This paper is a case-based essay on a biotechnology company – Biotecnol – which is undergoing a period of crucial decisions regarding its activity: to maintain its business as it is, meaning it will continue to provide services together with the development of proprietary products; or to decide to focus on only one area giving up on the other. In order to perform this project, I had several meetings at Biotecnol’s headquarters with both the CEO and the CFO. During these encounters we had long conversations where I had the opportunity to discuss and place all the questions and doubts regarding the history of the company in order to fully understand its background and business.

This thesis examines the characteristics of the decision-making process of creditors with respect to either pursuing court reorganization or bankruptcy. It is divided into four chapters, which have been written as stand-alone papers. The second chapter provides a general review of the theoretical and empirical papers on reorganization and bankruptcy. It also describes three case studies to show the complexity of each case in terms of the concentration of claims, disparities of interest among the three classes of creditors and the final decision regarding the approval or rejection of the reorganization plan. The third chapter studies the determinants of delay in corporate reorganizations. It empirically investigates delays in voting on reorganization plans between 2005 and 2014, suggesting that (i) a high concentration of debt among classes of claimholders is related to shorter delays; (ii) a higher number of banks holding claims is related to longer delays; (iii) the average delay decreases considerably when only one class is voting on the plan; (iv) labor and secured creditors demand a delay when the level of collateral is higher; (v) the average delay is longer when the performance of the debtor’s sector is lower and the delay is demanded by secured or unsecured classes; and (vi) a divestment proposal is the main topic discussed by claimholders in cases with longer delays. The fourth chapter presents evidence on the approval of the reorganization plan. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to analyze the likelihood of approval based on reorganization plans for creditors that require approval by employees and secure and unsecure debtholders. We find that (i) the labor class of creditors is likely to approve the reorganization plan even when the plan is rejected, (ii) plans with more heterogeneous payment for classes are less likely to be accepted, (iii) plans are less likely to be accepted when there are more unsecure creditors and (iv) plans with divestment proposals are more likely to be accepted. Finally, as expected given the seniority position of secured debt, plans are less likely to be accepted when the portion of secured debt is higher, and the reverse is true for unsecured debt.
Esta tese tem por objetivo examinar as características do processo de decisão em que credores optam pela recuperação judicial ou liquidação da empresa em dificuldade financeira. O trabalho está dividido em quatro capítulos. No segundo capítulo, apresenta-se, de forma sistematizada, referencial teórico e evidências empíricas para apontar resultados importantes sobre estudos desenvolvidos nas áreas de recuperação de empresas e falência. O capítulo também apresenta três estudos de caso com o propósito de mostrar a complexidade de cada caso no que diz respeito à concentração de recursos, conflito de interesse entre as classes de credores e a decisão final sobre a aprovação ou rejeição do plano de recuperação judicial. No terceiro capítulo, analisam-se os determinantes do atraso pertinente à votação do plano de recuperação judicial. O trabalho propõe um estudo empírico dos atrasos entre 2005 e 2014. Os resultados sugerem que: (i) maior concentração da dívida entre as classes de credores possui relação com atrasos menores; (ii) maior quantidade de bancos para votar o plano de recuperação judicial possui relação com maiores atrasos; (iii) o atraso médio na votação diminui quando apenas uma classe de credores participa da votação do plano; (iv) credores trabalhistas e com garantia real atrasam a votação quando o valor dos ativos para garantir a dívida em caso de liquidação é maior; (v) o atraso médio na votação é maior em casos de pior desempenho do setor de atuação do devedor, sendo solicitado pelas classes quirografária e com garantia real; e (vi) a proposta de venda de ativos é o principal tópico discutido nas reuniões de votação do plano nos casos em que o atraso na votação é maior. Por fim, no quarto capítulo, apresenta-se evidência sobre a votação dos credores e a probabilidade de aprovação do plano de recuperação judicial. Os resultados sugerem que: (i) credores trabalhistas estão propensos a aprovar o plano de recuperação mesmo quando o plano é rejeitado pelas demais classes; (ii) planos com propostas de pagamento mais heterogêneas para as três classes de credores possuem menor chance de serem aceitos; (iii) a chance de aprovação do plano diminui nos casos em que mais credores quirografários participam da recuperação; e (iv) planos com proposta de venda de ativos possuem maior chance de serem aprovados. Finalmente, maior concentração da dívida na classe com garantia real diminui a chance de aprovação do plano, e o contrário ocorre na classe quirografária.

