Abstract (sommario):
Indonesia’s tropical peatlands are one of the world’s largest carbon sinks, and they are facing the threat of extensive degradation and conversion. The Indonesian government is committed to peat restoration. However, restoration is still a costly, top-down approach lacking community participation, and is focused on the 3R scheme (rewetting, revegetation, and revitalization). Peatland restoration businesses are part of the innovative effort to finance this endeavor. Unfortunately, there is not much information available about the pre-conditions required to create a restoration business. This study seeks to understand the enabling conditions for the development of peatland restoration, with a focus on the tamanu oil business, and to assess whether the same situation might apply in the context of the restoration of degraded peatland. PEST analysis is used to describe the macro-environmental factors of the tamanu oil business and its development opportunities in degraded peatlands. Tamanu oil-based peat ecosystem restoration businesses offer good prospects because of the growing it has grown the bioenergy and biomedical markets, and they can cover a larger area of degraded peatland landscape. For tamanu oil businesses to succeed in peat ecosystem restoration, we recommend that policy documents at various levels include tamanu as a priority commodity for peatland restoration and alternative community businesses, followed by planting programs by all stakeholders. The government and social organizations must take positions as initiators and catalysts, establish a significant number and extent of pilot tamanu plantations, and create a mutually supportive business climate between entrepreneurs and peatland managers.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper proposes a method to evaluate functionality of a business after a tsunami disaster. This method has several modules such as damage estimation of business base (building, equipments, and lifeline) caused by tsunami hazard, restoration ratio-to-time model for business base, and the functionality of the business introduced by facility restoration and its influence to the business. As a case study, the tsunami impact to industries and its subsequent restoration process were studied based on an interview survey in southern Sri Lanka after the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami, and the survey results were applied to the proposed model. Results of application showed that buildings and equipments were slowly restored when they were extensively damaged or flooded. Further, the business restoration depends more heavily on the business facilities restoration than the lifeline restoration, when the business facilities are flooded with tsunami inundation higher than 1 m.

Abstract (sommario):
The Crimea annexation and the military aggression of the Russian Federation, which first began in some territories of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions in 2014 and escalated into a full-scale war on February 24, 2022, resulted in heavy losses of life and a humanitarian crisis, exacerbating economic, political and social instability. To restore Ukraine’s economy, all businesses, including hospitality (hotel and restaurant business) sector, should continue functioning, though it is a challenging but crucial task. The paper aims to analyze the state of the hospitality market in the current war conditions in Ukraine and assess the possibilities of its restoration and development. An online survey was conducted among 282 representatives of the hospitality business in Kyiv, Sumy, Chernihiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Kharkiv, Poltava, Ivano-Frankivsk, Lviv, Ternopil, and Zakarpattia regions. Based on the results, in 2022, almost 23% of hospitality industry representatives suspended their activities, and 54% functioned only partially. Many surveyed hotels and restaurants (36%) have gradually changed and adapted their business strategies. For more than half of the hospitality representatives, expenses increased by 20-50%, and profits dropped by more than 20%. The critical consequences of the full-scale war for the Ukrainian hospitality market are as follows: disruption of supply chains, reduction in consumers’ purchasing power, changes in consumer demand, shortage of certain types of products, shortage of personnel, and business unprofitability.

Abstract (sommario):
The Tropics continue to provide the most biologically diverse and carbon rich forest in the world, but they are being lost at alarming rates. To meet the global climate change targets and the UN sustainable development goals, financing is urgently needed to speed up and increase tropical forest restoration. The aim of this thesis is to show that sustainable timber and non-timber forest products offer are a viable vehicle for investment in tropical forest restoration and to identify the needed incentives and tools to enable sustainable investment.   There is a lack of research on the integration between business model design and sustainability generally and an absence of business models for tropical forest restoration. Very little research if any, has been undertaken to link the two and evaluate the feasibility of applying business models on tropical forest restoration, especially with regard to its potential as an interesting investment option. This thesis gives a background about tropical forest restorations, sustainable investment, presents three tropical reforestation projects and a conceptual framework. The conceptual framework will be used to evaluate the potential for business model application to finance restoration and enable sustainable investments.   Using a business model for tropical forest restoration projects, which in most cases are not defined as businesses, is an innovative approach and an agent of needed radical change. A business model is a crucial strategic management tool to enable success of tropical forest restorations. The core logic of the business model can offer equitable customer value and the fulfillment of new types of needs. Merging economic development and forest restoration is a powerful tool for innovation. The critical variables for financing are management, monitoring, operational efficiency, political incentives and regulations, stakeholder involvement, community benefits, transparency and information communication technology.

