Testo completoFalse information are multiplying and are spreading quickly on social networks. In this thesis, we analyze the publications from a multimodal point of view between the text and the associated image. Several studies were conducted during this thesis. The first compares several types of media present on social networks and aims to discriminate them automatically. The second one allows the detection and the localization of modifications in an image thanks to the comparison with an old version of this image. Finally, we focused on merged knowledge based on the predictions of other research teams to create a single system

Testo completoThis research investigates boys' masculine appearance-work on image-based social media through a collaborative project involving twenty-six participants aged fifteen to twenty. Feminist ethnography and institutional socio-clinic form the two methodological approaches of this study. Using a (net)ethnographic method involving online immersion and in-depth individual and group interviews conducted in person or remotely, the research examines practices ranging from capturing to editing and sharing self-images. The research design incorporates the use of gatekeepers, photo elicitation, and the sharing of self-narratives. Participants revealed differences in their approach to appearance-work based on the social media platform, the affordances of each, and the recipients identified. The image grammar described by the participants on Snapchat and Instagram, the two image-based social media they use most, is interwoven with the technical skills they demonstrate in producing and interpreting images. Snapchat is perceived as a social camera that fosters the capturing of instant, humorous, and ephemeral images, primarily shared with strong ties. Instagram is described as a showcase for aesthetic self-images, shared in various formats with a broader circle of sociability, primarily composed of weak ties. Boys tend to adopt a spectator posture toward the images they share, particularly those of girls, who, in their view, reproduce aesthetic expectations in the way they present their bodies. The rapid institutionalisation of image-based social media appears to reinforce established forms of domination, particularly regarding gender and sexuality
Bost, Xavier. "A storytelling machine ? : automatic video summarization : the case of TV series". Thesis, Avignon, 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016AVIG0216/document.
Testo completoThese past ten years, TV series became increasingly popular. In contrast to classicalTV series consisting of narratively self-sufficient episodes, modern TV seriesdevelop continuous plots over dozens of successive episodes. However, thenarrative continuity of modern TV series directly conflicts with the usual viewing conditions:due to modern viewing technologies, the new seasons of TV series are beingwatched over short periods of time. As a result, viewers are largely disengaged fromthe plot, both cognitively and emotionally, when about to watch new seasons. Sucha situation provides video summarization with remarkably realistic use-case scenarios, that we detail in Chapter 1. Furthermore, automatic movie summarization, longrestricted to trailer generation based on low-level features, finds with TV series a unprecedentedopportunity to address in well-defined conditions the so-called semanticgap: summarization of narrative media requires content-oriented approaches capableto bridge the gap between low-level features and human understanding. We review inChapter 2 the two main approaches adopted so far to address automatic movie summarization.Chapter 3 is dedicated to the various subtasks needed to build the intermediaryrepresentations on which our summarization framework relies: Section 3.2focuses on video segmentation, whereas the rest of Chapter 3 is dedicated to the extractionof different mid-level features, either saliency-oriented (shot size, backgroundmusic), or content-related (speakers). In Chapter 4, we make use of social network analysisas a possible way to model the plot of modern TV series: the narrative dynamicscan be properly captured by the evolution over time of the social network of interactingcharacters. Nonetheless, we have to address here the sequential nature of thenarrative when taking instantaneous views of the state of the relationships between thecharacters. We show that standard time-windowing approaches can not properly handlethis case, and we detail our own method for extracting dynamic social networksfrom narrative media. Chapter 5 is dedicated to the final generation and evaluation ofcharacter-oriented summaries, both able to reflect the plot dynamics and to emotionallyre-engage viewers into the narrative. We evaluate our framework by performing alarge-scale user study in realistic conditions