The popularity of peer-to-peer networks has grown tremendously in recent times as a result of the ever-improving capabilities of host entities at the edge and the ubiquitous reach of the Internet. The growth has fueled the realization of many peer-to-peer networks in both academia and the commercial arena. Peer-to-peer networks generally fall into one of these categories ??? centralized systems with server-like entities in the network; unstructured systems with random topology and message routing, and structured systems with deterministic topology and routing behavior. Surveying the major peer-to-peer networks in each category, one can conclude that the each of the categories exhibit very different characteristics and properties from one another. This thesis addresses the problems in the peer-to-peer networking space by employing two overarching principles. Firstly, desirable properties of systems in one category can be adopted by another to achieve restructuring. In short, restructuring involves the injection of structure into unstructured networks and conversely loosening the rigidity in structured systems. Secondly, as much as possible, participating peers in the network are designed to be homogeneous in functionality recognizing that they are heterogeneous in capabilities. True to the concept of the peer-to-peer paradigm, this principle keeps participants functioning as fellow peers rather than imposing hierarchical differences in the roles within the network. We describe three contexts in which the issues pertaining to the peer-to-peer networks in view can be addressed by applying the principle of restructuring. For the Mobile Agent Peer-to-Peer architecture, we adopt centralized concepts into the unstructured peer-to-peer network while maintaining homogeneity in functionality through the use of mobile agents. The architecture shields excessive traffic from peers with limited resources and allows more capable peers to share others??? burden. Through the use of mobile agents, logical hierarchy is avoided and thus the second overarching principle of homogeneity is preserved. For Gnutella Clusters, concepts from the structured systems are adopted to facilitate the formation and maintenance of clustering in unstructured networks. Clustering limits the amount of flooding in the network and thus conserves bandwith. The clustering algorithm is decentralized to all peers, and does not need a set of participants to have special functionality ??? thus preserving the generic nature of all peers. In Autonomic Decentralized Service Directory platform, structure is released from the underlying Chord network to provide better support for service registration and searching. The strict requirements for deterministic routing and lookup which characterize structured systems are granted some leniency for the ability to avoid misbehaving nodes and provide incentives for peers to behave properly.

In the first essay titled "Divestitures and Acquisition Probability", I examine the relationship between a firm's divestiture activities and the likelihood that the firm will become an acquisition target. Using a logit model comparing a sample of target firms matched with a sample of non-target firms from 1986 to 2010, we find that a firm is 27 percent more likely to be acquired within three years of a divestiture activity than if there was no previous divestiture, and the effect is stronger for firms with fewer numbers of segments. Our finding is robust to modifications of control variables, to managerial entrenchment, as well as to alternative diagnoses. Consistent with the literature, we find the market reacts positively to a divestiture announcement. However, cross-sectionally we find the market reaction is positively related to whether or not the divesting firm adopts a golden parachute feature and negatively on the firm's number of segments which is related to the probability of future acquisition. In the second essay titled "The Choice of Divestiture and Long-run Performance: Asset Sell-off versus Equity Carve-out," I examine the post-divestiture long-run performance of two different choices of corporate divestiture, asset sell-offs versus equity carve-outs, and find that the choice of divestiture method has important implications for post-divestiture long-run performance. My findings show that the sell-off parents' long-run abnormal returns are significantly higher than those of the carve-out parents. I also find evidence that the long-term abnormal performance improves with a reduction in the diversification discount. The effect of the diversification discount is weaker for divesting parents with higher levels of R&D. My results further show that a firm's pre-divestiture number of segments and level of asymmetric information are positively related to the probability of an asset sell-off.