Abstract (sommario):
As a case study in cultural production and consumption and of the commodification of culture in late seventeenth- and eighteenth-century England, this study examines how musicians in London began to emerge from their dependence on the patronage of court, aristocracy and church into a more public sphere, moving from positions as salaried employees to a more freelance existence where they contributed to their income by putting on public commercial concerts. Taking as its starting point the almost 50,000 references to music recorded in the Register of Music in London Newspapers 1660–1750, a database has been built to record detailed information extracted from over 12,000 advertisements, puffs and news items related to commercial concert giving in London between 1660 and 1750. Concert advertisements and other material may thus be studied longitudinally in relation to each other, providing a valuable source of data for the growth of concert giving in London over a long and important period of its development. Public commercial concerts emerged in London in the period following the restoration of Charles II in 1660, developing from private music meetings dominated by amateur performers and informal public performances by professionals in taverns via John Banister's first advertised concerts in 1672. By 1750, public commercial concerts in London may not have achieved their final form or the heights of popularity that accompanied the ‘rage for music' of the 1790s, but they were promoted regularly and with a clear sense of programme planning, laying the foundations for later expansion. The possibility for musicians to make a living as freelance professionals without having to rely solely on patronage, their development of commercial skills, their emerging links with music publishers, all this is witness to the birth of music as a business in London in the period between 1660 and 1750.

Abstract (sommario):
Contudo é importante garantir a sustentabilidade, surgindo desta forma, outra preocupação: A rendibilidade.
The main objective of this work consist in the elaboration of a business plan for the restructuring of an existing gastronomic space in the hypermarket. This plan is intended to respond not only to the needs and concerns of the customers, but also to optimize the management of the business and its sustainability. The central and motivating concern of this project is in fact the importance that the client has in the success of the business. The satisfaction of their needs allows the loyalty of the customers and consequently gain and maintenance of the market share. However, it is important to ensure the sustainability of the business, resulting in another concern: Profitability. The existence of food waste in this sector has an impact on results and performance of the business. Therefore, it is important to create a solution that adds value to the customer and recognize of it, but based on sustainable management. In order to prepare this business plan, it was necessary to analyze, in a first phase, the external and internal environment of the company, as well as the sector where it is inserted, in order to formulate strategies and defined requirements for the implementation of this new business. In this way the new business area intends to offer the customer a gastronomic solution based on healthy foods, rich in proteins, with fresh and quality products, made at the moment and for consumption in the place. These fresh products come from the perishable sections of the hypermarket in order to reduce the waste that occurs in these areas. In this way, a better and healthier offer is made to the customer, optimizing the existing resources in the hypermarket, contributing to increase the profitability and sustainability of the business. Due to the complexity of analyzing the company as a whole, this business plan was designed only for one of the hypermarkets of the organization concerned, but is intended to be transversal to all stores. After the conclusion of the plan and the economic analysis, it was concluded that the project is viable and has an impact on reducing food waste.

Abstract (sommario):
This study examined the significant impact of culture on global public relations practices using a case study analysis of Dove, H&M, and Nivea’s media campaigns between 2017 and 2019. The analysis was carried out through a structural comparison between the public’s reaction from the United States and Nigeria. Cultural variations between the two countries were examined, and how the variations impact GPR practices were explored. Social judgment theory, apologia, and image restoration theory were used as the theoretical frameworks alongside Hofstede’s cultural dimensions. This study demonstrates that understanding cultural dimensions as it applies to diverse countries operating in the global market can reveal how organizations can design and implement effective public relations practices across borders regardless of the existing cultural differences, which pose as a challenge.

Sievert, Sheree L. "Preserving bodies, preserving buildings : funeral homes in east-central Indiana". Virtual Press, 1999. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/1133728.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Traditionally, funeral homes have been family-owned small businesses which pride themselves on their personal, caring service. Many are located in historic houses worthy of preservation. In the past few decades, however, many family-owned funeral homes have been bought out by large, national corporations in search of big profits. The future of oldhouse funeral homes is uncertain. An inventory of funeral homes was conducted in a ninecounty area of east-central Indiana, including Blackford, Delaware, Grant, Hancock, Henry, Jay, Madison, Randolph, and Wayne Counties. Findings show that a majority (59%) of the funeral homes in the nine-county area of east-central Indiana inventoried are located in former residences built before 1950, with varying degree of modification. While some have had minimal or moderate alterations, a large percentage (54%) of these have been extensively altered over the years. Case studies of four pre-1950 funeral homes in the inventory area revealed that alterations, many of which reflect the needs of the funeral business, have affected not only their integrity but also their ratings in the Indiana Historic Sites and Structures Inventory. Recommendations include greater communication between the funeral industry and preservationists, and the establishment of guidelines for sensitive additions that are addressed specifically to the needs of the funeral industry.