Testo completoPretopology is a mathematical theory whose goal is to relax the set of axioms governing the well known topology theory. Weakening the set of axioms mainly consists in redefining the pseudo-closure operator which is idempotent in topology. The non-idempotence of the pretopological pseudo-closure operator offers an appropriate framework for the modeling of various phenomena, such as iterative processes evolving throughout time. Pretopology is the outcome of the generalisation of several concepts, amongst topology but also graph theory. This thesis is divided in four main parts. The first one is an introduction to the theoretical framework of the pretopology, as well as an overview of several applications in domains where the pretopology theory shines, such as machine learning, image processing or complex systems analysis. The second part will settle the logical modeling of pretopological spaces which allows to define pretopological spaces by a logical and multi-criteria combination. This modeling enables learning algorithms to define pretopological spaces by learning a logical formula. This part will also present an unrestricted pretopological spaces learning algorithm. Unrestricted pretopological spaces can be quite hard to manipulate, especially when the studied population has some structural properties that can be described in a more restricted space. This is why the third part is dedicated to the automatic learning of pretopological spaces of type V. These spaces are defined by a set of prefilters which impose a particular structure. The LPSMI algorithm, which is the main contribution of this work, is presented in this part. This algorithm relies on the multi-instance learning principles to accurately capture the structural properties of pretopological spaces of type V. Finally, the last part consists of multiple applications of the theoretical framework presented in this thesis. Applications to lexical taxonomies extraction, community detection and extraction of temporal relations, as part of a NLP process, will be presented in order to show the usefulness, the relevance and the flexibility of pretopological spaces learning

Testo completoOver the past decade, data providers have been generating and streaming a large amount of data, including images, videos, audio, etc. In this thesis, we will be focusing on processing images since they are the most commonly shared between the users on the global inter-network. In particular, treating images containing faces has received great attention due to its numerous applications, such as entertainment and social media apps. However, several challenges could arise during the processing and transmission phase: firstly, the enormous number of images shared and produced at a rapid pace requires a significant amount of time to be processed and delivered; secondly, images are subject to a wide range of distortions during the processing, transmission, or combination of many factors that could damage the images’content. Two main contributions are developed. First, we introduce a Full-Reference Image Quality Assessment Framework in Real-Time, capable of:1) preserving the images’content by ensuring that some useful visual information can still be extracted from the output, and 2) providing a way to process the images in real-time in order to cope with the huge amount of images that are being received at a rapid pace. The framework described here is limited to processing those images that have access to their reference version (a.k.a Full-Reference). Secondly, we present a No-Reference Image Quality Assessment Framework in Real-Time. It has the following abilities: a) assessing the distorted image without having its distortion-free image, b) preserving the most useful visual information in the images before publishing, and c) processing the images in real-time, even though the No-Reference image quality assessment models are considered very complex. Our framework offers several advantages over the existing approaches, in particular: i. it locates the distortion in an image in order to directly assess the distorted parts instead of processing the whole image, ii. it has an acceptable trade-off between quality prediction accuracy and execution latency, andiii. it could be used in several applications, especially these that work in real-time. The architecture of each framework is presented in the chapters while detailing the modules and components of the framework. Then, a number of simulations are made to show the effectiveness of our approaches to solve our challenges in relation to the existing approaches

Testo completoEver since the pioneering work of Moreno in 1934, social network analysis has always included drawings depicting relationships between actors. From these days, the graph visualization field has grown within the graph drawing and information visualization communities. Besides the algorithmic and combinatoric questions arising from graph drawings, new challenges now include networks visual data mining. Usually referred to as visual analytics it involves the integration of the user at the heart of the analysis. In this thesis, we focus on interactive and stereoscopic visual restitutions allowing the user to drive the mining process. Using a ad hoc experimental environment, we try to assert their its impact on a popular task of community detection. Through several experiments, we show that for a specific class of graphs, 2D seems more adapted for the easier graphs while stereoscopic 3D is beneficial for the more complex ones. We also identify some differences in the interactions between the stereo and mono conditions, which seems to indicate behavioral differences emerging from differing interaction strategies. We also propose some prospects such as the implementation of a library allowing hands-free interactions adapted to visual mining in front of a large screen