The purpose of this baseline study was to determine the effectiveness of a cognitive restructuring program in reducing recidivism of offenders under supervision in a communitybased setting. The study also sought to determine the relationships between three outcomes (no recidivism within one year of release from the community-based supervised setting, violation of Home Detention requirements resulting in incompleteness of court ordered supervision, and recidivism within one year of release from Home Detention) and risk predictor variables including hours of participation in a cognitive restructuring program (Criminal Intervention), gender, race, age, previous criminal history, educational attainment, and history of substance abuse.The population of the study included offenders under sentence of community-based supervision during a two-year period from November, 1992 to October, 1994. One group of 297 offenders participated in the cognitive restructuring intervention program; another group of 346 offenders did not participate. Chi-square analyses based in contingency tables determined statistical significance of the categorical variables, and stepwise discriminant analysis was utilized to create a model that best differentiated between three outcome groups.When using 16 predictor variables, the results of discriminant analyses indicated that outcomes between groups could be differentiated by a function that accounted for 94% of the variability between groups and resulted in no statistically significant residual discriminations. Pearson product-moment correlational analyses indicated only modest correlations between the variables, and chi-square analyses resulted in the rejection of seven out of ten hypotheses concerning outcome and the categorical risk variables.Two important findings relating to the treatment program, Criminal Intervention, were found. Post-release recidivism of offenders was reduced by 7%. However, offenders participating in the treatment program were terminated from supervision due to violations of the conditions for that supervision at an additional rate of 10% over the nonparticipating violators. The review of the literature and research findings confirmed that individual differences were important to successful rehabilitation; therefore, appropriate matching between intervention program and offender risk and need was warranted. Follow up studies, comprehensive offender assessments, and development, utilization, and validation of a comprehensive risk assessment tool was recommended for future research.

Bien penser la structuration de données est primordial pour obtenir de hautes performances, alors que les processeurs actuels perdent un temps considérable à attendre la complétion de transactions mémoires. En particulier les localités spatiales et temporelles de données doivent être optimisées.Cependant, les transformations de structures de données ne sont pas proprement explorées par les compilateurs, en raison de la difficulté que pose l'évaluation de performance des transformations potentielles. De plus,l'optimisation des structures de données est chronophage, sujette à erreur etles transformations à considérer sont trop nombreuses pour être implémentées à la main dans l'optique de trouver une version de code efficace.On propose de guider les programmeurs à travers le processus de restructuration de données grace à un retour utilisateur approfondi, tout d'abord en donnant une description multidimensionnelle de la structure de donnée initiale, faite par une analyse de traces mémoire issues du binaire de l'application de l'utilisateur, dans le but de localiser des problèmes de stride au niveau instruction, indépendemment du langage d'entrée. On choisit de focaliser notre étude sur les transformations de structure de données, traduisibles dans un formalisme proche du C pour favoriser la compréhension de l'utilisateur, que l'on applique et évalue sur deux cas d'étude qui sont des applications réelles,à savoir une simulation d'ondes cardiaques et une simulation de chromodynamique quantique sur réseau, avec différents jeux d'entrées. La prédiction de performance de différentes transformations est conforme à 5% près aux versions réécrites à la main
Careful data layout design is crucial for achieving high performance, as nowadays processors waste a considerable amount of time being stalled by memory transactions, and in particular spacial and temporal locality have to be optimized. However, data layout transformations is an area left largely unexplored by state-of-the-art compilers, due to the difficulty to evaluate the possible performance gains of transformations. Moreover, optimizing data layout is time-consuming, error-prone, and layout transformations are too numerous tobe experimented by hand in hope to discover a high performance version. We propose to guide application programmers through data layout restructuring with an extensive feedback, firstly by providing a comprehensive multidimensional description of the initial layout, built via analysis of memory traces collected from the application binary textit {in fine} aiming at pinpointing problematic strides at the instruction level, independently of theinput language. We choose to focus on layout transformations,translatable to C-formalism to aid user understanding, that we apply and assesson case study composed of two representative multithreaded real-lifeapplications, a cardiac wave simulation and lattice QCD simulation, with different inputs and parameters. The performance prediction of different transformations matches (within 5%) with hand-optimized layout code

This thesis contributes to knowledge about, and understanding of, the implementation of responsible approaches to employment restructuring. The empirical focus is a case study of a UK steel plant (SteelCo) and a restructuring process involving the removal of 1700 jobs across two restructuring programmes from the period 2011-2015. Management described its approach to restructuring as ‘socially responsible restructuring’ (SRR). The central argument of the research is the thesis that the concept of responsible restructuring is more appropriately characterised by a best fit approach that recognises contexts such as the contingencies of local organisational and institutional factors, the particularities of industrial relations, the histories of restructuring and the occupational identity of the workforce. The thesis also presents a conceptual framework that utilises four categories of responsibility based on a synthesis of the prevailing literature that reflects the ways that responsible approaches to restructuring has been researched currently. These categories of responsibility are identified as the regulatory, procedural, communication and employment responsibilities. The research thus explores the rationale, processes, practices, interactions and dynamics of SteelCo’s putative SRR process. The findings identify three contextual variables most pertinent to the implementation of SteelCo’s SRR process. Firstly, the role of trade unions in both supporting affected employees through the restructuring, and the HR team in the design and delivery of the process, suggests that although the unions’ involvement represents an accommodation to management’s decision to restructure, unions can maintain a positive role in the management of change. Secondly, historical, long existing restructuring practices were reframed and repackaged by management through a rhetoric of ‘being responsible’, suggesting that a responsible restructuring strategy offers management a way to legitimise the implementation of an employment restructuring process. Lastly, the findings demonstrate how social, cultural, material and experiential factors associated with the steelworker occupational identity meant that employees had internalised the experience of restructuring. That is, dealing with restructuring and its effects was met with a degree of equanimity by employees, as it had become part of what it meant to work at SteelCo. Following this, the thesis calls for greater attention to be paid to the experiences of a new analytical category of inbetweeners, as employees who fall within the interstices of victim and survivor status.

