed are invested in a privatization movement, which results in a strong taste for real estate ownership and in their withdrawal into the domestic sphere, which mainly affects women, many of whom are housewives. Finally, this privatization is also synonymous with a distance from public services, visible through the management of their security, which is sometimes accompanied by a movement of residential closure

Testo completoNutrient sensing in the portal vein occurs in a strategic location to relay the effects of the diet on food intake and energy metabolism. The portal sensing of glucose produced for instance in response to dietary proteins initiates a nervous signal that ultimately induces satiety and a better control of glucose metabolism. Our physiological and anatomical approaches enable us to propose a sensing model in which two different mechanisms can occur, involving either the intracellular transport and catabolism of glucose or a direct extracellular detection. Portal glycaemia is detected by one pathway or the other depending on its difference with arterial blood glucose, which reflects the nutritional and metabolic state of the subject. A nervous signal is then initiated in periportal neurons, whose axons terminate close to the venous lumen. Our immunohistochemical studies have shown that this signal induces a widespread activation in the brain that relates to the multiple effects of portal glucose appearance, in the brainstem, the sensory and cortico-limbic systems and the hypothalamus. In this latter area, the cellular nature of the activation supports the hypothesized central role of portal glucose appearance in the satiety effect of high-protein diets
Sicard-Dequoy, Sébastien. "Contre le libertarianisme de droite : l’accès aux ressources pour une justice minimale". Thèse, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/1866/9834.
Testo completoThis paper is based on a crucial question of social justice: when does the private property stop to be morally legitimate? This paper will defend a universal right to have access to all the resources needed for the acquisition of a personal autonomy. Therefore, when the private properties of some people prevent others to gain a sufficient access to the resources they need, we have to institute a system of wealth redistribution in order to compensate the prejudice of loosing access to the resources. Furthermore, it is possible to substitute the right to resources by a group of basic opportunities, such as an education system accessible without indebtedness. Since the basic opportunities grant an access to personal autonomy, people do not need to have access to resources anymore. Therefore, private properties are legitimate if and only if there is a system of wealth redistribution ensuring that everyone has an access to the basic opportunities. In this paper, every conclusion concerning the wealth redistribution is bound to minimal justice. In other words, if a society fails to grand access to the basic opportunities, this society is necessarily unjust. To ensure that ours conclusions are bound to minimal justice, we will also demonstrate their consistency with right libertarianism. Although, every conclusion concerning basic opportunities come from the no harm principle and the full self-ownership, the two basis of right libertarianism.

After I took the camera into Caotun, my grandparents’ hometown, I became curies about the tabacco planting, which I felt close but actually unfamiliar with. Though my grandparents were retired tabacco farmers, I knew nothing about it. I started to observe the planting process, research the development context, do oral history of my grandpa, and find the trace of tabacco in Taiwan. Then I Know the falls and downs of the tabacco industry, the rheology of drying room, and the culture of it. At the same time, after the purchase of 2016, Taiwan’s tabacco planting comes to an end. Canceling the monopoly the opening to free market make the almost 100-year-old industry from Japanese colonial period stop. My record is the last image of tabacco planting in Central Taiwan, and the graduate speech of the tabacco farmer. In the process, I get familiar with the tabacco industry and my grandparents as well. Tabacco Riches means the people who earn a lot by planting tabacco. Prince House means the place where for drying in the past. They witnessed the best time of Taiwan tabacco industry. Compared to dying tabacco farmers, and collapsed structures now, and most of all, my grandparents’ weakness, the horror makes me not only know the industry in reason, but observed form a grand-daughter’s eyesight. The essay starts form my childhood memory. I explain the history of Taiwan’ tabacco planting, and then the research methods. In the fourth chapter, the relationship between my grandparents and me. In the fifth and sixth chapters, I present the observation of the last year of tabacco planting, as well as the effect of taking documentary as a way to research. The seventh chapter shows the conclusion. Addenda are records of oral history and shooting plan.