Abstract (sommario):
This is a study on how to retain distribution functions at the port in the large-scale industrial disaster prevention scheme at the time of great earthquakes. Urgent need for such efforts has been mounting in recent years. Industrial disaster prevention scheme is, in other words, Business Continuity Management (BCM), which enables continuity of important businesses while trying to make an early recovery of overall business activities at the time of great earthquakes. When an earthquake occurs, it is important to quickly resume businesses after an initial period of confusion. For this purpose, it is necessary to make a large-scale restoration plan, including the restoration of social infrastructure. In the Chubu Metropolitan Area in Japan where the city of Nagoya is the center, the global division of labor has been rapidly in progress. The businesses are developing more and more within the framework of closely and finely-knit global supply-chains between domestic and overseas enterprises. It is one of the areas where Business Continuity Management is in urgent need. The subject of the case study in this paper is all international distribution activities at the Port of Nagoya in the Chubu Metropolitan area where Tokai, Tou-Nankai or Nankai Earthquakes is anticipated in the near future. The concept of the Business Continuity Management shall be developed through research on the current measures taken by the enterprises and organizations who are the port-users. Then the goals and problems regarding the recovery of port functions will be identified. Furthermore, we will attempt to propose technological means to solve the problems and achieve the goals. This paper starts with the analysis of the questionnaires to about 30 member companies and organizations of Industry Disaster Management Panel. The next section consists of two parts; the first half is devoted to the function recovery planning on the shore, and the second half discusses the function restoration of the section on the sea within the port. We believe this study will provide valuable guidelines for the port function recovery in the Chubu area at the time of earthquakes. It will also serve as effective guiding philosophy for many ports in Japan and around the world which face similar problems.

Abstract (sommario):
On September 11, 2001, the terrorist attacks that destroyed the World Trade Center (WTC) in Lower Manhattan, New York City, also damaged the Port Authority Trans-Hudson Corp.’s (PATH’s) busiest terminal serving the heart of the thriving downtown financial, commercial, and residential district. The aftermath of the attacks also forced the closure of PATH’s key station at Exchange Place that serves Jersey City, New Jersey’s expanding “Gold Coast” business and residential area. PATH’s more than 260,000 average weekday commuters between New Jersey and New York were affected in some way by these tragic events, and PATH ridership fell sharply during the following months. Among the PATH facilities that were damaged or destroyed at WTC, and in the two Hudson River tubes, and at Exchange Place Station were all of the electrical, power, signal, and communications systems. Recovery and restoration work began immediately, but was hampered by the extensive rescue, recovery, removal, and demolition work at the World Trade site. Broken water lines and fire fighting efforts flooded both river tubes, which were later sealed at Exchange Place to prevent additional potential damage to PATH’s New Jersey facilities. This paper describes PATH’s recovery program to replace the electrical, power, signal, and communications facilities from Exchange Place to the WTC Terminal. A temporary WTC terminal has been built to restore direct service to Lower Manhattan’s financial, business, and residential center as of November 23, 2003. As part of this program, new trackwork was installed to enhance operational flexibility and provide temporary interim service to Exchange Place Station, which reopened June 29, 2003. Capacity expansion provisions were included to allow for future 10-car train operations when a new rail car fleet is procured. Facilities replaced include a new traction power and auxiliary services substation, new cables, ductbanks, new signals and central control system, wayside phones, emergency power removal switches, tunnel lighting, radio antenna, and fiber optics. An accelerated design and construction schedule was followed, using a broad combination of in-house, consulting, and contractor forces.

Abstract (sommario):
Restoration of independence of Lithuania in 1990 led to highly successful transition from centrally planned economy to market economy within only two decades. New challenges for domestic companies came up, to be a part of internationalization and globalization. It became necessary to develop strategies for national companies to enter international markets and to make the optimal choice of entry mode. The main emphasis is put on the choice between traditional modes of market entry as casual export and new possible entry modes. Typical factors as emigration, intercultural differences etc. are analysed to show how to use domestic market weaknesses to create strengths for entry strategies.