The decision to restructure a firm is very difficult for many companies because it often has a big impact on the company financially and culturally. Restructuring is often a necessary decision for firms in financial distress, and my research seeks to determine whether the market reacts positively or negatively to restructuring charges over time. Much research has been done to determine whether restructuring creates value for the company and increases future performance, but less has been done to determine the stock market reaction that comes as a result of restructuring. Prior literature suggests that restructuring is often a positive decision for companies, which led to my hypothesis that stock price would increase more in companies that had higher levels of restructuring charges over the period measured. I measured companies’ restructuring charges as a percent of operating income over a ten-year period and compared those percentages to the change in stock price over that same period. My results suggest that companies who did not restructure, or recognized lower levels of restructuring charges, had higher positive increases in stock price than those that had higher levels of restructuring charges. Because this result is contrary to much of the prior research, investors’ reaction to restructuring should continue to be studied.

It is beyond debate that each job lost due to restructuring means a lost taxpayer, and hence lost tax revenue, more poverty and increased crime. South Africa and the world at the large have to deal with this problem head – on in view of the acute need to better the lives of people and encourage investment. Technological advancement should be embraced and used to benefit people and stimulate economies, and that is further challenge in its own right. In Chapter 8 of the White Paper on Transformation of the Public Service dated 15 November 1995 (hereinafter, the White Paper), it is said that: “The Government of National Unity has embarked upon a concerted and comprehensive programme of administrative restructuring and rationalisation (my emphasis) with the object of: (a) Creating a unified and integrated service. (b) Creating a leaner and more cost-effective service.” Various strategies are listed in the White Paper, and the fundamental approach advocated is to right size, adjust remuneration structures, retrench and contract – out services.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Software restructuring is a form of perfective maintenance that modifies the structure of a program's source code. lts goal is increased maintainability to better facilitate other maintenance activities, such as adding new functionality or correcting previously undetected errors. The modification of structure is achieved by applying transformations to the source code of a software system. Software engineers often attempt to restructure software by manually transforming the source code. This approach may lead to undesirable and undetectable changes in its behaviour. Ensuring that manual transformations preserve functionality during restructuring is difficult; guaranteeing it is almost impossible. One solution to the problem of manual restructuring is automation through use of a restructuring tool. The tool becomes responsible to examine each transformation and determine its impact on the software's behaviour. If a transformation preserves functionality, it may be applied to produce new source code. The tool only automates the application of transformations. The decision regarding which transformation to apply in a specific situation still resides with the maintainer. This thesis describes the design and implementation of a restructuring tool for the Oberon language, a successor of Pascal and Modula-2, under the PC Native Oberon operating system. The process of creating an adequate abstraction of a program's structure and its use to apply transformations and generate new source code are investigated. Transformations can be divided into different classes: Scoping, Syntactic, Control flow and Abstraction transformations. The restructuring tool described in this thesis contains implementations from all four classes. Informal arguments regarding the correctness of each transformation are also presented.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die herstrukturering van programmatuur is daarop gemik om die struktuur van 'n program se bronkode te wysig. Hierdie strukturele veranderings dien in die algemeen as voorbereiding vir meer omvangryke onderhoudsaktiwiteite, soos byvoorbeeld die toevoeging van nuwe funksionaliteit of die korrigering van foute wat voorheen verskuil was. Die verandering in struktuur word teweeggebring deur die toepassing van transformasies op die bronkode. Programmatuur-ontwikkelaars voer dikwels sulke transformasies met die hand uit. Sulke optrede kan problematies wees indien 'n transformasie die funksionaliteit, in terme van programgedrag, van die programmatuur beïnvloed. Dit is moeilik om te verseker dat bogenoemde metode funksionaliteit sal behou; om dit te waarborg is so te sê onmoontlik. 'n Oplossing vir bogenoemde probleem is die outomatisering van die herstruktureringsproses deur die gebruik van gespesialiseerde programmatuur. ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Restructuring is a fact of modem day life and has a huge impact on the employees of organisations who follow such strategies. It is critical that the change process as well as the surviving employees are managed effectively to ensure a committed and productive workforce. The purpose of the research study was the measure employee perception on the change process and the current environment in the organisation. Background to the organisation was provided to give perspective to the reader. Led by literature a unique questionnaire using a five-point scale was developed to measure employee perception in terms of the change process and current conditions in the organisation. The final questionnaire consisted of 59 items and was analysed according to different aspects of the change process and working environment identified. The arithmetic mean and standard deviation were determined for questions, the aspect identified as well as different demographic groups. The results showed that employees have a positive perception on the need for change, have confidence in the abilities of top management and are positive about the organisation's future prosperity. Employees are divided on the subject of loyalty towards the organisation. Results further show that employees have a negative perception on how the organisation managed the change process and the surviving employees, feel negative about their current working environment, have a negative attitude and commitment towards the organisation, feel insecure about their jobs and do not believe that the organisation is assisting them in their career development. It was lastly found that the majority of employees have not developed an internal drive to take responsibility for their won career development. Conclusions were made based on the results, focus areas were identified and recommendations were made on possible interventions to address the problems identified.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Herstrukturering is deel van die hedendaagse lewe en het 'n massiewe invloed op die lewens van werknemers wat vir organisasies werk wat die besiheidsstrategie volg. Dit is krities dat die veranderingsproses en die oorblywende werknemers effektief bestuur word om 'n toegewyde en produktiewe werksmag te verseker. Die doel van die studie was om werknemer persepsie te meet ten opsigte van die herstrukturerings proses sowel as die huidige omstandighede in die organisasie. Agtergrond tot die organisasie was verskaf om perspektief by die leser te wek. Gegewe die literatuur, is 'n unieke vraelys met 'n vyf-punt skaal opgestel om werknemerpersepsie te meet in terme van die herstruktureringsproses en die huidige omstandighede in die organisasie. Die finale vraelys van 59 vrae is geanaliseer volgens verskillende aspekte van die herstruktureringsproses en werksomstandighede wat geïndetifiseer is. Die wiskundige gemiddeld en standaard afwyking van vrae en aspekte is bepaal sowel as vir verskillende demografiese groepe. Die resultate toon dat werknemers positief is oor die behoefte vir verandering, vertroue in topbestuur het en positief is oor die organisasie se finansiele vooruitsigte in die toekoms. Werknemers is verdeeld op die onderwerp van lojaliteit teenoor die organisasie. Resultate wys verder dat werknemers 'n negatiewe persepsie het oor die wyse waarop die organisasie die hersrtruktureringsproses en oorblywende werknemers bestuur is, voel negatief oor hulle werksomstandighede, het 'n negatiewe houding teenoor die organisasie, voel onseker oor hulle werk en glo nie die organisasie ondersteun werknemers in hulle loopbaanbeplanning nie. Dit is laastens bevind dat die meerderheid van werknemers nog nie 'n interne dryf ontwikkel het om verantwoordelikheid te neem vir hulle eie loopbaan ontwikkeling nie. Gevolgtrekkings was gebaseer op die resultate behaal, fokus areas is geïdentifiseer en aanbevelings is gemaak op moontlike stappe om die geïdentifiseerde probleme op te los.