Abstract (sommario):
This report critically examines, for the first time, the capacity of Canada’s water sector with respect to meeting and helping other countries meet the water-related targets of the UN’s global sustainable development agenda. Several components of this capacity are examined, including water education and research, investment in water projects that Canada makes internally and externally, and experiences in water technology and governance. Analysis of the water education system suggests that there is a broad capability in institutions of higher learning in Canada to offer training in the diverse subject areas important in water. In most cases, however, this has not led to the establishment of specific water study programmes. Only a few universities provide integrated water education. There is a need for a comprehensive listing of water-related educational activities in universities and colleges — a useful resource for potential students and employers. A review of recent Canadian water research directions and highlights reveals strong and diverse water research capacity and placed the country among global leaders in this field. Canada appears to be within the top 10 countries in terms of water research productivity (publications) and research impact (citations). Research capacity has been traditionally strong in the restoration and protection of the lakes, prediction of changes in climate, water and cryosphere (areas where water is in solid forms such as ice and snow), prediction and management of floods and droughts. There is also a range of other strong water research directions. Canada is not among the top 10 global water aid donors in absolute dollar numbers; the forerunners are, as a rule, the countries with higher GDP per capita. Canadian investments in Africa water development were consistently higher over the years than investments in other regions of the global South. The contributions dropped significantly in recent years overall, also with a decline in aid flow to Africa. Given government support for the right business model and access to resources, there is significant capacity within the Canadian water sector to deliver water technology projects with effective sustainable outcomes for the developing world. The report recommends several potential avenues to elevate Canada’s role on the global water stage, i.e. innovative, diverse and specific approaches such as developing a national inventory of available water professional capacity, and ranking Universities on the strength of their water programmes coordinating national contributions to global sustainability processes around the largest ever university-led water research programme in the world – the 7-year Global Water Futures program targeting specific developmental or regional challenges through overseas development aid to achieve quick wins that may require only modest investments resolving such chronic internal water challenges as water supply and sanitation of First Nations, and illustrating how this can be achieved within a limited period with good will strengthening and expanding links with UN-Water and other UN organisations involved in global water policy work To improve water management at home, and to promote water Canadian competence abroad, the diverse efforts of the country’s water sector need better coordination. There is a significant role for government at all levels, but especially federally, in this process.

Abstract (sommario):
The Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) market is experiencing rapid development, with different regions adopting distinct approaches. In Europe, the progress is primarily driven top-down through the implementation of regulations aimed at integrating CDR into various climate instrument pillars within the EU. In contrast, the United States is witnessing a bottom-up growth trajectory, characterized by the emergence of start-ups, carbon registries, marketplaces, and insurance companies, all playing a role in the expansion of the CDR sector. This surge in CDR-related businesses has been further catalyzed by substantial subsidies, particularly through the recent adjustments made to the 45Q tax credit system. The amendments were introduced as part of the "Inflation Reduction Act" (IRA) and the "Bipartisan Infrastructure Law" (BIL). Under these modifications, significant tax credits are offered for carbon capture and utilization at point sources, with subsequent storage (CCS). Notably, the tax credits have increased to 60 USD/tCO2 for carbon capture and utilization and storage at point sources, and to 85 USD/tCO2 for direct air capture and storage. The tax credits go even higher, amounting to 130 and 180 USD/tCO2, respectively, for utilization and storage if the carbon is directly removed from the air. In addition to these measures, the IRA and BIL also allocate substantial funding for forestry and sequestration projects, carbon transport infrastructure, and carbon removal hubs to test and develop technologies. Simultaneously, some top-down initiatives have been set in motion in the US, exemplified by the introduction of the Carbon Dioxide Removal Market Development Act as part of California's Cap-and-Trade Program. This act mandates emitting entities to offset a certain percentage of their emissions through CDR in subsequent years, culminating in full compensation of emissions with CDR by 2045. Moreover, the act emphasizes the promotion of domestic development by requiring that at least 50% of the negative emissions credits used by an emitting entity originate from CDR processes that directly mitigate climate impacts within the state. Against this backdrop, it comes as no surprise that the CDR start-up scene is predominantly dominated by US companies, with ocean-based removal companies accounting for approximately 10 percent of the market. However, despite their presence, ocean-based CDR projects are currently limited, with the majority focused on blue carbon projects, particularly mangrove restoration, and only a few exploring other ocean-based CDR methods. The land-based portion of the CDR market appears to be effectively addressing accounting, verification, and registry aspects, primarily due to market demand or existing regulations. Nevertheless, the development of such bottom-up approaches remains less likely for open access schemes like ocean-based CDR initiatives.

Abstract (sommario):
Climate change is one of the greatest challenges facing humanity affecting our ability to deliver energy, transport, logistics, water, sanitation, and communications services. Investment for climate-resilient infrastructure is at the core of the IDB Groups agenda. In particular, nature-based Solutions (NbS) are a cost-effective way to build infrastructure resilient to climate change while delivering societal benefits. As many LAC governments and businesses are unaware of the opportunities and cost-efficiencies of NbS, setting out the business case for these solutions is an important first step to build support and secure funding. This Market Assessment examines how NbS can contribute to climate-resilient infrastructure through the protection, management, and restoration of natural capital. It examines existing barriers and the opportunities to increase private sector use of NbS focusing on the role of policy in NbS uptake; awareness, governance, and capacity; technical tools and skills to deliver NbS; and finance and funding. It provides recommendations for infrastructure project developers and operators, financial institutions, and policymakers to create a more enabling environment for NbS in LAC.