In the following study, I have investigated aberrant integration events of the maize Activator/Dissociation ( Ac/Ds) family of transposable elements (TEs) in Arabidopsis. The purpose of the study was twofold: (i) to identify sequence modifications associated with aberrant transposition that are informative regarding the mechanism of Ac/Ds transposition; and (ii) to extend our understanding of the mechanisms by which class II TEs can influence genome structure. This work focuses on a large inversion identified on chromosome II. A lone Ds element comprises one breakpoint of the inversion and the second breakpoint is composed solely of Arabidopsis sequences. The analysis of the sequence modifications present at both breakpoints indicates that the event was precipitated by the abortive transposition of Ds. This is the first event of its kind identified for an Ac/Ds and the event defines a novel mechanism by which these TEs can induce change within a genome. Further, the presence of deletions at both termini of the implicated Ds suggests that the transposition of Ac/Ds involves fully excised intermediates. To obtain further support for this model, a population of Arabidopsis individuals harboring Ds excision events was screened for reintegrated elements. Several integrations were analyzed at the sequence level and compared to wild-type integration sites. While no genome rearrangements were detected, a number of integrations display small deletions within both the Ds termini and the DNA flanking the elements. These results are consistent with the presence of fully excised Ac/Ds intermediates. Further, the results suggest that dissolution of the transposase active complex at different points in the transposition process will result in the formation of distinct aberrant transposition products. Modem computing systems are moving towards a Software as a Service (SaaS) paradigm, which can be characterized as a separation of the possession and ownership of software from its use. Whilst this separation has its benefits, the downside of this arrangement is a loss of control over the service software from the consumer's perspective compared to locally running software. A research challenge to address, therefore, is resolve the conflict between a service provider that needs to evolve its interface to accommodate new requirements and the assumption from a set of service consumers who either assume that the service interface will remain unchanged or is unable to adapt due to constraints such as development agility. The research in this thesis presents the development of a scheme (RES-WS) to enable Web Service providers to be able to evolve their service interface in a non-backwards compatible way but still maintain compatibility with existing consumers. The need for a non-passive approach to evolving services while still remaining backwards compatibility is highlighted and presented based on a clear need identified within the literature. This work for the first time presents an analysis of applying existing oap refactoring theory to the Web Services domain. The scheme aims to formalise the set of applicable oap influenced refactorings in addition to the extended set specific to the Web Services domain. Based on graph rewriting theory, the set of refactorings has been formally represented as refactoring transformations through rewriting rules and enables a set of preconditions to be defined for each transformation. A demonstrator has been developed to implement the RES-WS message mediator which interprets the chain of primitive refactoring transformations required to carry out a particular complex transformation. Experimentation was then performed to show the feasibility and effectiveness of the message mediator for an upgrade~ Web Service against the overall response time for the service.

A globalização dos mercados, em meados da década de 90, levou muitas empresas a uma ampla e profunda reestruturação organizacional e produtiva, que deu origem à adoção de estratégias de focalização e descentralização produtiva, que pôde, em muitos casos, ser traduzida em vantagens competitivas para essas empresas. Na tentativa de se tornarem novamente adequadas, frente às novas tendências emergentes, as empresas passaram por um fenômeno chamado de Reestruturação Industrial, e que se caracteriza como o tema central deste estudo. Na contextualização, observa-se de forma distinta a existência de dois grandes marcos no estudo da trajetória das organizações, a verticalização, da era Fordista, e posteriormente a desverticalização com o conseqüente surgimento das novas tendências, tais como o outsourcing, as redes de cooperação, as joint-ventures, as privatizações, e outras mais que se encontram separadas em três grandes eixos de estudo e abordados mais detalhadamente ao longo do trabalho. Pelo fato do tema ser bastante atual e possuir uma diversidade de interpretações e ainda por estar sendo utilizado pelas empresas de forma caótica e até mesmo equivocada, é que o objetivo mais geral desse trabalho se concentra em mapear esse fenômeno chamado Reestruturação Industrial, no tocante às suas dimensões e amplitudes. Contudo, o foco central do trabalho destina-se a verificação da relação entre o conceito de Reestruturação Industrial da literatura e o encontrado nas empresas, por meio de um estudo empírico que visa responder alguns questionamentos nos quais o trabalho está orientado. O estudo empírico realizado sob a forma de entrevistas, foi um instrumento fundamental na busca pelo entendimento dos conceitos da literatura e na compreensão da história de cada empresa visitada, no que se refere ao surgimento e à adoção das novas tendências abordadas neste estudo e identificadas na prática.
The market globalization that took place throughout the nineties led many companies to carry out an extensive review of their productive and organizational structure which cause the adoption of strategies such as focalization and productive decentralization that, in many cases, could be associated with competitive advantages for such companies. Trying to become adjusted to a new market and deal with the new emergent trends, the corporations crossed over a phenomenon called Industrial Restructuring which is the central theme of this dissertation. Concerning the study of the organizations trajectory, it can be observed two major marks; the verticalization during the Fordism Era, and afterwards the appearing of new trends such as outsourcing, cooperation networks, joint-ventures, privatizations and others. In this work, the new trends were grouped in three main axis of analysis and are discussed in detail. Due to the fact that the subject is pretty new, has a lot of interpretations and is still being used by the companies in a chaotic and, some times, incorrect way, the most general objective for this work is concentrated in mapping the Industrial Restructuring phenomenon taking into account its dimensions and amplitudes. However, the central focus of this study is related to check the relations between the concepts as found in the literature and the Industrial Restructuring phenomenon as utilized by the organizations. To support this objective an empiric analysis was carried out in four large companies. The empiric analysis which was based on a series of interviews was a fundamental tool to the understanding of the literature concepts as well as for the knowledge of each company considering the arising and adoption of new trends discussed in this study and identified in practice.

Large data sets are required to store all of the information contained in option chains. The data set we work with includes all U.S. exchange traded put and call options. This data set is part of a larger data set commonly referred to as the National Best Bid Offer (NBBO) data set. The national bid best offer is a Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) term for the best available ask price and bid price. Brokers must guarantee investors these prices on their trades. We have acquired data for the 5 year period from 2005 to 2009 for all U.S. traded options. Each year of data is approximately 6 gigabytes. The company, (DeltaNeutral - Options Data And End Of Day Downloads, 2010), from which we acquired the data, also has a software package, OptimalTrader, to process the data. For this data to be used in research projects, the data must be accessible by specific underlying security for selected date ranges. This type of data is more useful to the financial mathematics student than the output given by the software provided by DeltaNeutral. The software used in this data manipulation is Matlab. Each individual file of original data was parsed, and new files were written with some reformatting in which the original data was largely reorganized. The new organization will make searching for information from one stock or any specific group of stocks easier to achieve. We have created 3 m-files in Matlab which deal with reformatting the data, error handling, and searching through the original or reformatted data. The result is that new datasets can be created for further studying and manipulation. Future students working with this data should find this method, toolset, and the newly constructed datasets to be useful tools in working with options data and examining option chains.

In recent decades, the prevalence of physical activity has declined considerably in many high-income countries, and this has been linked to rising levels of obesity and several weight-related medical conditions such as coronary heart disease, diabetes and cancer. There is some evidence that areas experiencing the lowest levels of physical activity tend to be those which have undergone a particularly strong transition away from employment in physically demanding occupations. It is proposed that such processes of industrial restructuring may be causally linked to unexplained geographical variations in activity patterns. Although the socio-cultural correlates of activity behaviours have been well studied, none have explicitly attempted to identify components of industrial change that may impact physical activity. This thesis addresses the gap in knowledge surrounding the socio-cultural context of industrial restructuring by investigating where, how and why dimensions of industrial change may impact current levels of physical activity in England. The research applies a mixed methods approach using GIS techniques, multilevel modelling and qualitative research interviewing. Firstly, the current literature on socio-cultural correlates of health behaviours is reviewed to present a novel conceptual framework that hypothesises how processes between physical activity and industrial restructuring may be linked in context. Subsequently, measures of industrial restructuring as well as physical activity are developed to analyse spatial variations in activity patterns across England. The analyses focus on how employment decline in physically demanding occupations may affect current levels of physical activity across different activity domains and relevant macroeconomic time periods. Finally, this research aims to get an insight in the mechanisms underlying the relationship between physical activity and industrial restructuring. Results from this research showed geographical variations with distinctive urban-rural disparities in levels of predominantly recreational physical activity across England. Processes of industrial restructuring appeared to be associated with patterns of physical activity, although the nature of the association differed across areas, time periods and employment types. The results also highlighted the plausible impact of inherited cultures and regional identities on health-related behaviours. Socio-cultural factors relevant in the context of industrial restructuring are likely to provide valuable context in activityrelated research.
